Happy Friday and happy Mad Hatter day. Our community project for today: wear your silliest perfume, or come up with a silly excuse to wear whatever perfume you wanted to wear anyway.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
My vote for the perfect fragrance for Mad Hatter day: Comme des Garçons + Stephen Jones. I wish I had a bottle, but I don't, and my samples are long gone. So I've gone with the same brand and the same perfumer (Antoine Maisondieu). I'm in Monocle + Comme des Garçons Scent One: Hinoki.
Reminder: on 10/13, we're off to India! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in India, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to India, or that features an Indian ingredient, or ?
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the Wrap Hat by Stephen Jones ("black, hollow/3D oval design, interwoven strands of straw wrap the hat, curved/finished hem, tonal stitching") is $2,829 at H Lorenzo.
Perfect choice indeed, Robin!
I am wearing Memo Winter Palace, mostly because it is a tea scent, but also because it has a bright imagery and a very vivid, fantasy-like description.
So Mr. Chinese Dragon joins the (tea) party.
Excellent.
Oh, I love that perfume. Nice choice
Hello and tgif!
My silly sotd is Lush x Barbie. The scent is pretty silly and fun, literally smells like if a well-stocked Lush shop had exploded.
My poor doggo needs to go to the vet again. She scratched up the inside of her right ear real bad, it’s inflamed with exudate; and the inside of her ears makes a squelching sound as if there’s liquid present…
Tee-hee. The model’s questioning eyebrow made me chuckle.
Oh fun, I should have gone to smell that one.
Very sorry about the doggo!
Aw, hope the vet can help your dog out!
Ouch for doggo’s ear! Hope it heals soon.
I wasn’t feeling silly this morning, but I realized that I have a sample of Masque Milano’s Lost Alice, inspired by Alice’s various adventures in Wonderland, including the Mad Tea Party!
I’m at the office on a rainy day in NYC, sending out greetings to all!
What a perfect choice!
I’m wearing the silliest thing I own, Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Banane. There’s no reason on Earth an adult should want to smell like a handful of banana Runts (the best flavour), but sometimes I do. It’s perfectly ridiculous and delightful, even if the banana note fades fairly quickly, because you’re still left with hours’ worth of that gorgeous CSP vanilla.
Silly good! I love my Vanille Banane. Cheers me up everytime!💛
I considered that for today!
No CP points for me today as my scent today is anything but silly.
SOTD is FM Une Rose. Absolutely stunning.
Yup! You smell great!
Gorgeous!
Twins! Zero CP points for us 😀
Hey twin!
Such a lovely perfume!
I am in day five of tea scents and I’m wearing The Time by THoO. I’ve got a few more tea scents pulled that I think I will wear over the long weekend, and then it’s on to something else.
I have black tea ☕️ in my SOTD
Lots of chores yesterday in temps that got much hotter than predicted. Grrr!
But, while waiting in line for propane, I struck up a convo with guy behind me. Anyway, learned that he was leaving this morning to fly to Miami and thence on to South America and THEN cruising for three weeks on the AMAZON RIVER! How cool is that! He was born and raised in Santa Fe so he had some great stories! We waited quite a while and it was the best line I ever waited in. 😀
Anyway, I’m copy-catting Pyramus above and wearing CSP Vanille Banane because it’s joyfully silly. We are buzzing up to Taos today so I can pick up mail and then we will continue north for cooler temps. We’ll come back this way when it’s cooler and less crowded. I’d like to see Santa Fe when it’s all gussied up for the holidays. 🎄
Happy friYAY!
BTW, I’m not sure that hat is jiving with the reality of physics. Seems impossible to keep that balanced not to mention actually ON your head…but hey, it’s $3000 well spent, right? 😂
It all depends on how it is weighted. The crown of the hat does not fit snugly to the head; there is a good deal of extra volume in it. If there is enough counterbalancing mass in the narrower side, the hat may in fact be perfectly balanced. Straw is lightweight, so it would not take a whole lot to do the job. All the same, I can’t imaging wearing that, never mind paying almost $3000 for it.
I so miss the Taos area! My dad lived in Arroyo Seco, just outside of Taos, for years. It’s lovely up there.
You really meet some interesting ( good) people in your travels.
Great story, thanks for sharing and letting us live vicariously through your adventures!
I’m continuing with my vintage week in R&G Blue Carnation. Not a silly fragrance, but the name is, if not exactly silly, at least fanciful. After all, there is no such thing in nature as a blue carnation.
Good enough for points!
I’m wearing Wazamba for the silly reason that it’s just fun to say. But it doesn’t smell silly, it’s perfect for our first day of temps in the 50s.
That’s perfect.
I always read Wazamba like Kathy Bates says Tawanda! In Fried Green Tomatoes. Lol.
Lol I love that scene 🙂
I always say Wazamba in imitation of James Earl Jones 😂
I always hear Animal from the Muppets saying Wazamba and then panting heavily.
In Blackbird Y06-S. A silly and difficult name to remember, but a fun and delicious banana scent that I always enjoy wearing.
Having my second cup of coffee and eagerly waiting for the long holiday weekend.
Happy Friday! ☕️
I love that one – you smell great!
2nd that 🙂
Thank you, Allo! It is a unique scent!
Enjoy your long weekend!
Thank you, Lillyjo!
Enjoy your long weekend!
I looked up your SOTD after reading your post earlier today. Went to the Blackbird website and everything.
Gris Charnel
I have been so busy at the library as they just installed a new Shelly exhibit and I have been studying 📖 📑 and reading up.
Forever a student ..
We should all be forever a student 🙂
I’m in Mancera Tonka Cola, which maybe isn’t silly but certainly is fun.
A good cola scent is extremely fun, especially if it gets the carbonation feeling right.

I’m wearing my silliest named perfume. Sexy Rio De Janeiro! Lol. I hate this name so much but if you like BWF it smells great!
Cool but sunny today. I will take it!
LOL to that name 😀
It’s ridiculous!
Ack! I hate the name too!
At least you enjoy how it smells.
It’s awful! I have used up about half of my 100ml bottle. It has worked for many community projects.
Wearing Clinique Happy today. The name is a little silly and the perfume smells frivolous.
Perfect then!
I’m back to ELdO in Eau de Protection. The name makes me laugh and the roses make me smile😊
That is what I was going to wear for the CP today, but it is right next to the Une Rose and that’s what I grabbed. I am sure it’s just me, but it reminded me a little of Eau de Protection.
I can definitely smell that connection.
I should have said that the collaboration with Rossy de Palma on Eau de Protection just adds to the silly quotient. Women On the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown is one of my favorite films.
That was such a great movie!
I always picture her looking crazed on a scooter.
Mine, too. I always think of it when I make gazpacho. Because how could I not?
You smell fantastic today. Eau de Protection is such a great dark rose.
Truly, a great dark rose🌹
I chose Dior Cuir Cannage for the CP, and here’s the rationale: it’s maddeningly silly that they discontinued it, it’s irritatingly silly how much online sellers want for the few available bottles, and it’s crazy silly how much I love it.
P.S. Today’s hat — wowza.
That is perfect! It is maddeningly silly! You smell great.
I took a deep dive into the archives for the CP and came up with….
DINNER by bobo
so many points for me.
(also it is *very* strong, sweet, spicy, and autumn suitable.)
I should add that I love the hat!
Great choice! I remember Dinner by Bobo had such the buzz when I first went down the fragrance rabbit hole, who could forget that name?!
Yes, it definitely had a moment back in the day. And then it was gone…
SO many points!
That’s the best hat of the week! I went with What We Do In Paris Is Secret today, partly because I was in the mood for its sweet frivolous yumminess, and partly because — other than Alan Cumming’s eponymous offerings — it’s the fragrance in my collection that I’d be most likely to giggle about while telling someone what I’m wearing.
Have you ever had the chance to tell someone a particularly odd perfume name?
I *have* had to explain about Cumming – The Fragrance, along with the concepts behind a few CB fragrance names. But mostly no one asks what I’m wearing; at most I’ll just get a “you smell good!”
Such a great scent!
SOTD = Bvlgari Black
Silly bottle and silly perfume, quite unexpected! And how about that macaron plushie keychain / ornament?!? The box too is unusual in that the space-filler protective inside packaging opens up from the side along the short end instead of on the long edge where most other boxes have them. 😍

I don’t recall if I mentioned but last Friday, my friend and her brother and I went to an Indian restaurant for lunch. We were all not enamored with hot-spicy food but we heard the restaurant was good. We got to talking about what’s on the bucket list for travel. I admitted to not having a hankering for traveling to India, or a safari and even to places with beautiful temples. Anyway, I will live vicariously through those who have travelled there and through my perfumes for next week!
I reallllly recommend African safaris. I went to Kenya to witness the animal migration. Open top jeep, binoculars, big cameras, the whole lot. Elephant herds, lion prides, giraffes, wildebeest, etc. One of the best trips I ever went on!
Seconding the wonders of a safari. Africa is just astounding, and my tiger safari in India was a very close runner-up. It’s amazing to see the animals in the wild.
Kind of surprised to hear that you went to an Indian restaurant, given that I know you don’t like hot/spicy and cumin in food. Was there anything at all that you liked, or was it a total miss?
I share in not having a hankering for those places. I don’t have a travel bug anyway though.
That hat! It’s giving me ottoman vibes. Only silly thing about my sotd, Apres l’Ondee, is that it’s taken me so long to give it a go. Ordered a sample, since it’s impossible to find at dept stores. I like it, as I’m wont to go for iris/heliotrope combos. Wish I could try the vintage, but seems HTF and $$$.
Apres l’Ondee is a wistful beauty.
I had a very long and tiring day today, very pleasant as well so I’m not complaining. I wanted something pleasant but unobtrusive and I chose L’Esprit libre.
Well, I suppose a free spirit would be just what you need to carry off all those mad and silly perfumes 🙂 .
I have many candidates for silly fragrances but I’m going with a silly name today: La Petite Robe Noir Black Perfecto Eau de Parfum Florale. That’s a lot of information stuffed into a name. And isn’t including both “noir” and “black” redundant?
Perfecto parfait perfect choice!
To paraphrase Mad Hatter from the recent Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland movie, that’s just too much muchness.
That is a spectacularly silly name.
Also, how on earth can a garment be at the same time a Little Black Dress and a leather jacket ???
The name of your SOTD would also be a winner for a “Word Salad” community project. It’s a crazy one!
Love that scent!
If I had any, I’d wear Ummagumma cuz that’s the goofiest name I can think of, but instead it’s Rodin Bis from a swap here (the second offering from the Olio Lusso people, & the nose is one of the D.S. Durga people). It’s an herbal anisic cool colognely thing.
Awhile back, some kind person here sent me the third one (Rodin 3) which I really liked (a crisp green carnation-edged cologney thing, very unisex), so I was interested in trying the second one. The first Olio Lusso frag which I think was just called Olio Lusso, was beautiful but too much big white florals for me.
I’m really enjoying exploring my Swapmeet haul. Thanks to all of you who swapped with me.
It’s a shame Rodin went under, but now I can’t remember if the perfumes are still available or not?
Glad the swapmeet was fun.
Smell Bent Brussels Sprouted which has a nice earthy, hands in the soil smell rather than the less appealing boiled sprout scent of childhood. As a child I was always tasked with cutting neat crosses into the stem of the brussel sprouts before cooking and I still do it, and it always makes me think of my granny and my mother when I do. Kind of nice how these mundane, everyday domestic tasks are embedded in family history and memories. By the way, I loved yesterday’s fake fur trapper hat and would happily wear it in winter. Have a happy day.
I have to look this one up. I love soil, earth and dirt scents. Great name, too!
Brilliant – when I thought of what to wear for today, I completely forgot about Smell Bent, but of course that IS a brand famed for its tongue-in-cheek or even silly names.
Smell Bent is another great pick for this CP!
I’m wearing Oranges and Lemons Say the Bells of St. Clement’s by Heeley. Silly name, based on a nursery rhyme, but the fragrance itself is a nice reinterpretation of a traditional Eau de Cologne with beautiful citrus notes and vetiver base. For all his eccentric trappings, I think Mad Hatter would appreciate such a classic, well rounded scent. I only have a small sample of it, which I got from a recent LuckyScent purchase; smelling it makes me happy, but it’s a very fleeting and expensive scent. I would love a small bottle but as it is, it’s just on my wish list.
Great call!
I’m wearing Coromandel today. Nothing silly about it, except that it might be a silly choice for me because it’s going to get up to 90 degrees today. Welp, I was just really craving Coromandel this morning!
I get you, craving a certain scent!See below what my cravings lead to this morning!🤣🤣✌🏻
I’m not really convinced that mad and silly are the same thing … but be that as it may, I’m in “La dompteuse encagée”, not only for its paradoxical title, but also for Serge Lutens’ blurbs that really do seem worthy of a Mad Hatter. In this case, citing from the SL website, it’s:
“I cannot disavow this cold, whitepowdered girl. Nonetheless, I sense the snow – so dreaded because expected – the coming avalanche. After what the whiteness of the flower has seen, freshness is beyond augur, but the scent of frangipani softens the blow.”
Mad indeed!
Yeah, almost sounds like a game of Cadavre Exquis, doesn’t it?
I think SL must have one of those text generator programs for his blurbs, like the famous Postmodernism Generator.
Mad and silly are not the same thing, but Mad Hatter day is silly.
You definitely have a point 🙂 !
Trying Dolce & Gabbana Devotion today. Notes are candied citrus, orange blossom and vanilla. Nose is Olivier Cresp.
The opening reminds me a bit of And The World Is Yours…lots of citrus and orange blossom so far. Vanilla is my spirit animal. 🐺
I tried this and liked it. It reminded me of something too, but I couldn’t place it. I will try it again with your view in mind.
Sounds worthy of a sniff!
I had thought I might wear Red Queen or White Queen for Mad Hatter Friday, but instead I’m going with ELdO’s Vraie Blonde. It reminds me of Jayne Mansfield, who was very silly in her best-known movie, “Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?”: https://scentsandsensibilities.co/2019/03/24/scent-sample-sunday-vraie-blonde/
Vraie Blonde has been a shapeshifter on my skin, from being lush and suede-ey to outright nauseating!
I wear with caution.🤣🤣🤗🌹
IIRC, Red Queen was a lovely rose fragrance.
Yes, it is! And I’m very fond of White Queen also. It was my first 4160 Tuesdays fragrance. Talk about going down a rabbit-hole!
Well silly me thought I could wear the last dregs from a sample of one of my favorite perfume discoveries of 2023 and then simply just forget about it…FORGET ABOUT THAT!Wearing it today reminded me how absolutely delightful it is,so of course I had to rush “somewhere” to buy a bottle.Skins cosmetics had one last 30mls availaibleand it is now MINE!haha!
Ganymede,you luscious marvelously gorgeous perfume!
Happy Friday everyone!Loving some of the oddball choices!
XO’s🌹🌹✌🏻
Yay! Happy Friday!
Same to you!🤗🤗
Glad that the perfume gods were on your side. Happy Friday indeed!
I love it when a sample was NOT a disappointment!🤣🤣✌🏻
Ha! I am sure you smell fabulous! Is Skins like a Sephora?
I think so,although Skins mainly dabble in “niche” brands. They also have the Jonathan Adler range of decor items which I absolutely adore,Assouline books and the Byredo makeup line. But mostly perfumes perfumes perfumes!🤗🌹
I’m joining Sheri in Cuir Cannage. Happy Friday!
Happy Friday!
Warm and cloudy today. Not as muggy as recent days, so that’s a step in the right direction.
That hat reminds me of the headdress that Whoopi Goldberg wore on ST:TNG as Guinan.
I had a great customer service interaction with someone earlier at a local Fed Ex outpost. I was sending out several packages at one, and some of them were bulky. Very friendly and helpful person who, as a bonus, smelled great. (It was a vanilla-based scent, possibly Angel.) She brought out a hand cart and helped me move all the packages inside.
SOTD = commando today. Not feeling perfume lately, which is a shame. Still wearing the scented lotions and body butters, though.
Great customer service is like gold now! Did they have a survey you can do?
No. But I did make it a point to tell the person how much I appreciated her help before I left.
I thought of you during the interaction.
For today’s cp, I chose Dame Perfumery ‘Chilihead’ for the visuals it brings to mind – various people, some famous, some not, walking around with large or small (or even shriveled!) heads that could be red, could be yellow, could be green chili peppers. How silly is that? The scent itself is composed of more notes than I can count, but is warm, nicely spicey yet green and earthy. I like it very much, and it’s perfect for the first chilly day we’ve had this fall – which I also like very much!
A very busy, fun day today: a morning yoga class followed by a whole bunch of errands. A trip to Petsmart for a supply of food for our ‘employers,’ 😻😻😻, a stop at BBW to sniff the new Luminous – I like it, especially its ‘redness,’ and I got a free hand cream in its scent. A trip to the Botanic Garden for the bulb sale – bought wayyy too many! – and finished off the afternoon with an early Friday night fish fry at a cozy Irish pub on the way home and a Harp’s 🍺
Last weekend’s Peter Gabriel concert was awesome, as was our stay in Milwaukee and experiences exploring its delightful Riverwalk. Tomorrow night we’re headed out to see another of our favorite former Chicago-area musicians before he heads back to Colorado where he moved early this year. Luckily he’s spent some time here recently and we’ve been able to catch him. Jim Green plays a unique style of percussive, finger-style guitar and is a creative composer as well. Here’s a link to a brief sample of his haunting, soothing and hypnotic style:
https://youtube.com/shorts/xWi3TjfpF84?si=D8rQbybXgEtEK-IS
Wishing everyone a lovely weekend ahead!🎶
What a perfect SOTD! Speaking of percussive guitar, have you ever heard Stanley Jordan play? He’s incredible. https://mim.org/events/stanley-jordan-jul-23-2023/
No, I wasn’t familiar with Stanley Jordan so thank you very much for the info. Very cool!
