It's Tuesday and the 10th day of Christmas (lords a-leaping), plus National Chocolate Covered Cherry Day. Birthdays: Lucretia Mott and John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Aftelier Candide, and I'm taking points because while it doesn't make me think of magenta, it fits the description of Viva Magenta perfectly otherwise: "brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration". Those of you who don't see perfume in color (or who hate this particular color), remember you can approach this project howsoever you like! Tea at the moment is Upton New England Chai (sent to me by a very kind reader, thank you!) with a splash of half-and-half.
Reminder: on 1/6, wear a fragrance to match Viva Magenta, Pantone's color of the year for 2023. ("Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative. [It] is powerful and empowering. It is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundaryless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement.")
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: top image shows the Bredemeijer Duet Bella Ronde teapot in Dark Magenta ("Bella Ronde is made of high-quality metal and has a double insulating wall. This ensures the temperature and flavour of the tea are retained for up to as long as an hour... The specially designed spout makes for smooth pouring with no dribble. Thanks to high-quality stainless steel, the teapot will last for years", $160 at Gourmet Kitchenworks.
Good morning! National Chocolate Covered Cherry Day is my kind of day
SOTD is Chanel 1957 for some much needed comfort on this gloomy day. Magenta is not a color I resonate with so I shall have to think about this weeks CP. The closest thing I can think of would be a bright, juicy cherry scent.
Fragrant recommendation: I’ve been sampling Les Indemodables. Their samples are generous and the scents are all interesting. I highly recommend their discovery set.
So far I really like the colognes, Escale en Haiti and Escale in Indonesie. Both really interesting colognes, fresh without relying only on citrus. EEH is supposedly a vetiver focus, but all I can smell is a salty juniper berry. It smells like the inside of an oyster shell found on the beach, if the oyster shell is juicy like a fruit, if that makes any sense. EEI is a bitter citrus with a mineralic ambergris. I really like it, but I will need to wear this one more to form more thoughts.
On the opposite end, Chypre Azural has the most amazing bitter orange peel opening that lasts and lasts. Truly delightful. It reminds of me Orange Sanguine, but more photo realistic. If OS is a color pencil rendering of an orange, CA is a hyperealistic rendering in oils.
Iris Perle, also from Les Indemodables reminds me a lot of 28 La Pausa, with the same astringent opening and a drydown to a powdery rooty iris. Might be worth checking out if you are looking for a 28LP replacement.
Ah I ended up writing more than intended! If you made it this far, thanks for reading my unsolicited sample reviews 😅
In other news, I am almost done packing all the giveaways! They will go out in the next day or so.
I appreciate your sample reviews! I’m not familiar with Les Indemodable.
Pfsh, thank you for mentioning the chocolates frankincense from Enfleurage. Very, very nice and the frankincense flavor was subtle, which makes the chocolate very enjoyable. A good treat to welcome the New Year!
Oh I’m so glad that you enjoyed them! Aren’t they delicious? I am already planning to buying a second box for myself.
I am also planning to get a second box for myself for Valentine’s day. Looking forward to it!
Wrong place, for my comment. I am sorry, Ringthing,
I also thought of a bright, juicy cherry! I have Eau Cerise by DSH which fits the bill. Aside from rose, peony and geranium, I think beetroot, rhubarb and dragon fruit work too. Tbh, I don’t think that Pantone’s Viva Magenta is magenta, so I’ll toss in raspberry, cranberry and pomegranate. Okay, I’ll stop!
Thanks for your impressions of Les Indemodables. I haven’t tried EEI nor EEH, but you’ve piqued my interest! I have tried most of the rest, and they’re very well done and definitely worth checking out.
Ooh I love the idea of beets and dragonfruit! I don’t think I have any perfumes with those notes, although beet as a perfume is tugging at a memory at the back of my mind… maybe it’ll come to me later today.
Thanks for all the ideas! I do have lots of rhubarb in Rose Ikebana (peachy pink), and cranberry in Pineward Gluhwein (burgundy red) that might work for this week.
Were there any specific scents in the Les Indemodables set that you enjoyed? I think EEI and EEH are my favorites so far, and of course Vanille Havane, that started me on the brand.
Rose Ikebana, yes! I haven’t tried Pineward yet, but they’re on my list thanks to you. Iris Perle and Chypre Azural were my favorites of the Les Indemodables I tried. Did you end up buying Vanille Havane?
Iris Perle and Chypre Azural are excellent choices! I still haven’t gotten my bottle of Vanilla Havane as the sample has been tiding me over, but I will soon! Perhaps accompanied by another one of theirs since I’m enjoying this line so much 😂
Just got an idea for the CP: Schiaparelli Shocking!
I’ve never smelled it, but Schiaparelli was all about the bright neon pink, wasn’t she?
I’ve used the Pantone Matching System for decades as a graphic designer. I don’t consider this colour magenta either… definitely a beetroot or dragonfruit! The only red in my collection is Rhubarbe Écarlate so I’m going with that!
Oh good. I think they just wimped out on using the actual color, and picked something safer.
Aha, Demeter Beetroot! But I’ll probably never find it.
I would love to see a Demeter “colour wheel” using the shade of the band that the fragrance’s name sits on. Anyone up to creating it? 🤣
Wow, that would be a serious undertaking!
I have not tried any of the fragrances, but I know Luckyscent carries many of them if anyone is interested.
Yes! I got my discovery set from Luckyscent. Most discovery sets make me balk at the $ but this one was very reasonably priced and they come in generous 3ml vials.
The first perfume I thought of when I saw Viva Magenta was Guerlain’s Samsara in the red bottle.
Oh I was just thinking about Samsara recently too — I shall have to hunt down a vintage bottle someday!
I’m wearing Oajan from PdM, which is appropriate for the season but not for the weather. Our high is in the 70s today. Still, it is quite pretty.
70s! We are at 58 right now which is impressive for 1/3.
Hi NST! Today is even drearier than the last week has been, foggy and rainy. I’m not sure when we last saw the sun but this is typical for the winter. The temperature is atypical, with highs predicted in the 60s (!)
I’m wearing a little Gris Clair. My budding perfumeista friend is coming over this afternoon to try some classics from Chanel, Guerlain, Dior etc so I don’t want to be too scented beforehand.
Same on the weather here. Gris Clair is lovely, I remember the cozy lavender and hay. Have a fabulous time with your friend! Perfume sniffing with others is always so fun.
Sounds like a fun day! Gris Clair is a lovely choice.
Enjoy your mini perfumed get-together!
Yay for a friend who might get the perfumista bug😽. Spritz those classics!!
Today it’s Hermès Amazone extrait, which has a lot of moving parts but to my nose is dominated by two things, blackcurrant and oakmoss. You’d never mistake it for anything launched in the past year, that’s for sure.
Nope, you wouldn’t.
Here’s the part of the description of Viva Magenta that really jumped out at me: “writing a new narrative”. That’s the headspace I’ve been in lately, so this week I’ll wear fragrances that are unlike anything I ever wore before I dove down the rabbit hole. 😊
My NNSOTD = Dzing!, of course.
Tea of the morning is Taylor’s Scottish Breakfast tea with Stash decaf Chai Spice to make it a little extra.
I really love the idea of writing a new narrative. I will follow you on that and wear perfumes that I normally don’t.
I’m writing a new narrative too! Perfect phrase for my outlook.
That’s a beautiful color of the year. Nice to see something so vibrant. Not sure I have any scents reflecting that color. Good lippie color.
Maybe I’ll wear Black Perfecto EdP today. I can’t spritz as much as I like, since I’ll be at work.
Getting my hair cut! Yay! It’s been only the last week or so I’ve found it irritating, so I timed it pretty well.
Love this fragrance. You smell great, even if you can’t spritz as much as you like.
Yay for the haircut!
In Serge Lutens La Fille de Berlin for the CP.
Happy Tuesday! 🌹
Yep, that one had occurred to me for this week, too. Need to see if I still have a sample (I suspect I may have thunked it).
I think La Fille is the closest rose scent to match that magenta color. I may also look for the color of bottles, even if they are not rose perfumes.
That was the first thing that came to mind for me! You smell great!
Thank you, Holly!
That one is perfect for the CP.
The color of this juice is almost at magenta!LoveLove!🌹
Beautiful scent and juice color! 🌹
Perfect choice for the CP!
Happy new year to you, pl67!
Thank you, Tulipani!
Happy New Year to you too! 🌹
Why didn’t I think of that one? I have some of it, too!
Lol! You still have time to wear it!
Joins your smack. I love this one and may just join in with it.
Well, the packaging for Lyric is *almost* that colour, although a bit more burgundy, so I’ll probably be wearing it for the CP if I ever get my sense of smell back.
Whatever this is, it’s the respiratory virus from hell. I feel as bad now as I did almost two weeks ago when it started. And the symptoms don’t go away / move through the body like colds normally do, they just add on. But, the good news is that I have two fairly solid nights of sleep behind me. And — I went to the airport on the way home yesterday, searched through their thousands of bags, and got my two missing bags, which apparently had been there since the 29th but they’d never bothered to tell me, update the online system, or messenger them to me as they said they would (yeah, right). But at least I’m reunited with my dirty laundry, my wellies, and the German flour and soap I stock up on every time I’m there!
Supposed to be planning my spring travel now, and all I can think is that I don’t want to go anywhere if it involves an airplane!
I hope you feel better soon, Ockeghem!
I wore Lyric, yesterday. I think is a close match, packaging, and scent-wise.
Glad you got your bags back! Hope you feel better soon.
I hope you feel better soon!
At least you got your bags back. I’m thinking Germany is the source of superbugs. In 2019 my husband brought home from Munich a respiratory virus that nearly killed me, I was horribly sick for six weeks. I told him when he goes back there, he has to go to a quarantine hotel for a week before I will let him back in the house.
Well, my relatives in the UK had all just been through either COVID or the flu, so I think it’s everywhere! (For the record, I think Mr. Ockeghem got it on the plane, despite being masked the whole time. It started pretty quickly after he got there; he was even thinking he could have been exposed at home.)
So the mask doesn’t work at all! Ugh. I was planning to be masked during the entire trip…
Well, from everything I’ve heard, the mask does more to protect others against any germs you have than to protect you against germs. That part seems to have worked; my UK relatives have not gotten what we had.
I hope you feel better soon!
Yay for sleep + bags! But so sorry you’re still so sick.
Very pleased to hear that you got your luggage back! But UGH, that virus!!
Totally understand your feelings about airplanes.
Harney & Sons earl grey supreme
SOTD Shalimar pure parfum
Since I adore books and volunteer at a library I really enjoyed this op-ed
Are you enjoying Shuggie Bain?
Yes I am !
So far I prefer Young Mungo..
Both are so good!
When is he coming out with another book?
I know we love perfume releases but I am wondering about good book releases ❤️
I have not read Young Mungo. I may have to check it out.
Love that article, thank you!
In case you haven’t seen this article that’s been making the rounds lately, I found it very interesting: https://tedgioia.substack.com/p/what-can-we-learn-from-barnes-and. It covers how the new CEO of Barnes & Noble is turning it around by focusing on people’s love of books, rather than merchandising.
Thanks! Very interesting article, and a mood-lifter to boot!
I thought of lupins when I saw the magenta,. They grow wild around here but in some parts of the country are quite invasive. Wearing JM Lupin and Patchouli.
What a gorgeous photo!
I love lupins too, planted a bunch at the house in BC.
So beautiful! I’d never heard of that perfume, will look it up!
Cool teapot, very Jetsons-esque. Back in Rose Cherie to enliven a dreary, foggy day.
Jetsons — yes!
SOTD is Lubin Idole, which has nothing to do with magenta but everything to do with my enjoying my winter fragrances. Also enjoying the calm before tonight’s big storm. The weather forecasters have whipped themselves into hysteria, we’ll see how it pans out.
PSA, for those in the US, Costco on-line has some interesting scents for some interesting prices. Eau d’Italie, Tom Ford, Kilian, Maison Martin Margiela. Apologies if I’m testing your new year’s resolutions
IKR? They usually have a dozen or so decent perfumes online, usually Tom Ford and Creed. This is the first time I’ve seen Eau d’Italie though. I miiiiiight have bought Jardin du Poete… for $100 instead of the list price of $170. ! How could I not buy??
Good luck with the storm!
Costco! I would never have thought!
They also have some SL Fille de Berlin, should anyone be tempted…
Happy 2023, fragrance loving friends!
Highly recommend Bodrato chocolate covered cherries to celebrate today. The best!
SOTD is a sample of La Perla Luminous which sadly is too sweet for me. Dry down is more manageable than the opening, but overall not my cup of.
I do like that magenta. More berry than wine which I prefer.
I love chocolate-covered cherries. Never tried Bodrato. I will look for it!
As will I!
You’re making me drool with the chocolate covered cherry rec! 🍫🍒
I’m in Vetiver Ecarlate. I was thinking of Rhubarb Ecarlate since it comes closer to the CP, but I don’t remember if I have a decant or just a sample and I wasn’t willing to find out today! I also thought of CdG Rouge for the beetroot, but my sample is in the giveaway pile. Speaking of which! I have a lot of samples ready for a new home. CONUS only, please. Please dibs here and send me an email at :

Hope you all enjoy your day!
Holly, hope you had a wonderful Tuesday!
No magenta today. SOTD is Coromandel. It goes well with this winter weather. I think we are over a foot of snow today. I guess I will stay in the house and watch movies or something with the hubby.
Or read a book
Enjoy the snow and snuggles with hubby in front of the TV
I am sure that I will be reading while he may take a nap.
The Weather Channel is going nuts this afternoon between your weather and nasty stuff down South.
It is finally coming to an end. We had over a foot and some towns around us received a few feet. I haven’t seen so much snow since I was a little girl.
SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP
First day back at work after a longish staycation!
As with many who mentioned it, weather is … crappy … (no other way to describe it so pardon me for saying it out loud) in these here parts.
No. 19 EDP is so far off from viva magenta but I am using Robin’s interpretation of “brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration” and so it fits!
You may see fewer IG links as I am quite possibly taking an IG posting break but every time I think it, I post even more, which then defeats the purpose. We’ll see … so far so good but we’re only a few days into the new year.
Definitely squishy here! But there was a break in the rain this afternoon.
The color of No. 19 is perfect for the scent.
I thought so too. Glad the rain let up this afternoon!
The only consolation from the wet, grey weather here is the fog over the skyline that turns the city mysterious. No. 19 is perfect for this foggy mood.
I shall miss your IG photos but it’s always nice to take a break from social!
Wearing no 5 edp today. Last year, my dad gave my other a bottle of no 5 edt and my mother said it doesn’t smell like it used to. I told her that it was probably the nitro musks that were taken out and that’s why it doesn’t smell as good to her anymore. So she gave it to me, unopened. Why refuse even if I have tons of no 5 any way?
I like the edt better than the edp. My first love of the No. 5s is still L’Eau.
I am wearing Guerlain L’Heure de Nuit today and drinking my third cup of Himalayan Spice tea.
You smell great!
L’heure de Nuit is lovely!
I’m still on holiday, I’m starting to get used to it, I’ll be really settled into new routines just in time to go back to work on Monday.
I’m meeting a cousin for lunch today, we live only about 10 miles apart, but we generally meet around once a year when my mother visits. Arranging lunch is a huge achievement so early in the year
It is supposed to be quite warm today, so I’m thinking of something very summery like Le Temps d’Une Fête.
Hurray for summer weather! Le Temps d’Une Fête would be perfect.
Hope your lunch was fun! And of course, sorry you have to go back to work next week.
I’m wearing Musc Panache today
Glad to see you back, Lucas! Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! It’s lovely to see you here!
Lucasai! Great to see you!
Kayali Vanilla. If you squint, the color of the juice might possibly be a hue of magenta…lol.
It’s a pretty color, but not one I gravitate towards.Give me blinding yellows and the darkest of aubergine purples!!
Is it beige? 🤣
Oh I love aubergine. Especially in a lipstick or nail polish. Sadly I don’t wear either anymore.
I’m wearing a sort of magenta scent, Plum in Cognac. Hoping the rain lets up as I need to go to the post office later…
You smell wonderful! Good luck with the travel this week!
Thanks! Movers just picked up my furniture, looks like they will deliver next Tuesday, woot!
You smell wonderful. To date, this is my only Scents of Wood FB.
Thanks! I really enjoyed the Praline in Maple yesterday. I have about 10 of the 10ml sprays, plus 3 of the full size bottles: Cypress in Oak, Sandalwood in Oak and Vanilla in Bourbon.
That definitely looks like the Jetson’s teapot, as someone mentioned above. I think it’s adorable!
I’m in Tea for Two which is nowhere near magenta on the color spectrum, but that’s what I went for. It’s teapot Tuesday, so there’s that, too. Finally got an appointment for Moby on Thursday.
Was doing laundry at the laundromat and heard a couple fisherman talking. Apparently, a “tweaker” (their words, not mine so don’t get all riled up) was down at the docks trying to steal gas. These two burley men decided to teach him a lesson, tossed him a giant archaic crab trap, hoisted him up with a winch and started lowering him over the water. He was screaming, they were yelling, kept lowering him until he was up to his knees, then told him if they ever saw him skulking around the docks again, they were going to feed him to the fish. There seemed to bit a lot of lifting and dipping as the mayhem continued. They finally hoisted him up and over land, unlocked the crab pot, and he departed rather quickly. No troubles since.
I had to look up the word!Lol!
Maybe it sobered him up a bit for the rest of 2023,too.
It’s a word for folks who use methamphetamine. These addicts will often engage in petty (or not so petty) crime to support their habit. It’s a very common addiction everywhere in the US-from big cities to small rural areas. Often they can be identified by the scabs (especially on the face) in various states of healing because they pick their skin a lot. Also, if meth is inhaled it ruins their teeth and you have what’s called “meth mouth.” Not pretty, but a very real problem here.
A big problem here at the store with the thievery.
They move through the aisles very quickly and haphazardly high as heck grabbing what they can.
Yes, and when people are that high or that desperate to get high, nothing is off limits. Be careful up there, lillyjo!
Gotta love a burly fisherman.
Well minus the fish smell. Lol
They don’t mess around. This is an open carry state, and when I was in the ice cream shop on New Years Day (lined up with just about everyone else in coastal Washington!) the owner was armed. Just facts, no opinions, because I don’t want to start anything that would ensure Robin gives me the boot! There is very little crime here, though….and the fisherman did confirm that petty thievery is very rare. I think the kid got off lucky. Come work over here and then you don’t have to worry about hoodlums!
Heh! Those fishermen sound like some of my cousins.
They are certainly SOMEONE’s cousin! I wouldn’t want to get in their bad side, that’s for sure. 😬
Love it! I bet that put him off!
Now that’s a story! 😯😄
I’m wearing Lush’s Tank Battle today. This morning I had a fabulous yoga class, which is great because this afternoon I am doing one of my least favorite things – waiting for people to call me back.
I am so hopeless about perfumes and color. Is there such a thing as anti-synesthesia???
I really do think some people have something like anti-synesthesia — they just don’t smell things that way. But use the description, or anything…a memory of something that color, even.
OR, skip it! I did not mean to add to the pressure, nobody should worry if they don’t do a cp!
I don’t see color either. Mostly I smell perfume as a mood or feeling.
Then go for the mood in the description rather than looking at the color! We don’t have any rules.
SOTD is Black Saffron because of the raspberry note, but it’s not smelling very “magenta” to me.
I’m dreading going back to work tomorrow, I think I will make it a WFH day though, especially with the storm coming tonight/tomorrow.
Better safe than sorry with a winter storm coming in!
I vote wfh!
That teapot looks like it is the same color as LUSH’s Rose Jam shower gel!
Posting while I can today. I got my second COVID booster earlier this afternoon, and my arm is starting to ache. Not sure how hard the shot will hit, so I am taking things easy.
SOTD = back in Iris Torrefie.
I hope you get mild reaction. I am skipping the mRNA and trying to be veddy veddy careful.
So far all that has happened is a mildly sore arm. I am rather surprised by this!
I hope you continue to feel ok!
I went to the dentist and the grocery store and now I’m home being licked by cats and wearing Infusion d’Iris Absolue.
Sistine, if there is such a thing as anti-synesthesia, I have it too. Also the one where people can match music or authors to scent. I can’t do any of that except at the most basic level.
I don’t think it matters. You can go for any of the descriptions of the color, even just “a stand-out statement”.
Hi, popping in to say I’ve done the common thing and worn Ta’if today for the CP. This was the first bottle of OJ I bought and it was in London at Harrod’s! I don’t wear it often enough. I’m about to go out now for some errands and think I’m going to go have a late lunch at my local favorite Vietnamese restaurant. Pho, anyone?
I love pho since it can be spicy seasoned to taste and for me, that means no spice.
Oh, pho! Just the thing on a chilly day! I’m with you in spirit! 🍲
I also had Vietnamese food for lunch!
Pho, yes please!
Rosa Sur Reuse works for me for the project but mostly because I felt like wearing it today
Good enough reason!
Stopping by commando with a bit of whine. I know some of you have been in the same place: must donate/pass along/purge items from dear family members that just don’t get used in our life. Sent off some boxes of household goods and bags of old bed clothes today. The one bright spot was that I had some almost rag handmade quilts from who know how long ago. I thought they’d go to the animal shelter, but a lady at the Salvation Army said, Oh, you’d be surprised that people will buy these! That made me happy. And then the Sun peaked out at the end of the day. I wouldn’t call myself a hoarder, but I am extremely nostalgic! I will press on…
I’m right there with you in nostalgia land. It’s hard to let go.
During the Christmas blizzard I made my son go through his room and we got rid of so much of his old school stuff. He kept saying ” but mom these are memories” I said you didn’t even remember they were here. Of course he kept a few things. It helped me rethink some of the odd things I have been holding on to.
Our basement has long since reached hoarder status; I am working on it, but slowly, and it is hard!
sotd = Chanel No. 5
numéro cinq edp for me. I got a waft of the “peach fuzz” note today. It doesn’t smell of juicy sweet fruit, leans more to the dry, furry, musky feel of the skin of the peach. Makes me happy.
Well, I tried OJ Champaca for the CP this morning, but to me it’s more bright pink satin than magenta velvet, so no go. Then I thought about copying hajusuuri because she made a good point above and I love 19 EFP anyway, but then my eye fell on Soivohle Journeyman and I remembered it has a bit of a cola note that might skew magenta if I squinted my eyes. It’s closer, but now I’m thinking that Paracelsus might be my best bet — it’s a gorgeous deep dark rose that definitely isn’t like anything else I’ve ever tried, and that’s fairly consistent with the description of Viva Magenta.
So interesting, I love Champaca, never thought of it as bright pink satin!
Robin, that’s the perfect teapot for this week’s CP! I have a few teapots, well, actually I think I started collecting them, but I had to draw the line fairly quickly on that particular item. They take up so much room!
Tea this morning was Numi breakfast blend.
I was commando today for an eye doctor appointment, but after seeing Lyric mentioned , that seems a good way to end the evening. Maybe it will counteract a case of the blahs contracted after an entire day of ☔️
Hope you sleep the blahs off and wake up to sunshine!
Thank you, lillyjo!
I have the same 3 teapots I had 10 years ago (probably, just guessing) but I do seem to end up with more tea cups than I need. They are among the many things I am hoping to purge this year!
Blahs here too!
Late today. For the most part it has been an uneventful day. Whew. My sotd is Jour d’Hermes absolue. It’s been late winter/early spring weather here. ( rainy and in the high 30’s)
I am certainly not complaining!🌞
There are worse things than uneventful, especially when you smell so lovely!
Jour is so pretty!
