It's Wednesday, plus National Bundt Cake Day, Steve Irwin Day and Georgia O’Keeffe’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?
Diptyque makes so many of my favorites from my early days as a perfumista, and key point, they still make them. Philosykos, Tam Dao, Oyédo, L'Ombre dans L'Eau...I am so grateful none of them have been discontinued. I like some of their newer — but still old in perfume terms — efforts, like Eau des Sens and Volutes, but they wouldn't break my heart if they disappeared. So today I'm in Philosykos, even though I wear it so much at night (or sometimes, just smell it on paper) that it always feels a little odd to be wearing it first thing in the morning.
Reminder: 11/17 will be Gratitude Friday…wear a perfume that you feel grateful for coming into your life, that arrived at the right time, helped you face a difficult situation, or simply enriches your day when you wear it. Suggested by Kanuka.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Hello.
Sotd is Shalimar MI. I am grateful that Shalimar is still going strong and beautiful flankers are being made.
My grandmother was urgently hospitalized two hours ago. She has heart failure, fluid in lungs and heart inflammation index is 4 times higher than normal. Please help send prayers her way. Thank you.🙏
Oh no! I am so sorry! Sending prayers!
So sorry to hear that. Hoping she bounces back ASAP!
Haooy888cat, I’ll hold some good thoughts for you and for your family. Take care.

Hope your grandmother turns around quickly!
Sending her all the prayers ❤️
Thank you all so very much! 🥺🥺❤️
Any news yet?
Prayers for your grandma.
I love Diptyque too. Tam Dao is one of my all time favorites.
Today I’m in Lea. Grateful I found a sealed box on eBay a few years ago. I’ll be sad when it’s gone.
Robin, not sure if you are a fan of Cat Power at all (I love her) and/or if you are aware she just released a new album Cat Power Sings Dylan.
Enjoy😊:

I did know, but thank you, I do miss so many things!
I have not listened to all of it yet, but her Desolation Row is absolutely gorgeous and I will listen to all of it eventually.
I do not care for her Like a Rolling Stone, she just doesn’t have enough scorn in her voice. It is a song that requires a touch of snarl, to me.
Also reminds me that I never sat and listened to her last covers album and I will make a note to do that this weekend.
Gratitude!
I am wearing Vol De Nuit. I am very grateful for the existence of this perfume, and to have it in my life.
You smell amazing! I love Vol de Nuit. Years ago, they made a scented powder for Christmas scented with Vol de Nuit. It had subtle sparkles and it was beautiful.
I’m still in Coromandel EDT, and it’s great. Weather has been gross and I keep driving in snow and freezing rain, and Coromandel is giving off comfort and beauty. 🙂
Guerlain twins
Gaynor gave me a sample of VdN and I also fell in love with it. Enjoy your day!
Vol de Nuit is my true love. 💘 I received a sample as an extra in a swap many years ago, and it’s been #1 since my first bottle.
I wore that yesterday. I bought a bottle of extrait de parfum a couple of years ago and wear it very rarely. I do love it though. Nothing is quite as comforting as a grand old Guerlain. (well Paris YSL maybe).
You’ve inspired me to wear that tonight, after I’ve finished my errands. Staying commando until then
I’m wearing my favorite (marketed as) male scent, Old Spice. I am thankful that through reading NST, I realized that if you like it there is nothing wrong with wearing a scent marketed to another gender.
Absolutely
Yes! Love this
Wearing Box of Eels EDT because it’s a scent that works anywhere, any time, any situation. Very grateful I bought a bottle years ago since there no way I’d pay todays prices.
We’re moving house today, although staying in the same park, just driving about 10 miles away to a different spot on the water.
Yesterday I signed a new contract, which makes me cry 😭. I want to squeeze one more contract in before I head to France in April. I submitted my application and 30 minutes later got an offer. The quickest turnaround in history I think. Even my recruiter was astounded. Bless him, he tried to put a positive spin on by telling me “your résumé speaks for itself!” In reality, that hospital system is probably just desperate because I saw they had a lot of openings. Anyway, I’m going to spend the next month and a half trying not to think about it!
Happy Humpday all!
Hang in there Deva, I’m sorry it sounds like the contract isn’t what you prefer. I hope all works out and smooths over for you.
The good news is, in a month or so, you’ll be in France eating beautiful food – croissants!! Chocolate Pots de crème Baguettes! WINE!! Enjoy every second of your trip!
Oh, it’s not the contract, which is perfectly average, it’s me. I just don’t want to do bedside nursing anymore. I just want to toodle around the US with my Bestie in my rolling home. Vroom vroom!
So where are you going on your next assignment Deva? Somewhere in New Mexico?
Close! The only thing available in NM is in Albuquerque and really didn’t want to be in a larger urban area. We will be in Tucson, AZ starting in January. 🌵
You will like the weather in January there.
Yes, that was the big draw, plus a ton of boon-docking in that area of Arizona. I just hope it doesn’t get too hot before we’re done.
Tucson is a delightful place, although it has probalby, like everything, grown since I was there.
There will be fun things to do outside of work in that area.
And, I concur with the “Soon I will be in Paris, eating croissant and watching the people…” crowd. Just keep whispering it under your breath… I am quite jealous, actually!
Well, the trip I REALLY wanted to go on, the one that focused entirely on the history of humankind in that area and was led by an anthropologist was twice as much. I’m getting the “cheap seats” so it’ll probably be like shopping in Walmart. No one would be jealous of THAT! 😆
Tucson! Go to Mast while you’re there. It’s in a cute little shopping…not mall, but a connected collection of boutiques and cafes around a courtyard. Mast carries La Curie perfumes, so if you haven’t tried her perfumes, you can sample. They’re also quite reasonably priced…the 15 ml bottles are a bit more now than they used to be, but still decent and a good size for what I need at this point.
Oh, good to know! Thanks much😊
You are doing such an important work.
That’s nice of you to say but honestly, I don’t feel that way anymore. 🤷🏻♀️ I hope things are calming down a bit for you, your mom and your cat.
Burn out? Then I agree with the others: think of your holidays in France.
Things are mostly calm here. The bad news is that I do not think the war will end soon…
Unfortunately, I agree with you. So many horrible things going on…
Just think of your holidays in France, this will get you over the winter
I’ll be dangling that trip in front of my nose like a carrot in front of a horse, believe me! 😂
Good luck with your next contract! I second tannina’s comment – if things get hard, repeat this mantra: “I’ll be in France soon….I’ll be in France soon…..”
Thanks! Yeah, France…🤩
“Sorry” about your contract, it’s a shame you lost all pleasure in nursing. Would there be any other health care job you think you’d enjoy better?
Where in France will you be travelling? If you need any tips just give me a shout, I’ve travelled there extensively, although not in a camper. It’s actually a nice country to visit with a dog. I think there are some restrictions regarding pit bulls and the like, but overall dogs are mostly welcome.
I’m doing a tour and while we will have some free mornings and evenings, we’ll be sticking close to the Perigord/Dordogne area and won’t have transportation other than the tour van. The tour focuses on wine/ gastronomy, which is secondary to me. I mean, I’ll eat great and I’m not mad about that but the other focus is the rich history of human habitation back to Neanderthal times. We will be touring some caves and listening to “expert led” lectures, so that’s the part I’m really psyched about!
Doggo will be staying in a kennel. As for the nursing part, I may look into some remote work but that is generally five days a week, which I don’t want to do. Wah wah wah, I know. 🙄 Something will work out eventually.
It’s an interesting region in France. I hope your tour takes you to Sarlat as well. It’s easily the prettiest town in that area.
I sometimes miss working in healthcare but it is a very demanding job, in your country in particular I would think.
Glad you have six more weeks of freedom! And France in April, that’s lovely.
Thank you! I wish I could pack some friends in my carry on. 🇫🇷
I am wearing Eau de Camellia Chinois, one of the perfumes I got in Paris years ago, I am not sure if they still make it. Smells wonderful!!
I emptied half a bottle of this, so nice in summer
I am in Shalimar EDP- wearing more vanilla on me today.
I am always grateful to Shalimar the queen 👸
I do adore Shalimar, such a beautiful scent. I may wear Shalimar Souffle Intense tomorrow for the department staff appreciation lunch.
Since you and many others on here love books, this week I am going to this exhibition on the ground floor of the Grolier club
https://www.grolierclub.org/Default.aspx?p=DynamicModule&pageid=384827&ssid=322448&vnf=1
The Grolier Society has a fascinating exhibit about the compact books sent to the armed forces during World War Ii. “The Best-Read Army in the World ”
More than one billion books, magazines and newspapers sent to 16 million troops worldwide. And fought off Congressional censorship!
OMG, I’d never heard of this institution, and the exhibit sounds fascinating. My father served in the Army then; I wonder if he ever took advantage of that program.
BTW, of course I rushed to eBay, and, yes, there are some for sale! 😻
Parts of NYPL served as a book canteen during WWII
Wearing Halston original this morning and I should be at Studio 54, obviously.
Obviously! You smell great.
You smell fabby!!
I’m grateful for Diptyque too. L’Artisan Parfumeur and Diptyque were the first two niche brands, in that order, that I got into many moons ago. Diptyque candles are great too and the jars are pretty and reusable once cleaned out, although it is far and few between when I get them. I’ll wear Tam Dao today
Yes…L’Artisan too although the Diptyques are perhaps more part of my life than even my early L’Artisan favorites, I don’t know why. I just wear them more.
It’s an early good morning from me, I’m flying to Auckland for the day for work, and I needed to be up about an hour and a half earlier than usual – I find that very challenging!
I’m wearing Encens Mythique d’Orient, it’s a favourite and I happen to have some in a travel spray that I can easily throw in my handbag.
Hope you manage to squeeze in a perfume browse
I love your SOTD!
Wearing Commes des Garcons original today, my first niche purchase after discovering the perfume blogiverse, starting with NST. I’m grateful!
Clothes shopping yesterday was, um, enlightening. I seem to be between sizes, still found a couple of things, but it’s mind-blowing how different the same size is between brands. Why does women’s stuff always seem so much more $$ and complicated than men’s? Rhetorical question.
You smell great ringthing!
Jean sizes especially….it is ridiculous how the sizes vary, even when you’re looking at jeans that are supposedly sized by inches.
Glad you found some things though!
SOTD is Henry Jacques Femme extrait. Very similar to Aromatics Elixir, chypre florals with moss, carnation, rose, jasmine, oakmoss and patchouli. My bottle is about 30 years old, from when I was a fragrance SA at a boutique on St Armand’s circle. We’re at the hump of the week! Yay!
My MIL wears this one and Youth Dew
I can’t stop thinking about these strange and beautiful ornaments:
https://choosingkeeping.com/collections/christmas-2021
I especially want the snowy owl that also looks like a white bat. And the cotton batting rose with the antique porcelain doll’s face. 😻
Totally not feasible, sigh. 💔
I second original Diptyque and L’Artisan Parfumeur, and would add Annick Goutal and Demeter as niche brands that were formative for me as a perfumista. I am grateful for them!
I love the owl, too. I noticed him yesterday. I also want the hedgehog and the little camera. 🙂
Those are adorable! 😻
I’m applying Robin’s comment concerning Diptyque to Serge Lutens. I came across Serge Lutens somewhere ( can’t remember, it’s that long ago) and was attracted by the simple label ( loved the font and colour of the paper) on the bottle and the colour of the juice ( hate the newer big black labels that obscure the colour ) ….and the amazing perfume ( it must have been Ambre Sultan). Though there have been changes, I still love SL and for me even the bad SLs are often interesting with a hint of personality. So, I’m wearing Fleurs de Citronnier
👍👍👍👍👍
I remember coming across SL in 2001, sniffing the sprayers, and recoiling because it was TOO STRANGE. Fast forward to 2009 and I sampled La Myrrhe, Bois de Violette, A la Nuit, and Iris Silver Mist and became obsessed. It’s been a long time since I’ve bothered to sample any new ones, though.
House twins! Grateful for SL right along with you.
And I think of that as a specialty SL…even back in my early days of perfume when everyone was SL-mad, very few people wore FdC. You smell lovely!
I am in Shalimar MI again. Seems like I reach for it all the time. I am wondering if I should get a back up to my back up bottle. Am I crazy??? Guerlain is still selling it which kind of surprises me as the tonka and vanilla versions seems to have not stuck around very long. Maybe I am wrong about that, as at that time I was not really looking at them.
Yes the other flankers sold out faster. I love Shalimar. You are not crazy to buy a BUB. Donatella forgives
If you say so. It’s a back up to a back up, but I figured, “why not?” Done.
Good job! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Honestly, if this perfume brings you so much joy and you reach for it so often, why the heck not buy a backup to the backup? Maybe even an extra backup would be smart? When your 75 you’ll still have a supply to bring you happiness.
Well, I will be 65 next month so it will need to last 10 years. Who knows if I will last that long😉
THere are others here (not me) who will admit to having decades worth of backups for some perfumes. You do you, as they say!
I don’t do back ups very often, but did with No 5 L’Eau and Iris Poudre. I did swap my Iris Poudre for something else so may get a back up of that again someday.
I wonder if it was a bigger production run…
That’s what I’m thinking.
Wearing another gifted scent – MDCI Parfums En Coeur en Mai. If it had not been given to me, I would not even have approached it, because it has several notes I find difficult: melon, blackcurrant, mimosa and galbanum. I actually enjoy it a lot! It is a lovely fluffy, fresh green floral. A perfect scent to relive May in November.
Isn’t it amazing?! I wonder how many perfumes I have poo-pooed because they had a note I didn’t like, and had I actually tried them, I might have fallen in love..? Money saved I guess.
Apples and yogurt smoothie
A dry, sunshiny day, a welcome change. Today was Rose Amazone which has never been much talked about but I find it elegant and after the sugarfest of Rose Jam, very enjoyable rose. Tonight it’s a green chypre, Alix Grès which stands in the shadow of the great Cabochard.
Not a bad shadow to stand in 🙂
True and it’s actually easier to wear.
Todays scent is DSH Aoud Blanc from a small sample kindly given by the famous Portia herself. I won it on the blog, and it was shipped around to Germany. Gratefull for the dentist, that has found no cavities today!
No cavities is a winner for sure! And what a nice trip around the world that perfume took to get to you!
OJ Woman. Thankful for a lovely friend who pointed me to a very good deal so that I could obtain a bottle of this wonderful fragrance. Sometimes I even think maybe this is THE ONE. But the next day I wear Theorema or Mx. or Cinéma or No. 5 L’eau or any number of others and I think “don’t be silly, it won’t ever be just one.”
I sometimes wonder about just one too, but I don’t ever see that happening. There are a lot of people out there that do that though.
You smell fabulous! OJ is a fragrance for the ages.
I was looking for something in particular to wear today, and I didn’t know quite what. 🤔 I pawed around in my disorganized bottles and found it: Cuir Mauresque. Perfect for a chilly fall day. So grateful that beauties like these were made.
That’s a favorite of mine, too. I was appalled the first time I smelled it way back when. I mean, I almost retched I found it so horrible. And now it’s one of my favorites. Go figure. Is there anything more fickle than one’s own nose? You smell delightful!
Fickle indeed.
Hello all! No perfume today but still have the remnants of Shalimar MI on my jumper to enjoy.
Speaking of Diptyque, Delice from their holiday candle collection is my winter candle for this year. Sapin is wonderful and piney as usual, Coton was somewhat bland and uninteresting to me. Delice smells of dried fruit, vanilla and that caramel buttery-sweetness that made me reach for Shalimar MI. Yummy yet elegant.
I’ve been looking at Delice and waffling…
If there’s any left in stock, it’ll be on sale come January…
Hermès Hiris!
Grateful to my nose to not trust EVERY word in Perfumes The Guide, and to go out and explore for myself.a Favorite-favorite iris!
Good for you!
If I still had any unspoiled Hiris, it would be on my list!
Sampling the new version of A Whiff of Waffle Cone today and am getting metallic maple. 🙁
I didn’t care for the original which I found sharp and synthetic. Now I am 0 for 2. 😉
I don’t know which version I sampled, but it’s definitely a Big 0 for 1 here. All I could smell was synthetic butter flavor. I hate to diss Josh’s perfumes because I’ve met him and he’s a wonderful person, but oof.
Well, no one can score 100%, right? I’ll stick with The Cobra and the Canary. Which I’m sure you would hate, She-ra! 🙃
Maple with tin foil metallic, or maple with burning electrical wires metallic? Either one, ugh! LOL. Money saved!
I didn’t know there was a new version. I got a burnt smell and had to pass on it. Josh gives good customer service and seems very nice. Unfortunately, I only like Fox in the Flowerbed at the moment.
I’ll pass on trying the new one, then. I got a strong burnt smell off the top of the old one.
I actually like the first one, don’t like the second version.
I’m wearing Number One by Patricia de Nicolaï. I’ll be forever grateful to her for creating so many fragrances that I love, Sacrebleu and New York in particular.
I’m also grateful for the sheer audacity that prompted me to buy around 15 to 20 of her fragrances unsniffed, “because I wanted to get a feel for the house” (I bought them in one go as well). And you know what, I don’t regret a single one of those bottles. I actually wear all of them ( and all the others that I bought later). The only one of her older creations that I never tried is Mimosaïque. Did any of you ever get a chance to smell that one?
Wow, that is an impressive unsniffed buy!
I am grateful to her for offering smaller bottles that I can afford and that will still fit (well, sort of) in my perfume drawer.
You’re the official unsniffed blind buy winner! I wish I had access to give her line a sniff. I’ve nixed sample buying, so unless I happen to run across her line somewhere, I’m out of luck. I do have a bottle of her Vetyver which I really enjoy.
If you have an old bottle of the original Vie de Chateau lying around, you better keep it hidden from me, ha!
I do a big one even! I would be more than happy to send you a decant. It’s lovely, isn’t it?
It’s lovely and I do not think the intense version was as good.
And thank you for the very kind offer, but no, I am not collecting any more decants! They spoil before I use them. Was mostly kidding, I did love VdC but I don’t need any more perfume at all, I have enough 🙂
Two days late to reply, but I had Mimosaique and loved it! I think I stupidly swapped away a bottle (either that or Mimosa Pour Moi?) many years ago because I also had a large decant of 20-30ml and thought that was enough to last me. I don’t know what I was thinking. I finished off the large decant two or three years ago. It was a beautiful mimosa perfume. It was somehow dewy, sweet, and powdery with that almond accent of the flower highlighted.
I do still have about 10-15ml of a very old Nicolai called Eau de Lude. I should really wear it more this spring before it suddenly goes bad. It’s a very grassy green floral.
Commando so far, as I forgot to put anything on this morning, and I’m getting a new ear piercing this evening, and don’t want to subject someone that close to me to my olfactory choices.
I’ll do some more sampling tonight. Last night I continued to work through my Laboratorio Olfattivo samples with Nerotic and Tonkade.
Both are very well done, though not for me as they share a wood note I dislike. Despite them containing the “dread-note”, I did not scrub and kept sniffing myself throughout the evening.
These ALMOST made me not hate it. Almost. And I think that is very, very impressive.
Be careful, you’ll get converted!
I wish I could convert! I have a GIANT bottle of Santal Kardamom that I blind bought (🙄) because with those notes… I had to love it, right? But something in it… ick.
But now that we’re discussing it, I’m going to give it another go tonight. Maybe a few years later my nose has changed?
😂 Wish me good luck
Good luck to you!
Commando today because I had to go in to work. At least it was for a good reason — we had a business women’s committee lunch. This reminds me that I am grateful to have a job, as last year at this time my company laid off 5% of the workforce and I suspect my role was deemed superfluous but I managed to get through because there are a couple of very senior people who rely on me. Last year I was wishing they’d just given me a package, but I’m in a much better place this year, having moved into a new department. (Last year at this time, if you’d told me I’d have chosen to work for my current manager, I’d have told you that was insane. But he turned out to be just very frank and very smart.) I am grateful for being in a better place this year.
Happy work is working for you. There’s nothing worse that feeling trapped in a job.
Glad your work situation has improved. It can be really depressing to feel trapped.
It’s true. I got moved into a new role and group last November and hated it as it devalued everything I’d been contributing. Shortly after I got the new role this spring, I was chatting with my former colleague from before the layoffs / restructure, and he was pointing out what a wonderful thing it was to be able to choose your position rather than just having to go where they told you and pretend to be thankful.
My sotd was Demeter Gingerbread. I can’t believe it is almost Thanksgiving. I prefer a late Thanksgiving year. I am trying to talk myself into making Turkey this year.
I can’t believe it either. I was planning on making myself a Cornish Hen for Thanksgiving and forgot to actually BUY the dang thing.😩
Ham is always nice too, and those spiral sliced ones are easy-peasy. Are you cooking for a lot of people or just you and your kids?
I had a day of seeing clients virtually and Mr. Allo is on a work trip which can only mean one thing…Indolic Jasmine aplenty!
I am grateful for the heaviest hitters in my collection: SL Sarrasins, Lush Lust, Perris de Monte Carlo Pays du Jasmin, Rogue Antique Jasmine, AG Songes, Hiram Green Moon Bloom…🌸
And SL A la Nuit!
All this talk of Diptyque, and for the first time in years I drove up to South Coast Plaza partly to go to the Diptyque store. I meant to buy Eau Lente but came home with L’Eau Trois. I still will buy Eau Lente though, when I have more funds. I also discovered that Volutes is NOT discontinued, it is just boutique only now, whew. They had a beautiful boxed set of mini candles that I plan to buy with my Nordstrom gift card. Needless to say I sprayed about 20 different things and that’s my SOTD. 🙂
You smell divine! What a fun outing and L’Eau Trois is such a great choice. I’m on my 2nd bottle and find there’s nothing else quite like it. I prefer it to Trudon’s Mortel, for example. And Eau Lente is beautiful too.
