Tuesday scent of the day 4/21

Posted by Robin on 21 April 2020 219 Comments

It's Tuesday (I checked) and National Tea Day in the UK and National Library Workers Day in the US. Plus, a very happy birthday to Queen Elizabeth and Iggy Pop. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Strange Invisible Perfumes Black Rosette. Tea at the moment is Lumbini Estate Ceylon from Upton, with a bit of shaved nutmeg.

Reminder: on 4/24, wear a perfume by Santa Maria Novella, Sonoma Scent Studio, Smell Bent, S-Perfumes or Strange Invisible Perfumes if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter S.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown are items from the Gien Tulipes Noires collection. The tea cup and saucer runs about $45-$55 in the US. "A bold, modern take on a classic tulip motif, Tulip Noir is a graphic reprise of an iconic Gien design. Striking in black and white, the regal tulip reaches across plates and bowls with elegance and audacity. A wink to the official flower of the court of Louis XIV, reinvented for the contemporary table."

    Morning Robin!
My SOTD is Halston Couture, an oldie but goodie, a classic chypre/patchouli/rose perfume and one of my favorites.

I’m enjoying a cup of Rose Green Tea by Kusmi with a splash of Pure Rose Nectar. I’m slowly reducing (not quitting) coffee and finding a nice substitute beverage.

Some ppl are drinking chicory beverages in place of coffee..Celestial Seasonings has a tea called Roastaroma which features that chicory but have not tried it.

thanks for that info! Fortnum and Mason makes a superb, spectacular, wonderful rose tea called “Rose Pouchong” but I cannot really get it in the USA (and the chances of our trip to Europe dwindle day by day). I’ll check out the Tulsi!

OH, I bet that is delicious.
We have a Russian grocery in our neighborhood that carries all varieties of candies, pastilles, teas, and other goodies. The hubby and I like to play the ‘guess what’s in this package’ game. The twist is we each pick a food the other has to eat, which makes for hilarious moments.

Yay! When we were in Florida in January there were lots of Russian groceries, it was great fun to look at the candies & jams & whatnot.

Not on here much….my life is consumed with work and then tutoring/homeschooling/digital learning, so my time is not my own lately!

Wearing Calvin Klein Downtown for the 1st time (I found it for $12.99 at TJ Maxx back when we could browse perfume to our heart’s content) and I like it! Soft and relaxed fruity floral…..

SOTD: Eau des Sens by Diptyque

First time since NYC started social distancing that I had to wait in line to use the elevator to my apt this morning. Not sure why so many are out and about at 8 am in the morning but there you have it. Only one person at a time allowed, which I’m perfectly happy to abide by.

I was on the BG site last night and did some damage. All along I thought Nordstrom was going to fulfill a pre-sale order but COVID made a mess of things. On the bright side, I ended up with getting the item ++ at 25% off which really means I have money left over. Plus, I am getting $s back from the cr-ppy masks from Custom Ink and I get to keep them…I may use them to experiment with sewing 2 layers and adding a filter pouch…I don’t have high hopes given my track record with sewing.

Beautiful sunny day here. There’s a wind advisory but not a leaf is stirring. Strange.

I’m in 7 Virtues Vetiver of Haiti courtesy of a lovely NSTer, in hopes of finding some zen.

Had to venture out to Ingalls yesterday for the makings of beef stew and honey oatmeal whole wheat bread. Forgot my list, but managed to get everything I needed. Amazed by the number of people not wearing masks, including supermarket workers. We’re not officially open here, but many people are acting like we are. I had a dream last night that I developed a fever and cough…

Sunny out this morning too, finally, but I believe we’re expecting thunderstorms. And it’s in the 50s, which is just wrong for late April.

I am not seeing many masked people here but I have not been in a store in weeks. I hope workers are wearing them.

I have obtained a few things via curbside delivery as well, and the people who bring them out are sometimes wearing masks and sometimes not.

Surprising how long online grocery shopping takes. Sometimes I get frustrated and don’t even finish an order. One should just be able to do it with voice..”Alexa get me Pepto, a Mad Magazine and broccoli soup from Target” and voila…they are at your doorstep in an hour.

Deva, are people not wearing masks there because COVID-19 hasn’t appeared in that area yet, or other reasons?

I guess I can sort of understand people feeling safer in less densely populated areas, not that I would, but I’m the kind of person who always fastened seatbelts before it was the law.

It’s here. We have/had a covid unit in the hospital I’m at and have had deaths as well. Since the social distancing started, the covid admissions decreased and they closed the designated unit unless we get another influx of positive and symptomatic people. We still have a few positive patients, but they are on regular floors. 20 elderly people in a nearby ALF were diagnosed last week. I’ve only been to work, Ingalls, Walmart, and the gas station. Everyone at the hospitals masks, no visitors allowed in at all. Very few shoppers masking at Ingalls and Walmart, and I saw very few workers wearing them. ?

      Here,
it’s really store dependent. Trader Joe’s: All employees were masks, people at the exit and entry wipe all carts, many wear gloves, because the store is busy, all line up, etc. – and many customers wear masks and/or gloves. The local grocery one mall over? Business as usual, but they have always been a quiet store so don’t need to do crowd control.

In Goldea from a decant. The name! Oy. I can’t shake the impression of woman, similar vintage to my grandmother, blue rinse, livid pink lipstick, tubular girdle, loud laugh, not as good at Scrabble as she would like people to think, but has a mean chopped liver recipe. Yep. All that from a name. Goldea. The perfume is okay. I’ll enjoy the decant but I have no need to purchase an FB.

My most recent fiction read was My Year of Rest and Relaxation, which was a terrible book to read during a pandemic where no one can leave their house. . . I think I am due for an improbable solving of a gory murder in some picturesque or historical context, once I’ve finished this bit of depressing journalism.

Happy Tuesday, all. Thanks to everybody for the flood of well wishes yesterday! It was a busy day, but I got through it, and thankfully today is a little less task-filled.

It’s a lovely day outside of my window. Anybody notice more birds singing, these days?

Maybe that’s it. Fewer cars. Sadly, the leaf blowers are still going strong in my hood in the mornings.

But right at this moment, there is birdsong, and quiet, and I am celebrating by spritzing a hefty three sprays from my just-barely-there decant of GD Seve Exquise. Might manage to thunk it tomorrow. It’ll be a satisfying yet bittersweet moment. Today, though, I’m just going to enjoy its gloriousness.

Yes, I’ve been loving all the stories about wild animals becoming more relaxed and showing up in formerly busy human filled places. It’s the upside of this for me. Saw an article about lions in Krueger, as well as other animals all around the world. They’re probably having a wonderful time in the absence of us two legged folks…

I am playing Prince tunes all day long as it is the anniversary of his passing and honestly he was so much more than just what we saw in the biggest hits – although many of them were/are amazing, they are pretty much overplayed. Here is clip of his early practice in 1984 as a young man just the piano, just beautiful featuring what he would do later in life. I hope that you listen to this and are as amazed as I was when I discovered his discography. He is a stake in the ground for me because it was this year that he died that I was to learn shortly of the stage 4 diagnoses of 2 of the dearest people in my life.
His discography really helped me through because it is full of hope and joy and playfulness. He was a prodigy.

Today is fajita Tuesday, I have leftover steak. The hummingbirds are sucking down the food in the feeder so fast I watch the level drop daily, there must be a nest nearby. I am venturing out this morning to the grocery store, I have no more vegetables or milk and delivery services are backed up weeks, but a wonderful organization called the Portland Mask Project sewed me a mask and delivered it (!) because I am high risk (read *old*). I’m wearing 11 sprays of En Passant because it’s spring. Looking forward to summer.

I have had very good luck with instacart by picking a time 5-6 days in advance. Zero luck with peapod and have given up trying.

The trick to Whole Foods seems to be to get your cart loaded, and then obsessively reload the page that shows available delivery times, then if you get a time grab it without even looking at it and pay IMMEDIATELY. If you stop to think if it’s a good time for you, somebody else has already grabbed it.

There is also a chrome extension that will reload the page for you and play a little noise when there is a time slot, but I could not get it to work. Found that on Reddit if anybody wants to google it.

SSS Champagne de Bois for me today, which I’ve finally come around to. It smelled too urinous for me years ago when I first tried it, but I tried it again a couple months ago and now it works on me. I’ve had this little spray sample for many years, and I’m now getting close to finishing it. The aldehydic shimmery sandalwood felt right for this cooler, cloudy day. I almost wore Yin & Ylang since a couple of you wore it yesterday, but CdB felt more appropriate. Three sprays to each arm and two to my chest!

Good afternoon! (At least on the East Coast, U.S.)

Blursday again, but with thunderstorms. I turned off my new-to-me refurbished desktop computer when the thunder started and switched to my laptop. I should go out and pick up a few pharmacy things and foods that were on the other grocery store list, the one I didn’t take to Wegman’s with me. I’m not feeling ambitious about leaving the house, though. :P

Scent of this morning/early afternoon: Parfums d’Empire Corsica Furiousa. I like it.

At least Mom and I got out for a little walk in the development on the nice day this week. Sunday, I think? Some folks who live on little side roads we don’t usually go down have blooming double cherry trees — very pretty. I did yard work after that.

Grocery shopping is a rather grim affair these days. I miss certain aspects of how things were, though I don’t miss trying to get to areas of the store through big crowds of people. I miss being able to see friends in person, though my friends are comfortable talking on the phone.

I was happily surprised that I heard thunder only a couple of times this afternoon. And no lightning strikes in my area! However, the wind more than made up for the lack of lightning. I’m still hearing the occasional gust outside.

I was thinking about going out after dinner, since there was still some sun. Then the wind picked up and even some of our larger trees were swaying alarmingly. I decided that I really didn’t want to go out that badly. Go figure.

I have lots and lots of books to read at home, print and e-books, so I’m all right with a day of not going out to a store. :)

Last night I was planning on going to bed relatively early, and then found that on the Tor website, Judith Tarr was doing retrospective reviews of Andre Norton’s books. And then I found that another author was looking at aspects of C.S. Lewis’ Narnia books.

I had thought for a long time that the bookshelves of science fiction books in our family room were books that Dad had gotten in the 1960s, but he told me recently that they were actually originally his father’s science fiction collection. Papa C. had given me the Dragonriders of Pern trilogy for my birthday when I was in my early- to mid-teens, but certain implications in those books soared right over my head at the time.

But those bookshelves had a good number of Andre Norton’s books, and I’d picked up more of her books up probably when I was in my later teens. I missed implications there too, perhaps, because Ms. Tarr and some of the people commenting are analyzing the thoughts of some of the male characters towards each other with “slash goggles” on. :D I’ll have to look at some of those passages again to see if they strike me as homoerotic now that I have more of an idea about the ways that texts and subtexts can be interpreted.

I’m ready for warm weather! And sun, too! Sun would be nice. Being in the house a lot when it’s gray outside or going out on a stressful shopping trip are not that helpful for my mood, but I’m trying to keep my spirits up.

I’d made iced tea on Monday night, with decaf English Breakfast and fresh spearmint. Having enough spearmint up now to pick and use for flavoring is one of those little joys in life that I’m trying to appreciate. :)

Speaking of royals, Sweden’s Princess Sofia has taken a training course and will be volunteering at the Sophiahemmet Hospital in Stockholm where she is also the honorary chairperson.

    https://www.glamour.com/story/princess-sofia-of-sweden-is-fighting-covid-19-as-a-medical-assistant

The article notes that the hospital has no confirmed coronavirus cases, but it’s reportedly overwhelmed during this time.

I burned some lovely incense this morning. When that’s all gone, I think I will join Robin in Black Rosette from a sample.

This might be the best link but I saw that the great Bodleian library had been planning to open an exhibition of scents ‘harvested’ ( by chemists ) from the books in its collection…the Magna Carta , a first edition of Romeo and Juliet, T.S Elliot manuscript and even the library itself. there are better links but For subscribers of the newspapers. The exhibition is postponed but wouldn’t it be great.

SOTD PdE Yuzu Fou. Started in Shaal Nur, but I needed something with more abrasiveness.
I am in general out of sorts with the whole world. The 99 year old who raised 17 million pounds by walking laps of his garden vs Geraint Thomas who spent 36 hours on Zwift in 3 days and could only raise 360k pound. Really? And people are impressed by the old guy walking laps??
Apologies, but because all routine appointments and routine surgery are cancelled (and though Covid cases are climbing, hospitalizations are way down), our practice has decided that half of us will take leave this week and the other half next week, to be reviewed weekly after that. Being idle during these times is brutal.

My brother is in a surgery practice with 4 others. They decided to have 2 working for 2 weeks onsite while the other 3 work via telemedicine for the same time, then they switch. “Business” is down 90%, and whatever surgery has to be done takes more than twice as long with the operating rooms being ummmm positive or negative air something. He had to assume that every patient is presumed positive as far as PPE is concerned and before surgery is done, the patient must test COVID-19 negative via a test from 48 hours prior.

Those operating rooms are probably using positive air pressure to keep possible contaminants out. Negative air pressure would act like a vacuum cleaner and draw things into the room.

Ok, it finally happened; Shalimar got me. Or I finally get Shalimar. And now I want to drench myself in it. But I’m not going to do that to my co-workers, I’ll save that for Thursday when I’m working from home.
Yesterday and today are No. 5 Edt. It’s the only other thing that appeals.
I got to see my brother, sister-in-law, and nephew for the first time in a month! My nephew is 5months old; he’s getting so big and he can laugh now.

SsotD = l’air du desert marocain (right arm) + au coeur du desert (left arm)

Finally taking time to smell these together. They are very close at first. But after a few minutes laddm smells sweeter and spicier and woodier, au coeur has the same notes with an airy and almost mineral feeling. Love them both.

It’s time for a walk, the sun is shining and there’s a gentle breeze. Perfect weather for breathing deep and smelling things.

Hope this Tuesday-bluesday treats everyone right.

Wild weather for me today! Already had 2 rounds of thunderstorms so far. The second round had crazy high winds that should have blown down some of the trees in my neighborhood, but thankfully did not. ⚡??

SOTD = back in Prada Candy. I’ve gone back and forth on if I want a small spray bottle of this or not. It is an insanely cute bottle. But I’m thinking I should stick to getting bottles only of perfumes that I love. And Candy seems stuck in the “friend zone” for me.

After failing to find where on earth I filed away the “S to Z” part of my alphabet of samples, I looked in my regular collection for something springy and found the perfect thing—Zoologist Chameleon. Fruity flowery and smoothed out with coconut, very bright and cheerful for our pretty day.

I was an almond girl today. Layering PdN Kiss Me Intense and Saab L’Eau Couture. If it’s Tuesday, it’s sandwich-making day. We made over 700 PB&J and Meat/cheese sammies today. And my back held out quite well. Getting the hang of this.

I also stopped at the drugstore because we were getting low on dishwashing liquid and coffee. For those of you discussing TP, I can tell you they were fully stocked near me.

And…as I headed home, I noticed no line to enter Whole Foods, so I ventured in. Bought some hydrangea, which made me quite happy. They seemed decently well stocked on most items. Everyone was fully masked. The streets were really quiet out there today…maybe it was the dicey weather. We even had a tornado warning!

I love hydrangea. Idk how I know this but I guess Madonna hates hydrangea cause it doesn’t have scent, or something like that. I think she was rude to a fan who brought her a hydrangea or something.
