Happy Almost-Friday! It's also National Mint Julep Day. Birthdays: Countee Cullen, Benny Goodman, Colm Tóibín. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Kenzo Air for the air element of the Covarrubias mosaic. I cannot claim any extra credit for my prosaic image-fragrance matches this week.
Reminder: on 5/31 we're doing the Picture challenge, edition 9...wear a perfume that matches the image, which is Genesis, The Gift of Life, a 1954 glass mosaic by Mexican artist and anthropologist Miguel Covarrubias. More info here.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: above is the right third of the 1954 glass mosaic Genesis, The Gift of Life, by Mexican artist and anthropologist Miguel Covarrubias, via Dallas Museum of Art at Facebook. [You can find nice shots of the mosaic's detail at Flickr here, here, here, full shot here.]
Bound for Portland today. I expect I’ll be one of the few masked folks on the plane, so I’ll probably spritz the inside of my mask with something pretty and life affirming like Lys Mediterranee from Frederic Malle.
If any of you NST folks are familiar with Portland’s wonderful perfume boutique, Fumerie, let me know if there’s something I MUST try. I’ll be visiting the store with my fragrance obsessed daughter.
Happy Thursday, everyone!
Oh, you will have so much fun if your daughter loves fragrance as much as you do!
They’ve got a new line that Tracy is very excited about and I’d love to hear your thoughts on those. It’s called Binet-Papillon; she wrote “we are currently their only retailer in all of the US.” Let us know!
Ooh, thanks for the heads-up! Will definitely try it!
Good luck on your flight!
I’ve only been to Portland once and didn’t make it to any of the perfume shops, so please report back what you find!
Thanks! Fumerie is the only shop I know in Portland – there may be others. It’s a charming spot, and they’ve got some great houses represented.
Portland is also home to The Perfume House, few blocks from Fumerie. It has older brands (it used to have Caron urns!) but they carry all of Serge Lutens except the bell jars and lots of men’s lines.
Will check it out! Thanks!
Just an FYI Daniel. Your Rogue you wore the other day is on sale at Luckyscent. Just noticed it after ringthing posted the PSA.
Ah!! Thank you!😎
2 perfume obsessives + Fumerie = Heaven!
In addition to what Calypso suggested, I would add checking out Quartana and Himo Jima, two lines not at Luckyscent. Have a fabulous time!
Can’t wait to try!
Looking forward to hearing what you and your daughter come across.
After all the iris talk yesterday, I had to go with Shalimar MI.
Shalimar ! Can’t go wrong
Agree
I agree too😊
PSA: Luckyscent has a bunch of stuff on sale right now.
It is a gorgeous day here, what madtowngirl calls a bluebird of a day. All I want to do is enjoy it!
Wearing Imaginary Authors Slow Explosions.
Today really is gorgeous! One of those days I wish I had a house by the lake.
not reading this…
These are not the discounts my wallet is looking for!
Does the Jedi mind trick work on perfume lemmings?
Bluebird of a day here too, utterly wasted on various plumbing issues (why can’t all water stay where it belongs?) & other stresses. Off to beach tomorrow and CANNOT WAIT.
Oh yuck to the plumbing issues, but yay for the beach!
Ugh, plumbing issues SUCK!
Seriously…the worst.
I grabbed another bottle, this time You or Someone Like You. I wanted to use something citrus forward today. We are having heat index temps in the triple digits, and it’s been raining almost everyday.
That’s a nice one!
I’m so dry that our weather is already like July!
SL Chene.
There is a hand with a sprouting seed on a different section of the image (the one we saw yesterday). Here is how it is explained on Dallas Auction Gallery’s website:
“To the right we see a hand emerge from the dark clouds holding a young red oak. This seedling symbolizes the nurturing of youth and the responsibility that each generation shares for the next. The idea of the red oak came when Peter was out walking with his young son and discovered a red oak acorn, just broken open with the root starting to reach down and the sprout starting to reach up. According to Peter, ‘That seemed like a perfect symbol for the gift of life – natural, indigenous, and dramatic.'”
Ooh, I love Chene. Such a rich scent with the best oak note. You smell fantastic.
Nice choice and a great story!
Great pick Glannys.
I am awash in the last sprays of my Le Labo Iris 39 decant from two swaps ago, inspired both by the twilight purply blue part of today’s image and Jessica’s iris post from yesterday. This is one of my favorite iris scents and quite unique IMHO. This is a dark moody goth iris, all swirling black lipstick darkness with an animalic edge. Definitely FBW and I’ll be on the lookout for a bottle now that I’ve thunked my decant.
What a great description of Iris 39! Now I need to revisit that one and give it a proper wearing:).
Hello!
Wearing SL Rousse for some fire and citrus:).
Packing up the freebies and should be on their way soon!
Excessive heat warning today, the first of many lol. The time of year where I crave lots of citrus, especially, lemony notes. An FB of Eau d’Hadrien is on the want list:) Ooh and I see they have a shower gel in that scent 👀. Lemmings of lemons lol.
Have a lovely day! 🌹
Omega, I love Rousse, and it also combines well with Fleur d’Oranger-you smell great!
I love Hadrien, too. I love lemons in everything. Where did you find the shower gel?
Today I’m in Hermes Pamplemousse Rose-cheerful shade of green for the bottle. This is another cologne that really lasts in the heat. Loved all the Le Bain products but many seem to have been culled from the line.
Thanks! Fleur d’Oranger is great too, that sounds like an interesting combination!
I guess the Goutal is called shower oil and it’s on their website:
https://www.goutalparis.com/en/products/eau-d-hadrien-huile-nectar
Pamplemousse Rose, haven’t smelled that one a while, the bottle is indeed great!
In a while* lol. I remember liking it some.
That Eau d’Hadrien shower gel would come in handy for this summer. Just saying. 😎
An absolutely gorgeous morning here! Our two Japanese maples are being thinned by someone we haven’t used before but who is vouched for by someone we’ve used extensively, and so far the work done is quite impressive.
I chose Maison Crivelli Rose Saltifolia for the ocean wave in the mural. Not sure how I’ll roll tomorrow, CP-wise.
Japanese Maples are gorgeous!
I love coming across a well manicured Japanese Maple in someone’s yard. Such a pretty tree.
So far I have been lazy today. Currently in Mitsouko edp today since it is the only perfume that spoke to me today.
Took advantage of the Luckyscent sale today and got the Pichola travel set from Neela Vermeire. Afterpay can make things “affordable”.
Good pick with Pichola! Very underrated in my opinion.
Agree. Love Pichola.
I am sampling the new Chanel Cristalle EdT today for the library.
Anyone have any thoughts?
I am having raisin toast with butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar.
Thumbing through the paper and listening to NPR BBC news hour.
I haven’t tried the new edt. What are your thoughts?
I sprayed it this morning and now it’s completely faded.
I have an old Cristalle EdT so I can side to side compare one day.
To my nose this new one is less loud, softer, more lemony. Is it wrong that I think I like the Verte flanker I wore yesterday better??
Chanel plus raisin toast, very me. lol. Love cinnamon raisin anything. Have not tried the Cristalle. Did you get it from the boutique?
Yes, I got a sample of Cristalle and the Vert flanker.
Fleeting but I enjoy it while it lasts. Tomorrow I will try the cologne from
exclusif line
Last time I checked the Chanel US website, the Verte flanker was not there. I’ve heard rumors of it being discontinued.
its there on the website
Interesting! Thanks for looking.
Hello everyone!
I’m freshly back from Italy, where I spent the week with my family in a villa we rented. I had only been to Italy once, and visited the major cities rather than the country-side. It was so beautiful, and quite different from the usual flatness of Houston. I could get used to being up in the cool mountains….
I did buy a few perfumes while there; I’ve been on a low buy but I sold off a few redundancies in my collection for spending money. First, I discovered that at the Heathrow airport duty-free, the Chanel extraits were all ringing up for about $100 less than in the US (not including the Texas sales tax I’d be paying), so I finally got my Beige extrait. Waiting for a special moment to open it.
I also ventured to Campomarzio 70 in Florence, to pick up a bottle of Onda Voile d’Extrait. I honestly prefer the EdP but since I have so little of the actual extrait, the VdE is a nice alternative to it. My sister-in-law very diplomatically smelled the tester and said, “Not for me.” While there I tried the new L’Objet by Jean Claude Ellena, Kerylos, which is a fruity marine that really sings to me. I know that category isn’t really for everyone but it wasn’t ditzy, Windex-y, or trite. And it’s very full-bodied, compared to some of his work at Hermes.
Lastly went to L’O Profumo. I smelled a lot of things I haven’t been able to try before, and was especially wowed by the Austrian brand Wienerblut (a bit unfortunate name to Americans, but the story behind the line is very cool.) I tried a few that I liked, and ended up with Sale Marino, a salty-cool eau with just a touch of seaweed in the base. I wish Galveston beach smelled this good.
I’m a bit jetlagged but still have a few days before summer classes start. I’m perilously close to finishing the shirt that I’m knitting (ironically started it for Italy, but I ended up really disliking the way I extended it, so tore out about two weeks worth of work), so that’s my plan for today. Also borrowed about 10 books for my trip and only made it through half, so might try to finish a few more. I got stuck on a thorny piece of speculative fiction, and might just move onto the next.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading!
Welcome back! Glad you enjoyed your trip and came back with some great souvenirs!
Thank you!
Welcome back, sounds like you had a smashing time. Firenze and its countryside is one of my favorite places. + perfumes
I had a great time. Perfect little trip!
welcome back!
Thanks you!
Whereabouts in Italy did you stay? I travelled a lot in Italy in the nineties. As far North as Milan all the way down to Sorrento. Beautiful art and gorgeous food. I particularly enjoyed my visits to Tuscany.
Your stay sounds idyllic (and very fragrant!).
South of Florence, near Greve in Chianti. The only downside was the narrow gravel roads!
I just looked it up. Really, very nice. I’ve only ever travelled by public transport in Italy, but remember they had a rather lively driving style.
I always get rather anxious on narrow roads myself, still I’m sure the views were worth it.
Yes, I got to know the busses and trams very well! I didn’t drive, but my brothers did. It was very concerning!
Welcome back! Including stops at perfume shops during a dream vacation, now that’s a dedicated perfumista! 🌟
Honestly, I would have gone more if I could! It’s a fun past-time for me.
More is better! 😉
Glad you enjoyed your trip, sounds like a lovely time! And congratulations on the Beige Extrait! 😍. I don’t believe I have tried that yet. I bet it’s fantastic.
It is quite lovely, fuller with a deeper drydown.
Sounds lovely. Glad you are back safely.
Thanks!
Welcome back! Sounds like a very enjoyable interlude. And good to know about the Duty Free at Heathrow. 😉
Going to England soon?
I wish!
I was pretty surprised. If I’d come back through I might have added another one, so luckily I didn’t!
Welcome home, or sorry you had to leave Italy, whichever you prefer. Sounds like a wonderful trip, wonderful perfume shopping, everything.
I missed little Jicky but I definitely loved Italy. I’m trying to talk my best friends to going back. 😉
Wearing le Rivage des Syrtes. I find matching art to fragrance difficult and as I’ve been super busy I’m not even going to try.
I wore Après l’Ondée yesterday, very appropriate as it has been raining buckets again.
I wore Iris Ganache the other day..its like Apres l’Ondee but different in other ways
Don’t try, there’s enough to do already, right?
Apple and yogurt smoothie but I’m having tea first.
It’s been an unseasonably cool day even for the UK and there was a windy rain episode which reminded me of an April shower. So felt I needed warming, spicy scents and reached for Diptyque l’Eau and tonight I finished a decant of PoaL but I have three to go as the seller had sent me four decants by mistake, I have to be in the mood for this one as it is slightly relentless.
Your posts have me craving apples more and I bought some Opal apples recently:). They are so delicious. Haven’t tried them in a smoothie but I bet they would go really well. Now I want yogurt in apple caramel flavor lol.
Enjoy, yes, very good in smoothies, I use plain yogurt, flavored yogurt would be great I’m sure but slightly less virtuous😉
I also have to be in the mood for PoaL. I have had the same 3ml sample for years it seems. I apply lightly.
Frédéric Malle perfumes are no wallflowers but this one in particular is so strong, well, it’s good in a way because we’ll never need a bottle.
Had to laugh at “relentless,” non-PoaL-lover that I am. 😁
😁It’s such a commitment, sill present on my hand even after washing.
Pretty sure that POAL will be a cooler weather scent for me. Roses aren’t typically something I crave in summer weather.
Definitely not a summer fragrance for me. I have to wear it when it is cool.
Wearing my Bee Balm from Lush. I don’t know why I keep buying perfume when my dog licks me.
That said, Luckyscent sale. I’m 👀 London Funk and Bois Sacre. I price checked some and Roja was cheaper at Joma.
What to do?
Hope you have been doing well. Hugs to those who need them.
I looked but everything would be a blind buy for me. I’m not feeling risky atm.
Good reminder!
Hey, good to see you!
Already spent some $$$$ for a perfume from Zara. Waiting for it to show up. So I will take a pass on the Luckyscent sale.
I’m with you and my Zara purchase is coming tomorrow😉
My purchase showed up late this afternoon. And of course, I was already wearing perfume. 🙄
So good to see you.
What was from Zara? I stayed away from Luckyscent, hoping I’d be saved.
I’ll be checking.😬
I’ve actually recently purchased 2 perfumes from Zara. One was Leather Jardin, which a few people here at NST enabled the purchase of.
The other, which arrived today, was Fleur de Patchouli. Both fragrances were composed by Jo Malone.
SOTD = Jo Malone Honey & Crocus
Mild honeyed perfume! Nice!
We’ve been at the airport since 12:45pm for a … 5:30pm flight. It is what it is. The check-in was chaotic in the sense that we were told different things by different people. In any case, I had a late lunch very expensive but tasted pretty good. The water, omg, so expensive but what can you do?
Anyway, hopefully the rest of the journey to get to Copenhagen will be uneventful.
Be well everyone!
Have an uneventful flight!
Oof sorry about the waiting at the airport and yes, everything so pricey there. Hope the rest of the trip goes smoothly.
I always drop by the chocolate shop at my airport because, I can’t help myself lol. I go there before take off and after I come back usually lol. Dark Chocolate Lemon Satin Cremes, yes, they are as good as they sound:).
🤞for uneventful!
What a lovely time of year for Copenhagen! Hope you have a boring flight and wonderful trip! 🍀✈️☀️
Yikes! That’s a long time to wait at the airport. Safe (and boring) travels!
Fingers crossed for uneventful!
Safe travels hajusuuri, and yes, uneventful.
Uneventful is always a good thing.
Happy travels!✌️
Lubin Grisette today. My husband said I smell nice, and obviously he is correct.
Working on a thorny project at work, but it is a one person project so i don’t have to collaborate with other people and that takes some friction out of the process. I can listen to my podcasts and put my head down.
Happy Almost-Friday!
You do smell nice! Last Lubin I tried was Epidor and absolutely loved it. Best of luck with the project!
Lubin Grisette is a favorite of Vee’s, IIRC.
It’s a super beautiful day here.
I did my grocery shopping today, and still don’t know what to make for dinner. Stupid inflation.
My phone call with the Principal went well yesterday, and we have a new plan in place for the Fall semester.
I am wearing No.5 L’eau but am also retesting Alien Hyperscense
I’m liking it better this time. It’s basically a light Alien but with a lotion feel to it.
Glad that you have a new plan for your daughter next semester.
I wasn’t sure what to have for dinner today, either. I finally just grabbed something out of the freezer and popped it into the oven.
Oh yay, that’s great news — the principal, not the grocery prices.
Yay for the new plan for your daughter, you can relax now.
Wearing Nothing but Sea and Sky for dental appointment and a day of organizing at home. My mother in law died a few years ago and when my husband helped clean out her home he brought boxes of photos and memorabilia and deposited them in our study, amongst some of our own stuff. I need some uninterrupted days to grow through it and kept deferring. I am finally getting it done, sorting into piles for the husband’s siblings. Otherwise I think this would happen after I die, since husband is not good at organizing. I want my study back. I rarely work in there because the junk gives me anxiety.
I am more and more in the mindset of downsizing all this stuff that surrounds me, though much of it isn’t mine. My husband is always thinking that he MIGHT need some of this -someday – but the more likely scenario is he cannot find the few things he DOES need because they are buried.
Not downsizing perfumes yet.😁
Good luck with your sorting project. Those can be incredibly difficult.
I went through that for years. If the stuff is giving you anxiety, and you can afford it, insist he get a small storage unit and move all the stuff he might need someday there.
Ooooh, didn’t mean to sound so strident! Sorry, just a suggestion of course, but your anxiety tickled my anxiety about excess stuff!
We have done that in the past, while moving/renovating. But I am convinced that the best path forward – not the easiest – is to downsize the clutter. I can see storage units for temporary but ultimately we need to lose some of this clutter.
Good luck then!
I’m sorry. I am your husband. Sometimes you just want to disappear rather than deal with all of your folks’ belongings. Its a struggle.
Had a little bit of motivation today. Still feeling kind of meh. Maybe it’s time to figure out an exercise plan to shake me out of this rut.
SOTD = Smell Bent Pepper Ylang Frankensmellie EdT. It’s a case of “Exactly What It Says On The Label”. Black pepper and ylang ylang actually are a pretty compatible match.
I hope you get out of your rut soon Jalapeno.
Thank you lillyjo.
Had some excitement with the weather earlier tonight. Big thunderstorms and some hail. Unbelievable amounts of lightning. Apparently May and June are the worst months for it here.
I don’t need that as a cure for my rut! 😱🌩️
Sorry you are feeling meh! Exercise is worth a try, sure helps me.
Thanks Robin!
My Jalapeno is in a rut? You are wearing perfume, though.😊
I saw a slew of Smell Bents in my collection the other day and thought of you. In a good way. That sale was nuts!
Hope the mehs go away.
I’ve noticed a lack of motivation to do things for a couple of days this week. Just not at all interested. I don’t like that.
And yes, that Smell Bent sale was crazy.
Do you have pretty walks near you that you could take?
Testing Fzotic Feu Secret today, which just arrived in a gift package from a wonderful NSTr! I am becoming quite a fan of this line; I don’t know what has taken me so long. There is a beautiful woody note at first, which quickly segues into a creamy iris, and now a leather note which I think must be birch tar, since birch is listed in the line-up. I wonder if it will change again?
Also, finally taking a point today for the name, signifying the flames. Not exactly secret, but still…maybe half a point?
Great scent. I am also a fan of the line even though I don’t love them all.
I know, I don’t think that I love all the frags in any single brand.
