Happy Friday! It's also Bill of Rights Day and National Cupcake Day. Birthdays today: Gustave Eiffel, John Hammond, Edna O’Brien. Our community project for today: wear whatever you like, but tell us the name your fragrance should have had. (If the name is perfect, that's an acceptable answer.) Someone suggested this recently, raise your hand if it was you!
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm went with a "what it says on the label" fragrance: La Via del Profumo Amber Chocolate.
Reminder: 12/22 will be Best Buy Friday...wear your favorite fragrance purchase of 2023. If you didn't buy anything this year, pick a favorite from a prior year. (This is a repeat from 2016)
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I will be talking about the Bill of Rights today at NYPL..didn’t know it had its own day..
Layering Ambre Loup with a few drops of orange blossom oil.
Eating cranberry walnut toast and thinking a may need another coffee..
Breakfast Twins! 🙌
Explain your toast for me please!(are thise toppings or is it a cranberry and walnut bread?)
In case ltsg does not come back, cranberry nut bread is likely bread with cranberry and walnuts in it as opposed to toppings. It could be a “regular” bread (that you could make sandwiches with, many bakeries make a cranberry nut loaf of some sort and I can buy it in a local supermarket) or it could be closer to a dessert or sweet loaf, closer to banana bread.
Thanks Robin- mine is closer to bread and not a
Sweet bread 🍞
Sorry to answer for you! And hope that talk went well.
Hope the talk went well.
So do I! Who’s in the audience?
Close…I had apricot-pecan sourdough toast!!
Yum!
I’m wearing Fragonard Eau du Séducteur, which I adore, a soft spicy-woody concoction, the sort of thing you could wear in an office and not trouble anyone, though they might lean in a little closer when you’re talking, because it smells really inviting.
But the name is just embarrassing, although admittedly of a piece with the brand, which has fragrances named Beau Gosse (“handsome guy”) and Billet Doux (“love letter”). I would have called it Eau Subtile, because it really is surprisingly subtle and appealing, or, if they they think North American tourists will pronounce that wrong, Eau Raffinée. Something a little more sophisticated than “seducer”, anyway.
House twins😃
Ah, good call, that is a stupid name.
I’m wearing Youth-Dew, and I think it definitely could be renamed, but I’ve got nothing. Any suggestions? I love it, by the way.
I would agree that it definitely could be renamed, but as I sit here and think about it, I got nothing either. Someone will help out.
With all the spices and resins in Youth Dew, you could call it Silk Road, though there may be a perfume of that name already.
It’s been around so long you could probably rename it Mildew but that’s just mean….🤣🤣✌🏻
LOL!
😃
🤣
I used to think of it as “Smother me” when my mother wore it and over sprayed!
That *is* mean but also hilarious.
Love,
A Youth Dew Fan
Thank you for the laugh!
I don’t thin there’s any perfume that could be appropriately named “Youth Dew”. I immediately think it’s some wrinkle-defense serum.
Hello and tgif!
Sotd is LV Ombre Nomade. I think it’s quite aptly named. Can’t think of a nicer sounding name for a dark oud like this (and I have forgotten almost all of my middle school French…).
Planned to meet up with a friend tomorrow but she’s caught the bug and now has all the symptoms – sniffles, clogged sinuses, cough, phlegm (ew) etc. so, boo, rain check!
Happier note, I got a Christmas red velvet chocolate chip muffin from my local bakery and it was moist, fluffy and so good. Didn’t even miss the absent frosting.
That muffin sounds scrumptious.
❤️ red velvet anything! Sounds yum! 😋
I am wearing Chanel Cristalle EDT, and I think the name is perfect.
I’ve always thought Cristalle was such a great name.
Perfect name for that icy green marvel!
I always think of water weed when I wear it. On a pretty pond, not a stagnant one.
I too agree.
I am wearing one of the most aptly named perfumes I own, DSH December. I get notes of evergreens, wood, spices, incense, smoke, perhaps a hint of candle wax. In other words, all the things one associates with December.
That sounds like the perfect name for it.
Sounds like a great scent with a very fitting name!
Wearing L’Artisan Tea for Two. The name matches the scent perfectly.
It has been a very busy end of the year at work and in my personal life. There is no sign of slowing down anytime soon, but I will survive.
The first holiday lunch at work is today, so I’m looking forward to it. In the meantime, on my second cup of coffee and an eggnog muffin.
Happy Friday! ☕️
You smell wonderful!
Thank you! 😊
Hopeful you can relax during the holidays.
Thank you, Aurora. I am looking forward to it!
Eggnog muffin sounds very intriguing!
I agree this one is well named! You smell delightful
Thank you!
It is indeed a great and beautiful name!
I chose Caleche, partly because it could really use a new name and partly because I just love it. Calèche translates as “carriage” which admittedly is one of Hermès’ iconic images, but it does nothing to describe the fragrance. I’m awful at renaming things though — looking at the extensive, old-school list of notes, how about Évier de Cuisine Magnifique? Or Beau Fouillis Poudrée? French-speaking readers will be cringing, I know. 🫣 Hey, happy Friday everyone!
Caleche shoulda coulda been “Twilly” actually!Love it so much in colder wearher!
Edna O’Brien, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways…! What a writer, what a woman…she’s like a superhero to me. Despite of her books being banned and burned in her own country, she kept the flow going, always pushing, writing stories with prose that is poetry, about subjects and the subjugated no one wants to acknowledge, taking the reader on a harrowing journey through the glory and wretchedness of the human experience. I would recommend her to anyone and everyone. A couple of the very best, imho, “Down by the River,” and “House of Splendid Isolation.”
Off my soapbox now! Wearing ELDO Fils de Dieu. Yum!
My mother’s name was Edna. She hated it. I do like Ms. O’Brien, however.
So many good ones to choose from.
I love Edna O’Brien, my aunt made me discover her books when I was a teenager, Country Girls was the first I read.
2nd all of that. I don’t know why I don’t reread her books, some day maybe I will.
I’m wearing Mon Parfum Cheri, par Camille which is both a mouthful at the perfume counter and doesn’t describe this moody fragrance at all, so for today we will rename it Shadow Song or Chanson de l’ombre (or so google tells me, I don’t speak French). This name also doubles as the title of the noir novel that could be inspired by this fragrance.
I’m not familiar with your sotd but Shadow Song is a great perfume name.
I decided to go with Cuir Auvergnat from L’Artisan’s “Les Paysages”-range, which – if I may say so – is now perfectly named as well 😉 .
Perfect!
Wearing 4160 Tuesdays Cherry Who? Love the funny name and wouldn’t change a thing. Happy Friday!
I was looking through my 4160 Tuesdays collection recently and saw that I have this!
Their names are fun.I have a bit of “Sunshine and pancakes” and that one is also very aptly named!
I hope you have a happy weekend. I might see one of those crested grebes this weekend, so will be thinking of your husband. They are amazing birds.
He’s rewatching the episode right now, John Oliver is dressed in a bird costume. Anything to get attention I guess. I’m sure the actual bird is much more interesting. 🙂
I am in Mitsouko EdT. Mitsouko means mystery in Japanese and it is also the heroine in the novel La Bataille (The Battle). Apparently, Jacques Guerlain was good friends with the author of this novel. There is more history on this on the Bois de Jasmin site. I do find this fragrance to be a mystery so maybe the name fits. What I find in it, which is not listed as a note, is a civet or animalic scent. When I first spray it on me, I get the smell of Zoologist Civet. Probably just my skin mixing with it. I do love it though!
I’ve always loved the stories behind some Guerlain fragrances(or apparent inspirations for their creations!).
Mitsouko will always have a special place in my heart!
Happy Friday everyone! We’re still in the absence of winter with sunshine, light breeze and expected temperature of 52F! Larry the cat has been napping belly up in sunny windows all week. I’ll take it. Usually the winter permacloud from Lake Michigan has set up by now.
My sotd is Wazamba, which I think is perfectly named.
Wazamba is indeed Wazamba.
Wazamba is a great name. I should do a week of PdE soon. Been a while!
Which is your favorite Pd’E?
I want to say Tabac Tabou, but I’m coming off a couple years hiatus from my perfume collection so am getting to know everything again. I might change my mind!
I have Tabac, Cuir Ottoman, Ambre Russe, Wazamba, and Azemour. Haven’t sniffed anything they came out with in the last couple of years. Saw one of their recent bottles was super $$$, thought, nah, I don’t even need to sample it.
I’m wearing Zoologist Nightingale. I know almost nothing about nightingales but I find the name very evocative, and it suits this vintagey fruity chypre very well.
I just googled nightingales and hmm, I think this perfume needs a more colorful bird! Ha!
The colour is in their song!
So true, I should listen to their song to see if it matches the scent.
I have such sad memories of the children’s story The Emperor’s New Nightingale, which my mother used to read to us. I’m not sure I could ever wear that perfume.
Slept 10 hours. Delish.
Post Shower will be Cuir de Russie, which is aptly named.
PSA – PSA – for NST regulars CONUS – Give away of Dear Polly, 20ML.
Two sprays missing, won’t ship till end of month.
E me at vivienne dot elliott1 in the land of outlook.com
Dear Polly is claimed, thank you!!
10 hours of sleep + Cuir de Russie is indeed delish!
On my way to visit my grandmother in skilled nursing. It’s her 93rd birthday today. Wearing Eau Premiere for comfort, even though she isn’t a fan of Chanel offerings. I think that Eau Premiere was aptly named.
Dawn, have a good visit with your grandmother and happy birthday wishes to her!
I hope you have a nice visit, and she has a happy day
Happy birthday to your grandma, Dawn!
Have a good visit, happy birthday to her.
Happy Birthday to grandma! I’m sure your presence is one of the best presents she will receive today!
I hope you had a nice visit. Happy Birthday to your Grandma!
I’m up in the dry middle of the South Island, near Aoraki/ Mt Cook ( the highest mountain) and it’s warm and the ground is golden tussock as far as the eye can see. Wild lupins are in full flower, so lots of yellows and mauves, and the lakes are all glacial and turquoise coloured. The only sound is that of skylarks, as this is perfect country for them, trilling loudly. I love watching them , as they have such a distinct way of flying, hovering over the paddocks. There’s a rabbit outside my window hopping along, and two thrushes on the grass. I think I’ve found summer!I only have a solid of rose jam with me so that’s my scent. The title is perfect.
https://nzbirdsonline.org.nz/sites/all/files/22%20-%20Track%2022.mp3
My current soundtrack, skylarks.
Skylarks are so amazing! I love hearing their beautiful song so high in the sky.
And your post was just perfect! 🙏
Oh yay, so glad you found summer. It sounds beautiful.
Thanks for the lovely comment, very evocative.
Parfums de Marly Delina edp.I’m not too familiar with the adcopy or inspo for the brand and their creations, but Delina sounds like a soft elegant french woman, and it sure does smell softly feminine and somewhat tres chic! The bottles are lovely as well!
Hope you have a great weekend and you can relax and spend it exactly as you like!
Loooong weekend as we scored a public holiday today as a result of the World Cup win!(haha!)
Happy weekend to you as well!
What!! You guys, give it a rest already!
🤣🤣✌🏻
Wait, are you in Argentina? 3 members of my 6-person work team are in Argentina. So I’ve been sharing in the joy 🤩 😂
Haha! No,I’m talking about the Rugby World cup which my South Africa won against Kanuka’s NZ earlier this year!
Woo-hoo! Enjoy your weekend!
Thanks babe!💕
I hope you’re able to unwind a bit this weekend!
So far so good thanks!Happy weekend to you as well!✌🏻🤗
I bet you smell great, ashamed to say I have never tried Delina.
I think if you enjoy soft raspy rose-centred florals like Agent Provocateur or Stella you might enjoy Delina as well.
MCMC Noble today. Tea, incense, and amber…I’m not sure what’s particularly “noble” about it, but I’m not sure I have a better name, either. It’s one of my go-to comfort scents.
A go-to comfort scent is so important!
SOTD = Jo Malone Myrrh & Tonka
Myrrh and tonka … 🤣. I’m a lover, are you? It is very aptly named!

Hopefully, none of your nearest and dearest are in a hospital or a rehab center. If you do have one, I wish this person the best. In the meantime, the New York Times had a nice article today on “How to Comfort Someone When They’re in the Hospital”:
1. Give them thinks that give them comfort. Example: if they are ambulatory, a pair of fluffy slippers with non-skid soles.
2. Ask if a pet can drop by. If not, ask if the patient can be wheeled to or walk outside where the pet is welcome.
3. Keep visits brief. 15 to 30 minutes is good, otherwise the person may feel like they need to be host.
4. Build anticipation. On FaceTime or some other tools, mention so and so will call at 2PM and so and so will call at 3PM
I will provide a link as a reply to this. Same caveats apply with the pay wall.
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/15/well/family/hospital-illness-support-comfort.html
You smell great!
My Brother will be going to a rehabilitation hospital this spring. He is having a tumor removed near his brain. They say he will have to learn to talk and walk again. He will also lose half his hearing. I am nervous for him.
That is some great advice.I can just add this:
Skip the flowers and rather bring a waterwise plant, something edible or even a small plushy toy!
a plant can be re-potted,people always get the munchies and who can resist a plushy pink elephant?✌🏻
I’m in the original Silences for day of meetings. Should be called Tough but Not Mean.
(There is only one fragrance that got spontaneously renamed in my world, well before this CP. Vol de Nuit, otherwise known here as “Lady of a Certain Age Goes to the Opera.”)
Your titles are cracking me up!
😀
OMG that is perfect.
Tough but Not Mean is perfect.
Apples, pears, banana and yogurt smoothie
It was Fragonard Grain de Soleil today, it’ essentially a winter scent and should be called Epices Douces. Tonight it’s YR Nature Millénaire, I liké the name, it was released in 2000, so it makes sense and smells so good. I haven’t kept up with Yves Rocher and they are no longer in the UK.
Nature Millenaire is one of my favorite fall scents, I think it’s absolutely beautiful, one of YR’s best ever!
That’s the time of the year I wear it too. Yes, it may be YR’s best.
I have no interest in or plans to rename Chanel No 5 and the other numbered Chanels but it occurred to me at some point on my perfume journey that even though the names in French are written the same, the French don’t call it “Chanel Number Five” or “Chanel Number Nineteen”. They call them “Chanel Numéro Cinq” and “Chanel Numéro Dix Neuf”.
Forgive me if this is the most obvious observation but I thought it fit tangentially with our naming theme😊
I found this Chanel ad “For the First Time” in French and in English –
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7m8_f4pgqI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRQa33dqyxI&t=32s
Oh, and I’m wearing Chanel No 5 today, bien sûr!
I am glad you shared this – I never thought about it!
Surprisingly this has never crossed my mind. Everything sounds better in French.
I’m wearing Zoologist’s Bee…which might be better named Beast. I rarely wear this because even one spray is an enormous amount of perfume. It wears me. It lasts forever on clothing, detectable after washing. Bee takes my award for strongest perfume in my entire collection.
I probably should decant some and dab it…or give up and re-home it. It’s fascinating, but not for any situation where there are perfume averse people. There are massive orange blossoms up top, and amber, but there is a dark fur like base note that makes me try it again and again.
That might be a CP discussion—do you like big fragrances, and what’s the perfume with most massive sillage in your collection or in your experience? Be well.
How interesting! It seems to me many people have enjoyed wearing Bee without mentioning this furry beast. I’m intrigued. I haven’t noticed that myself, though I’m not a fan of the scent. Is it honey related, do you think? A big bear also after the bee’s honey?
Bees are fuzzy, so perhaps it was intentional. I read the official notes…and suspect the musks, benzoin and labdanum are what my nose reads as fur.
People describe it as a honey scent…but you’re right. I’d say closer to bear than honey!
Bee is very strong – it fits the Zoologist ideal of being an animal’s whole environment.
Ooh, I love the dark furry side of Bee, and that it lasts all day. I should try it now, I’ve only worn it in the summer.
I love massive sillage because my skin eats perfume. My top contenders are Naomi Goodsir Nuit de Bakélite, Corpus Equus and Bois d’Ascèse, FM Carnal Flower, SL Sa Majesté la Rose, Lush Lust, Perris Monte Carlo Pays de Jasmin. other indolic jasmines…It’s so fun to make a list!
For the CP: Opium, an edt I’d guess was from the ’90’s. The dry down is closed to the original which I know from the “Bath Silk” version. I wish they had named it Cinnabar (EL may have already beat them to the name, though it came out after Opium) or Silk Road or just anything else. I never paid attention to it because I thought the name was flippant. But when I did finally smell it, I thought it was very beautiful, as are the bottles, so the name seemed more unworthy! I guess I am used to it now, and anyway, it’s not the same perfume so I would not buy more.
Opium was amazing. My mother had a bottle of the perfume in the early ‘80s and I loved it. The bottle, the glass stopper and the smell. I would sneakily dab it…but who was I kidding? No one sneaks Opium! I tried a later version and it wasn’t the same. I think that was my introduction to formula alterations. I scraped up cash to buy the EdP 20 years later and when I got home was so upset it wasn’t the fragrance I remembered.
For today’s cp, I’m going with what I think is a perfect name for one of the most beautiful fragrances I own, Jean Patou Sublime. Its beautiful golden color, classic bottle, a bit of fruit and spice with well-blended floral heart notes resting on my favorite base notes make this chypre floral truly sublime! I feel so elegant whenever I wear it, usually on a cool but sunny fall day when the leaves are golden on the trees. Although the leaves are gone from the trees now, today featured blue skies, bright 🌞 and temps in the 50’s – very unlike a mid-December day here in the Midwest – so I’m really enjoying my SOTD. (The only other names I could give it would be Glorious! or Golden! but I think Sublime describes its beauty best.)
In addition to the special days and birthdays Robin listed, today is also The Gift of Nothing Day. As a devoted Mutts fan, I’m celebrating this day of presence, not presents. Want to know more? You can learn all about it at Mutts.com (no affiliation, just a huge fan of Patrick McDonnell). Looking forward to dinner at our favorite local seafood restaurant tonight, which is the closest I can get to my favorite Jimmy Cantler’s Riverside Inn in Annapolis, Maryland 🦀, and finishing up the holiday decorating. Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead!🎄🎅☃️🔥
So sorry I missed a special day!!
Patou did great names in general, I think. Joy is obviously perfectly named as well 🙂
I’m in the perfectly named Une Fleur de Cassie. Such a classy perfumes deserves a beautiful name. Happy Friday, everyone!
You smell very classy!
I’m a huge Une Fleur de Cassie fan!
Wearing Angels’ Share today and it smells great. 🍎 🥧I had a decant of this one but never got a FB.
I think Apple Brandy has come out since but I haven’t tried it. Wondering how Apple Brandy and Angels’ Share compare and which is better if anyone has an opinion please.
I have tried both and this is just my opinion, but I felt that on me the Apple Brandy was too masculine. I do know many that like it though.
Thanks, Kris. I see some reviews on Fragrantica say it’s masculine too.
The new version of Apple Brandy has very noticeable ambroxan. I prefer Angel’s Share.
Picture a circle with Ambroxan written in the middle and a slash over it. It’s a perfume menace!
Thanks, lllyjo! As I was going to bed last night. I could smell some ambroxan in the Angels’ Share too. ehaeheh it’s really hard to avoid. I feel like in can be detected in maybe half or so of new releases.
I recently tried the new Apple Brandy and Smoking Hot,and as a Kilian lover,I was puzzled. They seem incoherent and muddled, smoking hot was just weird too.
Thanks, JB. I sniffed Smoking Hot and wasn’t a fan either.
What a day. Finally put on fragrance: LL Poivre 23.
I posted the other day about all the stuff I was going to do today, most of it fun (well, other than the mammogram). I was early to my appt for the mammogram, checked in and then proceeded to wait for an hour. I finally went to the check-in desk and asked to make sure I was not being forgotten. Oh — they accidentally marked me as a no show and then wanted me to WAIT for when they could work me in. Nope. I already had been waiting. And waiting. I was polite, but I said they needed to take me next. I normally don’t push things but today I did – I had a class to get to.
Then I left my phone at one of my errands and had to go back for it through awful traffic. Then I missed my exit off the freeway for the class and didn’t have time for lunch. Finally home now, didn’t run the errands I was planning to but did get to hold grandson for a bit, enjoyed my craft class with a friend and did get mammo done. So all is okay in the grand scheme.
Wow, what a day! Glad it’s a case of alls well that ends well. Enjoy your weekend.
How frustrating! I’m so glad you got some good grandson time😊
Good for you for getting it *mostly* done despite the setbacks!
I have been trying to buy thermal back curtains and am now on my second set of returns.
Back to the ordering board.
I wore Fenty today because I love the perfume but hate the name. It is predominantly a Rose perfume and I think it should say so in the name.
I ought to have thermal curtains but I don’t! Good luck finding the right one.
Good luck with the search Lillyjo, I have thermal curtains in my bedroom.
Love La Via del Profumo Amber Chocolate, and this is a great time of the year for it!
I’m skating in at the very least minute, West Coast (USA) time: I’ve been commando the last 2 days as I was out of town, part work, part social, and didn’t pack any perfume.
Got home at 11PM to find my bottle of LO Vanagloria had finally arrived (ordered from site 50ml, so it shipped from Europe). It’s so gorgeous and perfectly named!
