It's Tuesday and the World Day of Social Justice. Birthdays: Louis Kahn, Ansel Adams, Gloria Vanderbilt, Robert Altman, Sidney Poitier, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Kurt Cobain. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Parfum d'Empire Corsica Furiosa. It might work for an imaginary trip to New Zealand? Tea at the moment is High Mountain Oolong from Ten Ren.
Reminder: on 2/23, we're off to New Zealand! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in New Zealand, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to New Zealand, or that features a local ingredient, or ?
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the Round Tea Pot - Medium from New Zealand's Steiner Ceramics appears to be out of stock, but you can find the small version at Percent Store, and a similar version decorated with a Pohutukawa tree motif at Shop New Zealand.
Hello.
Sotd is Lush Goddess. It’s a very easy oud with a bright citrusy opening.
So many people around me have caught the bug and I am so scared I’ll catch it too. I just recovered from one for about 2 weeks, too soon for another! Stay healthy everybody! š
Wouldnāt you be immune to it unless itās a different strain?
Fingers crossed for you! My son tested positive for covid on Saturday and I don’t have it yet…
Salvador DalƬ. No reason other than that the bottle caught my eye (and it sure is an eye-catching bottle). It’s been a favourite of mine for decades.
I love that first “lips’ fragrance too. The one in the frosty bottle. A beautiful floral chypre.
You smell wonderful, that nose & lips bottle is a favorite.
I’m wearing Gris Clair today, but I’m not a fan of lavender, so I’m not particularly enjoying it. I like the teapot.
The teapot is such a great shape!
I did not love GC either.
I might be CP compliant. Does New Zealand have oak trees? Because I smell like an oak tree with a beehive at the top that a large bear just climbed up and swiped and left honey drizzling down the trunk. Which is a long-winded way of saying I’m wearing SL Chene today, from a large decant received in the last Swapmeet (thank you swapper!).
Kanuka provided a great list of New Zealand possibilities in the first comment thread yesterday. Oaks were included š
oh that’s right. It was a great list.
Chene is lovely! And there’s a huge valley oak with a honeybee hive in the top of the trunk across the street from me — now I want to climb it and take a big sniff!
ooh, how wonderful!
I think it was really common for settlers to bring acorns with them, and you quite often find avenues of oaks as war memorials. Acorns given by Queen Victoria were also planted, but my favourite is the one planted by Ernest Shackleton in the early 1900s before going to the Antarctic which is still going strong ( and producing more acorns).
The native NZ an oak is called Titoki.

How wonderful to read all these fascinating facts about NZ, thank you Kanuka. I have long wanted to visit. A NZ author whose book has haunted me is Keri Hulme’s The Bone People. It won the Booker years ago.

Had anyone tried the Legacy EstƩe Lauder perfumes yet?
I got the sample set. They are very nicely done. I like Azuree except for the cumin note. Inwas disappointed in Estee. splendid was interesting. I loved the White Linen. Private collection was very green.
Nice! Didnāt know there was a sample set. I like cumin so maybe I would like Azuree
I gave the sample to my daughter. She loves it!
False spring here and boy am I enjoying the sunshine!
Today feels like a chypre, woke up craving bitter green, so I chose Paloma Picasso. Silences was also in the running, maybe tomorrow.
I endorse Silences. It was also on my shortlist for the day, but I ended up going with original Murasaki.
I’m wearing Black Orchid this morning and unfortunately the heat is off at work right now š„¶. Something must have happened during our duct cleaning over the weekend, I hope they fix it soon.
š„¶
I almost grabbed Black Orchid today. I know you smell good!
I’m in a few drops from a sample of Smell Bent Prairie Nymph that I believe one of you lovely people sent me once upon a time and that I’ve only just gotten around to trying, and woe, alas, I love it, and it seems to not exist anymore? I suppose it’s pretty close to Slowdive, which I have a full bottle of, but the spicy carnation makes it so yummy.
I don’t know if it’s the weather or my mood or what, but I’m finding that lately a lot of fragrances that I love feel just a bit too ‘shrill’ on me. So I’ve really been enjoying the melt-into-my skin scents, of which Prairie Nymph is one, along with Imogen Rose (but no other roses — right now they all have edges), Cuir de Gardenia, Bronze Goddess, and Rahat Loukoum. There’s a common thread in all of these — they’re warm and soft, don’t have bright or bracing top notes, and they have something of the natural scent of my skin about them. Analagous to the perfect my-lips-but-better tinted lip balm. š
You smell great! I am kicking myself for not getting a FB of Prairie Nymph before Smell Bent closed up shop.
Oh, what a shame! Yes, Smell Bent is no more.
Have you ever tried Lush Rose Jam? To me itās similar in that dense, sweet rose rather than prickly rose
Yes, I love Rose Jam as a shower gel, but found that the perfume version was too sweet for me.
You might want to try the new Hiram Green Philtre, it has a lovely honeyed spicy carnation smell.
Oo, I’ll check this one out. I love Hiram Green!
This might be within the CP. I am wearing Sand and Sable today.
Sounds like a perfect fit, especially as itās summer here so lots of beach time
A cool, rainy day here in LA, and I’m finding cozy comfort in Stetson Cologne from Coty. The current version (ridiculously affordable) is good, but today I’m wearing vintage stuff (found on eBay, and still very affordable,) and it’s truly wonderful. Citrus, vanilla, honey, musk… I love a bunch of these classic “masculine” fragrances – Perry Ellis For Men, Ralph Lauren Chaps (and Chaps Musk,) Jovan Sex Appeal, Aramis Devin, and the original formulation of Lagerfeld For Men – they bring me back (in a gently melancholic way) to the 80s when I first started paying attention to perfume.
i would love to smell some of this scents again on a man. And i have very fond memories of Aramis Devin!
My dad wore Aramis and Devon. Loved them both on him.
Had a bottle of Aramis next to him at hospice.
Oh, they’re both so wonderful, aren’t they? My dad rarely wore cologne, but when he did it was either English Leather or Canoe; both scents conjure his memory immediately.
Devin was the FIRST fragrance I ever wore – tenth grade in high school, taking my girlfriend to the semi-formal prom. I’d never smelled anything like it, and it made me feel sophisticated and “manly.” And it still does!
Devin & Grey Flannel were the big names in my high school…and some Old Spice around too.
A couple I used to love on a man were, Gravity, Jaclyn Smiths California and Herrera.
Lagerfeld is great!
Hello all!
I’m feeling pretty elegant in Galop d’Hermes, a raspy leather that lasts for days. Apparently there are feral horses in NZ? (Thanks Google!) So we’re going with that to get CP points.
I needed a bit of protection from my physics test today. Luckily it wasn’t as hard as the homework, but because the homework was so hard, I didn’t do a great job absorbing all the material. I’m looking into a tutor, regardless of my score. Y’all probably know by now my anxiety is pretty powerful with these tests!
Have a great day everyone!
https://www.horsebreedspictures.com/kaimanawa-horse.asp
They are called Kaimanawa horses and live in the centre of the North Island, and like a good galop!. Hope the test results are up to your usual high standards! good luck!
Yes, how interesting!
Thank you for your kind words!
Hope you did better than you expected!
Thank you! It was much easier than the homework so it’s probably okay. Looking forward to getting some outside help, though. Physics is beyond my ken.
SOTD = Eris Parfums Green Spell
Oh lordie! Another one thatās in the why donāt I wear this more often category! Tomato leaf, violet leaf, galbanum, citrus. I just noticed today (or remarked on it today) that this reminds me of my beloved No.19 EDP!

I have to get cracking on my clothes purge. I had previously done it with some goals (e.g. 100 items and I have to admit to counting a pair of socks as 2). Anyway, the colors that do not suit me include: yellow, mustard, royal blue, kelly green; there are others of course but these should make it easier for me to sort. I also used to like zip-up hoodies with funky patterns but since I havenāt worn them in at least 3 years, I am going to have to include them in the giveaway pile. I have to wonder why I bought these and the colors that donāt suit me. Weāll attribute it to a first world problem of excess. I will schedule a pick up because I may have a lot to give away. Wish me luck!
Ugh, I need to do a major clothing purge too.
Good luck!
š
You smell divine!
Good luck! I have trouble with purging clothes lately as all the stuff I donāt like is already gone.
I thunked a sample of Parisian Musc today.
Congrats on the thunk!
Day two of Dior Feve Delicieuse, and I’ve thunked one of my two decants of this now. I do really enjoy this sweet tonka goodness, but of course, I recently heard of Tonka Imperiale’s discontinuation after I decided I ultimately prefer it to the Dior. Isn’t that just the way it goes? Oh well, I do still have a decant of TI so I’ll enjoy it while I have it.
I’m on the last day of the four day weekend that I gave myself, and tomorrow I’ll be going into the office for a coworker’s baby shower. Unfortunately, it’s supposed to rain all day so it’ll be a wet commute walking to catch the train. But I am looking forward to seeing people and a free lunch.
That’s exactly the way it goes!

One of the neglected graves I see on my daily cemetery walks belongs to Alfred Burton who travelled with his brother, Walter, taking photographs of NZ around the 1880s ( the Ansel Adamās of NZ, I guess). Many of his photography trips amounted to expeditions as he had to walk and carry equipment into remote or isolated places. Calypso mentioned the smell of sulphur from the hot pools yesterday so this is a photo of the famous pink and white terraces, which were considered a natural wonder ( near Rotorua) and a major subject for romanticised paintings. They were destroyed when a nearby volcano, Tarawera, erupted in 1886. Iām wearing a perfume to match the weed-covered grave of Burton, which also has tree growing from its centre, MH Wander. If youāre interested, type Burton Brothers into Google and you will find lots more photos.
Gorgeous! You are giving us all a NZ education this week.
I may not always comment, but I love all this kind of content. Thanks!
Another blech Washington Winter day. š§ļøāļøš§
Wearing SL Un Bois Vanille today because it makes me feel like a mischievous kitten all snuggled up in puffy covered cat bed. Every once in a while Iāll leap out with claws extended to skippity-bap a bare ankle or two walking by, and quickly retreat back into my little hide away with a smirk on my face. šŗ Rawrrr.
Happy Tuesday!
Now that’s a vivid description!
Any advice on how to keep a dog from thinking everything is a chew toy? He has a ton of toys already and we have been using the crate. Is it just persistence and consistency?
Ok, here we go:
#1) Once a behavior is positively reinforced, it becomes 10x more difficult to āre-traināā¦For example, a dog tips a trash can over, he gets a positive response immediately with the trash he eats. That experience is now embedded in his memory. Much of puppy training is avoiding learning bad behavior passively.
2) Always re-direct. If heās chewing on a sock, remove it with a firm NO and replace it with an acceptable chew toy, play with him for a bit with lots of praise and even a treat or two. Try to AVOID āunintended learning experiencesā by making sure no loose items (socks, underwear, shoes) are left lying around, or close a door to limit access. Definitely limit his access to the room you are in, if possible. Try to switch out toys by keeping some tucked away and rotating them to keep his interest. Like two year olds, puppies are very curious about the world and explore it with their mouth. Chewing is a natural and a needed outlet for canines. Puppies are fun, but they donāt understand your language unless you jointly work to create a language you both, over time, become very fluent in. This is what training is all about and it needs to be consistent, patient training. If, as a human, youāre trying to learn Spanish, and you respond incorrectly, and the person teaching you starts yelling, or worse, starts hitting, what would you do? You will run away, hit back, or freeze.I can guarantee you will not learn a thing except to avoid that person. Frustration is normal, so learn to identify it quickly and then just stop, put the dog up and take a break.
#3) If you canāt keep an eye on doggo, put him in the crate for a nap. When T-Rex was a puppy, I thought Iād go mad because she never āturned offā and calmed down. I learned to just put her in the crate for an hour or two to give myself a break, and give her a nap. Cattle dogs are more feral or āless domesticatedā than most other breeds because the breed was created fairly recently using wild dingos for breeding. They were bred with a very high drive to actively and physically work HARD, all day, every day, which is why they make challenging āpets.ā I donāt know how old your kids are, but cattle dogs excel at dog sports because they are so smart and they have a very high work drive. If your kids are old enough and there are agility and/or fly-ball classes in your area, itās a great way to keep both kids and doggo occupied and engaged.
#4) there is a time when you think the dog understands a command and then suddenly he stops responding to you. When behaviors are learned, itās all short term memory. As learning continues, itās shifted into long term memory and sometimes when this happens, thereās a hiccup or two. Just take a step back and help him out. Dogs are NOT devious, deceitful, or petulant. Theyāre not trying to make you look bad, anger you, or go behind your back. That stuff is all human. They only want to please you and be a valued member of the pack, and figure out where they belong in that pack. There are definitely times a dog will need a correction, but generally not during puppyhood.
#5) doggo get no love, pets or special attention unless he is calm and relaxed. Before every single treat, dinner, breakfast, or play time, he must be told to sit or down, help him out to do this if heās still learning, and the REWARD is the attention you then give him. #6) Definitely need some group obedience classes or that dog will be the cruise director of your entire household. You can email me or call me anytime and Iāll do my best to help you out. āš¼
Thanks Deva!
I’m definitely keeping doors closed. The vet had similar advice the other day. I think we will get there with him. I do need to have patience.
Your posts today show you understand, and love, both dogs and cats!
Iām an animal person. I have no idea why Iām a human nurse. Glitch in my software. š
still no points, but i smell good in Kupirijo 60ies (prune, pepper, rose and labdanum and a bit of oakmoss). Spring is coming to Germany, the snowdrops and narcissi are out and the bushes have the first hints of green buds and leaves. I hope winter will not return.
Sounds like you are a wee big ahead of us although we do have snowdrops. Join you in hoping winter will not return!
Hey, based on Kanukaās list the other day, I think you could claim points for the oakmoss!
In Chanel no.19. Went to an event this morning, where they mentioned it was a scent-free space – an hour in.
Seriously ā¦ just like this restaurant take-out place near me that is usually closed on Mondays. They just announced late Sunday that they will be open on Monday (yesterday) and will be closed today.
An acquaintance told me the other day she was worn out from producing an event (at a theater, tickets for purchase) that was happening on a Saturday night in exactly 2 weeks.
Iām on this womanās mailing list for the same category of activity. This was the first Iād heard about it. Me: š thinking āIf you want to have a good turnout for your niche entertainment event, you might actually want to, you know, tell people about it.ā
I would have loved to go, but already committed to something else.
And if itās not successful, I wonāt be surprised if the takeaway is āoh, the community isnāt supportiveā
Oopsie!
Glorious (early) springlike day here and I took the day off, since just back from a long business trip. Our daffodils are budding.
No CP for me. I went with green. And pretty. Original Shiseido Murasaki.
So glad it was gorgeous on your day off!
So dark and raining hard here.
Landslides all over near me and our beautiful landmark Wayfarers’ Church, originally built to greet sailors has been closed down due to land slippage.
SOTD will be more of my new bottle of Benjoin Boheme, I am loving it so.
So sorry apsara. Scary times in CaliLand. š
Oh, that is sad…I see it is all over the news too and I missed it.
Announcement š¶!!!
One of my nieceās had a baby boy yesterday. He is now 24 hours old. My sister just sent pictures and not only does he have a full head of hair, he has a cleft chin! Mommy and son are doing well. I donāt know when Iāll get to see them in Pennsylvania but only time will tell!
Congrats! Glad everyone is doing well. š
Congratulations!
All the best to the family!
Congratulations, happy news.
Congratulations to the whole family!
Congratulations! He sounds like a handsome little guy š
That’s such good news – congratulations on your new family member!
Congratulations! Such fun to have a new baby in the family!
Congrats!
Congratulations!
Congratulations on the terrific news!
Congratulations!
Aw, nice!
Yay! š„³
Congratulations on your brand new nephew!
Thanks everyone!
Phi for me today; I’ll take roses for the CP (though I imagine they’re introduced). Having to go with what’s in my travel bag, as we’re in Palm Springs for what was supposed to be a short warm getaway, but is turning out rainy and cool (but warmer than at home!). Need to get the family moving out of the house to do something indoors but not in the house.
Hope you found something fun to do out of the rain!
It’s almost spring-like here today. My irises are coming up through the soil. I’m in Heure Exquise, just a few sprays. Maybe I need to add a few more as I do have a bub bottle of this one.
Such a wistful gentle beauty!
That’s a great description!
My first time in the office for 2024 after doing battle with bronchitis for 3+ weeks! It seems like after 40, all of my colds have packed an extra wallop.
I wanted something herbally but substantial enough for cold weather so I went with L’Heure Verte. Hopefully it reads more as licorice than absinthe to my coworkers. š
Sipping F&M Christmas Black tea today.
Oh you poor thing, 3+ weeks of bronchitis! I’m glad to hear you’re back on your feet now.
Ugh! Glad you are finally better.
I think more people will identify it as ālicoriceā than āabsintheā. Iām sure the % of population thatās actually imbibed absinthe is pretty low, as popular as it is in the craft cocktail realm!
Wearing the Eau Dynamisante body oil by Clarins that I got ages ago, but that still smells as fresh as a daisy, or some rather hefty citrus fruit.
This is such a great scent and I tend to forget to wear it. The oil is the best way though and it is no longer made, unfortunately.
I’ve got an idea about what to wear for Friday, which will be an approximation of a New Zealand scent.
Oooh, I didn’t realize there was a body oil. **makes note.**
Remember that it has been out of production for a while
Frozen mango, clementine, apple and yogurt smoothie
I picked I Profumi Di Firenze Hayan today, it’s a patchouli vanilla scent, pretty linear but smells good, I will no longer order that line from Italy though as shipping has increased but I have a sizeable collection of the line anyway, many as travel sprays. Tonight I have changed to vintage Miss Dior esprit de parfum, one of my favorite leathers along with Diorling and Must. I must admit though Miss Dior is the better perfume.
I did not know of this version of Miss Dior.
Fragrance youtube is all talking about the new Miss Dior perfume. They all keep saying the original is Miss Dior Cherie.
I swear people talk just to hear themselves. Fwiw.. I didn’t care all that much for Cherie. I did buy it as a gift though. We share a love for Le Parfum but have you ever tried Absolutely Blooming? It’s pretty good.
Vintage esprit de parfum is just a more concentrated version, I also have the extrait, only 20 or 25ml IIRC. The lack of knowledge on YouTube is just dreadful, I agree. Persolaise is one of the few genuinely well informed, do you watch him? Funny you should mention Absolutely Blooming, I looked at a listing online but decided I had better sample it, with your recommendation I really want to now. Since I realized that I’m halfway through my bottle of Le Parfum I quit wearing it, I know it’s stupid. It’s late againš
I do watch him sometimes when I want actual information. I watch some people just to look at bottles or find something new.
I am hoarding my Le Parfum too! Lol.
I did wear it the other night though.
Purring along in Felanilla 21 today, inspired by Hajusuuri. I like it, but the saffron is a bit forward to my nose; it kinda steps on the iris. I love the very spicy amber part. I went to the BMV today and got the historic plate for my 1995 Buick wagon. I got a ticket, and before I walked three steps a lady called my number and I was done in less than 15 minutes. The power of Tuesday mornings, I guess! The plate was not as appealing as I thought because the design changed. Instead of an “old-timey car” sillouette, the tag shows the state seal, the number, and the word “HISTORIC” under the number. Well, at least our state seal has a buffalo on it. The good news was it does not cost extra.
You smell wonderful š¤£.
How old does your car have to be to get historic plates?
25 years – I’d wanted to do it sooner, but it was not a top priority. Last year I hemmed and hawed about trying to find a used 1995 state plate, which the BMW allows and will re-assign to your car. But I wanted one with my county’s number, Ebay did not provide, and I’m not ready to start going to the local car shows on this quest! š
Continuing my week of Naomi Goodsir with Iris CendrĆ©. This definitely falls into the “why don’t I wear this more often” category.
š
Another cool rainy day. Iām in Omnia Madera for coziness. Not sure I have anything for the CP, but maybe Australian Southern Bloom will do?
I don’t have anything perfect either! Wear what you’d wear if you went there on vacation, or find a picture of a New Zealand landscape and wear the fragrance that you think matches…do anything you like š
I went shoe shopping and briefly perfume sniffing today but bought nothing. I tried Kilian Can’t Stop Loving You and Apple Brandy at Sephora but didn’t like either one enough to purchase on the spot. I’ll try again sometime in different weather.
I didn’t like either one of those either.
I really liked Apple Brandy but not enough to buy it!
I’m trying out Chance eau Fraiche for the 100th time today. I’m still trying to pick a perfume to use my points on.
After 100 times I would give up and get something else!
Ah, Corsica Furiosa–the only scent that’s too green for me.
Ahhh, itās my summer go to, but I can see why it might be too much for some.
Interesting because I do not think of it as the greenest thing ever!
Commando most of the day again, just finally put on Tea for Two. I guess I could go for CP points with a Commonwealth / tea connection. Google AI (so: the laziest of research efforts on my part; accuracy unknown) says that in the 1870s Australia and NZ had the highest tea consumption in the world. Currently NZ is ranked 45th per this AI, but 6th per Wikipedia (as of 2016). Wow, thatās some variance. Per the 2016 article, UK was 3rd and US was 35th. Have a guess at which country was #1! (I guessed wrong.)
