An update of a pandemic poll we did in late March 2020, again in May, September, and then February. (Maybe this will be our last pandemic-related poll?) As always, answer as many or as few as you like, or just talk about something else.
1. Have you been vaccinated against covid-19? If not, and if you plan to be vaccinated, when do you expect you might get a shot? (Obviously not everybody is planning to be vaccinated, but ya'll know we are not going to have a vaccine debate here, so no need to start a discussion on that topic, and for that matter we're just sharing our news here, not debating anything covid-related.)
2. Rate the virus-related restrictions in your area from 1 to 5, with 1 being complete freedom of movement and 5 being complete lock down.*
3. If your area is back to normal (or opening up), are you continuing to restrict your own movements / exposure? What number would you assign to your own freedom of movement?
4. Are there any fragrances (or related items) you bought, or didn't buy, just because of the pandemic? How else has the pandemic changed your fragrance shopping or usage?
5. What fragrance are you wearing today? And do share something — anything! — wonderful with us, including any plans you might have for the weekend.
Note: top image is Quail Springs area at sunset [cropped] by Joshua Tree National Park at flickr; public domain.
* You can interpret this however you like, but I will repeat a comment I left on the March 2020 poll: "To me a 3 is you can still go out to exercise; a 4 is you can go out to store but can’t wander about without an excuse like store or meds or something, and they don’t even want you taking a walk; a 5 is complete lock down & can’t even go to store." So 1 would be no restrictions at all, and a 2 would be some restrictions (have to wear a mask? some types of establishments still closed? limiting number of people in a store, etc).
1. I have been fully vaccinated. New Mexico did a great job with the rollout.
2. Restrictions are about a 2.
3. I’m still restricting unnecessary activities, both to be extra cautious and because I’m a homebody anyway! Now that I see how convenient grocery delivery is, I may never go back.
4. I’ve purchased two perfume samples from Luckyscent online and an Ellis Brooklyn set from Sephora online, but my perfume purchases have drastically reduced as I prefer to smell them in person.
5. Still commando but planning on Anna Sui Dreams.
My wonderful news: we got a 2-month-old kitten on Monday! The shelter told us he was a dream kitten, and for the most part they were right. He spent some time with a foster family before the shelter, and it shows as he’s very well socialized, uses his litter box and scratching post, and is extremely affectionate. I will say that, because the last time I had a kitten was decades ago (my last two cats were adult rescues), I forgot how exhausting they can be and how, uh, “fragrant” their leavings can be. I’m still processing everything but I’m so happy to have a cat again! His name is Momo after the flying lemur in Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Oh, lucky you to have a new cat! My one big regret about the COVID lockdown is that we didn’t get a couple of cats immediately — we were indoors all the time, we weren’t able to travel and won’t be until next year, probably, it would have been the most perfect time to invite some cats to enjoy our company.
I hear you on the grocery delivery!! I will probably always have at least some items delivered now, but it was lovely to “browse” the produce last week on my first trip back to a large store. (I did some quick trips to a small natural market near me all through the pandemic.)
Congrats on your new kitty!
Congrats on the new furry baby! Wonderful news!
Congratulations on the new little guy! I’ve got two now that are three months old. I was planning to keep their mama and find homes for them but they’re just too gosh darned cute! And I hear you on how busy and destructive they can be! Climbing the draperies, knocking things off the bookshelves, tugging at hanging clothes until they fall down, racing back and forth like little bowling balls including sometimes underfoot when I’m on the stairs, attempting to investigate the refrigerator or freezer at any time they are open, playing with the adult kitties’ tails, much to their annoyance…. and on and on. But they’re so adorable!
Don’t forget the needle-claws ankle attacks….
Jambo Momo!!
I have been watching the Last avatar with my kids and Momo is super cute! Great news on the ?
ConCATulations on your new baby!
Awwww, new kitten!!
Yay for your new little boy! We adopted 2 kittens in December and they have been a handful but have settled down quite a bit since. I too had forgotten the work and difference w/ adult cats. Momo is a great name…love Avatar…watched it and Legends of Korra w/ my daughter though Avatar was superior. 😉
Congratulations on the kitten!
Momo is an awesome name! =^v^=
1. First shot six weeks ago, on a list for the second (AstraZeneca) after 8 weeks. So far so good!
2. I guess we’re at about a 3. I live in New Brunswick, which turned out for a variety of reasons to be one of the safest places in the entire world: there was a total lockdown for a few weeks in March 2020, and then a very slow relaxation of restrictions, but everyone wears masks in all public places all the time. Even the anti-mask protesters in front of City Hall every Sunday wear masks (because they were given citations when they didn’t).
3. We expect to have a minimum 75 per cent vaccination rate by the end of July: the government’s plan is to open it all up on New Brunswick Day, August 2nd. I think I’ll keep wearing a mask in public indoor spaces for a while, out of an abundance of caution (I work in retail and I don’t want to do anything stupid), but I think otherwise I’ll be acting as if everything is normal. I might go see a movie in a theatre!
4. At first I forswore scent altogether or wore the tiniest amount, barely perceptible, because my husband was working from home and I didn’t want to bother him (he is *really* not a fragrance person). As time went on, I started wearing it with a freer hand, because it didn’t seem to trouble him any — at least, he hasn’t complained yet! I’ve hardly bought anything in the last 18 months, just some Lush solids: all that time indoors and to myself made me realize how much I have (and how lucky I am to have it), so I’m trying to use the scents I own and enjoy them.
5. I’m wearing little vintage Caron Montaigne, their entry in the mid-eighties damascone boom. It’s so beautiful, all yellow flowers and warm plush, complex and thrilling like most everything from that era. I have no big plans for the weekend, but I’m trying to learn how to paint watercolour and draw (you can’t paint without drawing skills, turns out), so yesterday I plucked two big clusters of lilacs from a nearby bush — they bloomed all at once and in huge profusion this year — and spend a couple of hours drawing them. I’m not any good at it, but it was a real pleasure to just let my right brain have a go, and having all those lilacs right under my nose, well, that was pure happiness.
I can promise you that in my town, there was never a time when everybody wore masks at all time in public places outdoors. That said, people did wear them on the sidewalk of the main street, where you have to be near other people, and I never saw anybody unmasked in a business (or complaining about masks) here during the entire pandemic.
My county does have one of the highest vaccination rates in the state of PA though…currently 66.7%.
When I visited my sister in early May, in rural Massachusetts, I saw much more non-compliance with masking rules.
You smell amazing and thank you for reminding me about the Montaigne. I found a bottle at an estate sale and you’ve inspired me to get back to it and explore the yellow flowers you described.
I’ve never spotted any really exciting scents at an estate sale, but I think it would be such a good place to find a vintage bottle — the owner loved it (or so I tell myself) and the executors of the estate have no idea of its real value, not in dollars but in memories. And when you buy it, it’s going to a good home, to someone who can appreciate it for what it is. Congratulations on your wonderful find.
I hear you. The fantasy estate sale!
I totally keep dreaming of the fantasy Estate Sale box of…….
This has happened to me once, and I bought (60’s ish) vintage Shalimar ($20) and (80’s ish) vintage Mitsouko ($15) from an estate sale of a woman who clearly loved her Guerlains. I regret I didn’t buy everything in the case, as there were several more that I didn’t know at the time, but were no doubt treasures as well!
What great finds! I too wish that I had purchased more at this sale and am trying to focus on gratitude for what was able to get.
Pyramus, you’re in New Brunswick, Canada?! If true, how did I not know this? I went to UNB Fredericton for grad school and my parents lived in St Andrews for more than a dozen years.
Yes, I live in Moncton.
My answers:
1. Last time I said I expected it would be May or June before I got a shot, but I managed to get mine in April (and without line jumping!) and now everyone in my immediate family (my husband, my son, my siblings, my parents, my nieces & nephews) have all been fully vaccinated.
2. At the moment, I would say PA is at about a 2.
3. I had my first hair cut in April, then I had my first vacation (2 weeks at the beach) and did my first full scale grocery shop just last week (I was masked, and so were most other shoppers). All of these activities felt slightly weird and different — not bad, just different.
I am still not willing to eat inside a restaurant, but my husband is done with all that & already has several times. I am maybe at a 2.5?
4. Really no change…I am still buying nothing.
5. We are having friends to dinner tomorrow night, and it will be our first indoor entertaining (other than small holiday dinners for family) in over a year. I am wearing a dab of Guerlain Iris Torréfié to enliven the house cleaning today. (Thanks to the very kind reader who sent me a sample!)
Enjoy your dinner Robin – yay for some return to normalish socialization!
Thanks yasmina!
You smell wonderful. Iris Torrefie was an NST Splitmeet discovery, and although it lacked the bombshell, room-filling quality I crave, it is classy and could be an FB when the sample goes “thunk.”
My poll answers:
1. Yes!
2. I’d say we’re at about a 2. Our county was just moved to low-risk and the CDC says we can go mask-free if fully vaccinated, but our governor instituted slightly more restrictive rules on Oregon … otherwise I’d say maybe 1.5.
3. I am restricting myself a bit more than is absolutely required, more out of habit than worry.
4. I did most of my perfume-related purchasing via the internet even before the pandemic, so no real change … yet. ?
5. Azemour! And headed for a haircut this bright sunny morning, so I’m extra happy.
Ah, you smell so good I’m sure you will get a perfect haircut.
I did! I love my hair stylist – love the whole salon. The owner does a really fantastic job of hiring fun, competent people and keeping them for years … and an amazing job of retaining the fun, hip salon vibe while being super strict about covid protocols. Not an easy task.
Yay. So nice to get a good haircut.
1. I am fully vaccinated against covid-19 and am so relieved. 🙂
2. Virus-related restrictions in my area are a 2. CA is fully opening on June 15th…
3. I will continue to limit exposure and assess risk accordingly. As someone who is immune compromised, from what I’ve read, solid organ recipients or the immune compromised may not achieve full vaccine effectiveness due to their health status. I’m not overly worried but trying to be practical. The good news is, vaccination rates in our area are robust.
4. I purchased more perfumes than usual. Now I wonder if I’ll have a negative association with those fragrances? IDK. I purchased a few legacy scents, ones that hold special memories for me but also because the company (Terra Nova) closed their doors and their oils will no longer be in production. It’s a shame. I’ve used their scents for over 30 years, and adore many of them.
5. Currently commando, I think I’ll choose something floral, classic Michael Kors, with big tuberose.
We’re headed over to friends who are fully vaccinated for tacos and watch the SF Giants game.
Oh, one new fragrance pandemic craving is oceanic and fruity/floral scents. Favorites are Rem, Escape, and Angel Sunessence Bleu Lagon.
Have fun watching the game! (I’d go just for tacos.)
Me too! I am especially bummed regarding the A’s, they are exploring other cities.
A new stadium has been in discussion for years but never materialized. Now word on the street is they are looking at Vegas. It’s a short plane ride, but very different from hopping on BART. The stadium is run down, and it’s horrifically leaky when it rains, but I love that stadium. I’ve seen many a nail-biting series-winning game there.
My husband is an A’s fan, and they are supposedly scoping out stadium options in Portland. He does not believe it is serious and thinks it’s strictly a ploy to try to get Oakland to commit to a publicly funded stadium deal. It’s too bad, in a way, because he loves the team and he would love to have MLB in Portland, but he doesn’t like it when teams move for this sort of financial jockying.
The hubby has a great point, and the A’s have done this for years. 🙂
I decided on Gardenia oil by Terra Nova and a spritz of Michael Kors. I am wafting big time!
1. Fully vaxxed and so relieved. Had a rough night after my second Moderna shot a couple weeks ago, with fever, chills, and aches. But the next day it was over and I felt just fine.
2. We’re really opening up, it’s just that some venues are still not at full capacity.
3. My own movement is a 4. But I’m still going to continue curbside pickup for groceries, alcohol, take out, etc. What a luxury to have someone bring your stuff out to you. I hope that never goes away.
4. Oh, yes, I’ve been shopping WAY too much in general. Though I did just get a vintage bottle of Shaal Nur (with the round label). It smells just as wonderful as I remember. Is it just me, or has reformulation really increased in the past few years?
5. I was anticipating filling the splits for my Cuir Ottoman, but my package has been delayed by a train derailment (!). So I guess I’ll drain the last of my sample before my full bottle arrives!
Congrats on your old Shaal Nur! And yes, I think so too (reformulations).
Yay for curbside pickup, I will use that forever, if it continues to be offered!
I’m in Azemour on this Saturday filled with a lot of rain. It’s also only 13°C so really cold for late May.
1. Had my first dose few days ago. Except of lottle bit of pain in my arm I didn’t have any side effects.
2. I’d say 2.
3. Yes, 2 as well.
4. Nope.
My seaside holidays is coming really soon.
It is actually colder here! Crazy for late May.
In Southern Indiana, in almost-JUNE I’ve been getting out the flannel ‘jammies! (But saving money on HVAC!)
Only 13C here as well, impatient for summer to arrive.
1. I am fully vaccinated, as well as the rest of my immediate family.
2. We are in 2 and about to go to 1 in June, when NY is set up for a full reopening.
3. Because of work I am in 2 right now and in 1 next month when I am back full time to the construction sites and the office. My own personal activities will be still very limited. No meetings with friends, or going out to eat, or the movies, or traveling, etc, until next year. My only gatherings will be with my family.
3. I have definitely bought more perfumes and shoes during the pandemic than before. I will eventually start slowing down with my purchases and back to saving.
4. I am wearing Chanel Paris-Venise on this cold and rainy day. I will wear Iunx Talc tonight when I will be having dinner with my nephew and his girlfriend at my sister’s place. First time meeting his girlfriend, so I am expecting a nice and pleasant evening.
Happy weekend, everyone! ?
You smell lovely and very summery. Is Iunx Talc good? Never tried anything from the brand.
Thank you, Lucas! Talc is a beautiful scent. Iris, rice and ambrette. Very soft, delicate, cozy with a good longevity. I adore it and I have been wearing it a lot. Another favorite from the brand is L’Eau Sento, which is very similar to CdG Kyoto. Perfect for warmer temperatures.
Have fun tonight pl67!
Thank you, Robin! We had a lovely and cheerful time!
So glad for you: I love my nieces and nephews, too! Aunties rock!
Absolutely! ?
1. I have one vaccine, second on 6/11.
2. Restrictions here probably 2.
3. Not restricting my movements.
4. Since working at home, I usually wears more perfume, at least 2 per day. I bought less because I have too much. Need to use some up. Surprisingly, boring Omnia Amesteste is almost done.
5. I have Sylvaine de lacourte Florentina again today. It good a long time to decide I like it. It feels very thick and substantial to me. I’m polishing brass and bronze and going to the rat park today. I found a new route that forces me to go up the steepest hill twice to avoid the rats, so it’s improved my workout. As for fun, polishing metals really does it for me. Also got a nice little green Buddha at goodwill for 2 bucks. I’m boxing up a lot of decor to prepare to move in a year, or resell it. Too much stuff. Also listened to Guns and Roses Appetite for Destruction. What a sonic assault that was.
I found myself mostly wearing mild perfumes at home, despite the fact I could waft as much as I wanted. Maybe it was because I could re-apply them frequently?
I like the idea of avoiding rats plus getting a better workout!
Rats are awful! They laid a bunch of mulch in the trails, and it turned out that rats were nesting in the mulch piles. For some reason, they are only on one part of the trail. I noticed hawks last time, so they must be picking them off. There are a lot of burrowing owls there, but I don’t know if they take rats too. I hope so. I saw a few small alligators, but they don’t hunt on land. But if those rats get in the water they are toast.
I remember the summer that Appetite for Destruction came out. The juvenile delinquents who lived next door fired up Sweet Child of Mine every morning when they headed out to school (or more likely, anywhere but school). I know they wanted to annoy us but the joke was on them: I loved it.
I was 13 and into alt Rock, but that album blew me away. People always focused on Axl and Slash, but I was a Duff Mc Kagen fan. What a time that was. So many different talented musicians.
1. I have been fully vaccinated as have most people I know so it has been wonderful to see friends and family up close and personal again.
2. Restrictions are about a 2.
3. I’ve been moving about pretty freely and just took a plane for the first time since the pandemic started. I’ve also started to see more clients (psychotherapy) in person but am rolling that out slowly.
I took on more people during the pandemic, mostly former clients, and am now feeling a little overwhelmed at the idea of seeing them all in person. It’s a lot of sitting and my back has liked mixing sitting with walking around the office during phone sessions.
4. I have a lot of confessing to do when Donatella comes around.
My positive reframe is that I’ve enrolled in my own olfactory/aromatherapy graduate program and the cost of supplies has been high. I have to attend daily NST polls and read perfume reviews to learn the latest from research experts in the field, accumulate maximum CP points, memorize commonly used acronyms (ex. FBW and NIB) and participate in swaps and splits to hone the art of packaging and mailing perfume. It’s an intensive program but the hours and hours of rigorous study have been well worth it. And I smell great!
5. Sotd is Esprit d’Oscar from a generous NSTer decant which inspired a FB purchase (more supplies)
allo,
Can you please tell more about your studies and your school?
I did a naturals for a year, years ago and plan on studying again shortly.
I thought #4 was tongue in cheek…
It was but I would love to find an actual comprehensive course!
Wow, your #3 about sitting vs freedom of movement really makes sense, and it is a shame.
I know. It’s an unfortunate aspect of this work. And aren’t they saying that sitting is the new (fill in the blank thing that shortens one’s life)?
Probably nothing here you haven’t already thought of:
https://www.reddit.com/r/psychotherapy/comments/j72zsj/sitting_all_day/
I love your way of framing your purchases!
I will be circling back to Esprit d’Oscar. I am a devotee of vintage Oscar de la Renta. I nabbed a bottle of EdO on the ‘bay and…IDK, I was underwhelmed, yet I sensed…something. It’s in the bottom drawer, waiting.
Pandemic poll:
(I copied the questions, because I won’t remember otherwise.)
1. Have you been vaccinated against covid-19? If not, and if you plan to be vaccinated, when do you expect you might get a shot?
Answer: Yes. Fully vaccinated as of last week. I was feeling vulnerable during the pandemic due to my asthma and other health issues, and it’s a relief to feel like I’m much less vulnerable that way. I think I’ll still be careful and wear a mask in busy stores for a while, though.
2. Rate the virus-related restrictions in your area from 1 to 5, with 1 being complete freedom of movement and 5 being complete lock down.*
Answer: I’ll go with your 2 for Pennsylvania, though on the Philadelphia (and surrounding areas) news they’re saying that infection rates are high in our county.
3. If your area is back to normal (or opening up), are you continuing to restrict your own movements / exposure? What number would you assign to your own freedom of movement?
Answer: I’m trying to figure out the new rules, and still reluctant to go out to certain grocery stores and the Walmart. People were particularly bad at the local Walmart about wearing their masks as chinstraps, or having their noses hanging out uncovered. This was both customers and employees not wearing masks, or wearing them wrong. Not looking to start an argument, just an observation about true conditions and how they made me feel.
However, I’m looking forward to being able to visit with friends in a safe manner, individually or in small groups of people. And hopefully we’ll be able to get together with Dad’s sisters and brother and all their respective families later in the summer.
4. Are there any fragrances (or related items) you bought, or didn’t buy, just because of the pandemic? How else has the pandemic changed your fragrance shopping or usage?
Lots of fine fragrances I didn’t buy, but I got a lot of books and garden plants this past year or so. As I’ve said, it’s fortunate that Donatella doesn’t count books. (lol!)
5. What fragrance are you wearing today? And do share something — anything! — wonderful with us, including any plans you might have for the weekend.
No fragrance yet, but maybe something light and soothing at bedtime. 🙂 And really no plans for the weekend, except for needing to return a library book or two and make a (reluctant) trip to our usual grocery store.
When the weather is better than it is this weekend, I’ll get out and be able to enjoy the roses I rhapsodized about late Thursday night/early Friday morning. For those of you who went to bed at a reasonable hour and missed my “night owl” time comments, I was serious about wanting local or local-ish people to stop by to smell the roses. 🙂 Please e-mail me at neyronrose at gmail dot com if you think you might be able to come see the damask and alba roses in bloom. I find it wonderful to be able to share my enjoyment of fragrant plants with people who will appreciate them. 😀
Neyronrose, I can’t remember what county you are in? And I realized that I actually don’t know how high cases are here, I just know we’ve got decent vaccine coverage at this point.
My “our county” there included us both. 🙂 I’m in Chester County, some miles north of you, but not that far. A lot of people participate here, and I haven’t been commenting regularly these past several months like I did for the previous year or two. On Action News the other day, they had a graphic that said that risk was high in Chester County, and lower in the other counties around Pennsylvania.
*around Philadelphia.
So sorry, I forgot you were in Chester County too…for some reason I thought you were the next county over.
Well that’s weird, although when I look at the county covid map, the more rural areas to the west of me (West Grove, Oxford) do look pretty bad compared to Kennett.
1. Not vaxxed. Medically, none of the current available vaccines I can take.
2. Level 2, possibly? Relaxed mask wearing, but some places require them. Bars are closed, but outdoor gatherings are allowed for vaccinated people, while others remain socially distant and masked up.
3. Level 4-. I won’t change much, minus getting into the vet’s office. I don’t have a need and I can’t risk getting someone else sick or myself.
The most fervent anti-vaxxer that I know got covid recently and the vaccine right after. Another friend just had covid after full vaccination, and she’s a mess. Crazy. Level 4- is good for me.
4. Yes. I’ve bought old comfort perfumes. I have been exploring different indie perfume companies or websites a lot more. Generous NSTERS, have given me so much to choose from, I have gone hogwild.
5. It’s cold and rainy, so debating Gold from Commodity or Angel. Looking forward to the ? I am baking soon.
Thanks again for everyone’s kind wishes. Very appreciated and the support is moving.
Annie, do you anticipate that there will be a vax for you later?
Your friend with a breakthrough case — that is what I’m worried about, esp. since it looks like you can get long term problems from a mild breakthrough case. I think it will be a long time before I eat inside a restaurant or go to a movie.
Robin,
I do believe there must be another vaccine on the horizon. Someone mentioned Merck was making one. I have faith. People are smart. Look what they have already accomplished.
My friend got infected by another person in her group, also vaxxed. This friend never gets sick. Maybe there was a bad batch around here. Feel so bad for her.
People really are smart…I will keep fingers crossed for you. And your friend, that’s awful.
Last chance! I still have not gotten an email from you about my Chanel split. You must email me TODAY if you want in — I am doing the decanting tomorrow morning. I am emc . 71 17 on g-mail.
1. I got my first shot almost two weeks ago.
2. About a 2, I’d say. Mandatory mask wearing on public transport & closed areas still, some restrictions on large events.
3. I’m only going to places where I have to go. I’m sick of being at home, but I would like to wait for my second shot of vaccine before I start socializing again.
4. I think I ordered more samples in the last year than the previous 3 years combined… It has been very hit and miss, so maybe not my best financial choises, but I love the novelty of trying something new. At the moment I’m eyeing Olfactive Studio’s discovery set.
5. I’m wearing Kedu by MEMO on one arm, and Ineke Field Notes from Paris on the other, from samples. These two are definitely hits.
For something wonderful: my roses are in full bloom. They are fragrant, too. One of them is a David Austin type, I think this one:
https://eu.davidaustinroses.com/products/roald-dahl
But I can’t remember the name of the climbing roses, they’re creamy coloured and also have a tea-like smell.
My perfume logic was that perfume samples were olfactory substitutes for trips to Positano, Brooklyn, etc. etc.
I like that logic! 😀
I thought it was the best choice for me to wait until I was fully vaccinated before I started socializing again. I figured that would be safer for me and for my friends. So I was with you on that. 🙂
That is a pretty rose, the ‘Roald Dahl’ one. 🙂 There are a fair number of climbing roses that I can think of offhand that are cream-colored and tea-scented. As long as you’re enjoying them, that’s what counts. 🙂
Take care!
Yes, better to be on the safe side!
I think it has a German name but I can’t remember anymore. But anyway, like you said, the point is that they’re making me smile. 🙂
1. I got my shot 4 weeks ago. I ended up doing a single shot J&J
2. CA is relaxing mask mandate on June 15th. I would say my county is at 2.
3. I am personally still at 4. I did get a haircut but everyone was masked. I try only to go outside when necessary, which in my case is just doctors visits. I am a germofob on a good day, so this is not a surprising pattern for me. I do dread going back to the office in September.
4. I did buy a few fragrances to split up. No change in my fragrance wearing behavior.
5. NO scent today as I will be decanting and, so I am sure something will land on me.
Glad you have until September, at least!
1. I am fully vaccinated.
2. I live in Texas and we are about a 2, because the governor has decreed that no one can be forced to wear a mask, especially in a public building. My library is now open with no restrictions.
3. I am at about a 3. I wear a mask in public, but I am shopping and going to restaurants, still wearing a mask.
4. My fragrance habits didn’t change much. I held off on purchasing as long as I could, but that only lasted until about March.
5. I’m wearing Old Spice Classic, which is a go-to on the weekend. I start my second week of vacation on Tuesday. I have two doctor appointments set up.
You smell great PriscillaE!
1. Yes, fully vaccinated and life is so much brighter now!
3. I’m still being very cautious, but I’ve eased up a bit. I’ve started taking my son to the pool, and felt okay taking him into the (almost empty) visitors’ center when we were camping last weekend, and I feel fine about spending time outdoors unmasked with vaccinated friends. And my vaccinated, long-distance boyfriend can now visit without us both having to get Covid tests and quarantine before we see each other.
4. I suppose I can blame the pandemic for breaking my long no-buy streak — over the past year I’ve bought a few small things. But my income took a hit last year so I’m being very conservative about discretionary purchases in general.
Still commando today. Thanks for all the fragrance advice for my romantic evening last night! I wound up going with a light spritz of Seville a l’Aube — the aforementioned boyfriend had had a difficult past couple of weeks and I thought a little orange blossom would be uplifting. We had a wonderful visit and it was so nice to reconnect after months apart. And then, alas, farewells all too soon…
So glad you had a wonderful evening!
Getting close to last call for the splitmeet! There are still splits open…
1. Fully vaccinated! Yay!
2. Like the other NorCal folks, I’d say we’re at a 2 on restrictions.
3. I’m getting out more (TWICE this past week!) and we saw friends in person for the first time in over a year. But I can’t work up the nerve to eat at a restaurant, yet, not even outdoors. Call me a ‘3’.
4. No change in fragrance purchasing. My usual mix of deliberate, well-thought-out purchases and wild impulse buys. Donatella will be pleased.
5. No scent yet, will be sampling later.
Something wonderful — just booked a short vacation in Yosemite for our anniversary in July. So looking forward to it!
Oh, Yosemite, that really is wonderful!

Pixel’s sample troves are fabulous…just sayin’.
1. I’ve had my first shot, and might be able to get my second by the end of June
2. British Columbia is at a 3? We are starting our re-opening plan!
3. I am at a 3? Still planning on eating only on a patio, but also hoping to travel within the province next month. After that perhaps I can tempt people to visit me, as am still too scared to get on a plane.
4. Local perfume shop Scentrique bravely opened a b&m store a few months ago, so have made a couple of purchases. I have made my last blind buy, I SWEAR! (Fragrancebuy’s fault) Did some modest online shopping overall.
5. Just put on some PdN Baikal Leather, my first purchase from Scentrique.
5. What fragrance are you wearing today? And do share something — anything! — wonderful with us, including any plans you might have for the weekend.
What all did you get from Scentrique and Fragrancebuy? I got Xerjoff Italica from Scentrique and Prada Infusion de Rose & Xerjoff Golden Dallah from Fragrancebuy (blame hajusuuri for the Prada!).
Classy choices! On my side:
Scentrique: couple of sample sets and two bottles of Baikal Leather
Fragrancebuy: AA Teazurra (no), Joy (No – reformulated to death), and Light Blue Italian Zest (yes, happily)
I hope you like the Prada!
Won’t know until November, it was shipped to my SIL in San Diego. 😉
1 Yes, fully vaccinated healthcare worker with the first in December 2020 and second in January 2021.
2 I’d agree with Robin that PA is a 2.
3 I’m still cautious. I haven’t eaten at a restaurant in a year and five months and I only get takeout. I’ll eat at a restaurant again when around 90% adults are vaccinated, which may be never. I do go grocery shopping with some home delivery too. My number is a 3.5.
4 I bought more scented candles online last year during lockdown. Really no other changes.
5 Wearing a sample of Frederic Malle Iris Poudre, because irises are in bloom.
Seriously, I do think that will be never! I am surprised we are doing as well as we are. But wish PA would start one of those lotteries to get more people motivated.
I was fully vaccinated against covid-19 as of March 24. I waited another 2 weeks for higher immunity (I’m old!), and then began to do medical exams and errands that I had put off as less time-sensitive.
Here in Virginia, restrictions are basically 1, complete freedom of movement. Masks are still required in health facilities, public transportation, etc., in line with CDC guidance, and businesses can still require them.
People in this area have been very cautious. I will probably still wear a mask indoors and try to distance — partly to be polite and partly waiting for higher vaccination levels. I’ve started to ride the Metro again, but if/when I encounter it packed with out of state tourists or sports fans again, I may revert to taxis. I am generally avoiding restaurants, but I did have cool beverages with a vaccinated friend in a huge, empty indoor restaurant in the middle of a very hot afternoon a couple of weeks ago. I may throw caution to the winds and go to one or two of the less visited museums next week. (They are all reopening.)
I’d say my freedom of movement is 5 in principle, but I don’t really do anything unnecessary.
I had mostly stopped buying perfume because I was out of space, but I did treat myself to a few things during the pandemic. You really can’t let a 100-year excuse go to waste! ?
It’s COLD this weekend so I am wearing a classic 90s amber by Dionne Warwick.
I highly recommend a recent On Being podcast interview with Jill Tarter, co-founder of the SETI Institute, who inspired Jodi Foster’s character in Contact (the film, and of course Carl Sagan’s book).
I’m in Arlington County, Virginia, where cases are finally down to the NYT moderate level after so long in the red. Yay! We are over 60% vaccinated with at least one dose, and I think we will get to 70% vaccinated before too much longer.
I had forgotten about Dionne Warwick perfume. Pretty neat that you have it!
A while ago, I came across a YouTube video of her talking about it and decided to find a sample.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-l9sFOtFbn4
In those days, obviously, she and probably everyone around her were smoking. I find myself wishing I could sniff this perfume against that backdrop — for like 30 seconds. I never smoked, but I remember coming home from a party or bar with my hair and clothes saturated with cigarette smoke. Perhaps we can never again experience perfumes as they smelled in their day. ? How cool that you remember it!
This sparks a big question–if she was smoking, did she actually know what her perfume smelled like? So many former smokers I’ve known comment on how food tastes and smells differently when they finally manage to give it up!
Yup! And I think it explains why 80s perfumes were so strong.
I’m wearing TF Métallique, a surprise present from my brother. I was totally amazed that he went to Sephora and selected a perfume for me, we are in our 50’s and he has never done anything like this. And he managed to pick something I like and don’t own, a minor miracle in itself. Wonders never cease.
That’s absolutely wild! What a great guy.
You smell even more great because of the special back story!
How sweet!!
I would be completely floored if my brother did that! How fun!
Aw, brothers!!!!
I was fully vaccinated on March 25.
I think Portland is about a 2.
I don’t know what level I am. I have traveled by air several times but I haven’t eaten in a restaurant. I guess I feel safer on airplanes where everyone must be masked and the air is scrubbed frequently than in a restaurant with everyone eating unmasked and no air circulation. I wear masks at the grocery stores but not on my daily walk.
I don’t think I’ve changed any of my perfume habits, though I have noticed I’m not sampling as much. I think that’s because I have a low success rate with sampling rather than anything pandemic-related.
I am wearing Jour d’Hermes today. I had a big, 9 ft tall, overgrown shrub in the back yard that I have been gradually cutting down. It’s shin-high now and I may cut it down to the ground this afternoon.
Wow, how did you even get to the top of the tree?
You’ve been so dedicated to working on your garden this year! What will replace all the overgrowth you’ve removed?
Hi, FB – I have been learning to love Jour d’Hermes, although grapefruit is my Kryptonite. What was the shrub you cut down? We are dealing with a giant yew…..
Mine was a yew as well. I used a ladder and a chain saw. Now I’m enjoying seeing the back yard instead of all that greenery.
1) I’m fully vaccinated, as is my husband.
2) I think restrictions in Raleigh are at 1.5? Masks are not consistently required, but are required by some stores. Bars and restaurants are open at full capacity. Hockey games are hosting 12000+ fans.
3) I’m not really restricting my movements any more, because I work in a high school so am exposed to more than a thousand teenagers daily. I discovered during the pandemic that I’m actually pretty OK with work, groceries and occasional pet food runs and not much else.
4) Not buying much perfume, but started that pre-COVID.
5) Wearing Taunt by Dedcool today. Something good? My husband took a day off grant writing and we’ve spent it together.
.
And your trip to Vegas in July!
I love hockey! But 12,000 fans is beyond my experience, even pre-pandemic – bet it’s intense! Portland is home to a junior hockey team and I used to be a season-ticket holder. Can’t watch hockey on tv though – seems like they’re always pointing the camera someplace other than where I want to look, plus the puck is hard to spot.
1. I was vaccinated back in early March. It was the J&J vaccine, so I only needed one shot. I was fortunate to be able to get it at my workplace. My husband is fully vaccinated now as well, but that was much more difficult to get done. The “Vaccine Finder” site was a pain to use–endless dead ends, typing and clicking, entering information two and three times over, just to find out that a location that supposedly had vaccines was out of stock after all, or had vaccines but no available appointments. We had scheduled one appointment for him–at a location about 40 miles from where we live (the closest we could find)–only to have it cancelled. It was supposed to have been the J&J vaccine, and distribution of it was suspended two days before his appointment. Fortunately, I managed to find another appointment for him, although it meant two shots instead of one. He had his second Moderna vaccine a couple of weeks ago, so he is good now.
2. I would say my area is about a 1.5. That is, everyone can go pretty much everywhere, to anything that is open, but some things still are not open or taking place or are still limited attendance numbers (concerts, plays, museums, etc.). Those closures or limitations are at the discretion of the business, however, not being imposed by the state or the city. A few places still require masks, but most do not.
3. I would rate my own personal freedom of movement right now as a 1 or 1.5. I pretty much just go where I need to and do what I want. We have been eating out ever since the restaurants reopened last May. We have only been to one play, but only because all the others were cancelled. There are a couple of plays scheduled within the next two months that we plan to attend. The museums are open, and we will be going to one of them next week. We hope to be able to attend a concert in October that has been postponed twice already.
4. I don’t think the pandemic itself affected my perfume shopping, but other things did. We had to have quite a lot of work done on our house last year, and it put somewhat of a damper on non-essential shopping.
5. We have some travel plans, which I am very much looking forward to. We have a couple of short trips coming up soon, but the big one is a planned trip to Colorado in July to visit my husband’s family. His parents are in their late 80’s, and have been understandably reluctant to go out of their apartment much at all for the past year. Normally, they travel around quite a lot, and would make it to Texas once or twice a year, but not anymore. With all of us being fully vaccinated now, we feel it is safe enough for us to go see them.
I got the J&J too and then the news came a day or two later. It has been very quiet vis-a-vis very negative side effects and I am not sure if no news is good news.
I haven’t been hearing anything much about additional serious side effects. I am hoping that means there aren’t any. The immediate side effects of the shot really threw me for a loop. I wasn’t expecting the extent of the joint pain that I experienced.
If we do have to get boosters I am going to try to schedule it sometime when I can afford to have three days off afterward when I don’t have to do anything. Otherwise, everything seems to be OK.
Hello Perfume Peeps! Long time, no post. I follow when I can, but am very out of the loop.
1) I was fully vaccinated as soon as the Moderna vax became available since I work in healthcare. The second dose did throw me for a loop, but nothing a couple Tylenol didn’t take care of. I will say it was very nerve wracking working on covid units prior (and somewhat even after) to vaccination with patients coughing in my face, the reuse/lack of PPE, and understaffing creating unsafe work environments. I was in Arizona, one of the states with highest transmission and hospitalization rates, from 10/20 to 5/21. The entire hospital except 2 units were transitioned to Covid Units/ICU’s.
2) Currently in Washington state, probably a 2 right now. Most indoor businesses are still requiring masking, but as far as I can see, most are open (businesses, that is) and people are out and about.
3) I tended to socially distance before it was popular and continue to do so. At work,
of course, I’m masked for the full 13 hours. If I’m indoors, I’m masked. If I’m outdoors, which is usually the case, or in the van, I don’t. I rarely go into an establishment without an agenda- groceries, supplies of some sort, etc. I haven’t been “window shopping” in forever, and I do miss being able to wander about in malls and stores.
4) Buying stuff has been very limited since I started traveling, and this year, especially so. I did buy some PFG shirts and shorts from Columbia in preparation for summer here in the PNW. And, I bought a PRECIOUS, spent way too much money on it, but regret nothing! That Precious is a full bottle of Vero Profumo Naja. Did I mention NO regrets?! ?
5) Wearing one of my favorites today- ELDO Fils De Dieu. This has been a staple for me the past few months because I find it to be a very happy, uplifting scent that has consistently bolstered my mood. As far as weekend plans, I’m off but will stick to local parks because wilderness areas and campgrounds will be packed and loud. Something good is watching my savings grow. I never thought I would enjoy depositing money more than I enjoyed spending it, but alas, it’s true. I guess that makes me officially *mature.*
Happy and safe weekend to all, with a special thank you to all the military peeps! One of my favorites is this guy right here:

Hello Deva!!
thought of you often being safe with patients. Glad to see all is well. Hope T-Rex is a happy camper!
We are well, thank you for thinking of us! T-Rex is still a hot mess and a sassypants! We send you hugs, and hope you and yours are doing well. ??
I was hoping you would get Naja!
Glad you popped in!
Glad to see you here, Deva! So good to hear you and T-Rex are doing fine! Hugs!
Lovely to hear from you!
Woohoo! Great to see you here!

Waving hi!
Nice to hear from you Deva! Big thumbs up on the Naja purchase.
So glad you are well (and smelling great) Deva!
Hooray for finding a “prreciousss!” Glad you stopped by and fragrant high-fives for your frontline work in health care!!
Nsters, here a no affiliation PSA:)
Indigo Perfumery has 20% off with code redwhiteandblue20off
I snapped up a Galivant Bukhara.
Thanks for the tip and excellent choice!
Nice!
Late to the party to share that my SOTD has been Lyric, because it’s gorgeous.
As for the poll, I received my second shot in early March. I am immunocompromised, and it’s not clear how effective the vaccine is for me, so I’m living life like a 3 or 4 most of the time, but I agree with others who put Portland at a 2-ish. I won’t eat indoors with strangers and I’m on leave from work, since kids are only just getting the vaccine now. I’m only socializing with others who are vaccinated and close in my circle. But, I did go on a short trip to the beach, and we’re discussing a road trip to Eastern Oregon, if we can figure out how to entertain and feed ourselves safely enough. I will continue to wear a mask for some time, I expect. The pandemic has meant spending more time here with all you enablers, so I’m sure my purchases are up a bit from where they would have been!
*Speaking* of Amouage lotions and creams….I have the Lyric hand cream (FragranceNet, bigger coupon, etc…) and it is so nice right before bedtime. Just sayin’…..
You’re working hard for an enabler pin today. 😉
1. I am 1/2 vaccinated. I’m hoping to get the 2nd shot by mid-July.
2. We are at about a 3. We can travel in our immediate health region.
3. Not back to normal and still restrict movement. We are at a 3 personally. Grocery shopping once or twice every 2 weeks.
4. The only change to my shopping is that I haven’t purchased any fumes in person since we haven’t traveled anywhere! I purchase a few things online that I’m sure of but I’m also sampling more, therefore saving $$ on full bottles which could be more spendy. (Although I buy more cosmetics and moisturizers online). So it’s probably evened out financially.
5. I’m wearing Cristalle edp today. We arrived at the beach condo!
Have fun at the beach! How long are you staying?
Thank you! We are here for a glorious week!
Yeah for beach trip…mine begins in about 12 days! /~~
Enjoy your holiday!
1. I have not been vaccinated yet.
2. My State is a 2, I think. Everything is open with mask mandate, unless you are vaccinated. Limited capacity. On June 1, the capacity is lifted for outdoor venues. On July 1, no capacity, social distance or mask mandate for anyone. Also in June, I am told we will open fitting rooms.. sigh…
3. I’m a 2. I wear my mask, and social distance but I shop in person.
4. My shopping habits haven’t changed. There’s never been a rhyme or reason to it.
5. Thanks to the splitmeet, I am wearing Shalimar Philtre.
Something wonderful is this coming Wednesday my daughter will be graduating high school!
Because she is an ASD student, technically she gets a certificate of completion.. I am thrilled for her! ( I am nervous about the large crowd though since the capacity limit will have been lifted)
You smell great! And congratulations to you and your daughter!
Congratulations to your daughter.
Congratulations to you and your daughter!
Congratulations to your daughter, and you!!!!
Congratulations on your daughter’s graduation!
Adding more congrats, and hope the ceremony goes well (and safely)!
Happy weekend all! I’m very much enjoying my visit to my mother, and catching up with other friends and other relatives.
We’re at Level 1, which is normal life, the only requirement is masks on public transport. As I walk to and from work, I only need a mask in a plane, or the occasional time I’m in a taxi.
I’m expecting to be vaccinated sometime before the end of the year. We’ve started with border and health workers, older people in care and are now moving on to other older people and people with underlying health conditions. Then it will be the rest of the population. It’s not the same urgency here as many other countries.
I don’t think I’ve bought much more than usual, but every purchase has been more exciting given the strange circumstances of the world.
Wearing Neroli Outrenoir today, a slightly late entry to the CP. It reminds of sunny days, which is comforting on a wet and cold day with mist obscuring everything 🙂
You smell great. I am glad your visit with mom went well!
You smell wonderful
1. Vaccinated with J&J in April – woohoo!
2. In these here parts, with Gov. Murphy lifting most of the restrictions effective May 28, NJ is at a 1.5. The .5 is because businesses can require masking (Whole Foods still required it today) and we still have to follow the federal mandate of masking when in public transportation, etc.
3. Personally, I am at a 2.5. I have met with family more and not socially distant (we’re all fully vaccinated). I ate outdoors with a neighbor earlier this week, not masked. I am still masking even at stores that no longer require it, although I am not as strict with double-masking. I still won’t get on a plane (probably until 2022) and I also would not get on a cruise for a long time, if ever, even if you pay me to do it.
4. Fragrance-buying ??♀️.
5. SOTD = right now, remnants of Creed Sublime Vanille from a Basenotes Split. It’s nice but does not last long! Normally, I don’t judge a perfume by its longevity but I am doing it because it’s Creed. Earlier today, I layered Theo Kalotinis Coffee Addict and Vanilla at half dose so as not to offend a scent-phobic family member!

And something nice – my Caturday post!
https://www.instagram.com/p/CPdk6weBuUq/?utm_medium=copy_link
Saving the rants since the post is already too long!
And BTW, where is AngelaB? I hope she’s well.
I <3 your =^v^= – erday post!
You could not pay me to take a cruise either.
I think I will always wear a mask now in indoor retail areas — and never touch an elevator button with my finger
1. Vaccinated and feel great!. My husband the same but parents and extended family is about 50%; dad yes, mom no. Planning to visit my parents mid-June after a year & a half of not seeing them and thinking of staying in a hotel. Is that bad?
2. NYC is a firm 2. Masks in elevators/building, stores, subway.. off everywhere else. I will say, however, 75% of people are still wearing a mask outdoors. Folks are not ready to give ‘em up partly because it’s a real pain taking them on & off when going in and out of places. The other reason is just how scarred NYers are from last year, especially those first 2-3 months.
3. I only wear a mask out of care and respect for my neighbors and fellow human beings (plus the scolding I got from my neighbor across the hall). Personally I am comfortable not wearing one ever again, forever.
4. Perfume buying is currently on an uptick. Had little interest this time last year but now looking for some new scents to join my collection.
5. Today I’m trying the new A Drop d’Issey by Issey Miyake – gorgeous scent! Only down side is it lasts only about an hour but it’s def on my buy list as I’ll just plan to spray throughout the day, another plus of WFH 🙂
Yay for seeing parents! My husband and I are heading north in June to see his elderly father (our only remaining parent), whom I adore and last saw in October 2019. We will drive ourselves there over two days and stay in a small rented lakeside cottage on our own; dad lives in an assisted living community nearby. I really can’t wait to see him, and stay at the lake for a couple of weeks. I’ll work remotely for part of the time, but not all of it.
I still wear a mask when entering businesses or indoor spaces; my workplace requires that when I’m onsite (not often) and many businesses do too. In this state, it is likely that many unmasked people are also unvaccinated. Besides, now that I own several very comfortable masks, it’s not a hassle and I think it’s a habit I will keep, especially during cold and flu season and while traveling (which I love to do and hope to do often, soon!).
So lovely! What a reunion that will be with your FIL. And a lakeside cottage sounds amazing.
I’m hearing that a lot re: continuing to wear masks because of the benefits. Can’t help but think of my travels in Asia over the years where many wear masks and this is part of their culture. Perhaps that will be us too, especially in the large, global cities like NY.
I still take a mask with me when going out and put it on if I am not sure of the individual business’s policy, but I take it off if I see many unmasked people inside. I find all masks very uncomfortable in the Texas summer. The other day, I had one one for a few minutes, and I was sweltering inside that thing. They were great back in February when we got that freeze–I kept mine on even when I was alone in my car, just to keep my face warm. Now that it is in the upper 80’s with high humidity, I am glad not to have to wear it all the time.
I can’t really imagine staying with either of my parents anymore. I like to have my own kitchen(ette) and to have some quiet space of my own after spending time with them.
Thank you for this 🙂
I feel the same, but my parents expect me to stay in the house with them. As a result I visit less often.
I’m sorry that it is more comfortable for you to stay away than to visit and stay in a hotel. I don’t have that dynamic with either of my parents, but I can imagine it easily enough. I was afraid my mom wouldn’t get it, but she’s gotten much more laid back as she’s aged, and will say things like, “Oh well, now I don’t have to clean the house!” when I mention I’ll be in the area but not staying in her guest room. She’s a little bummed at less time together, but able to accept my desire for some space.
If you mean is it bad to stay in a hotel rather than with your parents, I say no. We prefer to stay in hotels when visiting family. We like to have some privacy and time to ourselves, not worrying about making too much noise if we stay up later than they do, being able to come and go as we please, etc. My in-laws now live in a 1 BR apartment with no accommodations for guests, so there it is not even debatable anymore.
It’s interesting that we’ve always stayed in a hotel when visiting my husband’s parents but with my parents, we’ve stayed with them.
In some ways I prefer the hotel but there’s a potentially richer experience staying in someone’s home. Getting into their world.
I don’t know. Still undecided. Feels like we’re setting a precedent once we make this decision.
We usually stay in hotels when we visit family. It gives us all a little breathing room; we don’t have to sleep on the dreaded pull-out couch; and everyone has enough hot water for showers. It helps everyone, I think.
1. Fully vaxxed and incubated as of mid April!
2. NJ is at about a 1.5. Some stores are still requiring masks, as are most employers. Employers no longer have to accommodate WFH for those who can, but lots of them are still allowing or encouraging it.
3. Prior to vaccination, I was a strict 5. Now I’m at about 3. I have gone grocery shopping and got a haircut, all while masked. I will visit unmasked with my parents, in-laws, and siblings, all of whom are vaccinated. I won’t eat in restaurants bc it would be being unmasked around other ppl whose vax status I don’t know. I find I am having a difficult time trusting ppl to wear a mask if they are unvaccinated. Mr. Vee and I have been saying that we will probably wear masks on public transit and planes (once we start riding them again in 2022) for forever. I continue to WFH full time even tho I could work from my office. I deal with Health & Safety issue for my company, so I feel it is important for me to walk the walk of being very cautious.
4. Hearing about how covid could affect your sense of smell led me to think about and appreciate mine more, which led me to want to appreciate perfume more. That’s how I ended up on NST this year, and why I try to describe the scent notes in my SOTD posts. Forcing myself to put what I’m smelling into words helps me to actually smell it, if that makes sense. Much like allo, this is a learning journey for me, so I have bought much more perfume in the past few months than I ever have, especially samples. I’m spending less on clothes, shoes, and makeup tho, so it all balances out. But I do have have a loooooong list for Donatella.
5. SOTD was Hermessence Vetiver Tonka, and wow is it gorgeous! I like the vanilla note from tonka more than straight vanilla because the tonka is sheer, not syrupy or sweet. And the vetiver gives it a warm, woody, and rounded aspect that makes this such a welcoming, cozy frag. I absolutely love it.
Thank you for reading my novel
That’s fun that the pandemic brought you to fragrance! If you are struggling to write your thoughts on perfume, I wonder how talking about them will be (has been)? I have found that meeting with other perfumistas over the years has shown me I don’t really know how to TALK perfume, as I mostly just read and write it! I start stumbling over my words, trying to find the descriptions. Of course, I’m terribly introverted, so I’m sure that’s part of it, but in any case, I’m certain I’d do better with more consistent practice.
Oh MR, I get that! I encountered a friendly SA at a Von Maur some years ago, and she asked me what Estee Lauders I liked best. I, the No. 1 EL fangirl became totally tongue-tied! I had at that time probably a dozen well loved EL’s but I just blanked!
Oh how funny! I would get stuck on the idea of “best.” Whenever an SA asks me what kind of fragrances I like, I don’t know where to start! I’ve learned to say something along the lines of, “I like the idea of a fragrance wardrobe rather than a few signature scents,” hoping it gives them an idea that it’s hard to summarize my tastes.
I’m sure talking will be even more difficult for me than writing, since I can take my time when writing my thoughts. The key for me though, is translating what I am smelling into words – whether they are written or spoken. Forcing myself to articulate what I’m smelling helps me focus and, over time, makes me more discerning. I try to do the same thing with craft beer, which is my other hobby.
In the faraway future if I ever fly again, I plan to wear a mask. So many times in the past I have gotten sick from flying, it made me not want to travel, but I felt too self-conscious to wear a mask. Not any more.
Mr Vee and I were in Europe mid-March 2020 when the US announced the travel restrictions and we had to scramble to get an earlier flight home for fear that the US would close the border, even to US citizens trying to get home. The flight was at 100% capacity and at least two people developed severe covid symptoms while we were in the air. Mr. Vee and I wore n95 masks (we had a couple left over from a package we got while doing home renovations). I’m convinced it is the only reason we didn’t catch covid on that flight.
1. Fully vaxxed and so grateful for the mRNA vaccines!! I was a long-hauler and I’m back to 90% of pre-pandemic health status, post-vaccine. It really cleared the remaining crud from my system.
2. Florida has pretty much been a 1 the whole time, sigh. I’ve lost friends and neighbors. Really wish our governor had boosted masking, but he didn’t.
3. I was very strict, but now that I’m vaxxed, I vary depending on the situation. If I’m in a crowded shopping area, I still mask up.
4. I bought a few decants that I am really enjoying, and a few samples. The only full bottle was UNUM LAVS home spray, so beautiful in the evening!
5. SotD is CdG Rouge, I love a good beet perfume!!
That’s wonderful that the vaccine helped clear your system! I’ve read that elsewhere. What a blessing!
I’m not familiar with CdG Rouge and beet in fragrance but I’m intrigued. How would you describe it? Rooty? Some sweetness?
Rooty and sweet, and very much a beet!
On my to try list!
1. Have you been vaccinated against covid-19?
YES, and very thankful for that, and my family being fully vaccinated! Thank you, scientists!
2. Rate the virus-related restrictions in your area from 1 to 5, with 1 being complete freedom of movement and 5 being complete lock down.*
I would say 2-3: most private businesses are still requiring masks to enter stores, for example, since there’s no way for them to ask or know anyone’s vaccination status, but most other restrictions have been lifted.
3. If your area is back to normal (or opening up), are you continuing to restrict your own movements / exposure? What number would you assign to your own freedom of movement?
Yes, I continue to restrict exposure, even though I’m fully vaccinated. I limit visits to indoor spaces like stores, but not outdoor spaces. I continue to do a lot of shopping online instead of in person. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to huge supermarkets with self checkout lanes instead of real cashiers. Avoiding those for the past year has reinforced how unpleasant I find them. I will continue wearing masks in stores and while traveling when we start doing that again this summer. Now that we’ve seen how many other illnesses the masks can reduce, like flu and colds, and we all own masks, why go backward?
4. Are there any fragrances (or related items) you bought, or didn’t buy, just because of the pandemic? How else has the pandemic changed your fragrance shopping or usage?
I’ve been more adventurous in daytime fragrance, since I’ve been working from home for over a year and don’t have to worry about co-workers’ or students’ reactions. Overall, I’ve bought fewer fragrances and have been working to use more of what I already have. I’ve made more of an effort to buy creations of independent perfumers, and buy directly from them when I can, to support them during the past year.
5. What fragrance are you wearing today? And do share something — anything! — wonderful with us, including any plans you might have for the weekend…
I haven’t yet chosen today’s fragrance but I think I’ll go with St. Clair Scents’ Gardener’s Glove, as I plan to spend a lot of time this weekend working in my reconfigured vegetable garden! https://www.stclairscents.com/shop/gardeners-glove-1
RE: your No. 4 – yes, shutdown did lead to some edgy choices. When our office was on half-staff and no in-person appts., I wore Youth Dew one day!
LOL! Youth Dew may be the only scent I wear in which I do a spritz on a cotton ball to then dab onto myself or a “spritz-the-air-and-walk-through” sort of application! It is amazing stuff.
1. Fully vaccinated since April (2 shots, minimal discomfort)
2. Level 2, masks not required in the street, outside but mandatory in shops, cafés and restaurants
3. Not yet comfortable with with sitting at cafés, restaurants, although yesterday, for the first time, I sat at a café, outside, to have tea but all the tables near me were empty
4. Not changed much, slightly up
5. Eau de Rochas
I have a large batch of applesauce on the stove to have this evening.
Yum, homemade applesauce!
Agree! My mom makes it often and it’s soooo good.
Doused in copious sprays of Eau d’Hadrien and enjoying the sunshine this morning. We’re heating up here (93 on Tuesday! per Mr. G just now), but it’s a lovely 63 at the moment, and I have big plans to tackle some more weeds in a bit.
I love Eau d’Hadrien – you smell fantastic!
Hi All,
I’m in Miss Dior (semi vintage) and enjoying a trip to SF after attending my husband’s aunt’s memorial in Monterey. It feels strange to be out and about but it’s also fun to be vacation-y again. I might have to swing by the Diptyque store while I’m here…
I think the Splitmeet is closing soon and for anyone interested, I can still split:
40mL of D’Orsay Vouloir être ailleurs, a lovely new take on Olivia Giacobetti’s Tilleul
25mL of Edmund Roudnitska’s Le Parfum de Therese
20mL of Isabelle Doyen’s Nuit de Bakelite
Contact me at l e s l i c o r t h e l l AT gee male
You smell wonderful! Thanks for such a great Splitmeet line-up 🙂
I just e-mailed you about the PdT!
1. I and Mr. MossyB are fully vaccinated – yay! Our office allows anyone also FV’d to dispense with masks; I have, and I am fully back to normal behaviors, However, I attended a very crowded food truck event a week ago and I will say I was very observant of my health for the next couple days…
2. We are overall a 3-4 range.
3. As I say above, I don’t mask anymore, but keep a mask in my pocket or on a mask lanyard, in case a business requires it, or if I were in a situation where someone else may be uncomfortable and not able to move away.
4. Mid-shutdown, I did buy more perfumes. Okay, a lot more. But I am going back to a “better” normal. Splitmeet came at a good time, because I have learned that 10mls of something lasts a long time, and I have so. many. bottles.
5. SotD is Amouage 25 body cream. It really hits the spot. I have said before that I am not a packaging person, but the jars, bottles and boxes for the Amouage house are *really* classy, IMOH.
Wonderful family reunion in about two weeks at the beach; we will be keeping a “bubble” with all meals either house-prepared or take out, and no other close-quarters activities, just golf (for most of them) and beach walks (for me and Mr. MB). Really excited about it!
Off to read comments!
Ooh, I have coveted more than one Amouage body cream product, but have always talked myself out of them. Jub 25 sounds wonderful as a body cream!
FragranceNet; hold out for a bigger coupon (35% or more). A25 body cream is the real deal. You’ll get at least skin scent all day. I will sometimes go ahead and spray some other thing, say after work. But it is very perfumed and works well as a SotD.
You can get 35% any time at Fragrancenet with coupon code RENG7.
😀 !!!
LOL. You are both conspiring against me!
You are a major major enabler! But which scent? Hmmm….
Yet another rainy day here – I have seen more rain in the last six weeks than an entire year in San Diego. Guess I’ll have to get used to it. Wearing Papillon Bengale Rouge.
Sorry for the rain but at least you smell good!
1. Yes, as of March 27.
2. Texas/Houston is probably at about a 1.5. The governor has opened everything up, but a number of stores do still request that you wear a mask, and I’m complying, e.g., grocery stores. A few have signs indicating that fully vaccinated people don’t need to.
3. I’m also at about a 1.5. I’m happy to go to a grocery or drug store, and have eaten at a lot of restaurants, though I often either sit outside or go at odd hours so I’m almost the only person in the place. I would not go to a crowded place even if they did offer outdoor dining. I went to the Galleria once to return an online purchase, but don’t plan to go back for awhile–it was just too crowded for comfort, especially with younger people.
4. I bought less perfume during the pandemic, perhaps because I wasn’t going into stores and trying things in person. If I recollect rightly, only two FBs–both online purchases. But my rate of and habits of perfume wearing have been the same.
5. I’m wearing L’Artisan Mure et Musc Extreme, which is fruity and bright. I had a good visit with Mom this afternoon. It turns out the Memory Care place is very good for her. She even has some friends there, or people she chats with. A few people there are completely out of it but others are friendly and they can exchange memories. It’s a well-decorated and brightly lit place and is much more cheerful than one would expect.
I have no travel plans due to the looming likelihood of shoulder recovery surgery, which puts one out of commission for six weeks. I’m peeved at how surgeries like this (and my hip ones) routinely expect you to have someone at your disposal to stay with you and take care of you once you go home. No, in fact, we don’t all have access to such handy free healthcare attendants! I hope to get covered for some rehab time, but then will basically have to hire someone to come help me because you aren’t allowed to lift anything at all for six weeks. Mainly I worry about my cats–feeding and doing litterboxes. I can probably find a student to do that (for pay). I’ve also just realized I need a new summer wardrobe since everything has to button or zip, and I mainly wear light t-shirts. Well, at least–I hope–I can look forward to a conference trip to Montreal in the late fall. A beautiful city with neat shops and restaurants and some fall color, I hope.
Not vaccinated, my husband is a doctor and we have seen dreadful side effects from the vaccines, so not vaccines for us, any medication with such side effects would have been pulled long ago from the population.
Hardly any restrictions in Alberta, treating covid like any other virus is not a bad approach.
I was in France recently but didn’t smell any perfumes I had to buy.
