It's Friday and it's August. Maybe it's too hot to cook? Our community project for today: wear a fragrance that features a note that you might eat in a salad, or that you might grow in a vegetable garden...carrot? tomato? basil? rhubarb?
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm going to be spending my day in the car, heading home from a week of vacation. I'm commando — I didn't bring any perfume with me — but when I get home I'll put on a dab of Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Kaleidoscope.
Reminder: 8/25 is National Banana Split Day. Do whatever you like with the theme!
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Save travels, Robin! I love your choice of fragrance (judging from the description, I’ve never smelled it).
I had intended to wear Love Les Carottes but it’s hot today and I don’t enjoy earthy iris scents in warm weather. I’m doing another tropical fruit today for my imaginary tropical fruit salad. Fraiche Passiflore by Maître Parfumeur et Gantier, a simple passion fruit cocktail for a warm Friday.
I hope everyone has a good weekend. I’m having my hair cut tomorrow, for the first time in over two years. I think the hairdresser will need extra bin bags after my visit! I’m greatly looking forward to life with shorter hair.
I just chopped my hair off recently too, feels very nice. Hope you enjoy the lightness!
I chopped off my hair for the summer too! I had hair down to my elbows and decided to go for a long bob. When the stylist was almost done, I was like “You know what, go big or go home, right? I want a long pixie!” I don’t regret it one bit. (Okay, maybe some rare days I do miss feeling the breeze in my hair or wearing it up in a pony) The drying time though, goodness, the hair practically dries itself! No more sore arms holding the dryer!
Mine will be a short bob. I have very thick curly (=unruly) hair that is more or less unmanageable long. I will be glad to get rid of it, although I wouldn’t want it completely short either.
I had my hair chopped off too and I love it. A bob works well for my straight hair!
An di just got a short pixie! I love getting my hair cut short – it’s such a feeling of freedom.
Got my hair cut today. I’m settled into short bob territory, if I were thinner I’d do pixie
A haircut after 2 years?!? Wow!
I do admire shorter hair so much. Mine is shoulder length and I keep toying with getting a bob but I wouldn’t be able to retreat to a ponytail or claw clip as I do 90% of the time.
But if I feel the need to pull up my hair so much of the time, maybe I should just have short hair?
Thank you! It was a long day but I’m home. Someone remind me not to do long car trips on a Friday, yeah?
Hope you love your hair cut tomorrow!
It’s cool and rainy yet again, so I’m in L’Heure de Nuit. But this afternoon I’m going out sniffing with a friend ti Etiket and will try to sniff the L’Artisan vegetable garden collection so I’m joining the CP.
L’heure de Nuit is wonderful. Too bad it’s been discontinued.
Let us know what you found on your sniffing expedition!
I tested Escapade Gourmand, Tabac Tabou, Tubéreuse Criminelle, De Profundis, New Look 1947 and Ingenious Ginger. Sprayed lots of strips but that’s what made it onto skin. Loved Tabac Tabou and New Look best. Will be going back in a month to sniff the new Malle, Heaven Can Wait, and Guerlain Tobacco Honey.
Tobacco Honey is calling to me but the price!
Let us know what you think.
Enjoy the sniffing at Etiket.
If it were 25 years ago, I’d be wearing VC&A Tsar for its alluring tarragon* top note or Givenchy Xeryus Rouge for the distinct red-pepper note. But there’s no turning back that clock, so….
I make one meal a day a salad for boring health reasons, and I like a lot of variety. One of the things I’ll throw in sometimes is diced dried apricots, which have an interesting taste (sweet, but also tart, and… musky?) and texture (basically fruit jerky). I wouldn’t spring it on someone because they’d probably think I’d put gumdrops in there, but I like them a lot.
So this is probably cheating, but I’m wearing CSP Vanille Abricot.
* I once wrote to Demeter asking them if they were thinking of doing Tarragon, because they had Basil and a few other green things, and got a response from the owner (!) saying that they’d actually been working on it for a while but hadn’t yet been able get it quite right. I guess they never did, which is a shame, because to my nose it’s the most purely beautiful of all the garden herbs.
I used to buy Tsar as a present for someone. It was a wonderful fragrance.
I totally agree about the beauty of tarragon! The combination of tarragon and mushrooms is sublime, imho. Yesterday I wore Jubilation 25 in which tarragon is one of the beautifully combined notes. One of my favorites.
I love tarragon as well. I often use it with fennel to enhance the mild anise taste.
Fresh tarragon goes wonderfully with mild white fleshed fish. Very tasty!
I’m wearing DKNY Women in the tall skinny bottle for tomato leaf and mandarin orange. I don’t wear this much because it’s a pain to dig out the bottle, which is stuffed in a back corner of my perfume cabinet so it doesn’t fall over. I would swap it but it would be hard to ship.
Nevertheless, it smells great.
I saw a 2pack of Women the other day. I think it was 2 1oz bottles. Much easier to store!
Definitely! Mine is a big bottle, I think it came from TJMaxx years ago.
I am wearing L’Artisan Piment Brulant, because the chili pepper note here smells similar to bell pepper, which I love in salads. And of course there are salads with chili pepper.
Great call!
Dear Robin and everybody else, its been FOREVER since I last commented here!
Life as we know it is eventful, and over half a year ago I moved half way across the globe to Hong Kong. This place is now home for the foreseeable future.
This time difference means I am either sleeping when the SOTD post comes up or that it’s too late for me to comment to be relevant.
I still read up on the posts and comments when I can though! Makes me happy to feel I am still part of this very lovely community although distant. I do miss you all dearly. I will try to comment whenever I can, like today(!) when the timing is right! Don’t forget me please! 🤣
Robin, I don’t remember if I commented when it happened, but I am very truly sorry for your loss. I hope you are mending and feeling stronger everyday. My heart goes out to you. ❤️
SOTD, carrots galore in I Love Les Carottes, heavily applied. 🥕
Nice to hear from you!
Nice to see you, perfect choice for the CP.
I was just thinking of you recently. I’m glad to hear everything is going ok.
Well hello! Nice to see you again.
Hello! Nice to hear from you. I know what you mean about time zones, at least I get to squeeze in at the last minute over breakfast 🙂
Waving hi!
Nice to see you here 👋. I always check back the following day to see any posts I’ve missed, so I would encourage you to post anyway regardless of the time difference.
Hello! You smell AMAZING!
Hiya! Pleased to have an update from you! I would second what Laila said about posting. I play next-day catch up all the time, too.
Wow – have you lived in Hong Kong before? My sister visited it and loved it. I almost always check comments from the previous day, too.
So nice to see you happy888cat! Thank you for the condolences, always appreciated. It is a long slow adjustment.
I hope you are loving your new life!
I’m wearing Diptyque Venise, which has in addition to vetiver, basil, green pepper and tomato. This is only the second time I’ve worn this, and I really like it.
Well that’s certainly spot on!
Wearing ISM today for the carroty iris today. We should do a skank CP or maybe a aldehydes CP.
I love ISM. No skank at all for me in ISM unless you are just remarking that it would make a good CP!
You smell wonderful – very much a garden scent.
The temperature here today is quite cool at the moment and heading for a very tolerable 80F by 5 this evening, so I’m happy. We’re not done with broiling yet, though, so I’m reveling in the coolth while I can.
SOTD is Azemour. I suppose it’s technically CP-compliant, but mostly I just wanted to smell this gorgeous composition. 🍊
You smell wonderful — that was me, earlier this week!
SOTD = Zoologist Bee 🐝
Love it! And ringthing wore it this week!
In my savings bond saga, I am waiting to see if the bank will accept my over an inch tall stack of them. I am just getting one excuse after another and I don’t trust any of them even though I do have some of my money here.
Good luck with the bond adventure! Will you treat yourself to something nice after, with all the money?!
It’s not over yet…we’ll see.
Smelling fabulous, hajusuuri! Hope the bond issue gets settled soon.
I’ve cashed in savings bonds before and it really wasn’t an issue for the bank. I hope they just give you your money. Have you talked with the manager?
Adding.. in my case it was only a couple.
Interesting. I cashed a savings bond a couple of years ago (one I got as a reward from a local business club when I graduated high school!) and had to take it to just any bank in my dad’s town, since I don’t live in the U.S. any longer, It wasn’t an issue for me, except that they insisted on a U.S. address for the tax paperwork.
Maybe you will have to do them three at a time, once a week or something.
I planned on wearing Racine Carrée by Anatole Lebreton with its carrot and celery notes–but couldn’t lay my hands on my sample. So instead I went with fruit salad-y Pulp. I am coming to the end of my decant. While I’ve enjoyed the perfume, it is less so every time I wear it. And, of course, after lavishly applying Pulp my RC magically appeared in the little box right in front of me on my dresser. 🙂
That is the way it works, isn’t it?
I love today’s photo, Robin! I hope you’re having an uneventful drive home.
My SOTD is Iris de Gris for the green pea accord. According to L’Artisan’s description, there’s also mint and blood orange zest.
I’m very much looking forward to the weekend, it’s been a hectic week with my son back to school and lots going on at work. I’ve just been feeling a bit off-kilter too, not sleeping well and generally a bit anxious. I’ll have to think of something that will recharge me. Have a good weekend, all!
Thank you, totally uneventful, just LONG. There are too many people out driving these days. Luckily there are also lots of nerdy podcasts to keep me distracted.
In a some AA Limon Verde, to evoke a citrus vinaigrette
Great idea.
Wearing Guerlain AA Herba Fresca for the CP. Lemon and mint to be used in any salad.
Happy Friday! 🥗
That one was on my list too. And the name is literally “fresh herb” – very salad-y. You smell lovely!
Thank you, Glanys!
I love mint in salad. I have some growing in my backyard ( it came with the house and is the only thing I haven’t killed lol) I never pick it though.
I also love mint. I was giving a mint plant in a pot a couple of weeks ago by a friend, and it is struggling badly. I think I am killing it!
My parents used to have a mint patch at one of their houses that was almost unkillable. It survived blizzards and heat waves for years.
We matched on citrus perfume notes today. 🍊🍋🌿
Paris-Deauville is a wonderful citrus scent. I have not reached for my bottle this year. I have to remedy that.
Citrus is tricky for me, but Paris-Deauville works beautifully.
I went for Iris de Gris from L’Artisan’s Potager collection: tomato leaf and pea-like galbanum, but somehow none of the eponymous iris.
Hi Twin!
Hello back!
… btw, sorry I’m only able to reply in this way – although I managed to see someone posting about Iris de Gris a couple of hours ago (which I suppose would have been you), the gremlins of technology seem to have since made off with your own thread.
DSH cousins with Robin — I’m in August Picnic 1976. Rhubarb, juicy green leaves, cut grass, a little squeeze of citrus. Yummy stuff!
I also made up an aromatherapy blend last night and started the day off with that. I’ve been struggling with some perimenopause symptoms but can’t do HRT due to migraine/stroke risk. So, trying an alternate approach with some oils that are supposed to boost and balance progesterone. My home-brew blend is bergamot, rose, ylang ylang, rosemary, and frankincense, and it’s pretty darn pleasant!
Your homebrew oil blend sounds lovely.
I’m really liking it! It’s got a sort of cozy, spiced-banana thing going on.
Hope it helps with the perimenopause.
I never tried August Picnic, it sounds wonderful!
Very good luck with your blend, perimenopause symptoms are no fun.
Chantal Thomass the original also known as black for its tomato note, lots of red fruits too, it’s a gourmand but has a well-judged level of sweetness, so still suitable for summertime but tonight I’m in Vivienne Westwood Boudoir blooming in the warm weather.
You always have something different for me to look up!
😀 Chantal Thomass makes beautiful lingerie out of my price range. The perfume is affordable, like £10-15 on eBay, but like everything prices will increase. I’ve never tried the EDT version.
Oh, I was forgetting I have also Osez-Moi which I like even better, a bit retro powdery perfume.
Oohh… retro powdery sounds nice.
Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune.
Grapefruit in or as a salad, anyone?
Fresh and zesty on a warm Pre-Spring day.
Happy Friday!
✌🏻🌹
Happy pre-spring J B!🌞
Yes to pre-spring! We’re still having cold weather, but it doesn’t have quite the same wintry feel.
Spring is getting closer!
What a beautiful photo, Robin! I can hardly believe it’s kale.
Today I’m accruing CP points in JM Nasturtium and Clover. This is one of my happy scents, for sure! I love nasturtiums in the garden and the petals look beautiful atop a salad. It’s one of the few plants that I was ever able to grow. ☺️ When I was young, a friend taught me that you could eat the tiny little petals. I still remember that bit of sweet nectar.
Not long-lasting, but pretty while it’s there.
So sorry your vacation on the lake is over, Robin. Hoping the re-entry is not too painful.
Yay for happy scents!
Yay! 💖
I would love to smell that. Clover is one of my favourite scents.
I wish you could! It was a limited edition, though, and you know what that means. 😒
I love nasturtiums, too. I ring my herb garden with them since they are edible. Too!
What a great idea!
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen nasturtiums. 🤔
I bet you have and didn’t know what they were!
https://talkflowerstome.com/5-best-reasons-to-grow-nasturtiums/
Thanks for the wonderful link, Robin! I enjoyed that.
This morning I sprayed on some Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s Green Rhubarb & Cane Sugar…and then I later added a spritz of Experimental Perfume Club’s Rose Rhubarb, from a sample that a lovely perfume-pal gave me last night.
I hope everyone has a restful weekend!
Do tell more about your perfumes, please!
Hello all!
The stifling cruel fever of heat has broken, thank goodness, leaving a beautifully gently warm morning.
I am wearing Orange Absolute, which has basil/herbal note to it. It’s perfect right now.
I wanted to go see Das Rheingold in Seattle – it’s the best Wagner opera, honestly- but work got in the way! The set & costume design is brilliant!
Yay for gentle warmth! I enjoyed Massachusetts weather for a week and the novelty of wearing long pants in August.
Not a vegetable-y kind scent kind of person. SOTD is Ingenious Ginger as I am sure ginger is a root that grows in the ground.
We have a cyclone warning here which something I have never had in over 40 years in California! Interesting.
I’d heard something about a disturbance off the coast of California earlier in the week. I hope it doesn’t wreak havoc out there.
Me too!
Ginger has really beautiful flowers.
Really? I must look them up.
I took a day off work yesterday, I didn’t do much at all. Just lazed around the house, it was lovely. An occasional extra long weekend does make the world feel better 🙂
I’ve got a hair appointment this morning, my usual stylist is overseas at a wedding, so I’m looking forward to seeing how this goes. So far, no-one has ever met her standard, and I keep wondering how a hairstyle that I describe as just “short all over” can vary so much!
Perfume-wise, I’m thinking of Amouage Lyric, potent but overwhelming.
Good luck with the haircut. I’m sure you’ll look great.
It’s my birthday (60) and wedding anniversary today (25) and I haven’t got any plans as usual – for either event. It’s been nice to see the first blooms on the magnolia grandiflora in the gardens. The petals can be added to salad if you like the taste of bitter ginger ( quite strong ginger) and the texture of foam. Lettuces are currently $6 in our supermarket so it’s not a great time for salads, though we eat a lot of grated carrots, beetroot with mint and toasted sunflower seeds. Cold as usual and drinking a lovely cup of chocolate coconut tea in bed ( Harneys Soho ). Wearing CDG Peppermint. I might go and look for albatrosses and fur seals later, and a walk on the beach.
Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary!
Happy birthday and anniversary, Kanuka, in bed with flavored tea sounds really cosy to start the day.
Happy Birthday and happy Anniversary, Kanuka! 🎂🥂
Double happiness to you today!
Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary! Wishing you a wonderful year ahead on both counts! 🥳🥂
Double happiness today! I hope you treat yourself to something special.
Happy birthday, and happy anniversary! Interesting fact that you got married on your birthday. Hope you have a good walk along the beach.
Happy bday and anniversary–would totally join you in a beach walk
to check out albatrosses & seals, despite the cold. Hope it was a great day.
Congratulations on both! I would love to see an albatross someday.
Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary!!!
🎉🎂🥳🎊🤩💞💐🙌🏻🌟🌠
Best wishes for many happy returns of both.
Sounds like the day is starting out right. 😉
Congratulations on your Silver Wedding Anniversary! And Happy Scented Birthday! Enjoy your beach walk.
Happy Happy!🌹
Happy Birthday and Anniversary!
Happy birthday and anniversary! Hope you saw the albatross.
Many happy returns of the day! Did you read Piranisi, by Suzanne Clarke? I liked the albatrosses in that. I hope I can see one someday.

You might like this. If you keep watching you will see a bird in the wind on the ground. It’s a live cam
Thanks everyone!!!!
How lovely – best wishes!
Hope it was a wonderful day Kanuka!
Belated happy birthday and anniversary to you! I hope you had a great beach walk and the creatures were abundant.
For today’s cp, I’m going deep inside my herb garden, my favorite place in my backyard, where I grow parsley-sage-rosemary-and-thyme as well as tarragon, oregano, chives, lemon balm, cilantro, basil, spearmint, summer savory, and, oh yes, catnip for 😻😻and😻! SOTD is the long d/c from 20 or so years ago but still smellin’ great Isabella Rossellini’s Manifesto, clean and green and full of zingy basil. Like so many of you, salad caprese, yes!
Posting this while relaxing under a shady tree overlooking a peaceful pond in a beautiful park on a glorious cool, 🌞 day in a far north suburb. We’re here for the day because Mr. Laila won tickets to the Happy Together 2023 tour later today featuring the best songs from the 60’s and 70’s and featuring the Turtles, Little Anthony from Little Anthony and the Imperials, and others from the days of my youth. To make it even better, the acoustic/percussive guitarist Jim Green I posted about previously just happened to be in town and have an outdoor lunchtime concert here today, so we came early to experience him and he was awesome. These days of wonderful outdoor music are certainly numbered so we’re taking advantage of them when we can.
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead 🎶
I am having fun just thinking about your evening. The weather in the Midwest is so good this week, but I think the heat is coming. Also, I am so excited because I am finally getting some catnip started in my garden. I’m going to beat back the peppermint to a far corner, and let catnip take over the main mint area.
The evening was great fun! How is it we can automatically remember the words to songs from decades ago? Musicians were all in their 70’s but we’re still rockin’! Good luck with the catnip. I keep my spearmint in a pot in the ground; otherwise it would take over the whole plot but my catnip doesn’t spread nearly as much.
Catnip has been hit or miss with the cats that have owned me. Some went bonkers for it while others didn’t get it at all.
What is summer savory like?
Summer savory is very similar to thyme but is a little more zingy with a hint of mint. It’s a pretty little plant, an annual I just plant each year from seed. I use just a little of it like I would use thyme.
Wearing Cap Neroli for its rosemary, mint and citrus. May add some Tangy Rhubarb later. We are heading to an outdoor, very casual, restaurant tonight with friends. It’s fish fry night, so that might be on the menu. Then we’re taking a nice sunset pontoon boat ride around a small bay off The Bay of Green Bay (yep…actual name.)
That all sounds lovely, hope it was!
It was! So relaxing.
I am wearing 4711 Myrrh & Kumquat today
I should try that one.
I love Rhubarbe Ecarlate so much I’m wearing it again today. My grandma had rhubarb in the garden and made pies with it. No matter how much sugar she added (and they were very, very sweet) I’d bite into a sour rhubarb chunk and make a face. I think I was about 5. There used to be pictures…
Ha! My grandmother made rhubarb strawberry pie, that was possibly easier for a young ‘un to handle 🙂
Robin — I hope you have a good trip back and enjoyed the week.
I’m in Memory of Kindness today, which I’d targeted as my Friday scent when I saw the CP.
I did, thanks! And you smell wonderful.
Safe travels back, Robin!
I’m still a little scrambled today re: time zones. Did not sleep very much on this flights home Wednesday & Thursday. I had to take some melatonin early this morning, since I was still awake at Stupid o’Clock. 🥴 Teflon kitty is less clingy today.
Very pleasant late summer weather here. I wouldn’t mind a couple weeks of this! Pretty sure that it ain’t gonna happen.
SOTD = Chanel Paris-Deauville EdT, courtesy of Kris. It’s perfect for both today’s weather and the CP with the citrus and basil notes. After all, basil is one of the components of a caprese salad. 😋
Beautiful weather twins – not too hot to cook in our parts! I have major time zone lags, too, after long-distance travel. LOL “stupid o’Clock!”
I thought I had picked a good flight plan to minimize the disruption. Maybe not?
Definitely not too hot to cook here. But I enjoyed leftover pizza today.
IDK where I picked up “Stupid o’Clock” from, but it comes in handy every so often
Deauville is perfect for the weather and the CP. Hope you are enjoying it!
Thank you, I am! It’s a perfect “under the radar” perfume for me.
Pleasant weather triplets! Hopefully you get back to normal sleep soon.
Yay for getting nice weather!
Thanks, and hope you’re all adjusted by tomorrow!
Had a good time out sniffing today, sprayed lots of lovely things. The top favorites were Dior New Look 1947 and Parfum d’Empire Tabac Tabou. Definitely no funds for perfume purchases at the moment but I am enjoying the cloud of scents I’m sitting in right now.
Going out and sniffing is a joy even without purchasing. Well.. unless you get an awful SA.
Hope you are back home and rested up, Robin – so happy you had sister time! For the CP win, I’m wafting Miller Harris La Feuille. It’s been in my closet for several years, and I really should wear it more often. I am such a lover of Orientals, Florientals, and skanky-chypres that I neglect my greenies. When I first got it, I liked it because it does smell like that tomato vine musk that gets on your hands in the garden. But since I’ve been smelling that so much lately in my own garden, I can see that it’s really more along the galbanum lines. (Note: that tomato vine sap/oil that gets on your hands smells like hing powder to me, which is in the ferula/galbanum/carrott family.) If I spray LF in the Hajusuuri way, I do get the rose note after an hour or so. I like La Feuille as a leafy scent better than other herbal scents like O de Lancome, 4711, or Mandarine Basilic.
Oooooh, La Feuille sounds great!
Back to school shopping has been crazy. I am dreading working this weekend. I remember when I would start school in September. We would get 2 outfits and a pair of dress shoes and a pair of tennis shoes. We didn’t have backpacks but we did have book bags and of course, Trapper Keepers.
For my sotd I chose Miu Miu because of the extreme black pepper note. I don’t even know where black pepper comes from, but I know I use it on my salad lol.
I remember getting backpacks in junior high and high school to take all the homework to and from the school. Since I was taking a bus, it was kind of necessary.
And that was a long time ago!
My kid has a backpack in lieu of a locker, apparently. She got a locker at her school this past year (and we logged on right away to get her a locker that was central, as we’d been warned), but after a month or so it became clear that she never used the locker, she was just carrying all her books in her backpack around school all day. I guess it helps that now they only have 4 subjects a semester (DO NOT get me started on this), but it’s still the case that her backpack weighs a quarter of what she weighs, and yet she still refuses to use the locker.
This reminds me, I should check the state of the bottom of her backpack to see if she needs a new one.
I wore a sample of Delina today for the CP, chosen for the rhubarb note. But I did layer it with Henry and Rose Sheep’s Clothing for a musky base.
We grew rhubarb when I was a kid. It looks almost like a weed. Rhubarb was one of the first “crops” to harvest in the spring and I remember dipping my rhubarb in sugar. My mother makes great rhubarb-apple crisps and I love the pink color of the rhubarb. Weird to see rhubarb for high prices in southern grocery stores.
Was down to 77 degrees today in the AM, nice. Too bad it was 103 later on.
103, ouch!
Whoops the day for away from me, but I’ve been tomato leaf-licious in CB I Hate Perfume Memory of Kindness.
We were twins! Wonderful scent!
We smelled great today!
I made it to Armenia and it is unbelievably hot here. Perfume selection has improved drastically lately and I had to try brands we don’t have in Montreal. I was able to try SMN Iris, looking forward to try Til from Laboratorio Olfattivo and Voskanian which is an Armenian brand will come out soon with a rose scent.
I am wearing 100Bon Musc & jasmin which is beyond beautiful.
Oh, wonderful! I’d love to visit Armenia someday…I used to study that part of the world many years and careers ago.
Forgot to post yesterday because of finals but I did wear Mayan Chocolate for its chile note. One trimester down, 2 more years to graduate. Looking forward to decompressing this week.
