Saturday is the last day of September (don't forget the swapmeet is still open!); Sunday is the first day of October (don't forget your rabbits, and start adding up those receipts because Donatella will be dropping by on Tuesday).
We're marking the changing of the month with our routine open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance you're falling out of love with, whatever.
Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

I’ve been testing out the Phlur sample pack that arrived a few days ago. I have tried all 10 and have not outright hated any of them, although a couple of them are definitely not “me”. I do find most of them rather soft and not very long lasting. That may be simply that I did not spray enough; the sprayers of the sample vials are a bit fiddly to operate and rather stingy in their application, so I probably should use more sprays than I am used to (that is, three sprays from one of these sample vials is not the same as three sprays from any of my FBs) . My brief takes on them:
Ameline–nice balanced rose-forward scent. Neither too sweet nor too sour. Marketed as a modern rose and “not your mother’s rose” but smells quite classic to me.
Apricot Privee–Apricot over a bitter, woody, resinous base. Reminds me a bit of Mitsouko, and like Mitsouko, not my cup of tea.
Father Figure–just spritzed this one on now. Difficult for me to describe. They call it a green fragrance, but I find it much less sharp than most greens. I keep leaning in to sniff it, so so far so good.
Lost Cause–woody floral, leans masculine to my nose.
Missing Person–very soft, “skin scent”, seems to disappear quickly on me. I don’t know if I just need to spray more, or if I may be anosmic to part of it. What I can smell of it, I like very much.
Not Your Baby–OK, I’m not crazy about the name, but this is one of my favorites of the lot. A sweet (but not TOO sweet) floral. It has neither the suffocating effect typical of most white florals, nor the icepick-to-the-sinuses effect of so many “fresh” florals.
Phloria–my least favorite so far. They claim that it is a white floral for those who think they don’t like white florals, but I beg to differ; I don’t like white florals, and this one is no exception. If you DO like white florals, this one is worth trying.
Solar Power–Orange blossom with orange. Very nice.
Somebody Wood–pleasant woody scent, leans masculine to my nose. Thinking of getting this for DH.
Tangerine Boy–Another name I don’t like for a perfume I do like. Opens with tangerine, then more tangerine, then finally a woody base emerges, with the tangerine still apparent.
I will undoubtedly pass along my samples of Phloria and Apricot Privee, as I am already certain I do not care for them. The rest require further testing to determine if they are FBW for either me or DH.
Looking forward to next week’s CP, I am wondering if a perfume with a silly name would be good enough? I don’t think I have any silly perfumes, and I’m not even sure what a silly perfume is, but silly names abound, including several in the Phlur range.
Sample packs are so much fun!
The names are definitely unusual.
Thanks for your reviews. I have also quickly checked the notes on Fragrantica. Solar Power, Phloria and Tangerine Boy attract me the most.
I think a silly perfume can definitely be a perfume with a silly name!
Thanks for the reviews, I’ve not smelled anything from the line.
I had been ignoring this line because I expected it to be like some other brands I have tried that tout how (choose one of more from: safe, clean, renewable, ethically sourced, Fair Trade, hypoallergenic, vegan) they are but which seem to have forgotten that the first requirement for a successful perfume is that it needs to smell good–really good, not just OK. It must make you want to smell of it. You want to put it on your body and carry the scent around with you for hours. You want to keep smelling it over and over throughout the day. I am finding a number of the Phlur fragrances fulfill that requirement for me very well. I also like that they offer everything in a 9.5 mL travel spray, in addition to 50 mL FBs. I seldom want to buy 50 mL (or worse, 100 mL) of anything these days.
I’m with you on the size requirements. If only everything came in a 10ml travel spray. Not a roller ball. A spray. Then I would be like a kid in a candy shop. Phlur is not a brand that ever appealed to me, but at this point I’m like, no big deal, I don’t need any more perfume, so no need to explore brands that are hyped in Social Media. If I do find the need to buy, I’ll go with a brand I know works for me.
I really liked Not your baby, and almost bought the travel spray. In the end, though I did not like it more than I hated the name.
Who’s is in charge of naming these perfumes?! I mean come ON! So ridiculous!
Not all the names are ridiculous–Ameline is a woman’s name. I don’t think Solar Power is any sillier than many other perfume names. Their Fragrantica entry indicates that they had some earlier (presumably discontinued) scents with pretty normal names. Apparently they got a new owner/creative director a couple of years ago. I guess the former owner preferred “regular” perfume names, and it is the current owner responsible for the rather odd names of their more recent launches.
Oh, I didn’t mean this brand in particular. I was referring to all perfumes with crazy names that are just ridiculous and sexually oriented. Does sex REALLY sell? Are we that susceptible to innuendo and straight up trash talk? Not just in the perfume industry, but the entire beauty industry. Do we really need a blush named “orgasm?” I mean, I’m just so over all the nonsense names. 🙄 I don’t think I’m a prude and if you want to talk trashy in the bedroom, go for it. But do we really need fragrances, makeup and body products to be trashy? Is this considered titillating or something? (Wink wink snicker snicker) IMO it’s just bad taste. Off my soap box now! 😀
You could always make your own label with the name of your choice, and paste it over the label supplied with the bottle. Or just make up a name you like in case anybody asks you what you are wearing.
I have actually thought of doing that as well.
Thank you for the reviews, I see a lot of mentions of Phlur, and have been curious. I agree with your comment about the focus on safe, clean, etc. They are valid considerations, but I have to like how it smells
Thank you for the review! I was wondering how the new iterations were. I tried these under the old names, liked a couple enough to buy bottles, then returned them to Sephora because of the overall performance (very light and disappeared after an hour or so). I like skin scents and lighter scents, but these just kind of vanished. I do agree they’re more interesting than most “clean” fragrances, but just a warning that I don’t think the lackluster sample spritzers are to blame for the quick fading. :-/
I find some of them better lasting than others. Missing Person does indeed seem to go missing pretty fast on me. My least favorite, Phloria, was quite tenacious. I wanted to scrub it off in order to test something else, but it would not leave.
Thanks for the review!
I looked up the perfumes immediately.
I saw that some people compared Apricot Privee to Tom Ford’s Bitter Peach. Do they smell similar? I have BP and love it but if they are too similar then getting Apricot might be redundant…
I have not smelled Bitter Peach, so I could not say.
If it’s possible, I am even more curious now. 😂
Whoever came up with the idea of perfume sample sets was a freaking genius.
Happy weekend!
Sotd is Zoologist Harvest Mouse. A soft, gentle and comforting hay scent.
I just ordered Zara and Olivia Giacobetti’s Blanc Ensoleille. This one with the coconut, milky and salty note sounds up my alley. Hopefully it’s a successful blind buy!
I feel lucky that I still love all my perfumes. ❤️
Happy weekend to you too!
I really like Harvest Mouse.
Moving at the speed of a glacier this AM. Back from Scotland several days early. Slipped on a wet cobblestone on day 1 of our vacay and put several fractures in my arm (proximal humerus fractures). After a crazy ambulance ride and a night in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary I was well-armed with copious amounts of painkillers. With breaks and rests, we did a lovely road trip up to and around Skye. Sadly, I was feeling worse and worse and we decided the Outer Hebrides would be too much. Home now, COVID positive, and escaping into a doorstop-sized mystery book.
Yah well.
In perfume news. On the way to the UK I tried on a few perfumes in the duty free shop. On the return trip I picked up a bottle of Dior’s Santal Noir. Accessible and pretty, it could be a Chanel. I’m very pleased with it 💕
I have been wondering where you have been. I am sorry you fell and are sick.
Oh my! Wow 😮
OF, I am so sorry. The exact same thing happened to me years back, and fortunately my doctor recommended a Dexa scan which showed osteoporosis. Bones are not supposed to break from a standing fall. I hope you heal quickly!
You are right of course. I probably need a scan. Grrrrr. I shared your comment with my husband who promptly ordered a book on osteoporosis online 🙄
How awful! I’m glad that it didn’t entirely ruin your vacation. I’ve never been to Scotland nd lots of people tell me it’s beautiful. In spite of your decidedly less-than-wonderful time, would you recommend a vacation there?
That Dior sounds very nice.
Yes. I was there in the 20-teens as part of a Holland America cruise. We were there to watch the Military Tatoo. My sister and my brother-in-law are going next week and I’m sure they will tell me all about it.
Thanks, hajusuuri.
Scotland is a beautiful country and the people are very welcoming. We planned a road trip, which is a great way to see different parts of the country. For such a small country, the landscape and architecture varies widely. You have English, Gaelic, and Nordic influences. I loved it.
Thanks! It does sound like I will need to do further research.
Hoping your Covid does a swift vamoose!
I’m sorry to hear about your holiday troubles, what a shame. I’m you got to enjoy some of it despite your arm.
OF, I am so very sorry all of that is happening! At least you got to enjoy what you could. Hope you recover quickly.
Oh dear, I’m so very sorry! Hope the covid will be mild and the mystery engrossing.
Sorry to hear about your fall! Sounds like you made the best of it, and I hope the Covid ends up being very mild.
You’ve inspired me to dig out my Santal Noir mini.
I usually ignore the Diors— the bottles are so huge. But I had sprayed various perfumes on sample cards, and kept coming back to Noir Santal. When I bought it, the clerk tried to convince me to buy the 8 oz bottle. When I declined, he went to my husband to explain that it was better value for money. (My husband, wisely, responded with just a polite nod 🤣) Goodness! It looks like SN is discontinued, at least in the US.
Which duty free did you find this at? It does seem to be discontinued.
Oddly, it was available and being promoted at SFO and Heathrow, at multiple Dior counters— wherever they were selling their Collection Privee. I only found it was impossible to purchase online in the US after I got home and looked it up.
Ouch. I hope you heal quickly and Covid disappears as quickly as it appeared.
Ugh…I am so sorry to hear this. Sending you big hugs. Hope you heal quickly and feel better soon.
I am so sorry about all that’s happened! Get well soon.
At least you could still sort of enjoy what was remained of your trip.
I have never been to Scotland but my friend from Glasglow told me it’s stunning. (And I also find Scottish accent to be very adorable).
Oh poor you! Glad you are home safe. Wishing you a speedy and complete recovery!
Oh, no, what a disappointment! I hope you are recovering (and good idea about the scan).
ZOMG! So sorry to hear about your arm and getting COVID as a nasty bonus. Definitely a good idea to get a bone scan after all that.
At least you were able to salvage some of your vacation plans.
I either have fall allergies kicking up, or a sinus infection, plus my ear hurts. Yes, I’ll take some cheese with that whine. I’d whimper in self-pity but my throat hurts too lol.
So I’m wearing Paloma Picasso because I was craving bitter green and she is very both of those things, yet the drydown becomes a lovely soft green floral.
Good day for a movie. I’m thinking of Shockproof, a noir I’ve never seen.
Sorry for all those health troubles🤒, hope everything will brighten up soon🌻. On the other hand you smell spectacular, I have PP too, a little 30ml vintage, I admire this perfume so much but it will last me a lifetime because I seldom have the right state of mind to wear it.
I need to get a craving, definitely not an everyday perfume.
I hope you’re feeling better soon, at least you can still smell your perfume.
Yes although I smelled kind of a cat urine note right after spraying and thought “uh, oh” but it disappeared. Otherwise, it takes a shower to remove PP.
Hope you feel better soon, ringthing.
I feel like the changing of the seasons kicks up allergies…I have been sneezing a lot in the morning.
Feel better soon! Enjoy your movie 🙂
Hope you feel better soon! I’m in the mood for dark and bitter too.
Hope that you shake off your health woes soon!
I am back from my vacation early because lots of unfortunate things happened.
First our car was stolen when we were away, our new car actually. Second my mom was hospitalized and then my father in law had a heart attack , that was the last drop that made us change our plans and come back home early.
I think I need another vacation just to recover from all of that.
I discovered some new perfumes while I was away though. Voskanian had a new perfume, histoire d’une rose which is very beautiful. I had the pleasure to meet with the perfumer Tsovak. I also loved his Iris Boisé.
Oh my gosh! I hope your Mom and FiL recovery quickly and that you don’t have too much trouble getting your car or another car.
That’s a lot of unfortunate events. Hope your mother and FiL feel better soon.
Oh wow.. that is a lot happening 😳
Hope your week is better, and things look up
Sharing in your “back from vacation early”. My heart really goes out to you having the worries of family members’ health, and your car all come long as you tried to sally forth—yeesh! Hope everyone is doing okay.
Here’s to next time, eh?
I plan to investigate Voskanian, with which I am not familiar. 😊
I should say you need another vacation after all that! I hope your mom and FIL recover well.
I hope you can start planning another holiday soon, after all that. I hope your mother and father-in-law are OK.
Oh Hera, what a lot for life to shove on you all at once. I hope your mother and fil recover quickly, and just for the happiest resolution of everything. Take care of yourself.
Sorry to hear your vacation was ruined, you do need another! I hope the two parents are doing better.
Hera, so sorry! Hope your mom & FIL are recovering? Hope insurance is going to get you a new car?
Oh my goodness, Hera. That is alot of things to be dealing with! I hope your mom and father-in-law are doing OK.
Sending you big hugs, Hera. Hope your mom and FIL recover quickly.
Everything that happened is horrible! I hope you get to have a new car and that your mum and FiL will be alright soon.
I am so sorry to hear about all that. If you’d like to meet up this week to commiserate and sniff, let me know. I’m going to have to leave Montréal earlier than planned because my mother has been hospitalised as well.
Yuck, I am so sorry. I hope the parents recover quickly and that your car is returned or replaced. Between your story and Oakland Fresca’s, I may actually be glad I am not on vacation right now!
Oh no! What a terrible streak of things to happen!
Sending “Get Well” wishes for your FIL and Mom. And crossing fingers that your car situation gets resolved.
IRIS TORRÉFIÉ!
In all caps since I love this sample
NICE!
You smell fabulous!
I love Iris Torrifee too! Is this your first time sampling it?
Yes
Your comment made me go look for my sample. It does smell amazing!
You smell(ed) great. Love Iris Torréfié.
My first time sampling and I am really enjoying
PG Indochine on a cool morning which will heat up quite a bit as the day progresses.
I was headed Santa Fe way on Monday but the weather is looking very inauspicious with significant wind and rain, so I’m not sure how this will play out. I have to get to Taos and Santa Fe sometime this week or my mail will be sent back. I may stay a couple extra days here and wait for the weather to pass. Good news is, it will supposedly be much cooler after this passes.
Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!
Indochine is lovely, isn’t it.
It is! My bottle is getting dangerously low…
I do miss that bit of NM, so I hope you get there! But safely of course.
I’m pretty careful with the weather as I travel. Although this rig handles so much better than my van in high winds, I still prefer to not travel on those types of days. We’ll sit still and just let it pass on by. This is a lovely area and I can’t wait for this heat to break!
I was worried about you with the impending Federal Government shutdown but I figured if you were worried, you probably would have mentioned something. Be safe.
Well, worst case scenario, they shut down all the state parks, but there are plenty of other options, including boon-docking, so it really won’t affect me much if it happens. Others will not be so lucky, of course. It will impact a lot of people in a very negative way. Let’s hope our politicians can get it together and avoid a shutdown.
Keep the shiny side up and the greasy side down!
I found a decant of Montale Intense Tiare in the perfume detritus on top of the cabinet, so that’s what I’m wearing today. It’s a brilliantly sunny day here and I should do some outdoor chores but I am not motivated. I am halfway through The Running Grave and Robin (the character in the book) is in a dangerous situation.
No spoilers, please! 😯 I’ve been reading it as well, and it sounds as if you’re further along in the story.
I’ve devoured every one of the books in this series, and the television adaptation is quite good! Casting was spot-on.
p.s. how are you liking the Montale?
I do like the Montale. One tiny spray in my cleavage and it has been wafting up all morning. I’ve been looking for a tiare scent and this and CSP Aloha Tiare are the ones I see most mentioned. I might buy this.
OTOH, Fragrancebuy.ca has CSP Aloha Tiare 30ml testers for ~$19, so I bought one. I will compare it to the Montale decant when it arrives.
Nice. Let me know if you ever want to split off some. 😉
I love Aloha Tiaré.
Well, I actually thunked a bottle! I squeezed the last drops out of my bottle of Cabochard. It was a 30ml bottle that I bought around 30 years ago, so that doesn’t bode well for using up much of my collection in my lifetime. And I have a 100ml BUB that I bought a couple of years ago 🙂
Today has dawned sunny and still after days of wind and rain, so I’m thinking about spring favourite Le Temps d’une Fête.
Congratulations on the thunk! Le Temps d’une Fete is wonderful stuff.
You’re a true perfumista with that 100ml BUB! I love it!
reminds me that i should wear my vintage bottle more, but still a thunk, congrats
Hmm, let’s see, that comes to about 1ml per year usage. Sounds about right! 😁 I don’t know about you, but at the rate I have collected bottles, decants, and samples, I don’t find it surprising. Nice thunk!
SOTD = Papillon Perfumes Spell 125
Very nice one indeed. I am too lazy to post a picture and so I won’t.
In other news, my friend with pancreatic cancer has been back in her Florida home for almost two weeks. My sister had seen her briefly on Zoom (rosary) and she said she looks good and sounds stronger (although it could be the vagaries of mobile devices and wireless connectivity). We’ll hopefully hear more updates within the next few weeks!
i know we’re not supposed to mention it but if this is against the rules, please delete this comment.
I posted an additional 7 items in the swapmeet. I think some will be of interest!
I’m glad your friend was able to return home. Hopefully she is doing better.
Good to hear that your friend is back at her home and doing well.
Givenchy III today, i am a bit limited in my choices because i am on holidays in Narbonne, south of france. Still was a good choice for the 33C we had today…
Tested a perfume from an indie perfumer in Narbonne called 60s, a pepper and labdanum/incense laden old school chypre. I might buy a smallish bottle, this should be great, when it gets cold. Today we will do a biketour along the Canal de Robine, because will be hopefully not as hot as today.
There is a really beautiful abbey near Narbonne called Fontfroide. Well worth a visit.
I decided to test out one of my Phlur samples more in-depth, so I am wearing Ameline (neck, cleavage, both arms, hair). With a bigger application, it does smell a bit less conventional, which I guess is the “modern” vibe they claim for it. I also get a rather odd scent association; I leaned in to sniff it more deeply, and all of a sudden I thought of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In my mind, I saw myself walking around the museum wearing this perfume. I assume something in it smells like the museum in some way, but I don’t know exactly what.
That is really cool your SOTD brought up a scent memory!
I thought I was hallucinating when I saw that picture. I took one almost exactly like it on Thursday.
I’m back home after a long drive, fortunately only the last bit was busy.
I told you I was googling the towns on your itinerary 🙂
Sorry your vacation is over!
Glad to hear that you are back home safe.
Still here in Montréal and enjoying beautiful fall weather, although unfortunately not for much longer as my mother who is in end-stage Parkinson’s has been hospitalized with multiple infections. Waiting to book my return ticket because my husband and his son both came home from Germany with covid and I can’t return to San Diego until they have tested negative, because if I get back and catch covid I definitely won’t be able to see my mom. Sigh.
I am rarely in the mood for a bitter green fragrance but today I’m wearing De Profundis. It seemed appropriate.
Oh cazaubon I am sorry to hear about your Mother’s poor health.
I hope you can get back to see her soon.
So sad for you about your mother, hoping you will be able to see her soon and that you don’t catch covid.
Oh cazaubon, I hope you stay healthy and for the best outcome for your mother. Hopefully you can see her soon.
I’m so sorry Cazaubon, my mother also has Parkinson’s disease, not end-stage though.
I hope you will be able to visit your mum as quickly as possible.
Thank you and sending my best wishes for your mom’s health as well.
I’m so sorry for the difficult time that you and your family are going through. I hope your guys recover quickly, and that you stay well and get to visit your mom.
Very sorry to hear about your Mom’s declining health. Parkinson’s is a bear to deal with. Hope you get to see her soon. Be safe, and be well.
So sorry about your mom’s rapidly declining health. I hope you get to see her soon.
I’m so sorry about your mom. I hope you will be able to see her soon.
I am so sorry about your mom.

Tobacco Honey from a sample
Perfect for autumn 🍂
It certainly sounds it!
I did not take my own advice — I totally forgot the rabbits.
Asking my annual, wistful Yves Rocher question: has anyone sniffed the holiday LE items One is Voile Dore and the other might be an almond thingie.
Voile Dore is the perfume, Infusion d’Épices & Litchi Givré are the two scents in body products & candles, plus there are also a few items in Karité & Douceur d’Amandes.
But I have not smelled any so no help!
Looking forward to the splitmeet coming up. Has anyone tried this type of atomizer that can take directly from the perfume bottle?

Beautiful breezy day here so far! I extended by two days so I don’t have to deal with the inclement weather that is predicted tomorrow and possibly Tuesday. We’ll change sites tomorrow to a lakeside spot, which will be nice.
SOTD is CSP Vanille Banane from a travel spray set. I really enjoy this not too serious perfume. It’s fun and friendly and inoffensive and with todays fluctuating weather, it works perfect.
🐇🐇🐇 Rabbits, which I didn’t remember until I hopped on the internet and saw the date. Better late than never! Also the day for the Baby T-Rex to have nails clipped, ears cleaned, and her heart worm/flea/tick medication which she gets as a treato after I do nails and ears.
Eke out the last bit of weekend joy while you can. Monday’s rolling around quickly!
I loved the photo you put on your Instagram account of the Betatakin Overlook. I took a similar picture in 1992!
Ha, yeah, nothing changes too much there. They had a 5 hour ranger led hike that took you quite close to the ruins, but it was rained out. I would have really loved to get close enough to see the petroglyphs that are just to the right of ruins on the wall. Do you remember if you were able to see those when you visited? Honestly, I’m not exploring too much because of the heat. When it cools down a bit I’ll be more inclined to get off the beaten path. Thankfully, gas is about .50 cheaper here than the PNW. Right now we’re sitting still at a NM state park for $4 a day. Can’t beat it! Great views, showers, water, electricity, gorgeous sunsets, peace and (mostly) quiet… ❤️
I didn’t get down close to the ruins so I didn’t see the petroglyphs. I remember we were the only people there at the time. It was in March, I believe.
Forgot my rabbits this morning but that’s not unusual. Getting together with a friend tonight to try put a new pizza place. It’s a little more upscale than what we normally do. Wearing a whopping dose of Lyric today.
You smell powerfully lovely!
I’m wearing Amarige Harvest Mimosa and doing laundry, then picking up a hold at the library. I finished The Running Grave yesterday.
Laundry twins. It never ends, does it? Actually, most of the time I don’t mind it, because it’s a great way to accomplish something with very little effort. 😁
I hope you enjoyed reading The Running Grave. I’m not very far along, but I feel myself almost not wanting to keep on with it, because I know that it will be very, very dark for Robin. But I know I will, because the writing is so good!
With any book, when the action gets too intense, I take little breaks.
I think The Running Grave is my third favorite Strike novel. I liked Troubled Blood the best, then Cuckoo’s Calling.
Yes, I hit upon the same solution. My favorites are the same as yours, but reversed.
Laundry triplets with you!
Thanks for mentioning these books. I think you did previously because I started watching the TV show on NetFlix, but ended up canceling my subscription. I forgot all about it until you mentioned it this weekend, so now I’m listening to the books via audible. Just finished the first one last night. 👍🏼
What did you think?
Today I am wearing Clive Christian X. It does smell like Gucci Rush, but is not as in your face. I am about to start cleaning out my car. I want it to look somewhat presentable tomorrow when I take it in. Cleaning the car is one of my most procrastinating tasks.
My ulta finally made a tester of the new Alien Goddess Florale. It smells like salted cantaloupe. I guess I can quit thinking about it now. Lol.
Salted cantaloupe? Ew. Sounds horrid.
I was thinking about+leaning out my car and I said nah!
I didn’t think too much f that Alien either.
Gorgeous early fall day here. But it’s also been sneezing season for me. Not quite sure what is in the air, but I have had to keep the Kleenex handy lately. 🍁🍂🍎🍏🍐🎃🤧
Moved some of Mr. Jalapeno’s furniture into storage this afternoon. He’s giving it to some friends of his (eventually). Bit by bit things are getting sorted…
Teflon kitty decided that my lap was a better spot to nap in this afternoon than the sunny windowsill.
SOTD = Dame Perfumery Gardenia soliflore body butter in the usual spots.
It’s supposed to heat up again but I hope not at the yucky August / September levels!
Nah. I think it’s supposed to be around 80 or so for a few days. Which feels weird for the beginning of October.
We’re supposed to be around 90 the next 2 or 3 days, which for us is not unusual for early October. At least we are out of the triple digits.
