Tuesday scent of the day 3/19

Posted by Robin on 19 March 2024 211 Comments

It's Tuesday, and the Vernal Equinox is upon us (tonight at 11:06 if you're on the East Coast of the US, early tomorrow if you're in London, tomorrow afternoon if you're in Sydney).

I am commando for a morning exercise class; my plan when I return is L’Artisan Parfumeur Jacinthe des Bois (although the weather certainly does not call for it). Tea at the moment is Cascadia Breakfast from The Jasmine Pearl Tea Co brewed with some cacao husk & crumbled cinnamon bark.

Reminder: on 3/22, it's spring! Wear a spring floral, or any fragrance that says spring to you (if you're in the southern hemisphere, adjust accordingly.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Fiore Teapot With Infuser Sakura ("With its enchanting first blooms of spring, the Sakura Fiore Collection recollects a time for rejuvenation and renewal, building on our ever-popular cherry blossom design with red and pink blossoms that awaken the senses...this 24-ounce teapot includes a stainless-steel infuser basket for steeping your favorite loose tea blends") is on mark down, $27 at Tea Forte.

Welcoming Spring in Jo Malone Mimosa & Cardamom.

We are having a very cold and windy day. It is feeling in the mid-20s right now. But I am very happy Spring has officially arrived!
    Happy Tuesday! 🪻🌷🌻🌞

What a sweet teapot at a sweet price!
It’s cold here but the sun is shining. I have young friends coming over for movie day so I am wearing Cashmere Mist as a light choice. It’s really pretty.
My knee surgery last week was uneventful and recovery is coming along fine. This procedure has changed so much since my other knee replacement in 2013 so that everything is easier, and it’s certainly much better than my horrible foot & ankle surgery in ’21 where I couldn’t put any weight on my foot for 6 weeks. So things are good! I have missed NST and haven’t read comments to catch up yet, hope everyone is doing well.

So glad spring is here-feels like I’ve been driving in bad conditions for 99 months or so.

Wearing FM Cologne Indelible, on top of Neroli Portofino Shower gel and body oil. I love colognes. Dreaming about Neroli Dore, too, and Vierge de Fer-a scent I associate as a freshie for summer. Bring on all the good weather!

I very often have some random song stuck in my head, but not usually when I first wake up — most often it’s a reaction to some external stimulus. For instance, this morning Mr. G happened to say “let’s make some money” so now, of course, I have the Pet Shop Boys in my head singing “I’ve got the brains, you’ve got the looks …” etc. 😂

Okay, so that teapot is gorgeous, and so is the price! I’ve been drinking coffee instead of tea for the past few weeks, so it’s folgers Mardi Gras blend this morning.

I’m in Sur le Nil this morning, from a swap with a sweetheart of an NSTer. I’m headed to a drum drum circle tonight to celebrate the spring equinox, and can’t wait. It’s across town, but I’m carpooling, so it’ll be fun little mini trip! Probably 20+ people will be there, so I’m really pumped. 🪘 🤩

Spring greenery day 2: Demeter Grass, which doesn’t smell as much like a freshly mown lawn as I’d like, but is still pleasantly bright-green. (What I really want it to be was the original eighties Gap Grass, unparalleled for its evocation of grass, but we’ll never have that again.)

Wearing Mitsouko edp layered over jasmine sandalwood lotion. So happy to see spring arrive, time for this little birdie to fly away north! My wisteria is going wild, it will be great for our annual pyppy photo on Sunday. I always take a picture of myself with the dog in front of the wisteria to document the passage of time.

OK, so not because of the controversies surrounding royal pictures but I am curious. Would you spend the time editing photos regardless of whether or not you think they will be published? A friend of mine (the lawyer I mentioned here previously whom I think had a TBI) had entered photography competitions. I have no clue if he ever won or placed but I was gobsmacked when he mentioned editing the photos he had submitted for the contests! For some reason, I always thought that the photos are warts and all.

In prep for going to Africa a couple of years ago, I took a lesson with a professional outdoor photographer here in town. And post-production / editing is a big part of it, yes, even for my safari photos. Pretty much all professionals (and amateurs like Mr. Ockeghem) do some work on their photos — think of it like darkroom work for film. You can change the colour balance, change to black & white, punch up the colour in a part of the photo where you want to draw the eye, deal with under / overexposure (though as I recall it’s much harder to deal with overexposure), and crop to improve the balance / movement in the photo. I had a photo of baby ducks that I took from a ways back, and had a lot of the surroundings in it; when we worked on editing in the lesson, the photographer cropped it to just the baby’s heads, and it really improved the photo.

Where the ethics start to get dicey, I believe, is when people start moving things around, removing things, etc. (though we did smooth out some small distractions when I was editing in my lesson). I think it’s probably more accepted in art photography (and definitely in commercial / beauty), but in journalism I believe you’re not supposed to move / remove anything.

Pete Souza (photographer for Obama and Reagan) had a good IG post on this difference recently. He posted a photo of Obama meeting Prince George in 2016. “The digital file was ‘processed’ with Photoshop, a software program…that virtually every professional photographer uses. Yet my photograph was certainly not ‘altered’ or ‘changed’ in content….What’s not acceptable is to remove, add, or change elements in the photograph. That would be altering the context.”

Anyway, that said, I don’t generally do a ton of work on my own photos — except for the safari ones, or the occasional decent shot I get. Mr. Ockeghem does, though — he doesn’t publish his photos or enter contests, but photography is one of his hobbies.

Yep. It’s fine to edit your family’s holiday card picture to put in a better smile for one person, edit out a distracting detail, etc. But when your family picture is going to the media, it’s a different ballgame.

Another lovely teapot! $27 includes the stainless steeper?! I may forgo coffee for tea someday…Nah, who am I kidding? I’ll never go up coffee. ☕️

We made our way down to Oregon yesterday. Once again I was confronted with my nemesis- the Astoria-Megler bridge. Lots of positive self talk as I approached and went over but it was especially weird yesterday. The mist/fog/marine layer was so thick I couldn’t see more than 3 car lengths ahead of me. Couldn’t see the bridge, the drop, the water, the other side, nothing. It was like being ratcheted up a roller coaster incline through a thick cloud bank. If it wasn’t for gravity keeping my behind on the seat and my truck on the bridge I’d have no idea if I was going up, down, or sideways. Complete loss of proprioception. One of the most uncomfortable bridge crossings ever for me. 😅

Wearing Tauer’s Au Coeur du Desert today. Such a lovely perfume. My little 5ml cobalt bottle is still going strong. Doubt the sun will manage to burn off the heavy marine layer I’m under but the temps are nice and we’ll be hitting the beach soon. 🌊

I’m going to go with Iris Doux against Iris Nazarena today, for spring and to see which one goes higher on my buy list. Iris Doux was just mentioned in Persolaise’s spring perfumes post, so definitely on point for the CP. First, though, I’ve got to get a workout in.

Another sunny, warm(ish) day here, probably the last we’ll have for a while. So I’ll greet spring, and then head to go skiing tomorrow. 🙂

I think Iris Doux. Overall I really like the creaminess with the iris…it’s prettier than Iris Nazarena, which isn’t always a recommendation, but it works here because it’s not overdone. There’s one period in the drydown when Iris Doux is too sweet / vanilla-focused for me and Iris Nazarena is just right, but then a bit later the iris in Iris Doux comes out more again.

When I compare Iris Nazarena to Iris Doux, Nazarena comes out as much closer to Iris Silver Mist, which I already have. It’s definitely the more academic, rooty version, which I do love. But I really enjoy the more rounded version in Iris Doux. This is sad for my wallet, though. (Never thought I’d say that…Iris Nazarena isn’t exactly cheap, but Iris Doux is more, especially when the Puente site shows it to me in Canadian dollars.)

I’m wearing Gabrielle . I’ve been reading Pilgrim’s Progress this week for no real reason, found it in an Op Shop . I recall reading it at university but it is even odder than I remember and I have got quite caught up in it. It’s interesting to re-read books at an older age, when they are less a chore ( because not ‘required reading’) . I might read The Scarlet Letter next, just for fun.

Wearing Chanel Bois des Iles today, since it isn’t quite warm yet and the gingerbread feels comfy and warm.

I’ve been enjoying Marc Jacobs Daisy Wild, it sort of reminds me of the original Marc Jacovs perfume but with the addition of banana leaf and a bit more sweetness. The OG MJ was the first designer perfume I bought when i was 19. I also had the original Lolita Lempicka. Good times!

Remembering first perfumes, I had a couple from the Body Shop I loved. Oceana was my top favorite. I had Elizabeth Arden Sunflowers and Coty Vanilla Fields (i copied my friend on this one). I think i also had an issey miyake l’eau d’issey as a teenager, or something that smelled just like it. And of course Exclamation when i was a kid, lol.

They really got the clean musks right too – nothing industrial or nose-air singing. The neroli floats over it all like an irridescent soap bubble.

I chose Liz Earle No 9 today, it’s a berry chypre if there is such a thing, it’s the best of the line along with No 1 but it’s been discontinued and prices have been creeping up. I have a third of a bottle, it only comes in 50ml and a bub, so I’m not worried or looking to buy but feel sorry for people who love it and no longer have any to pay £90 or £100. Tonight it’s Kenzo Amour le Parfum plus a few spray of YR Rose Absolue.

Yes, it looks like spring but feels like winter. This week I’m testing a few Meo Fuscioni samples I’ve had kicking around for awhile. First up is Spiritu, which sounded promising. Many favorite notes: Angelica, chamomile, vetiver, guaiac wood…but it started out barbershop on me, and the middle are a bit muddled. It’s a pass.

I was inspired by the cherry blossom trees that have burst into bloom here so I’m in Sakura by Olympic Orchids.

I had such a delightful walk yesterday after work. My partner came with me, and we walked to a great park in the neighborhood. Just minutes after I said to him that I was due for another bald eagle sighting, one flew over us! I saw it perch at the top of the tallest nearby tree so we spent some time walking around finding the best spot to view it. Just as we were about to move on with our walk, a man came up to us and asked how we’d spotted the eagle. We chatted for a minute, then I asked him how he spotted it. He said it’s because he saw us looking up there for so long. 😃 It was a beautiful evening in the 60s, and I’m glad I manifested that eagle sighting hehe. Supposed to drop back to the low 50s after today.

When I was in 6th grade I did my final presentation on The Bald Eagle. I would love to still have my poster board.

I bet that was a fun and great presentation. I wish I hadn’t misplaced a book I made about my grandpa’s life when I was in middle school.

The teapot pic up in the header reminds me that Robin gets an enabler pin from me. I purchased something from Musubi Kiln recently, and have been very impressed/pleased with their service and their products. Highly recommend them! 😁

Really bad headache today, so no perfume. Not even scented lotion. 🤕

I purchased 3 sake cups. One has Maneki Nekko (aka Lucky Cats) all over it, and the other 2 are Sakayuki style with a gorgeous crystalline glaze.

It unseasonably cool here. But I am happy with the cool weather because I know the relentless slide into unbearable heat will start soon enough. That’s why I love fall – I know I made it through summer. Seriously, each winter/spring we have to assess the damage on which plants and even trees didn’t make it.

I am wearing Bvlgari Black to enjoy the cool. This is really one of the unusual perfumes I have, like a vanilla tire. I would wear it more if it weren’t a little too much in the heat.

Cold and windy here, but the sun made a brief appearance.
Thanks to a generous nster I am wearing a dab of Eau de Givenchy. It’s so perfect for spring.
I saw a video by Dacob that Chanel is planning on discontinuing the 15ml exlclusif extraits. I am not sure if that is true, just thought I would mention it.

Not yet spring then but soon, winter is receding. Eau de Givenchy is lovely, you smell great if we have the same one, it has no citrus but is still fresh because of its spring floral notes.

I don’t get citrus. It’s all bright happy floral. I think mine is a 90’s version. Before it was put in the similar bottles. It’s a mini.

Yes, we have the same version, it has a blue box and a dark blue cap.

Well I should take it back Fragrantica lists citrus but somehow they’re muted to me.

En Passant for spring today. And it was a very nice springy day. I thoroughly enjoyed my walk and my errands — anything to be outside in the sunshine.

SOTD was Jean Louis Scherrer, the first one, and that one reaches right out of the vintage bottle and smacks you in the face with fierce bitter greens, especially galbanum, then leather and costus and maybe a bit of rose and iris to soften it up but not by much and sweetness has no home here. This to me is the one green leather chypre to rule them, to bind them. At different times it smells to me like Vent Vert, EL Private Collection, Ma Griffe, No. 19, Silences, AG Heure Exquise. Welcome Spring, the cold bitter snarly windy northern spring of tightly furled green buds barely peeping out from dead brown branches, right before everything explodes. Well, JL Scherrer is the spring explosion that marinated all winter in a leather bottle.
