Monday scent of the day 4/27

Posted by Robin on 27 April 2020 284 Comments

Monday, if it matters. Birthdays today: Samuel Morse, Ulysses Grant, Coretta Scott King. Also, Prime Rib Day, if you can pull that off. What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with Diptyque L'Ombre dans L'Eau.

Reminder: 5/1 is May Day! Don't forget to rabbit rabbit rabbit, and wear the fragrance that sent you down the rabbit hole. (I think someone suggested this project, raise your hand if it was you!)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Feeling orange blossomy on this grey Monday. Put on And the World is Yours with some Neroli Blanc Intense.

Any time is a hard time for a funeral but it must particularly difficult these days: my condolences. Life *is* short and we should take whatever pleasures we can from it.

Today it’s a drop or two of Fougére Bengale by Parfum d’Empire, a tobacco-and-lavender fougére that smells strongly of curry: I like this a lot. (The original Joseph Abboud also had a potent curry note, but that was back in 1992 and I couldn’t quite get my head around the idea of smelling like food. 1992 was also when Angel came out, and I guess my notion of what a scent ought to smell like changed significantly that year.)

I like whiffs of curry in fragrances, though I know it’s not many folks’ cup of tea. Haven’t smelled Fougere Bengale yet, but I’ve really enjoyed some of the Parfum d’Empires that I’ve crossed paths with!

Curry is the note in ELdO’s Remarkable People that made me buy a bottle. When done well, it’s incredible.

Pre rabbit hole fragrance 1 of 4: Brylcreem Aftershave.
And yes, such a thing existed. I wore this in my early twenties for a good few years before it became unavailable. It smells like a more barbershop version of Paco Rabanne Pour Homme.

I wish I was in Diptyque L’Ombre dans L’Eau. Instead I’m wearing Rosa Pop, which on my skin is rather meh. I wasn’t wanting to wear a rose today, but I found this unused decant, so I thought I’d try it. It’s not working for me today.

I struggle both breakouts. Less sugar usually helps me most. But as I’m not always willing to compromise: Effaclar duo from La Roche Posay is good. I don’t use it all over, just on the areas that need it. It’s not the most hydrating, so if you have dry skin use another hydrating moisturiser (like toleriane from la roche) over or under. Also good for breakouts: Paula’s Choice 2% BHA if that’s easy to get for you.

Paula’s is mainly mail-order (or internet-order if “mail-order” sounds as antiquated to you as it does to Mr. G) and is still fulfilling orders and sending out emails with discount codes in their usual fashion. I use two or three of their products and am a fan, and order turnaround times have always been very quick. For what all that’s worth.

Agree w/ Paula’s Choice. Effective products at an affordable price. I’ve been using multiple products from this company for YEARS! Highly recommend the 2% BHA and the 10% AHA, as well at multiple other products. Just getting myself restarted on her 0.3% retinol and bakuchiol and very much enjoying it.

Another thumbs up for the Effaclar serum. I have a tube on hand for when I feel like something is brewing, but I only use it on the specific spot.
I must say however, since I’ve been using Sunday Riley Good Genes, I’ve had no blemishes at all. Their vitamin C serum is excellent as well. Her stuff is not cheap. I’ll be using up what I have and trying some Paula after that. Picked up some Inkey List products at the Sephora sale, so we’ll see how they work for me.

I have the Jasmin Rouge body cream which is far cheaper than the perfume and extremely potent. I bought it as an alternative to the perfume when I couldn’t really afford a bottle, and now I see no need to ever buy a bottle (unless they stop making the lotion).

Well I don’t know what possessed me but when I walked into my closet I went straight to Tabac Aurea (a NST’er wore it last week and reminded me to find mine, thank you btw!) and put it on the right side of me and neck then moved to Do Son for my left wrist. They are working well together. Tabac Aurea is winning my attention due to placement, I have never tried this one before. I like it.

Roger & Gallet Verveine Utopie today…from the website…Verveine Utopie contains a seductive mix of exotic verbena and gentian root, plus precious distilled essences of cedarwood, guaiacwood, vetiver, basilica and absinthe.

    SotD = Apres L’Ondee

I woke up feeling a little fragile and tender, so even though it is sunny with warm temperatures on the way, Apres L’Ondee is perfect for today. The smell makes me think of delicate pastel colors of pink and blue and lavender, it is my not-citrus cologne. I love it dearly.

Breakfast for me is more of a necessity and chore for starting the day than anything else, but today I woke up hungry, wanting to eat. I started with sprouted whole grain toast with almond butter, then half a little tub of vanilla skir with a dollop of blueberry preserves, finally a handful of granola, then a shard of dark chocolate. Very odd but satisfying.

And here is exactly what I needed to see and hear this morning, a little bit of tenderness and hope from a favorite author:

    https://www.swiss-miss.com/2020/04/a-message-of-hope-from-neil-gaiman.html

Squeeee! My favorite author as a surprise message. I actually started re-reading “American Gods” last night because I wanted to read something, anything, that wasn’t on a screen. I haven’t been able to read a page since March but I read 5 chapters last night.

Thanks tiffanie. That was absolutely perfect.

Was lazier than expected after my shower and wasn’t in the mood to dig around for Idylle Love Blossom, so I spied Yosh Sottile and went with that. Not my favorite, and it will likely get swapped away at some point. Or freebied… I got it at massive discount. I have this strong desire to cull the herd.

Trying to get back into disciplined WW attitude. I haven’t really gained (much) but I’ve been wanting sugar. Made the mistake of buying chocolate after Easter. Need more veggies in the house.

We did get it, but they delivered the filtered EVOO when we wanted/ordered unfiltered. I provided the feedback, but it’s obviously not a huge deal. Very happy they had Pink Lady Apple and Lemon flavored seltzer. It’s the small pleasures…

It’s raining again here today – don’t be too envious, coin-op. ;) Wanted to smell gorgeous and classic, so I went with Chanel 19 EDP. Our weeds are flourishing nicely and I’ve been trying to come up with a way to get rid of them without resorting to a flamethrower. Paving the back yard just doesn’t seem like the right approach somehow. Plus it’s too wet for the flames to catch. If only I could train our moles (of which we usually have fully a flock every year) to eat the weeds, that would be perfect.

LOL! We do have thistles, which I gather goats are fond of, but I’m afraid they might also enjoy the camellias and rhododendrons and day lilies just as much, so maybe not my best option. :) We do have a grape vine that they can eat if they want to though!

Lots of sunscreen today as I’m heading out into the hills for most of the day, so I layered Neroli Portofino on top. I always feel a bit sheepish admitting how much I like this fragrance — Tom Ford’s marketing schtick is irritating and trashy and I know the general consensus is that Neroli Portofino is wildly overpriced for what it is. But I do love it. Something about its posh-sunscreen-on-warm-skin note and its longevity, which doesn’t often accompany neroli-centric classic cologne scents. Along with Azemour les Orangers and SMN Caprifoglio, it’s what I reach for most often through the warm months.

Enjoyed reading what people who are reading are reading last night, but was too late for the pole. Someone mentioned Saint X and not liking it much, but I sort of did. Schaitkin really threads a difficult needle in trying to write from multiple very different perspectives and I thought achieved what she was after. Also recently read Fernanda Melchor’s Hurricane Season, which is brutal but extremely well written and for those who like introspective writing about writing, in novel form, highly recommend Kate Zambreno’s Drifts, Amina Cain’s Indelicacy, and Lisa Robertson’s Baudelaire’s Fractal Review. These will not be for everyone! In the same vein, not as good in my view, but maybe more approachable: Lily King’s Writers and Lovers.

Wearing Fleur de Lalita today to smell pretty on this rainy day.

Slept horribly last night, it was my own fault. I put sriracha in the oyster stew I made and woke up repeatedly with reflux. But bland food gets so borrrring. There’s a guy on my walk that I watched dig up all his grass, and then mow the dirt. He’s been sitting on the dirt the past two days, putting things from a bucket into holes in the ground. I wonder what he’s doing. Bulbs? Potatoes? His wife?
I’m wearing Woman in Gold today and trying to decide if I like it enough to buy a full bottle. I expect NM or Saks to have another sale and it’s the only thing I’m tempted to get because Kilian never shows up at the discounters.
Have a happy week if you can!

I’m in Baume du Doge and loving the rich spicy resiny orange. I’m very unambitious today. Yesterday I managed to talk with my Mom, which doesn’t happen very often. She sounded very good and cheerful and I was so happy. She wishes we could visit but understands there is a bad virus going around. At this point her lack of any good sense of time is a blessing.
Robin, that’s an outstanding photo choice for today! It’s so delicate and beautiful!

Needing to unwind from online grocery shopping. Can’t say enough how much I don’t care for it. Grateful though that bleach was in stock, last time I paid a price gouging sum for it. This too shall pass…right? Lol.

I can’t believe it’s almost May? Gunna be a hot one today too..in the 90s.

Sotd…Orange Cologne by..I forgot his username online…but I think it was a limited edition. I got a small roll on of it several yrs ago. I don’t think he makes perfume anymore. Idk. A very masculine, woody orange scent with soapy sweetness. It’s kept quite well. Will have some Citrus Sunrise Tea to match.

I also like the photo choice today, very gentle and love the use of the negative space.

I have a picture to share, which is not of my bangs, which I cut yesterday in a fit of boredom. . . which is a terrible way to cope with boredom, as it turns out.

I cut my bangs and the length of the rest of it about three weeks ago and it went okay. I have a feeling I’ll be trimming it again before I feel comfortable venturing out to the hairdresser. I have a very low tolerance for hair sitting on the nape of my neck.

I wore Wood Sage and Sea Salt this morning, which was absolutely perfect. I’m not sure why I didn’t reapply it after lunch but I chose Bottega Veneta (which I love) and it seems a little mismatched with this sunny, casual day. Now I’m debating whether to ride out the BV (and maybe apply some serious lipstick) or to wash it off and choose something really chill.

Hi all! I haven’t been in in awhile as I’ve been sleeping later and later! I hope everyone is staying safe, physically and emotionally.

I’m wearing La Myrrhe today, the only superfluous thing I’ve bought since the outbreak reached the US. And even this newest batch smells perfect to me. Aldehydes, gorgeous mandarin marmalade, spiked with pastis and a glowing myrrh.

When my friend went to Paris last year I dithered over getting this one or Sarrasins. I picked Sarrasins and don’t regret it, but I’m glad to have both now.

I’ll try to pop in more regularly. I miss you all!

I went out for a walk this morning. It’s cool today and I was in full COVID-19 and UV protective gear: hat, sunglasses, mask covered by a light gray Buff, trench-like coat, and gloves. I sent friends a selfie (which I never do, but I was basically incognito) — strong resemblance to the Invisible Man. ?

Sunday was my first walk in two months. It’s cool enough that all the gear doesn’t bother me yet, but it was frustrating not to be able to sniff the spring flowers. So I stole some that will in no way be missed, such as a small sprig of lilac. Very soft and warm scent, this variety, almost like vibernum.

The register lady came close to me to check my ID..last time they didn’t do that..hated going in there. Nobody was wearing protective gear at all. I’ll be back at work tomorrow after almost two weeks off spent plowing through the end of my BSN coursework. One paper left & I’ll be done (early! my planned graduation date is 7/31). Right now I hope to never go to school again, but we’ll see. It’s been lovely just breathing without a mask on for 12 hours a day. Stay safe & well!

Chergui right now (pre-shower), as part of my plan to use up almost-empty samples and decants. This was one of my very first samples of SL (and of non-mainstream perfume in general). I do not really love it, but don’t hate it, so may as well use it up.

Will be in Memo Winter Palace post-shower, because today is our wedding anniversary and I want to smell divine (and because my husband likes that one on me as much as I do). We have both had online meetings and classes (to teach) today, but we managed a good walk together when it was still grey and chilly. Now the sun has come out, and I am looking forward to a lovely dinner together at home.

… because jalapeño wore it yesterday. Love it ?! I thought I was going to thunk my sample but there’s at least one more wearing left but perhaps not a therapeutic dose.

Today’s IG post includes a guest appearance by one of my owls. I almost gave up searching for more info on the artist but I persisted and voila! When I travel, I like to bring home an owl souvenir and this was mine from my Houston trip in March (gosh, it feels like a lifetime ago!).

Wore a couple sprays of Terracotta today in an attempt to conjure up Spring. It’s still windy out the but at least the sun is shining now!

Maybe that’s what I need, a nuclear application of Terracotta :-)

I’m in Shalimar Route la la la Mexique from a small decant. I loooove this. ❤️❤️ Yesterday I went a little berserk…used up a quarter of a rollerball of Stella edp on my arms and legs, then added Vanille Insensee on one arm and Clementine California on the other. VI was too much for Stella, but was fun to reek on my morning walk! Hubster had a stuffy nose, so I got away with that little escapade. ?

We were busy this weekend, working in the flower beds and stringing up party lights on the back patio.

Books. I’m having trouble reading these days. I’m reading the head notes and sometimes the recipes from Everyday Dorie, and I’m reading Daisies for Innocence, by Bailey Cattrell. I’m sure that one was from a summer reading poll. I finally finished Eat Pray Love ( isn’t that pathetic?). Cookbooks are especially nice to read right now:

    I hope y’all have a good week!

My mother used to read cookbooks at night for comfort reading, when she was a single parent with a full time job so had no real time to cook. When I was young I thought that was odd but I get it now.

Have you ever read Laurie Colwin? She wrote food essays, with recipes. You might like her books.

I’ve read Home Cooking, but it’s been quite awhile. I had no idea she had written so much in her short life! Thank you so much for the article. I’ll check out the ebooks that are available now. Much appreciated. ?

I think you should call it a “scentscapade”!

Well, it’s definitely Monday for me. Had a full day and started working a little earlier than usual. I had to lead a remote training that was kind of quickly put together. It went well though. I wore Zelda today. Gosh, it’s such a beautiful perfume.

Long day today, as has been the case for weeks now, but grateful that I am working.

Started out in Speakeasy from EastWest Bottlers, which is immediately going in the outbox. Based on the listed notes (“pink pepper, white moss, sapphire gin, patchouli and nutmeg”), I should like it, but it ended up trifling candy floss. Not for me. Sample was from an Olfactif box received sometime this year.

Now in Ambre Sultan, randomly chosen because the sample was on my desk.

I should have taken a break mid-day to put something else on. Opportunity lost! I’ll remember tomorrow. Oh, the little joys of WFH while SIP!

My treats tonight are the episodes of “Killing Even” and “Westworld” that I didn’t watch last night, as I was so pooped from a 3 hour hike that I went to bed early.
