Niche line Byredo has launched Vanille Antique, a new addition to the Night Veils collection.
Mirroring the morning ceremony of applying scent, Night Veils are designed for the ritual of the night. Like flowers that release their headiest scent at twilight, these penetrating concentrates of perfume are made from noble raw materials chosen with meticulous care.
Vanille Antique is the first titular Byredo fragrance centered around perfumery’s rarest raw ingredient. Here, the smoky scent of vanilla bean becomes charged with history and character; transforming into something unexpected, less syrupy, and more nuanced. The expected sweetness of vanilla is cut through by textures of earthiness and darkness, a warming mix of cashmere wood, ciste, and musk form intoxicating ambrosia.
Distilled into a pure essence utilizing time-honored techniques, a small amount works closer to the skin and radiates through the heat of the body, lingering for many hours.
Additional notes include plum.
Byredo Vanille Antique is available now for pre-order at Bergdorf Goodman, $330 for 50 ml Extrait de Parfum.

Sounds appealing but that price point is painful.
Isn’t it terrible? This sounds like something I would like, but at that price I wouldn’t even bother trying it.
If you’re going to do a true extrait de parfum, sell it in quarter-ounce bottles for $150. Hardly anybody needs 50mL or more of extrait.
Can’t argue with that, but I do think Byredo has found the way to reach their market…and their market is not perfumistas.
I recently stayed at the InterContinental in Paris. It was ridiculous but I didn’t pay for it so off I went. Why were there $400 of Byredo bath and body products stocked in each of the bathrooms? Half liter sizes of hand wash, body wash, body lotion, shampoo and conditioner. Too bad I don’t like Bal D’Afrique (or anything they do, really) but I can imagine many people are thrilled.
They are trying to reduce plastic waste…

This one sounds less plastic and synthetic than the other offerings. With that said, though, I’m just not a fan of this house. The packaging and “cool factor” are there but the juice never lives up. They definitely found their target though—hip, model types who want to spend a ton of money on a brand they identify with. Let’s just say…I’m not a hip model type, lol.
I would say the same. There are a few I really like (Pulp! Also Flowerhead) but so far none I cannot live without, and the prices are too high for what they are.
True, Pulp is interesting. But if I’m gonna plop down $350 for a vanilla I might go for Guerlain’s Cuir Beluga!
