Thursday scent of the day 12/15

Posted by Robin on 15 December 2022 126 Comments

It's Almost-Friday, Bill of Rights Day and National Cupcake Day. Birthdays today: Gustave Eiffel, John Hammond, Edna O’Brien. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Guerlain Après L’Ondée, for the character Anne Elliot, in Jane Austen's 1817 novel Persuasion.

Reminder: 12/16 is Jane Austen's birthday. Name a favorite Jane Austen novel (or movie, or television series) and wear a fragrance to match, or, wear a fragrance to register your general lack of interest in Austenmania.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Dakota Johnson as Anne Elliot in the 2022 Netflix version of Persuasion, directed by Carrie Cracknell.

    Wild Bluebell
Still on my Jo Malone kick after the flu.
Some Austen character has to be a “wild bluebell” contender.

Trying out some Olivia Palermo eye shadows.

As I mentioned before, yesterday was my last day volunteering at the library until the New Year. I am both sad because I love the library, but mostly because its a nice distraction from the holidays. Anyways..boo hoo.

Jo Malone is perfect for Jane Austen. I never cared for Wild Bluebell on me, but I am guessing it is fabulous on you.

Before you know it the new year will be here and you will be back at the library.

Winter has definitely set in so I’m in all warm things all the time, looks like. Today is CSP Vanille Ambre, so lovely and cozy that even a normally scent-averse co-worker said I smelled nice. Which I do!

For the most part they’re very simple and uncomplicated, but appealing, with excellent lasting power (I can still smell Vanille Ambre eight hours after applying it). Vanille Abricot and Amour de Cacao are particularly wonderful, the former smelling like dried apricots dipped in caramelized vanilla sugar and the latter like a pan of brownies. Absolutely worth a try if you’re ever in a Sephora.

I’m wearing Un Jardin Sur Le Toit, for 1996 version of Emma. To me the whole movie had a spring-like vibe, and Sur Le Toit is to me the most spring-like fragrance that I own.

Cold, cloudy day. Waiting for heavy rain to arrive this afternoon and stay with us until late tomorrow.
It has been a very busy month at work. Coffee and more coffee to the rescue.

Emma is the JA book I remember reading and at least part of Pride and Prejudice, and I love movies and series of Austen books (Ciaran Hinds as Captain Wentworth is my favorite.) But I have been looking through my decants and finding things I forgot I have, so JA pairings have taken a back seat. Wearing 10 Corso Como today, there are just a few sprays left and it smells so good!

I’m wearing Iroaz for Jane Bennet, whose character is described reasonably well in P&P but whose inner thoughts are not as thoroughly explored as Elizabeth’s are. I think the gentle roses and sea breezes in Iroaz would suit Jane.

I was browsing through Jane Austen’s house and came across this ring, which really took my fancy. It was interesting reading about its journey from Jane Austen to US singer Kelly Clarkson and back again. Like everything, a replica has been made , available in the gift shop. Wearing By the Fireplace ( also a replica) for all the interiors, specifically Northanger Abbey.

SOTD is Dior J’Adore because I adore Jane Austen. Years ago I treated myself to the Penguin clothbound edition of her books. I have a vague memory that I heard about them here… but who knows. My memory gets more vague with time :)

Having lunch today with a friend, outdoors (brr) because she is deathly afraid I might give her covid even though I’ve assured her my tests have been negative for over a week. She is nervous about catching covid from me and bringing it to her elderly mother next week. Rolling my eyes here because her mother actually HAS covid, right now. I think she ought to worry more about catching covid from her mom, honestly.

After today, I am “done” through the end of the year!

Yesterday, I took the train into the office. I knew that particular train was going to be crowded but I spotted a two-seater where the inside seat was empty. The person sitting on the aisle seat pretended not to hear me so I tapped her on the shoulder. Grass grows faster than how this person reacted. First, who me? Yes you. Then it’s the head swiveling to see where there could be other seats. None. Then get up r-e-a-l-l-y slowly like molasses with hemming and hawing (did I spell this right? 😍). Once she and I both sat down, there was the noisy adjusting of her bag. I just looked at her really sweetly and said she needs to move so my coat is not trapped underneath her &@$?!:; (I didn’t say it, just winked). I’m glad she did not protest much because I was not in the mood for a b-tchfest.

I encountered a clueless person at one of the grocery stores yesterday. She had a full sized grocery cart that was blocking egress from the self checkout lane I was in.

I politely asked her if she could move her cart so I could get out. A slow realization that yes, she WAS a roadblock. And then “Oh yeah…”

I was at Trader Joe’s and received compliments on my perfume from three strangers. It’s been a long time since that happened – I guess everyone around here is in a Tauer mood today. (Or else two sprays was an overspray?)

Trying a sample of Tobacco Cider from indie company Hendley Perfumes, which is of course already sold out because #indiesmallbatch. I hate the dilemma of having to order an expensive perfume blind or accept you will miss out because so few bottles are available. I’ve decided I won’t play any more. So I’m just enjoying my free sample. If he ever makes another batch (the last one was in 2019) I *might* buy a bottle.

I appreciate small batch perfumery but it is really annoying when samples aren’t available ahead of time before the release so you can’t test it out before it sells out. This happens a bunch with some indie houses and I choose not to explore their stuff because the FOMO can get really $$.

      Tobacco Cider sounds delicious though!

Very cold this morning. Maybe the coldest so far, but the sun is peeking out between the high thin clouds so maybe it’ll warm up a bit.

I was at one of my usual parking/sleeping spots this week when I was approached by an elderly man who said “I see your van here a lot…” Of course, conversation ensued and he told me about his son who also has a van and “goes all over the place…” Anyway, we talked about vanning for a while then he pops up with, “You know, I’m 85.” No! I didn’t know, and he doesn’t look a day over 60. “Yep, I’m in good shape and healthy as a horse. Just sold everything and I’m moving to Mexico!” He was so thrilled by his decision, he was telling complete strangers! 😍 I was delighted by him! 85 and hell yeah! He’s doing what he’s probably wanted to do for years! Kudos to him!

Also talked to a nurse from another hospital system who said that they (the nurses) were gifted with a bag of cookies for the holidays. One bag for each unit and the packaging states expiration in 2016! 🤣 I can not even begin to make this stuff up…

Anyway, I’m in Le Lion 🦁 just because. Smelling fine and very ready to leave this noisy traffic filled place. Hoping everyone has safe and stressless days leading up to Christmas.

And a huge Happy Birthday to the GOAT Edna O’Brien. Have always loved her writing, her wit, and her bravery. Not a book I haven’t read of hers that hasn’t left me weak with the magic of it. Open one of her books and new worlds pop out, some as gentle as a bubble, some like a bomb that rips your heart to pieces. ❤️

Really, it’s an absolute disgrace. There are no “shortages.” What it is is management making millions of dollar at the cost of patient safety. Won’t go on about it, since I have in the past and people are sick of me, but this is the main reason I’m done in one more year. I’d rather work at a 7-11.

I am now twinning with you. Going to the beauty counter the lady at Chanel said “you look like a Le Lion gal” so I let her spray me. Then at the hair salon, my lady said I don’t want to cut your hair too much because I love your lion’s mane. So its been a lion day after all. I thought after having the flu this scent would kill me, but I am wearing it just fine. Have a good day twin!

Oh, I’ve gotten “unbelievable” before, lol. But sadly, these things I get so emotional about- either laughing hysterically to avoid crying and being so fuming mad I may spontaneously combust- are all too true true. BTW, I saw a snippet of a bunch of criminals brazenly stealing clothes until either the police or security did a flying leap to tackle them! I wanted to clap with delight! I also wish I could send them your way (the good guys, not the bad ones!) so they could tackle a few or your stores worst customers! It’s a sad world when the criminal has more rights than the victim, more legal representation, and can monetize his illegal behaviors. Ugh!

We actually went to a local theater troupe’s play last night called The Wickhams — Christmas at Pemberley. It takes place “downstairs” at Pemberley and has fun with what might have happened between Lydia and Wickham down the road from Pride and Prejudice (along with a few other characters). It was quite fun, even if partly just because I enjoy live performances in a small venue and it’s been a while. Anyway, I wore just a smidge of Nez Ambre e Levres, maybe Elizbaeth would wear that?

Earlier in the week, I wore MFK APOM Elixir which I can see sweet Jane Bennett wearing. Mostly I’ve been working on Christmas gifts, mailing boxes and cards, etc. Whew. I wish it could be a bit lower key, but Mr. SP is all about Christmas and traditions, etc. I try to meet him at least halfway.

Lovely pick today, Robin! I did not even know that Netflix had come out with a new version of Persuasion. I might give it a go, in spite of misgivings about casting (Dakota is much too beautiful to play Anne) and styling (red lipstick!?! and that hairstyle?!?)
Ok, I will unclutch my pearls now.

SotD is the old gents’ favorite, Tabac, for Col. Brandon, who was discussed yesterday. I imagine this would wear well with flannel waistcoats. 😉

I watched it in the same way I watched the newer Emma: as an enjoyable costume drama. If you are looking for a true-to-the-book version of Persuasion, you will not find it in the Dakota Johnson version. It’s more like something “inspired by” Persuasion.

Thank you, Robin, that’s very helpful. I like your way of putting it: “inspired by.” Sort of “Jane Austen Lite?” Ok, I can go with that attitude. 👍🏻

I have been AFK ;) as my daughter might say. Mini She-ra came down w/ Covid last Friday. :( I thought she had it in August and just kept testing negative but maybe not…I tested her on Friday after school and it lit up like a Christmas tree…the pink line showed up immediately :) She is doing better but is tired and has the cough. Her temp today was still 100.2. I called her doctor’s office b/c that’s several days w/ a temp and the nurse called me back. She said 100.4 or less is not a real fever. 100.5 to 102 is a low temp and 102 and above should be treated w/ a fever-reducing med…which I do do. ;) So I would be curious what any clinicians think but she basically said not to worry about the low temp unless it goes up or her symptoms worsen. Mini She-ra has also lost her sense of smell but says she can taste food…but smell is so linked to taste that I imagine she a reduced sense of taste right now too.

I masked Fri-yesterday but couldn’t take it anymore and am maskless today b/c I got samples in the mail. ehaeheh ;) I ordered Meringa from Osswald which I never tried and just doused myself in it. Very nice. Lemony jasmine, orange blossom and vanilla. The price of a full bottle is…less than ideal…eahehaeh ;) but I shall ponder it. Which brings me to a PSA (no affiliation just get their emails) that Osswald has 25% off w/ code FESTIVE through 12/21.

Mr. She-ra and I have no symptoms. so far. Mr. She-ra had Covid in July so perhaps he has some immunity. I have never had it to my knowledge or tested positive so perhaps I will sidestep the pestilence one more time…🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m wearing the Winter 22 from Ffern, mostly because arrived in the mail yesterday, but I can reverse engineer it to the CP. It works quite well for Captain Wentworth in Persuasion. It opens with citrus and a bouquet of herbs, as a English gentleman might wear as cologne. But there is a distinct seaweed note in the drydown for our naval captain.

Tea today was F&M’s Countess Grey thanks to the very generous AnnE who surprised me with a bunch of tea bags of it (among other things). So I now have some good tea at my office.

I am now a proud aunt of an adorable niece. She really did not want to emerge (my poor sister) so we can rest assured that our family’s stubborn irish streak is continuing down the line. :) Thank you to everyone who sent well wishes the other day!

    Here’s a good customer service story…
I ordered a sweatshirt for my son as a Christmas gift. It was delivered yesterday and I could immediately tell it wasn’t going to fit. This morning I put in a request for an exchange. Within 5 minutes I received an email with a order number for a replacement sweatshirt in the correct size ( the sizing error was mine) there was no charge and I was told to keep the first sweatshirt. I couldn’t believe it!
The company is Teepublic. I had never ordered from them before but I will again.
My sotd is Flowerbomb Ruby Orchid.
