The occasional lemming

Posted by Robin on 31 August 2023 10 Comments

Les Mondes de Diptyque, a new collection of five refillable candles. The fragrances are from perfumer Olivia Giacobetti, and I'll take any or all: La Forêt Rêve (mauve, a "fantastical forest" in the "Mexican jungle"; with tuberose, ylang ylang, jasmine, vanilla and galbanum); La Vallée du Temps (smoke/white, "Jingdezhen....cradle of Chinese porcelain, also famous for its white tea", with white tea, maté and jasmine); Nymphées Merveilles (blue/gray, "gardens of the Renaissance", with orange blossom, jasmine and iris); Temple des Mousses (green, "a Japanese Zen garden...not far from Kyoto", with moss, cedar and matcha); Terres Blondes (terracotta, "Mesa Verde. On the high plateaux of Colorado", with wheat bran, red cedar and burnt earth). The 270g candles are $285 each, the refills are $135. You can find them now at Saks.

And lids! I love lids. But agree, the price is really steep.

Yes, lids. I still have 3 of the IKEA/ Byredo collaboration around the house. I wish they would do another round, those were much more in my price range!😂

They sent me the email about these this morning. Beautiful thick glass and colors, intriguing fragrances, and I like that it’s refillable. But, when I saw the price it stopped me in my tracks. I also wonder how an oval single wick candle would perform. Meaning would the sides of the wax in the oval furthest from the flame pool out all the way or would it tunnel.

One of my friends smell them all and said the scents so basic and not worth the price.
And as another commenter say, the oval shape is a bad idea, as the wax won’t burn all they way to the sides but tunnel.
I had one of their other oval candles and it tunneled so badly. I had to use foil every time I burned it.

How do you use foil to prevent tunneling?

Wrap foil over top with space for flame, idea is to trap as much heat inside the vessel for an even burn.

          Thank you sugarvenom 🙂
It’s not a pretty look but often it helps, sadly sometimes a candle is very stubborn, that even foil don’t help (at least in my experience).
