Lazy weekend poll ~ Haiku challenge 2020!

Posted by Robin on 9 May 2020 535 Comments

Today, our eleventh annual Haiku Challenge (if you like, you can check out past years for inspiration). We're also happy to include other forms of poetry if haiku don't inspire you. Have a perfume-related limerick or a sonnet you'd like to share? Please do.

If you're writing a haiku, pick a perfume or a perfume house (or really, anything related to perfume), and write a haiku about it. OR, skip the perfume theme altogether, and write a (non-political, please!) haiku about the COVID-19 pandemic.

Either way, use the simplified English form — your haiku should have three lines, the first line with five syllables, the second line with seven syllables and the third line with five syllables. You can put the perfume name in the title if that makes it easier, and at any rate, don’t stress over the rules of traditional haiku — this is just for fun.

Thanks to you Robin LOL ?
      I consider it a mother’s day gift
My bathroom still smells of it. I highly recommend it

And Calypso gets an enabler pin because I got the two new St Clair Scents releases. Diane tells me that she thinks the narcissus one is her best creation yet. I am so excited to try them both!!!!!!!

I love Vitabath gelee! Have you tried Badedas? Another refreshing green shower gel. It has a distinctive herbal/woody note.

So of course I had to go look and then ask my mom. We did indeed have Badedas in the house!! It may even have come before the Vitabath!! The scent description online sounds amazing…. patchouli is in it!! Might be my next shower gel purchase. Right now I am toggling between the Vitabath and Paris Deauville Shampoo and body wash ( a birthday gift from a dear friend).

            How cool is that!
I used it when I lived in Fl – it was perfect and refreshing.
I purchased it online at Smallflower Apothecary, the link is here.

I pulled the trigger on Badedas shower gel, some soaps, and the German Nivea hand cream in the tin.
I will be showering in style! And I adore the fragrance of the Nivea hand cream.

I forget, did you buy any of the scents other than the original green? And if so, how were they? (Also curious about the scents of the hand sanitizers if you’re not annoyed by so many questions.)

I only bought the original green gelee ( but was sorely tempted by the others- next time!).
The hand sanitizers definitely smell of alcohol ( not complaining ?) but the drydown on the lavender chamomile smells like coconut to me. And they are large!! 16 oz.

Also bought soap…the raspberry vanilla is yummy…and also very large!!

Good price on everything and with the 20 percent off even better!!

The smell is outrageously good. Reminds me a bit of Wrappings. You should get some for nostalgic sake. It’s also incredibly moisturizing and a little goes a long way with a puff sponge

    The mask says it all
    Stress, worry, fear for others
    Love for all mankind.

Feeling kind of deep this morning! Wearing Zoologist Bee for sheer delight, I’m wondering how long it will take for my travel bottle to arrive. Only about one wear left in my sample.
Here’s another haiku on aging I found online that I thought was relatable and funny:

    I am so tired
Where did all my money go
    My back is hurting

    Happy weekend everyone ??

I decided to write some haikus on perfumes which transport me to another place. Many of us have to stay home, some had to cancel vacations, but we can still travel using our perfumes and imagination, right? :)

    Avignon
    Glorious incense –
With this scent you can stay home
    And be in a church

    Ormonde Jayne Woman
    Mystical forest
With tall grass and dark shadows
    Sun shines through the trees

    La Haie Fleurie
    A summer garden
In full bloom, bathed in sunlight
    Jasmine reigns supreme

    En Passant
    Green, wet and fragrant
Lilac bush blooms after the rain
    Spring is in the air

I want to thank the kind commenter who mentioned Sarah Lohman’s class on Animal Extracts and Floral Flavors, which I took on Thursday.

Sarah approaches what we focus on here as perfume ingredients from the perspective of food flavorings. Historically, deer musk, castoreum, civet, and ambergris were used to flavor roasts, confections, and other dishes. Fragrant sharbats are still enjoyed in Iran.

Sarah is delightful, and the course was excellent. You can find out more about her book and upcoming courses on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

You’re just redirecting what you otherwise would have spent on gasoline money. Besides, the new perfumath rule is that if you get it on some kind of a discount, technically, you haven’t really bought anything that would count as a violation of a no buy (which, for you, I think only applies to perfume / perfumes products, otherwise, you would be in BEEG TROUBLE).

    On lockdown with a
    Perfume-hater: Tiny dabs
    of Lush keep me sane.

I’m not actually in danger of losing my mind but I have an even dozen Lush solids that are a good compromise between nothing and full-on assault. They’re very…compact I guess is the best word, not only for their size but for their near-complete lack of projection. They stay very close to the skin and annoy nobody (at least nobody in my general vicinity, which is to say one person), but I get to enjoy them by jamming my nose up to my hand. I’ve been wearing them a lot in the last seven weeks. Right now it’s Lust (so so good, actually my favourite jasmine).

I always think of you and my middle Marzipan when you mention VI. You should seriously consider the 200 ml bottle which comes with a free travel spray of any fragrance of your choice and a free engraved leather pouch with free shipping and 20 percent off until May 11 code Family20 ( hajusuuri told us…..and almost got an enabler pin from me because the 200 ml of Orange Sanguine and 30 ml of VI was sitting in a cart with $47 discount but I didn’t pull the trigger…..now that purchase I WOULD have had to report to Donatella!!!)

I adored it. But it’s been ages since I sniffed it. Something about the older Lauders. They were so gorgeous. Aliage is another beautiful one. I wore that in the 1970s.

I bought the annual pass, which was half price for people in several western NC counties. The grounds opened this morning. The shops and buildings remain closed. Imagine my surprise when they refused me entrance this morning! Apparently, although not clearly indicated on the website, one has to make a reservation first, just ambling around the grounds, and not the house tours, as one would imagine. Also not mentioned on the website, they are only allowing a “limited number” of entrances to access the lawn and gardens. Also not mentioned on the website is the fact they are “fully booked” throughout the month. In my mind, it’s classic bait and switch. I asked for a refund and got one. Bad business and complete lack of clarity on the website. I won’t be going back. Ever. ??

Yes, I’m a big fan of the arboretum. I used to go there and to Bent Creek all the time to hike and bike. I headed that way after the Biltmore fail, but all the parking lots are barricaded, so people were just parking on the verge along the road. Absolutely packed! I’ll try again on a week day. Thanks for the suggestion ?

Sending positive vibes for the weekend to all of you in the lockdown or not.

Went for a 35km bike ride, gosh, that cleared my mind so well and helped me de-stress.

    Now, on to some haiku

    WINTER PALACE (Memo)
    Hot and cold at once
Rooibos is my cup of tea
    Invite the dragon

    L’IVREE BLEUE (Ormaie)
    Citrus drunk on rum
Digging gold from deep dark mine
    Iris is there too!

    LES BRUMES (Ormaie)
    Mist above my head
    Inhaling this juicy cheer
    Mood of Cote d’Azur

    EAU CAPITALE (Diptyque)
    A bit retro yes
    Potpourri type of rose scent
    Not sure if I buy

And Sotd is Van Cleef & Arpels California Reverie

Commando so far, but have big plans to go out to the south 40 and do damage to the plethora of weeds out there (so scent will be Eau de Yardwork layered with Essence of Dirt). After that I will be comparing OJ Man side-by-side with OJ Elixir, kindly provided by an awesome NSTer. Have to find some hair clips somewhere – today is the date of the second haircut appointment I didn’t get to have because of the lockdown. Trimming my own bangs only gets me so far – the rest of the hairs were cut in a layered bob and they’re not quite long enough yet to stay in a ponytail. First-world problems. ✂️

I’m about ready to cut mine again. Bangs are no biggie, but I did some research on the shears I used on the length, and they are thinning shears! They’re supposed to be dragged down the length of a lock of hair to thin the bulk. No wonder I felt like I was sawing through my hair. Duh. ?

My attempts at a COVID-19 haiku:

    Rose’ with breakfast?
    Why not? It’s a pandemic.
    Pretend I’m at brunch.

I’m starting the family community project early, because I have more than a week’s worth of perfumes that fit in my made up family “perfumes that are supposed to smell like California”. Today’s entry: Oliver Peoples by Byredo, which is inspired by Los Angeles.

Happy Mother’s Day to the many mothers and mother figures on here! I hope you get the best celebration possible in the circumstances!

*Hugs* to those who have lost their mothers. I know Mom thinks a lot about Nana A. on Mother’s Day, and those folks here who have lost their mothers, especially in the last few years, have commented about feeling that way, too.

For those families who aren’t able to get together in person, I’m sure your family members are sending love from a distance. My brother will call Mom this afternoon or evening. Mom misses seeing him, but she knows he loves her.

I am wearing Eau Premiere…the original 2015 as I have been debating swapping it away b/c I just don’t reach for it much. Today it is reminding me of Ostara today which I also think I swapped away.?

I shall be listing my 5 oz. tester bottle in the Swapmeet next if anyone is interested…I have to doublecheck but think it’s at least 2/3 full.

    I love my baking

    Okay, it’s meh

I’m in OJ Woman today. It’s cooler outside, 62 degrees when I got up. Walked the Wild One, and nodded to an older lady who was walking towards me. As she passed, I turned and looked for some reason, because she always walks with her left hand behind her back. She was holding a rosary. Praying while walking, keeping the faith. ❤️

Winter has returned, but I’m resisting. Wearing fruity lotion and Guerlain Nuit d’Amour, which also smells fruity. Will have to bundle up and take the dog out at some point. I think I’ll console myself with pancakes for supper, and copious amounts of maple syrup from a local producer.

    L’air de Rien (Miller Harris)

    This lockdown
    is sweetened by
    a cloud of stink
    I am homed more
    by this musk
    than I could be
    by a dozen laws
    -unmade bed it is
    unbrushed hair –
    scoffing at sanitiser,
    insouciant,
    what pathogen could penetrate
    such love.

    Crushed under the feet
    Of the mighty elephant
    Flowers and fig leaves

My scent of the day is Zoologist Elephant. I am still looking for ‘my’ fig perfume.. Tested Premier Figuier, which was too dry and gone in seconds. Fico d’ India is nice, but a bit too fruity. Berdoues Figue Blanche is nice and sweet, Ninfeo Mio has a big too much citrus…. I am still searching. The Elephant is quite nice, but the price is not.

This makes me want to test Elephant again! I like Philosykos edt the most. I find some of the greener fig fragrances too astringent. Imaginary Authors have a scent called Yesterday Haze that also has a lovely fig note that is very discernible, but not dominant.

About an hour after posting yesterday that I had three loads of laundry to do, I laid down for a two-hour (!) nap. I set an alarm for 45 minutes, turned it off and only got up when my husband woke me. Rightly concerned I would be up all night. I wasn’t. Slept fine. Sweet.

So..the three loads went in at 8:30 this morning. My husband a three-hour Zoom class, so I settled in with earbuds to watch the Met Opera offering of the 1977 performance of La Bohème starring Pavarotti and Scotto. (It’s still available until this evening at 6pm ET.). What a treat! I also got some good knitting in.

And decided Angel Muse suited the cold-day nesting.

Here are my two (pathetic) COVID haikus:

    Agnes standing close
    Loudly meows in my face
    Won’t you pet me now?

    Soft kitty, loud purrs
    Cuddles up, grows impatient
    Sharply swats my hand

    Hello fragrant friends,

I have not hardly posted but have been reading along over the past weeks. Just not enough energy. I have Covid ennui.

Have hardly worn any fragrance these past weeks.

But I love haiku day and so far everyone has done so well…they are lovely.

My sister is np on frontlines, plastic face shield and all, and we had a bit of worry about her and she tested but didn’t have Covid – 19, so she is back to testing others two days a week along with her nurse practice.

This is year three for us without our mother and again I remain grateful she and my dad are not here for this. To each of you who have also remarked on parents, I understand.

I have my job, my home, my health and am grateful. I have about 15 sprays of Indochine on and might treat myself to a backup bottle today since it is my birthday!!

Was hoping Luckyscent would have a coupon for Mothers’ Day but no such luck.

We are soooooooooooooo glad we went to Africa last summer or there would be much lamenting going on.

Cuir d’Ange today (err, this morning), which is lovely as an occasional experience, but so ephemeral I couldn’t FB at that price. Review on Kafkaesque describes it perfectly. Am revisiting samples before doing leather for the CP next week.

Sampled Memo Russian Leather last night. Memo gets a lot of love, but several of the leathers I’ve tested thus far have just not done it for me. Well—Russian Leather brought on such an unexpected, strong scent memory of my grandfather, I cried.

Wish I knew what he actually wore. It certainly wasn’t Memo; he’s been gone nearly 10 years. I remember he had several bottles of scent in his bathroom, but that was before I cared about such things so no idea what those bottles contained.

Hugs and comfort to everyone who is missing their Moms.

Oooh, you smell lovely. Cuir d’Ange is a beauty.

It’s shocking how hard a scent memory can hit, isn’t it? Tauer’s Carillion pour une ange made me burst into tears as soon as I sprayed it. I had to pass my sample on to a friend because it was too much.

Scents are amazing like that. I had a grandpa memory when I tried Les Nereides Opoponax. He must have worn something with a lot of sweet myrrh, but I don’t know what. I still have the sample but I can’t wear it much, because it makes me wish I knew him better.
I also get that about my grandmother when I wear Chamade. I didn’t think they were the kind of people to spend a lot of money on sometjing like perfume. But they also went through WWII as young people, so… ? unfortunately they have both passed away and neither wanted to talk much about war time. My grandfather enlisted when he was 17, and my grandmother became a nurse, I have a couple of her textbooks from her training, and later she helped found a clinic in Madison WI. Then they started having babies and that was the end of that for her. My grandfather was a fireman after the war.

I received, after a nerve-wracking wait, some decants including Montale’s Intense Cafe. A local perfume pal described it as a rose latte, which was very apt.

This morning, I went full out for brunch-at-home: eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, a mimosa — and a rose latte! In short, I threw in a spoonful of rose water, for a latte with a difference.

    Yeast, flour, and salt
The oven fills the house with
    Pandemic fragrance

Commando today til I finished an epic bakeathon. About to run upstairs shortly to put on some Rodin Bis.

    Green, oily, herbal
    A sudden trail of flowers
    Emerges from fur

Yesterday was goat cheese and red pepper eggplant moussaka. Today sourdough, the last of my candied ginger and chocolate chip cookie dough, and a bechamel pizza with spinach, mushrooms, bacon and garlic-marinated roast chicken. Totally pooped.

I would say I am done cooking for at least a few days, but Mr. Teebear asked so hopefully “you know what that means?” when the last ¼ of this week’s sourdough was starting to harden this morning that I caved and said I would make bread pudding. But not tonight!!!!!

Costume Nationale 21 layered over Debaser for a figgy woody pudding.
Still clinging to autumn, still golden and yesterday the wonderful, unexpected combination of mulchy autumn leaves with afternoon sun-heated roses. Perfect balance of deep, sweet rose and and sweet decaying oak and birch leaves. I wish I could have bottled it, just wonderful.
I have been fascinated by the swarm of honey bees that feeds from the sugar water I put out for the birds. There are a lot of them but seem pretty mellow and the birds still manage to negotiate the bee cloud to feed. Each bird takes it in turn ( the feeder is placed in a tree growing in a pot plant) and after each one drinks it rests, sings, then flies off and the next bird moves in. The tui are the dominant , bigger birds and the mossy green bellbirds the more delicate. An incredible display of careful social distancing, orchestration and calm. The bees all drink from the bowl with their bottoms up in the air, like bunnies.
    Happy weekend! Love the Hokusai.

The other very interesting (Iknow, I know….but think of Bee perfume connection if this is boring) thing is that when you watch the bees feeding they tend to drink a lot and then when they start to fly they ‘squirt’ clear liquid from their bottoms…a real perfume squirt ( not a dribble). I hadn’t seen this before I became fixated on the feeder and the swarm. The liquid is pretty much pure water…now why is that?

No. They don’t urinate. This is to get rid of excess water from their small bodies…they want to keep the energy ( sugar) from nectar but not waste energy carrying excess weight ( the water content in nectar)…something like that?!

The Australian bell bird is wonderful – but most Australian birds are wonderful – such amazing variety! The NZ Bellbird is different from the Australian … this is a clip so you can hear it. The three that feed from my sugar water have beautiful moss-green plummage with a touch of yellow on the wing and a real smoky eye.

Despite my short commute down the hall to work, I’m still not keeping up with NST over breakfast. I must have lamented this quite often – my tablet offered me most of the words for that sentence.
I seem to be getting the tablet quite well trained on perfume. Every time I go to write something, the first words it offers are “Guerlain” and “Serge Lutens”. :)
I’m trying a few samples today and am quite enjoying Oriza L Legrand’s Oeillet Louis XV. It’s quite sweet, I’m a bit surprised at how much I’m enjoying it.

Update, when the alcohol wears off the Vitabath hand sanitizer does smell of spearmint. The lavender one still smells coconutty to me. Highly recommend both cause there’s no Purell to be found and it’s a lot cheaper than what some perfume companies are charging for theirs.

Going with Samsara in the hair and Brit on the wrists again.

No haiku from me today. I had a very relaxing day yesterday and hope for more of the same today, though it’s cooler and raining.

Yesterday, I sat outside under a Sycomore tree. On and off, one of the kids or my husband would come sit with me. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky, just this dazzling blue expanse, the sun friendly and bright. The leaves were fluttering in the wind, and I just sat for a long time watching, wafting the last drops of Ormonde Jayne Woman (many thanks for missionista who is sending me more!). This moment, with the sun and breeze, is captured so perfectly by this perfume. I know others find it haunting, but it smells like love and sunshine and earth to me.

For all the pain and suffering COVID is bringing, it’s also brought a lot of Slowness (in the best of ways) to my life. I’m very thankful.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms. And to those of us missing our moms.

I’m wearing Avon Bird of Paradise in honor of my mom. One of her favorites. I bought a bottle for her on eBay some years back, and she was thrilled. It’s a really nice, if a bit fleeting, scent.

Had a delicious dinner last night from the local Irish pub/restaurant that recently reopened for carry out. I had their shepherd’s pie and the husband had chicken pot pie. Yum!

Gloomy and rainy here today. It’s ok though, helps me feel less guilty for still sitting on the couch. Eventually I will get up and go to the cemetery to visit my mom. My mother’s favorite flowers were daisies. Once I asked her why, and she said because they were the cheapest and you could always get them, lol.
Lot’s of love to everyone missing their mom’s today (really, everyday)

Still no haiku ideas for me – although I’ve loved reading all of your haikus, the only “poetry” I can ever remember is Ogden Nash, I’m afraid. Broke down and ordered a bottle of Dryad yesterday, along with another tube of Mediterraneo hand cream. SOTM is, of course, Dryad from my near-emptied sample vial.

Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers!

    Sunday Haiku

    O, Guerlain, your old
    perfumes are brilliant; the new?
    Stop with the white musk

    maybe a bit clumsy

It’s half-rain-half-snow outside. There should be a word for that. It’s not sleet, that’s ice pellets. this is raindrops and snowflakes, it’s kinda weird.

    Cheers!

Huh. I didn’t think I had a haiku in me, but my morning fume experience proved me wrong:

    Chypre Palatin
Got a sample. Why, you fool?
    Pocketbook says no.

Just reading in bed and enjoying my coffee. Morning was a little gloomy but I think it will burn off. We’ll be having a Mother’s Day “linner” in the garden, social distanced, just 5 of us total (3 households).

Won’t see my Mom until next weekend though as she’s working today (nurse—thankfully her hospital is the least COVID affected among all the hospitals in her California hospital network… as she is 64 I definitely worry).

I’m trying MDCI Invasion Barbare and am interested though I don’t really like it. There’s something unsettling about the notes combination (spices, lavender, citrus, woods, violet). I’m getting interested in distinguishing violet notes in scents. Any recommendations?
I’ve been distracted lately by various things. I’ve taken in a guest cat for the summer who belongs to a student who has had to leave town for family and Covid-related reasons. He is still scared but coming around. He is all black with the softest and shiniest fur and very gorgeous! He’s sequestered upstairs for now while he gets adjusted. Later this afternoon I will visit Mom. They’ve arranged a schedule to bring mothers to a downstairs room, individually, where we can visit and sit outside and talk on the phone or on Zoom. It will be our first time seeing each other for something like six weeks. I’m very excited and dropped off some flowers and gifts for her out there yesterday.

IMHO the most wonderful violet is SL Bois de Violette.

Not my personal favorite, but some like The Different Company I Miss Violet as a modern violet (Betrand Duchaufour).

Maria Candida Gentile Exultat is an incense violet that I really like, too.

Happy Mother’s Day to the moms here at NST! And hugs to those of you who are missing your own mom.

I ended up getting those Tiramisu Oreos at Wegman’s earlier this afternoon. I haven’t tried them yet; I still have a few of the Dark Chocolate ones around.

SOTD = Mon Guerlain Bloom of Rose EdT, from the sample stash and hajusuuri. It’s a fresh and pretty green-ish rose to my nose. An excellent fit for the nice weather that showed up today. ?

    Jasmine, sunscreen scent the air
    Deep breaths and dive in.

Enjoying Mother’s Day with No. 19 Poudre on one arm and No. 19 edt on the other. Couldn’t decide which I wanted so went with both. Missing both my mom and my son today but I’ve enjoyed lengthy calls with both. Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms here!
