Happy Almost-Friday! It's also International Chefs Day, World Osteoporosis Day and Information Overload Day. Birthdays: Arthur Rimbaud, Jelly Roll Morton, Bela Lugosi, Tom Petty, Viggo Mortensen. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Annick Goutal Nuit Etoilée for the pine tree in The Bedlam Stacks by Natasha Pulley.
Reminder: on 10/21, for Ursula LeGuin's birthday, choose a work of speculative fiction or a character from such a work, and wear the fragrance that you think fits. Your chosen work can be written, audio or visual. Bonus points if you choose a work of LeGuin's or one of the shortlisted works for the inaugural Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I was just thinking about Viggo Mortensen yesterday because the smoke was so bad here, it reminded me of the post apocalyptic movie he was in based on the Cormac McCarthy book “The Road.” Excellent book, btw…
Really struggled to remember any science fiction I’ve read. It’s not a genre that appeals to me. But, in the way back days, I read a trilogy by C.S. Lewis called the Space Trilogy. I had all three gifted to me by a friend and remember really liking them all, especially Perelandra which is the middle book.
No clue what to pair with it, but since I always link Lewis with theology and church, which reminds me of incense, which leads me to Ummagumma. Love the incense note in this one.
Happy Hump Day!
Oops, Just realized it’s Thursday. 🤪
Hey, what’s the difference 😉
The Road is truly a great book, and REALLY sad. Heart-rending. I liked the movie, though it’s not as good as the book. I only realized recently the little boy in it is Jodi Smit-McPhee, the same one who starred in Power of the Dog, a terrific movie. He’s fantastic in The Road, too. He has an unearthly quality. But my favorite Viggo roles are in Cronenberg movies, though I haven’t seen the ultra-gross recent one yet (not sure I can bring myself to).
https://www.vulture.com/2015/05/movie-review-far-from-men.html
You might like Far from Men. It’s set in Algeria in the 1950sand based on a Camus story.
Great, thanks for the tip!
HDM day four. Lee Scoresby does not seem like the kind of person who would trouble himself with a fragrance because he travels pretty light, but I’m still putting him the no-brainer Tauer Lonestar Memories, which I have to admit I don’t love for the first half hour because none of the pieces fit together, but after that it’s gorgeous, all sun-bronzed leather and campfire smoke.
I love the character and love Lonestar Memories, so applause 🙂
Today’s SOTD for the CP will be Papillon’s Dryad, in reference to Galadriel of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Lady in the Golden Wood. And extra CP points for me tomorrow, when I’ll wear another Papillon fragrance in reference to Gry, the young female protagonist of LeGuin’s book Gifts, who can call animals to her and understand them: Bengale Rouge. Papillon’s founder and perfumer, Liz Moores, surely has that gift!
Dryad is the perfect choice for Galadriel — nice work!
Any excuse to wear Dryad is good in my book! Pun intended.
😄 And I agree with SheriG – wonderful pairing!
I’m wearing Coeur de Vetiver Sacre, because I found a decant of it while looking for my Rogue Perfumery discovery set. I have got to organize my fragrance stash.
That’s a Vetiver I haven’t tried yet – what do you think of it?
Rebecca Minkoff, from the swapmeet. ❤️
Yay for the swapmeet!
Good morning.
Sotd is BR540 extrait. Gave myself a good 7 spritz. I think my neighbour can smell me.
Drinking vanilla latte.
Is the extrait different from the EdP?
They are actually very similar. If you have one you don’t beed the other imo.
Good to know this, thanks!
I’m reveling … no, basking … no, luxuriating in Cuir Cannage this morning. Such a lovely leather. And what a birthday lineup —Viggo Mortensen, Tom Petty AND Bêla Lugosi, three bada$$es of three completely different sorts.
Exactly…the stars must have been aligned just so.
I’m sticking with Ishiguro in Eau Duelle edp and edt for Never Let Me Go. They’re not really clones, of course, but it’s the right idea. I prefer the edt.
This week has felt so long! I need more sleep.
Joining you in needing more sleep!
Decided to give Matière Prémière Encens Suave one more test today. Kind of regretting spending $50 on the sampler kit in an effort to be prudent, and then ending up only liking the one I was going to buy blind. Wasted money. Not that I haven’t had lots of failed blind buys. So I guess it’s a wash.
Well, at least you’ll avoid FOMO as to the rest of the kit. Money saved? 🙂
Yes, definitely killed my FOMO!
I’ve forgotten (or never knew) what this acronym means. ??
Fear of missing out
Thanks
I know what you mean. I’ve spent way too much money on samples I didn’t like, and yet, it’s certainly better than wasting it on a bunch of disliked full bottles.
I got the same sample set and while not totally disappointed, I am pretty surprised that so many of the scents are really ambroxan or ethyl mathol heavy. At least I think it’s those two; they are done very well but have an accord that smells very Baccarat Rouge-adjacent to me. I’ve unexpectedly enjoyed Falcon Leather a lot, I’m not usually drawn to leather scents.
I tried them all at Etiket , Encens Suave and Musc Parisien were my favourites.
No perfume yet but a question about sprays and how much perfume is emitted from the bottle please. Yesterday I commented I was wearing 6 sprays of American Cream but then thought it’s from the short/squat 30 ml bottle so not as much empties from the atomizer line like for a 100 ml bottle with a much longer atomizer line. Then I wondered if everyone thinks this way or just me? 😉 ehaeheh I wonder that a lot.
But for manufacturer spray samples, for example, the 1-2 ml sprays…I feel like I can do 2 sprays but not as perfume gets emitted b/c the the atomizer lines are relatively tiny when compared to full size bottles. I feel like per spray, more perfume comes out from a 100 ml bottle than a 30 ml bottle which is to say 6 sprays from a 30 ml is somewhat less than 6 sprays from a 100 ml bottle would be.
TLDR spray size is relative to the bottle size/atomizer length but curious if others agree. Also I don’t think the entire line gets emptied per spray but still more comes out from larger bottles.
I never thought about it but it makes sense about a spray from 100ml being more than a sample.
I don’t know the answer, but your thinking makes sense to me!
I think it is not the length of the line, but how much air is pumped into the bottle as you press down, because the air displaces the perfume, forcing it out. So if a brand is using the same nozzle on all of its bottles, and the only difference is how short they cut the line, you should get the same amount coming out with each pump, regardless if it is a 30ml or 100ml. The shorter line will just suck up more fluid to make up the difference.
But no, you are not the only one who wonders about this! And I do think the sample sprays are smaller than full bottle sprays.
This goes into the mysteries of the world unless one is willing to potentially sacrifice juice and atomizers for science. I definitely think the sample sized atomizers expenses less liquid. The other sizes though to me depends on the atomizer nozzle itself. I equate this to pumping out shampoo or conditioner – the pumps used seem to dispense more fluid although in this case, more viscous than perfume.
Viggo Mortensen! Woo hoo! I don’t generally have celebrity crushes, but him in Lord of the Rings would be it. Happy birthday, Viggo!
So in his honour, I’m wearing both MCMC Noble and Hunter for Aragorn.
He was wonderful in Lord of the Rings!
Love Viggo too, and you’ve made a great fragrance pairing. Hunter is so good! I can’t seem to remember what Noble smells like though.
Incense, amber, and musk, bit of vetiver. Personally I get a lot of incense and smoke. I love Noble, but it’s overwhelming the Hunter a bit. 🙂
Yeah. He WAS perfect in LOTR.
Traveling tomorrow, so posting my one cp-compliant fragrance idea today: I’ll be wearing OJ Woman for the wonderful Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which (who were only pretending to be witchy) in the woods near Meg’s house – in A Wrinkle in Time, of course.
Smoke still terrible here. Ugh. I’ll practice yoga (for my sanity) but will wait on outdoor chores.
Perfect fragrance and perfect time to get out of (this) town! 💃❤️
Hope you are going somewhere away from the smoke! Safe travels.
Sampling Unequal from Filigree and Shadow which is a very lush mixed floral (no nonfloral notes are listed). I like it quite a bit
That sounds pretty.
The wildfires have finally made the air quality “unhealthy” and people are advised to stay inside. I don’t have any problem breathing it but it’s making my eyes itch. I have to make a Costco run but otherwise I’ll be in the house. Wearing Teatro alla Scala for something big and bold while I think about what to wear for the CP tomorrow. I think I’m leaning furry because I have no Stephen Jones that smells like space to me.
It sounds like you are living the CP…all that gritty Bladerunner air. I hope you get rain soon. By the way I tried making apple cider donuts and ate them all up!
I have never seen Blade Runner although I read Philip K. Dick’s novel a long, long time ago.
I’m happy you liked the donuts!
OMG, RUN don’t walk to see it now! Brilliant film and it stands up to time incredibly well!
2nd this! My favourite movie all-time. I use lines from it In real life all the time. Can hardly believe it is 40 years old!
Blade Runner (the movie) is well worth the time spent watching it, and this is from someone who usually doesn’t bother with movies.
I am wearing Hermes Amazone and drinking a cup of green tea.
Robin, you smell great !!
Now there’s a match made in heaven!
Why thank you, and so do you!
https://cinephiliabeyond.org/unique-perspective-making-stalker-testimony-mechanic-toiling-away-tarkovskys-guidance/
Im going with Tarkovsky’s Stalker, one of my favourite movies of all time. For the desolate, wasteland setting I want a perfume that hints at weeds rather than flowers, boggy rather than dry so I will wear Miller Harris Wander. I think Copper might also work as it has a damp ashy note.
One of the blackbird chicks ( a week old) disappeared overnight and I can’t see a corpse anywhere so I don’t think it was tipped out of the nest. The two remaining chicks look healthy, and are just getting feathers. It must be quite a squeeze in the nest now, as they take up a bit of room. They will fledge in another week or so. The adults take such good care of them…I would need a lie down.
Interesting scent choice, well described. Sorry about the lost blackbird. I agree, whenever I’ve happened to observe birds caring for their young, I find it extraordinarily draining. Not to mention sitting on those eggs for all that time. So boring!
I have never seen it, will add to my list.
In Hermes Hiris.
I am having a very busy week so far at one of the construction sites. It is very windy today and therefore cold for me despite being in the 50’s, but at least it is a sunny day with no clouds in the sky. The leaves are already changing colors everywhere. This has always been my favorite time of the fall season! 🍁🍂🍁🍂
Have a healthy and wonderful almost Friday, everyone!
You smell wonderful today, pl67! I hope the rest of your day and week goes quickly. 😊
Thank you Nancy! It was a good day. Looking forward to a nice weekend now!
Hiris sounds so perfect for the fall day you described🍁 I hope you stay warm enough today (from someone else who is always cold, regardless of the temp!)
It is always so nice to wear Hiris in the fall season! I am glad a wore a thicker jacket today. Hopefully, the temperatures will be back in the 60’s starting tomorrow
Smelling so good in your Hiris! I hope the temps stay warm enough to continue working outside.
And my order was placed! Thanks again!
Thank you, Gail! I am so happy you placed the order! Looking forward to hear your comments about it!
I owe you an email. My inbox is scary 😨 right now so I keep avoiding it. But I shall put on the new Downton Abbey movie this weekend and tackle all of my correspondence!
I’ve heard that there is supposed to be a bit of a warmup for tomorrow and Saturday.
We are expecting to reach 70 degrees here for a couple of days next week. I really hope it comes true!
This isn’t a genre or author I’m much into but yesterday I did have one brilliant idea and am taking the opportunity of not going out anywhere today to sport–ta-da–Tyrannosaurus Rex! For you-know-what, JURASSIC PARK! Lol!
Having thought of this though, I also realized it could scent the Korean Netflix show I’m currently watching, Kingdom. It combines historical drama with the zombie genre to come up with a creative, sharply satirical political commentary that is both beautiful and thrilling. I recommend it if you can tolerate a lot of very gross scary zombie scenes. T Rex combines smells of smoke, blood, and incense, with which this series is saturated.
Having thought of this I was so excited I sprayed on some big sprays and it immediately set me to coughing. Big mistake! It’s finally settling down, but wow! When you spray this it’s a whole different ball game from dabbing. It truly IS dinosaur breath. Gasp! Now I must wait a few hours for the lovely floral parts to emerge. It’ll be worth it. And I definitely cannot go out in public. I might scare my neighbors if I even walk down to the mailboxes!
Perfect! Except for the part where you’re now penned into your own personal Jurassic park.
Excellent! Was hoping we’d see Jurassic Park here this week.
Friday, yay, and a long weekend! It’s our Labour Day on Monday. I’m continuing the Earthsea theme, and moving on to the second book which is set in a temple in a desert. That calls for Taklamakan from Stéphane Humbert Lucas. Although it’s less austere than than might be appropriate, it is named after a desert.
Excellent, and ditto for the 3 day weekend.
This morning I dabbed from another Providence Perfume Co, Rose Bohème. This one is darkly beautiful, and I can see Ma Costa from HDM wearing this in happier days.
It has almost disappeared ow, though, so I’m searching for someone to wear my beloved Vetiver Oriental for. I think it will be Faramir from LoTR. He’s one of my favorite characters, and I can see him wearing this outdoorsy-but-civilized frag.
Both great matches!
Thanks, Robin!
Viggo Mortensen trivia that I just found out… he was married to Exene from the band X. I never liked that band. Lol.
I stayed home from work because I am just not feeling well. I am wearing just a spray of White Cube because it is comforting. I am going to take a nap now.
Oh… I sampled a new perfume from Phlur called Apricot something. Let me tell you it is so syrupy sweet it made me feel sick to my stomach. Fortunately I only tried it on paper.
Hope that you are feeling better tomorrow.
I liked X, but never enough to get their stuff on cassette or CD. Guess that means I found them listenable, but NBD.
I went down a music rabbit hole earlier and came across The Decline of Western Civilization 2 the Metal Years. Did you ever see it? I did when it first came out and now I want to watch it again. It’s said to have helped end Metal and usher in the grunge Era.
I never saw the first one which featured bands like X and Black Flag. That’s never been my genre.
I’ve seen bits and pieces of that. Never saw the whole thing.
I hope you are feeling better by now!
A little bit, thanks!
wishing you a speedy recovery!
Currently in Coco Mademoiselle Intense today and saving my vintage Miss Dior for the CP tomorrow.
Oh good, look forward to seeing what you matched it with!
Currently in Arquiste’s Indigo Smoke and it fits quite nicely with my Earl Gray tea binge of late. It is like earl gray tea incense. Would work as a pairing for Kate Atkinson’s Life After Life (which, like Robin, I read recently — perhaps on the recommendation of a NSTer?). I imagine Ursula’s apartment in London just after the Blitz would have smelled of smoke and tea.
My tea today is Clipper Ship’s Burnt Sugar; the caramelly flavor is a good alternative to the pumpkin and maple fall standbys.
Earl Grey tea incense sounds wonderful!
I like Arquiste Indigo Smoke as well but the Musk by Francesca Bianchi was not good at all to my nose.
ditto on all of that.
I haven’t tried it yet (nor have I tried to guess the mystery scent), but I have yet to connect with any of the (few) Francesca Bianchis I have tried, so I don’t have high hopes.
Indigo Smoke, however, is going on the want list
Oh, now I want to try Indigo Smoke!
Wearing the gorgeous Bois des Iles today. I needed a reset from a sample error yesterday when I’d tried Kilian Love. It was kind of fun at first, to me it smelled like bubblegum and a big departure from what I usually wear. But wow as the day wore on, it got bigger and more cloying. I needed the clean restraint of a Chanel to counter the effects!
That’s exactly what happened to me with my sample of BK Love. I retry it once in a while, but nope, same thing.
Wore Over the Chocolate Shop today. Before I sprayed it on, I held the nozzle up to my hubby’s nose, he said smells like candies! Close! I think his sniffer has gotten better since he used to say “it’s spicy” or “powdery” regardless of the smell. Mind you I have spicy and powdery scents too.
I have a few frags with me here do it should be good training grounds to perfect his responses.
That is good! I did this for a while to my man, and once I asked him what he smelled when I was wearing Zagorsk or something equally incensey and he said “Strawberries!”. I stopped making him play that game after that, too humiliating to be so wrong.
LOL!
Mine used to say everything smelled like incense or flowers. 🙂
Ha, my husband likewise has a couple of guesses that he applies to any fragrance.
In Au Coeur du Desert because it’s so cozy.
Excellent choice.
Today can best be summed up in three words: What a pain. Excuse me while I go off in a corner to grumble some more. 😩🤬
SOTD = Black Flower Mexican Vanilla. Bounced back to this as a comfort scent for today’s crazy.
Good idea to have a comfort scent when things are crazy. Tomorrow is Friday- yay!
We shall see how tomorrow’s tasks go…
I will grumble with you. I hope tomorrow is better for you.
Should be!
I hope the grumblings are gone by now. You smell good!
Less grumbly. I should be over it after some sleep.
Ted Lapidus Rumba, my newest vintage acquisition. Full on gorgeous 80s kitchen sink scent, which my boyfriend Viggo Mortensen would LOVE if only he smelled it on me
😉
Lol! He doesn’t know what he’s missing!
Right?!
Today’s pairing is Scent Trunk Coriander by DSH with The Golden Compass, particularly the setting of the Arctic. It’s for coriander, rose, black hemlock, vodka, leather, musks and more and DSH said of it, “With this perfume, there is a wonderful sense of the bridges of the northern climates.” It’s a warming and delightful perfume on me, and my travel spray is about half empty.
Early in the week I’d thought of wearing CBIHP In the Library on one arm and a smoky perfume on the other arm to match with Fahrenheit 451, but seeing as how Seattle has placed #1 in worst air quality among major world cities on and off yesterday and today, I’m not really feeling a smoky perfume. We’re all waiting very impatiently for the rain to start up tomorrow and clear the air.
Rain! So looking forward to it up here north of the border, as well.
Yes, I believe it! Soon we’ll have it in spades it seems.
Sigh, my phone is really awful with autocorrect. That DSH quote should say “briskness” instead of bridges lol.
Yay! So happy to hear that rain is in the forecast there!
Points for creativity on the scent combo and book pairing tho!
SOTD = Diptyque Kyoto
So formal yet so casual…
https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj88XoMu1RM/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
This week went by pretty quickly which usually isn’t the case when I had a day off. Not complaining though. One more day!
I love that bottle.
Definitely some bottle porn for you yesterday and today.
Dodging in late. Started the day in Satellite Padparadscha, then moved to Commes des Garcons edt, two of my favorite fall perfumes. I never get tired of either one.
Oh, had nearly forgotten about Padparadscha entirely! Nice.
Oh, I had a bottle of Padparascha, but regretfully swapped it away years ago. It was a beauty. Thank you for the memory.
I wish I had gotten a bottle when it was available! I have gone through several decants.
