It's Friday, National Fritters Day and the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. Happy Birthday to Britney Spears! Our community project for today is Ancient Resins...wear a fragrance with a significant resin component, or one inspired by ancient history. Thank you Desirae for the suggestion!
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
Me: I feel almost vaguely human but I'm still pretty sick considering I'm on day 7 (WaPo: So far, this flu season is more severe than it has been in 13 years). So far I have zero interest in wearing fragrance.
Reminder: I am way behind. I will come up with more Friday projects as soon as I can.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I am CP compliant in Autoportrait by Olfactive Studio. This is from a discovery set. It has both Elemi and Benzoin.
Glad to hear you’re at least sort of on the mend, Robin. This bout of flu sounds more than usually miserable.
No community points for me today: I was going to dig out something super resiny but then I caught sight of TF Black Orchid and that was that. It’s the perfect balance between weird (earthy-truffly, vaguely corrupted) and comfortable (warm vanilla and dark dark flowers), exactly the sort of thing I love. I was lost the very first time I smelled it.
Love Black Orchid, you smell fabulous.
Black Orchid is one of my very favorites. Now that you mention it, I think I will wear it this weekend. BTW you smell wonderful!
More healing vibes to you Robin.
Wearing Aftelier Ancient Resins Body Oil.
Having my third cup of coffee and a slice of bread with PB&J.
Happy Friday!
Ooh, you smell great! And healing vibes to Robin from me too; the flu is rotten.
I wore Aftelier Ancient Resins at bedtime last night and intended to wear it again this morning for the CP, but then I remembered the neglected decant of Kerosene Broken Theories twiddling its thumbs in the back of the perfume shelf. So gloriously resin-y and incense-y. My decant spray head is very wonky, and there’s not much left in there anyway, so maybe Santa will oblige this year? 😊 Also wanted to thank Jalapeño for her extra rabbits yesterday — much appreciated!
I have very little self-control, apparently — “Santa” just obliged. My intent is to wrap the bottle up for Christmas, but the free samples are fair game! 😆
Hey, you waited half an hour 😂
That IS the important part, yes. 🤣
LOL. 🙂 The power pause before you succumb.
Hope that those rabbits will do you some good this month!
I hope so too!
Turns out my Fzotic sample pack has Vetiverissimo, which includes “sacred resins” as well as vetiver. Nice!
I have only had this on for a bit, but so far I love it. It is giving me a cold cream smell that I usually associate with ylang ylang. Anyway, I feel very relaxed.
Mmm you smell great. I love that one too.
I’m lolling about in Cuir Mauresque, the notes of which are, according to Kafkaesque- “[Egyptian Jasmine] amber, myrrh, burnt styrax [resin], incense, cinnamon, aloe wood, cedar, civet, nutmeg, clove, cumin, musk, mandarin peel and orange blossom.”
Crazy crazy crazy night and I’m so HAPPY it’s my Friday. I’ve been worried about the Baby T-Rex in this cold but she’s staying quite snuggly warm in her fleece topped off with a puffer. She gets under the 0* sleeping bag and it’s like a little oven in there! 🔥 Every time I come to take her out, she’s so warm and cozy I feel like crawling into the bed and ditching the rest of my shift. She doesn’t like getting up and going out into the cold in the middle of the night and who can blame her? I let her stay snuggled last night. 😊
Happy FriYAY!
You smell DIVINE. Hang in there, it’s almost the weekend.
Never tried that one but it smells amazing.
Sounds amazing, rather.
Wow, that’s quite a note list for that perfume! I recall trying it once or twice and liking it. In my memory it had the sort of dark stuff but also a sweet aspect. But I must look for some and try it again!
You smell fantastic. So nice to think of T-Rex snuggled up warm in bed.
Robin, so sorry you’re still sick 🙁 I hope you feel fully human soon.
I’m super CP-compliant in Aftelier Ancient Resins. I’ve nearly finished my little sample of it, sadly. Lovely while it lasted.
Does anyone know if Arielle Shoshana Friday is planned to come out as a travel spray? I’m hoping that she will remember how much perfumistas appreciate small sizes, and I would very much like to have a Friday travel spray to go with my Saturday and Sunday. Her website doesn’t seem to be selling any travel sprays at all anymore, which I find troubling. And, has anyone tried Friday? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.
You can email her and ask.
I tried it in the spring or summer – it is lively and cheerful, but there’s a humid powder thing happening that doesn’t suit me at all, so I gave away my sample.
If you haven’t tried the 3-day weekend set, I think it’s worth the money. I really liked Sunday (smooth and bitter). Saturday gave me the same problem as Friday, if I recall.
Interesting. I have and love Sunday, and have and like Saturday, which is why I didn’t want to pay for the sample trio. I really hate powder, so I’m slightly worried, but I like Saturday, so maybe I’ll like Friday too!
The extra samples make for nice stocking stuffers!
I don’t think that any of the Arielle Shoshana perfumes are going to have travel sizes going forward. Just the 100mL bottles and samples.
Ack! Heartbreaking 😥
You might want to confirm that info.
Just did my Candle Day run. It was cheaper this year than last year. Bought 10 candles. Did I need them? Not really, I want my house to smell nice. Wearing Kyoto today.
A friend just told me the website now implements a queue! As long as it turns out better than getting T Swift tickets, I guess that’s probably a good thing, but I’m glad you were able to get yours!
They do have a queue. After the 2020 fiasco, this is a much better way. I didn’t have to wait too long. Wish I was able to snag Lavender and Linen but they were sold out.
ooh any favorite scents from the haul? I haven’t explored B&BW’s catalog but am a huge fan of scented candles
My favorites are Winter, Frozen Lake and Tree Farm.
Le Labo Labdanum 18, which is a real snuggler of a scent. A little raspy up front, but kitten fur after that.
My son woke up crying twice last night, so I’m draaaaagging through this Friday. I’m looking forward to putting up our Christmas tree tonight, though, as my husband has a strict “no trees before December” policy and made me wait nearly a whole week to do it.
I bought the shower gel of that and very much enjoyed it. Maybe another bottle is something Santa (ha ha) can bring me!
Oh, good idea! I never think of luxury body washes, but I bet this one would be great.
Good to know about LL Labdanum 18. I am always on the lookout for a really good kitten fur scent. 😸
Definitely fuzzy on me! And lasts forever.
Commando. Twinning with Robin all around. Wondering if my flu shot I got earlier this autumn was placebo.
Sorry for you Robin. I can empathize. Rest up and go we will get back to perfume soon
Sending continued healing vibes to you and Robin.
Get well soon
Healing wishes to you both. Sounds like a particularly nasty flu bug.
Hope you feel better soon.🤗
Wearing Jubilation 25, which has myrrh and labdanum in it.
Oh really? I hadn’t realized that! Yay!
You smell great!
Wearing Amouage Opus VI today, it’s chock full of resins. Thanks for the CP this week, Desirae, I have thoroughly enjoyed it.
Going with my husband to see the hip surgeon today, where they will probably schedule a hip replacement. I feel bad for him, he’s in so much pain, but it would be nice to have a year where neither of us has surgery.
My dad suffered for years with terrible hip pain and had both replaced within the same month. After the surgical pain resolved he said he didn’t know why he didn’t do it sooner. Completely pain free, and hoping it’s the same for Mr. ringthing after he’s all healed up…just sent this to a friend who’s undergoing bilateral hips himself next month. Probably not something for the Mister to see, though! 😂
https://www.instagram.com/reel/CjdvG4jPo3p/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
We have heard that from others, too.
Yes, my first hip replacement was in 2004, and it has lasted well all this time, and I never had a problem with it. I felt the same way: why had I put it off so long?
Calypso, I need to have a hip replacement. How long did you need someone to help you?
About a week, though it might have been helpful for longer. One of the harder things will be washing your feet and getting socks and shoes on, though they do give you equipment to help with that.
Thanks Calypso, I’m glad yours has been a good experience. Is your knee replacement on the same side?
Yes, and that did slightly complicate my knee repair but only after I broke my femur on that leg! The surgeon put a rod into my thigh and had to make it shorter due to the rod from my hip prosthetic.
Wow, you have really been through it. 🌹
Best of luck to Mr. Ringthing!
Thanks! His surgery is scheduled for February and they are putting him in pain management until then so that’s a relief.
Sending you both positive vibes <3
Thanks Koyel!
Joining others in Ancient Resins. Happy Friday, all!
Happy Friday back atcha!
I’m in Coromandel, and it’s so good on a cold winter day. It’s clear and crisp here, and this is just the right scent for the temperatures. I think this scent is work appropriate cause I bought it with my Christmas bonus a few years ago-so it’s kind of like scented PPE 🙂
Hope everyone feels better soon, and has a good weekend ahead of them.
Carole
Have a great weekend, Carole, you smell wonderful.
Feel better soon Robin!!
As it turns out, I don’t own anything resinous. Instead, I am in the last drops of my white whale scent, Hasunoito by Di Ser. Delicious foresty agarwood and bitter citrus peels on me. Will I splurge on a full bottle? We’ll see how good the Luckyscent holiday sales are!
I just stocked up on 2ml decant atomizers and would like to swap small decants for fun. If you see anything interesting in my DECANT AVAILABLE list (https://www.fragrantica.com/member/1023681#customs), feel free to shoot me an email at: m e [at] p i r a t e f s h [dot] n e t (without the spaces). I can do a max of two 2ml decants per person. I am open to swapping for any interesting scents, but am especially interested in niche fougeres. CONUS only please.
Hope y’all have a good Friday! Diptyque advent calendar day 1 was a small Feu du Bois candle, which smells of a fireplace. Not my favorite but will save it for an especially cold day!
I love Feu de Bois, but then I love all wood smoke scents pretty much.
Me too, more and more!
Ooh, I shall have to keep you both in mind if I encounter another smoky scent in this calendar!
Do you not like resinous scents, or just don’t have any on hand? Hope you don’t mind me asking.
Not at all! I think I just haven’t found one that was full bottle worthy.
When I burn incense, I gravitate towards wood chips rather than resins, so that might just be where my tastes lie 🙂 Any resinous fragrances you would recommend for someone who is not familiar with many?
Well, it depends on what you’d call resinous. If incense perfume falls into that category for you, there are so many to try that it’s an embarrassment of riches.
Some starter incense perfumes I would recommend are Goutal Encens Flamboyant, and JM Myrrh & Tonka.
Ambers can also be considered a resin and there are tons of choices there. The OG Opium, EL Cinnabar, and SL Ambre Sultan are three that come to mind.
Labdanum is another resin. It hangs out in quite a few perfumes, and reads similar to cinnamon to my nose. A controversial choice for that is TM Womanity. It’s a labdanum bomb on me. Be warned that it is higly dependent on personal chemistry! Some people smell ashtray or worse with that one.
What have you tried?
Can you provide examples of niche fougeres? I ask only because I don’t categorize perfumes in the “traditional” types.
Yes that’s a totally fair clarification!
I’m thinking aromatic and herbaceous scents (lavender, rosemary, pine, cypress, woods etc), but not straight up typical barbershop-y scents. Chanel Paris-Edimbourg is one that I am enjoying that fits the bill. Another that I have my eye on but haven’t smelled is Hiram Green’s Arcadia.
Hope that clears things up!
SOTD is lightly applied Papillon Anubis: ancient resins + ancient references. Ingredient lists seem to vary: Myrrh, frankincense, labdanum. My nose isn’t skilled enough at resin detection to tell me for sure what is and isn’t there.
Thank you for the suggestion! I was starting at my perfume this morning in puzzlement. It’s working well with today’s wintry weather.
Darn! I should have worn my Coromandel for resins today.
SOTD is She Was An Anomaly.
Have a good weekend everyone!
SOTD = Tauer Les Annees 25
CP-compliant with benzoin. Superb! Heard it was discontinued so I am treasuring my bottle. No IG picture yet.
Why did I pick this besides the fact that it has resins? Today’s Countdown ornament has a drawing of a 🦁. I was originally going to wear Le Lion but that pairing is not challenging enough IMHO.
Today, for the first time since masks were no longer mandated on the trains, I saw one conductor with his mask on! The passengers were mostly unmasked. I reneged on a commitment to attend the Rutgers Christmas Concert. The reasons I gave were: 1) it is usually packed shoulder to shoulder, 2) the audience sings and I am not about to wear a mask to avoid whatever may be swirling about, and 3) the ventilation is questionable – it’s held in a beautiful old church but I don’t trust whatever may have been done, if any. I will meet them for dinner anyway after the concert. My friend also found a taker for my ticket!
Sounds like a good decision. You smell wonderful!
Have fun at the dinner! And you smell great.
Oh boy. No more masks on the trains? 🤧🚂
Enjoy your dinner tonight!
I’m wearing Messe de Minuit this morning. Cold, cloudy, and it’s supposed to rain later, so I think I’ll make a fire. I have lots of wood to get through, my next door neighbor cut down a tree 2 years ago so the wood is nice and dry now.
Love the smell of wood smoke, enjoy your fire. Your perfume is perfect.
Enjoy your fire! I am going to follow your lead in Messe de Minuit, and we will smell wonderful.
Wearing Wazamba today, tons of resins. Still hiding out at home as I don’t want to take a risk, although I feel 90% normal. The dog and I are cuddled up happily.
Glad to hear that you are feeling much better!
Sampling Nobile 1942’s Malvs today for the CP because it lists frankincense and myrrh in the notes, among others. I get a lemon oil top note, that I think may be coming from the combination of pink pepper, frankincense and cypriol oil. That, along with the identifiable pink pepper note makes this almost a “fresh” amber to my nose. Overall the scent is rather delicate and diffuse, and weak. . I wish it were a bit stronger. The scent is lovely (reminds me of my Lubins), but it is an immediate skin scent.
Tea today is Earl Grey. Wanted an old standby while I work on an all-consuming work project.
Sometimes frankincense itself has a lemony aspect to it.
In Nanban from a discovery set I ordered during the recent sales. I remember recoiling when I sniffed it years ago during a visit to Lucky Scent. Oh what a difference a few years makes!
(In petty complaining news–my discovery set was to hold 5 perfumes of my choice, 1.5 ml sprayers. One of the perfumes came split in two daubers, and another was completely empty. I’ve written to Arquiste about the empty one, twice. So far, no response. I will live.)
That sucks! I hope it eventually gets replaced. I loved Nanban when I first smelled it, but after ordering a decant, there was some note in it that drilled a hole into my brain, haven’t tried again yet.
Ooh you smell good today! Have you tried their new one — Indigo Smoke?
I have tried Indgo Smoke and really like it, worth sampling imho.
I’m starting Saturday with a spray of Rêve d’Ossian from Oriza L Legrand. This is from a set of samples a friend gave me from his trip to Europe three years ago. He was lucky with the timing, this was just as Covid was starting to appear. This is a lovely light incense, with nearly every ancient resin I can think of.
It’s on my list of maybe purchases, and getting closer to the top of the list each time I wear it 🙂
Reve d’Ossian is gorgeous.
I was commando this morning since I had a Guerlain event .
It was amazing, i had a consultation with a specialist, after lots of questions and talking, she recommended three perfumes for me, Rose Chérie, Oud Nude and Iris torréfié . I loved them all !! I got the Rose Chérie body lotion and they engraved it for me. It was really nice to finally attend a perfume event.
I will go to another one this evening where I will meet the perfumer of Imaginary Authors Josh Meyer. I am not too familiar with his fragrances though, is there anything you would recommend from this line.
Lots of people like Memoirs of a Trespasser, and Fox in the Flowerbed. Josh is a sweetie, and based in Portland like me. Your Guerlain event sounded wonderful!
I called Etiket in Montréal to order a signed bottle and they handed the phone to Josh so I could speak to him in person! How awesome is that? I’m thrilled, wish I could be there in person.
That -is- awesome!
Sounds like a wonderful event! I hope you love the Rose Cherie! (And I’m a bit envious — I do not live in a place where such events happen.)
How exciting! I love Rose Chérie and am looking forward to trying the body lotion. I wish I could be there for the Etiket event, I ordered a bottle of the new one, In Love with Everything, they are giving soaps as a gift with purchase. I have Fox in the Flowerbed, Memoirs of a Trespasser, Cape Heartache, Yesterday’s Haze, Falling Into the Sea and Whiff of Waffle Cone, plus several that are now discontinued.
Woow, thank you. I will try all these. I wish you were here too, we could have gone together.
I told Josh your name, hope you get to talk to him, he sounds really nice.
What fun! Have a good time tonight. Memoirs of a Trespasser is in my top five favorites. All my other recs have been mentioned, I will add Slow Explosions to the list.
What a lovely experience at Guerlain! I’m using the dozen samples they gave me on my visit to the Las Vegas boutique to alternate with samples of other houses for this year’s “Scented Advent” blog posts. Rose Cherie is in the mix, but I won’t know when until I pull it out of the pretty bag they gave me (yes, I did make a purchase). Have fun tonight!
Wow! What a bunch of perfume awesomeness!
I talked to Josh the perfumer on the phone and told him you’d be coming. 🙂 Have fun!
thank you so much, unfortunately i didn’t have a chance to talk to him, there were so many people. The event was interesting and so much fun .
That’s quite a day of perfume fun!
I’ll add Saint Julep to list of recommendations from IA.
I completely agree! That one is so much fun to wear.
That sounds very fun! I love Iris Torrefie; it steadily worked up to my top ten or maybe even top 5.
Oh, how much fun! I love Rose Cheri from Geurlain. As for the Imagainary Authors scents, my favorites are the two that Foxbins mentioned. Josh is always so nice. I have emailed him a few times regarding his scents. He gives wonderful customer service. Did you end up purchasing anything from Imaginary Authors?
I’m in PMC Musk Extreme today. No resins in this, but ironically, I’ve been in some resin-ish fragrances all week: LADDM, Sideris and CJ Scents Cherry Incense and Pacifica Spanish Amber. I just never got around to posting about them! 😊
Happy Friday all! We’re just about to make it through another week.
Sounds like a good perfume week!
I went with Anubis and just realized it fits both angles of the CP. It’s got resin notes and is based on ancient history. Yesterday was the wonderful Myrrh Ardente.
I’m looking to place a Lush order soon because I don’t want to miss out on Lord of Misrule again this year after waiting too long to buy it last year. I’ll also grab the 10ml perfume of LoM. Based on NST feedback, I think I’m going to go for Sticky Dates too but not Blood Orange or Mango. What do y’all think of Hot Toddy? And free shipping over $60, so maybe I need a bottle of Rose Jam on hand too…
I thought Hot Toddy was okay, lots of spice, but I fell in love with Sticky Dates and bought that. Rose Jam is a staple.
Thanks, I’m still on the fence with Hot Toddy. I want to use it while it’s fresh and I may already have enough cold weather shower gels (I definitely will after I add LoM and SD) to get to it this winter. And yeah, Rose Jam is always a good choice so I’ll probably throw one of those in too.
Lord of Misrule comes in a 10mL perfume spray now?? 😲
Yes, I think as of just a week or two ago.
Feel better, Robin!
Smelling splendid in Shalimar Tonka today. 🥰
You do smell splendid indeed. 🙂
I am in Dzonghka today. Our sunny morning is rapidly greying; I feel snow on the way.
More wishes of wellness for Robin, LTSG, and anyone else who needs them.
You smell fabulous!
Oh, Dzongkha is one of my favorites!
Back in Ambre Sultan and ready for a nap cozy 😴
“Nap cozy” – more ready than I thought!
Lol! It sounded good to me!
“Nap cozy” sounded like a dedicated blanket for napping under to me, so it made sense.
I’m a sleepy little tea pot…
I do have a dedicated nap blanket. 🙂
😊😊😊
Robin, I’m so sorry you got hit so hard with the flu. Glad you’re feeling a bit better but please take it slow. Sending positive energies into the universe for your return to good health along with a big 🤗.
When the weather turns cold, I put away my favorite Eau Des Merveilles and bring out my second favorite, Elixir Des Merveilles. With its Siam resin, Peru balsam and incense, it’s my choice for today’s cp. I ❤️its orange peel note, and this fragrance layers very nicely with BBW’s Snowy Citrus Swirl.
Now that our November birthdays, Thanksgiving prep, hosting and cleanup are finally over, and a few presents bought, I’m looking forward to a mostly leisurely holiday decorating weekend. Our only event is one of my favorite ones that has finally resumed after two years’ pandemic absence, Empty Bowls. Hosted at our local community college, it features a simple lunch of soup and bread cooked by students and is a fundraiser for our local food pantries. Pottery students donate bowls they’ve made for the event; there are various auctions; and usually a folk singer or group to entertain. It’s a wonderful community event in the spirit of the season. Hosted globally, if you’re interested, you may be able to find an event near you. https://emptybowls.com/
Wishing all a beautiful weekend ahead! 🎄
We had one near us hosted by a local ice cream maker!!! buy the artist made bowl and help yourself to their fabulous ice cream!!! Win-win if you ask me! Always good to support those in need in our community.
Bengale Rouge, for the myrrh and sandalwood. I don’t think I love this though. May end up in the next swapmeet.
Turkey leftover pot pie for dinner tomorrow!
Anyone getting ready for their annual review at work? My manager isn’t very communicative throughout the year, so I never know how these are going to go.
Well, I lucked out that my pick for today’s “Scented Advent” post on my own blog was 4160 Tuesdays’ Amberama, which has both amber and labdanum. CP points for me for the resins! I’m really enjoying it; it’s a light, warm, woody amber with some unusual additions of black pepper, raspberry, and iris. I know, it sounds weird, but it works.
I’ve been trying out various fitness classes at our local YMCA, so I can choose a few that I really like and will keep attending. So far I’ve liked them all except Pilates. I think I’ll try Zumba tomorrow, wish me luck!
Wishing you luck with Zumba! I used to love this class pre-pandemic and the one I took still has not resumed since the shutdown. I’ve yet to search out another and I really miss it!
I loved Zumba at my Y when it was taught by a dancer — her choreography was a joy and I loved how my non-dancer self felt while doing her routines. I stuck with it for a couple years, on and off, after she left, but the other teachers did not have her gift; I was sweaty but bored, the music was too loud, and I decided I’d rather be on an elliptical, listening to an audio book. I hope that you love it and have a good instructor — it did help me become more active!
You smell great!
I put up another batch of Xmas lights today, this time on the inside. The Aha! moment idea I had for hanging them up worked like a charm. Much more pleasant than being out in the elements. 😉🎄 It looks pretty good!
SOTD = Smell Bent TEN EdT. I blind bought this during their closing sale, and it’s one that has worked out. It’s a peppery frankincense on me. I did think about a bit of Ancient Resins oil, since I still have some from Elisa P. But the new-ish bottle demanded skin time, so here I am.
Enjoy your festive lights – I love to see them, although I am lazy about decorating.
Thanks, I am! They are so cheerful and happy-making. 🤩
You’re getting to be a decorating pro! I have to get the tree up pretty soon.
I used to put up a lot more lights… lighted garlands on the stair rails to the front steps, lights on the juniper shrubs in front of the house, lights on the forsythia bushes, and lights on the juniper shrubs by the patio. Plus lighted wreaths inside.
All that went away in 2009.
Hey, Elisa gifted me some Ancient Resins too! She’s so k8nd; I miss her voice in these parts.
Not sure what that numeral 8 is doing there…
I’m a copy-cat of Foxbins today for the CP win, in Messe de Minuit. I have the square label version, which is very enjoyable and can even push through the preparation of dinner including sauteing some onions and celery for vegetable soup. 🙂
I think all of that smells great, even the sautéed veggies! 🥬🧅🥕🧄
My sotd is Prada Candy Night, because of the benzoin. I didn’t even know that it is a resin. I just copied from a few people this week.
It’s my Friday and can’t wait to sleep in tomorrow. I have to work until midnight tonight so I will be plenty tired.
You smell wonderful and I hope you have a nice lazy day tomorrow.
Oh yuck! That’s a seriously late night. 😩
Hope all you people with viruses fell better soon.
I am wearing SJP Stash with has olibanum. I have a lot of incense and resinous scents, I find them so comforting.
