Happy Friday, plus happy National STEM Day and National Cappuccino Day. Birthdays: Bram Stoker, Minnie Riperton, Bonnie Raitt, Kazuo Ishiguro, Rickie Lee Jones. Our community project for today: for the 10th anniversary of our Friday projects (give or take a few months), we're repeating the first one we did, way back in 2014... think of your favorite fragrance note (or one of them, if you can't narrow down), wear your favorite fragrance that features that note, and tell us about it. Thanks go to happy888cat who noticed the anniversary!
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
Me: still out of town without any perfume, and zero points for my DIY lotion with ylang and sweet orange, but extra points for massive ice cream consumption yesterday (and which I hope to repeat today). After lunch I had a scoop of Roasted Banana and a scoop of Guava from Mimi's Handmade in Arlington; after dinner I had a scoop of Banana and a scoop of Dark Chocolate Fondente at the Pitango in Penn Quarter DC. I will be on a diet next week.
Reminder: on 11/15, wear a fragrance with tonka bean, if you have one.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Hello, tgif and happy 10th anniversary NST!!!
One of my favourite notes is amber so I am wearing my holy grail of ambers, Ambre Sultan. The weather may still be warm but I am rocking it with full force. 😎
One of my favourite songs is Lovin’ You by Minnie Riperton so I will play it to honour her today.
Oops I meant 10th CP!
OMG, Minnie Riperton had one of the most incredible voices ever!
I can’t believe it but next year will be our 20th anniversary (!!)
20 years!!! Robin, you deserve the perseverance award of the century!🥇
I am very glad that you have been keeping on for that long, Robin!
NST is an affirmative resource for those who love perfume – there is always a spirit of fun and curiosity to be found here!
one of my faves and you smell amazing, happy888cat
House twins today – I’m in L’orpheline. I have AS but have not spent much time with it, so I’m glad to hear from a fan.
I’m wearing Safari, which is filled with my favorite note, galbanum, secondary points for tagetes (Marigold), which it also features and which I also love.
I wore Safari yesterday! Love that one.
Ralph Lauren made some amazing fragrances back in the day. Lauren, Tuxedo, and Safari were the high points for me and you smell marvelous, Priscilla E and Mals86 (hi Mals!)
Ooh, Tuxedo! I had that one back in the day. And of course Lauren; a classic.
Hiii!
Marigold is an excellent choice – you smell wonderful!
TGIF! I am so drained this week and look forward to the weekend.
I picked orange blossom and Houbigant Orangers en Fleurs.
Same – I plan to sleep in for much of the weekend
Hope you have a rejuvenating weekend!
Bought some ice cream to join Robin. The flavor is called Triple Chocolate (or three chocolates, if you translate literally).
Oh good! Ice cream is important.
Fingers crossed that you get some much needed R&R this weekend.
I went in a slightly different direction and picked a perfume that won me over: Orchidée Vanille. Vanilla has never been a note I’ve been drawn to, other than in ice cream, but VCA did a very high-classy one.
Oh that’s perfect AnnieA!
I went down a different direction like you did, but with patchouli.
I’m still in New Delhi, away from home and I didn’t pack too many perfumes, but I brought two with one of my favourite notes, frankincense: Providence Perfume Co Tangerine Thyme, ebullient and sun drenched citrus-incense scent, and La Via Del Profumo Holy Water, with its meditative citrus, rose, incense and sandalwood mix. However, all I’m thinking about today in terms of perfumes is The One That Got Away. I love champaca as a note and I have been enjoying inhaling its aroma – as much as inhaling is possibly in Delhi air – from the giant tree outside the house we’re staying in. The only perfume that I ever found that really captured that aroma was CdG Champaca, a limited edition which came in a cool pyramid bottle and which I discover from a tiny sample from Lucky Scent. By the time I decided I needed a full bottle, it was already discontinued. I will have to hold on to the memories and fresh flowers.
Photos of the champaca in bloom: https://www.instagram.com/p/DB5c9swxv-U/?igsh=MXVocG1zNmxqc2N6ZQ==
Gorgeous picture! Do you know the Ormonde Jayne Champaca? I like it but don’t have the real thing to compare it to.
I have tested Ormonde Jayne Chamapaca but that one is doused in so much of Geza Schoen’s trademark Iso-E Super, which am anosmic to and which registers to my nose as a waxy void, that I can’t really say I know what the whole perfume smells like. Passed on that one for this reason. For anyone who can handle it, it’s probably a very nice scent.
There is so much love for the OJ scents but I’ve never found one that works for my skin chemistry though I wish I did, feel like I’m really missing out but the nose knows what works and what doesn’t. Maybe it’s the Iso-E Super that gets stabby on me throughout most of the range.
Lovely! I have only smelled the real thing once, at a botanical garden, it is an amazing smell.
Thanks for the lovely photo, akimon. I wish I could sniff it with you!
Such a pretty picture! Definitely cheering me up. Thank you!
Cuir de Lancome today. I do love a very floral leather.
*waves to mals86*
Waves back!
Hi stranger! Lovely to see you here!!!!!!!!!
Hiya mals86! You are wafting some gorgeous stuff today!
So glad you’re enjoying all the ice cream, Robin! Nothing like it (or a nice warm pain au chocolate, which is the reason I’m now on a diet)! I’m once again trying to crack my sugar addiction, so no ice cream for me. 😏
I’m wearing Arabian Oud Kalemat on a brisk morning. I’ll be heading to lower elevation as soon as I’m able to pick up my delayed mail on Monday. I “discovered” this one from an NSTer you may be familiar with by the name of hajusuuri 😉. She kindly sent me a sample moons ago and it was love at first sniff. A rich, voluptuous amber that is wonderfully diaphanous and light as air. There’s a lovely floral note in the background that highlights the transparent glimmer. I get some sweet honey, but not heavy or thick and I swear I smell tobacco even though it’s not a listed note. Blueberries are listed in the opening but I have never been able to discern them although many reviewers with more sophisticated noses than mine have commented on it as “bright and juicy.” It’s very cozy and comforting and the longer you wear it, the prettier it gets. Also, lasts forever on both clothes and skin but wears fairly close and will never rudely clear a room in 10 seconds flat.
And apropos to nothing, while I was researching some beading patterns, I ran across one that is simply stunning! Inspired by stained glass windows, it’s uncanny how the mind is immediately transported to the hushed nave of an old and holy cathedral. As soon as I saw it I knew it would be mine, but I wanted to wait until after my trip to France so I could more closely emulate the colors in the very old 12th century stained glass panels I saw. My beads are on their way and I can’t wait to start it!
Happy friYAY, and may your weekend be filled with fun, relaxation, friends, and food! 😀
This scent sounds amazing. Going to look it up.
I have been reading about this a little more. Is it like Indochine?
No, I don’t find it similar. To me, Indochine is all about the spice fest. Kalemat is more of an amber-honey-floral to me. I’m happy to send you some if you want to try it. Just email me at Taiga101 in the land of yahooligans and I’ll get it out to you. I’m currently waiting for some delayed mail and can send it off to you Monday or Tuesday if you like. Cheers!
Thanks so much. I will email you now.
Bet the pain au chocolate you had in France was a bazillion times better than the stuff I see at Costco!
You bet correctly! And the crusty bread- crust so crisp it will cut the roof of your mouth! 😋
I am pretty sure when I get home to my scale tomorrow I will be readjusting my food intake next week, but that’s ok, it was worth it 🙂
My favourite note ever is oakmoss, not really seen any more, so I have to rely on vintage chypres to get my fix. I don’t really have a favourite chypre: I love a whole bunch of them in different ways. Today I’m in Molyneux Fête from some time in the sixties: I have hardly any left so I’m enjoying the heck out of it while I can.
Great and unusual choice!
Favorite note twins! I don’t know Fête, but agree about the vintage chypre world and have collected quite a few myself.
I’m rounding out my week of amber scents in Ambre Narguilé this morning, after having worn Omnia Ambra at bedtime last night. Meanwhile, apropos of absolutely nothing (other than perfumes), Mr. G ran across this in his daily perusal of Reddit and brought it to my attention (I actually had to go find a different story about it because the link he sent me had a word in it that wouldn’t fly here at NST):
https://www.dannydutch.com/post/how-you-could-buy-perfume-in-1925
Wow, that is the most amazing presentation EVER! Would love to get my hands on something like that, thanks for posting!
So cool – thanks for sharing the link.
Thanks for sharing the photo SheriG, very cool!
Wow! That is cool.
Thanks for sharing that link! Stunning perfume presentation. 😮
Oh fun, I would buy that in a heartbeat!
Back in Perris Monte Carlo Rose de Mai. It hits the spot🌹
Yay then!
One of my favourite notes is Rose. Today, I am wearing Merchant of Venice Rosa Moceniga, this became one of my favourite roses. It’s unusual, fresh, doesn’t smell anything I know.
I’m was it’s you on the rose side and wearing OJ Ta’if. I must try to find some of your scent to try!
Joining you in the rose bed!!
Robin! We were just at Mimi’s Handmade middle of October while visiting our son. He lives in an apartment in Arlington just a few blocks from Mimi’s (I just saw your post from yesterday as well mentioning Mimis). And yes, we repeated our visit. Many points for ice cream fun!
I’m in a spritz of JM Ginger Biscuit which has vanilla and spices all of which I love, although I don’t love every perfume that has them. Ginger Biscuit is a fave and not overly sweet to my nose.
Oh cool– my sister lives pretty near your son then! Last time I was here I really enjoyed the Thai Iced Tea and Thai Basil ice creams, but this time I got really stuck on the roasted banana.
I wasn’t planning on wearing this scent today, but ringthing changed my mind yesterday. I was never a patchouli fan until the last few years. Like AnnieA said about vanilla, I say about patchouli. It finally won me over. I have a triple dose today with BBW Into the Night shower gel, Coco Noir body cream and Coco Noir perfume. I must say it is beautiful 😊
I’m still working on expanding my mind to include patchouli. I can wear a few fragrances with it (Noir de Noir, Mx., Profumum Patchouly), but I sometimes perceive it as sour or moldy and then it’s a no-go. It’s not like I have to love it, I know, but there are many fragrances that contain it and I would just love to be a bit more open to it.
I had a friend that used to wear a patchouli oil that was just too “hippy like” or something that turned me off to it years ago. Today, there are so many scents that include patchouli, but it is not so “in your face” strong.
You smell fantastic, Kris. I agree; patchouli can be hit or miss for me. Coco Noir is not too “noir”; I was quite surprised when I sampled it.
It is a beautiful scent.
Kris, you smell especially wonderful today!
Thank you 😊
Like Gail, Coco Noir is probably the patchouli that works the best for me! Lemming wants to run to get that body cream – you smell great.
This one works well for me too. The body cream is an added touch. I like using it on freshly shaved. More information than you needed😉
One of these days I might give Coco Noir a sniff. But I’m afraid I might have another Chanel lemming if I do! Plus bottle pr0n.
Actually, I think you would love it!
Wearing vintage no 19 edp today. Rose is one of my favorite notes. Could have gone with Lyric but it’s a little too much for work.
I’m wearing enough Lyric for both of us!
Hi guys!
Patchouli has always been my favorite note. I’ll go with old faithful, Karma.
Hello AnniePerfumes, and you smell marvelous!
Hi Denise! Thank you. Nice to see my old friend.
Hiya AnniePerfumes! We are patchouli twins today, sorta kinda. 😁
Hey!
Patchouli for them win! Hugs to you.💗 And giggles.
I’ve been pondering this CP topic and concluded I don’t really have a fave note but my fave group of notes and house has got to be the Serge Lutens Orientals. (Do we have a better word to encompass this genre?) They are heartbreakingly beautiful, rich, complex, warm, sexy, profound, well-blended, especially the earlier ones. (I have not fully embraced the more recent ones). I had grabbed a decant of Arabie last night to spritz before bed and am still wafting the drydown. But Chergui, Ambre Sultan, Fumerie Turque, his santals, and so many others really hit my sweet spot. Speaking of FT, and please delete if this isn’t allowed, but I’m trying to source a Fumerie Turque Palais Royale bottle for a friend. I made the mistake of sending him a decant for reference because he was exploring tobacco scents, but I warned him that the formula has thinned since then. But alas I have now created a monster lemming in him for a Palais Royale bottle, and since he’s not all that familiar with the online buying sites, and one must of course use caution, I told him I’d try to help him find one. He know it will be spendy but he’s obsessed. If anyone has one they’re not reaching for, please LMK.
Michael Edward’s changed “ oriental” on the perfume wheel to “ ambery”
https://www.gcimagazine.com/brands-products/fragrance-home/news/21862163/update-goodbye-oriental-hello-ambery
Thank you Kanuka!
Yes, it looks to me like most places that have stopped using oriental have started using some form of the word amber.
Arabie is so good. I haven’t kept up on the releases.
There is a shopper that goes to France, she might be able to help.
Am iffy on rose–sometimes it’s lovely, other times it either cloys or
annoys. But today am in Rose Cherie, which I’ve enjoyed since the get go. It features heliotrope, a fave note.
Perusing samples, noticed TF Soleil de Feu, which I never see anyone mention. Might give it a spin soon–no idea where it came from.
Report back on how you like Soliel de Feu.
I would also like to hear your thoughts on Soleil de Feu.
Today I’m in Chanel La Pausa edp. I got a bottle of this after I received a decant of the edt from some very generous NST’ers. By the time I tried it, the edt was already gone so I purchased edp. No regrets! I love it.
I’m forever grateful to the lovely NST’ers who shared “their precious”. Perfume people are the absolute best!
Every time I see La Pausa, I think of Hajusuuri’s nickname for it.
I may have missed that. I’m sure it was priceless though!
The first version was “8-Spray La Pausa”, since the EdT was called 28 La Pausa. And the lasting power of 28 LP wasn’t the greatest.
But the number of sprays got upped as time went on! 🤣🤣
Thank you!
Perfume people really are the best!
Incense is a note that I like very much, so today I am wearing Messe de Minuit.
What a great incense perfume, you smell wonderful.
Happy Friday everyone!
My sotd centers around clove, one of my favorite notes. The original Commes des Garcons was my first “niche” bottle purchase and I still love it, my current bottle is close to being thunked. It opens with clove and runs through a delightful kaleidoscope of spices and deep, dark notes, forever cementing my love of both spicy and moody perfumes.
Hope your weekend is relaxing and happy, NST. Enjoy every bite of ice cream Robin!
I don’t have anything by that perfume house, but this one sounds quite nice.
The original CdG is one of the best incense perfumes I have smelled. At least, that’s what my nose tells me. 😍
Do many of their scents lean masculine? I was thinking that was why I kind of stayed away from them.
They have a lovely carnation.
I’d say a lot of CdG scents are solidly unisex/shared. Nothing comes to mind as being super hairy-chested.
I’m wearing Bal a Versailles for what be my fave note of all, civet. Good civet in perfume smells like honey and warm sunshine to me.
That is an excellent description of how I find civet, too. You smell wonderful!
Good morning from my weekend away. We’re only an hour’s drive from home, but we don’t travel frequently for weekends, so it feels like an adventure. I work with people who commute from here, they’d laugh at that.
I’ve got way more perfume with me than I expected, as we were leaving yesterday morning, we spotted a package of samples that I’d been expecting. I’m currently wearing a dab of Azemour les Orangers, which I’d tried years ago and couldn’t remember.
Have a happy time!
Oh fun! And how do you like the Azemour?
Two of my favorite notes are sandalwood and vetiver. Tough choice! So I am wearing Vetiver Oriental, which has both notes. This is one of my all-time loves.
❣️Love VO!
Is that one of the SL perfumes you can only get in Paris now?
I haven’t looked for it in such a long time that I don’t know. Even my BUB was bought years ago.
Gotcha!
I can’t decide on my favourite note as a lot depends on curiosity, mood, time of day or weather. I do like ambergris for its warmth and sweetness but I also like ambers and resins for similar reasons. I like ambery/ spice perfumes but also incense, leather, tobacco. There are about fifteen rhododendron trees currently in flower around my house and the smell is incredibly, a cross between magnolia, Christmas lily and carnation. So, at the moment rhodendron is my favourite note. Wearing Fer de Vierge.
Keep up the ice-cream research Robin!
How lovely! We are having such warm weather here, I wonder if we are going to have a less than stellar spring bloom next year. We’ll see!
I have done my best on the ice cream and it is a good thing I am going home tomorrow 🙂
Like Kanuka, I don’t just have one favourite note, but several. One of those is lavender, so today I’m not wearing my favourite lavender perfume, but the one closest to it, By Kilian’s A Taste of Heaven (my favourite lavender is of course Impacte de Pour un Homme by Caron).
Caron does such good lavender.
For me, it’s a tie with jasmine and rose, but the rose won today! Meeting up with my darling book club for dinner and wearing some lovely Lyric to celebrate the day!
Partial note twins with you today! But I’m wearing patchouli and rose.
Happy Friday! 😅 Oy vey…it’s been a long week. Revisiting Hilde Soliani Panna Montata today. I had a dabber sample which I drained and put on my list of potential FBs. But I have been trying to not buy everything I want (it’s a new plan 😉 ) so I ordered a 2 ml spray sample to try and smell myself out of it. ehaeheh 😉 I sadly still quite like it…will see how I feel at the end of the day.
In other news House She-ra has had quite a bit of illness…She-ra Mini had the worst stomach bug of her short life this past Sunday but thankfully recovered quickly. I have had a mild cold this week and then She-ra Mini didn’t feel good last night and had a 103 fever!?!? but no other symptoms,. I gave her ibuprofen and she had no temperature or any other symptoms when she woke up today. 🤷♀️ Hope everyone has a relaxing weekend and indulges in some extra self-care…because we are all worth it like the L’Oreal reminds us…sending hugs to this lovely community. 🥰
Hugs back She-ra, hope mini is feeling fine soon.
Thank you, ringthing! ♥️
Wishing good health to She-ra Mini and everyone in your household.🤗
Thank you, Laila! ♥️
Sending hugs to you, and I hope She-ra Mini is all done with the crude. Ha, ha: I have been trying not to buy everything I want too! Darn! But have to admit I do have some very nice things I can wear in consolation. Have a great weekend! 😀
Thanks, MossyBerry, hope you have a great weekend too! ♥️
Ewwwwwww. Sending healing vibes and hugs to the House of She-ra!
Thank you, Jalapeno! ♥️
Goodness…wishing you both a weekend of good health!
Thank you, Robin! ♥️
Ambre Sultan is my scent of the evening and night.
Worth wearing all day!
🙏, Robin, for the link to the 10th anniversary cp post from 2014; I so enjoyed going back there and reading everyone’s post! It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years, and I noticed it was my first post after finally de-lurking after a long time.
In that post, I said ‘Intrinsic to my nature is the unexplainable need to be in harmony with the world of Nature outside my window. Hence, my favorite note/scent changes as the seasons evolve.’ As that post was made in May and the lilacs were in full bloom, that’s what I wore as my favorite note. I’ve remained true to my nature all these years later, and what’s happening outside my window still influences my favorite scent note. For autumn, it’s always woods and spice, and as autumn gets colder and the days grow shorter, I begin to seek the sweetness of gourmands.
So, for a beautiful 🌞fall day, still with colorful trees – mostly gold, russet and brown – YR’s long d/c Nature Millenaire satisfies me like no other! YR says it is a ‘ woody, spicy scent, with scents of earth, bergamot, orange, cardamom, coriander, cinnamon bark, cedarwood, incense, myrrh, benzoin.’ The woods and earth notes in this are outstanding, and perhaps it’s the benzoin that gives it just a hint of the caramelly sweetness I ❤️. (And I know the men’s version of this scent is a favorite of pyramus.). Today after running a few errands, we went for a nice drive in the Forest Preserve to see some of the golds, russets, and browns remaining and saw 3 beautiful deer grazing who didn’t mind our presence; it was a few treasured moments of ☮️ in a week that was difficult for many of us, and the Nature Millenaire was a perfect accompaniment to that experience. Last night we went to a fascinating program at our library about herbs that the Native American tribes in our area grew, and their medicinal uses and recipes. The speaker passed around dried samples of many of them, and I think perhaps the combination of all those fragrances inspired me to reach for the Nature Millenaire today.
Wishing ☮️ to all this weekend ✌️!
(And enjoy your ice cream, Robin. Sounds delish!😋
That sounds wonderful! In addition to the ice cream I did lots of walking on this trip, but it does not feel like fall here at all…and random trees here and there are yellow or red but many are still green, or just brown from all the dry weather. So hope we still have some color to come, we’ll see.
For the CP win, Estee Super Parfum from a lovely original bottle I found in an antique shop, with the full presentation. Per Fragrantica: “Estee was launched in 1968…created by Betty Busse and Bernard Chant.” I’ve learned over the years that I want some sweet and spice with my oakmoss, rather than bergamot-aromatic combinations. Estee brings it all on in my favorite way with honey and yellow flowers, carnation and sandalwood, coriander and tuberose, and peach and raspberry and… I think it’s a brilliant use of oakmoss that has a bohemian vibe but also makes me think of a best-dress, night on the town. I find it to be very feminine, but the spicy dry down could have unisex appeal. I know I like smelling it, anytime on anyone.
Wow! That Estee Super Parfum sounds amazing.
I remember getting a makeup bonus with purchase years ago. It included a mini spray of Super Parfum. I used up every drop!
You smell so good!
Watching the weather do whatever it wants to today. It has oscillated between rain, snow, and the dreaded wintry mix here. Ugh! Despite all that, my brother said his commute into work was NBD. Just wet roads. I wonder if he will be saying the same on his drive home…
I have several perfume notes I favor heavily: incense, rose, jasmine, good sandalwood (no stabby notes!), and patchouli. Plenty of lovelies to choose from.
SOTD = Zara Fleur de Patchouli. Been enjoying the wafts from this a lot today, and it has 2 notes from the list above.
I got my new tires for the winter today. Do they salt the roads there or just use sand?
In Colorado, CDOT uses something called Mag Chloride. It’s a sticky brown goo that has a lower freezing point than your basic rock salt, NaCl (aka Sodium Chloride). No sand.
My brother HATES Mag Chloride with a passion. He has a little white truck….
I need to sniff you!
Enjoy watching the weather, you could send some gentle rain my way.😊
Fleur de Patchouli was probably the best of my 3 blind buy perfumes from Zara.
I think folks to the east of me will be getting some kind of moisture in the next couple of days. Right now, Kansas and Nebraska are getting drenched.
Funny, I thought about this wearing this one today too. I had planned on doing rose or iris all week but changed my mind to patchouli. BTW I did find a rose/iris scent, but I don’t think of them of either in this scent-Chanel No 5.
You’re right, No. 5 has both rose and iris. But I can’t pick out either of those notes from it.
Boy, I screwed up my words in that post. Glad you could understand it. Also, laughed at your hairy chest comment above🤣
I chose tuberose as a favorite note for today. My sotd is Ysatis. I should have went with Poison though, as work tonight has been rough. Sleeping in tomorrow!
Glad that you will be able to sleep in!
PS. Here’s something silly you might like.
https://youtu.be/LMlYmW7dwwM
Smelling fine!
Slinky Carnation, my DSH custom, has most of my favorite notes–obviously carnation, but there’s also animalics, jasmine, honey, gardenia, and mysore sandalwood in there
That sounds so lovely.
