It's Tuesday and Thrift Shop Day. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Parfums de Nicolaï Balle de Match, later renamed L'Eau de Sport, which made me very interested in smelling more fragrances with frankincense. Tea at the moment is Season's Pick Jin Jun Mei from Upton.
Reminder: on 8/20, wear the first scent that made you a fan of a particular note. Suggested by PriscillaE.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: The Serengeti teapot ("Bamboo shoots, tall grass, animals of the Serengeti and basketweave illustrations adorn the tea, coffee and dinnerware, which once laid together, makes for an imaginative setting") is $215 at Halcyon Days.
Good morning from the west coast. A not very good night here despite magic pillow. Monkey mind at work all night.
Finally, my le lebo discovery kit arrived, so today is Vanille 44.
Those nights are the worst! I hope the le labo set is great and that your brain let’s you sleep tonight!
aye yai yai, me too.
I hate when the monkey mind simply won’t STOP and have a rest! I hope the discovery set is fun and that you get rest tonight!
“Monkey Mind:” I heard it here first! Will use it, too!
Beautiful tea set, Robin!! <3
Isn’t that nifty?
It is a lovely tea set of one of my favorites places, ever.
I’m wearing Annick Goutal Les Colognes Vetiver. I didn’t remember it at all, since I found it while looking for a tea fragrance in my box of full bottles. This may be the second time I’ve worn it. It isn’t my favorite vetiver, but I like it. To tell the truth, I’ve been trying to remember which vetiver fragrance made me seek out more with that note. I think it was the Guerlain, but it may have been Encre Noire.
I think mine was Guerlain, but I need to look through old notes.
Vetiver will be my note for this week’s CP – I started my perfume journey thinking it was yucky…
Good morning all! Wearing and *thunking* Cool Water Wave – fun fruity/floral that will be nice for today’s warm weather.
I took yesterday off from the gym and walked six miles instead. I’ll go in later this afternoon (leg day), after I finish updating my student orientation manual for our Fall hires. 🙂
Ugh, you did about 1/3 more steps than I did. And I didn’t go to the gym either, since early 2020.
I did lift weights, briefly, last night! So I am going to slink away now and maybe do some squats, ha.
Hey, some weights is great! Even a few jumping jacks added in work!
I keep ankle weights and resistance bands around for times when I can’t get to the gym.
I have resistance bands, kettlebells, hand weights, exercise bike and mini trampoline. That’s it. It all gets used, but I do miss the gym.
But if I had money for a real home gym, the first thing I’d build would be the sauna, ha. That’s the single thing I miss the most from the gym, followed by yoga classes, and only 3rd the weight room.
Not exactly fitting the CP today in LADDM, but this was one of my first perfume loves, so it nearly fits. Every time I wear it, I wonder why I don’t wear it more often.
I can second this, it’s a great scent but my 10ml are still half full after 4 years
A longtime favorite of mine as well. You smell great.
Ohhh, LADDM is so beautiful, it’s a long time favorite. You smell marvelous!
Love that tea set! If I didn’t have too much stuff already, would seriously consider it. SOTD is Hanae Mori Butterfly, which I hadn’t worn in awhile. Old enough bottle to not have the word “butterfly” on it. Came across it while looking for something else. Got a little frantic last night about the loss of Cuir Beluga to the U.S. market. This morning, decided to double check before gritting my teeth over postage from Europe and discovered I had already bought a back-up bottle, probably when Neiman Marcus was having a sale. There is a (perfume) God!!
I love it when I find a backup bottle. 🙂
*Grin*
That’s so funny!
Finding a BUB by happy accident is always fun!
Hanae Mori Butterfly is so pretty, I love it for bed time.
I’ve never found a backup bottle, but I have found backup decants, and that’s a thrill too. Congrats on your find!
Chypre Siam, because it fits the greyish and slightly cooler summer weather today. I should wear it more.
Grey and HUMID here. Chypre Siam sounds perfect.
I’m in Yves Rocher Pur Desir de Fleur d’Oranger, which I bought after l’Artisan released their 2007(?) orange blossom. The l’Artisan was lovely, but spendy. The Yves Rocher isn’t really the same to my nose, but it’s very enjoyable.
Later today: Mammogram. My appointment is at a location I haven’t visited before, which feels like a bit of an adventure. (Perhaps signal that I need to get out more?)
Good luck with your appointment!
Good luck with the appointment!
Hope that is done and dusted for the year!
It’s smoky and cloudy with a chance of thunderstorms where I’m at so I’m wearing St julep because it smells very fresh and green on me!
Oh, good choice. Hope the storms will clear the smoke…
They seem to have helped!
Wearing a wee drop of Jeux de Peau (always have to go light with this one), on an oddly cool day with a somewhat mysterious sky made up, I think, of layers of fog and lingering smoke. My young ‘un totally rocked his first day of soccer practice yesterday in spite of being on a team largely made up of six year olds who have been playing for years — and here I thought I was giving him an early start! Last day of summer vacation, last day of him being five…
So glad soccer went well, now hope the birthday is perfect!
Oh, Robin. You have a knack for picking out beautiful tea things that I adore but absolutely under no circumstances should be allowed to buy. : ))
Wearing Carnal Flower and am about to head out for a mind clearing walk. It’s cooler today, but humid, so it will probably be a bit of a sweat fest.
True on the tea sets. I love looking at them, but the last time one of my actual tea pots came down out of the cupboard and got used is probably a decade ago. When I got my job with the 90 mile commute, my entire life changed. The retirement account is happier, but everything else sort of got put on hold or simply went to h***! The retirement account is happier enough that thoughts of retiring now seem more like an idea to be contemplated, rather than a “not happening, so don’t even think about it” waste of time… 🙂
Holy crap, that’s quite a commute! D:
One of my friends got this fabulous early 20th century limestone two story house in a tiny town and to make the dream real, for several years she commuted 90 miles until she got a similar job 40 miles away, then finally, 20 miles! I thought she was a tiger! I’ve never had to drive more that 3 mile for my job.
I have 3 teapots, and I use them all frequently, but oddly they NEVER seem to break, whereas tea cups break all the time. I keep waiting for one to break so I can buy another.
Send your cups to my house. My son has a knack for accidently breaking mugs and glasses.
🙂
Yeah, my teapot is still in a box from the last time I moved. I have infusion baskets for my mugs. They’re stainless, and the mugs sturdy, and therefore both are relatively safe from my clumsiness.
It’s cooler here (Seattle) and I’m finally cp-compliant in Lancome Mille Et Une Roses for a fragrance that helped me realize I could wear rose and like it.
I sent a text to a good friend who lives far away and received a “You have the wrong number” text back. We don’t text that often, I guess, usually every few months and I realize she probably just changed her cell number, but it made me feel very unsettled. I wish she would have let me know. This is my college roommate, maid of honor, etc, etc. I’ve sent her an email to check in.
You smell great!
That does sound disconcerting about your friend and I hope that you are able to connect with her soon.
That does sound rather uncomfortable, I hope you’re able to connect soon!
Hoping for a resolution to the “wrong number.”
Oh, you smell fantastic. I should have bought that one years ago.
Cooler here too (just up the coast / across the border from springpansy). I’m wearing Avignon, which is the first sample that got me into incense in general.
I need to go digging through old samples to figure out what was my first rose — tomorrow’s project, probably. Long day ahead, full of meetings and with my kid at home since she doesn’t have a camp this week (we were supposed to go visit family but still waiting for the US to open the border / clarify things and to get my US passport, which has supposedly been in the mail for two weeks already).
Good luck on the passport!!
I didn’t think there were any restrictions to enter the US (as a US citizen), just to re-enter Canada.
There aren’t — I can go in as US citizen, but I’m not supposed to do so on my Canadian passport and I worry that if I make someone mad I’ll lose my Nexus card. (I already lost it once and learned my lesson, not keen to do so again.)
That said, there’s also still all the testing to get through. Friends who’ve gone down over the land border have done the testing before entering the US, just in case, and then it was another $250 each to get tested within 72 hours before entering Canada, as we were going to an island with only one place that does testing. Overall, just too risky at this point.
Yeah, I paid $300 to get the fast-result PCR test before entering BC in April. I’m going to fly into the US in September, wasn’t planning to do anything as I didn’t think testing was required. I don’t think there’s a quarantine either.
No quarantine. I think there’s still a test before flying down for sure (a colleague recently flew to Seattle to see his partner and had to take a test). And there’s the PCR to come back. He struggled to find a place down there that would return it in 72 hours.
So I checked the US site, looks like they accept the quickie antigen test you can get at the airport in 30 minutes, hopefully that is correct. Will do more chacking.
Hove Carnation is my SOTD
Hove! Carnation! I have a little dabber of this, but it seems to have turned. I love that little shop with the quirky rock floor. And the interesting retro scents. I need to get back to NOLA and get some more! Carnation, and maybe Carnaval are my favorites… Once COVID has burned itself out – sad what is going on down there now.
Carnation! I may need to wear my entry point to that tomorrow!
Enjoying the cool cloudy weather, wearing the comforting vanilla/caramel hug of Lira. Saw a whole family of raccoons troop through my front yard this morning, which was an entertaining surprise. 🙂
Oh, that is entertaining!
I was driving on a back road from a farm stand yesterday and the drivers from the other direction kept flashing their lights…thought it might be a speed trap but turned out to be a family of deer chomping away at the foliage in someone’s front yard 🙂
We have a TON of deer up here, it’s a chronic road hazard.
We have a fair amount too, plus a lot of winding country roads.
We have a family living under the school that our house backs up on. They were cute the first time we saw them, but they’ve been getting into my garden and they have no fear…
(raccoons, that is, not deer)
Spending some time with Deneuve and feeling sluggish for some reason today.
Oh, maybe a nap is in order? Deneuve is exquisite. 🙂
SotD = Ashoka. Ok I can say this made me a fan of lotus flower/water hyacinth note.
Aha, that reminds me I can wear Jacinthe des Bois this week!
Henri Bendel Orange Blossom and Tuberose. I bought a few Bendel scents when the store began its slide into obscurity.
Had a fun time last night, going to a live music show at our local auditorium. Some serious musicianship, especially guitar, in an eclectic mix of funk, southern rock, blues. Kind of undefinable in genre and highly improvisational, like jazz but not jazz music. Took me a bit to slide into what they were doing.
And, we met one of our future neighbors! The other duplex in our HOA has been sold, and one of the buyers stopped by to see our finishings before meeting with sub-contractors. The best part of the visit – establishing she has two calicos. She was disappointed to not meet our pastel calico, Agnès, who insisted in staying under the bed until the stranger left.
Bendel had some great fragrances. I liked their fig a lot. And so important to meet neighbors, I think.
Sorry I missed those Bendel fragrances. The fig sounds lovely but of course prices are sky high now on evil bay.
I snagged some of their candles once the closing sales began. Wish I had thought to try the fragrances, but I wasn’t as into perfume then. Neighbors who also have pets are great – you have a built in conversation topic, and someone who (hopefully) won’t mind popping over to feed your pets when you are in a pinch.
I miss Henri Bendel’s, classically New York. The perfume section was not huge and I always smile when I think it’s on what otherwise would have been “dead” display space between the 1st and 2nd proper floors. It’s also the place where I met some of the NY (and former NY) perfumistas.
It really wasn’t huge, but such a nice selection. I still miss that and Taskashimaya, which likewise did not have a huge selection even though the real estate given over to perfume was rather large.
Hooray for cat-loving neighbors! One of our neighbors has allergy issues and has sweet doggies, but their preteen daughter is not allergic, and she happily cat-sit for us – so sweet!
Sympatico new neighbors is always a good thing! The music sounds fab – I miss live music more than anything else…
Oops, thought I was replying to the post above….SOTD is Nishane Ani, a cedary floral incensey thing, which is like the very well behaved cousin of LADDM, which is the ultimate niche perfume in my book….so I did the CP in reverse here, didn’t I? I have several CP compliant scents in rotation for this week – and I am interested to see what other people come up with….
Ani sounds lovely. I like LADDM but it kinda wears me more than I wear it.
Same here, SP, regarding L’Air du Desert Marocain. I love to sniff my sample, and set it out on my cosmetic shelf to exude fragrance, but wearing it just is not the right thing for me!
Woo hoo! I love thrift shops. Really missed visiting them the shutdown, even though I had no need to shop for new threads.
Sip of the day = aged Earl Grey and rooibos chai, both by Numi.
Wearing AdP Bergamatto di Calabria and Carner Barcelona Tardes, both from scentbird decants. We’ll be off to see the grands in Dallas in a few days, so I’m trying out easy to wear, easy to pack scents.
We have Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity Restore, Salvation Army, and two local groups whose stores support wonderful family-and children-centered causes! Yay for thrift stores!! I’ve masked up (and am vaccinated) and have kept up my thrifting as soon as the locals re-opened.
We used to have a Restore and a Salvation Army fairly near us, but they both went poof. We do have a thrift store very nearby that benefits the needy kids in our school district, so I feel great about shopping there!
And I finished my Numi Earl Grey after lunch and have now moved on to mint tea 🙂
And I just ended my day with a cuppa chamomile tea! Whew…
Vivacious! (My perfume, not me 😉 )
Ha! Not me either.
LOL! Certainly not me either.
My son started school today! My morning was pretty hectic, it’s been so long since we’ve had the morning school routine. But now he’s off and it’s very quiet at home. I still don’t have a solid return to office date. But I might start going back once a week now that my son is at school.
I’m in Messe de Minuit. No CP points here, I’ve always loved incense and the smell of pomanders! ?
The fragrance that my brain always translates as “Midnight Mess”! Which, presumably, would involve chocolate cupcakes and pajamas…
Our first day of school is tomorrow, and I noted this morning while we were still in essentially midnight-mess mode at 8am that we were going to have to develop some much more efficient morning habits right away. Not looking forward to the early-morning scramble, or the back-to-school Covid worries, or the long hours alone, but I’m hoping it’ll be a great experience for my son to be back among other kids. Hope the day goes well for your son, and may it be a great year!
LOL!
Best of luck with the morning scramble tomorrow! I think the kids will love being back, and it will hopefully with worth all the Covid anxiety for us parents.
Chocolate cupcakes and pajamas sound like a great combo!
You smell wonderful – got to know MM from a wonderful NST’er who sent me a sample!
MM is wonderful! I love how it’s been working surprisingly well for me in the summer.
!) Finally- relief from the unbearable heat! Marine clouds rolled in and we got some on and off rain! Such a relief!
2) Cap Neroli is the SOTD!
3) That teapot and set above look AMAZING! Certainly not something you would find in a thrift shop, though!
4) If you have Discovery +, check out Serengeti- it’s really fun! And Lupita N’yong’o voice is so hypnotic and lyrical!
But Ede97005 – that is what makes thrifting so wonderful: you *just* might find that tea set. 😉 Hooray for your clouds and on and off rain, because it sounds delicious.
*crosses fingers for the treasure hunt*
And yes- it’s a balm to the spirit, the light rain is!
Our Salvation Army store possibly WOULD have this tea set and would be selling it for $$$. They have nice tea sets now priced at at least $500… Well they also sell teeny tiny 14kt gold charms for $$$ even though You can get a similar charm anywhere else for a lot cheaper.
Oof!
I know it’s for charity and there are generous donors but OOF.
Yes that’s exactly my thoughts too. I know this is for charity and tried to justify… But then I’m thinking this stuff had been donated, DONATED!!
As you know, I haven’t been reading NST much this summer, but of course the day I come back, I find you in Cap Neroli 🙂
😀
I shall be known by this scent!
I’m in Chanel 19 EDT, the scent that started my love affair with iris. It’s overcast but warm here, and I keep smelling smoke (although it might be half imagined and only half real). Trying to figure out what to get my dad for his birthday — he never wants anything, but this year (over-half jokingly) he says he Wants A Present! (emphasis his) Any ideas out there?
You smell wonderful. Maybe a delicious dinner at home that you fix for him? I found I could fix a baked cod, or a South-Asian themed dinner that made my dear Father (and Mommy too) feel special!
I pretty much only give my dad consumables — homemade biscotti and jam, bags of maple-glazed walnuts from our trees, Stumptown coffee or the occasional swanky pantry treat from Zingerman’s. All very appreciated, and no clutter generated! 🙂
SOTD is Soul of the Forest. I snagged a bottle on Mercari. The seller didn’t have much feedback, but it is so hard to find bottles of this without a bloated mark up, so I took a chance and am glad I did. It arrived yesterday. Fir, incense, cedar, moss – all of which made me love it from the dabber sample I had. And now I get maple sap for the first time (maybe a result of spritz vs. dab?), which is a welcome addition. Sniffing my arm and letting my eyes roll back in happiness….
Enjoy!!
Congrats on the bottle! Mercari does have some good gems, pricing can be all over the place though.
Yes, you got that right.
This definitely sounds eyes-rolling-back-level lovely!
We’re back into a snap lockdown, hopefully for just a few days. We’ve had ongoing Covid cases detected at the border, but no community transmission for months, until a case was detected yesterday. Four more found overnight, and it’s the Delta variant, so I’m fully in favour of hard and fast measures.
So commuting to the lounge for the first time in ages.
I’ll wear lavish amounts of Tobacco Vanille. I’m not keen on sweet vanilla, but this perfume showed me that some vanilla-heavy perfumes are fabulous 🙂
Our lockdown(s) has just been neverending since April 2020,you can feel the angst and irritation in the air.a neccesary evil,I suppose.✌???
They can definitely be fabulous, but they’re tricky for me as a lot of contemporary vanilla-heavy perfumes include something that feels cold and shrill and cloying to me, and instantly headache-inducing. Vanilia is a Big Boots vanilla that I can wear with delight, and I also love Geisha Vanilla Hinoki and Vanille Galante for lighter interpretations.
It’s VC&A Moonlight Patchouli for me today.
Smellin’ good!
Good to “see” so many familiar faces!
Life is slowly getting back to normal, but things are still upside down from my personal vantage point!
L’Autrè for a short workday and some pre-packing for a possible move back to the countryside.
Be well fragrant friends!
XO
Hi johano, so nice to see you here! Glad things are getting back to normal somewhat. If you have to move I hope it’s an easy one. Sending hugs!
Good to see you here. Hope your move goes well if that happens!
You’re moving again Johanob! I hope for good / happy reasons.
So happy you checked in, johanob! Sending good wishes from the Midwestern USA to you so far away in your beautiful country.
Nice to hear from you, I hope things continue to improve.
Glad to see you!
Good luck Johano!
It’s good to see you checking in! I’m relieved. Hopefully your move goes smoothly if it happens. ?
Ended up in Estee Lauder Youth Dew bath oil as I needed something with a bit more oomph. A tiny bit of rain arrived yesterday and it’s also cooler today. Small miracles!
You smell *great.* We are cooler here today, too, but still waiting for our much needed rain.
Wish we had gotten more rain, but it was better than nothing. Cooler here too.
Sotd – L’Ombre sur l”Eau – inspired by liilyjo and a definite gateway fragrance for me.
L’Ombre dans l’Eau – Pardon!
You smell great! They should make a sur version!
Great minds think alike!
SOTD = Chris Rusak Timbre EDT
I won this in a drawing in April 2019! Crisp, citrusy, green, galbanum, reminiscent of my beloved Chanel No.19 EDP.

Quite a few places have closed down in NYC. The latest, after I thought they survived the worst of the pandemic because they were open in June and July, all of a sudden closed down. Yesterday, I took time looking at a takeout menu for this restaurant and walked there. I was kind of surprised that their small outdoor seating had been dismantled but thought they were simply getting ready for cooler weather or maybe getting ready to construct another area. What nailed it was a prominent For Rent sign and a half closed inner gate. So sad ?.
Regarding thrift stores, I never met one I liked and have decided it’s not for me.
Yeah, I’m with you on the thrift stores. I’m not one for the thrill of the hunt, I guess…mostly because there is *never* anything in my size there. Consignment I’ll do, but thrift stores just have too much noise (figuratively — in their selection) for me.
Pretty much the only time I go into thrift stores is if there’s no other choice while on vacation in a smallish town.
I don’t do well in thrift stores. I’m too lazy to hunt.
Ha! I’m not much into hunting either. Even when a regular store has a sale, I sometimes end up with items that are not part of the sale.
Late but here. I’ve noticed Jalapeno is not, and hope she is well. My sotd was 24 Faubourg, just because it called my name. I did get to sample Hermès 24 the other day. Citrus and ambroxan. Fortunately I sprayed a strip and not my skin. It wasn’t bad, just boring.
You smelled good. Thinking of jalapeño as well.
Yeah, I tried 24 only on a test strip too. It had a little aquatic/watery note that I was afraid to try on skin.
Rive Gauche for me. I’ve been wearing this off and on for the past 40 years or so. Always works! Walk in the park with a friend today. Sometimes the little pleasures are the best! They always work too! Have a wonderful day enjoying your own little pleasures everyone!
