Happy Friday and happy Dutch-American Friendship Day! Our community project for today: we're off to the Netherlands (aka Holland)! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in the Netherlands, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to the Netherlands, or that features a local ingredient, or ?
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
After reading Cutting-edge tech made this tiny country a major exporter of food in The Washington Post (fun fact: The Netherlands, "which is a bit bigger than Maryland ... has become the world’s second largest exporter of agricultural products by value behind the United States") I decided to go with Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Kaleidoscope for the connection to greenhouse vegetables.*
Reminder: oops, we've run out of Friday projects, again! I will restock this weekend.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m in Luctor et Emergo from POTLUCK, which is based in The Netherlands.
Gonna guess that POTLUCK was an autocorrect, but it’s actually a good name for a fragrance house.
People of the Labyrinths. Sorry, I was in line at the McDonalds drive through when typing this.
Scent twins today, we smell wonderful!
In Hiram Green SlowDive for the CP.
Very busy day. Back to read comments later.
Happy Friday! ☕️
Hope you are close to having your work slow down a bit. Enjoy your weekend!
Thank you, Ringthing! I’m glad the day is almost over. One more week, and I hope work slows down. I am eagerly looking forward to it!
Love Slowdive! You smell wonderful!
Thank you, Hajusuuri!
I was twins with you today. Slow Dive is my only Hiram Green fragrance, but it’s a good one! We smelled great today!
Yay! SlowDive is my favorite from HG. It was love at first sniff!
Happy Friday back atcha! Hope you get to relax this weekend.
Thank you, Jalapeno! I am planning to have a low key weekend. No more decluttering until next weekend!
I did a week of Etat Libre d’Orange, which has only a third- or fourth-hand relationship to the Netherlands, but we work with what we have. Today I’m in Éloge du Traître, which is largely pine and patchouli, a simplified version of Caron Yatagan, but I like it a lot (probably because I never did buy Yatagan, just worked through a big decant). If you don’t make the association that pine = cleaning products, it’s a big, bracing, masculine, outdoorsy thing, appealingly green. Discontinued, of course, as good things too often are — they’re still making Sécretions Magnifiques but they discontinue pleasurable things like this and Je Suis Un Homme? Where’s the justice?
Yatagan is something I would love to smell “in the wild” on someone.
You gotta wonder, do more people buy Sécretions Magnifiques, or do they just feel the need to keep making it for other reasons?
Either people do buy it, which beggars the imagination, or they keep it on the shelf because it’s part of their brand, the most unwearable of all commercial scents. For all we know, they haven’t manufactured a bottle in the last fifteen years.
So true!
SOTD is IA Fox in the Flowerbed. Although the story behind the scent is based in the Austrian Alps, I still selected it due to the tulip note. Very chilly here today so I probably should have went with a fragrance for cooler weather, but I thought this one fit the CP.
Twins!
Yay 😀
Hello and tgif!
Claiming CP points with Viktor & Rolf’s Good Fortune from a miniature that is oh-so-adorable. Smells of Alien-esque solar jasmine and warm, sweet vanilla. I would love to smell the intense Elixir version but nowhere I know carries it.
Trying out Lisa Eldridge’s new skin tint. Being an combo-oily girl, I went serum, NO moisturizer, sunscreen then skin tint and finally powder. Almost 3 hours in and I am already quite shiny around the T-zone. Looks like this is not for me…and the coverage is low–low-medium (I prefer medium and buildable).
Thank you for the Lisa Eldridge review. I liked the lipsticks, but haven’t tried the other products. I don’t mind the price of the products but the tax and shipping and import fees to Canada make this quite expensive. Hate it when i expect one finish, and end up looking shiny.
That V&R Good Fortune bottle looks awesome in photos.
My SOTD is L’artisan Histoires d’Oranger, and I love it. It’s a quiet EDP, and subtle, and really wonderful. I have Escale a Portofino, too, and Neroli Portofino, and each one offers something different. I feel like I smell really nice today.
I feel like you smell really nice today too 🙂
Drew a blank with the CP so I chose Theorema instead. It’s a cool cloudy day outside but it’s better than snow and sub zero temps.
You can never go wrong with Theorema, and it’s a warming orange chypre to boot
Yep, it’s always perfect.
I thunked my Amsterdam decant (The Scents of Departure). Perfect for this CP.
Spot on!
IA Fox in the Flowerbed, both the soap and the perfume. Hello tulips! Hello spring! Supposed to be nearly 20C here today. I’ll take it while we have it.
Perfect my scent twin!
I’m in Ninfeo Mio, which has absolutely nothing to do with the Netherlands, except that I’m wearing it because I’m so glad spring has FINALLY come to New England, and I bet some women in the Netherlands are feeling the same!
Gardens —> flowers —> Netherlands. There you go!
Excellent creative thinking!
I’m wearing Gold by Donna Karan, and apparently Holland hosts “Dutch Lily Days”, a large meeting of lily growers, so I say that works for the community project.
Gold was among my possibilities for today, such a gorgeous scent.
Plus you smell great.
Comete again from a sample.
I left my thoughts on yesterday’s post, but I think many of you will be disappointed because it’s underwhelming and on me, fleeting
Felt the same way, ltsg!
Money saved!
Thanks for the heads up on Comete.
I think Francesca Bianchi is from Amsterdam, so I’m wearing her “Sticky Fingers.”
Happy Friday, everyone.
Such a lovely one, you smell marvellous, Daniel
Thanks. Denise.😊
I had planned to wear Under My Skin for the CP, but for the same reasons very ably described by mrsdarcy above, I’m in Le Galion Iris. Spring in a bottle, and spring has definitely sprung here in the PNW!
Whereas I turned my heat on again this afternoon! Not freezing here, but pretty cold in my stone house.
I’m finishing my ELdO week in Nombril Immense for the name, the patchouli, tout!
I have this bottle thanks to a generous NSTer swap💕Looking forward to the swapmeet tomorrow!
Too bad ELdO discontinued that one.
CP compliant in Hiram Green’s springy Vivacious. Sun’s back out, and am enjoying one of my favorite aspects of this time of year–the yard’s almost fluorescent shade of green.
Sun and green here too, enjoy!🌞
Love it when the grass becomes that electrified green color!
I’m twisting and turning the CP to fit my little collection and looked at this list of the top 20 things the Netherlands are known for:
https://aroundtheworldwithme.com/things-that-the-netherlands-is-known-for/
I went with #6, wooden clogs. I have no idea what kind of wood they’re made of or if people even still wear them. I’m quite sure they aren’t made of sandalwood, but it’s still wood so I’m going with Bois des Iles edt. Feet never smelled so good! 😂
The sun is full force again today with a high of around 60F. It doesn’t get any better. The wind has died down so I think I’ll be able to keep my hat on when we venture out. There are a couple of huge rocks standing on end a la Stonehenge, so that’s were we’ll be headed when breakfast is done. Happy Friday !☀️
Ha! I like it!😂 When I was a kid I had several pairs of Bastad clogs, an homage to my Swedish heritage. I could never wear them now, way too stiff.
Enjoy your day. The pictures you’ve been posting are gorgeous! That sky!🌞 although I will say ours looks just like that today so I am a happy camper.
Also, you smell great!
So happy to hear you are getting some restorative sunshine! It makes a world of difference. 🌞
I love your reasoning there Deva. I think some farmers might still wear clogs, but I suppose they mostly get made for tourists these days. I used to have a pair when I was little and really loved them. They keep your feet surprisingly warm and dry.
I’m picturing tiny kid clogs! So cute!
I’ve found a website that is still selling wooden clogs and apparently they are made of poplar wood.
Thanks! I just looked up poplar wood because I’ve got time on my hands. Seems it’s considered a “hardwood” but is much easier to work with than other hardwoods. It’s used extensively in cabinetry and furniture making. “If you haven’t learned something new each day, you’ve wasted it!” That’s according to dear old mom. 🙃
Thanks for the list of things it’s known for. I had already thought of cheese and painters, but I’m unable to think of any scents related to either. Gouda perfume, anyone? I would also probably list canals, Delft ware, and windmills. Again, no real perfume ideas there. Also, I have been told that the Dutch are the tallest people in the world. Did you know that? Now there’s one good option left: Dutch CHOCOLATE. I’m giving that a ponder. As you can perhaps infer, I am commando so far.
I thought someone might wear Zoologist Cow this week for the dairy link
Yes, chocolate is a good one! I’ve always wondered what dutch processed cocoa meant, now I know. And because I’m too lazy to paraphrase, here’s the summary from Wikipedia:
“The Dutch process was developed in the early 19th century by Dutch chocolate maker Coenraad Johannes van Houten, whose father Casparus was responsible for the development of the method of removing fat from cocoa beans by hydraulic press around 1828, forming the basis for cocoa powder. These developments greatly expanded the use of cocoa, and reduced the oiliness that was previously associated with cocoa.”
Thanks for the link! It was a pretty cool read.
Abel Nurture for the cp. This line was founded in Amsterdam by a New Zealander. So yes, I took points a few weeks ago for the NZ cp too. It’s a twofer!😅
I had my massage first thing this morning and as always, it felt so good. When I flip from face down to face up for the second half of the massage, my therapist always places a warm towel over my forehead and eyes. It is gently scented with an essential oil and every time it’s been scented with a blend containing menthol or eucalyptus. Well today it was scented with jasmine! And mmmm, it smelled so good! I kept taking deep inhales the whole time lol. Now I am craving jasmine scents and I have none. Of course I got on the internet and it looks like A La Nuit is only offered in bell jars. Dang. The old bottles are absurdly priced on the bay. Any other good jasmine recs?
It seems like the “good” jasmine perfumes are either horribly expensive or discontinued. I wish that Sarrasins is part of the export line for less money.
IA Fox in the Flowerbed is a lovely jasmine at a decent price, with a cute bottle. Just my two cents.
I agree and I am wearing it for the tulips today. I must say it is a very nice jasmine though.
Good to know! I’ve not tried any from this line…they do have cute bottles.😉
And they have travel size bottles and nice, 2ml spray samples. I really like the brand.
Lush Lust is a great jasmine scent…not too subtle though.
I forgot about that one! I’ll have to stop into lush soon and re-sniff it.
Also Diptyque Olène.
Another I haven’t tried! Thanks Aurora. I do like most Diptyques.
Rogue Jasmin Antique is a great jasmine.
Ah! Will add to the list.👍
Yes, I like that one too.
What about Samsara? I know it’s not a jasmine soliflore, but I can smell it clearly along with narcissus and sandalwood.
Wow, was going to make a list, and then realized so many of my jasmine favorites are no longer made! Vilhelm Parfumerie Don’t Tell Jasmine is worth a shot.
I’m wearing Vetiver by Goutal for its hints of the seaside. My extremely densely populated country has very little in the way of wide open spaces, except for the sea.
Before my move to Luxembourg I lived in the south western part of the Netherlands, very close to the Oosterschelde. I loved walking along that vast stretch of water, particularly on windy and bad weather days, because there would be so very few people and it would smell of the sea. That salt water smell and the invigorating winds are one of the few things I miss, living in a land locked country.
Have a great weekend everyone!
Have a great weekend, too. I had to look up the meaning of “Polder” yesterday…land reclaimed from the sea.
Polder is such an important word in the Netherlands. It’s also used as a verb: “polderen”(= poldering) which means the (former) Dutch style of governing a country, which means seeking compromises and collaborating.
Interesting, thanks. It’s got a nice sound to it. ( like ponder )
Well, you’ve all jetted off to the Netherlands but I’m in the tropics in Monyette layered over Mountain Ocean coconut lotion. Such was my mood this morning…
Enjoy the tropics Isabella!
Gotta wear the perfume that moves you, CP or not!
I’m wearing PotL Luctor Et Emergo for the CP. It’s really perfect since today is beautiful and sunny but also chilly and windy. Happy Friday everyone!
Love POTL, happy Friday ringthing!
I’m very literal today in Gallivant Amsterdam.
Happy Friday, all!
It’s the last day of my son’s spring break, we plan on making lunch and boba tea from scratch this afternoon. Very chill.
Enjoy the day!
Ooooooooooooh, boba tea! 😋
In VCA’s Orchidee Vanille, and off to meet friends who are scent-agnostic.
LOL at “scent-agnostic”!
For the Dutch royal family, the House of Orange, I am wearing Orange Sanguine (and enjoying it very much). My stupid knee is still sore and I am getting cranky waiting for it to improve. I remember when a day or two was all I needed to recover from pretty much anything. Now my poor aging body needs at least a week for the most minor thing.
Sorry your knee is still painful. No wonder you’re cranky. Could you find a catalogue of car mats to look through, to cheer yourself up? A few hours of escapism in the wonderful world of rubber and hard wearing carpet might be just what you need?
😆 My birthday car mats are holding up beautifully, so I don’t need more, but I have been entertaining the idea of a garage ceiling mounted storage unit https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=DChcSEwjFmOSC686FAxVANK0GHXEcBgYYABAUGgJwdg&gclid=CjwKCAjwrIixBhBbEiwACEqDJeNwh8ipCkDFdau7Gimwf4sxGb-nAQpog8akeoYsiKPdDQO0LT-V7hoCtv4QAvD_BwE&sig=AOD64_1EbvCR6rNEloToOfDl-rzVcn5WDw&ctype=5&q=&ved=2ahUKEwiDodyC686FAxX2GjQIHdgfA1gQ9aACKAB6BAgCEDk&adurl= instead of more perfume. Perhaps I’ll do some comparison shopping…
I can see the attraction. Nothing says glamour more than a metal shelf for weed killer and cable ties.
Garage glamour! It should become a trend.
LOL, you guys!!
https://www.rietveldschroderhuis.nl/en#quote-block-wrapper
I’ve chosen The Rietveld/ Schroder house in Utrecht, commissioned in. 1924 by Truus Schroder, a widow with three children . She wanted a liveable house that met her needs, and particularly liked sitting by the upstairs window looking out at the vast expanse of nature and trees visible through the windows. The house belongs to the De Stijl movement…is very pared back, strong emphasis on form and sculptural ( strong horizontals) but I like the contrast between its minimalism and the quirkiness of the bold primary colours throughout, and the furniture- notably Rietveld’s famous Red Chair. So something simple and austere but also a dash of humour. I started off thinking Jicky could be a good match, for the strength and calm, then SL Gris Clair for the stripped back peacefulness but have gone with SL Vierge de Fer as it has the kink needed on top of the chilliness.
Cool art deco house.
Wow, what a cool house! Ahead of it’s time, I would say. Equally fascinating back story. Thanks for the link.
I was just looking at that house this week (not this website though), and I had never heard of it. Great fragrance match!
Pear, apple and yogurt smoothie
Spent the day in l’Heure Attendue from the héritage collection, a favorite from that Line along with Que sais-je?, Eau de Patou and Vacances, thankful I could get them all, I also have Chaldée which is for summer. Tonight it’s vintage Helena Rubinstein Apple Blossom because there must bé lilacs in the Netherlands surely and they’re in bloom in my street, AB is so true to that note, vintage is the way to go because the modern one from Kent cosmetics is very disappointing, Fragantica comments concur, in fact I had bought my HR one and the Kent cosmetics both at the same time and promptly sent the Kent cosmetics to the charity shop, I had got them very cheaply, and boy, what a difference between the two, it’s the adventure and joy of classic perfumes hunting.
https://www.vincentvangogh.org/lilac-bush.jsp
If it’s good enough for Van Gogh….
😃
Pretty sure that my bottle of L’Heure Attendue is still shrink wrapped.
Delayed gratification😀
Hi all,
Back from visiting my sister and rest of family.
Had perfect weather everyday.
And it was a wonderful visit with everyone.
Got to see my dad’s grave and we decided to have a picture of our parents on their wedding day in 1949 put on the vault. (even though my mother isn’t there, she chose to be cremated)
There was golf club for youngest grandaughter and prom for eldest grandaughter and a big sephora run for the girls.
All in all, nice, nice.
In Volutes EDT today.
What a lovely idea for your father’s grave.
So glad you had a nice time.
Sounds like a great visit!
Welcome back! It sounds like your trip was exactly what you needed.
My pick is Chiaroscuro by Roxana Illuminated Perfume, for the Dutch painters’ vibes. It definitely lives up to its name with the light and shadow play of different sunny accents, including jasmine sambac and myrtle, and dark ones like earthy and full on patchouli, and it has a great jatamansi /spikenard note, one of my perennial favorites.
That sounds so nice!
Happy Friday!
I’m CP compliant in Puredistance no. 12.
Puredistance is a Dutch brand (founded in 2002 by Jan Ewoud Vos) which makes a few of my all time favorite perfumes such as Opardu, no. 12 and Antonia.
I’m glad you wore Puredistance as I did not remember that it is a Dutch brand! You smell wonderful!
Thank you H! 😊
I have a sample or two from Puredistance. I could have worn that today!
I ended up choosing Ostara for the daffodils in the Netherlands for today. I’ve also finally decided to put my back up bottle up for swap tomorrow after considering it for the last year+. Ostara is so strong that I only need 1 or 2 sprays that last almost all day. I think that means my 50ml bottle will last me a very long time. I also snagged a bottle of Amaranthine last year, which I find similar to Ostara.
Hope everyonen is having a nice Friday!
Amaranthine is gorgeous!
Yes, it is!
My city and surrounding areas are rich in Dutch history. We have a huge festival nearby, and other events throughout the year. I decided to match the wooden shoe with Samsara for wood. I have some better matches but I really wanted to wear Samsara this morning.
I am wishing everyone a happy weekend!🌞
Enjoy your Samsara.
I support this logic, lillyjo
Samsara never disappoints me. You smell wonderful.
Have a great weekend too!
I’ve been craving Samsara, might wear it this weekend.
Samsara is a great choice, no matter what!
I know little about the Netherlands and, despite Kanuka’s helpful list early this week, I thought I’d have to skip this one. But I looked up ‘tulip’ as a scent note and was surprised that I have 3 fragrances with this note. So my SOTD is EL Pure White Linen layered over BBW’s Paris Amour body products, both of which have a tulip note, so I can play! The combo is lovely together and perfect for a spring day blessed with lots of ☀️ 🌞 and what seems like every tree and shrub in my town is blooming white, pink and purple. Mr. Laila went crazy last fall planting bulbs and we have a huge array of numerous varieties of daffodils, tulips (none of which have a fragrance!) and more blooming away. Gorgeous!
A busy day thus far, morning yoga class followed by trips to Aldi, PetSmart and a few other errands, happy to be home now for the remainder of the weekend. Weather looks chilly but otherwise sunny, hoping to plant early spring veggies this weekend. 👩🌾 Our double trip to Indy was fun but exhausting – anyone looking for high-end and delicious dining there, I highly recommend Oceanside for seafood and Vida for American contemporary. 🍽️ The Andrea Bocelli concert 🎵 was fantastic – he is, in my eyes, incredibly talented, but the surprise was his several guest musicians, vocalists and dancers were so talented if they had their own show w/o Bocelli it would be awesome as well.
Happy Friday to all, and Happy Weekend ahead! 🌷💐🌷💐
Correction: it’s Oceanaire restaurant in Indianapolis, not Oceanside (computer changed it twice on me!)
Thanks, Laila, for this mention! I am in the general vicinity, and always looking for something to motivate me to make the trip. Glad you enjoyed the concert. My Mother grew up there, and she said that, back her day, with Indy being a railroad hub, they always got lots of the big music stars and theatre tours passing through! Get those veggies in the ground: I’ve got peas and lettuce lookin’ good.
We had limited time there but our impression was Indy has a lot to offer and we just had a glimpse. I forgot to mention the Eiteljorg Museum, which specializes in the art and history of Native America and the West. As an admirer of Native American cultures, I enjoyed it tremendously.
Were you near the convention center in downtown Indy, by chance?
Yes, stayed at the Marriott just a couple blocks away, we could walk to everything we wanted to see.
I know exactly where that Marriott is!
It was a good place to stay. Now that he’s retired, Mr. Laila lucked into a (very) part-time job as a desk clerk at Marriott. At the most, he works 1 day per week, sometimes he doesn’t work for several weeks in a row. In return, he gets a sizable employee discount at rooms at any of the hotels in the Marriott chain – Marriott, Residence Inn, Fairfield Inn, etc. Given the cost of concert tix for Chicago concerts, it’ often costs less for us to go to a concert in a neighboring city and stay overnight than it would for the concert alone in the Chicago market. We saw Peter Gabriel in Milwaukee and stayed at a nice hotel on the Riverwalk only a block away for considerably less than seeing him here. Same for Bocelli.
I’m generalising from tulips to flowers in general, so my post-shower perfume will be Scherrer 2. There is a lot of different flowers packed in there.
Good enough!
Thanks to whoever mentioned this yesterday, I am CP compliant in soiye of myself in Mona di Orio Violette fumée. I also wore this on W, not know that the house is based in the Netherlands.
This is yet another fragrance from my TPC anise sampler in which I cannot detect anise. I believe I had a tiny bottle of this from an NST split some years back and was besotted with it. I like it very much now but am not compelled to get more.
You smell lovely!
SOTD is Hiram Green’s Arbole. It is one of the only fragrances I ordered immediately after trying a sample.
Nice!
For the CP win, I’m taking a cue from Glannys’ association with Van Cleef & Arpels in lovely Moonlight Patchouli. I picked this up while doing the FragranceNet “perfume of the month.” MP plays very nicely on me. I am sadly realizing that patchouli usually smells better on other people than on me! Boo! But I love it so much. In other news, the article on Fragrantica about Frederic Malle leaving Editions de Parfum has lots of people sneering at my dear Estee Lauder, Inc. But their patchouli scents are very wearable to me, for one example. And M. Malle can go do more great stuff and more power to him.
People just don’t like it when niche brands get bought by conglomerates…I can’t think of a time when it was cheered by anybody. But I totally get after spending 25 years on your brand, wanting to know it will outlive you, and that you won’t spend your golden years with it wrapped around your neck 🙂
I am having Dutch weather here today, cold wet and windy, but my bottle of POTL is in San Diego so I’m in SDV layered with Bois d’Arménie for warmth. It’s supposed to drop to -6C by Sunday night, typical spring rollercoaster.
That does sound like a cozy combo!
SOTD = Guerlain Habit Rouge Dress Code 2015
Very nice!

Today’s news, courtesy of the Wall Street Journal, has to do with “consumer-obsessed” approach (in Clorox’ terms) in developing new products. I have to say that I am quite curious about the toilet foaming bomb.

Funky owl mascot for you today! 🦉
Another yucky weather day here. The dreaded “wintry mix” made an appearance this afternoon, as did a breeze. I just went outside to grab mail and that was it.
My arm is still sore from yesterday’s shingle shot. That’s been about it for side effects. That, and I was yawning a lot last night before I went to bed. Not bad at all.
SOTD = Byredo La Tulipe, from The Sample Stash. Went with the first thing I associate with The Netherlands, which is tulips. 🌷🌷🌷
Glad your side effects were minimal. That first dose is usually a doozy, but nothing compared to actually having shingles. Hope you get some sun soon!
I had a friend tell me he had had shingles sometime in the past 10 years or so, and that it was one of the worst things he had experienced. That story was a healthy push against my fear of needles.
Got another day of horrid weather on tap, and then the Daystar should return on Sunday. It’s snowing now…
I just realized today that I have your old address. I am guessing your email is the same, but can you email your new address to me please?
Sure!
Thanks 😊
Wow, that really isn’t bad. I was utterly wiped out.
I had the chickenpox when I was 14. It sucked big-time, then. But I am wondering now if that could be part of why I am not noticing much with the shingles vax.
I don’t know, but I had chickenpox too…
I give Kanuka credit for her nice list of connections to the Netherlands, or I may have skipped the CP.
Wearing MFK Gentle Fluidity Silver because of the juniper/gin connection. This one is a perfume equivalent of gin and tonic to me.
Here in Texas, I am surrounding by juniper (mountain cedar) and I love them even though I am allergic to the pollen. I like to crush the berries between my fingers. Unfortunately, you can’t make gin from this variety of juniper berry.
Oh excellent!
