Happy Almost-Friday! It's also National Lemonade Day and World Mosquito Day. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Gobin Daudé Sève Exquise, from a bottle that is not quite in perfect condition. I don't know that it is really a unicorn, but I wouldn't own it if I hadn't found it half price at Takashimaya in New York. Now Gobin Daudé and Takashimaya are both gone.
Reminder: 8/21 will be Captured Unicorn Friday. Wear a perfume that you thought would be impossible to get, but you managed it. If you have not yet captured a unicorn, wear anything you like and tell us about the unicorn you'd like to catch. Suggested by Undina.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Speaking of mosquitoes, Florida is letting millions of genetically modified mosquitoes loose today! Apparently, Texas will be following suit shortly.
SOTD is CdG Jaisalmer.

Hmm, interesting, I wonder why? I know they are part of the food chain and all…we talked about a technique called CRISPR in my ethics class that has been used to genetically modify mosquitos, I wonder if that’s what was used.
They’re being used to decrease mosquito populations- to manage dengue fever, yellow fever, etc. Apparently they are releasing modified females, who can breed, but the offspring of that breeding, all females, die in the larval stage.
Should have added, I’m not sure the exact method of modification.
Perhaps they haven’t seen Jurassic Park, yet.
Right? I’m very ambivalent about GM anything. I do understand the desire to eradicate transmission of disease, but I think there might be a better way.
Or more to the point, the horror film Mimic! Genetically modified cockroaches! Guillermo del Toro, brilliant!
Ok, since mosquitoes literally pounce on me every time I walk outside in the summer, my own personal selfish feeling is “kill ’em all!!” but I recognize that they have their place and it’s not all about me lol.
I’m walking crack to mosquitos and fleas.
Just hearing “genetically modified mosquitoes” gives me the creeps haha!
Yeah, me too. Just because we can doesn’t mean we should. Hope your eye is not painful today, and heals without any further intervention!! ?
Genetically modified insects sounds creepy, doesn’t it? Is it to curb the transmission of Zika virus?
I agree re: just because we can, it doesn’t mean it’s a wise idea. What unintended side effects could happen as a result of utilizing these GM mosquitos?
Seeing what Zika does to babies though, it’s quite worrisome.
Mosquitoes have their place in the ecosystem- they exist for their own sake, and provide food for fish and other creatures (with their larvae).
But with a shifting climate and incursion of a human population into areas where they did not live before (wetlands and bogs), it seems necessary to do the GM thing to curb so many of these transmitted diseases.
I would debate “necessary.” I think we as a species are capable of finding a way to mitigate transmissible diseases without genetically modifying anything. We’re smart, and I think fully able to find a way. But as humans, we seem to think we have dominion over everything. This all part of the Judeo-Christian upbringing most of us in the US have had, and so deeply ingrained, we don’t question it. The exact reason we’re in the environmental mess we’re in currently is because of this belief system. Just my opinion, of course. I’m very happy I’m old and won’t be around very much longer to see the catastrophe heading out way. Maybe a bit nihilistic, but we certainly haven’t helped this world in any way, shape, or form since we walked out of the slime.
Reading this a day late, but I couldn’t agree more on pretty much all your points. I’m scared of what climate disasters (and other disasters) I’ll witness for the rest of my life.
Whoa! Nasty!
I recall Texas’ problem with love bugs and saw this first hand a few years ago at the airport. Gross.
Very gross, but luckily love bugs only transmit love, right? ?
I know, and given how many groups have worked against it, seems a little mean to do it on World Mosquito Day.
(I am neither for nor against, I just don’t know enough. And would not want to debate here anyway!)
?
I read this article in the New Yorker a few years ago re. mosquitoes and GM. It did change my perspective and it’s a good, interesting read – I recommend it!
https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2012/07/09/the-mosquito-solution
That’s an excellent article! Thanks for posting the link??
And what could possibly go wrong??
As much as I adore Guillermo del Toro, and I’ve seen so many of his movies, having lived in FL for 20 years, I HATE cockroaches. No way could I watch that movie!
Had I known it’s a lemonade day I would’ve pulled out my sample of L’Orchestre Electro Limonade.
But in fact I am in Bergamotto di Calabria from Perris Monte Carlo, relatively close to lemonade ?
No unicorn points for me.
I love Perris Monte Carlo! How would you describe this one?
It’s fresh and zesty with hint of woods
Should be gettting my hands on the samples of the lavender and mimosa ones in a few days. Will keep u posted ?
I’m in Chanel Le Lion, which won’t be a unicorn for long as it becomes more available here. Looking forward to what others think about it. I see the comparisons on Fragrantica are to various versions of Shalimar, so there you go.
It is another gorgeous day here!? And by gorgeous, I do mean just absolutely perfect. We’ve been having the best weather for about the last week and a half and I never want it to end. I’m just not gonna think about the fact that it will. I was up early and went for a run along the lake. I’d taken a few days off (like, um, 13?), so I made myself just do it this morning. The view is always beautiful and though I don’t always enjoy the process, I feel so good when I’m done and it sets my mood for the whole day.
Good for you! Taking days off is sometimes a good thing. You got back on the horse, which is what really matters.
I’m very interested in that Chanel, but I don’t want to do a blind buy. The last one didn’t work for me at all, even though the notes seemed right up my alley.
Yeah, days off are a good thing. I partly justify them by the fact that my job is not sedentary. I don’t have a Fitbit, but I’m sure I walk several miles each day.
This was just a small decant, I don’t do full bottle blind buys anymore. I’ve learned they are too risky.
I got a decant if HG Vivacious from a split meet. Not what I thought it would be at all. No full bottle blind buys here. I’m too cheap! Plus, I’m really trying to limit size because of space. Travel sizes are my jam!
I didn’t think Vivacious would be my thing but I tried it and loved it. I wish HG still did travel sizes.
Catanosmia, don’t know if you’ll see this since I can’t reply directly, but drop me an email and I’ll forward my decant to you if you like. Taiga101 in the land of yahooligans
What do YOU think about Le Lion?
Also I’m jealous of your days off and great weather!
I like it but don’t love it as much as Coromandel. It does remind me of Shalimar but with a slight leather note, kind of like Shalimar and Galop had a baby, lol. I’m really curious to hear what Shalimar lovers will think of it. I thought of you and ltsg right away when I tried it. You got in on the split, right?
I can NOT wait to try this one. I want to compare it to Shalimar and also am so curious to see a Chanel’s ‘take’ on Shalimar. I think I will love it.
I am hoping the Hajusuuri’s split offer will be a Good’. How is the silage, longevity?
‘Go’ not good! Why does spell check think she’s so much smarter than me? She is NOT THE BOSS OF ME’?
Ooh this description makes it very appealing to me!
So great that your run felt good this morning! Yay!
That is why I’m back to running this year–chasing that feeling of “oh, that was the right thing to do!” Maybe my fitness is back up to where that can be possible more often than not. It’s a slow process. I’ll never be a *good* runner, but I can reach the point where it’s enjoyable.
I’m right there with you. I’ll never be a *good* runner either, and I’m perfectly okay with that. I’m in it to move and know I’m doing something good for my body. ??
I’ve heard great buzz about Le Lion, the notes sound so good…. But, perhaps a decant will work for now. I have the vat-sized bottle of Coromandel, I should wade to at least halfway through that monster before considering any FB Chanel purchases. 😀
Chanel & Monster in one sentence ?
I’m sure marketing folk at Chanel ne approve pas.
Oh,, I suppose that wasn’t the best use of words, was it?? ?
Mmm, I do love Coromandel. This one is a like.
Sounds wonderful!
I was just telling my husband yesterday that I’m getting bored with my jog/walk routine. I go every day and I’m loosing motivation. Yesterday we mixed it up with a bike ride followed by a walk home. Still not loving it. Maybe I need to take a few (13? :)) days off.
Lol, yeah maybe you do.?
Sounds like a great few days and enjoy the days you have off! I’m starting to teach (and study) next week, so until then, I try to do longer workouts (indoors only, first heat, now smoke, soon smoke & heat). But – I want to hear more about the lion ? :)!
Reminds me of Shalimar with a leather note. Not like BV leather, but soft like Hermès. If you like Shalimar I would give it a try.
I found a new place to walk with fewer people around because it’s on the side of the street adjacent to a major highway (versus next to condos). Many pluses but yesterday, I saw a biggish bird making loud noises. Methinks it was an eagle and I made sure to keep an eye on it because I did not want to be in the papers as eagle ? food.
Your big bird could have been a Red Tailed Hawk. They don’t look very big when they are flying, but it is a bit of a shock to see one up close and personal!
It could very well have been. I just don’t want to be food ?
Perfect almost end of the summer day. Sunny, bright, cool.
I lavishly sprayed on CBIHP Gathering Apples ?. It is so fleeting, but a fun scent. I will reapply several times during the day since I have a crave for it.
Burning also a BBW fall candle.
Back now to finish the last 2 mandatory online training courses.
Wishing everyone a safe and healthy day! ?
Perfect summer day twin! (notice how I left out the words “almost end of the”?) ??
Good luck with the training!
The whole week here has been gorgeous too despite few showers. I have always loved the summer-fall transition days. My favorites of the year!
Sounds perfect, especially the “cool” part. I bet you smell fabulous!
After crazy hot days I am enjoying the cool ones we are having now. We will be in the 70’s today. I wish the whole year was like that!
I’m with you, sister!
High five for burning through those training courses!
Thank you, KellyC! One more to go this afternoon and I will be finally done!
It was a perfect weather day today! ?
Indeed! ?
Little sleep last night. I woke at midnight and then at 3 and once I started riding the worry train, it was all over. So, grabbing coffee and a little Theorema for my unicorn, and heading to my living room desk to start the work day.
I will head out for my 4 mile walk in a bit which will help more than anything.
Sleep deprivation is awful, especially once the worry train pulls into the station. Hope tonight is better.
Yes, and that train just won’t let me off when it’s the middle of the night!
I miss good walks- just so hot and too much smoke right now. Hope you enjoy yours and it helps with the anxiety.
I know. I really feel for Californians right now. Just so awful. I hope it will improve soon. The walk will help – it always does! Anyway, I always feel better in the light of morning. I just wish I had more sleep!
How’s your eye doing? Are you feeling okay? That was a terrible experience for you.
The fires are so worrisome. I have a friend who recently (six-weeks ago) moved to the heard of fire country. They had to evacuate.
Joining you with little sleep for this week in the Sisterhood of the Bleary-eyed, sleep deprived. I woke at 1am, didn’t fall asleep until 3:30am… Oy. 😯
I grabbed an espresso and will join you with a little Theorema (Esprit d’Ete) by Fendi.
Heading out for my 4 mile walk right now.
Sisterhood of the Sleep-deprived – I love it (and I hate it!). Those walks are saving my sanity for sure.
That title would make a great book!! It could be full of fascinating ramblings and snippets of wit and wisdom – and a perfume
For every one?
Especially THIS Year.
Satirical sisters of
Sleep
Deprivation!
Sorry about the sleep challenges. I’m right there with ya. I think post-Nov. I should be much better. Work is intense right now, which is good! but stressful.
You can join the Sisterhood of the Sleep-deprived as well. Although the goal is really to have NO members!
HA! So true! I wish our Founding Charter had no members but here we are…
My sleep schedule has been really disrupted for the past week or so. And I’m having really weird dreams. Not quite in the same category as outright sleep deprivation, though.
Selva do Brazil from a sample about to be thunked. Off to make sandwiches.
Make one for me, please 🙂
Yeah, can I put my request in? I’m just across the park 😉
Another beautiful day here, too. My husband and I went for a nice long drive through Michigan’s fruit belt yesterday, buying peaches and plums and vegetables, but I had my usual August shock at seeing sprays of yellow leaves in the walnut trees and the maples having that bleached look they get before they color. Just not ready for fall yet.
Oh yeah, perfume. Wearing Hove Rue Royal today.
I can’t remember who posted about leaves falling yesterday, but it really stuck in my mind. This morning I went out with the dog and really searched around, and sure enough, one tree is losing leaves with even a minimal breeze. I am a bit stunned because it’s still in 80’s here, all day, every day. I guess it’s purely that change in the trajectory of the sun.
I didn’t get out to buy fruit last weekend like I’d hoped to do. So jealous of your outing! Did you get anything especially wonderful?
Red Haven peaches are wonderful and we found some. No apricots though, there was a late freeze in May.
Sounds heavenly! We don’t get leaves changing down here in Houston. One day you wake up and all the leaves are gone. Luckily I’ve been having a full stock of fresh fruit though. I actually made a fresh peach jelly with gelatine last week and it was the perfect antidote to the 97°F heat.
Peach jelly sounds wonderful. I remember when I lived in Houston, it was so different from having 4 distinct seasons. The chinaberry trees are beautiful in December, though.
I’m not sure I’d recognize those! I have been obsessed wit jellies recently.
I was so confused my first winter down here! At Christmas there were red leaves on some trees, Xmas lights on the palms, and pansies in bloom!
One thing I love about autumn is the harvest – all the incredible fruits and vegetables!
In MI, WI and MN summer can feel at once forever and fleeting!
No changing leaves where I am at yet, but I heard geese honking as they flew overhead this evening, which is my second sign that Fall is coming.
I have recently decided to get motivated to finish my half full bottle of no 5 edp and that tiny bottle of no 5 vintage extrait. I am debating of what I should wear for the CP tomorrow. L’Heure de Nuit, Sarrasins, De Profundis, Shalimar Ode a la Vanille, vintage L’Heure Bleue or Theorema is my list.
That is a decent list, Dawn!
Just got to choose one.
Nice choices!
what a list!
Great list..I think I will wear Shalimar OdV
Bois d’Iris (the VCA one) today, which is always a perfect decision.
Thanks for the support and horror on the eye thing yesterday! It was indeed like a form of torture but it’s much better and vision and pain are fine. Now just fingers crossed it worked so I don’t have to go through that again- which I would refuse without some kind of anti-anxiety meds lol.
World mosquito day, huh? I can honestly say one of the best things about moving out west from Alabama is the lack of mosquitoes. ‘Bama is sooo bad. I COULD go for a lemonade right now though- the good kind, not the fake kind.
Oh, great news! (I just asked about your eye above – now you can ignore me.) And you do smell wonderful.
Mmm! You smell lovely 🙂
very sorry abour your eye troubles, and good for you for taking care of yourself. I had laser treatment for an eye condition, the doctor promised it wouldn’t hurt, but he was wrong, every pulse of light felt like sticking my eye with a sharp stick.
Glad to hear your eye is better now!
Bois d’Iris is never wrong
Eyes better?
Glad to hear that you are all right after yesterday!
I missed out yesterday but wishing you a speedy recovery- I think I would be just like you in my reaction- I don’t think I could do the laser surgery. I would panic at something coming that close to my eye with out my instincts kicking in! You are brave!
Wishing you extra good health.
Hi all!
Having a sadly busy morning off, and not a fun thing in sight. I went with Moustache de Rochas, which I found in an antique mall. And I found a ton of it. I likely have 200-300ml of it in a ribbed glass splash bottle. One of Edmond Roudnitska’s creations (with his wife if I’m not mistaken) and explores his use of bruised fruit. It smells to me like a Fougere but they’ve come such a long way from this point it can be hard to tell. It’s warm and easy-going. Just gorgeous.
Stay safe all!
The re-issue of Moustache is really being talked up right now in the YouTube community. It’s supposed to be pretty good, but not as good as the original, naturally.
I remember seeing that, now that you mention it! One day I’ll track down a sample. I truly have a lifetime supply, haha.
I never really venture into antique stores and often wonder: how common are vintage perfumes really? We have a row of antique stores in our town and the next town over….
Not that common sadly. Some stores never have a single one, and some have a dedicated booth of it. But pre-Covid I would look and look. I have a weird schedule compared to most so it was easy to find an hour or two between duties. This particular bottle was among factices and I almost missed it! It was a crazy low price too.
Thanks for responding! Maybe I’ll pop into a few stores this weekend as a distraction, just to see…I suppose I could also call and ask, but where is the fun in that?
I do love a good treasure hunt. I have been quite lucky in wanderings, I’ve found vintage Dior, RL’s Safari, Gucci.
Don’t call, they won’t really look.
I decided to wear my unicorn a day early, so I smell lovely with a couple spritzes of Attrape Coeur. I went on a spree a handful of years ago and bought up all the decanters had left of this beauty (sorry if that means I bought it before you could!). Then a lantern bottle became available on ebay for not an awful price. I was very excited to win the auction.
I will smell lovely whilst unpacking boxes in my classroom today. We had bond work on the school going last year, and pandemics do not prevent our responsibilities to the taxpayers to keep things going on schedule. So everyone was asked to pack up before we evacuated so that construction could continue without us. Now, I unpack as if I’ll be back in my room this year, but more and more folks are projecting we won’t be. I probably won’t decorate the walls while I’m there today. That seems like something to be done when I know exactly what situation we’re all returning to. (And it’s a BIG project!)
In our local districts, educators were asked to work from their classrooms even though we are all online for now – about half of my kids’ teachers seem to be on site, and half at home (those with kids, delicate health, etc.). I hope whatever your district decides will work for you!
I’m in Lostmarc’h Iroaz today. It is a unicorn for me only as to a “real” full bottle – I have enough of it in decant form to last my lifetime, but I would have liked to support the company with a FB purchase. Oh well.
Takashimaya! 🙁
Loved (and so miss) that store.
SOTD: JM Vetiver & Golden Vanilla
Just now eating breakfast – ugh. Lunch at 3/4pm?
Looking forward to drinks later with an old friend. So many fun places to sit outside in NYC right now. Plus, weather is cooperating perfectly.
I loved Takashimaya too. And I think I remember there was a bookstore very nearby that sold beautiful Japanese paper for writing and folding.
That sounds fun – a drink with a friend outside. I was hoping to do that today or tomorrow with a couple of choir/work colleagues, but too much smoke, me thinks! Enjoy!
Loved it. Had a bottle of Takashimaya fragrance, too.
Today is JM Vetiver and Black Café.
I had a unicorn picked out today, however , I am out doing errands, and Deva would approve, I am having people keep there distance by , Shalimar body cream, pure parfum and several sprays of EdP. ⚠️
Wowza! You smell marvelous!
People have been edging closer in lines lately. Perhaps some Angel or Youth Dew (which I like very lightly applied) might back em’ up a few paces.
I don’t want to choke myself out either!
If my Miel de Bois wasn’t so precious to me….
maybe Angel on top of Youth Dew and then top it off with Amarige.
Oh lord my eyes are watering just thinking about the combination of all three!
Each are nuclear-strength on their own, can you just imagine? ? ?
People would keep double distance.
Last year, I was in an airport, and they had a small duty free store with Amarige on the shelf. I stared at the tester for a long time. Then I walked away.
I feel like I want to try that combination. Someone hold my beer!!! 😀
maybe Angel on top of Youth Dew and then top it off with Amarige.
You go girl! ?
It is so so gross out. The air is thick with smoke and it is impossible to escape the smell. I am in the opposite of a unicorn–MFK’s A la Rose. It is not really helping. Friends are evacuated from their homes. My husband drove through a fire on 580 last night to get home. For those battling COVID, the air quality adds a whole other horrible dimension.
How scary! Be safe!!
Yeah, we’re right on the coast but I can’t imagine how horrific it is for folks in the wind’s path or in the East Bay. How scary for your husband to drive through the fire, yikes!
I can’t watch the news, hearing and seeing destruction is more than I can bear to watch right now.
I powerless, like I can’t do much, but I posted Fire & Rescue information, and information on who to call if you have livestock/horses that need to be moved on my FB page. For those who may need to bug out, hopefully, that will be helpful information.
Ugh.
I hope you stay safe and sound.
So sorry to hear this. Stay safe!
I’m so sorry to hear this, I hope you and your family remain safe.
Stay safe OF!
Hope you and your family are well and stay safe!
Yikes! We are a little less smoky today but I think these fires are all closer to your area, at any rate! My daughter “manifested” rain yesterday (where do they come up with this stuff? Ah yes, Tiktok). Let’s hope it works!
Oh dear – all this sounds terrible. Hope u keep well.
That is when an N95 mask is really necessary to filter out all those particles. Also if your car has an air filter have a new one on hand to switch out.I hope the wind direction changes soon.
Oh, gosh. I’m thinking of you and your family, and others affected by the fires. Take care!
Stay safe Oakland!
Thinking of you guys, do stay safe!
Be safe, and be well Oakland Fresca!
Good Luck to you & the family!
It must be very worrisome and awful to watch. And back in Napa AGAIN??? It’s terrible.
No perfume unicorns here….but I do have my mini me back from her holiday with her dad! Hooray!
Better than a unicorn 🙂
Good Morning all, my SOTD is Theorema (Esprit d’Ete) by Fendi, my unicorn. I like this better than regular Theorema, it’s not quite as sweet.
I grabbed an espresso and am heading out for my four-mile walk. I saw a view of my backside and can no longer ignore I need to drop some weight.
Oh lord! You are probably fine! But enjoy that walk, regardless!
Oh no, it’s confirmed. I started hormone replacement therapy about six weeks ago. I’ve never been large-brested, I went from two raisins on a washboard to a C cup, I knew something was up! ??
I’ve gained about 15 lbs. Entirely doable to lose the weight, I just have to be more active, reduce evening meals, and no snacks.
My experience has been that some weight from the HRT is water weight, if that helps. I take a different medicine for other reasons that seems to reduce the water weight as a side effect. I’m okay with that side effect.
Thanks! It’s good to know it’s probably just water weight. The doc switched, now I’m on a lower dose, I’m hoping that helps.
I wasn’t accustomed to all that estrogen in my system, boy howdy, I was practically crying at non-stick fry pan commercials…
I’ve had some “ooh, I’m feeling really emotional now” times from hormones — I think a lot of us can relate to that, SmokeyToes! 🙂
I got a pretty good laugh from “two raisins on a washboard”! Thanks!
I know for sure that I have gained inches since March. I need to quit making excuses and just get back into exercising.
Interesting! I blind bought the original and though I like it, it is sweet. Not a criticism but I would be interesting in trying this one as well
The original was nice, perhaps too much of a good thing? The Esprit d’Ete feels more comfortable to wear.
So true! Went kayaking with a friend the other day and she texted me some photos she took- and OMG! I saw myself and thought “Who the he** is the fat woman with the homeless looking messy bun?!” I haven’t had any candy, cookies, cake, ice cream, or sweets since I saw those photos ?
Gorgeous Fendi perfume! I like it much better than the original Theorema.
Dame Minty Man which I am categorizing as a mint gourmand…Fragrantica has no category for it for some reason so I must fill in the blank myself. ? ? ?It is sweet, citrus mint goodness.
In other news, I have extreme work lethargy and only want to peruse online shopping deals or start a new book. I just checked out The Lake House by Kate Morton but haven’t started it yet and think an NSTer made the recommendation. Maybe I need to take a day off to read, shop and drink wine.?
Sounds like a good plan to me! ?
I may join you on a day off like that! So much needed!
Thumbs up to that plan! Do it! 😀
Do it!!
Do eet!
Did you?
I put in for PTO next Thurs and Fri. Have some stuff to finish before the month’s end ? but mentally I have already begun to check out. ?
I was thinking of adding The Lake House to my queue, let me know what you think!
I was thinking of the Virgin River Series, by Robyn Carr. The TV series was fun.
With the Virgin River series, I read a book several books into the series first and was confused, and then started the first one and couldn’t identify. I think that was just me. I didn’t know there was a TV show. But I hope you enjoy the books.
What a name, very catchy.
Very much out of the perfume loop due to anxiety about the move and mom’s health, but I managed to spray on a decant of Dior Rouge Trafalgar.
Oh, sorry the anxiety is continuing. Is your mom dealing with an acute or chronic health issue?
She has Parkinson’s.
Oh geez, I’m sorry to hear that.
It’s tough because I need to be strong for her and not let her see how much I’m hurting. If she thinks her calls are upsetting me, she will stop talking and then she will have no one to confide in, which she needs. So I’m bright and cheery on the phone then sit and cry afterwards.
Oh, so sorry cazaubon, that sounds brutal. But I am sure you are doing the right thing.
Sorry to hear you are going thru a tough time now. Wishing the best to you and your mom! ?
Thank you so much. It is so hard to see her suffer.
I’m so sorry to hear about your mom, I’m wishing you and her the best. My uncle has Parkinson’s, it can be so isolating. She’s fortunate to have you to lean on.
((HUGS)) to you both.
Thank you and hugs to you too. The pandemic has been very hard for her by increasing the isolation.
That sounds tough. Wishing you some joy.
Thank you ka_rina, it is hard.
*Hugs* I hope the move goes well for you, and I join the folks above in wishing you and your mother the best.
Thank you, I really appreciate the hugs.
So much to deal with. Hoping the move goes well and the best wishes to your mom.
Thank you lillyjo.
This is so tough. Wishing your mom well and you for strength!
Thank you hajusuuri.
Wow. That is a lot to be dealing with, period. Hugs.
I appreciate the hugs, thank you.
I’m sorry to hear about your mom. That is very tough. Wishing you extra strength. Will you still split your time w/ SD but relocate in Canada then?
Thank you She-ra. We will still be splitting our time between San Diego and British Columbia. It will increase the visits because we will be passing thru SF each time and it’s close enough to take a week and go for extra visits.
This is so touching Cazaubon.
I can only imagine how hard it must be. I have been reading up
on Linda Rondstat recently, who also suffers from it also.
So glad that she has you.
Sending you strength.
I saw the documentary about Linda, love her music and was also very touched by her story, highly recommend it. Thanks for your kind message.
Thursday!
1) Non unicorn: am in Molinard Jasmin- it was affordable when being sold at Anthropologie; it is still easy to find and buy now!
2) Went walking along NW 23rd when I heard my favorite store to wish in, Manor, was open. Along the way, I came across a pop sale and was able to score Ortigia Ambra Nera in both bath oil and room essence for $28!
3) In fact, I went kinda nuts with room scent while on 23rd: An Aerin Lauren Candle (even on sale, it was pricey) and a bunch of Crabtree & Evelyn candles. All of my money, going up in smoke!
Ortigia seems to fly below the radar. I just put on a dab of Mandorla, despite wearing three perfumes already…
I see what you did there! Is 23rd still boutiquey with food places every so often?
Late to this- am doing a project for a friend!
And yes, NW 23rd is very trendy, very boutique-y, even now. We still have tourists (!) who are here and they are shopping!
Mohur extrait de parfum because Hajusuuri reminded me of this beauty yesterday.
You smell nice!
No unicorn for me, and the sole unicorn I finally got is some ancient Shiseido Zen EDV, but it’s not right in the heat. The other is a used bottle of MKK, which is a pure winter scent. So I wore some refreshing Camelia Chinois for work and now Sel Marin after a shower at home.
I finally pulled the trigger on a big BUB of Aromatics Elixir for cheap, before reformulation hits again. And while I was at it I also bought Halston Cataclyst als a blind buy. And Perles de Lalique for a whopping 24€, so it’s almost free…. I will have a bit to confess to Donatella next time.
Sounds like a fun shopping spree! Donatella will be impressed.
I never hear anyone mention Catalyst. What’s it like?
I will find out soon and will report back
For anyone who was wondering, my covid test was negative. I knew it was not likely, but despite that had already planned all the things I would do if I had partial immunity! Oh well.
Praise Jesus. My family has been touched by this (all recoveries) and this is no joke.
Oh, I do know it is no joke and did not mean to make light of it. I just already knew I had something probably viral and that whatever it was, it was mild, so was hoping it was covid and then I could do things I am afraid to do now.
Sorry if I offended you Ede97005!
I have had a few friends who have had Covid, all are fine, only 1 case was dangerous (an 80 yr old,
hydroxycloriquin saved
him) and I did the antigen test months ago confident that I’d had it. (A – result but I feel all my antibodies had perished by then) I hope you did have a mild case and can check the box. I subscribe to the ‘get it later if at all possible’ theory as the host of new drug treatments is full of so much promise.
It sounds like you are really healthy anyway and that’s the best launch point.
Never offense- only concern, and gratitude that you are fine.
Thanks, that is kind.
That is good news. I’m with Ede on this one. It’s a nasty illness.
No matter what the result was, I am glad you are feeling good now, Robin!
I’m glad it’s negative as well. Post infection immunity still has a lot of variables, and people may not be as “safe” as they think.
Both glad and sad to hear the results! It’s always a little of column A, a little of column B right?
I had some friends that just got a day of headaches and cough, and others that wound up with pneumonia in the hospital.
Certainly a *very gentle* brush with COVID would have been freeing in certain ways but most importantly, whatever it was you are on the mend!
So glad to hear it! I keep hearing about lingering damage that can occur, even in mild cases.
But at least you are feeling better – hooray to that!
Thanks all!
Glad you are feeling better!
I’m so glad.
Great news Robin?
I’m glad you tested negative, and I’m glad you’re feeling better. 🙂
I am rather happy that your test came back negative Robin. Hugs!
I’m sorry you were so sick, I’m glad it’s not Covid-19.
Several friends had it, two with pneumonia, and were hospitalized; my cousin’s husband, a surgeon, was hospitalized in an ICU. This Covid isn’t messing around.
Glad you’re better. Now I’m curious what things you were hoping to be able to do. Earlier on when there were more articles in the NYT on how to stay safer, one mentioned choosing activities that would expose you to fewer people but doing many of these activities bit the exposure accumulates as if you actually participated in a riskier activity.
Because my husband is high risk, we are being extra careful, probably much more so than most people. I have not been in a grocery store, or eaten at a restaurant — even outside — since this started. I saw my mom once, briefly. I figured if I had even partial immunity, I would go grocery shopping again (suitably masked, of course). I might drive to Portland to see my stepmother, who I have not seen since my dad died. (I have not gone simply because I cannot fly, and I have no safe way to go to the bathroom on the long drive.) I could go spend a week in my sister’s lake house, which is sitting empty, and go kayaking & paddleboarding (have not gone for same reason I have not been to Portland).
I am kind of sorry they did the test so quickly because I was having fun thinking of all the great things I could do if I got a terribly mild case and got better quickly 🙂
Glad you feel better, despite not getting the immunity you were hoping for.
Wow, this is a lot of a lot! And here I am compliant but still feeling incredulous of a sea of mask-wearing shoppers and thinking this is normal but it’s not … and you practically have not left your home without doing a very deliberate assessment of risk!
Happy to hear and that you’re feeling better.
Goodness me, I remember that I *have* captured a unicorn! It’s Shalimar Eau Légère, which I bought for a reasonable price unsniffed, and it has turned out to be the wearable Shalimar for me. It’s under my (made-up) category Gauzy Oriental, of which The Different Company’s Oriental Lounge is the only other member I can think of.
Oh nice, that was the best of that series.
SotD = Cologne du 68
I’m sitting here avoiding my to-do list, la la la, at my own peril of course. I have outdoor chores to do, and it’s just gonna get hotter, phew.
In random Netflix news, I landed on Glee last night. Watched the first two episodes and thought “fun!” and “high school is awful”.
In silly I-can’t-read nonsense, I thought Robin announced that today is national MOJITO day.
Cheers, friends! 😀
We can still assume is Mojito day! Let’s have one! ?
I’m down for that! In fact, let’s have TWO! ?
?
double up the mojitos?! awesome 😀 😀
yes, please! 😀 😀
I love Cd68, you are a spicy delight!
thank you, Catanosmia! 😀 I think Cdu68 is an overlooked gem of a perfume, and it’s a little bit of a unicorn for me. I decided I wanted a bottle after it was discontinued, then not too long after that a single bottle popped up for sale (and rather inexpensively) at an online discounter.
And I thought it was really just ok, bought a bottle anyway, and turned out to really like it more and more the longer I wore it.
I’ll go for a margarita. A few weeks ago, I got a bottle of Powell & Mahoney Craft Cocktail Skinny Margarita cocktail mixer (sweetened by cane sugar and agave syrup), surprisingly only 50 calories for 4 oz! Tequila is 4 teaspoons from a cheapie tiny bottle.
“Mojito Day” sounds much more appealing than “Mosquito Day”!
Seriously.
In Fazzolari’s Au Dela, from the swapmeet. I appreciate the beauty, but I’m not sure it’s very much me. Must start work – after a summer of being told “your job is cooked”, I will be teaching again after all, and I’m stuck on the first week of classes, trying to figure out clever ways for community building and such on Zoom. It’s helpful to have a high school age child (I teach first year college students), who will shut down many of my ideas (“nobody wants to do another flipgrid!” etc.).
very glad you will be back to work! 😀 and “HA!” about flipgrid. Yesterday I went to a class about Pear Deck for google slides, all I could think was “kids are probably so tired of looking at Pear Deck slides.”
Yes, I’m trying to be mindful that we might all be doing the same types of things since we’re all attending the same workshops etc. – “hey guys, let’s play two truths and a lie!” (although I will probably do that one).
Well, that sounds like good news! How many students?
2 sections, app. 25 each, so I”ll be teaching two classes and taking two classes (I was planning on taking three classes but I don’t want to make myself stressed out right off the bat).
Best of luck to you!
Good luck with those classes! ???
Good afternoon!
I got my package from C.O. Bigelow yesterday. Enabler pin to Robin. 🙂 I stuck to mostly the lemon-scented items, because I knew what those would smell like. I tried the lemon shampoo and conditioner last night. I like those.
Today I tried to open the little tin of rose salve. I don’t know what I was doing wrong, but after using many tools, including a wrench, I ended up using a bottle opener to open the tin. The salve seems nice, but that was a lot of effort.
The orange blossom soap smelled strong to me. I’m guessing it will be too strong to use it while Mom’s in the house. I was curious to see what that soap would smell like.
I got the C.O. Bigelow lemon liquid soap. I know what that smells like. I’ll use it in the kitchen when we run out of the citrus liquid soap we have by the sink now. There seem to still be some shortages of liquid soap in stores and online.
Morning tea for the last few days has been P.G. Tips, the iced version.
I’m glad the weather yesterday was cooler than it has been, and that it looks like a pretty nice day today. I’ll at least go outside enough to work on weeding my plants. I mentioned Longwood Gardens to Mom, and she said, “But there are baseball games!”
LOL about the baseball games! Glad the package was mostly successful!
The array of samples was interesting. There were a couple of little tubes of cinnamon-mint toothpaste, which I’ll try at some point. There’s a little bottle of Aqua Mollis(?) body wash that’s very nice, and a little container of aftershave.
Mom seems to feel that life is a little closer to back to normal for her when she can sit and watch a baseball game. I guess it gives her something else to think about.
I got out in the yard this afternoon and weeded around my little knee-high magnolia grandiflora sapling and planted the bulbs of the potted hyacinths I got in the early spring. I did some other pruning and planting. I felt good about what I got done.
Since you like lemon, I figured I’d pass along a recommendation to you: try Bliss’ Lemon and Sage Body Butter. I’ve been using a it this month on my shins as a light summer moisturizer.
Sigh. Typo. “… using it…”
What a fun package!
SOTD = L’Occitane Immortelle de Corse
Most definitely a captured unicorn! After months and months of searching in the U.S., I found it at a ship in Brussels!

In other news, I participated in a Sniffapalooza x Atelier Cologne x Nordstrom Master Class. I already own a good number of the AC fragrances and I thought it would be fun to do a Zoom event with other perfume enthusiasts. It included a lot of samples and other goodies and special deals on purchases. In any case, do take a look at my IG post because I am giving away FREEBIE all the samples that came in the pack. I opened 2/3 of them and dabbed the fragrances on blotters; the glassine envelopes are marked with a check mark on the upper right of the side that has a sticker with the perfume name. I will mail this freebie to anyone in the U.S. who have smelled fewer than 5 Atelier Colognes AND have posted at least one comment in a SOTD thread in August 2020 before the time stamp on this comment. You know I can’t check this but I would have a skeptical if I get a dibs from some of you ?. First person to dibs under this comment gets it.

I was there with you!
Yes you were! I decided to be incognito ?
I really want to do one of these events – there seemed to be many offered at the beginning of the shutdown, and I missed all of them. I’m keeping my eye out and I’m on a bunch of mailing lists! I love the look and design of Atelier, but the scents never seem to work for me. Still, sounds like fun!
They’re certainly fun. The Zoom ones are more interactive because most of the time, participants can communicate via audio and / or sending comments to the group.
One day! There was one in Grasse that sounded good but it sold out quickly.
That’s quite a sample pack!
It is! I didn’t quite expect the number of samples nor that denim perfume holder. All for a registration fee of $12.50!
I remember your hunt for the Immortelle de Corse! That was quite the story.
Great unicorn.
I’m in Buly 1803 Nymph with Scorpion from the Louvre collection. They did
8 scents inspired by 8 works of art in collaboration with the louvre. My husband gifted me the minis of the collection and we had some fun trying to blind smell the perfumes and guess the art work.
No credit points though… I don’t think I have any ???, precious decants, discontinued marvels or vintage versions.
Last day of les vacances tomorrow…
Your Sotd seems pretty cool. I say it qualifies for points!?
Tomorrow’s my last day of work before retirement. Feels like an afterthought at the moment — the cat and I evacuated due to wildfires, we are staying with friends now while husband works the fires. So far the fires have not approached our community but they are not that far away. Hoping the wind doesn’t shift. Hoping even more that out-of-state resources arrive soon.
No SOTD since I left without any perfume. Hoping I can go home to my perfume collection someday in the not too distant future.
Lots of hoping going on here!
Fingers crossed pixel and wishing you will see your perfume collection again very soon. Hope you and your family are able to stay safe.
Stay safe!
Hoping for you! Stay safe!
Oh Pixel, I am hoping that your house and husband are safe during the fires. Any rain in the forecast?
On a brighter note, if your retirement is as gloriously wonderful as mine, you will be blissful most of the time. No more meetings, bureaucracy, office politics, unreasonable demands, or crazy co-workers. it’s like you’re paid to be happy!
I was just on the CalFire map and wow! Sad situation! I hope you’re able to get back to a healthy hubby and an undamaged house soon.
What Deva said, and others here. I’ll be thinking of you and your family.
Oh no! Not only is this scary but sad to have to lose the ceremony of an exit.
Amazing post: you and your family are surely very brave!
I hope you and your husband stay safe!
Oh wow, it should be a celebration day, but instead… I am thinking of you and hoping as well that the fires abate, everyone remains safe and you are soon home with your perfumes.
I’m so sorry to hear that – I hope you both stay safe and sound and that you get to return to your intact home very soon!
Yikes, stay safe pixel!
Thanks everyone. It’s a strange day, strange week, that’s for sure. I appreciate the support.
Posting really late Pixel, but adding my well wishes for you, your hubby, and your house! Be safe!
Big hugs and stay safe.
Wow, that does make the last day of work seem less momentous. Thinking of you both!
Happy retirement and lots of stay safe vibes!!
SotD is my Heracléa which is definitely a unicorn, both discontinued and from a tiny Tunisian house – but use it or lose it, right? So I sprayed generously!
My outdoor show today was just cancelled – but I’ve never been more grateful.
The performer organizing it woke up this morning feeling awful and incredibly weak, I asked her if she had a fever but she wasn’t sure ?
The other two of us managed to convince her that now is NOT the time to push aside health concerns for a community show we can easily postpone til she feels better.
Which was a nice way of saying “You need to stay safe but also we don’t want to get near you! Stay home, rest, and then see if you need a COVID test!!!!”
I hope you did not get close to her but wishing her well!
Oh no this convo was ALL through text, thankfully! She messaged me 15 minutes before I needed to leave the house to take transit to meet up with her, whew!
She felt bad for canceling but it was 110% the right decision and if all is well we’ll make up the performance on Tuesday; if not, obviously we’ll be way more concerned with her feeling better than with if/when we do the show!
Sorry to hear that your performance was canceled, but it definitely sounds like it was for the best. Glad to hear that all the people involved are looking out for each other. ?
Good, hope it will be rescheduled when everyone is well.
Not in a unicorn, just L’Laime by Lolita Lempicka on this smoky day. I have today & tomorrow off but my hospital is sending out messages asking for us to pick up shifts. We’re over-full already, but the fires have forced other hospitals in the area to send us some of their patients as they evacuate. This year is just non-stop and exhausting.
Thank you for the work that you do and I hope we’ll have some miracle rain soon…
It is exhausting and infuriating. I’m not in any rush to start back to work, either. 8 months into this and we still don’t have appropriate PPE. And these hospitals just don’t care. I find it infuriating that I have to beg and wheedle for an N95 or just to change out of a soiled surgical mask. Now I understand the saying, “beg, borrow, and steal!”
I’m so sorry, wishing you strength!
It’s been extra busy at work, so even less time to keep up with all you lovely people and your perfumes.
The first flowers are out on the magnolia next door, so that calls for a spring perfume. I’ll be wearing Chamade today.
You smell wonderful – I just recently got to know Chamade, and it was an instant love.
Hopefully you are able to enjoy your own perfumes!
Sotd is Allure edp. I’m working with my son today. He’s very excited to get his first ever paycheck tomorrow!
Contratulations to young lillyjo! AND you smell wonderful – Allure edp seems to be one of those “me” scents that, if I had read the notes, I might have passed it by. But when I wore it, it just gave me a wonderful bubble of scent all day.
When it first came out, it gave me a terrible headache. My bottle is about 5 years old and I love it now. I’m assuming reformulation, but it’s still great.
Congrats to him! Nothing like earning and spending (or saving!) your own ?
Let’s hope for saving. Although I told him he needs to start paying his own phone bill.
Yay for your son!
?
Huzzah for your son getting his first paycheck! That’s got to be so exciting for you both!
Woo hoo to you and your son!
Yay that is exciting! I wonder what people who aren’t into perfume do with their money.?? Kind of joking…kind of not.
How exciting! I remember my first paycheck, earning the princely sum of $3.85 an hour.
Tried another “Ewww” today from Heretic, Dirty Lemon. This house is just not working for me. Tomorrow’s possible unicorns are Amouage Homage or Tribute attars, Theorema, original Slumberhouse Norne, MKK, La Nuit parfum, Shalimar Mexique, or vintage Tatiana. I’m leaning toward Tatiana, but I’ll wait to see what the weather is like. I might be able to wear one of the heavier ones if it is cooler than today.
My package that was sent from CA to OR and back to CA is coming back to OR now. Sheesh!
I kinda like Heretic from what I have smelled, though I will pass still on the Paltrow candle lol.
SOTD is, flex fingers: La Petite Robe Noire Black Perfecto eau de toilette florale. The tea note is not my favorite part but mainly I smell roses and cherry and almond in good quality. I like the bottle better than the first BP. Since it’s opaque, I feel I can display it from time to time. It has lasted almost eight hours, too!
Wow, that’s a LONG name!
Another late post today. I had some errands to do this afternoon, and it was a pleasure to get out in today’s gorgeous weather!
SOTD = Olivier Durbano Rock Crystal EdP. This is hard to find, and expen$ive to boot, so it might qualify for Unicorn status.
Is this the uh, confession? It was so nice out I extended my walk an extra mile from my new goal. New goal is try for 4 miles 3x a week!
Nope! The confession will be something that might surprise a few folks.
Tomorrow is also supposed to be pretty darn nice! I will enjoy it a lot, b/c our weekend weather is looking kinda yucky.
I will find out soon and will report back
