Tuesday scent of the day 4/16

Posted by Robin on 16 April 2024 133 Comments

It's Tuesday, National Librarian Day, World Voice Day and Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day. Birthdays: Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Anatole France, Charlie Chaplin, Kingsley Amis, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm commando for a morning exercise class; I'll pick something this afternoon. Tea at the moment is Art of Tea Tali's Masala Chai, with an extra sprinkle of nutmeg.

Reminder: on 4/19, we're off to the Netherlands (aka Holland)! (Friday is Dutch-American Friendship Day.) Wear a perfume that is named for a place in the Netherlands, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to the Netherlands, or that features a local ingredient, or ?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Tulip Teapot from the Sharing Moments collection by Janny van der Heijden is €70 at Heinen Delfts Blauw.

What a beautiful image-I love blue and white china.

I’m in Hermes Pamplemousse Rose – I love colognes. I know I’ve said it before but they just make me feel so uplifted. I try and get some in my hair so I can enjoy the smell all day.

I don’t usually stop for coffee in the morning but today I did and ran into a friend I haven’t seen in awhile, and he’s doing really well. Really put a smile on my face.

also happy National Librarians Day-I love libraries and the people who work there. I remember getting my first library card, and reading Little Women. I think I was 7. My next book was The comedians by Graham Greene, and I didn’t get the humor in it at all lol.

Stay away from that website then…too much blue & white china to resist 🙂

I wish I could remember my first library book! The library was a very magical place to me as a child. Still is really.

In Gallivant Amsterdam for the CP. I forgot about this decant and found it last night, half evaporated. It’s time to use it and finish it quickly.

Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day! I wish I could, especially today, that I am struggling to keep my eyes open. Instead, coffee to the rescue! Another beautiful, warm, sunny day. The last one this week. The temps will drop to the 40s, and rain is in the forecast. At least tulips and cherry trees are in full blossom, which is very cheerful!

    Happy Tuesday! 🌷🌸

Wearing Un Coeur en Mai and remembering my visit to Keukenhof, the Netherlands (in late April – early May, if I remember correctly). While this scent does not have tulip, narcissus or hyacinth in it, it lives up to the name and conjures the image of the sea of flowers in Keukenhof around this time.

Last week I took part in LocJAM – a game translation marathon, as described by the organizers. I translated a very short retro point-and-click adventure game about time-travelling. I think the developers were inspired by Back to Future series, although this game was much simpler and shorter.

Overall, a fun experience, although I would have liked more team work – I did at least 90% of translation, while my partner did the technical part – sprite editing, testing, uploading. I do not blame them though – life happens, and our team was formed at the last moment. And their part was important too.

Oh, and finally a game with my name in the credits. Even though it is a free indie game. 😆

ELdO day two: Jasmin et Cigarette, which is sort of indefinable: jasmine, sure, but it doesn’t smell like a pack of cigarettes or a lit cigarette or even ash, exactly. It’s hard to say what it does smell like, and it’s mercilessly linear, no development at all for the duration. It’s sort of a placeholder scent, something that’ll do until a more interesting scent comes along. Some people love it! I’m just not one of those people.

    Hello.
Sotd is Zara Blanc Ensoleille. Sunscreen, coconut and sea breeze. Bronze Goddess’ younger sister but she opted for the parasol so she’s less “sweaty” than her older sibling.
Someone’s coming to fix my light switch because there was a tiny “explosion” when I flipped it. Sparks and a flash of electricity along with a loud pop, then half the house went dark. Thankfully the aircon still works so I can survive.

SOTM is Rebecca Minkoff. Two more days until my laundry room is almost fully restored! It has been usable for the last couple of weeks, but it has no lights and half of the cabinets need to be reinstalled, and the floor is just the new sub-flooring. Thankfully there are two big windows for light, and I’ve had rugs and a beach towel on the flooring so my socks don’t get all dusty. Electricians next week — small but very significant steps!

Very sleepless night thanks to a local Taco Bell 🤢 but I think things are mostly back to normal now.

I know I have a decant of the latest Hiram Green (is he the one mentioned here as being linked to the Netherlands?) but I can’t find it so I’m going with BK Angel’s Share from my travel size.

Beautiful sunny day here. We had a gorgeous drive leaving Oregon yesterday. I think I maybe passed 4-5 ranch trucks and a couple of cars until I got into Nevada. Lots of cows and horses, it’s free range and the cattle were all over. I slowed down a lot as they came into proximity because there’s lots of new babies who don’t understand the road can kill you. Plus, they startle easily and dart quickly, so you never know if they’re going to jump right in your path. I do miss the juniper laden air of that last campground, though. It was the MOST juniper-ry smelling spot I’ve ever been to. The entire area is filled with old and new juniper, and while indigenous, they are mostly considered pest tree now because they have expanded their range considerably due to poor forestry practices. They are water hogs and many other native flora are choked out because of them. The forest service it actually digging them up and removing them in certain areas. I wouldn’t mind a juniper heavy perfume…

I like Orchidivy quite a bit. It’s very green in the opening but that fades out fairly quickly to the other notes. I like how PG does vanilla and there’s plenty of that in the dry down. 🙂

I am wafting Rose & Cuir today. I get far more green/plant notes than leather ones from this. It feels very spring-y to match the weather.

Tea today is Double Bergamot Earl Gray from The Head Nut in Philly. I prefer the Earl Grays from Clipper Ship and F&M, but this one does just fine as a London Fog.

My 16-month-old niece has learned the word “stinky” and is now using it for strong smells, not necessarily bad smells. I’m just waiting for her to call me stinky when I see her this weekend. And my sister will 100% howl with laughter when it happens. 😂

I’m in Ode to Dullness from JHAG which I really like despite the name. It’s a nice background, or wallpaper scent, on days when that’s what I’m looking for. I also like that this brand makes travel size sprays.
It cooled off nicely overnight and was perfect sleeping weather. I love these cool spring mornings that give the promise the summer is on the way, whereas the same cool morning in fall would give the forewarning that winter was on the way. It’s all about perspective I guess!

I’m going to match Dutch paintings with perfume. From the 1600s peeled lemons became a popular motif in still life paintings, symbolic of wealth but also showing the availability of the fruit from the Mediterranean. Matching with SL Fleurs de Citronnier

A great idea! I was thinking last night that when I think of arts where the Dutch have left their mark, surely it has to be painting.
I don’t know whether you are familiar with Jan Weissenbruch, Anton Mauve or Hendrik Willem Mesdag?

I went with Angel’s Dust by Francesca Bianchi today for the cp. I’m doing a week of perfume brands based in the Netherlands except I’ll also wear Stroopwaffel this week, which was created by Ineke for Scent Trunk and is inspired by the Netherlands.

And I’m excited for the swap meet this weekend! I just went to an in person clothing swap this past weekend (my first!) at someone’s house so it’s really swapapalooza for me lately.

I had appointments this morning so I behaved myself, but now I am wafting Oud Bouquet. With luck it will be more sedate by the time I meet a friend later for happy hour.

I polished off a tiny decant of Nishane A Hundred Silent Ways and I don’t need any more. I bought a percussive massage gun to use on my joints after running (well, jogging) and I have somehow messed up my right knee. I used the lowest setting and thought it was not ever concentrated on one spot, but ouch! I have irritated the tendons/ligaments. So I am back to walking only and hoping active rest makes it better, and I will be much more careful with the massager.

I’m trying to imagine using one of those things on a joint area..😅 Pretty sure those are for deep tissue massages only. I’m sending blessings to your poor knee although I’m as far from “holy” as you can get!

SOTD = Prada Infusion de Gingembre

Spicy ginger 🫚 but did not last long. I am so glad I started with travel sprays because this is the 2nd of 3 I got at Sephora that was just so so.

Today, the Wall Street Journal had an article on how to extricate yourself (for the most part), from an over-talker. In summary:

    1) provide excuses, as in “I’m getting a drink. Can I get one for you.” Of course you can ditch the person as you’re at the bar.

    2) be kind – sometimes people just need to unload themselves for a very legit reason

    3) make a game of it – “how about those (name of team)?”

    4) try to pull someone else in – preferably someone you don’t really like that well

    5) it’s ok to flee if all else fails

I’m a fan of #5 and #4, then #1. Ugh, overtalkers. I have to deal with SO many of them as most of the people we see socially are performers or academics who work / have worked with Mr. Ockeghem. They view me as a weird curiosity who does boring work (some business thing) and studied a boring subject (medieval history) in when I was in a humanities grad program. Honestly, I’d much rather stand in a corner and nurse my drink alone than listen to them go on ad nauseam about their perceived slights in the small performance/academic community here.

SOTD = commando, except for The Body Shoppe British Rose body butter on my shins. The pollen counts have been ridiculously high here lately, so I figured I’d see if skipping perfume would help with the sneezing.

My unit does have its own HVAC.

But when my apartment was inspected back in March, maintenance discovered that the A/C wasn’t working correctly. They said they were going to put in a work order and try to get it fixed before the hot weather shows up.

Since my apartment is on the top floor, I collect everyone’s heat. It’s a nice feature in Winter during a subzero cold snap. Not so much in warmer weather.

Late today — lots going on. SOTD was a spring thing, at least: Tauerville Hyacinth and a Mechanic. I didn’t see any hyacinths being grown or sold when I was in the Netherlands, but I’m sure people grow them there in their normal gardens. Off to my woodworking class soon, while Mr. Ockeghem fills in for me talking to new parents in my kid’s mini school and then goes to Ockeghem Teen’s third concert in a week.

We are making a box with a recessed bottom and hinged lid with a dark wood stripe down the middle. I seem to be doing quite well so far; there’s one person who’s kinda clueless but the other five of us seem to be getting on quite well.
