It’s (Teapot) Tuesday, and there are 8 more days until the spring equinox (your mileage may of course vary, but meteorological winter is already over). Birthdays: Ezra Jack Keats, Douglas Adams, Bobby McFerrin. What fragrance are you wearing?
I’m in Ormonde Jayne Champaca.
Reminder: on 3/14, wear a fragrance with a hyacinth note, if you have one. If you don't, pick another spring flowering bulb?
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the William Morris Hyacinth Teabag Tidy is $4 at Lark London.
Hello.
Sotd is Good Girl Gone Bad Extreme. You know how when you get a compliment on a perfume you’re wearing that day, that certain scent immediately becomes “special”? This is one of those scents. I got I think 3 on different occasions. Not much but most of the time I don’t get any!
I do know what you mean, happy888cat, and I agree-it adds to the enjoyment of the scent forever 🙂
Agree.
Perfume compliments elevate a scent into something even more special.
I’m in SL Dompteuse Encagee, cause I thought it was spring. Walked out the door in a lighter coat and got stopped in my tracks by the clean very cold air – minus 12 lol. It will warm up but that was a jolt to the senses. Works better than coffee to wake you up.
Cold here today too and then tomorrow it’s going to feel like summer.
Teabag tidy…I had to go research that! 🙃
That one is really pretty, don’t you think?
I have a bunch of small dishes I use for tea strainers & tea bags..most of them are Japanese sauce dishes, and they do the trick 🙂
I had to look up what a tea bag tidy was, too.
Hi all. I glanced at the hyacinth list on Fragrantica and found that some of my chypres weren’t listed but when I looked up the actual perfumes, they all have hyacinth. So today it’s the bitter and compelling Paloma Picasso, which I just love. It’s a nice change to have a CP that I don’t need to think too much about (although I try to participate even when my brain doesn’t want to.)
I have my mom every day this week. Today I am baking her some apple crisp and I hope it goes well, I haven’t baked in years, but she’s craving it.
Hope the apple crisp came out perfect! Enjoy your time with your mom.
I bet you baked it well.
I am wearing Sweet William by Carner Barcelona, because that was what I pulled out of my box of minis. Actually I first pulled out Mon Guerlain, but since I remembered that I really dislike it, I pulled another. Sweet William is quite appropriate for spring, which today started in the 40s but is expected to reach the high 70s in my part of Texas.
Our weather here has been just gorgeous lately, hasn’t it? If only it would last! I love the scent of Sweet Williams–and in fact have a nice bouquet of bright red ones on my kitchen table right now. Does that perfume smell like them?
Snowy Day is the most checked out book at NYPL.
Happy Birthday to him.
I am in By Kilians Typical Me- smelling chic
Reading Yokoyama’s The North Light 📖 ✨
Lots of days at NYPL- the New Yorker Exhibition is very popular. Listening to a podcast and happy that our curators are special guests! I am there almost everyday this week. It’s been nonstop these past few weeks
Are you enjoying it or does it feel like too much?
Well, I am ready to take some time off, and as soon as I am away, I will miss the library
😉
You got the book!
Snowy Day was one of my favourites as a kid.
We loved Snowy Day.
And Snow by Uri Shulevitz, who died a week or so ago…I wonder if anyone still checks that out of the library? It was not nearly as well known.
I’m trying a 1925 floral chypre from F. Millot, “Crêpe de Chine.” I’d never heard of it until I read Barbara Herman’s thoughts on it in her book, “Sense & Subversion.” On first sniff, you know you’re smelling something from another era. It’s definitely got that old-school abstract floral vibe, with a mossy, leathery, musky, vetiver base. I’m guessing the name is meant to evoke the exoticism of the Orient. Haunting stuff.
Where or how did you find that?
After reading about it, I searched on eBay and found a small bottle of the Parfum. (The label says it’s 1/5 oz.)
Crepe di Chine was my grandmother’s perfume, I remember playing at her vanity and smelling it. She had made a crepe di chine handkerchief with lace and she scented it for me to keep, I still have it somewhere. She was born in 1900.
what a wonderful memory, ringthing
How lovely!
She had excellent taste.
ah, thx for the memories, Daniel. This was a fave of mine for a very long time. Created by Jean Desprez, supposedly, but then who is F. Millot? I read somewhere that production was d/c a long time ago because the Grasse strain of jasmine used proved too expensive to make it commercially viable. It’s not a jasmine forward fragrance but you can definitely smell it. Jasmine-oakmoss chypre. Calypso, a bottle of this will probably be on my swaplist this weekend, just saying 🙂
Oh my!
My mother, who was born in 1922, loved Crepe de Chene. I can remember her talking about it.
You smell grand, I have it too, a 30ml or 50ml, can’t recall, it lives in the fridge with my other precious💛
Jolie Madame
Love Jolie Madame!!
I have to be careful wearing it b/c my husband haaates it (he likes my girly-girly stuff such as Daisy), but when he’s out of town, I’m loving it.
haha, I’ve got one of those too, mals86 — L’Air du Desert Marocain. Luckily the DH likes most of the others that I do. You smell marvelous and tres jolie. Leather-strapped violets dipped in oakmoss, what’s not to like?
Thanks mals! I love it too! Luckily no complaints from the hubs! But yesterday when I wore AdP Profumo he said “tgat smells like something my mom would have worn”
You smell so good! I wore mine on the weekend, it was nice to experience it again.
I’m still wafting bits of the perfume I put on last night, Guerlain’s Mayotte. I am surprised that the reviewers on Fragrantica complain that it has no lasting power because it certainly does on me. I have a bee bottle with no atomizer (or if I did it’s lost), and so I dabbed it on–a lot, to be honest. I find it an absolutely intoxicating fragrance. It’s got a mad amount of ylang ylang. I swear it has some spicy note in it too but it’s not in any ingredients list. Like cinnamon or something. On some crazy trip to the Galleria back in 2006 I splurged and bought this along with Vega and Sous le Vent in their gorgeous Art Deco bottles and now I keep them safe in the dark reaches at the back of my little perfume cabinet. I have had them out lately and revisiting them is such a pleasure.
I adore sous le vent
Me too. It’s absolutely gorgeous and impossible to find. Le sigh.
Mayotte sounds divine!
Mayotte, formerly Mahora (I believe), is a tuberose bomb on me.
It’s an updated version, and fans of the original complain about it not being as interesting, because Mahora had almond and peach, which Mayotte does not. It is altogether a floral bomb! Ha ha, but to me the standouts are the frangipani and ylang ylang.
Ah, yes, mine is the Mahora, Mayotte sounds like a pretty iteration in any case.
It lasts on me too.
Mahora had a gorgeous bottle. IDK if Guerlain kept it for Mayotte.
I always learn something(s) from these CPs. I did not know that my beloved Tubéreuse Criminelle has a hyacinth note.
TC is all green flowers on me, allo, and the hyacinth note just radiates off my skin. I find it to be a very floral perfume, and the tubereuse is way more subtle than I imagined.
news to me as well, allo.
It’s amazing where hyacinth pops up. I did not know that it is in Guerlain’s Nahema.
Me neither! I spent a few minutes sniffing it last night and I don’t smell hyacinth at all.
Commando for a hair appointment this morning, but will be in Chanel 19 EDT later on.
You smell wonderful!
The edt version is my favorite. You do smell great!
Scent siblings today with you!
Testing out Cheirosa 62 body spray since I love the bum bum cream smell. So far, so good for a cheapie.
Good then!
slept and slept.
Vintage 24 Faubourg today. It has gone from a love to a like over the years.
We were sleeping twins!
I dream so much though that sometimes it’s not restful.
I don’t remember any dreams from last night. It was blank-o.
My sister has been dreaming for both of us.
That’s a lovely teabag tidy (I had no idea that’s what they are called).
Wearing Hermes Un Jardin sur le Nil for some points, since it might have hyacinth (sources differ). It has a slightly powdery green floral accord, so it may be true.
Whether it has hyacinth or not, it smells fantastic.
Yes!
I want to say maybe water hyacinth, but it really is just a guess, and not that I know what one of those smells like.
Who knows? I was sure Victoria from Bois de Jasmin mentioned hyacinth in her review of Un Jardin sur le Nil but then could not find it there. 🤔
Still one of my favorite fragrances.
I have never heard them called that outside of UK retailers.
Inspired by the CP, I indulged in a perfume I am just eking out–Escada’s Margaretha Ley, EDP. I wore it the years I lived and worked in Manhattan in the 90s. My bottle, which I found on eBay about five years ago, now only has about 15-20s mls left. This beauty radiates long blazers and mauve pencil skirts!
Hello stranger!
Howdy pard’ner! 🧡
That’s perfect, Oakland Fresca. Makes me think of Melanie Griffith in Working Girl.
That’s the time! I was no Melanie Griffith, but I aspired!
You smell divine!
Nice to see you!
Why thank you my dear. Sending hugs!
I lived and worked in Manhattan too and also wore that Escada
Martine’s chocolates at Bloomingdales and the Angel’s Share . . . both gone now. Those were the days!
Hiya Oakland Fresca! How are things?
It’s been weird but moving forward!
Nice to see you!😊
Back atcha!
My parents always used to say it was “ degging down” whenever it was raining very heavily and that’s what it’s doing this morning : raining so hard the drops bounce. The word is from the Lancashire dialect , basically almost extinct but the writer Alan Garner ( The Treacle Walker) uses it. So, not a bright start to the day . But a good reading day. Wearing Penhaligon Night Scented Stock .
Hope you had a cozy reading day Kanuka!
In long-discontinued Crown Perfumery Crown Bouquet today: big loud smack of sweet/bitter greens (galbanum and marigold) up top, then hyacinth and some very quiet jasmine and muguet. I love this thing for spring.
I have that one too!!! You smell great Mals!!! I need to dig mine out for Spring!!!!
I am wearing a dab from my precious Parure EdT mini and hyacinth is not a listed note but it could be IMHO. I’m finishing the book Anima by Kapka Kassabova, a Scottish-Bulgarian writer, about the disappearing transhumance (the seasonal movement of livestock, their guardian dogs and semi-nomadic people) in remote Bulgarian mountains, and her writing is so mesmerizing that I must now track down everything she’s written. Did someone here recommend her? I can’t remember. And if you like this stuff, the 1925 silent documentary Grass chronicles a season in the life of tribal herders as they migrate to summer pastures in remote Iranian mountains.
Check out her poetry, too. It’s worth searching out ( her very early novels not so much). Some of these early works date from when she lived in New Zealand ( went to university here, we were in the same writing class). The book on Borders is also good.
oh that’s right, she lived in NZ. Thx so much Kanuka. Yeah, I definitely want to read that Borders book with an eye to our own border issues in the U.S.
No hyacinth for me so will just go with whatever this week. Very cold today so will go with Encense Mythique.
Our weather is going to be up and down all week. Cold today, warm tomorrow, rain on Friday and snow on Saturday. Crazy, but typical for March in the Midwest.
Encense Mythique is so warming? Do I mention this every time EM is mentioned? Maybe
Not that I ever noticed. I keep thinking about getting a BUB since they are pretty cheap online.
I have seen some reviews how one spray lasts all day. I can’t say I would agree with that. What about you?
It takes more than one spray, but after that it does last a good while.
I think I might get snow next week. I saw that Friday/ Saturday might be severe storms for the Midwest.
Yes. Friday it is going to be in the 70’s with rain and then on Saturday it is going to be in the 30’s with snow. Crazy.
Looks like I might be getting some rain on Friday too. It’s been 15 – 20 degrees above “normal” here.
Good morning! I’ve been neglecting NST over the last few days, life has been a bit busy. I’m catching up with myself now and will catch up with NST soon.
Meanwhile, I’m wearing the always lovely Tea for Two.
Hope it is good busy Gaynor!
Not CP-compliant now, but hoping maybe I can get there later. I tried Mancera Instant Crush from my Scentrique samples. Alas, not an instant crush, nor a true scrubber. All the top notes sound lovely (citrus, saffron, ginger, rose supposedly in the drydown), but I smell nothing but an amber bomb with some vanilla. Not my thing.
I have lots of hyacinth, though, so I want to get back to that. 🙂
I now have the Daft Punk song running through my head, and no idea whether Mancera uses song names for its perfumes.
I’m officially an Old Person, I guess. Yes, I do know some Daft Punk but didn’t realize this was one of their songs!
Do they also have a song for “I wish I’d scrubbed this off this morning because it lasted all day?” 🙂
Looking at Mancera’s site, I don’t think they have a song name quirk (“Black Noir” and “Intense Red Tobacco” and “Hindu Kush” not being song names I know).
It’s a cool and rainy day, so I am wearing TF Lost Cherry, reminiscent of pipe tobacco.
I have not tried this. Do you like it?
It’s a like but not a love. Will use up the travel spray, but couldn’t see myself buying a bigger bottle.
I am not a big cherry fan so guessing it would be a pass for me.
SOTD = Guerlain Royal Extract II
I have a decant from pixel (where is she?) from way back in 2020! That was … almost 5 years ago and it’s still going strong. I really should finish it this year. It is a woody green scent with galbanum, moss, and vetiver. Sillage is lower than average although it is nonetheless lovely.

I have a surplus of NYTimes gift articles. So here’s one for cats 🐈 🐈⬛ 🐱 because it seems we have more cat lovers here than usual. For what it’s worth, it is NOT a happy article although there is hope yet!
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/11/science/cats-veterinarians-health.html?unlocked_article_code=1.3E4.SvR4.Ii2kpd182-3q&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
Since it’s not happy I won’t read it
Good for you because it is kinda sad!
Not going to read the sad kitty story either. Wouldn’t want to upset Teflon who is currently sitting on my lap.
It does have good info!
Pretty sure I know what this article is because I read it this morning (didn’t click through on your link). It was eye-opening — I had no idea that vets do almost no research on cats and try to manage them using dog knowledge.
Seriously…so many remedies rely on research done on “equivalent” organisms.
Funny you mention dog medicines being used for cats. I’ve experienced that with Teflon kitty.
Smoothie is a pear, they took a while to ripen but really delicious.
I applied Angel Innocent this morning and thought this is probably my favorite flanker of Angel. It lasted well too and it has wonderful citrus notes. Tonight it’s Fragonard Grain de Soleil which sounds summery but is meant for coldish weather with all its resins.
Angel Innocent was the Angel that helped me enjoy the original.
It’s friendlier isn’t it.
Oh, that was a good one. I am not sure why I never bought it, but I found it to be lovely.
It’s never too late, discontinued I think since L’Oréal took over but you could save a search on Mercari and eBay and wait for a good price.
I don’t think I ever saw Angel Innocent in the department stores.
I saw it in Macy’s.
I used to avoid the perfume section at Macy’s like the proverbial plague. Did not want to get ambushed.
Ha!
I’m enjoying good weather on my day off today.
My official sotd is Gucci by Gucci (brown square bottle) I stopped at the mall and did some sniffing so I have another 5 scents wafting. I ended up getting a perfume compliment at the gas station. I have no idea for which perfume. Lol.
One that I tried is the new JhaG Miami Milkshake. I could smell milky strawberry for a few minutes and then I could only smell ambroxan. I really wish I could smell past it like some people can.
Yay for good weather in your neck of the woods, here it is colder (8C) after a mild and sunny pretty much all last week.
Oh, Gucci brown bottle is quite rare.
I just posted to Kris about the original Gucci by Gucci in the round style bottle. That one is very rare. The square one that I have is discontinued but can still be found here and there.
I have Omnia by Gucci, still in its shrink wrap. Is that a good one?
Is it Gucci Omnia or Bvlgari? I know the Bvlgari is great. Either way open it!
I have only heard of Omnia by Bvlgari.
Eagle eyes! Indeed it is Bvlgari!
Gucci is great! I had that brown bottle too, but it seems like it was a long time ago. I guess it came out 18 years ago, so I probably had it when it first came out.
I think yours is the round bottle, brown juice which was amazing! The one I have is 2007 opaque square brown bottle which I believe is a fruity chypre (pear) I like it but not as much as the 2002.
I don’t have it anymore, so not sure which one it was. I was just looking at Fragrantica and when I pulled it up it said 2007.
Omg I just realized that 2007 was 18 years ago! I figured we were talking about different one’s.
Where does the time go ?! Lol.
I wanted to like the brown square bottle Gucci by Gucci, but it was too sweet on me.
It is pretty syrupy.
Wearing Heure Exquise. I don’t detect any hyacinth but it smells pretty good today. Maybe it’s the cool weather.
You smell wonderful. For whatever reason, I don’t think I know what hyacinths smell like. I could almost swear that the list of perfumes with a given a note has doubled in size at least in the past few months.
I don’t recall smelling hyacinth in Heure Exquise when I had some either.
Chanel No 18 EDP
Barqs you smell amazing! No.18 doesn’t get as much love as it deserves.
House twins today!
More warm weather here, but today is cloudy instead of the typical Colorado blue skies.
Teflon kitty’s appetite seems to have picked up a bit, which is A Good Thing. Yesterday’s vet visit showed that she had lost some weight since October. She is looking rather bedraggled from the ear drops since those don’t stay inside her ears.
SOTD = Chanel No. 19 Poudre. Sticking with Chanel for the time being. I like this one, but it doesn’t project much at all from my scent glue skin.
You smell great. I’m glad Teflon kitty seems to be getting better!
Thanks! Fingers crossed I can give her all the doses of the ear drops that she needs.
Maybe TK will gain a little weight now if she is feeling better.
I hope so. She’s a little 7-pound cat, give or take, so it’s not like she has a bunch of weight to lose.
I had trouble getting Poudre to stick around when I had it. I love the scent though.
I’m glad TK is eating a little more.
Maybe the trick is to go Full Hajusuuri with Poudre?
I was happy to see Tef snacking on some of her kibble earlier this afternoon.
Aww…kitties and ears. I do hope she feels better soon. I spent way too much of my time with Katrei, my bestest cat ever, cleaning black gunk out of her ears. Not the case now with my ueber-healthy cat; she gets offended if I even try to look in her ears, which are pristine (bless her, and bless not having feline leukemia).
Thanks ockeghem. The ear drops are effective but take several days to work. Hopefully a second round of them won’t be necessary.
Oh poor skinny Teflon. Does she like yogurt? My Schnooky adored it.
Teflon LOVES almost anything dairy. She’s been getting a little dollop of sour cream as a snack. The vet did say to take easy with it to prevent the potential for pancreatitis.
I survived Day 2 of Many-People-on-Vacation week. I wore Goldfield and Banks Silky Woods. All of us, vacationing and not, were chagrined to get a memo regarding our supposed declining productivity and how we all need to pick up more work. I was NOT thrilled to be reading this on a 14-hr workday.
Whatever perfume I sampled last week dried down beautifully on the shirt I put on at home after I take off my scrubs. It reminds me of a leather bag that had pipe tobacco in it. Trouble is, I can’t figure out which sample it was. Or maybe two mixed together . .
14 hours! Yeah, not a welcome memo.
Ugh, sorry about that memo. That’s just stupid.
Sampled Intra Venus by Chronotope which has a hyacinth note but I’m not impressed. It’s not even close in beauty to Moon Moss
As is often the case I don’t know the scent’s you’re trying, but those are fun names!
All I can say is “Intravenus de Milo”. (IYKYK.) I don’t see that having a hyacinth note, though. 🙂
