Tuesday scent of the day 1/3

Posted by Robin on 3 January 2023 170 Comments

It's Tuesday and the 10th day of Christmas (lords a-leaping), plus National Chocolate Covered Cherry Day. Birthdays: Lucretia Mott and John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Aftelier Candide, and I'm taking points because while it doesn't make me think of magenta, it fits the description of Viva Magenta perfectly otherwise: "brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration". Those of you who don't see perfume in color (or who hate this particular color), remember you can approach this project howsoever you like! Tea at the moment is Upton New England Chai (sent to me by a very kind reader, thank you!) with a splash of half-and-half.

Reminder: on 1/6, wear a fragrance to match Viva Magenta, Pantone's color of the year for 2023. ("Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative. [It] is powerful and empowering. It is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundaryless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement.")

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows the Bredemeijer Duet Bella Ronde teapot in Dark Magenta ("Bella Ronde is made of high-quality metal and has a double insulating wall. This ensures the temperature and flavour of the tea are retained for up to as long as an hour... The specially designed spout makes for smooth pouring with no dribble. Thanks to high-quality stainless steel, the teapot will last for years", $160 at Gourmet Kitchenworks.

Good morning! National Chocolate Covered Cherry Day is my kind of day :)

SOTD is Chanel 1957 for some much needed comfort on this gloomy day. Magenta is not a color I resonate with so I shall have to think about this weeks CP. The closest thing I can think of would be a bright, juicy cherry scent.

    —

Fragrant recommendation: I’ve been sampling Les Indemodables. Their samples are generous and the scents are all interesting. I highly recommend their discovery set.

So far I really like the colognes, Escale en Haiti and Escale in Indonesie. Both really interesting colognes, fresh without relying only on citrus. EEH is supposedly a vetiver focus, but all I can smell is a salty juniper berry. It smells like the inside of an oyster shell found on the beach, if the oyster shell is juicy like a fruit, if that makes any sense. EEI is a bitter citrus with a mineralic ambergris. I really like it, but I will need to wear this one more to form more thoughts.

On the opposite end, Chypre Azural has the most amazing bitter orange peel opening that lasts and lasts. Truly delightful. It reminds of me Orange Sanguine, but more photo realistic. If OS is a color pencil rendering of an orange, CA is a hyperealistic rendering in oils.

Iris Perle, also from Les Indemodables reminds me a lot of 28 La Pausa, with the same astringent opening and a drydown to a powdery rooty iris. Might be worth checking out if you are looking for a 28LP replacement.

Ah I ended up writing more than intended! If you made it this far, thanks for reading my unsolicited sample reviews 😅

In other news, I am almost done packing all the giveaways! They will go out in the next day or so.

Pfsh, thank you for mentioning the chocolates frankincense from Enfleurage. Very, very nice and the frankincense flavor was subtle, which makes the chocolate very enjoyable. A good treat to welcome the New Year!

I also thought of a bright, juicy cherry! I have Eau Cerise by DSH which fits the bill. Aside from rose, peony and geranium, I think beetroot, rhubarb and dragon fruit work too. Tbh, I don’t think that Pantone’s Viva Magenta is magenta, so I’ll toss in raspberry, cranberry and pomegranate. Okay, I’ll stop!

Thanks for your impressions of Les Indemodables. I haven’t tried EEI nor EEH, but you’ve piqued my interest! I have tried most of the rest, and they’re very well done and definitely worth checking out.

Ooh I love the idea of beets and dragonfruit! I don’t think I have any perfumes with those notes, although beet as a perfume is tugging at a memory at the back of my mind… maybe it’ll come to me later today.

Thanks for all the ideas! I do have lots of rhubarb in Rose Ikebana (peachy pink), and cranberry in Pineward Gluhwein (burgundy red) that might work for this week.

Were there any specific scents in the Les Indemodables set that you enjoyed? I think EEI and EEH are my favorites so far, and of course Vanille Havane, that started me on the brand.

Rose Ikebana, yes! I haven’t tried Pineward yet, but they’re on my list thanks to you. Iris Perle and Chypre Azural were my favorites of the Les Indemodables I tried. Did you end up buying Vanille Havane?

Iris Perle and Chypre Azural are excellent choices! I still haven’t gotten my bottle of Vanilla Havane as the sample has been tiding me over, but I will soon! Perhaps accompanied by another one of theirs since I’m enjoying this line so much 😂

Just got an idea for the CP: Schiaparelli Shocking!

I’ve never smelled it, but Schiaparelli was all about the bright neon pink, wasn’t she?

I’ve used the Pantone Matching System for decades as a graphic designer. I don’t consider this colour magenta either… definitely a beetroot or dragonfruit! The only red in my collection is Rhubarbe Écarlate so I’m going with that!

Hi NST! Today is even drearier than the last week has been, foggy and rainy. I’m not sure when we last saw the sun but this is typical for the winter. The temperature is atypical, with highs predicted in the 60s (!)
I’m wearing a little Gris Clair. My budding perfumeista friend is coming over this afternoon to try some classics from Chanel, Guerlain, Dior etc so I don’t want to be too scented beforehand.

Today it’s Hermès Amazone extrait, which has a lot of moving parts but to my nose is dominated by two things, blackcurrant and oakmoss. You’d never mistake it for anything launched in the past year, that’s for sure.

Here’s the part of the description of Viva Magenta that really jumped out at me: “writing a new narrative”. That’s the headspace I’ve been in lately, so this week I’ll wear fragrances that are unlike anything I ever wore before I dove down the rabbit hole. 😊

My NNSOTD = Dzing!, of course.

Tea of the morning is Taylor’s Scottish Breakfast tea with Stash decaf Chai Spice to make it a little extra.

That’s a beautiful color of the year. Nice to see something so vibrant. Not sure I have any scents reflecting that color. Good lippie color.

Maybe I’ll wear Black Perfecto EdP today. I can’t spritz as much as I like, since I’ll be at work.

Getting my hair cut! Yay! It’s been only the last week or so I’ve found it irritating, so I timed it pretty well.

Well, the packaging for Lyric is *almost* that colour, although a bit more burgundy, so I’ll probably be wearing it for the CP if I ever get my sense of smell back.

Whatever this is, it’s the respiratory virus from hell. I feel as bad now as I did almost two weeks ago when it started. And the symptoms don’t go away / move through the body like colds normally do, they just add on. But, the good news is that I have two fairly solid nights of sleep behind me. And — I went to the airport on the way home yesterday, searched through their thousands of bags, and got my two missing bags, which apparently had been there since the 29th but they’d never bothered to tell me, update the online system, or messenger them to me as they said they would (yeah, right). But at least I’m reunited with my dirty laundry, my wellies, and the German flour and soap I stock up on every time I’m there!

Supposed to be planning my spring travel now, and all I can think is that I don’t want to go anywhere if it involves an airplane!

At least you got your bags back. I’m thinking Germany is the source of superbugs. In 2019 my husband brought home from Munich a respiratory virus that nearly killed me, I was horribly sick for six weeks. I told him when he goes back there, he has to go to a quarantine hotel for a week before I will let him back in the house.

It started pretty quickly after he got there; he was even thinking he could have been exposed at home.)

SOTD is Lubin Idole, which has nothing to do with magenta but everything to do with my enjoying my winter fragrances. Also enjoying the calm before tonight’s big storm. The weather forecasters have whipped themselves into hysteria, we’ll see how it pans out.

PSA, for those in the US, Costco on-line has some interesting scents for some interesting prices. Eau d’Italie, Tom Ford, Kilian, Maison Martin Margiela. Apologies if I’m testing your new year’s resolutions ;)

    Happy 2023, fragrance loving friends!

Highly recommend Bodrato chocolate covered cherries to celebrate today. The best!

SOTD is a sample of La Perla Luminous which sadly is too sweet for me. Dry down is more manageable than the opening, but overall not my cup of.

I do like that magenta. More berry than wine which I prefer.

I also thought of CdG Rouge for the beetroot, but my sample is in the giveaway pile. Speaking of which! I have a lot of samples ready for a new home. CONUS only, please. SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP

First day back at work after a longish staycation!

As with many who mentioned it, weather is … crappy … (no other way to describe it so pardon me for saying it out loud) in these here parts.

No. 19 EDP is so far off from viva magenta but I am using Robin’s interpretation of “brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration” and so it fits!

You may see fewer IG links as I am quite possibly taking an IG posting break but every time I think it, I post even more, which then defeats the purpose. We’ll see … so far so good but we’re only a few days into the new year.

The only consolation from the wet, grey weather here is the fog over the skyline that turns the city mysterious. No. 19 is perfect for this foggy mood.

Wearing no 5 edp today. Last year, my dad gave my other a bottle of no 5 edt and my mother said it doesn’t smell like it used to. I told her that it was probably the nitro musks that were taken out and that’s why it doesn’t smell as good to her anymore. So she gave it to me, unopened. Why refuse even if I have tons of no 5 any way?

I’m meeting a cousin for lunch today, we live only about 10 miles apart, but we generally meet around once a year when my mother visits. Arranging lunch is a huge achievement so early in the year :)

That definitely looks like the Jetson’s teapot, as someone mentioned above. I think it’s adorable!

I’m in Tea for Two which is nowhere near magenta on the color spectrum, but that’s what I went for. It’s teapot Tuesday, so there’s that, too. Finally got an appointment for Moby on Thursday.

Was doing laundry at the laundromat and heard a couple fisherman talking. Apparently, a “tweaker” (their words, not mine so don’t get all riled up) was down at the docks trying to steal gas. These two burley men decided to teach him a lesson, tossed him a giant archaic crab trap, hoisted him up with a winch and started lowering him over the water. He was screaming, they were yelling, kept lowering him until he was up to his knees, then told him if they ever saw him skulking around the docks again, they were going to feed him to the fish. There seemed to bit a lot of lifting and dipping as the mayhem continued. They finally hoisted him up and over land, unlocked the crab pot, and he departed rather quickly. No troubles since.

It’s a word for folks who use methamphetamine. These addicts will often engage in petty (or not so petty) crime to support their habit. It’s a very common addiction everywhere in the US-from big cities to small rural areas. Often they can be identified by the scabs (especially on the face) in various states of healing because they pick their skin a lot. Also, if meth is inhaled it ruins their teeth and you have what’s called “meth mouth.” Not pretty, but a very real problem here.

They don’t mess around. This is an open carry state, and when I was in the ice cream shop on New Years Day (lined up with just about everyone else in coastal Washington!) the owner was armed. Just facts, no opinions, because I don’t want to start anything that would ensure Robin gives me the boot! There is very little crime here, though….and the fisherman did confirm that petty thievery is very rare. I think the kid got off lucky. Come work over here and then you don’t have to worry about hoodlums!

Stopping by commando with a bit of whine. I know some of you have been in the same place: must donate/pass along/purge items from dear family members that just don’t get used in our life. Sent off some boxes of household goods and bags of old bed clothes today. The one bright spot was that I had some almost rag handmade quilts from who know how long ago. I thought they’d go to the animal shelter, but a lady at the Salvation Army said, Oh, you’d be surprised that people will buy these! That made me happy. And then the Sun peaked out at the end of the day. I wouldn’t call myself a hoarder, but I am extremely nostalgic! I will press on…

I’m right there with you in nostalgia land. It’s hard to let go.
During the Christmas blizzard I made my son go through his room and we got rid of so much of his old school stuff. He kept saying ” but mom these are memories” I said you didn’t even remember they were here. Of course he kept a few things. It helped me rethink some of the odd things I have been holding on to.

Well, I tried OJ Champaca for the CP this morning, but to me it’s more bright pink satin than magenta velvet, so no go. Then I thought about copying hajusuuri because she made a good point above and I love 19 EFP anyway, but then my eye fell on Soivohle Journeyman and I remembered it has a bit of a cola note that might skew magenta if I squinted my eyes. It’s closer, but now I’m thinking that Paracelsus might be my best bet — it’s a gorgeous deep dark rose that definitely isn’t like anything else I’ve ever tried, and that’s fairly consistent with the description of Viva Magenta.
