The daily lemming

Posted by Robin on 8 December 2020 11 Comments

Boujee Bougies is a new candle brand, and many of you know one or more of the principals behind the project. Nick Gilbert, who used to comment here regularly when he was working a perfume counter, went on to work for Les Senteurs, Penhaligon's and L'Artisan before launching Olfiction along with Thomas Dunckley (you might know him as The Candy Perfume Boy), Ezra-Lloyd Jackson and perfumer Pia Long. Their five offerings include Succulent ("With juicy green notes of cactus and tomato leaf, Succulent is verdant and fresh, evoking a glass conservatory overflowing with lush tendrils") and Queen Jam ("Queen Jam is a Finnish conserve made from raspberries and bilberries...Our Queen Jam throws in a few roses..."), as well as Cuir Culture ("pup masks, leather jackets, old books"), Gilt ("whispered confessions, incense smoke, gold leaf") and Hellflower ("sulphur, burning flowers, brimstone"). 60g for £25 or 220g for £55, at Boujee Bougies.

UGH, thank you, usually I find errors like that 3 years later when I’m looking for something else.

For the life of me I have never run into a cactus that has an odor. We winter in Tucson and I’ve tried cactus pads, flowers, tunas and nothing. Maybe this is sone scent I can’t smell. There are other scents in the desert-creosote, sage, night blooming jasmine, orange trees, but cactus, nada.

That being said the candles sound lovely and the price seems reasonable.

We have a huge South American cactus in the front yard. When it blooms, it is very fragrant. Maybe the tropical cacti are the scented ones.

Or possibly it is not meant to be taken literally, like many fragrance notes.
