It's Black Friday! And I slept in, sorry! (It's also Native American Heritage Day, plus we have a few birthdays: James Agee, Jimi Hendrix, Bill Nye.) Our community project for today: pick your Black Friday poison...wear the last fragrance you bought, wear a cheap thrill, or wear a fragrance you love but refuse to buy in a full size because it's too expensive. (We've done this project several times.)
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm in Monocle + Comme des Garçons Scent One: Hinoki — I've been making do with decants for years.
Reminder: oops, we're fresh out of Friday projects. I'll refill the jar over the weekend.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the Piggy Bank in Sterling Silver is $2500 at Tiffany.
Shalimar Tonka since it’s the last scent I bought. Not a cheap thrill, but certainly a good value.
Off to work, which was calmer than I expected on Wednesday…yay! Leaving at 4 pm so we can go to our town tree lighting.
The pile of pots and pans in the kitchen are staring at me. I rinsed and organized. Hoping my husband does the rest. If not, it’s okay. I’ll deal with them tonight. And we only made two dishes….
Twins!
Triplets!
My most recent purchase is Black Walnut, one of the limited editions from American Perfumer. It’s sort of green, sort of nutty, maybe slightly floral and really not like anything else I own
That sounds nice, I really like nutty perfumes and there aren’t enough of them.
Wearing Shalimar MT to bed this morning. Yesterdays beautiful weather is gone baby gone..! Snow predictions here starting Monday and through the week…🥶 Just rain for the moment, though.
Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday yesterday! 🦃 I did take advantage of the sales stock up my skin care favorites and a replacement camp chair for the one that went “missing.”
Have a relaxing weekend all!
The relaxing starts here tomorrow!

I’m in Elizabeth Taylor’s Passion, which is definitely a cheap thrill. I picked my bottle up at one of those perfume stores that has boxes to the ceiling and tons of old stock do I’m not sure of the age of the bottle, but it seems to have plenty of oomph still.
I watched a video by SuperDacob. He said the vintage version of Passion is pretty amazing.
I am wearing a sample of Byredo Mojave Ghost. It is quite nice but I have a lot of stuff similar to it, not sure I will be moved to purchase.
I have been working my way through a bunch of samples. I think I like the hunt for new perfumes at least as much as buying a full bottle. I am sticking to my 2 bottles a year limit so now scouting out for 2023.
After a lot of “meh” trials, I did find a perfume that knocked my socks off, Maison Francis Kurkdjian Gentle Fluidity Silver. I love the juniper crispness at the start, evolves into something of a comforting skin scent but still so good. The bottle is expensive but I have to say, the stuff lasts. (That is one of my major complaints of most of the perfumes I tried, they may be affordable but fade out so fast. And most fade into something I did not like, either.)
I have the day off but lots of stuff to do around the house and job related work I cannot put off. It should be relaxing day – we have enough leftovers to avoid cooking.
I know exactly what you mean by enjoying the hunt as much as the buying 🙂
I recently tried and quite liked Mojave Ghost. Please tell me, what others is it like? I didn’t find it similar to other things I know. But if it is, and some are less expensive, I’d love to know!
It reminded me of Heretic Scandalwood in the drydown. Notes for Mojave Ghost listed as top= Ambrette, nesberry (whatever that is) middle= magnolia, sandalwood, violet and base =cedarwood, musk, vetiver. So I guess maybe I am picking up the musk and sandalwood.
Heretic Scandalwood is not a cheap thrill in my view though whenever I wear it, I think I should wear it more often. . A real cheapie which may not have same notes but *feels* like a good close-to-skin scent like Mojave Ghost is Glossier You.
You say “cheap thrill” and “fragrance” to me, I say, “Tabu, of course”. Very cheap and very thrilling, just an excellent scent — a rich floral bouquet dominated by spicy carnations, a lush base of patchouli and benzoin, *almost* too much, the inspiration for any number of oriental scents in the decades to follow. So much better than it has any right to be.
You’re making me curious to try a recent version since I just have a vintage splash bottle. It’s a magnificent fragrance.
Tabu is a great choice.
You smell amazing, I have two 20 or 30ml vintage bottles and I should wear this scent now that it is colder.
Sotm is CdG Serpentine, a fleeting but lovely green scent for a for a very rainy day.
I’m not seeing any Black Friday must haves (yet) and there’s some relief in that.
Yay for saving money!
Today I’m not on CP, I’m wearing Bottega Veneta Eau de Velours to double-check if it needs to be voted off the island. I succumbed to temptation and bought Hiram Green Arcadia last night at 15% off. Now I need to make room in the perfume cabinet but I have a hard time letting anything go, even those that rarely get wear-time.
The BV will stay! Back to the drawing board.
Does 1 have to leave the island?
I think SOTD, when I get there, will be AS Sunday, which I got in the initial funding campaign and so qualifies as a cheap thrill. I am eyeing that AS discount (plus I have the 3-day weekend $ to use), but I can’t decide which one I should get an FB of, because I love them all.
But my first scent today will be ammonia. I put the oven racks in a bag to clean last night, and need to scrub them now.
Took today off work and I’m going to be cooking (and running the errands I’ve been neglecting). Also picking up a gingerbread house kit from a local bakery, so hoping that’ll give the kid something to do. Everything local with Christmas has to happen earlier this year, as we’re going away early to spend the holiday with relatives in Europe.
You smell great! I love Sunday.
How exciting to be going to Europe to spend the holidays with family!
I was admiring, again, the packaging for the AS Fri-Sat-Sun series. It’s a hard choice.
My last bottle was Givenchy III, but i chose a cheap thrill today with goold old Biagiotti Roma. I almost finished my 25ml bottle, if it is empty i will surely buy another one.
Givenchy III is so good!
CP points for once – I’m in Sana Jardin’s Incense Water, which is the last bottle (well, roll on) that I purchased. It was a blind buy that I wasn’t sure about on first wear but have grown to love. (The rose was a bit more lusty than I expected.).
Not affiliated, but Sana Jardin is currently having a 30% off sale at their site.
Restorative yoga this morning and now I’m settling down for some coffee. Hope everyone is having a great day!
I should have done yoga today! I did walk though.
Sprayed on Honore des Pres Love les carrottes this morning. It’s burned off now but it was great earlier in the day. It’s my last purchase, which I got almost immediately when we arrived here; mostly thanks to PL67’s confirmation that it’s a wonderful scent! And it is!
Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday!
Yep, you smelled great while it lasted!
I’ll be very CP compliant today. My most recent purchase was Scherrer, and bought in New Zealand with only local postage, so was my version of cheap. It was my second blind buy, so I’m getting a bit wild these days 🙂
Scherrer is indeed the lovely green everyone says it is. I’ve found that some of the newer green perfumes start off well, but dry down to something too sweet for my taste. Two that come to mind are Eris’ Green Spell and FM’s Synthetic Jungle, but maybe I just need to try them a few times more.
I love Scherrer! I think I was directed to it by tannina. Love my greens!
yes! proudly wearing my enabler pin ….
We’re hosting various family members for Belated Thanksgiving today, and I chose JM Wood Sage & Sea Salt both for the CP and to complement the scents of roasting prime rib and baking potatoes. For those who might remember, one of our guests is the friend for whom I recently made a little decant of Mojave Ghost, and she wore it today. My word, but it smells so much deeper and richer on her than it does on me!
I recently got a whiff of a lovely scent in a small office with just myself and two other people present. So, of course I had to ask “Who smells so good?” Knock me over with a feather but she said Cloud by AG!! I tested it a while back in Ulta and it NEVER smelled so delish on me! My loss…
The last bottle I got is Lutens Fille de Berlin confît de parfum. I am wearing that on top of a rose body cream.
I am off today and going to “Salon du livre” a book fair with my daughter.I hope to meet some of my favourites writers.
Oh, that sounds exciting! Tell us more, if you have time!
Fille de Berlin confit is what I was looking for, perfect rose scent, it stays close to skin and great for layering.
At the Salon du livre, i saw Heather O’Neill, she was signing her books and she also did some readings from her latest book “When we lost our heads”, accompanied by his boyfriend on the piano. I really love when poems or readings are accompanied by some background music.
I’m wearing Meo Fusciuni Luce today, the last bottle I bought while meeting Calypso at Fumerie. I’m having leftover oyster stew for lunch and coconut shrimp curry for dinner.
I’m glad you’re liking your new fragrance! Coconut shrimp curry sounds fantastic. I’ve got some (nice) frozen shrimp on hand, and may try to make some of that soon. It’ll be a nice change from turkey & stuffing!
Smoothie is pear and yogurt.
I visited my doctor in Lush American Cream which qualifies as a cheap thrill as all my Lush fragrances I shop for on eBay for £30 (I live in the country of Lush) or less for 100ml but tonight I’m back in Ma Griffe, the parfum de toilette this time, also a cheap thrill as I spent £7 for a pristine 75ml.
Wow, I should be doing my Lush shopping on ebay then!
Yes, it’s a lucky situation, but I should have mentioned that the htf, discontinued ones go for significantly higher prices, sometimes crazily so.
Figures!
I was looking at the Lush perfumes here and they are just crazy expensive imo.
Yes, Lush prices have become very expensive, I used to shop there in the early 2000’s when I got my Imogen Rose with a free travel spray with purchase, not sure if they even have that deal anymore.
It’s an unusually glorious day here for late September – clear blue skies, bright ☀️, and temps in the mid-50’s! I’m definitely continuing my Thanksgiving 🙏 today – for this beautiful day, all the good in my life, and for NST!
For today’s cp, I’m going with the ‘cheap thrill’ theme and wearing Shalimar edc, the modern version. Using my Walgreens’ points, I paid less than $10 for it a few years ago. Unlike many of you, I’m not a Shalimar lover, but I tried this version once and really liked it so I finally bought a bottle, and it’s perfect for today.
We had a very nice Thanksgiving yesterday and celebrated 3 of our November birthdays, too. With both parents working and the grandtwins now teenagers, everyone’s off in 12 different directions and we rarely all get together at the same time, so we had a nice ‘all together’ visit yesterday. What really made me😊 was watching the twins eat: both are active and passionate about their sports – she’s on the swim team, he’s on the rowing team – and they are voracious eaters. Glad I don’t have their grocery bills! Looks like next year I’ll have to find a 3-legged turkey as my chance at having a drumstick again is now nil; they each polished off a large one. And after they had several helpings of my Best Ever 🎃 Cake for dessert, I really had to chuckle to see the new can of whipped cream was virtually empty!
Looking forward to Josh Groban on PBS tonight, my favorite cellist in concert tomorrow night at an intimate cafe, and our Winterfest free showing of The Christmas Story at our historic movie theater on Sunday. I first saw it years ago with my son at the same theater when he was Ralphie’s age in the film – loved it then and still love it now.
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead as we transition from 🍁to🎄!
Wow! Meant to say, late ‘November,’ don’t know where the ‘September’ came from! 😳
It is fun to watch growing kids pack away food, isn’t it? In my house, anyone packing away food now is just getting fatter 🙂
Glad you had a nice Thanksgiving. We watched the first 10 minutes of the Christmas Story sequel but we weren’t pulled in; did you see it?
No, not yet but I’m interested.
I’m doing the CP with my sample of Thomas De Monaco Raw Gold. I want this perfume very much, but it’s quite pricey! And after my recent splurge on La Ravissante at Fumerie I can’t justify another big spend right now.
However, I did take someone’s advice from on here (thank you!) and got a nice-sized bottle of Paris EdT from the YSL website, for 30% off. Thanks so much! I’ve been wanting this for a while now. My mother used to wear it and I really liked it on her. (It was a lot better than the Tresor she always wanted to overspray, or than Youth Dew which I really couldn’t stand.) (Sorry, Mom!)
My friend from last night was nice enough to send me home with some leftovers so I’m going to re-heat my turkey, stuffing, and gravy soon, and have it with the very good cranberry sauce she got–she ordered everything from HEB (a Texas chain with good groceries and prepared food)–I think maybe that’s the way to go from now on. I love cooking for Thanksgiving but it’s a lot of work especially for just two people. (Well, two people + 10 cats; she’s one of my “crazy cat lady” friends.)
Leftovers Are Awesome
So glad you were sent home with food!
We just had our leftovers dinner, and sadly the cranberry is nearly gone. It is almost my favorite part of Thanksgiving.
My interpretation of the project was “go buy something you wanted” – Holt Renfrew finally finally had a sale so I have some FM Eau de Magnolia. Faintly surprised at wanting a white flower this much, but I sure am happy to have it.
Nice interpretation!
LOL — of course that’s the right interpretation!
Hope everyone who cel rated had a good Thanksgiving!
SOTD = Guerlain Imagine
Limited Edition numbered gold bee bottle 🐝 ! Somehow, I must have misread the CP, but then again, we always have leeway. Just for trying, I will claim CP points. 🤣. I bought this because it is simply gorgeous, and Imagine (the fragrance) is sublime. I think I have a slightly earlier version of it but eh, this was really for the bottle.

In other news, mystery stuffing was sticky rice – not bad, not bad at all. As I predicted, the first question asked was how was the niece’s wedding. Oy vey! It was done in a friendly way though so no hard feelings…and besides, I have nothing to feel bad about. Anyway, I just realized that when a specific cousin is not in attendance, the entire atmosphere is more relaxed, which was the case yesterday.
My aunt mentioned she was reading a book about Alzheimer’s and dementia. She said that one of the first symptoms of the disease is a worry that someone is stealing from you! I did not know this! You learn something new everyday.
That bottle is gorgeous!
So glad the new version of Imagine is worthy of the bottle.
And I have never heard that either…about the first sign of dementia.
SOTD was Dusita’s Le Pavillon d’Or, which I have as a sample. I thought I’d get CP points for something that’s too expensive to buy in an FB — but now I’m sorely tempted to get it, lol! We had a great Thanksgiving yesterday in spite of three out of five family members recuperating from COVID. I’m the only one still testing positive, but today was day 10 of isolation/masking since my symptoms began, so I think I’m done.
We got our fresh Christmas tree today and put it up; it smells so nice. We’ll start decorating tomorrow while all the kids are still here and once the branches have come down a bit more. I think this is the earliest we’ve ever put it up!
I am pretty sure I’ve never managed to get the tree up in November, good for you!
Seeing this late, but Pavillon d’Or was on sale for a good price at Fragrancebuy.ca.
Reporting very late. My sotd was Coco parfum. I wear Coco every year on black Friday just to keep myself in a good (enough) mood. I was dumb and actually tried to do some shopping after work. I went to one store and left empty handed. It’s just too much.
I hope people were at least nice today and that you have off the weekend to recover.
Everyone must have been busy with plans or travel today. It looks like it’s been a bit quieter here. I worked today, luckily from home, and admit that it was hard to focus on work today. It was a pretty quiet day at least. I wore Shalimar Millesime Tonka for my most recent bottle purchase and smelled great all day. And I reapplied tonight for good measure.
