Monday scent of the day 3/6

Posted by Robin on 6 March 2023 178 Comments

Happy Monday, I guess! It's also the European Day of the Righteous and Day of the Dude. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm out of town again, helping a family member, and I will probably be commando through Wednesday.

Reminder: 3/10 will be Time Travel Friday...be as creative as you like with the theme. You could wear a perfume that reminds you of a trip you once took, or that brings you back to a prior period of your life for any reason, or that calls to mind a place you'd like to visit in the past or future.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows Michael J Fox in the 1985 movie Back to the Future.

I was digging through a couple of drawers and now I’m in Hermessence Vanille Galante, which is the palest, gauziest vanilla I can even imagine. Pure DKNY was supposedly based on the smell of “a drop of vanilla in water”, which I thought was the stupidest bit of ad copy ever: if I want to smell like that, I’ll put a drop of vanilla in my own damn water. But VG is pretty close to that idea: some vaporous flowers and a little shard of blond wood, a wisp of smoke, and that sheer watery vanilla. I can’t even tell if I like it: it just kind of *is*, like barometric pressure.

So…combined, it’s the day of the righteous dude! (Sorry, someone had to say it! :) )

I think I’ll wear Sienne l’hiver today for the CP, another one of those Eau d’Italies that I’m trying to make last forever. This one reminds me of Oktoberfest in Munich in 2008. I wish they’d have kept this one in production; I’d have bought a BUB of this and Paestum Rose. Instead, I tried a sample of Don’t Cry for Me from their new line Altaia recently, and it was…a nice floral, wearable, unobjectionable, but nothing terribly interesting.

Last night’s SotE was Un Jardin sur la Lagune, which was more engaging (though I don’t see myself buying an FB). At any rate, at least it smelled better than the first time I tried the sample, while I was recovering from RSV, and all I could smell was the alcohol.

I loved Morocco when I was there in… omg, dating myself… 1974! Where does the time go? Volibilis(sp?) and the markets of Fez (we came upon an almond market where the scent was overwhelming- almonds as big as you thumb and so delicious) were high points. Plus we spent a couple weeks parked behind the Chief of Police’s compound in Erfoud while we got the engine of the VW van fixed! Travelers tip- do not succumb to the temptations of doing 180 spins in deep sand in a vehicle with an air cooled engine…what can I say, we were all really young… oops, sorry to reminisce- where did you go and what are your highlights?

I’m exploring my sample set that I got from Beautypie recently. 6- 5 ml travel sprays for less than $40. That’s perfumemath free, right? I couldn’t pass it up. Some of their fragrances have been created by Frank Voekl.
Today I’m in La Poesie Des Chiffres with notes of cocoa flower, vanilla and sandalwood. I got a big blast of cocoa flower at the beginning and now it’s drying down and very work friendly.

I’m wearing Bapteme de Feu (love) and heading down to my “yoga studio” (our basement tv room). It’s a relatively busy week with a commitment every day including a MUCH-needed haircut on Friday–funny how the definition of ‘busy’ changes once one is retired.

    Good day, fragrant friends.

Love the theme this week! Some candidates for the week:

    – Diptyque Tam Dao takes me to a serene Buddhist temple from home. On the opposite side of the same coin, Hiram Green Hyde also takes me to a temple but a different one that is full of thick, suffocating smoke from the jossticks, crowded with patrons offering their prayers for the new year.

    – Bleu de Chanel reminds me of lying in bed with a long lost lover as twilight breaks… Not a place I want to return to, but a sweet memory nonetheless.

    – Hermes Un Jardin sur le Nil is a reminder of the early days of falling in love with perfume, all thanks to that one Chandler Burr article on the creation of this perfume. This perfume holds a long-held desire to visit Egypt… maybe one day. Any perfume from the Hermes Jardin series would work well for this week, I’d think. I am very taken by the latest Jardin a Cythere, and I’m glad you all appreciated my first impressions on it last week. I’ve had a couple of wearings now and more developed opinions on it, might jot those down later.

I made the mistake of waking up and heading straight to the news after taking doggo out. Bad idea. 🤮

Then I made the wise decision of coffee, toasted sourdough and researching ā€œDudeismā€ which has been very enlightening. I’m tempted to read ā€œThe Dude and the Zen Master,ā€ which was written by Jeff Bridges and Bernie Glassman in 2013.

Then I made the most excellent decisions to wear Ummagumma. Yeah, man, the very best idea of all. The Dude abides, forever and always. āœŒšŸ¼

SOTM is Rebecca Minkoff once again, and I’ve been trying to decide whether it shares some dna with Byzance (the Rochas one from the ā€˜80s). RM is much less sharply edged but has some of the same spiciness, and adds a tobacco note that I like very much. I wore Byzance in the early ā€˜90s, iirc, but Rebecca isn’t really taking me back … so no points for me today.

Doing a marathon perfume packing job to get all the Canadian perfumes ready for the trip to Montreal. Those boxes are basically ready. On top of that, we are having the house tented for termites after I leave, so ALL the perfumes have to be boxed and moved to my SIL’s house for safekeeping. Which is many, many boxes. Not looking forward to that job. Neither is my husband, who has to carry them down the stairs, out to the car, then into SIL’s house, plus the entire trip in reverse. Of course when I get back in the fall, then I will have to put them all back on the shelves. Let’s hope the termites will stay gone for a long, long time.

I am wearing the new Hermes, jardin de Cythere. I went to the store to try it. It is a very interesting scent full of contrasts. The opening is fresh with lots of lemon, that dries down to something cozy, i guess it is the pistachio.

    SOTD = PG Felanilla

Nice! 4 sprays barely lasted 5 hours. Overall, not bad…thinking I could up this by 2 more sprays without anyone gagging. No IG post yet but I may do so when I get home.

The inevitable happened — my friend’s husband passed away yesterday. It really was a matter of time. He had lung cancer, which metastasized to his brain. He wanted to live but at some point, there was nothing more to be done. Not sure what the death certificate will show because my understanding is there’s quite a bit of judgment call when there are multiple organ failures.

I didn’t remember the CP when I sprayed on Boucheron this morning, it doesn’t transport me anywhere but I wish I had smelled it when it was first released, in 1989. Definitely an 80s kitchen sink perfume. My bottle was perfume math free and smells great but I’m sure the original was a stunner.

I haven’t done a huge amount of travel, but when I do go overseas perfume shopping is a priority, so I’ve got a lot of choice for perfume that makes me think of places. Not to mention all those perfumes that are intended to bring places to mind!
After some dull days, it’s a beautiful clear morning, but the days are a lot shorter already and it feels like autumn.
Despite all the perfume choices I’ve just talked about for the CP, I’m wearing Scherrer to go with my green dress :)

A couple of you receive an enabler pin, but I don’t remember exactly the NSTers that can claim it. I just received Jeffrey Dame Farfelue and this is one that I can wear that contains vanilla. The aldehydes are certainly at the forefront, but I do get the vanilla. I love it!!! Thanks for those of you who suggested this.

Time travel!! That is my number one pull into the world of perfume. So I will have fun deciding on my Friday SotD. Today’s, though, is Insolence edp. Other than smelling like a fabulous lady scent, it does not evoke former times for me. Weather today is beautiful, sunny and 73F, but though I enjoyed my walk and seeing daffodils, I can only think a big chill, with snow, will be on its way to our place soon.

I’m time traveling all the way to the Jurassic period with Zoologist Tyrannosaurus Rex today. I especially enjoy this one in the far dry at down when it wafts more softly.

Sampling Laboratorio Olfattivo Tonkade and it’s excellent. I have not tried anything from line before I don’t think. I get sweet, powdery tonkage with some smoky incense. Very good stuff. Hello NST!

It’s been a Monday of getting things done, so yay for being productive! Taking care of pre-doctor appointment paperwork online among other to-dos.

In other news, Mr. Jalapeno came home from Florida on Saturday (March 4). He had driven 9 hours on that Friday and 10 on the Saturday to get here. I don’t know if/when he will be going back, since his stepmom still has at least 1 more surgery pending that I know of (ankle replacement). So her current tally is both hips replaced, both knees replaced.

Gross content ahead: Spooky kitty had diarrhea over the weekend. I’ve put her back on the probiotic that she was on, but she had been resisting taking. Hopefully it won’t take long for her to get better.

SOTD = LUSH Orange Blossom Perfume. This plays oh so nicely with the far drydown of LUSH Lust.

I was able to sample V and Pansy yesterday at Lush. For some reason I couldn’t smell Pansy at all. I tried to sample Orange Blossom but there was a lady crowding me so I left.
      Well wishes to Spooky!

Pansy is a rather quiet fragrance, so I am not surprised that you couldn’t smell it in the cacophony of the LUSH store. What did you think of V?

Thank you for the kitteh well wishes!

      Good luck with Spooky!

What I have been using is Fortiflora, which is a powder I can mix into her gooshy food. She usually tolerates it. But there were a few days last week where she just went NOPE!

Mr. Jalapeno was in Florida for almost 2 whole months. His stepmom was not allowed to drive for 6 – 8 weeks after the knee surgery.

I am now trying to get used to wearing earplugs again when I sleep. 🄓
