Niche line Byredo has launched Mixed Emotions, a new unisex fragrance.
Mixed Emotions, an epicene scent designed to reflect the tumultuous nature of our times.
Drawing on the Byredo philosophy of translating fragmented memories and abstract ideas into scent, Mixed Emotions presents an olfactive sketch of our current, collective state of mind. Comforting notes of maté and the sharp sweetness of cassis sit within a wooden framework; the reassuring scent of black tea disturbed by violet leaf synthetics.
Additional notes include birch and papyrus.
Byredo Mixed Emotions is available now at Bergdorf Goodman, in 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum.

I’m not sure that I need my perfume to reflect “the tumultuous nature of our times”. If I did, it wouldn’t be called Mixed Emotions – my feelings about the pandemic are pretty set in stone.
Was just thinking along the same lines. No one needs a perfume to reflect what’s going on right now.
Couldn’t they have just written about a troubled romance or something? Yikes
Ditto!
All true, but “disturbed by violet leaf synthetics” is such an excellent line 🙂
If I write a memoir of the past year, I’m nicking that as my title!
its a Rolling Stones song…
Yeah I need an emotional fire blanket, not a reflector.
I agree with MissGoldsmith; this is perfectly observed.
And that ad copy just leaves me, even more than is usual with this kind of stuff, wanting to say “Henh?”
Exactly. And perfectly said.
My family makes perfumes as a hobby, and we created one called “Plague Doctor” last year to help us get our sense of smell back on track after we had COVID. It’s very strong! But I don’t think it would be a commercial hit, nor would I want it to be….
Excellent — and I take it that it worked?
We could certainly smell it! It was based on orange and clove. We worked out a whole smell rehab program with samples and kitchen scents and so on, and we are all able to sniff away with impunity and accuracy now. Thanks for asking!
I think there might be a market for such a thing. Apparently there is a massive online forum of people struggling with smell.
I know there is some thing people are doing where they burn an orange, but your method sounds much better.
So glad it worked for you, it is really tragic that some people are never recovering their sense of smell. (Of course it is more tragic that so many people are dying, so everything is relative.)
This is a truly horrible disease, and I’m comparing it to my experiences with cholera and malaria (retired RN). That being said, we need to help those who suffer for a long time with anosmia and parosmia, and as perfumistas, we can! My youngest son has had his sense of smell rebound with improvement over baseline, so it really helps to do a “smell rehab” for COVID folks- if anyone in your neighborhood has had COVID with anosmia or parosmia, give them some perfume samples and encourage them to smell everything they can, everyday. It’s our most neglected sense, but without it, you all know how much of our human experience is lost.
