Thursday scent of the day 12/8

Posted by Robin on 8 December 2022 181 Comments

It's Almost-Friday and National Brownie Day. Birthdays: Camille Claudel, Diego Rivera, Sammy Davis Jr, Gregg Allman, Jim Morrison, Mary Gordon. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Hermès Violette Volynka.

Reminder: on 12/9, wear a fragrance with a leather or suede note, if you have one. (This is a repeat from 2016.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown is one of the promotional brand images for Hermès Violette Volynka.

Happy Thursday y’all! I’m in Mimosa Indigo for cp points. Another summer-ish weight suede.

I’m nearly done decorating my place; need some tea lights and it’ll be ready. The new pup isn’t at all sure about wreaths. I hung one on the door to the porch last night. This morning, she growled at it. Never seen Christmas decorations, poor thing!

Headed to a Skechers outlet today for tennie runners. There are holes in the ones I have, so they don’t owe me anything, as my mom used to say. I have hard to fit feet, so I hate shopping for shoes.

Anyone else hate shopping for shoes? Any other phrases you can remember your mom saying? I’m missing mine this morning.

Another shoe-shopping-hater here. It has been a very long time since I last ventured into an actual shoe store — have gotten pretty good at online shoe shopping, and the related shoe returning.

And I agree with LTSG — your mom will be on your shoulder, whispering in your ear and helping you quell the shoe salesman when he/she insists that something ridiculous “fits you just right”. 👟

Ahh, a kindred spirit! Yeah, I’ve definitely heard those words in shoe stores.
My mom had difficult feet to fit too, so she understood. 😇

I have terrible hard to fit feet and I hate shopping for shoes, too. Skechers are a brand that often fits me, hope you find just what you want 😊 My mother still says “wear something on your head” whenever I leave her house in cold weather.

Me! I hate shoe shopping. So hard for me to find shoes that fit well and also look stylish. I was just thinking about Mom and some of her sayings the other day. If I can remember a good one, I’ll add to my post. Hugs. I miss my mom, too.

I bet I know where that Skechers is. I hope you find something that works for you! That’s funny what your mom said. One saying I associate with my mom is “Bosoms up!”–which she said HER mom said to her if she was slouching–something I’m prone to do. It’s funny how often it comes to me.

Hope your pup becomes accustomed to the wreath!

I went to the one at the outlet mall at 290 and 99.
I love your mom’s admonition! My dad used to rap us between the shoulder blades and tell us to throw our shoulders back. “Be proud of your height!” I heard that a lot. He was right!

My dog is spooked by the outdoor lawn decorations. So funny when we walk by them and she looks nervously and swings wide toward the edge of the sidewalk.

      I hate shopping for furniture.

I know I’m butting into a dog conversation, but I can’t tell you how excited my cats are by the falling leaves out on the porch. I swear I’ve picked up a dozen of them inside in my kitchen because the cats love to toss and “catch” them like quick little mice!

Sort of a shoe-a-holic here. My feet aren’t too hard to fit other than being a size 6 and having difficulty finding my size. But if the arch support isn’t there, it’s not coming home with me!

I’m a size 6 too, which is often the sample size. I have scored tons of expensive shoes at cheap sample sales, back in the days when Nordstrom’s did those. Sadly, they don’t seem to do them any more.

I have to buy almost everything online. Even if a line carries a size 5, it’s hardly ever available IRL. Not even Nordstrom! They used to be great for small sizes. And petites. But I‘m not opening that can o’ worms! 🙄

Sampling Regime des Fleurs Leather Petals today! So far it is green bitters and something sweet, no leather yet but I shall wait for the drydown.

Diptyque advent calendar day 7: mini Cannelle candle, which didn’t smell of much when lit. Maybe slightly fruity and spicy?

My sense of smell is not the best this week though (mildly congested).

QUESTION FOR THE COMMUNITY: Where are you getting Chanel decants nowadays? I remember when they were easily found, but decant sites stopped carrying them circa 2016.

This leather week got me missing Cuir de Russie really bad! Happy to trade for/purchase a lil decant of CdR and/or Coromandel if anybody would like to spare a few drops 😊

As far as I can tell, Chanel has stomped down hard on “traditional” decanting services (Surrender to Chance, The Perfumed Court), so I have abandoned trying. There might be some evil bay or facebook outlets still providing decants, and hopefully someone here will chime in with that kind of info.

Yes I remember when they all just disappeared! Seems like they are still clamping down hard as even the newer decant sites (scentsplit, decantx) don’t carry them either.

Years ago, Chanel got snotty and went after the decanters and pretty much made them stop doing decants. It sucks because you can find some on ebay but I don’t trust ebay when it comes to Chanel.

This morning I went to a for an intimate gathering of the Virginia Wolf exhibition at NYPL. What a life she had. Many of her diary entries were on display, as well as some photographs. I am embarrassed to admit I have never read any of her books! Gasp!

I have used that combination before and liked it. Are you using body creams or combining the colognes? I never combined the colognes. I always use one scent for the body cream or lotion and one for the cologne. The Jo Malone also has combinations they recommend as well if you want to look on there.

I agree with Ringthing on the creams. You really have to massage it in, but it isn’t greasy. I always had the orange blossom available and then tried several of the others. For some reason I find the orange blossom went with a lot of the other scents so used that one the most.

The stars aligned for me today — after realizing very late last night that I had forgotten to include Equistrius in my leathers count, and now learning that today is National Brownie Day, the only scent choice for me this morning is of course Equistrius for its cocoa note.

Yesterday afternoon I decided to compare the current-ish Cabochard against a little decant of a vintage 80s version, and wow what a difference. I could definitely tell they were trying to be the same scent, but the vintage is so much more of everything — more galbanum, more leather, more sandalwood … and the juice in the more current bottle, by contrast, is wan and weak and thin. So sad.

Interesting. Is yours the EDP by any chance? The bottle I have is EDT and now I’m wondering if the wan-ness is more a function of strength rather than year.

Nope, it’s the edt. Portia reviewed it on Perfume Posse earlier this year and I bought a bottle on eBay for about $12. When I want a green leather chypre, it’s just right. Maybe it’s my nose that’s wimpy! 😘

Stella today. I have a derm appointment — tried to go yesterday as I had it in my head on the wrong date. Ugh. Redo this morning. But on a happier note, see below.

I often wear gourmand-ish fragrances and I do like spice and woods so see below for a baking related project if interested:
I’ve been doing a little pre-Christmas baking, just some recipes I’ve been wanting to try. If any of you are NYT Cooking bakers and you like things a little off the beaten track, definitely try the Gochujang Caramel Cookies from Eric Kim. We loved them – they are basically sugar cookies with an interesting caramelized spicy streak. It would make a great fragrance! (Happy to send the recipe to anyone interested as well. You can reach me via my screen name above.)

Update on my not very interesting, low stakes loss of a sample that arrived empty in a discovery set I ordered from Arquiste: After three emails from my email account, I finally sent one directly through the Arquiste website. Got a reply the next day. They were gracious, and yesterday I received a whole replacement discovery set (I had only asked for the one sample to be replaced) that had two of the samples I needed replaced, plus the others I had ordered originally, plus a very nice handwritten note with a discount code. N.B. I had also, when I ordered the discovery set, order a full bottle of Architects Club. And golly the samples are good. . . . maybe I could use another fb. . . . ;-)

I’m in the cheap as chips (from discount sites) Boucheron Santal de Kandy. I have an enormous bottle so if anyone wants a decant (CONUS, sorry!) please let me know. Its a woody floral with cardamom. Lists black pepper in the notes, but I don’t get any at all.

From my samples, I really like Peau and Indigo Smoke. I actually also enjoyed testing Nanban, Infanta en Flor, and Flor y Canto, but they wouldn’t be my first choices for FBs. Ironically, the one I think I like the least of the bunch is Flor y Canto (just too much tuberose for me unless very very gingerly applied). I remember really liking L’Etrog (not the Acqua one, which didn’t work for me) when I tried it years ago. I own an FB of Ella and a travel spray of Misfit. Haven’t yet tried AD. The Architects Club is a holiday gift for my son. :-)

Hermès Galop today after a couple of days in Kelly Calèche. Saving my queen bee leather for tomorrow.

Will admit I’m in a bit of a foul mood. Got the huge tree. It’s up. Was leaning, so we adjusted after much sniping and snipping at each other. Put the lights on finally…a job I really despise. As I was putting bulbs on, I noticed it’s leaning again. I give up. We’ve put wedges and tried all sorts of fixes. I think we have to undo how it’s set and redo completely. Which means house is a mess of decorations laying about.

I think the foot is going to be put down…hard. We’re going fake with lights already on it from here on out. Between the tree, messy garage and mess inside, I’m just a ball of irritation. Thankfully, I’m heading to work. So will escape for awhile. And I will smell good. Small favors.

Oh, and I have to dig through boxes to find china cups and saucers for a tea I’m attending on Monday… At least I’ve settled on table decor. Letting my inner Grinch out, so I get rid of it and can enjoy the season as I usually do.

Sorry to hear about the tree! It’s always romantic in concept to get a live tree, but it truly is a mess and hassle. I have a fake one and it is always a breeze to set up. I do like the smell of a live tree but that can always be replicated with a well-placed pine candle 😂😂

Ages ago, my Mom got tired of perpetually vacuuming up fallen needles from live Xmas trees. Between that and fear of fire hazard, my Dad bought a top of the line artificial Xmas tree for her.

Fast forward 50 years or so, and my brother still has that tree. It hasn’t been assembled for a while, though.

    SOTD = Chanel No.5 L’Eau

… from my beautiful red bottle ❤️

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl6nHcEuuKB/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Saw my next door neighbor again this morning after chatting with her yesterday. It is only remarkable because I can go weeks without seeing her at all. So she asked me if I was working from home today and I said yes. I added that I was off tomorrow and she proceeded to ask if I was going anywhere. I suppose I should be glad that she is showing interest but golly, it felt like a judgment of some type even though I would hope that she did not intend to do so! Is Mercury in retrograde?

It’s funny, since I just wore the 2020 Rhinoceros earlier this week, I am noticing some similarities, probably because of the inclusion of some tobacco and booze notes. I prefer this one though! With Rhinoceros you have to go through that first hour of .

Lovely photo! Love the monochromatic lavender.

Like any Doors fan, I visited Jim Morrison’s grave on a cold rainy April day while in Paris, plus was dumbfounded and delighted by all the literary glitterati buried there. We spent hours walking around, paying our respects to the dead giants of the art world, taking photos of the sculptures, head stones, and mausoleums. I stumbled across the Holocaust Memorial there and almost cried. I had just gone to a lecture by Elie Wiesel a few weeks before leaving, and jeez, it just hit me hard. Here’s one of the starkly beautiful sculpture I saw:

    https://www.flickr.com/photos/jmgphotos/4861124906

If you ever go to Paris, Pere Lachaise is a must see, even if you don’t care a whit about dead people. You will be moved.

As for SOTD, I’ve not decided yet. Of course, MVP and MT are calling my name but I think I’ll go with SL Cuir Mauresque for the CP.

Pretty much every city to which I traveled with Newark Museum always stopped at a Holocaust Museum if it is within bus transport distance.

Speaking of Elie Wiesel, I got a letter from him my senior year in high school when I did extra credit work on the Armenian Holocaust. I don’t even remember what I wrote but it must have moved him to write to little old me.

SOTD is Diana Vreeland Daringly Different from a sample I’ve had for awhile. Iris, oud, and leather. Not so great to start, but nicer drying down. A lot of the DV scents are bargain priced now that they’ve been discontinued, but this one is harder to find, just my luck. Will mull it over. Sampling Devastatingly Chic on the other hand, which is a nice carnation scent. A little easier to find. Has anyone had any luck with a discounter called Fragrance11?

Update on the Guerlain Millesime Tonka fiasco–I finally got an email from Guerlain today that they are refunding my money. Still bummed not to have a backup bottle, but still feeling lucky to have a bottle at all.

So I decided to try “rose leather” today, and it has not worked out terribly well. I started with Bottega Veneta, then added Roísín Dubh on top. Interestingly, they seem to cancel one another out! Roísín Dubh is delicate enough that that does not surprise me, but usually BV hangs on to me with a vengeance. Very interesting. Perhaps tomorrow I will try Roísín Dubh with Cuir de Russie — but I’m not sure I can bring myself to combine CDR with anything else. Also, we are taking a friend to lunch tomorrow who has a lot of sensitivities and health issues, so I probably will be commando until the afternoon.

I see that other people are baking; while trying to find something on the very overcrowded baking shelf in our pantry cupboard, I came across a King Arthur sweet bread mix that has been in there for a while. It’s the kind of thing – an almond filled pastry ring – that I generally think of as something to make when hosting or attending a brunch, which we haven’t done in eons. Therefore, I’m going to make it today and slice it as buns; I hope that we can freeze some of them. Of course, they may taste kind of blah, but I suspect they will still be sweet and good with coffee.

I thunked a small decant of Jorum Studio Trimerous today which leans heavily on orris and suede. Yesterday I wore my comfort leather, Cuir Ottoman, because I was stressing about work in the morning. Feeling a little better about work today but it’s still stressful times. Looking forward to my time off at the end of the month.

I’ve been running a little late all day today. Not sure why.

SOTD = Smell Bent Hungry Hungry Hippies EdT, from the Sample Stash. I am wearing my brownies today instead of eating them. “Pot brownies” is a rather accurate description of the first 3 hours wearing this one. Currently it has morphed into a powdery dark cocoa & patchouli scent with a bit of weed lurking in the background.

Interesting about your scent! I don’t recall ever trying it.

As to your question about the colleague leaving, it was unexpected to me because of the when he’s leaving versus the fact that he is leaving. In hindsight, there were signs.

My whole store smells like pot.
I don’t think I would like that in a perfume.

At least with the perfume the weed is not burning. A lit spliff is a different kind of smell…

I’m wearing Narciso for Her L’absolu.
4 more hours to a day off! I have to tackle the rest of my Christmas shopping.
