PSA: the swapmeet is open for business.
Meanwhile, the seventh edition of a poll about transitional fragrances: what are your favorite fragrances as summer turns to fall? What scent makes you happy as the nights get chilly and the days take on that crisp edge? And tell us what perfume you wish you owned for chilly weather.
(Or, if you're like me, tell us what fragrances will allow you to hang on to that summer feeling just a little bit longer. And of course, if winter is turning to spring where you are, adjust the questions accordingly.)
Or, as always, talk about something else.

I love incense and ambers for fall. The bottle currently on my wish list is Matière Prémière Encens Suave.
I think today is going to be Ambre Nuit. 🙂
I love incense and ambers all year long 🙂
As the years go by I find I’m less and less interested in tuning my scents to the seasons. I’m still going to break out my perfect fall scent, Yves Rocher Homme Millenaire, in a few days, because I always do, but that’s it. If I feel like wearing something, and it isn’t desperately inappropriate (a heavy vanilla on a wilting summer day), I just wear whatever I feel like.
And today I felt like wearing the ELdO scent I didn’t wear yesterday, Eau de Protection. I do love an angry rose.
I love that ELDO–my choice yesterday. But funny that you think of it as “angry.” (Gosh this hobby is subjective!) I think of it as a rose in dirty coveralls, and nothing underneath 😉 😉 😉
Dirty coveralls! I like that. But some roses are placid (Diptyque Eau Rose), some are fun-loving (Rose Jam), some are sultry (Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme): Eau de Protection has always seemed rather vicious under that bright exterior, and I am here for it. Very subjective indeed!
These comments are so interesting — and now I want to try Eau de Protection! Roses, in general, are growing on me.
I also don’t like to match seasons with scents
My favorite transitional scents for summer into fall include Nicolai New York, Vanille Tonka and Patchouli Intense. Also Imaginary Authors Slow Explosions, Yesterday Haze and Memoirs of a Trespasser. And Black Orchid, Black Cashmere, Lubin Idole, Stash etc etc etc.
My favorite time of year 🍂🍁
Today I’m wearing New York as it’s pretty warm and that citrus cuts right through the heat. Not swapping today for the first time in ages, I’m pretty content with my current collection. Have a lovely day, everyone.
I’m in for Black Cashmere. Beautiful choice for fall.
Joining the Black Cashmere team! It is also one of my favorite fall-winter scents.
Nicolai’s New York is great! I gave mine to my husband, but I sneak sprays of it sometimes.
Wearing 10 Corso Como.
Some of my transitional perfumes are Jo Malone Mimosa and Cardamom, Jo Malone Pomegrane Noir, SL Feminite du Bois, Comme des Garcons Jaisalmer, 10 Corso Como, Lancome Tresor, Hermes Ambre Narguile, Chanel Bois des Iles, Cuir de Russie.
Happy weekend, everyone! 🍁🍂
You smell amazing and I love your transitional list
Thank you!
You smell amazing and I love your transitional list
Pom Noir is a cold weather scent for me. Vive la difference!
Fall and cooler temperatures always make me gravitate toward leather scents. Well, let’s face it: I nearly always love leathers, at any time of year. But more so in fall. This morning I have Soivohle Journeyman on one wrist and Dior Cuir Cannage on the other. They’re quite similar, although there are more flowers in Cuir Cannage, and more woods and dirt and amber in Journeyman. I would love to own a FB of CC, and if I were ever to stumble across one for less than a mortgage payment I would jump at it (after picking myself up off the floor). And ringthing has reminded me that I have a travel spray of Memoirs of a Trespasser somewhere and I don’t remember seeing it recently — must track that down because it’s wonderful in fall.
I do like leather in fall. Luckily have never tried CC 😉
Easing into the day very slowly.
I love fall and the whole transition into the season. Summer is a “letting it all go” season for me, and fall is about reengaging. With a new job I’m not doing as much of that as I might like, but baking, mahjong and some new learning is in the plan.
No scent just yet but I think I’ll go with Black Cashmere thanks to ringthing for the idea 😉
Planning on wearing BC tomorrow. It’s the only perfume of which I have a backup bottle.
12 hours sleep after insanely early alarm clocks. 430am is a push for this almost 70 gal.
There is a box here with Benjoin 19 to be opened! My client from working at the house of many fragrances and cosmetics last year used her discount to purchase for me.
Its much cooler in LA and I will wear the le labo or TF Bois Marocain today for errands. I am glad I blind bought the TF. I never knew the orignal so this one is perfect. And a bit more sheer which makes it very wearable in all temps.
yes love amber, resins, tobacco, smoke all wonderful for fall.
Congrats on Benjoin 19, I love that one!
Hooray for the discounted city exclusive! It’s a lovely scent.
Congrats on the Benjoin 19!
Enjoying a quiet Saturday and the Swapmeet with Mr. allo off hiking in the Olympics.
Wearing Naomi Goodsir Corps Equus, a gorgeous animalic (horsey) leather and looking forward to more leather, smoke and incense this fall: The Holy Mountain, Lampblack, Skive, Avignon, CdG (Wonderwood, Rouge, Blackpepper and Black)
CdG seems to be your house.
It has become a favorite and sort of snuck up on me.
I have a full day of grading/feedback ahead of me, and I’ve decided to wear OJ Ta’if, just because it’s so beautiful, and I need that in my life right now! My hair is a rat’s nest, I fell asleep last night in the clothes I was wearing yesterday, and I’m feeling like I need another 3 double espressos to get me through the day…..
I hope you can find some time for rest this weekend, Lisa D!
I hope you get a chance to rest a little bit today. You smell amazing.
OJ Ta’if always helps! You smell great. Good luck with the grading!
Hope that you made it thru all that grading, and had some kitten time this weekend!
Such a beautiful day, cool but sunny. I love this time of year! Some of my go-to perfumes this time of year are Mohur, Bottega Veneta, Chanel 19 and 31 Rue Cambon, Elixir des Merveilles, Hiram Green Shangri La.
Today I’m in a little spritz of The Bleu. Nice and subtle for my acupuncture appointment.
I love this weather too, and Chanel No. 19!
Wearing No. 19 myself!
In Divine’s l’infante, a sample of which came with my recent order. Very pretty, but maybe too much like other florals I already own to bother my wallet.
I am sitting at my computer after waiting patiently for quarter of an hour not drinking my freshly brewed coffee. Funny situation– so well over a year ago I wrote an article about my son with autism, and at the time and for several months afterwards all sorts of parents contacted me for advice or just to talk about their own kids on the spectrum. One woman went back and forth with me via email–she wanted to talk, we’d have suggested dates, and then the email chain would stop. I realized I was spending too much time thinking about her and worrying about her son, so eventually I just didn’t reach out again after she didn’t respond to my suggested dates/times. Fast forward over a year later, and out of the blue I get an email from her that begins something like, “Reaching out again . . . would love to talk. . .” So we began our little email dance, which ended in an email from me last Thurs saying that I looked forward to seeing her this Sat at 11, blah blah. It’s almost 11:30 now. No email. No call. I know. I know. Patience, grasshopper.
Oh, that’s unfortunate! I hope you have other things to do today and haven’t put anything off for that meeting.
I admire your patience – both with this situation and for being able tom wait for fresh coffee!
Seriously, about the coffee!
Seems to me you have had plenty of patience. Hope you have a good day!
Well, she never showed, or emailed, or called. I have work I need to do today, so am trying to focus on that. Perfume is more fun!
I agree, that’s a lot of patience!
Ghosting you again! I suggest not reaching out and if she does and you’re interested in meeting her, let her suggest a time and a place.
You are kind to keep making yourself available!
That’s more than enough patience, IMO. I wouldn’t want to make further contact after getting stood up twice by the same person.
Reading Mary Renault and sipping coffee. My favorite combination. Maybe it would be better with Greek coffee..
Hosting my first sleep over this weekend. My daughter has been asking for friends to stay over so finally we planned.
Today I am in Sycomore , a sample I found and I am in love.
Good luck tonight!
Thank you. I have had several coffees to prepare…
How fun to host a sleepover! Those girls will have so much fun!
So far so good
Today has been a gloriously relaxed day. And we’re going for cocktails at a gin distillery soon! My SOTD is Eau des Merveilles.
The scents that I am currently really excited about bringing into the rotation are (in no order): Bottega Veneta, Cuir d’Ange, Earth Mother, Dzongkha, Dzing!, Safran Troublant, Smolderose, Eiderantler, Ambre Gris, Jicky and Boyfriend.
Have fun!
Thanks for reminding me of Cuir d’ange! That is another great one for fall, but I often forget about it!
The cocktails at the distillery sounds like a lot of fun.
We have a distillery across the street. And I’ve been there only once. had a gin with limoncello and spritz of lavender water. Delicious.
I want to live on your street!!!
How were the cocktails and the distillery?
Fabulous! I had two Vespers, and was very pleased with life. (And Uber!)
what are your favorite fragrances as summer turns to fall?
Shalimar
Le 🦁
Royal Elixir
1957 or Misia
Songes, to hold on to summer as well as Nuxe oil.
Slow Dance
Black Saffron
I’m glad you are on the mend Robin.
Wearing Barbara Bui, a great transitional scent that I only discovered thanks to this community ❤️
It is Sunday night and I have finally tested negative! Still awfully tired though.
BB is a good one…surprised it is still around though!
I don’t consciously wear scents by season but I will admit that some of my BWFs, heavy leathers, and serious civet fragrances don’t generally call to me in the heat. So I am looking forward to wearing Carolina Herrera, Cuir Cannage, Cuoium, and Tobacolor soon. Today I’m wearing BDK Pas Ce Soir. I’m getting my flu and bivalent Covid jabs this afternoon and hoping I have no side effects tomorrow, because I’m planning on visiting the souffle pancake place around the corner.
I am hoping you feel well too..pancakes are great!
Mmm, Cuir Cannage. Looking forward to that one as well. Tobacolor is super sweet on me, I’m thinking it will need to be at least -20 before I can contemplate wearing it…
I love the warmth of summer, but I think spring is my favourite time of the year – we so often have rubbish summers, but I’m ever optimistic so spring is always full of promise 🙂
Some of my favourite spring and summer scents are Chamade and Chants d’Arômes from Guerlain, Le Temps d’Une Fête from Parfums de Nicholai, and Mito from Vero Profumo.
Having listed those, I’m actually going to wear Guerlain’s Aqua Allegoria Figue-Iris for a cool but sunny morning.
I love Chant d’Aromes!
I’m wearing Fils de Dieu; I’m really liking it in the cool weather. I also like to wear Shalimar and Parfum Initial when temperatures change. Although I don’t usually have ‘seasonal’ scents. Sometimes it’s fun to wear the heavy-hitters in warmer temperatures, depending on the situation.
Today I finally dropped off my clothing donations from my ongoing, never-ending purge. Glad to have the gained back the space on the floor and in the closet.
Oh lordy, I have made one trip to the donation shop, have another trunk full right now, and just went up in the attic and saw six more bins that need to be gone through! Unfortunately it’s still far too hot in the attic to do that job, will have to wait another month or two until temps drop.
I’ve been in a wardrobe purge, myself, for the past few months — had a long break before tackling my final two categories, trousers and skirts (the largest, as it turns out). I should do the skirts this week, then really make a point t it only if dropping off the donations, but of taking some things to be tailored. I can sew darts by hand but some of my items are well beyond my skills. It’s daunting — but yes, the extra space feels wonderful!
You all are inspiring me! I have a leave from my job this fall and am using some of that time to clear out, especially now that two of my young adult children have moved out post-pandemic. I’ve been able to give them quite a few household items, so that helps. I’m even pulling out some fragrances for the swapmeet! Usually I’m not organized enough to do that on time, then I forget until the next one. But the real challenge will be clothes and closets, so your good examples are encouraging me in that direction.
SotD Dune, with a bit of Stash as a layer. I think this is a good transition of the seasons-perfume combo. Off to read comments – yay for Swapmeet, and hope that you, Robin, are feeling better. As in, hmm, I want another cheeseburger better!
That sounds like such a great combination, I’ll have to try it.
It was powerful, but I quite enjoyed it!
I should see how Dune works in the autumn…
Thank you! Made lamb burgers w/ gruyere for dinner so I must be on the mend 🙂
Today I wore Jour d Hermes. I normally have scent glue skin but this one doesn’t stick around long on me.
I’ve been breaking out Alien and its flankers for fall. Pretty soon I will be wearing Angel Muse too.
I drove home at 8 p.m and it is so dark now. I hate driving in the dark. I have the anti glare coating on my glasses but honestly I don’t think it helps much.
I’m so jealous of your “scent glue skin” 🙂
Scent glue skin twins! If something disappears in 3 or 4 hours, it’s a bit of a shock.
More jealousy!!!
Luckily my favorite green fragrances like Chanel No.19 and Silences mostly work very well as transitional scents now, partly due to the hot, humid summer weather we have here. When that ends, September and October are still warm and sunny, but much less humid, which suits the greens. I’m finding that my new love Violet Ida is perfect for this time of year. I’m also getting acquainted with Ormonde Jayne Privee, which goes well with this season. I need to pull out my Ambre des Merveilles, which is perfect for fall.
This weekend is my DH’s birthday, so we’ve had brunch with our kids and DH is now happily settled in front of a new TV, watching football. We had to rebuild part of a built-in bookcase to accommodate it, but luckily we found a great local carpenter to do that, and he finished it today! I’m getting a lot of gardening done, doing lots of overdue weeding but also filling in some gaps with new plants and getting ready to plant some cool-season vegetables in my raised beds.
Happy Birthday to your husband! 🎂
Thank you!
I agree on Ambre des Merveilles – was thinking that myself.
Happy Birthday weekend to Mr. Old Herbaceous!
I miss Kevin’s writing, does anyone know by any chance if he writes for any other blogs or something of the sort?
He doesn’t at the moment, sorry.
Doing some sampling this morning, planning to wear CdG Daphne as my SOTD.
I don’t have any transitional perfumes since I don’t do that anymore. We were able to have some of the dehumidifier stuff removed this morning and it is quieter. Currently in CdG Zagorsk. After my shower, I have no idea on what I am going to wear.
Yay, glad things are drying up!
Wore Chanel No. 19 today, which is a good transitional scent. It’s actually perfect anytime. I start to look at vanillas, Tonka, spicier, maybe richly sweet or plummy or boozy. Oeillet Bengale, Black Perfecto, Cuir de Lancôme, Kelly Caleche….
Am trying to get some stuff done around the house today, like laundry and cleaning and stowing bedding, etc. We went to a lovely jazz performance last night. The pianist was extraordinary. Pumpkins are now everywhere in the markets. We will stock up soon.
No. 19 is practically perfect in every way! You smell great.
I was shocked to see so many pumpkins last weekend at the farm stands here!
Transitional scent of the day Je Reviens parfum. I haven’t worn Je Reviens recently; but every time I do, no matter what wonderful new perfumes I’ve tried, it moves quietly right back to my top 5 perfumes. I have all vintage versions. Note to self to try the current.
Oh how nice!
Transitional perfumes, huh? Off the top of my head, I can think of EL Azuree, Bottega Veneta, any version of Chanel No. 19, and AG Encens Flamboyant. This is not a definitive list by any means.
My brains are still scrambled from listening to a smoke detector chirping for roughly the past 20 hours. The d@mn thing was in a place I couldn’t reach. I wanted to smack it with a baseball bat, but that would have created more problems than it would have solved. Thankful I had earplugs that I could use when I went to sleep last night!
Why did it take so long to shut up the smoke detector? Simple. Mr. Jalapeno was out of state on a fishing trip. Shortly after he got home this afternoon, the annoyance was silenced with a fresh battery.
May you all have peace and quiet in your houses tonight!
SOTD = Prescriptives Calyx. My bottle still smells great. And I needed a perfume pick-me-up after all that racket.
Sending perfumed hand-pats about that smoke detector. That happened at my parents’ house once: ARRGGG! Also, you just reminded me that I think I have a bit of Calyx I’ve been meaning try. Must rummage! Peace to your house, too J! 🙂
There’s definitely a difference between the Prescriptives version of Calyx and the current stuff from Clinique. The older stuff has more going on, while the current version is mostly grapefruit.
Well drat!! Glad it finally got silenced.
