DS & Durga Gateau Blackout ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 19 April 2024 18 Comments

Indie brand DS & Durga has launched Gateau Blackout, a new limited edition fragrance.

From the ashy pines of dark times, the fruit of friendship flowers like a hunk of Black Forest cake.

The notes include black cherry, snow pine, incense, cocoa, jasmine, orris, vanilla, friend’s musk and fireplace.

DS & Durga Gateau Blackout is available in 50 ml Eau de Parfum, $210.

This sounds kind of good to me, but what is “friend’s musk”?

The musk worn by your friend?

I thought it was the musk OF your friend. I had mixed feelings about that.

That’s what I thought, with mixed feelings also.

I’m sticking with that impression. It’s ridiculous, but also makes me think of how you can pick up a close friend’s sweater, sniff it, and know for certain that it’s theirs.

What Deva said. When I visited the boutique back in 2018/2019, there was barely enough room for their collection back then and now, it seems that every month or so there’s a new scent. No bueno.

Too lazy to count! They are busy bees over there.

If you believe Basenotes, this is their fourth for the year, or one every four weeks or so, and last year they did eight, one every six and a half weeks, so they’re ramping up.

I’m so old-fashioned that more than two or three a year seems like a lot: eight to twelve in a year is ridiculous, and that’s not even close to the high end — Guerlain did 21 last year and has released at least 8 so far this year, with more on the immediate horizon.

Ok, that seemed too low, so you made me count. I list 5 since 1/1, but I thought it was even more than that so there you go. One (Cowgirl Grass) is a new version of an old fragrance, if that helps.

Friend’s musk, a musk borrowed from a friend and have to return? Lol
I smelled Amber Kiso yesterday and liked it. And I do like Black Forest Cake.

I just opened today’s email from D.S. & Durga to see they created this perfume for Joe Talbot, singer of the band Idles. (I love this band, have seen them live before and will again in a few weeks). Looks like it was created via a new show the perfumer is launching called Perfume Quest, which is “about making perfume for interesting people.”

Here’s a link to the show, which is 34 minutes long. I’ll watch it later after work.
