Happy Friday! It’s also National Chocolate Covered Raisins Day, plus the International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims. Here we're celebrating William Morris' birthday. Our community project for today: do whatever you like with the William Morris theme...match a textile or wallpaper or La Belle Iseult, or choose any motif (wear strawberry for Strawberry Thief, for instance)? Or take inspiration from his London house or garden, now under the care of the National Trust? Links: William Morris: A Lifelong Fascination with Flowers at Dovecot, Introducing William Morris at V&A, the William Morris website.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I went with Fruit wallpaper, and to match I'm in Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir, which I have not worn in eons, and which is not so noir as to clash with the sunny design. The original colorways were duskier anyway.
Reminder: on 3/31, for Eiffel Tower Day, wear a perfume that says Paris to you, or that has Paris in the name, or ?
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: top image shows detail from Fruit wallpaper, in Leaf Green/Madder, as currently produced by Sanderson Design Group for the Morris & Co collection. You can see an older version of Fruit at The Met.
Happy Friday! I’m wearing Donna Karan Gold to go with William Morris Golden Lily, which is available as towels at Williams Sonoma.
You won my “who am I going to copy today” contest! Woo-hoo!
🤣
I love the copy contest!
Excellent and you smell great.
There is a William Morris rose, apricot-coloured and supposedly with an apricot note to its scent, and since I don’t have any vintage Lancôme Trésor (the ultimate apricot rose), I decided to stack Lush Rose Jam and CSP Vanille Abricot. Not particularly great, I have to say: less than the sum of its parts, although interestingly it does emphasize the spicy facets of Rose Jam. After the gym and a shower I put on some regular old Vanille Abricot, which is never the wrong answer as far as I’m concerned.
Vanille Abricot is lovely🍑
I’m wearing a perfume oil from Alkemia called Frondescence, from one of their spring sample sets.
perfume oil twins
I wasn’t really sure how to pick for this cp, so I decided to go with a British perfumer.
I’m in Love & Crime by Ex Idolo. Just a drop because I’m headed to the movie later. Taking myself to see A Good Person. Morgan Freeman is in it, so it’s bound to be good right? I’m of the generation where I still think of him in The Electric Company.
It’s been unseasonably cold this week and yesterday we woke to a layer of snow. I am so over it. The birds tell me spring IS on the way. At least the sun is out today.🌞
Yes it is very cold this morning!
Have fun at the movies. I saw Molly Shannon is in it too. It looks good.
Thanks! Yes, she was good.
Unseasonably cold here today, too. And rainy.
I took one look at today’s photo and made a beeline for Eau des Merveilles. It’s been a while since I wore it last, judging by the dust level on the bottle’s shoulders. Anyway, happy Friday everyone!
Happy Friday and LOL, SheriG! Waves dusty bottleS to you.
😄 I always feel bad for letting them get so dusty, especially when they’re as good as EdM. Glad to know I’m not alone!
From the photo I almost went with Carthusia Mediterraneo. I like Eau des Merveilles for those colors too.
Oh, Mediterraneo is a brilliant match for that! Maybe somebody else here thought of it and will chime in. 🍋
Also guilty of ignoring bottles for years at a time. 😔
Hello all!
Not sure I can make the logical leap to poll compliance as I’m in vintage Dune. Which is lovely and I look forward to smelling it for hours. I feel like something from Aesop would have worked perfectly!
Have a great day!
You smell wonderful!
I was thinking of Aesop as well, and Hwyl as Morris’ was Welsh on his father’s side and the word means to be invigorated/ motivated, getting in your groove
You smell wonderful! I love vintage Dune, I plan on wearing it tomorrow.
I am in the oud oil I picked up in Marrakesh
Happy Friday all.

A song for you ltsg!
Oh Lillyjo-you just made my Friday.
Thank you so much
Fragrant hugs !!!
😊
For me, the artwork L’Artisan Parfumeur has been using on at least part of their line for the last couple of years feels very close to Morris’s designs.
The most pronounced examples certainly stem from their Botanique Collection (cf. https://www.artisanparfumeur.com/samples.html). However, since I don’t own any of these, I chose Premier Figuier (https://www.artisanparfumeur.com/fragrance/travel-size/premier-figuier-eau-de-toilette-10ml-1563129.html), which somehow still feels close enough.
Yes, good call!
It seems like several William Morris designs use daffodils, so I thought of Ostara. It is perfect for today’s cloudy, cool but mild weather and all the daffodils in our neighborhood. The box and bottle are so pretty. Ostara segued nicely from yesterday’s 2013 L’Instant edp. I’m smelling resins, spices and incense from both, not as a side-by-side comparison but my impression. I can certainly celebrate chocolate covered raisins! I don’t eat much candy anymore, but I’d still eat some of those little goodies.
Twins! I love Morris and Ostara.
Happy Friday!
I’m going with the William Morris fruit theme in Olympic Orchids Carosello for the Muscat grape, floral and green notes. It lends itself perfectly to a Morris composition.
Yes, sounds quite morrisian.
😊
I went with an homage to Strawberry Thief, in more ways than one.
I am wearing an all natural perfume, Love-In-A-Mist Edp by Providence Perfume Co, with notes of love-in-a-mist aka Nigella Damascena, mimosa, pink peppercorn, sandalwood and sweet clover. Flower meadow in a bottle! The shape of the flower itself reminds of the painting; also, the Nigella Damascena absolute, distilled from its seeds, smells of strawberries. I saw it on Hermitage Oils website years ago and reading the description (“The base notes are outstanding and comprise of acacia honey, beeswax, mimosa, cassie absolute, candyfloss, fresh strawberries, powerful peach and sweet watery apple”) made me take notice. And order a bottle. It’s a pricey ingredient, so I am not surprised that very few perfumes use it, but I am certainly glad that Providence Perfume Co put it to such good use. I am currently obsessed with their ultimate iris perfume, Irisque and wear it round the clock but this might be my next purchase from the house. Photo of my little flowery treasure sample: https://instagram.com/p/CqLSko_utZ5/
Sounds a great match
I’m sticking with the roses, in Lyric.
I think today wins as day with the longest “day of” names. (And I really didn’t realize chocolate covered raisins needed a day, but what do I know?)
So so many of the Day Ofs are very very specific, like Left-Handed Knitters. Okay, I made that up, but for all we know there is such a Day.
I’d qualify for Right-Handed Knitters who Knit Left-Handed Day. 🙂 (Well, I knit Continental)
Lyric is one of my all time favorites and wore it yesterday.
Everything has a day 😉
I’m in Papillon’s Anubis – it’s British at least, albeit veering to another 19C style, namely egyptomania.
Best I can come up with:
https://emuseum.huntington.org/objects/34788/flight-into-egypt;jsessionid=6D0FB722E0136BA890C789353A86BD4E
In Hermes Un Jardin a Cythere to match today’s CP image! Yummy citrus and nutty light woods.
It’s finally warm enough here to bust out the citruses 🙂
I envy your weather then!
Currently in no 19 parfum. The interview went well and now it’s the waiting.
And you might remember no 19 as your interview perfume for the job from here on.
Weird – if I have a stressful event coming up, I either have to wear something I wear so often that it will have no association with said event or I have to pick something that won’t be tarnished if the day goes sideways.
Good luck. It sounds like it went great! Plus you smelled wonderful as well as doing a good job.
Good luck. I am glad it went well.
Glad to hear that the interview went well.
Finishing up my online class. My brain is mush. And it is a nice sunny day so I will be wrapping up early today – 5/6 full days plus a half day is good enough.
I wasn’t able to swing a perfume of the day compliant with community project so going with the easy choice of Glossier You.
That is an easy choice, I love it. You smell great!
An easy perfume is the right choice after that marathon class!
When I saw today’s photo, I immediately thought of Arielle Shoshana Saturday. My little decant is from the initial launch timeframe, so the name is still AS. I’m not usually a fan of fruity fragrances, but this one makes me smile to wear it. 😊
Happy Friday, everyone!
This is a great scent!
It’s such a happy perfume 🙂
I have William Morris fabrics or designs in three of our four bedrooms, and WM carpets in living room and dining room — I just love his work. One of my favorite Morris textiles was actually designed by his colleague J.H. Dearle, as many were — it’s called Daffodil: https://www.wmgallery.org.uk/collection/search-the-collection-65/daffodil-design-for-printed-cotton-a37-c-1891/search/morris/page/22. So to match it, I’m wearing another English scent, Penhaligons’ Ostara, which is all about spring and daffodils.
It is a lovely scent. Just not one that works on me. You smell delightful.
Thanks for posting the link. Great match
Hi twin! Thank you for the link, which is one I did not see. I quite like the Morris aesthetic too, and I think touches of it work with almost any other style – it’s so mellow and appealing.
I found some beautiful iris tiles on the William Morris Tiles website and decided to go with FM Iris Poudre. I have to go to a memorial service this afternoon and thought this fragrance would be appropriate for that as well. On top of it, Iris Poudre is one of my favorite scents so why wouldn’t I wear it.
I really should try more FM scents.
My love is still the one I cannot smell POAL 😉
If you like iris than there is no doubt in my mind that you would fall in love with it.
Hope that the memorial service goes off without a hitch.
Thank you. It was a coworker that died and a few of his family members were coworkers too. It was nice to see so many people there from a job I once loved. We used to be like one big family! Now many of us have retired or work at other places. Many of us still try to get together.
Sounds like it brought you some solace.
https://youtu.be/quhnejd-h14
This short video from the V&A shows the process of printing Morris’ wallpapers. Thirty wooden blocks were used for one pattern, the colours all individually mixed…the attention and care in relation to the making seems similar to the skill and care needed to produce a complex perfume. How to get all the elements together to produce something distinct , beautiful and timeless rather than blurred and muddy. Matching with Jicky.
So interesting!
Wow, that’s amazing!
And now probably a computer prints them out for Sanderson…
Wearing Guerlain Apres l’Ondee.
Back later to read comments.
Happy Friday! 🪻
Perfect for the CP! You smell wonderful.
Thank you, MossyBerry! 🌷
Perfect perfume pick for the weather we both have been experiencing.
Thank you, Jalapeno! What a depressing weather! And we are expecting a cold and very rainy day tomorrow. ☹️
I am wearing SL Fille de Berlin.
I went to smell the new SL home perfumes and fell in love with most of them. I got the Jasmine one which evokes apparently sitting in a garden at night in Morocco with the night blooming jasmine trees. I also loved the one that transports you into a cottage with a leather sofa, lots of books and a cup of coffee.
Those sound really nice.
I love SL Fille de Berlin.
Oh how nice! I sort of ignored those but now you’ve made me curious.
In the British house of Miller Harris, in Blousy–copying others referencing the Strawberry Thief motif.
Blousy notes are: Pink Pepper, Davana, Green Mandarin, Coriander and Cinnamon; middle notes are Liquor, Strawberry, Moroccan Rose, Turkish Rose Oil, Iris, Hawthorn, Violet and Carnation; base notes are Vanilla, Sandalwood, Tonka Bean and Oakmoss.
In other news, Wednesday was a William Morris-like watching woodland creatures day. A tiny tiny tiny fawn was dropped off in the way back of our yard mid-morning. I think it had been birthed only hours before. It stayed curled up behind an old bucket we keep filled with water for wild animals (from the days when we were parched with drought ) until dusk, when finally its mum came back to collect it. She brought with her another very tiny fawn–so she was probably off giving birth to its twin. All ended well, but boy I was stressed that it had been abandoned. By evening it had become quite cold outside. I was careful to stay far away from it so as not to ruin its scentlessness (fawns are born without scent so that they won’t attract predators), but I got one photo. https://www.instagram.com/p/CqGyy15vUOTgqufRU7kIWMTIb6bRVoywzCm5-w0/ (Sorry I have a closed Insta account as too many odd folks–men (bots?) w a single post of themselves in military uniforms or speaking at humanitarian events (apparently my types?) with hundreds or even thousands of followers were following me—I still get these requests nearly every other day, but I delete them).
Beautiful story, thank you for sharing!
I have the same problem, all those military men with short haircuts and one post. Ugh. Beautiful fawn photo!
Running around all morning trying to Get Things Done.
Happened to zip into a TJMaxx and found a 30ml of SJP Stash Privé for 7.99 so that’s what I’m wearing.
Happy weekend!!
Happy Weekend Deva!
👋🏼 Congrats on finding 2 pairs of shoes for your young lady! 👟
That’s perfumemath free!😀
Exactly! The safest kind of blind buy😃
Meep meep, Road Runner!
Right?! Although, I will say it’s better than feeling like Wile E Coyote!
Oh yeah! Those anvils *hurt*!
They had that at my local TJ Maxx, but I think the price was higher….
Well, you didn’t really miss anything. It is not bad at all. It just a very P.C. type of scent. No personality or character, at least on me.
It’s my birthday and I’m in POAL! I never knew I shared a birthday with Morris until this week.
Sadly I couldn’t take the day off because I have so much to do, but it’s probably for the better since I don’t want the work lingering on my mind over the weekend. I’m looking forward to going out to dinner with my family tonight and CAKE.
Happy Birthday!
Best wishes on your birthday.
Happy birthday! Enjoy your cake!🎂
Happy, happy, happy birthday! 🎂
Happy Scented Birthday tulipani! 🎂🥂🎊
Happy birthday!
Happy Birthday 🎂! Wishing you a wonderful year ahead!
Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday! 🎂
Have a great birthday and hope you blow out all your candles
Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday. Cake is always a good thing!
Wishing you the best birthday EVER and delicious cake!
Happy birthday!!
Happy Birthday! You smell delightful! (still do w/ POAL) ☺
Hope it was very special.💜
Happy belated birthday! Hope it was a great day and the cake was extra tasty!
So for CP, I tried to cram as much William Morris as possible into one scent. Went with Eau d’Italie Paestum Rose… because its tumble of flowers – rose, peony – reminded me of his beautiful gardens as well as some of his floral wallpaper… then there’s its incense, myrrh and opoponax, to me kind of medieval and church-y, calling to mind his stained glass works on religious themes as well as legends from the Middle Ages. Plus I just really like Paestum Rose. 😀
You smell wonderful! You have reminded me to look for my decant all the way in the back of my cabinet.
Thanks!
How perfect!
Thanks! My first CP!
Oh yes, definitely – that’s an absolute beauty!
It was one of my very first perfume loves, dragging me down the rabbit hole. I went willingly.
“I just really like Paestum Rose.” This is all you need!
Couldn’t agree more. One of my first loves.
I love Paestum Rose, and am sad it’s no longer available. You smelled great today!
Still unmotivated, although I managed to take out the recyclables today.
There are at least 3 things contributing to this: the weather, a horrible night of almost no sleep, and the fact that Mr. Jalapeno and I are not getting along. We haven’t been for a while.
SOTD = back in Supra Floral to match all the flowers in those William Morris prints.
Oh dear. All tough things to deal with. Hugs to you.
Thanks LizzieB.
Big hugs Jalapeno 💙
Thank you lillyjo. Right now Mr. Jalapeno is giving me the silent treatment. Again.
That’s awful and uncomfortable. I’m sorry and hope things get better.
Sending 🤗 🤗 🤗 and hoping life gets better soon.
Appreciate the hugs Laila.
Oh no! The funk continues. It makes my woes seem like nothing. Big hugs to you. And you smell good, as usual.
Thank you.
Adding some more hugs, Jalapeno.
Thanks Gail.
Sending hugs and positive vibes Jalapeno.🌹🌻🩷
Thanks PL67. I know you are going thru a difficult time yourself.
I’m so sorry about the troubles. Sending you a hug and support.
Thank you.
Hugs to you. So sorry you are going through this.
Thanks Kris. It’s been brewing for a while, sad to say.
More hugs 💕
Appreciate all I can get now.
Oh dear, I’m so sorry Jalapeno. I wish I had some wonderful words of advice, but I don’t. Hang in there.
I’m with you on the sleep, and I’m sorry to hear about Mr. Jalapeno. Sending happy thoughts your way!
Really late…but I’m sorry the waters are rough, Jalapeno. You deserve laughs, metal tunes and some extra cat snuggles.
Much love.
Phew! Long day at the computer. My eyes are blurry.
LPRN Black Perfecto EdT for me (Eau Florale?). I figured the combination of rose and leather suited not only some of the wallpapers but the room in which they’d hang.
And you smell good too!
Time to do something nice for your eyes after all that screen time.
I didn’t put on perfume until noon today because I was indecisive and just not in a good place mentally this morning, but I ultimately went with L’Ombre Dans L’eau for both the Trellis and Daisy wallpaper be designed. I don’t wear this perfume often enough and it is hitting the spot today.
Part of my foul mood was caused by a Bed Bath and Beyond package being stolen from outside my apartment building yesterday late afternoon. Instead of using the call box to get buzzed in to delivery it securely to my building lobby, FedEx left it outside unsecured under the cap box and (locked) mail boxes. I can tell for sure they didn’t use the call box because it calls right to my cell phone, and I don’t have any missed calls and was here and available at the time of delivery. Even more annoying is that BB&B seems to not have a customer service email address so I’ll probably have to call them to see about getting a refund. Final annoyance on the situation is that there’s a FedEx location 6 blocks up my street so even if they didn’t want to take the time to use the call box, they could have taken it up there. I’d have happily walked up there to get it. Harrumph.
Brilliant! The whole Diptyque aesthetic is so Morris!
And of course all the best for your attempts to sort out the shipping issues!
Thank you!
Oy! BB&B’s days seem to be numbered. I hope you get all sorted out or just dispute the charge.
Thanks, and I agree on BB&B. I didn’t think I’d have to check before ordering if they have a customer service email option, but now it’s something to check for before placing orders from companies. I will do a card dispute if I need to. The sad thing is how excited I was for this silly order to arrive. I’ve been long overdue to replace almost all my bathroom hand towels, as they’ve seen better days, so I went to town ordering different types of towels from BB&B’s sale section. I knew today would be laundry day so it would be perfect timing to get the new towels. I bet most of the towels are now out of stock so I may change course and order some really nice towels from Pottery Barn.
In happy news, my eBay bottle of Serge Lutens Arabie arrived via DHL from Kuwait today! Kinda sad how well the delivery from Kuwait went vs. the one from Kentucky. 😆
Ugh! That’s terrible but I guess not uncommon anymore. I know I don’t leave ANYTHING out when camping any more. Doesn’t matter where, if it’s a state park, RV Park, or dispersed camping, nothing is safe. Someone stole my gallon of distilled water last month. I mean, come ON! Seen so many people that go “free” shopping and walk out the door with stuff. I hope you’re at least able to get a refund and you do t have to jump through a million hoops to get it.
It is a sad state of affairs with all the theft. Just this week a neighbor’s Jeep was stolen! My missing towels package pales in comparison to that loss and hassle. And thank you! I’ll call customer service soon when I’m in the right state of mind.
Argh! It seems that some delivery folks are so overworked that they can’t do a decent job.
And others are just lazy.
Indeed. Our USPS carriers are wonderful, same for the regular UPS driver here. FedEx is often the most disappointing of the delivery services when it comes to making a good delivery.
My brother has been calling FedEx “Fed Up!”
I hope you get resolution on your towels. It just stinks that people can be such reprehensible jerks.
Thanks, lillyjo. I totally agree. Thankfully, this wasn’t a precious item that was stolen. I got my Arabie bottle without a hitch today so I’m thankful for that.
I’m sorry about your mishap. It’s so disappointing when you’re looking forward to something and now to have to deal with this hassle instead. I’m glad that you did get the Arabie, though. Enjoy!
Thanks, allo! I’m so happy to have Arabie back in my life. I think it’s been a few years since I finished off a sample or decant of it.
Purolator is the worst here. They claim they tried to deliver, multiple days in a row, when I’ve been sitting in the house working. They didn’t even bother to ring. But then they hold the package hostage in their one office, downtown, 30 minutes and a $15 parking garage charge away. No thanks.
But yeah, BB&B is dead here in Canada (well, in the last throes). Same with Nordstrom, so I guess they’re in good company?
Piggybacking for points in DK Gold.
I took my daughter shoe shopping today. She walks uneven so her shoes wear out very quickly. We were able to find two pair for spring.
Are her feet different sizes? If yes, Nordstrom will allow you to buy a pair of different sized shoes.
They are the same size but very wide.
Sounds like she might either pronate or supinate. Pronation is walking on the inside of your foot, while supination is walking on the outside.
She manages to walk on the inside but also on her heels. The heels get destroyed.
I have a similar issue (supination) and when I remember to, I get the local shoe store to put heel protectors on the bottom of new shoes. Then what gets worn down are the removable heel protectors, which can be easily and cheaply replaced.
SOTD = Jo Malone Cade & Cedarwood Cologne
Beautiful bottle and lovely scent. While this may not necessarily be a subject of William Morris’ wallpaper, it has the right aesthetics.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CqMC_zpOIsC/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
It has been a long week and I am so glad it’s FriYAY!
Greenie seems to match a LOT of your perfumes… 😺
Hope you have a great weekend hajusuuri!
Morris’ complex textile and wallpaper designs always had an Oriental exotic feel to me, and that, coupled with his association with fantasy fiction and medievalism, led me to consider the original Cartier Le Baiser Du Dragon as my SOTD. When I read that the ‘Peacock and Dragon’ (1878) was one of his favorite designs, my hand reached for it! Earthy, woody, and spicy with that bit of boozy amaretto, it’s warm and comforting at the same time as it is seductive. To complement my fragrance, I’m wearing one of my favorite late winter/early spring shirts; its pattern could definitely be a Morris textile or wallpaper. Red flowers that appear to be poppies, with small black-and-white birds perched on their green leaves and stems, all on a soft golden background. All that’s missing from the pattern is the dragon, but his magical, mystical presence makes itself known, soft as a kiss, through my scent.
Spring is here (despite the threat of snow tomorrow) in the tiny, bright blue Scilla wildflowers that scamper everywhere here as its harbinger. Even the Chicago Tribune featured a closeup of the blooming Scilla on its front page today, with the caption that Spring is 2 weeks early here! Our snowdrops are still in bloom, and we have some miniature purple Iris already in bloom. Yesterday we went to the orchid show at the Botanic Garden and we were transported to a beautiful tropical world. It was awesome!
Wishing everyone a beautiful weekend ahead! 🐉 💋
I hope you have a happy weekend too and glad that spring has arrived.
Oh, I love your match Laila, and that you even managed to carry it through to your clothing!
Perfect match!
I’ve been unscented mostly since we got back home. Me thinks we both picked up the dreaded ick that we had avoided for 2 plus years. I’m not surprised really but boy, what a week. Glad I was vaccinated as it hasn’t been much fun. I’ve even lost my sense of smell. I can smell a few strong essential oils, but barely. I read that sniffing eo’s can help retrain your nose. Not sure if that’s science-based, but I can smell some ever so slightly better than yesterday.
I’m living vicariously through all you great smelling folks!
Oh no! I hope you and your husband get better soon!
Aww dang it Gail!
I hope you are feeling better and smelling great again soon!
Drat! And Double Drat! Hope that you, your hubby, and your sniffer are all right soon.
