It's Friday, plus National Bundt Cake Day, Steve Irwin Day and Georgia O’Keeffe’s birthday. Watch for the Beaver Supermoon tonight...it's the last supermoon until October 2025. Our community project this week: wear a fragrance with tonka bean, if you have one.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm in Hermès Vetiver Tonka.
Reminder: on 11/22, we're off to Nepal! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in Nepal, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to Nepal, or that features a local ingredient, or ?
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Hello and tgif!
Sotd is my best tonka – Tonka Sarrapia 75.
I finally tested out Patchouli Paris! It’s a nice one, not great enough to tempt my wallet but smells good. Creamy and strong patchouli smoothed out by powdery iris and a healthy dose of delicious Guerlain vanilla. Nothing complex but it does have character.
I agree with you on Patchouli Paris. I thought it was nice too, but not enough for the price.
I finally splashed out on Le Flacon Sac, and one of the items popped in as an extra was Patchouli Paris. Agreed, it’s nice and I’ll probably finish it, but will stick to ELO’s big bellybutton as my one and only patchouli perfume.
Perfect choice, Robin. Extra points for “tonka” in the name of your scent.
I picked Creed Sublime Vanille for the CP. It is a citrus floral vanilla fragrance, but there is also something spicy in it, which is probably tonka.
Thank you for the extra points 🙂
I never tried the Creed but it sounds nice, I like a citrusy vanilla.
I wanted something with “tonka” in the title, so I thought about Hermessence Vetiver Tonka, but I wasn’t in the mood for it — you know how that goes some days — or 4711 Acqua Colonia Hazel & Tonka, but I don’t like it very much. I liked it in the store! But it’s too monochromatically sweet and warm. I think it would make a better wintertime room spray. I must give that a try.
So I’m in vintage Givenchy Pi, which is also sweet and warm, but at least it’s complicated and interesting, shaking it up a little with bright citrus and herbs at the top before becoming a comforting blanket of vanilla and tonka and cedar. I loved it (and bought it) at first sniff but I never did understand that astronaut advertising campaign: don’t you think of cold when you think of outer space? They should have had, I dunno, a physicist on vacation in the woods or something.
“A physicist on vacation in the woods or something” cracked me up…
I started the day in Anatole Lebreton Racine Carrée, which does not fit the CP at all. However, I’ll change to Dzing! soon. Happy weekend, everyone!
Happy weekend ockeghem!
Happy Friday, all! Starting to pack for our road trip to Florida- we got the trailer tuned up and are now making lists. I am a chronic over packer, so this time I am making an honest effort to only put into the trailer things we will actually use! Still a little worried about driving through Georgia, but we will just be passing through on the interstate, so how bad could it be? High of 52 here in MI today, high of 80 in Placida. We are headed it the right direction, it seems. All my summer clothes are way to big for me now, so now I have to buy a swimming suit and a couple pair of summer pants/capris/ shorts…cant decide if I should get dependables from Land’s End or try to shop once I get down there..
SOTD is Anatole Lebreton’s Grimoire, a fatastic wintery incense/fir/pine with something sweet on top I can’t name. I will look it up later. I got the generous 19 sampler set from their website after reading Luca Turin’s mostly glowing reviews of several scents, and it is well worth it!
Safe travels! Are you going for the winter? I had to look Placida up. My parents have a winter home in the panhandle.
Just for a couple weeks to see Dale’s 87 year old auntie while we can.
What’s happening in Georgia?
On Google maps a wide swath of Georgia is completely blank, I think indicating the path of Hurricane Helene. I would have hoped it would be updated and pretty much back to normal, particularly along the Interstate. but it is hard to tell. No frame of reference.
Have a safe trip, and a fun vacation.
Thanks! I am excited- we are making every effort to makethis be a low-pressure, fun time!
Oooh, I haven’t gotten to Grimoire yet, though I’m working my way through the same set for the same reason. 🙂 And I have been enjoying it. Looking forward Grimoire — maybe I’ll wear it tomorrow. I need something wintery — tried Racine Carrée today and wrote in my notes that I should come back to it in summer, as it’s not what I’m craving right now.
Grimmoire doesn’t change much, it still the heavy winter incense, less sweeteness on top, some menthol now to cut through the smokiness a bit. I am enjoying it a lot, just the thing for this grey damp day here!
Safe travels on the highways and byways!
I couldn’t find any tonka, so I just grabbed something out of my box of minis, which turned out to be Bottega Veneta. So, no points for me, but I am enjoying the scent.
You smell great!
You smell so good! I am sad that this one seems to have been discontinued in favor of their new, more expensive lineup.
Your SOTD is wonderful stuff!
I will be in very close contact with people today, so I had to forgo participating in the CP. I’m in a generous amount of Chanel Eau de Cologne.
Perfect!
Great choice.
I chose Hermes Caleche for the CP. Mr. G pronounced it “soapy!” and of course it is (in the best of ways), but I love it for its powdery-sweet woods and hint of oakmoss. Hope everyone has a great Friday!
Yes, it’s the good kind of soapy, totally agree.
I’m wearing the extrait de parfum of l ́Heure Bleue. This might be my favourite Guerlain, and it is just great for the dark and grey weather.
I’m off to the Netherlands this weekend and I’m not looking forward to it.
Good luck this weekend. I hope things go okay ( with your parents?) and you can get a break at some point to do something pleasant.
I will be visiting my parents, it should be OK, but I’ve had a very busy and tiring week at work so it would be nice to just stay at home. Thanks for your wishes!
So dark and grey, I’m with you on that. Interesting because I’m from Vancouver, where supposedly November is just dreary (and it can be!), but at least we get an hour or two of sun every so often as the weather moves through. I feel like here on the Rhein we’ve been fogged in for weeks.
I hope you’re able to just relax this weekend, at least as much as possible with the travel.
I need to get done of that.
Hello all!
John Waters was a hoot and a half last night. Strongly recommended. I could have listened to him speak all night.
I’m in Covet today, since I wore it to bed last night and it’s got some tenacity. Bonus, it has tonka in there somewhere.
Have a great day everyone!
He’s hilarious! I’ve never seen him in person but I’ve read most of his books. Glad to hear you had a good time.
The Criterion Channel is doing a John Waters collection next month with almost his entire commercial oeuvre — Multiple Maniacs, Female Trouble, Desperate Living, Polyester, Hairspray, Cry-Baby, Serial Mom, and Cecil B. Demented. (They aired Pink Flamingos and Pecker within the last year or so.) I for one can’t wait.
I’m in Amber 001 from Beauty Pie with top notes of Bergamot, Cardamom, Basil, middle notes of Sage, Cinnamon, Cocoa and base notes of Patchouli, Sandalwood, Vanilla, Tonka. They call it enticing and addictive, yet easy to wear. I would agree.
Thanks Jalapeno! I have sun today!🌞 Lillyjo, yes, the weatherman said snow possible for us later next week too.🫣 I’m not ready, but I guess we will be heading toward the end of November.
I had a double whammy of insomnia last night. Couldn’t fall asleep AND was wide awake at 3:30. I usually get one or the other, but not both. Lucky me. I made myself get up anyway when my alarm went off at 5:20 for my barre class. My reward was a massage afterward, and it felt so good.
A week from today I’ll have my gallbladder removed.😰 I had the consult with the surgeon in august and he was booked out until now. I thought, oh good, this gives me some time to process, and now here it is! I’m not afraid of the actual surgery, or the pain afterward, it’s the anesthesia that scares the you know what out of me. Just looking forward to getting it over with.
Good for you, for getting up and getting on with the day, in spite of insomnia. The massage sounds awesome.
It’ll be good to have the surgery over with-never a pleasant thought. Can you schedule a small treat/pleasurable activity for when you feel better? Another massage, maybe?
Well, I guess the treat will be all 3 kiddos home for thanksgiving the following week. I’m going to let them do all the cooking since I’ll be recovering from surgery.😉
Good luck next week. I always found that the anaesthetists were the calmest, gentlest most zen-like of all the people going into the theatre and so skilled at putting in a line that it was less stressful that getting blood taken. Just imagine yourself sinking into a beautiful, cosy, feather-lined birds nest, surrounded by green leaves and sweetly smelling flowers, a place where you are cocooned and safe, and snuggled up safely. It will be fine.
Aw, thanks Kanuka! That is such a lovely description, I will keep that in mind.☺️
Yes, I agree with Kanuka, the anesthesiologist is your best friend. Mine asked me “Are you ready to get happy now? I’ve got the happy juice!” and he sure did!
The anesthesia is the easy part. All of a sudden you are awake and the surgery is done. Good luck with it.
Thanks Kris!
Agreed. After having had nothing but outpatient, minor procedures my whole life, I’ve now had three inpatient/ general anesthesia surgeries in the past five or six years. Anesthesia is a miracle.
Get ‘er done! The post-op period is very undramatic. Wake up, and start walking asap. I fell in love with my SCD’s and still dream of getting a pair for my camper! 😍 Best of Luck! 🍀
Haha, too funny. Undramatic is exactly what I’m hoping for!🤞 Thanks!
Good luck with the surgery. My sister had hers out laparoscopically.
Thanks! Mine will be as well. Both my parents had theirs out emergently (genetics were not stacked in my favor😏) and my pcp’s advice was to get it done before I wind up in the ER!
Hope it is an utterly boring procedure…
Hope so too AnnieA, thanks!
Good luck to you on your surgery next week and look what you have to look forward to: all 3 kids home for Thanksgiving but you don’t have to cook. That’s a nice healing thought! And here’s a healing hug to go with 🤗.
Thanks Laila!
Your perfume sounds very good.
Hopefully your surgery will be uneventful, and it will be so much fun having your kids home.
Hopefully! I’m really looking forward to them all being home!🥰
Good luck with the surgery, and kudos to you for having kids who will take care of Thanksgiving for you! Ockeghem Teen has been in my kitchen a few times over the years but making multiple dishes would be beyond her — cooking is apparently not her thing, despite my attempts.
Thanks!
Well, I should have prefaced that by saying that I’ll make the turkey ahead of time this weekend, freeze, then let it warm in the crockpot thanksgiving day. I’ve done this for the past 2-3 years and we all really like it that way. They are in charge of the sides.😉
Best of luck with your upcoming surgery! Thankfully, most gall bladder procedures are laparoscopic these days. That’s probably cold comfort, though.
Still have more sun to spare until (hopefully) sometime next week! 🌞🌞🌞
Also: a friend sent me these audios prior to one of my surgeries (the most major and scariest, because it was unexpected AND was happening in June 2020 so no one could visit me, not even Mr. Skal). A mutual friend had recommended it and said she “didn’t know anyone it didn’t help.” For me, it felt lifesaving — and when the anesthesiologist was doing his immediate pre-op assessment, he commented on how calm I was (and approved heartily of the tapes when I told him why). YMMV but this was one of the best gifts I’ve ever received, and I still use them for anxiety and sleeplessness from time to time.

I’ve been a slacker for the whole week regarding the CP as I’ve been very preoccupied with “stuff,” so last night decided to comply and wore Shalimar MT to bed. I upped the dosage this morning by three sprays. It was wafting up beautifully from under my scarf as we went for a short walk this morning, and now sitting in the sunshine. 🌞
I’m sure you smell wonderful. I never did smell those first couple millesime iterations.
Oy! I forgot about this! Looks like I may need to do remedial perfuming!
Sorry to pull you out of what was probably enjoyable slackerdom…
PSA: 15% off full price items at Osswald “THANKYOU”
OHHHHHHHHHHHH
Thank you, I think 🙂
I think Boucheron – with a massive 28 notes listed on Fragrantica – must be my most useful CP perfume. No matter the note, chances are it’s in Boucheron. Tonka bean is in there too. We could do a CP with the perfume in your collection with the fewest notes listed ( or the most notes listed, though we’ve done kitchen sink scents I think). I think I have some perfumes with only a couple of notes ( Furze, maybe). Cold again, hail and rain 6C (40 ish). I have to go to Gladiator 2 with my son later.
Ha that’s funny, Kanuka, and you’ve got something there, Boucheron is gorgeous and it includes something for everyone. I suppose that Geza Schoen’s Iso E Super Molecule series and Juliette Has a Gun Not A Perfume would be candidates for ‘fewest’ ingredients but those are too one-dimensional for me. I’m testing vintage Aviance by Prince Machabelli (1975!) and in looking up the notes, I found that I was accidentally compliant as it has tonka.
Please do give us a report on Gladiator 2!
Kanuka, Boucheron is often where I start for a CP and I looked at it for tonka, too, but I had other things to wear this week.
I’m in Fumerie Turque for the tonka bean cp. I’ve also been spending time with my Serges lately and just added Fille en Aiguilles to usher myself into the holidays🍗🎄
You smell so good I may join you.
Please do!
Spending time with Uncle Serge never disappoints! You smell marvelous, Allo.
Thank you, DeniseH. It never does😊
Fille en Aiguilles is stunning in super cold temperatures.
I can’t wait to try it out!
Dzing! again for the tonka and the wonderful-ness.
Taking advantage of a beautiful morning to get some compost in the garden so I can plant my garlic. Should have been done earlier but oh well. Then we may even get some Christmas lights up. I love getting the lights up a bit early here to mitigate some of our early darkness (Seattle).
Scent twins! And early darkness twins, too, here on the 50th parallel.
Yes!
Not nearly as far north as you and ockeghem, but it’s been getting dark early enough here that I am getting grumpy.
I’m going with Dior Fève Délicieuse for tonka points. I have a mini of this and maybe wear it once a year. It’s nice in cold weather.
Be well, everyone!
You smell nice! This of course reminds me that I have a big honking bottle, not the biggest bit big enough!
Thank you, H! And so do you 😊
Yummy sleep. Will I ever tire of no alarm clocks? not yet!
Facial later today. I think Fumerie Turque to twin with allo.
My gift package from Dior is here with Ambre Nuit inside, ready to be unwrapped.
Think I will wait till tomorrow. Keep the thrill of a new bottle going.
My sister drove to Ocala today for the Florida swim and dive state championships. Her eldest granddaughter is diving. One week post surgery and she is doing really well. My nursing skills including ordering Thai food for delivery.
Glad to hear she’s doing well, apsara, and both FT and Ambre Nuit are marvelous yummy scents.
You have the BEST nursing skills ever! Glad she is doing so well. ❣️
Yay for Fumerie Turque twins and your sister’s rapid recovery!
I’ve always hated alarm clocks.
After getting the flu jab I fell asleep early two days in a row so didn’t comment, I hope my covid vaccine will be easier to handle. Today I was CP compliant in R&G Amande Persane and tonight too with A*Men Pure Tonka.
I had a very easy time with both flu and COVID vaccines this fall, (got them separately). Little sore arm next day, felt a little nappish, but no harsh reactions of any kind. (One time I ended up in bed for 3 days after a COVID shot, utterly exhausted-it was weird.) Hope yours are easy peasy!
Thank you Meredifay, it gives me hope. So glad I’m getting the vaccines separately.
Good luck with the covid Aurora! Mine was horrid but I got the novavax which almost nobody gets, so I’m sure yours will be better.
Thank you Robin, I’m not sure which one I’m getting, a UK vaccine I guess.
Hope that your COVID vax doesn’t knock you out!
Thank you Jalapeno, fingers crossed.
I’m still smelling last night’s perfume, PdN’s Caravansérail Intense, and it is appropriately named. It smells as intense as it did last night. Once I’ve sprayed it on fabric, I can smell it for weeks. If I’d worn this earlier in the week, I’d have been CP-compliant the whole time 🙂 .
That’s my backup buy if I don’t find anything else I want at PdN when I go at the end of the month. 🙂
Thirty two sprays of Burberrry Brit Sheer is my scent of the day. No idea if it has tonka. It makes me happy and I got a huge perfume compliment this morning.
32!?! 😮😂
Seriously – 32! 😵💫 Your skin must be really dry!
I can’t even imagine 32 sprays! I’ve got some scents where one spray is almost too much (Jubilation 25, I’m looking at you). Lately I’ve been doing 2-3…
That’s not all in one place, is it?!?
I’m in a sample of Uncle Serge’s Foureau Noir thanks to Tulipani. I get a chewy tonka mixed with some almond paste, underneath a gentle, cool lavender aromatic. The almond melds in with the tonka. The more I sniff it the more I like it.
Tea today is 80% Fortnum & Mason Breakfast tea 20% Clipper Ship Chocolate Orange. Last night I had a few slices of a Terry’s dark chocolate orange and I guess I unlocked a craving because now I’m trying to decide if I can sell my family on a chocolate orange chess pie for Thanksgiving.
I’ve always been curious about this one. I imagine you smell wonderful!
Mmm, chocolate orange chess pie. I just do classic rum cream and super dark choclate, but orange sounds good!
Oooh, rum and dark chocolate sounds delicious!
Ack! I haven’t even given a single thought to Thanksgiving yet.
I was tapped to host this year, and since then about 10% of brain has been all consumed with menu planning, oven time tables, etc. My anxiety likes to mask itself as logistics 😂
Ha! Anxiety masked as logistics! Thats a good one!
Don’t panic, having hosted for MANY years, the best thing to do is set a beautiful table and keep the menu simple—make as much/prep in advance. Oddly, the turkey is the easy part, but those sides will kill you!!! Make someone else bring dessert!
Thanks jepster! And yes, the sides are what have me breaking out the excel chart to figure out oven space, time, and temp compatibility.
I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying the Fourreau Noir!
I really don’t have much in the way of tonka, which is okay, as I decided I wanted to be non-compliant in Leather Jardin.
Nice day today, but it sounds like rain/snow are coming to the Midwest next week. I guess we can’t complain too much as it is that time of the year.
I miss that perfume! (It’s sitting at home for me when I get back there.)
Hope you get enough rain and/or snow to put a dent in your drought, but not enough to snarl things up.
Me too!
I’m in Oudh Lacquer from Soivohle for the project. It had been on my wishlist for years and I’m glad I finally picked up a bottle this spring.
I’m always happy to see Soivohle mentioned here!
I’m in Dior Addict. It’s really good in the cooler weather. We are having a slight break from the rain today but tomorrow there’s snow in the forecast. Might have to do a trial run of shortbread this weekend.
Happy Friday everyone!
OMG – we are TWINS!
Hi twin! Don’t we smell great?
Shortbread trial run…yum!
We’re supposed to see snow tomorrow so cookies might happen!
What do you do for shortbread? Always looking for new twists, shortbread is one of my favorite things!
The one recipe my hubby wants me to make is with a Toblerone bar. I usually chop it up in fairly small chunks and add it to the dough. I just use a whipped shortbread recipe and add the bar to it.
It doesn’t usually last around here too long so I have to make several batches before Christmas if I want to give any away to family members. 🍪🍪
That does sound good! Shortbread is so easy to make, it’s fun to fo lots of different sorts!
SOTD = Dior Addict
… from my vintage bottle. It is so good and I have a lot of it left! Also, TONKA!!!
https://www.instagram.com/p/DCZ48rIxaHJ/?igsh=ZjBpdXJ5N3llNmtv
I did a DIY earlier in the week. Nothing special but my deadbolt had been “sticky”. It was my front door and I need to be able to easily go out if I wanted to so my threat assessment radar deemed it high risk! WD-40 to the rescue. You would think that there’s only one type of WD-40, but then you would be wrong!
And finally, a question. I keep seeing “Dr. Squatch” soaps which bills itself as masculine and Costco has it on sale next week. If you or your spouse have used it, is it really THAT masculine? I tend to prefer less masculine but I’ve crossed the gender aisle occasionally. Thanks.
I see plenty of ads for “Dr. Squatch” soaps but don’t know of anyone who has used them.
I saw those soaps in the Costco ad that landed in my mailbox yesterday. Will definitely sniff them when I go to Costco next Wednesday. I’m tempted to buy them and hopefully love them.
I like to think of scents as not having gender 😅 but I do like the rebellious feeling i get when I cross the aisle. In any event I imagine it would be easy to return the soaps for a refund if they are a big no go for my nose.
I’m wearing Lolita Lempicka today. Fragrantica says it has tonka, and who am I to argue? I don’t smell it, just the lovely anise and violet notes.
Yep, you smelled great today foxbins!
I’m in MFK Grand Soir which was the only perfume I could find that I own in the entire Fragrantica list of perfumes with a tonka note. I’m not sure I can identify the tonka in here but it’s certainly a gorgeous gorgeous scent! I feel very elegant especially since I just ventured to have my first shower in five days–that felt good too. I have been having about ten yucky side effects of all the medications I’m on after surgery and feeling bed-bound and sorry for myself. This too shall pass. I will avoid the news, watch a good k-drama, cuddle up with cats, and just relax awhile.
Hope you feel better soon! Sending you a healing 🤗 from me and from my 3 babies, too, 😻😻😻
Goodness, I hope all the side effects vanish and you can start feeling better. Relaxing with K Drama sounds a good plan.
I did love seeing the picture of all the caregivers. 🙂
Glad that you felt well enough for a shower and perfume today!
Kitty snuggles have magical healing powers.
It is quite possible that I don’t have a single tonka in the house, and instead I tried the sample of No. 5 L’Eau. It quite nice, and could see myself with a decant at some point.
Glad you found a new favorite AnnieA!
I ❤️ tonka and for today’s cp I chose (La Maison de La Vanille) Vanille Fleurie de Tahiti. The vanilla is warm and sweet with a glaze of fruity amber; other notes include bergamot, cedar, ylang ylang, incense, and, of course, tonka bean! A number of years ago a very kind perfumista gifted me with 4 of the vanilla scents from this line because she said they were too sweet for her. I love sweet when the weather cools so I have enjoyed rotating them all!
A tiny peek of 🌞today finally breaking thru the clouds. Temps have been very mild but it’s been cloudy and drizzly/rainy for days. We’ve had some nice musical moments this week, my favorite folk singer performing in my community for a social action group and a wonderful violinist at our library yesterday as well as a special showing of The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) at our historic movie theater on Veterans’ Day – the story of 3 men returning home after WWII, a poignant, touching film I highly recommend, especially for those of us who’ve had family members who served in that war. But a nice relaxing weekend is ahead and I’m looking forward to tucking in.
Happy Friday and Happy Super Moon to all!🌕
I watched The Best Years of Our Lives Monday, it’s such a good movie. Enjoy your relaxed weekend.
Yes, it’s a 🥲. My mom and dad were married for only several months when he left for the war overseas; they didn’t see each other for 3+ years! I couldn’t imagine what that must’ve been like, then I saw the film and now I can.
Wow, what an experience they went through!
I have to post and run. I chose Dior Addict for the cp today.
Hope it’s a great weekend for everyone!
Beep beep, Road Runner!
There’s a few of us in Addict. We’re a good smelling group!
Another scent twin!
I seem to have pulled a hat trick in posting late this week. Another productive afternoon, though, so that’s the upside. 😊 Nice temps today with plenty of sunshine, but there was a temperature inversion, and the Brown Cloud really evident right before the sun went down.
SOTD = JM Myrrh & Tonka, thanks to Deva! I smelled great when I was driving thru more road construction.
We are twins, one day apart!
You smelled really good today!
Commando today because I was at an event where I was around a lot of people, but now that I’m home I will put on some Feve Delicieuse. I always chuckle thinking of Luca Turin calling this fragrance “boring beans”. I quite like its sweet powderiness.
Wishing everyone a good weekend! I have grand plans to be productive and declutter some “terror zones” in my house, we’ll see how it goes.
You smell wonderful…you are twins with adanst!
