It's Tuesday. Happy New Year’s Eve, and stay safe out there! It's also the seventh day of Christmas, the seventh night of Hanukkah and the sixth day of Kwanzaa. RIP Jimmy Carter. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm commando at the moment in the hopes I might make it to the gym, but my plan for later is Theorema. Tea at the moment is Chai Imperial from Palais des Thés.
Reminder: on 1/3, wear a fragrance to match Mocha Mousse, Pantone's color of the year for 2025: "For 2025, the Pantone Color Institute selects PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse, a warming, brown hue imbued with richness. It nurtures us with its suggestion of the delectable qualities of chocolate and coffee, answering our desire for comfort. // Underpinned by our desire for every day pleasures, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse expresses a level of thoughtful indulgence. Sophisticated and lush, yet at the same time an unpretentious classic, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse extends our perceptions of the browns from being humble and grounded to embrace aspirational and luxe."
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the Teapot ARECORE Large Brown – Jinsui Tokoname ("This traditional teapot is hand crafted by Jinsui, a historic pottery maker based in Tokoname, one of 6 ancient and famous kilns in Japan. It features a stainless steel mesh filter which is removable. It is available in large and small size, and 3 colours") is €55 at Koto Tea in Kyoto.
Oud Nude from a sample
Cher’s memoir is fab so far
I am reading a historical fiction book at the moment that I think you might really enjoy. It is The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon. I am only about 1/4 of the way through it, but so far so good.
My cousin read that she must of told me a zillion times I would love it
Oh, that’s funny. Well, then you are very much aware of the book.
Also, I had a question for you. I know you purchased Encens Mythique. Just curious if this smells at all like POAL. You may have already said in an earlier post. It sounds good to me, but I hesitate to try it as I saw one person said it smelled like a barbershop. If it is masculine then I may not be interested. TIA

Here is a review at about 8 min he talks about the perfume
Thank you. I have watched a few videos and am still wondering if I want to pull the plug and just get it. Jomashop still has it on sale.
ambergris in here is dominant
Butting in to say, EM does not smell much like POAL to me. The huge difference is that EM is aldehydic and also has a ambergris/salty note. I would be happy to send you a sample, if you’d like!
I was going to say the same thing, do you want a sample.?
It’s not sweet, it’s a deep dark rose with incense and then Guerlainade at the end.
I would love a sample if you would be so kind. Can you send me an email at k r i s p o n t o (all together) at sio dawt midco dawt net. Thanks so much.
I love that teapot…and it’s affordable! Hmm…was thinking about spending a bit of my Christmas money on me, though there’s still a whole heap of travel expenses that it needs to go to, as well.
I haven’t been able to post / read much lately as we spent a week getting home and I’ve been jetlagged. Today is really the first day I’ve been able to sleep until a normal hour. We saw my 94-year-old grandmother in the Midwest, and then picked up my cat and car from my father in eastern Washington, so it’s been a lot of flying and driving with eight bags and then a cat and her stuff. And then right back in to work when I got home, though fortunately it’s pretty quiet.
No SOTD yet. Maybe Ummagumma, though that’s probably a darker brown than the CP. Or maybe St. Honoré. Fortunately my new purchases made it home just fine, along with everything else (so far…not totally unpacked yet).
Whew! I know you will be glad to be back home with the kitty, and 🙏 for continued quiet, work-wise!
Glad you are home safe and on the way to settling in 🙂
Good to hear that you are safely home and settled in with your kitteh!
Like ockeghem, am still jet lagged — we arrived home around 1 am Saturday after a five-hour delay at Dulles (connection to home airport). Also like ockeghem, and still commando. But the sun is shining!!!! Yay!
I like the teapot, but although I love many browns, the mocha mousse does nothing for me.
Our cat is very glad that we are home, and we had dinner last night at the home of some of our very dearest friends, so all of that is helping with being back in the U.S. and with missing Ireland. Once again, returning from four months abroad has inspired both of us to purge our belongings. My perfumes are safe, but clothes, books, old sheets and towels, random things foisted on me by relatives but to which I have no attachment…all fair game.
Best wishes to all NSTers for a safe New Year’s Eve, and for a very peaceful and happy 2025!
So glad I am to hear of another safe return, especially one that involves a dear pet and good friends’ attention!
Thank you! The cat is milking our guilt for extra treats.
Welcome home skalolazka!
Thanks, Robin (and sorry about the duplicate comment above). I ended up in Shalimar (for now), which O regretted for about four hours — it just wasn’t sitting right — and now am inhaling happily. Weird.
4 hours is a lot of regret but glad it’s lovely now 🙂
Well, not “now” since I am as usual over 24 hours late!!!
Ew, that’s a red-eye homecoming for sure. Welcome back!
Rabbit rabbit rabbit and Happy New Year to everyone! New Year’s Day here and I’m listening to the dawn chorus, the most peaceful way to welcome a potentially busy day ( it’s my son’s birthday ). It’s still dark but I have been outside and it’s misty and drizzly, and very calm. The year I turned 60 I decided to start a daily diary. It was a whim, and I didn’t expect to keep at it, but somehow I have and so today I can start a new one…kind of like the first day of school all over again when you had all those untouched exercise books, and how exciting it was to enter the first words on the page. I suspect, that for many of us at NST, these daily perfume “ comments” are our true diary entries. Wearing Devotion, which seems nice for this family day.
Happy New Year Kanuka!
My best wishes for 2025!
Happy New Year and happy birthday to your son!
Happy New Year Kanuka, thank you for your observations of nature and the many links you post.
Happy New Year! Wishing you joy and peace
happy new year!
Happy birthday to Mr Kanuka Jr (probably not what he prefers to go by) and hope you both have a lovely day!
Happy New Year Kanuka!
Happy New Year!
Just skimmed over Dacob’s youtube presentation announcing that a set of Les Exclusifs in 35 ml sizes (sprays) will be available from the boutiques only beginning next month. You have to buy a set of 5.
Not sure if limited edition or not. He’s pretty stoked, lol.
We had sun yesterday for the 1st time in seemingly weeks, but now we’re back to a wintry mix. Wearing Alahine, which I’d forgotten about for awhile.
Love Alahiiine
Guessing they will not be at a price I would go for and no way do I need 5 but still glad they are doing it.
Hi everyone! Hope everyone is having a relaxing day. I’m watching the Thin Man movie marathon on TCM and waiting for my husband to cook a seafood gumbo. We haven’t made it still midnight in years and this one will be the same, I’m sure.
Sotd is Imaginary Authors Dipped in Chocolate from the swapmeet, thanks hajusuuri!) This is the first time I’ve tried it and omgoodness it’s gorgeous, dark cocoa and floral incense. Yes incense, even though it’s not in the notes. Anyone else? Really enjoying this!
The Thin Man movies! So good! “You were shot twice in the tabloids…” We are doing the finale of Lord of the Rings and Mexican treats. Making it to midnight is optional.
Sounds like a fun plan and more companionable than mine; while I watch The Thin Man, my husband will be watching football in the other room lol.
You husband can come to mine to cook sea food gumbo
I’ll trade gumbo for chai!
I am asking my FIL for some to pack up for me 🩷
Yay Thin Man!
I’m glad you’re enjoying Dipped in Chocolate!
LOVE gumbo! Sadly, I haven’t had it in years.
We watched the Sister Boniface Christmas special, which was charming. And the night before, we watched the Gavin & Stacey finale, which we missed on Christmas night (when it aired on BBC Northern Ireland, which is available in the Republic) because we were shifting stuff around to hit the checked bag weight limit. It was perfect.
Today (Jan. 1), we will probably watch the Kneecap movie together (on Netflix). We each watched it, slightly out of sync, on the Dublin- Dulles flight — it’s a surprising choice for an in-flight movie because it is very much a R-rated film and this was NOT an in-flight edit, at least not until we crossed into U.S. airspace. I made sure there were no children in eyeshot (?) of my screen, but later noticed that about 2/3 of the other screens around me were playing the same movie — including the screens of the children’s parents. ANYWAY — take that as gentle caveat about content (drugs, sex, language, violence); it is a FANTASTIC film and we were excited to finally see it, having been hearing so much about both the band (Kneecap) and the film over the past year.
Wearing Clinique Happy for the last day of 2024. It’s pouring rain outside and we will be under a snow storm warning through Sunday in Northern Ohio.
Stay safe with that weather coming your way.
Hope you don’t have to go anywhere in that weather.
Sunshine has been cranked up to 10 again today for which I’m heartily thankful because the breeze is chilly!
Saw a little blurb about some ancient remains found hereabouts that dated back 10,000! Human remains..! When I get a real signal I’m going to have research that. My camp spot has a big boulder at the entrance with a placard that says it’s from a nearby lava field and dates back 47-53 million years ago. My brain doesn’t compute..!
Wearing SL Cuir Mauresque today from the gangly, tippy black bottle.
Happy New Year to all! If you’re out on the road, stay vigilant and be careful. There’s only one couple anywhere near me and we all plan on a nice peaceful night! I hope 2025 sees peace rolling across the world with all the power of a vast tidal wave. 🕊️
Happy New Year Deva, echoing your wishes for peace.
Peace, and a very Happy New Year to you, Deva. You smell wonderful. I finally got a “tippy black bottle” (Fumerie Turque) and I was a little surprised that it was not as towering as I had pictured. So far my 100ml Kenzo Flower wins that prize.
have a peaceful new year, Deva, and T rex too!
I will vote for a tidal wave of peace!
Happy New Year Deva! 🐍
Happy New Year’s Eve to you and T-Rex!
SOTD is Leather Jardin.
Another cloudy day today. It seems like there are more clouds than sun this month. Next comes January with the freezing temperatures. All part of living in the Midwest!
I associate Leather Jardin with you, I too struggle with thelink ok sun in winter in the UK, temperatures are not usually very cold.
That’s funny. Most people have associated Shalimar MI with me. I like Leather Jardin, but it packs a punch. I have to be careful when I spray. I am afraid I could clear a store out if I overspray.
Love Shalimar
Oh dear, it’s *lack of sun
Ooooooooooh, today would have been perfect weather for Leather Jardin! It was chilly here.
I was doing themes all month and I’m ending the year in chypres, my favourite category, so on this last day of the year — honestly, how is that even possible? — I’m wearing THE chypre, Guerlain Mitsouko. Seems like a good way to tie a ribbon around a year. Still haven’t decided what I should see the new year in with. It’ll come to me.
Today it is 8°C out, and again, how is that even possible in eastern Canada at the end of December? So we went out for a walk, ran a few last-minute errands (we now have Shingrix and Prevnar vaccines scheduled for Friday, might as well get them both over with at the same time), got some New Year’s Day groceries (ribs!), and now I am not doing another blessed thing until it’s 2025.
Mitsouko is a great choice.
You sound like me. I went out and did a bunch of errands this morning so I could stay in until 2025. Well, I may go get another coffee this afternoon, but other than that I am done.
You smell wonderful in Mitsouko!
Your winter and our summer seem to be converging – it’s currently only 11°C here!
House twins 👯
… until next year 🤣
Up until today, it’s been unusually warm for December where I am at, too. Been kind of unsettling, TBH.
I’ve been wearing patchouli heavy fragrances for two days now, Aromatics Elixir yesterday and Mon parfum chéri par Camille today.
I hope everyone has a good New Year!
You smell wonderful! And thank you for mentioning patchouli, which I associate with the color brown (Mocha Mousse!).
i love AE, you smell so classic
Another AE fan here. You smell fabulous!
Yet another fan of AE!
Happy New Year! We had a very nice quiet evening with a few friends, ate too much and we’re in bed by 11pm. We’re not the party animals we once we’re. I wore Amouage Beloved, which always feels fabulously dressed up.
The weather last night was not great and is worse today, wet and cold. I would prefer to just stay home, but I left my phone at our friends’ place.
For .the CP, that shade of brown makes me think of soft spices, so I’ll wear Omnia today.
Omnia is a great choice for the CP.
Summer seems to be missing from your part of the world this year, Happy New Year.
Happy New Year Gaynor!
I started the day in Coromandel EdP even before austenfan inspired me to wear patchouli fragrances this week. It was meant to be!
Possible line-up:
Reminiscense Patchouli
Diptyque Tempo
Le Labo Patchouli 24
SL Borneo 1834
L’Artisan Voleur de Roses
Byredo M/Mink
I didn’t even think of patchouli heavy fragrances for the CP. I was thinking coffee, cocoa and chocolate. Maybe I can figure something out for a day or two this week.
It’s probably more green than brown but I think of the color of Reminiscence Patchouli and am also guessing that many patchouli fragrances are paired with coffee, cocoa and chocolate*. I’ll so some research🤔
*Chocolate is not my favorite perfume note and I may end up swapping my bottle of Ummagumma for that reason.
I’ve sampled a few chocolate forward perfumes. Always in the drydown something starts to bother me. The exception being Prada Candy Night.
Chocolate in perfume isn’t my thing either.
That’s my experience too.
I love Tempo!
Me too! So does Mr. allo💕
Nice list! And of course you smell wonderful.
Thank you!😊
Rem Patchouli is an excellent pick for Friday’s CP! And going along those lines, maybe the OG Angel would be, too. Patch + chocolate + caramel.
RIP Jimmy Carter. I have a photo of my Father shaking hands with him when he was Governor, at a local business luncheon of some kind, and of course it was a receiving line, but it still looks cool. SotD for New Year’s Eve: SJP Stash. The waft is mostly from the body oil, which I topped it off with a few sprays of the edp. It is one of two or three perfumes that Mr. Mossy really likes. I think he likes me in vetiver (!) which I would never pick as a favorite note. But we do agree on wood notes, and patchouli and/or musk if well-tempered with something resinous. He frowns at my indolic favorites and most amber-florals; however, he knows what goes on down in the rabbit hole and understands a good fixation. 🙂 Happy New Year to all my NST buddies and a special fragrant waive to PL67 for health in 2025!
How wonderful to have that photo.
To go on, today’s teapot is beautiful, and I had red oolong to start my day today. Brown is probably my favorite color and it works really well with my coloring, though for clothes I look best in a shade or two darker than Mocha Mousse. In the 1980’s I splurged on a brown suit with a peplum waist. It made me feel confident and was just classic enough that I got years of wear out of it. I think a scarf was involved.
I love brown, too, especially darker shades. It’s nice to see it getting popular again.
How cool to have a keepsake like that!
The state of Colorado will be keeping flags at half staff for Jimmy Carter for 30 days. I expect other states will be doing the same.
Happy New Year’s Eve NST friends. Just started in the kitchen, hors d’œuvre will be avocados and olives, both from the Turkish deli. Today I wore Chloe Rose Naturelle Intense recently acquired and tonight it’s Miss Dior Chérie 1st 2005 version from a brand new bottle, the end of my partial bottle has turned I discovered, so after some hesitation as my favorite MDC is the second version which is a chypre, I located a well priced bottle of the first version and I must say it smells great tonight, fruity and fun, a real little party number.
Yay for your win on an “aftermarket” bottle. Happy New Year and I am making guacamole so joining you with healthy and delicious avacodos. I will be heading to the kitchen in a little while…
avocados…I eat them most every week; you’d think I’d know how to spell the name…
avacodos sound like something one would eat too😃
hors-d’oeuvre twins!
Oh, that’s a shame your partial bottle of Miss Dior Cherie 1.0 turned! Glad you found a reasonably priced replacement.
I should get back into having guacamole toast every so often.
No party here tonight, I have a flight tomorrow morning. Today I’m wearing SL Fils de Joie, a blind buy that was a resounding success.
Where are you off to? someplace warm and sunny?
Yes, indeed!
Safe travels, foxbins!
On this last day of the year, I’m wearing the first fragrance I ever wore: Devin Country Cologne by Aramis. (10th grade dance, first time wearing cologne, feeling like a grown-up.)
Before spraying the cologne, I began with the aftershave. I never use aftershave – why would I put alcohol on my face after razor blades have roughed it up? Today, however, I braved the sting. Full throttle Devin to end the year.
It’s a beautiful chypre – woods, leather, citrus, lavender, oak moss, pine, carnation. I know it’s still available; the latest reformulation hasn’t totally ruined it, but it’s lacking in oomph and depth. Thank goodness for my enormous supply of the vintage stuff.
I suppose Devin is now an “old-school masculine,” in keeping with my theme this week. (Which would mean that I, too, am old-school. Yikes.) But it doesn’t feel old to me – just full of warm nostalgia. In all these decades, I never once smelled it on anyone else, so I have an (unearned) pride of ownership when I wear it. For just a moment, tenth grade Daniel, slow dancing with his date, lives on.😊
Happy New Year, everyone!
HA, I am sure I smelled that at a middle school dance myself….MANY moons ago. Such great stuff.
Happy New Year Daniel!
Aww… yay for 10th grade Daniel!
Happy New Year!
A great classic.
Smelling good! Hope you get some dancin’ in tonight!
Happy New Year Daniel!
To you, too!😊
I’m wearing ELDO Story of Your Life again. Mmm. Since it has benzoin, bread, rum, and cocoa, one might suppose it goes with that color. I guess I resist the association because in my eyes that color should be not Mocha but Babypoop Mousse. Sorry if I’m raining on anyone’s parade! Oops!
This evening I’ll be joining a group of a dozen or so oddly-assorted friends going out for a big Vietnamese dinner and then back to the hosts’ house for drinks and desserts, which were quite lavish last year when I did the same. Plus, they have three nice cats, and I will get to pet at least two of them (the third one does a disappearing act).
It’s not as warm as the high of 81 yesterday but it’s still 68 and sunny, and the cats are out on the porch snoozing in the sunshine. We have predictions of a big Arctic front coming through next week. I wouldn’t mind a chance to wear some of my nice sweaters for a bit, just as long as we don’t lose power so that we have no heat or hot water at all, as happened in Feb. 2021. That was horrendous.
I’m reading the new biography of George Eliot by philosopher Clare Carlisle, and it’s so good. It’s well written and does a beautiful job of blending together treatment of her personal life, social opinion writing, and love life/partnership with George Lewes, which was scandalous at the time. If you like her novels I strongly recommend this. The title is The Marriage Question: George Eliot’s Double Life.
That sounds like a lovely evening, enjoy!
Had been meaning to read that book and then forgot all about it, thanks for the reminder.
I forgot to say, among the many things the author covers, there are of course also details about her writing and its evolution over time!
Lol – the color is a cooler brown, so I see where you are coming from there. 😀
Sounds like you’re having a great time tonight! Enjoy!
And I LOL’ed at “Babypoop Mousse”. Originally read it as “Babypoop Mouse”, and realized almost immediately that that wasn’t right. 🤔
SOTD = Annick Goutal Nuit Etoilee EDT
Happy New Year’s Eve!
One of my favorites in the really cute blue ribbed bottle!

In other news, for those traveling (not me, not yet), here’s an article from The New York Times on how to score upgraded seats – do your research before plunging in!

I have the 4160 Tuesdays January Joy Box which technically starts tomorrow and goes on every other day. I have to adjust my wearing schedule due to events happening over the next few days. I am looking forward to it because it keeps me grounded in scent!
Happy NY Eve hajusuuri!
Happy New Year’s Eve to you as well!
Happy New Year’s Eve!🥂🎉
Happy New Year’s Eve! Enjoy your January Joy box, it sounds like fun!
Happy New Year’s Eve, hajusuuri! That AG bottle is the prettiest one they ever did.
AG’s NE is one of the few bottles kept after being emptied.
I am into the 2025 Pantone color. I love a chocolate everything. And mousse sounds so good right now.
Wearing a lot of the same 3 frangrances throughout the colder days of the year right now. It’s Lolita Lempicka, Trish McEvoy n9 Blackberry & Vanilla Musk, or Akro Bake all day every day. Today is LL. Yesterday was Bake. I spend the whole day with the bottle nearby and refresh every couple hours. Wfh smells so good.
When I am in the office there’s a no fragrance policy, which was implemented years ago after a temp went out for smoke breaks and then doused herself in something potent on her return (I am pretty sure something from the drugstore, maybe a dupe of Flowerbomb) – and the combo of cheap perfume and cigarettes was rough.
So now when i am in the office i do one spray of either Narcisco Rodriquez Pure Musc or SJP Lovely. Both nice. But not spray-all-day nice.
There’s are few things as nice as spray-all-day nice🥰
Started the day in Cuir d’Iris, and now after a Pilates session and a shower I’m in one of the most festive and elegant scents I own — Tom Ford Violet Blonde. Mr. G and I will be hunkered down here, drinking Prosecco and enjoying our Christmas lights, and probably falling asleep by 9. Yes, we ARE party animals. 🤣
Smelling great SheriG!
Enjoy your evening!
Happy New Year’s Eve, SheriG!
I’m working tonight and tomorrow. Every store in town is already closed except mine and we are busy.
I’m wearing Coco Parfum tonight to keep my spirits up. I find the Parfum much more animalic than the edp or edt.
I hope everyone has a great New Year’s Eve!
I hope you have a good evening despite being at work!
You smell fabulous! Coco Parfum is the ultimate spirit lifter!
Happy New Year’s Eve, NST! 🎉✨ Teflon kitty and I are planning on a quiet night. I made carnitas earlier today, and have plenty of leftovers for at least a couple of meals. Looking forward to pulled pork sandwiches! Maybe I will have a gin and tonic later on, since I don’t have any bubbly. Tomorrow I go over to my brother’s house for New Year’s Day.
Not a fan of Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2025. I have nothing against brown; in fact, one of my favorite sweater is brown chenille. But it’s much darker and richer in color.
SOTD = Prada Candy, again. I decided that for the last day of 2024, I would wear a perfume that I purchased a full bottle of this year. Had plenty of choices! 🤣
Your meal sounds delicious! We are having a chicken/rice/broccoli casserole with fresh bread. We are staying home as well!
Happy New Year and have fun at your brothers.
Sorry, brother’s home.
Thanks Kris! It’s going to be (gigantic) steaks and veggies tomorrow. We may or may not have crab legs…
Lunch sure hit the spot! I haven’t really had the urge for a full meal since.
Happy New Year jalapeno!
Happy New Year, lillyjo!
Happy New Year Jalapeno. Gin and tonic is a great idea.
Happy New Year Aurora! Glad I had just the one gin & tonic… staying up until midnight last night was harder than I expected. Tried out a new gin just for the occasion!
SOTD is Interlude Woman.
My sister and parents have been staying with me, and keeping me busy. I just realized I completely forgot to use my Diptyque sapin room spray this year! We’ve mostly just been hanging out, eating too much, and enjoying one another’s company. It’s been really nice, but I already feel the sort of Sunday night blues and dread of going back to work on the 6th.
Hope that 2025 is a good year for you, tulipani!
Happy New Year Tulipani.
I finished off my decant of Vero Profumo Rozy Voile d’Extrait to end the year. This is definitely high on my list of bottle purchases for 2025. It really grew on me to be a real love.
Having a quiet night in after getting back from a walk in the park a little bit ago. We’ll watch some movies, eat chili and then brownies for dessert, and I’ll probably be asleep before midnight. Today was a work day for me though I took off early at 2.
Sounds like a nice meal and evening.
Happy New Year’s Eve, therabbitsflower!🥂🎉 Hope you enjoy a restful evening and day tomorrow.
Happy New Year, allo! I hope the same for you.
