It's Tuesday, and summer is (unofficially) over. What fragrance are you wearing?
I’m wearing Kenzo Air. Tea at the moment is Cascadia Breakfast from The Jasmine Pearl Tea Company.
Reminder: on 9/6 we'll do Jolie Laide Friday...wear a jolie laide perfume, howsoever you wish to interpret the term (for help, though, you can see The Unfairest of Them All at The New York Times.) Suggested by austenfan.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the Frustum Teapot from Shinzangama Yamatsu ("...inspired by a traditional Japanese iron kettle (Dobin), not just a visual delight but also ensures a stable and ergonomic pour. Made from premium ceramic, this teapot is meticulously crafted to provide exceptional heat retention, allowing your tea to steep perfectly every time") is shown in natural glaze, also available in white, black and light ink, $129 at Omakase.
Hello.
Sotd is all 5 scents from Christian Louboutin’s new Fétiche Collection.
Here are my thoughts:
L’Ambre
On a coffee table (HOL by IKEA) sits a sandy-beige wooden box (TAVELÅN), inside you can spot a few sad broken pieces of amber. Are they meant to be there? They do give off a little waft of scent so, whatever, I guess. In the box there is also a lonely stalk of tuberose, green and vegetal, young and not yet blooming. It happens to be in a vase (BERÄKNA) full of creamy coconut milk. Ah, the sophistication of it all.
L’Iris – best of the bunch
Achoo!! Ooft, that’s a big puff of powder. Ah…it’s also kinda rooty; it must be iris! Do I have a great nose or what? Hang on a second, what is that other earthy thing I smell? Patchouli. How original! Gotta write this combination down on something, like this random piece of old parchment I have laying around. Better keep it away from open flames though, with it being so dry and all. Oops, too late, now it’s all up in smoke.
L’Ebene
“Excuse me dear poolboy, can I please have a glass of today’s special mocktail? I’d love to try it.” “Try…? Excuse-moi Madame, but this will be your third..” “Third!? Surely not… I think I’d remember having something twice in the last half hour.” “I will bring you your drink right away Madame.” *Sips drink* “Let’s see: Aquatic cucumber, lots of watermelon, a dash of perhaps, coconut water? This cedarwood cup is also kinda cute” *15 minutes later* “Excuse me dear poolboy, I’d love to try…” “Oh mon dieu.”
Le Cuir
Gum. Plastic, fruity gum. (Juicy Fruit? Hubba Bubba? You wish.) Notes listed osmanthus but the nose, Ms. Karagueuzoglou, seemed to have asked what it smells like from google instead of referencing raw materials: Osmanthus has a mouth-watering, honeyed, apricot-peachy top note. “Peachy-apricot Dr.Google says, then peachy apricot it shall be! Oh and I got to make it honey sweet too!” “Almost forgot, the name calls for leather. Okay then, let’s put in some suede. But not too much because I spent so much effort googling osmanthus, I’d hate for the spotlight to shift focus.” Et voila!
L’Encens
The nose of this, Mr. Paul Guerlain, may have the makings of a great father. Hear me out. His brief was to create a bold blend of fiery and cool spices, enigmatic and captivating, transforming the wearer into the likeness of a forbidden fruit. But what he created for us, his perfumed children, was baby chai, second steeped, so we wouldn’t burn ourselves. The spices are so mellow with barely any warmth, a gingersnap or cinnamon roll would be spicier. I am sure he did this out of kindness in his heart. Why else would he go against his brief like this? In a further attempt to protect us, he paired the chai with a smoothie of India’s proud export, guava. Soothing indeed. Thanks dad, but I’ll be moving out tomorrow. Pweese?
Thanks for these – fun reading!
Brilliant – thank you!
Love this!
Very creative.
Also love the reviews! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! ♥️
Love the sleek, minimalist lines of today’s teapot.
I have a routine doctor’s appointment this morning so I’m wearing one discreet spritz of Cashmere Mist. CM has been in rotation lately because I forgot how pretty it is and it’s perfect for days when I just want to smell nice.
Everything OK at your appointment?
I’m in Glossier You for back to work. I got an email from Glossier over the weekend that they’ve added a You body cream. I will definitely be getting that at some point.
It’s a gorgeous morning here. The only thing that would make it more perfect was if I didn’t have to work.😝 I am permanently discombobulated on what day it is. Thursday through Sunday felt like Saturday and yesterday felt like Sunday. Thank gosh it’s just a 3 day work week for me.
They gave free samples of that in front of the US open, it wasn’t for me, I am glad you like it!
The holiday weekend messed up my count of days as well. It feels like Monday today for me.
Escada Casual Friday on a Tuesday. A crime it was discontinued — a complex, spicy floral for men unlike any other. How can I have been wearing this for 25 years?!
I don’t know Escada Casual Friday but I do know the feeling 🙂
Morning!
It’s not fall – this is extended August, thanks very much 🙂
Hermes Apres La Mousson for the win-discreet and it just makes me happy. Wish I had a trust fund so all I had to do was walk someone’s dog all day. Insert joke about why am I not rich instead of good looking here 🙂
It’s not fall until September 22 anyway 🙂
Spent a decent amount of time yesterday moving all of my clothes back into my room and in dresser drawers. Part of the reason it took so long is that I wanted to be sure about the dresser situation was settled and conjured up the motivation to actually accomplish it. Now the guest bedroom is cleared out and cleaned up. Can’t seem to muster up the energy to tackle my closet though. That’s a project for another day. Spending the day in Clinique Happy today and relaxing before work.
Dawn, it’s such a good feeling to accomplish a project! There’s always more one can do. Enjoy this one being checked off your list.
SOTM (and bedtime last night) is Carthusia 1681, a lovely herbal sandalwood accented by black pepper. SMN Eva also has black pepper, and it’s another top-ten favorite so maybe I should explore the note further? Easily done, says fragrantica — I already own 14 perfumes that include black pepper. Apparently I just need to pay more attention.
LOL! Sounds like you really like black pepper notes in perfume!
Evidently! I wonder if it’s the most represented single note in my collection. I would have guessed iris for that, but now I’m curious!
Ah, no — my original guess was right. According to fragrantica, 46 of the perfumes I own have an iris note. 🤣🤣🤣
Happy Tuesday, everyone.
I’m wearing Elizabeth Arden’s “Green Tea.” I blind bought it because it sounded like it might be up my alley, and it was ultra cheap. And you know what? It’s quite charming! What a fun little discovery, (which happens to be well-timed for this heat wave.)
The Green Tea shower gel is very refreshing in the heat too.
Now you have about a zillion Green Tea flankers you can explore 🙂
It’s been a rather hectic morning. I’m wearing Shalimar Body Créme today because I was one flake away from disappearing altogether. When you use straight up Squalene oil on your face and your skin drinks it up like water, you know you’re a bit dry…
In other news, I’ve been asked to come back next year and do all the bookkeeping…why, I have no idea. I flunked algebra and geometry TWICE EACH in HS and had to go to summer school. When I went to college I had to start off with “Algebra for Idiots” and work my way up to get accepted into the nursing program. I explained all this to the manager but he was not convinced, stating “I recommended you because you’re smart and easy to work with.” Breaking that down, I think what he’s really saying is I’m the one who has bothered him the least with BS stuff…remains to be seen if I’ll do it or not. On the flip side, I could still take my child to work! If
I know this is an impertinent question, so feel free not to answer it, but do you think you will ever go back to nursing?
I quit healthcare (medicine in my case) nearly four years ago, and even though I sometimes miss the wonderful chats with patients, I don’t think I would like to go back to it. So I was just wondering.
I know you aren’t asking me, but I am going to chime in anyway😉 I was in nursing, mostly administration and education, for 40 years and for the most part loved it. However, I love retirement and since I still do presentations for the Alzheimer’s Association on a volunteer basis, I get just enough of my geriatric background usage to keep me happy.
That is great. I actually put my medical knowledge to good use in what I’m translating, so I’m combining my love for languages with my love for all things biology/medicine.
Good for you!
A very windy response 😜:
Not an impertinent question at all! My whole working life has been in medicine, minus my first job at Wendy’s slinging burgers. At one point, long ago, I remember thinking it would be impossible for me to even date anyone outside of the medical field because I was 100% in it and loved it. It was a very large part of my identity. I worked 5 years in ICU 2007-2011 and 2016) and I think it broke me. After that I worked from home for the first time ever for four years because I was just toast. I went back to bedside/hospital nursing in order to travel, but hospital care in this country is absolutely atrocious. I thought Covid times were the worst, but nope, the worst times continue. The feds have opened an investigation into private equity firms buying up hospitals and stripping them to bare bones, then offing them. Any decent care in rural areas has just about disappeared because these hospitals and clinics don’t make money. Healthcare here has gone from caring and delivering the best quality care to making the biggest profit for CEO’s and shareholders. I have worked with so many wonderful providers who I’ve learned so much from, who really cared, but they have been bludgeoned by insurance industry (and many other things) to the point some are leaving the field altogether. The insurance and pharmaceutical industries are so unscrupulous…one insurance company is being investigated because software they use declines 90% of claims…I myself had an anesthesia claim denied even though the exact same claim for the exact same procedure with the exact same provider had been approved a year prior. I understand a business needs to make money to stay viable, but the pendulum has swung so far towards profit, I doubt it will ever be normalized. What does this have to do with bedside nursing, I’m sure a million people are wondering..? Everything! No staff to SAFELY monitor and care for patients, the majority of hospital nursing staff are “new” nurses that will leave the bedside within 5 years, equipment that is broken or straight up unavailable, the cheapest possible kits( Foley, CVL kits, LP kits) possible, no patient education and no clinical nurse educators at many hospitals… ad infinitum. HCAPS, which is an initiative that started over 20 years ago, has changed the focus from delivering outstanding medical care to providing a hotel/spa like experience for the patient, and their (the patients) uneducated opinions about the care they received leads to reimbursements for the hospital from the government. So literally, the patient could receive THE WORST medical care, but if the pillows are fluffed and they can get whatever they want, they will respond favorably. I could go on forever, but I’ll spare you. So, I MAY do one more contract when I get back from vacation, or I may not. Depends on how comfortable I feel, money-wise. But my goal with travel nursing has always been to get rid of any and all debt, downsize and minimize, find a home on wheels that is well made and will last a good long time with care and attention so I can do whatever the hell I want, not have to be forced to do things that are, in my opinion, completely unethical, and finally, to not be beholden to “the man” ever again. A pipe dream, I’m sure but I’m still gunning for it!
I have a friend who is a physician and has gotten out all together as well. More and more medical people are leaving the field here. There is a wonderful video on YouTube by a neurosurgeon, who is now unemployed, and why he left the left after spending so many years in school and working 20 years in the field. So many highly educated, CARING people who are just done. Here’s a link if you’re interested in watching the video:

Whatever you do, do what makes you happy and to hell with the rest of it. ✌🏼
Wow, that’s quite a reply, but I get you. I won’t respond in too much detail as that would lead to a political discussion and I want to avoid that. The situation is not quite so dire in the Netherlands (and Luxembourg is very well served, but then again Lux. is filthy rich) but the Dutch health inspection recently closed down a commercial organisation providing family health care (I don’t quite know what general practitioners are called in the States), the inspection’s comment was that it was risking peoples lives closing it down but letting it continue was even riskier. And we need GP’s to keep health care affordable. It’s such a complex field.
I hope that you can find something that suits you after your holiday in France.
We are in dire need of GP’s here, and it’s not a field incoming med students are interested in anymore. I’ll miss a lot of things about being a nurse, but there is more and more responsibility laid at our feet here in the US and the pay does not compensate for that kind of load, not to mention the workplace violence that is happening with alarming regularity and frequency. Hospital admins have so far refused to do ANYTHING to protect staff. Eventually, it will be legislated in, but until then, nothing will be done. I had a horrible experience myself a couple of years ago. It’s very underreported and not covered by mainstream media. I won’t miss that part of nursing AT ALL.
Interesting to read this because I have been lately planning for an exit from my physician job in about 2 years. Some of my desire to exit is for family reasons. My husband is older than I am so if I work too much longer, I fear he will be really too old to travel – even now, his aging is affecting a lot of our plans. I see a lot of what Deva describes. Some of my dissatisfaction could be my own hang ups but a lot of my colleagues have the same complaints. I have been pretty sure that a portion of the physicians rounding at the hospitals are not going into the patient rooms but documenting (and presumably billing) as if they are. Besides this being FRAUD, it means I get a barrage of complaints from the irate patients and families when I go in the rooms and I really don’t know what to tell them. (The patients could complain to the hospital but one of the main offender physicians belongs to a group OWNED by the hospital so not sure how that would go.)
I think there may have to be some sort of restructuring of health care, maybe in wake of a dysfunctional collapse. Meanwhile, I just fear for myself or family members if we get sick – pray for good health!
I never made it past elementary algebra, barely passing. Lol. I think it’s great they asked you back!
Aww, but you passed and that’s all the matters!
Hey, congrats on being asked to come back for your summer gig next year!
It’s been many, many moons since I’ve done any algebra.
Thanks, but not really keen on doing payroll for 30+ people in addition (se what I did there?😜) to balancing 20+ campgrounds…I can feel a migraine starting…🙃
Yep, I caught your pun!
Gabrielle Essense
Has anyone smelled the other flanker for this one?
Tea is two cappuccinos
I am preparing for a difficult conversation this afternoon and I am mentally on it.
If you mean the L’Eau one, I have not tried it. I did hear people mention they liked it. I personally enjoy both the original Gabrielle along with the Essense. I also really like the body cream.
I like the Essence too!
Good luck with your difficult conversation. Sometimes I psyche myself out too much worrying about all the possibilities and things go much better than I expected. I hope yours will go extremely well!
I tried the new L’eau flanker and loved it. It’s very soft and pretty smelling. Good luck today!
I was thinking it was you, but wasn’t positive. Did you like the other iterations?
I did like the other one’s, but found them both too sharp. I would have to spray very lightly to avoid a headache. The L’eau version suits me better.
ok..I will sniff this out!
I did try the new Gabrielle and I liked it.
ok good!
I hope that your difficult conversation was easier than you anticipated and is over with now.
https://www.theguardian.com/books/article/2024/sep/01/precipice-by-robert-harris-review-asquith-venetia-stanley?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other
I know some people here like historical fiction and a novel I’m enjoying is Precipice, set in 1914 ( in the run up to WW1) and centred on the real-life love affair between British PM ( Asquith), a man in his 60s and a 26 year old socialite, Venetia Stanley. What makes the book so interesting , apart from the history related to WW1 and Ireland ( Unionists ) is that Asquith’s actual letters to the woman were sourced and included. There’s a fictionalised secret service policeman, to add a kind of suspense element. A quick read but a good one if historical is your thing. I’ve never read Harris before. Wearing Alina ( Lush) .
I’m intrigued-thank you for the recommendation!
ooo! I am intrigued !
ok..library has it on order..I am 17th in line
This does look interesting. It does have good ratings and from what I am seeing, his other books are good as well.
I feel obliged to wear my interpretation of Jolie laide all week. Interestingly the term is not known in French.
I think of Jolie laide in perfume as fragrances that are not conventionally pretty, or that are beautiful in spite of awkward opening notes…
My SOTD is ELdO Rien, starkly beautiful, but not very easy to like.
I am thinking of the cp in similar terms – not conventionally pretty, but still beautiful in some way. Or at least beautiful to me!
I like this jolie laide cp concept. I like lots of things that I would consider jolie laide as far as some of my clothing and my “interior decorating” like pottery and paintings.
Today I am going with SJP Stash. It is an interesting and beautiful mix of spices and woods, but I would not call it conventionally pretty.
You smell pretty jolie to me😊
Ha – thx! ♥
Great CP choice, and an excellent scent. My mother and I both love it.
Fun that your mom loves it, too!
I think that one is perfect for the CP.
IIRC, I couldn’t smell Stash. Pretty sure I am anosmic to it, which bummed me out when everyone here was singing its praises.
I have to say I kind of like it, but it had kind of a sweaty/dirty smell to me.
Amouage Gold today. Not jolie laide, but it’s one of my samples here and worked for a hot day. I’m still trying to adjust to starting work at 2:30 p.m., especially when it’s nearly 30 C at that point and I’m sitting in an apartment on the fifth floor with only a fan. Maybe that’s jolie laide? Or just laide?
We were thunderstorm-adjacent today and I have hopes for tomorrow.
My boss thinks I’m living the life in Europe (and I am eternally grateful to him for fighting to let me work from here for a few months when the company was trying to shut that down). He’s like…you can just take the train anywhere in Europe on your day off! I’m like…um, I went to Worms yesterday. It’s not like I’m spending my days in Paris. 🙂 No perfume in Worms, just investiture controversies, diets throwing Luther out of the Catholic church, and an amazing Jewish cemetery that miraculously survived. So, the things that keep the medievalist in me engaged while I do my job at home. 😉 But not so much Paris, or even Strasbourg…
There is a really nice tea shop in Worms called Nibelungen Tee, I don’t know if you are interested in tea at all, but just in case.
I’ve still got those Hiram Green samples for you, if you are interested. I will gladly send to you in Germany. Just let me know.
Oooh, I’ll stop by that tea shop next time I’m there. I love tea!
I would love to try those Hiram Green samples — thank you for remembering! Feel free to email me at L S L O U F FM in geemale land. 🙂
Kyoto today. Have not reached for this in quite some time and it is lovely.
It’s warmer than usual here by the water, but cooler than lot of parts of LA.
I am very close to the homes here in RPV that are being evacuated due to hill movement during the rains. Those folks had no power, no gas so repairs could be done by the city. I am just grateful for the bit of distance.
The Wayfarer Chapel that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wrights son has been taken down over the past months.
It had a beautiful huge glass front to welcome sailors home from the sea and that is sad.
Apsara, has that chapel been taken down permanently?
Yes. Gone.
That’s a shame.
SOTD is Zara Romance d’Iris. This is really very nice so not CP compliant. I am still debating on that one.
I’m going to have to give this CP some thought too.
Maybe Black Orchid? May be too warm for that.
Black Orchid is rather masculine on me and always has been. No floral notes on me in the slightest. I must amp up the truffle.
Wearing SMN Gelsomino to be jolie laide compliant. It’s one of those indolic jasmines many wouldn’t find pretty but I sure enjoy it.
Is it anything like Rogue Jasmin Antique? I think that is quite indolic.
They are definitely both indolic but the SMN is more of a straightforward soliflore jasmine whereas the Rogue seems to be softened by the clove and vanilla.
And I just smelled the sweetness of ripened banana in the Rogue. I might have to pull out Blackbird Y06-S later this week for the full on banana/jasmine.
😂
“Indolic jasmine”? I’m in!
Thanks for the idea, I might use that later on this week.
I can always count on you, my indolic fragrance friend!
I also thought indolic perfumes would fit the CP pretty well. I’ve never tried that SMN, but I bet you smelled great yesterday.
I haven’t picked a SOTD (which is silly, given that it’s after 5 pm here …) but I have a new stash of samples thanks to one of my daughters! She went to DragonCon and came back with a handful of Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab samples for me, not knowing they are a well-known niche brand. Kudos to them for having a booth at DragonCon! She brought me: Vixen, White Rabbit, Urd, Bruised Violet Compound, and Aperotos Eros. Has anyone here tried any of those?
Haven’t tried any but I adore BPAL Endymion. ♥️ Your daughter is very thoughtful. 😊
What a wonderful gesture!
But I haven’t tried anything from BPAL at all, sorry.
sotd = Eau Des Merveilles 😊
because it always makes me feel good.
Also, it gives me a jolie laide vibe, widely speaking. I don’t often get comments on perfume because I’m a one spritz gal most of the time.
Even so, EdM gets a fair share of “who smells ______??” Fill in the blank with your imagination . 😅
It’s a love or a dislike for a lot of noses. I love it!
Are you sure you want me to use my imagination?? I can be rather “creative”. 😉😈
I like this one, but have only received one compliment.
I’m feeling much better today, so I did put on some perfume, but I went for jolie alone (no laide) in Shiseido Memoire. I’m just not up to anything challenging or difficult; I just wanted something comforting and pretty.
I’m starting to get a little stir crazy, and would love to get out of the house, although I shouldn’t. It’s probably just as well that it is really rainy today, as it wouldn’t be much fun to go out in that anyway.
Glad to hear that you are feeling better today!
Thanks. I still have a fair amount of “crud” to clear out, so I’ll be blowing my nose and coughing for a while, but otherwise I feel OK. Mostly I just feel really weak and run down. I’m supposed to have jury duty Monday (Sep 9), and am thinking I should postpone it. I am still testing positive and don’t know if I will be negative by Monday, or if I am, whether I will feel well enough to sit around the courthouse in a room full of people all day. Our county allows you to postpone once for any reason. The difficulty is that you only get one postponement and the next soonest dates available are in November. Who knows what will happen between now and November?
Oy! Tough call on jury duty postponement.
Yeah, I’m thinking that even if I am negative and not contagious by Monday, I’ll probably still be coughing quite a bit, judging by other respiratory illnesses I have had. People these days are understandably uncomfortable when someone around them is coughing a good deal. I wish I could just delay it a week or two.
Trying my hand at jolie laide perfume with Frederic Malle Une Fleur de Cassie. It’s gorgeous, but it also has a hint of something funky that some may find off-putting. This one was love at first sniff for me though.
Great call!
You smell wonderful and thank you for the cp inspiration. Une Fleur de Cassie is one of my all time favorites but I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
It’s a really exceptional perfume. I’m glad you love it too.
Lots of laundry for me today. Got 3 loads done, and figured that was good enough. Might have to wash towels soon though…
I received my samples from Fztoic this afternoon in the mail, so I couldn’t try them. Already wearing perfume, and didn’t want to muddle things up. So I currently have a total of 9 samples: Lampblack, Vetiverissimo, Monserrat, Soft Focus, Corpse Reviver, Feu Secret, Five Squared, Poof!, and Au Dela Narcisse. I already have a travel spray of the ADN, but couldn’t resist adding a sample to my order. The first three samples have been in The Sample Stash for quite a while now.
SOTD = back in Smell Bent St. Tropez Dispenser Gold EdT. The time is coming for it to go back into storage, and other things to take its place. It definitely smells of Summer.
How do you store the out of season perfume? In boxes?
I have 1 document box, and a couple of storage drawer units in one of my closets. Nearly all of my perfume is kept away from heat and light anyway, except for 3 or 4 bottles of interest on my dresser.
I have a bunch of samples in my Luckyscent cart. For Fzotic I have ADN, Ummagumma and Unsettled. Have you tried the last two? I haven’t tried any of them and don’t even know why I have selected them. I have had them in my cart for a while along with a few others that include Indochine and Bukhara. I have no idea if any are worth trying😂
I’ve tried both Unsettled and Ummagumma. Liked Unsettled enough to get a travel spray of it. Ummagumma should have been a “Love” based on the notes, but I felt smothered by it. I ended up rehoming that sample.
Thanks for the information 😊
More perfume fun. Remember when I ordered a bottle of vintage Dune from Etsy a few weeks ago, and I noted I got a rather cryptic confirmation? Well, it came today, a perfectly wrapped in layers and layers of bubble wrap, new in box dauber bottle! It smells great! It came from Moscow, wrapped in packing tape printed with words in several different alphabets. Adorable hubby was nervous-“Its not going to blow up, is it? What did you buy from Russia?” The world gets smaller all the time. Also got the bottle of Epona, from LuckyScent. I am officially on a perfume no buy! Well except for current items in negotiation! September is shaping up already. Sorrow for those grieving in Israel. Prayers for our friends in the Ukraine- hope everyone is safe. It was so cool here I spent the day in sweatpants and a hoody.
Oh, and another splendid teapot, Robin! I can see that one on my tea table!
Same here 🙂
Got a good chuckle from “What did you buy from Russia?”
Did you get my message regarding Shalimar MI? I sent it a few days ago.
Oh yes, sorry, Failing to focus! I will respond to it now.
No problem. I just wanted to make sure you received it.
I put my daughter on the bus this morning and went back to bed and slept until 11. It was nice. I had an appointment today and wore the last of my Terracotta. I’ve been a thunking machine lately. I’m trying to beat evaporation. I’m still not feeling 100% and plan on going to bed early.
Have a good night, and feel even better tomorrow!
Amouage Interlude Man – the weather is getting cool enough to wear heavy scents like this one. Is it a jolie laide scent? Some are definitely put off by it. I am really enjoying it today – like a soft warm shawl around me on this cool evening.
The news from Poltava and Lviv are tragic, and I do not even know what to say.
Another fan of Interlude Man here.
I have no words about Poltava and Lviv either.
