It's Friday and Jacques Brel’s birthday. Our community project for today: if you like, tell us about a favorite Jacques Brel song and wear the fragrance to match. If you don't like, wear whatever you want.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm in Guerlain Après L’Ondée for the Jacques Brel song Marieke.
Reminder: 4/15 is Tax Day in the US. Pick your poison: wear the fragrance (presumably from a sample) you'd buy if you had an unexpected windfall, or wear a cheap thrill.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Bonus listen/watch: Jacques Brel singing Marieke live, or listen to the Elly Stone version (in English and Flemish), or hear Judy Collins doing a more sedate version with the Boston Pops.
Beautiful warm, sunny day in the 60’s, after boring rain in the last couple of days.
Wearing TDC Bois d’Iris. Not one of my favorite iris perfumes, but it is always nice to revisit it and enjoy it.
Happy Friday, everyone! ?
That is a nice one. I went through a small decant. Happy Friday!
It is! My decant is still half and if a full bottle falls on my lap it would be welcome! ?
It is SO nice to see sun!!
It IS! ???
Perfume twin! I think we smell great. Happy Friday!
Hi twin! We do smell terrific! ?
Ooh, that’s what I’ll go with after my shower!
Triplets! Smelling fantastic!
Happy Friday!⚘???
???????
Happy day, honey. Hope all is well. Have a great weekend!! ???
OMG! So good to see you! You too enjoy the weekend! ?????
Long overdue card on its way to you! Happy Spring! ???
It was SO good to see the sun today! ???
So uplifting! ???
I’m in Tam Dao, day 2, which is always my traveling perfume.
After Wednesday’s concert I drove my college daughter back to school yesterday then spent the day in town hitting some of the local boutiques. She goes to school at my old alma mater, so it’s always fun for me to visit. We got her some groceries and had dinner at a new to us wood fired pizza place. Then she went home to study (she’s such a good kid) and I went back to my hotel and watched some tv and enjoyed a night to myself.
Woke to a layer of snow on the ground- again!- and now I’ll head back home. I’ve got “the sads” as my husband would say. Trying to remind myself, don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened. It IS the weekend after all.?
Good luck beating the sads, madtowngirl! Sounds like you had a wonderful time.
That sounds like a wonderful visit with your daughter. You smell lovely.
” smile because it happened”
I will try to remember that.?
Ditto!
Sounds like a lovely time. Which sometimes does result in sadness when things are over. Hope it passes quickly.
Don’t cry because it’s over.
Smile because it happened.
——-Dr. Seuss
I have a lovely wooden sign featured prominently in my front hall to always remind me of this!
Aww <3 What a nice visit 🙂
Good morning and TGIF!
No CP points for me today. I am in day 3 of Lush, wearing Vanillary.
I tried Annick Goutal’s new Folie d’un Soir and I didn’t like it. It smelled like something burnt or somebody had stubbed a cigarette on my skin, not nice. I wish I could detect the cocoa note but no luck. Money saved though! ?
Currently drinking decaf vanilla latte to match.
I think cp points will be few and far between today…
I have to admit that I had never heard of Jacques Brel. Robin, I clicked on the link you supplied yesterday, and saw a song listed from the Jacques Brel songs I had not heard in such a long time — If You Go Away. I used to work at a lite rock/adult contemporary station in the mid 80s to early 90s, and that song was played from time to time. It was the Neil Diamond version, and I always loved the beautiful words to this song.
I chose this song to go with my SOTD, Chanel Cristalle. I hope Cristalle never goes away.
Oh good! And join you in hoping Cristalle is always with us.
Cristalle’s been “out of stock” on the Chanel website since late November. I’m half out of my mind thinking they’ll discontinue it, ‘though a bit soothed that at least they’re keeping it listed on their site. I have less than a half working bottle and only one bub, plus I turned my niece onto it and she wants a bottle. (As much as I love her, she’s not getting either of my existing bottles. So much for auntie-love, huh? 😉
Somehow I just don’t think it would happen…but I’ve been wrong before.
Cristalle forever! I’m not taking chances, though, I have a large back up bottle.
There’s something about that first blast of Cristalle that catapults me back 30+ years! I always want to have that…
For the CP
https://youtu.be/a4ekfBv3HyY
I have been listening to Jacques Brel on my speaker while drinking tea in the morning and found that I like this.
I love the delicate loving tone of this melody so I chose 31 RC EdT from Chanel.
Oh yay, a song I did not even know! Thanks ltsg.
I got my second booster yesterday, and woke up to a sore arm, a fever and a vicious headache. I’m not sure if the fever and headache are allergies or the booster. I’m commando, having stayed home from work.
Congrats on your jab!
Hope you feel better soon. My allergies started in with a vengence this week.
Ugh, hope you feel better PriscillaE!
Hope you feel better soon!
Ouch! Hope that your arm feels better and your headache & fever are gone soon.
I’m never good at music-inspired CPs. It’s chilly and might snow tomorrow (wah). I’m wearing Tauerville Vanilla Flash, from my replacement bottle. I’m very much ready for winter to be completely over.
Sorry…I know I’ve done quite a few of them. Plus, VERY sorry about your snow, blech.
I’m without any thoughts about the CP, since I am unfamiliar with Jacques Brel. However, I figured y’all would be forgiving in this regard, and I’m now wearing two hefty spritzes of Shaal Nur, from my ancient decant. It’s fabulous!
Extremely forgiving, especially when you smell so great!
Oooooooooooh, Shaal Nur!
I already got my refund. Unfortunately, my car insurance is also due at this time each year, so wave goodbye!
My windfall perfume would be PG Arabian Horse, whose price just went up 🙁
I got my refund just in time for my car to break down! The universe can smell money! Lol.
I’m in Masque Milano l’Attesa for ‘Ne Me Quitte Pas’. It is from Masque’s Opera series. Saw a play years ago about his songs and loved it. I think most people have heard the song. The English translation is “if You Go Away”. The literal translation is a bit different.
Twins! I believe my parents had the soundtrack to “Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris”.
You smell awesome. My second favorite iris scent ever!
Oooh I tried this for the first time last week and loved it and bought a bottle straight away. I am so glad I’ve learned to appreciate iris so that I can revel in this one! Enjoy!
No idea what to choose for a song-and-perfume match, so i simply put on lots of Agent Provocateur. At least i smell nice. Tomorrow will be spent renewing my radiooncologic license with an all-day course plus exam. I am not looking forward to it, its mostly about regulations and laws etc, really boring stuff.
Good luck with the exam!
That sounds painful. Hope it goes relative fast! ??
Good luck! ?
You do smell nice, and best of luck for tomorrow!
Good luck with the course and exam! ???
French perfume houses, day 5: it was a tough choice (so many Lutenses! so many Muglers!) but I settled on Dior Eau Sauvage, which is probably something Brel would have worn, with its easy, almost throwaway masculinity: it seems very simple but it’s rich and complex if you’re paying attention. (My bottle is nineties-ish, old enough to still have some recognizable oakmoss in it: not *vintage* vintage, but it’ll do nicely.)
It does seem like it would suit him.
I love those oldschool male scents
Happy Friday! We are back to our regularly scheduled weather of cloids and rain after a few days of heat. Wearing Orris Tattoo, serms like several of us already are on the iris theme.
You’re back home now?
Not yet, driving to the ferry. Will be there tonight though.
You smell great!
Thank you!
Safe crossing. I hope your weekend goes well.
Thank you! Waiting to board the ferry in the rain.
You smell so good! And welcome home!
Thanks! We got a gap in the rain to unload the car. Lucky us!
Yay for your travels being almost done!
Very relieved to have arrived, it was a long drive.
I’m in Bois d’Iris by the Different Company. I found a deeply discounted bottle on Beautyhabit’s sale page a few years ago and have never regretted the purchase.
I hope everyone has a great day and is looking forward to a nice weekend!
Yay for deep discounts! I wish I’d run across a deep discount on TDC De Bachmakov.
(whispering) I just saw it on Fragrancenet… don’t know if it’s discounted enough for you to want to buy it, but it’s there as one of their options under the Eau de Parfum entry.
Thank you socks!!
Happy Friday and thanks for all the words of encouragement yesterday! Wearing Rose D’Amalfi today.
I am curious what people think about laundry detergent smells please. While I love perfume, I always buy unscented Tide b/c most laundry detergent smells terrible to me…almost sickening. Sometimes as I am out for walks in neighborhood, I can smell laundry drying and the smell of strong detergent or, even worse, fabric softener. eaheheh 😉 I am not trying to offend anyone but was curious if it’s me or if others find most laundry detergents overwhelming and/or bad smelling. I don’t think it’s scent family really either…like fresh or clean etc. b/c I like some fresh or clean perfumes…I kind of think many laundry detergents just have a cheap and/or overwhelming scent that is unpleasant. ehaeheh This sounds judgmental as I read it but I am not sure why I have such an aversion to scented laundry detergent…tag this post as Things I Ponder On Walks…. 😉
I do not care for laundry smells either. I try to buy unscented detergents and fabric softeners. Maybe the natural smell of the cleaning agents does not mix well with added cheap scents.
I only buy unscented laundry detergent and dryer sheets. I find scented to be overpowering.
Unscented laundry products here too. I don’t necessarily find the scent off putting, but developed allergies somehow. If my sheets are washed in scented products I wake up with grossly edematous lips and eyelids. Cosmetic surgery gone terribly wrong is not the look I’m going for, ever! ?
I use unscented too, mainly bc Mr. Vee has sensitive skin and Costco’s sensitive skin version is unscented, but I’m not big on detergent scents anyway. I do use the lavendar Eucalan for wool sweaters with the hope that lavendar helps keep moths away, but I still get the occassional moth hole.
We use Tide unscented. When my husband visits his brother and does laundry (he HATES packing dirty clothes) the white musk scent from their detergent not only stays on his clothes through several washes, it “infects” other clothing put in the laundry bin.
We use Seventh Generation unscented. Once we got a front loader, we switched to solely plant-based cleaning to help avoid the smell front loaders can get. I tried an added scent once, years ago, and almost got a headache the smell was so strong.
I hate the iverpowering artificial laundry smells too, it is sickening.
I’m with y’all on this one — I find the overpowering scent of laundry detergents difficult to endure. This issue tends to be compounded by the fact that most folks use too much detergent for any given laundry load, and then follow that up with scented dryer sheets.
AND they add a big capful of one of those “scent boosters” to the wash! It’s overwhelming and I hate it so much. The *stink* of it coming from the laundry room is eye-watering: there’s a special place in Hell for whoever dreamed up that product category. I use unscented products (laundry and personal-hygiene) because I don’t want my clothing to smell like anything other than clothing, and I want to decide what I’m going to smell like for the day, not have some shampoo manufacturer decide for me.
My husband bought these terrible dryer sheets that scent the entire upstairs, even tucked away in a laundry room cabinet. We do our own laundry, though, and I do my son’s, so I refuse to use them, even if I do have to wait out their existence.
I am with you…I only buy unscented laundry products.
I split the difference. Most of the time I use unscented laundry detergent and a very specific fabric softener that does have scent. However, I use only half the recommended amount of fabric softener in my laundry. Otherwise things feel kind of “greasy” to me. The exception to unscented laundry detergent is towels and sheets. Those are done with the same scent as the fabric softener. Dryer sheets are a huge NOPE since they make me break out in a rash.
Mr. Jalapeno’s stepmom uses laundry products that REEK of white musk. I’ve washed clean things he has brought back from her place simply because I can’t tolerate that smell! BLETCH!
Add me to the list of unscented laundry products only. I think it’s interesting how many of us scent lovers are averse to these smells.
Wearing Coco Mademoiselle today and eagerly awaiting my Sephora package to arrive on Tuesday. When I get off work at 6 today, I will have 2 days off. I can’t wait for those 2 days.
I found a water-soaked package this morning but only had time to bring it in. God forbid it could have been sitting out there all night in the rain. If it was a Sephora, I hope it was packed well!
I have found too many soaked packages at my house. Sometimes I think that the delivery people aren’t paying attention or just don’t care if it gets soaked or not. As long as they make their delivery quotas, who cares if it gets ruined or stolen.
I try to be empathetic: they have horrible, almost unmeetable quotas (which are gradually increased over time), they’re under tremendous stress to get the route finished on schedule, and there are repercussions if they fall behind. I mostly don’t think the drivers are to blame: it’s the companies that hire them.
It was indeed my Sephora ?. I haven’t opened it yet but I hope all is ok.
Oh noes on the waterlogged package! That sucks.
Enjoy your days off, Dawn! I hope you got some fun things from Sephora.
Hi friends! I am back with another update.
1. We had a rough weekend. We both felt worse, our remperature was higher than normal, the symptoms generally intensified. But do not worry. We are feeling much better now.
2. Our temporary protection status was approved. This means residence and work permit in Sweden. And access to medical care. Although we are still waiting for our LMA cards (refugee ID cards in Sweden).
3. Last Friday we took Kora to a vet. She is healthy, but since she was not chipped, we cannot prove that her certificate with data on rabies shots is actually hers. And rabies has a long incubation period. So at the moment she is quarantined (home isolation), which means we cannot move anywhere from the current flat and ensure she has no contact with humans and other animals until August. But she also took a blood test (rabies antibodies), so if her antibody level is high enough, the isolation will not be necessary. The test results should be ready in a week (two weeks from the date of the test). And the vet chipped her too.
4. I finally have a laptop. Yay! And a Cyrillic keyboard. It took me some time to get used to it, but today I bought a mouse, and it is much more convenient than a touch pad. I am also getting used to Open Office (instead of MS Office).
With all health problems and various things to do and manage, I did not really focus on finding more work, but I feel ready now. At least I did one order and another one is on its way.
Wonderful news.
I hope you continue to feel better and am glad you now have medical care access!
Glad to hear from you! You are a brave and resourceful woman, and I’m happy certain things are slowly improving for you all. I hope the laptop opens up a world of connection and potential work. Hugs to you, mom, and the lovely Kora! ?⬛
❤❤❤
So glad to hear that the documentation is (mostly) falling into place and that you’re getting through the health issues!
So glad things are moving along even if you’ve been unwell…hope everything continues to fall into place.
(As a side note, I realize it is probably the least of your worries but I remember that transition and I did eventually come to prefer Open Office…)
This actually makes me hopeful that I will get used to OpenOffice too. Thank you, Robin!
Great news! Sending hugs!
Hope it all works out
I hope your health continues to improve and life becomes more settled.
So good to hear from you with (mostly) good news and that things are slowly falling into place! Sending positive energies your way for a full return to good health for you and your mom and that all goes well for Kora (my three ???send her loving purrs, too.). And good luck on employment-seeking. ?
I’m sorry to hear you’ve been still unwell, but very glad to hear that you are getting things sorted out.
Woo hoo! Things are looking up! I hope Kora ends up not having to be quarantined – I’m glad you were able to bring her with you. Sending good vibes to you, your mom and Kora!
Glad to hear from you, and that things are looking up after a few rough spots. Fingers crossed that Kora won’t have to isolate/quarantine for much longer!

I was not familiar at all with Jacques Brel. I couldn’t let a music cp pass me by, so I did a little research. To my surprise he wrote one of the saddest English songs from the 70’s “Seasons in the Sun” Jacques original ” Le Moribond” is far less sad. Thankfully. Yay Jacques!
My sotd is Chanel No.1 body mist. I really need to get this.
It’s still not spring here. Expecting snow again tonight, in between the rain.
I was shocked when I discovered that factoid about Seasons in the Sun, although they changed the lyrics quite a bit.
Snow! I hope the weather improves for you
I don’t mind it so much since I know it’s almost over. I think this might be the last of it.
I noticed the “Seasons in the Sun” title as well. It was one of my hubby’s favorite songs when he was a kid. I think he’s even got it on a Playlist now.
It has always made me cry since I was a kid. This and “Sister Golden Hair” lol.
I have that one on my playlist. Sometimes I get into the 70s and 80s music! Good times!
I quite liked Seasons in the Sun, but once I heard Jacque Brel’s original, I preferred that.
I also think that “Seasons in the Sun” is a big downer. One of the saddest songs I know of.
Woke up for the second time fairly late for me at 1030. Originally woke at 7AM and thought “Nah, too early!” and went straight back to sleep.
I’ve heard of Jacques Brel but not familiar with any of his music, so I’ll just have to adapt the CP a bit. I have decided I will go with something French in his honor, but still commando at the mo. I’m leaning towards Corsica Furiosa as it’s supposed to be warmer than I like today…?
Plus, you’ll smell fantastic 🙂
No real CP points for me today. I’m in New York Intense, so I guess at least a French house, though not a reference to France?
I’m finally feeling much more myself, with my sinuses cleared, and we’re all out of self-isolation, so at least I can go buy toilet paper. 🙂
Tax day next week…sigh. The Canadian taxes are long done (but not due yet). The US taxes are so complicated, for no real good reason other than we live abroad and owe nothing but have to file, that I haven’t had the energy to do them. I should just get them out of the way.
Yay for being out of isolation and glad you are feeling so much better!
Good news that you are feeling better!
Alas, I am a tax procrastination twin with you. AFAIK Mr. Jalapeno hasn’t even started yet.
I only know a little of Jacques Brel’s music, and nothing that seemed to tie in with the perfumes I have here. But in many photos I’ve seen he has a cigarette dangling from his mouth, so I’m wearing Tobacolor.
Ha, perfect!
The photo up top is amazing — quintessentially French somehow.
I’m in Paris-Deauville, in part for the very French vibe and in part because I’m out of town visiting family and only brought a couple of tiny decants with me.
Isn’t that a great shot?
Love Deauville! So refreshing & classy. Thinking of blind-buying Edimbourg after reading several reviews. Hope you’re having a nice visit w/ good weather! ???
I chose Nicolai Kiss Me Intense for Les Prénoms de Paris.
The song reminded me of a trip my husband and I made to Paris in late 90s I think it was. We joined some friends who were meeting in Paris for a concert. One came from Scotland, another from London, another from Los Angeles, my husband and me from NYC. Just four days. I referred to that trip as the “ingest fest.” Lots of food and wine, including a very, very late night (early morning?) at a jazz club.
I made a trip to the Nicolai boutique to buy Le Temps d’Une Fête and also brought home Odalisque and Number One and one other, which I can’t remember now. We had made a stop at some cheese shop during our stay but didn’t finish it all. So, we decided to bring some leftover, very stinky cheese home to NY. I wrapped the cheese in plastic, sprayed some Number One on it, wrapped a t-shirt around it and sprayed more. Thankfully, we came through customs late at night and set off no dog sniffing alarms.
What a cool match and memory.
Thanks. The song matched Kiss Me Intense from a mood standpoint better than Le Temps. There’s a line about a first kiss. I’d love to go back to Paris…
What a wonderful trip that was! We went to Paris on our honeymoon and I haven’t been back since — that was our planned, then canceled, family trip for the summer of 2020. Ugh. Hoping to get back there soon!
La chanson des vieux amants:
https://youtu.be/B1uT1tEX0Lk
And I’m wearing Réminiscence Héliotrope for a suitably melancholic mood. It’s one of my favorite notes at the moment.
Snap!
Sure, we’ve had some storms–
Twenty years of love is crazy love.
A thousand times you took your suitcase
A thousand times I took flight
And each piece of furniture in this room–without a cradle–
reminds me of the explosions of old tempests.
Nothing is itself: you’ve lost your taste for water
And me, the taste for conquest.
I am wearing Turbulences for Chanson des Vieux Amants. Doesn’t quite match the fact that I’m sitting in bed, sipping a cup of tea, sharing the crusts from my toast and marmite with the dogs, watching the sky lighten and listening to the birds. Happy weekend!
We thought alike?
I want’s aware of Jacques Brel before this week; learning about him and listening to some of his songs has been fun. That said, I am skipping the CP in favor of sampling through another discovery set, so I’m wearing Carthusia 1681 and Essence of the Park (the latter thanks to kpaint).
They both fit in my personal category of “Cary Grant Colognes,” which are frags I would expect to find on a smart, charming, and kind man who is always wearing either a suit (except at night, when he wears a nice pajama set). I started watching Cary Grant movies when I was young, so he is more of a dad-figure in my mind than a romantic-interest-figure. Anyway, the closest I can describe my “Cary Grant Colognes” are fougere + a bit of floral. For 1681, the floral is iris, and for EotP it is magnolia and a hint of linden. Of the two, I prefer EotP.
Today’s tea is a cinnamon pu’er.
This is lovely to read, thank you Vee!
I’d love to smell a “Gary Grant Cologne” wafting from a well dressed guy sometime! Doubt that will happen, though. All the scent encounters I have in The Wild so far have been women.
Jacques Brel’s Amsterdam has long been a favorite of mine. Before I even knew what it was about, I loved its intensity (plus I love anything sung in French). Then, a few years ago, my favorite cellist, who composes and performs across many genres and sings in many languages, began ending his concerts with a rousing cover of the song, endearing it to me even further. So, even though Amsterdam is not a French city and Brel was Belgian (but his family adopted the French language and most of his songs were in French), I knew I wanted my fragrance to be French and speak to me of the sea. My choice for today’s cp is the classic Hermes Eau de Merveilles. Although it’s not bawdy like the song and its listed notes don’t say it, for me I get salt and sea spray and sitting on a rocky, wooded shore watching the waves come in. And it’s one of my top 5 scents, lasts all day on me, and I never tire of it.❤️
An interesting (but rather lengthy) analysis of Amsterdam can be found here https://www.storyanddrama.com/jacques-brel-amsterdam-song-lyrics-translation-analysis-and-meaning/
It’s finally time for baseball, which means it must be Spring, so hopefully the weather here will get the message soon; it’s been cold, yucky, and rainy for what seems like forever now. Looks like the ? will finally shine on Sunday, so I’m looking forward to a dip in the hot tub then followed by an afternoon concert featuring a classical music guitar and violin duo performance.
Here’s looking forward to the weekend and a good one for all of you! (And Go, White Sox!) ⚾️
I hope that your White Sox had a great Opening Day Game!
Thanks for that link!
Saturday morning here, yay for the weekend. I was planning to go and get my flu shot at 10am, but I have now discovered a fabric sale. I need more fabric even less than I need more perfume, but …
I’ll continue the French theme today with PdN’s Sacrebleu Intense.
Fabric sales are fab! I’m in the same position as you — more fabric in my possession than I will likely use in my lifetime, same with perfume. But owning them makes me very happy, and as I tell my patient husband, they’re cheaper than designer shoes, fancy make-up, and many other indulgences I don’t pursue! First-world options, I know.
Wearing Heure Exquise today, joining some of the peeps in iris today.
Happy Friday, everyone!
Such an elegant green perfume!
Thank you, Jalapeno. I should wear it more often.
You smell fantastic!
Thank you! I’m glad I have a bub of this one.
I’m wearing Insolence EDP, which was inspired by the daily lemming Otherland candle post since I think the candle smells like this perfume. ?
Boyfriend comes home from his work trip tonight woohoo! And just a couple more hours of work to go.
You smell fabulously 80s!! ???? I have a 1.7 oz size of Insolence and it’s my secret guilty pleasure! Love that candied violet bomb. I need to get a bub of L’Instant Magic from the Guerlain website. It’s such a pretty scent and no longer available elsewhere.
Thanks!
I love Insolence edp! In fact I love Insolence in all its forms, so you will smell fabulous all day!
Thanks! I’ve had the EDT on my swap wishlist (just a decant is fine) for a while with no luck yet. I want to be able to do an EDT and EDP comparison one of these days.
You smell great! I really like Insolence, so much that I have both the edt and edp. It’s such a fun scent to me.
I hope you can get your nose on the edp soon!
**edit** Hope you can get the edt soon. Silly autocorrect.
Thank you, Gail!
I hope that some Insolence EdT comes your way soon!
Oh, thanks. I’m perfectly happy with the EDP in the meantime. ?
28 La Pausa,
Thunked!
Standby weekend,it’s been raining all afternoon.Fall has indeed arrived with temps dropping!
Happy Weekend!
Jacques Brel is fairly well known in South Africa,we have many artists singing his songs in French and “Marieke” has an afrikaans version as well.
XO’s
Smelling great, jb! Sorry about your rain today. I hope the sun comes out soon☀️
We are TWINS, JB!
Sounds like you got my weather from yesterday!
Spring must be hiding out somewhere on the planet, but it sure isn’t here.
SoTD is JM Wood Sage & Sea Salt – – perfect for work in cube farm. Costco just listed the 3.4 oz size for an excellent price ($115).
Speaking of romantic, handsome Monsieurs, check out “Emily in Paris” on Netflix. Such a cute, fun show and “Le Chef” from Normandy is so handsome and sweet, he should be against the LAW!
The version in the new Wild Swimming is awfully pretty, but not such a good deal.
Has JM changed WS&SS in the new release set? That moss one sounds tempting, too. Thank you for posting on those!
Posting late today!
Song of the Day: https://youtu.be/-tPcc1ftj8E
Not Jacques Brel, but Brel-adjacent according to Wikipedia.
Gads, what a week. Today I saw my Mom’s tombstone for the first time. My brother texted me a picture of it from Colorado. It’s been up for 6 days. Apparently the cemetery had ordered it 4 times, and had issues getting it. We noticed something had been omitted, so a new headstone has been requested. We shall see how long it takes for this one…
Sometimes life is so crazy you have to laugh thru the tears.
SOTD = Clinique Aromatics in Black. I like it. It’s definitely nowhere near as powerful as its perfume parent, though. AiB is a quiet, understated powdery floral.
Hugs, Jalapeno. This sounds really hard.
Thanks DolceVita.
I am not surprised at the delay with my Mom’s headstone. National cemeteries in the US are not noted for speed. We waited for months when my Dad passed away 33 years ago for his permanent grave marker, so it is not entirely unexpected.
Hugs to you Jalapeno.
We are song twins today.?
Thank you lillyjo. Rather surprised that I have a music twin today! Kewl!
Oh my goodness, Jalapeno. You said it! I’m so sorry.
Thanks Gail. I’m giving serious thought to having a bit of ice cream tonight.
Sorry about your tough week, Jalapeño, and condolences on the loss of your friend that you posted about yesterday. Sending ???.
Thank you Laila!
Hugs to you, jalapeño.
Thanks hajusuuri. Glad that this week is almost over!
Hugs Jalapeno! I hope you have a more relaxing weekend!
Thank you perfumelover67. I plan on doing errands that I have put off during the week.
Hugs to you! I think ice cream is absolutely warranted.
Dear Jalapeno,
What occurred with your mother’s tombstone reminds me of what happened with my father’s. Without thinking I indicated my father’s first name and his second name’s initial so the tombstone looks more like a business card… Hugs at this sad moment.
Can’t really chase CP points via any of M. Brel’s music but was very touched by learning more about him. I did have a happy memory of Judy Collins’ recording of “Sons of…” SotD Coco Mademoiselle edp Intense. Jacques Brel did live a very intense life, yet he seems to have kept his sense of self…as I say, I found his life history poignant. Thanks, Robin, for an interesting CP!
Glad you liked it!
I’ve been ignoring the cp this week. I just don’t have the brain power right now to come up with something. Floris White Rose with a dab of Limes also. Happy Friday everyone! ?
Hope you have a relaxing weekend.
Thank lillyjo, you too!
Enjoy your weekend!
You too, pl67!
Hello everyone, couldn’t keep up with everything this week but if I could, I would have worn Hypnotic Poison to celebrate the friend who introduced me to Brel – it was her signature fragrance when we were in college. Looking forward to catching up on all the comments and musical recommendations at some point soon…good wishes to you all and thanks Robin for this musical cp, always so interesting!
Did you wear Hypnotic Poison today, or pick something else?
HP is perfect 🙂
In Au Coeur du Desert (w/ accent). This one always makes me happy ?
P.S. I’m in the Bay Area for a wedding this weekend and going crazy with all of the fragrant blooming jasmine!
I just read that San Francisco was rated the healthiest city! Enjoy the wedding!
Thank you! I definitely love walking here so there’s a healthy habit ?
You smell wonderful today!
Merci beaucoup!

I went sniffing at Saks today. It was shortish as I left a little later than I wanted to but I made it. I smelled all the L’AP La Potage (sp?), the three Tom Ford roses, Penhaligon’s Halfeti Leather and they were all meh. I saw two SAs there from whom I’ve purchased stuff, one who used to be the Atelier Cologne perfumes rep at Bergdorfs (he’s now the rep for Vilhelm) and the other one was the Estée Lauder SA from my NJ Nordstrom. I did get 3 perfume samples from EL. Oh oh, the gift card event at Saks is coming up starting April 18 (I think).
Oh, that’s a perfect owl match with 28 La Pausa EdT!
You smell great! Hope you have a back up bottle of 28 La Pausa!
I’m actually relieved to hear the new Tom Ford roses were “meh”, as I don’t need to lust after any more over-priced fragrances!
Happy Birthday M. Brel…..I have been waiting all week to wear Regime des Fleurs Dove Grey in honor of “Fanette” my favorite song. “…but, we never learn.” This icy iris seems to evoke a cold, deserted beach and a hard-hearted woman.
On the other hand, today was a perfectly beautiful day, the first such day that we have had all week….so while I enjoyed the sun, I still smelled icy cold!!
Hoping that we get more weather like today’s soon!
Sounds like a nice scent & weather juxtaposition, Jepster. I just read the wikipedia page on Brel…seems like he was a wonderful person: “…Brel was close to his mother, fascinated by her generosity and sense of humour, which he inherited…”
I actually have a CD of Jacques Brel (“Grand Jacques”) that I’d only listened to once or twice, so I put it on just now for his birthday ?.
Today I tried Replica Lazy Sunday Morning, which I got from a lovely NSTer. Let’s see, how can I make that fit… Maybe it goes with “Il peut pleuvoir,” which is quite cheerful!
I’m off this weekend and am so glad. It’s been cold and rainy most of the week, but it should start warming up a bit soon.
Enjoy the weekend off socks!
My CP contribution is a stretch — I’ve always loved the name of the Off-Broadway musical “Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris”. So this week, I’ve worn fragrances from different classic French perfume houses that I associate with Paris, every day: Chanel, Hermes, Patou, Guerlain, Caron.
Forgot to add Dior!
That works!
