Welcome to edition 5 of the Picture Challenge! Our community project for today: wear a perfume that matches the picture, which is Three Dancers, Mills College, 1930, by photographer Imogen Cunningham. (You can find more information here, or listen to a brief interview on Cunningham here.)
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I thought about April Aromatics Ray of Light, but I ended up in Imaginary Authors Mosaic, for the energy + bright sunlight + concrete.
Reminder: on 4/24, wear a perfume by Santa Maria Novella, Sonoma Scent Studio, Smell Bent, S-Perfumes or Strange Invisible Perfumes if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter S.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Idéal Vintage, from a generous NSTer and thunk
Blue linen shirt and blue bell bottom pants
Because of the exchange I had yesterday with johanob I had very sweet dreams last night ???☺️
;D
😉
And because of your outfit of the day,I suddenly do NOT feel so blue…lol.
Glad you had a “good” night!???
? sure did ?
I saw your pic with fashion accessory (mask) and admired your coat!
In Elie Saab’s Essence No. 1: Rose, today. It seems to complement the sunny weather here perfectly!
We have sun too, just wish it would warm up!
This photo reminds me of my own women’s college experience, during which, to date it precisely, I wore Clinique Happy, Ralph by Ralph Lauren, or vanilla body products. I don’t have Happy or Ralph on hand (I haven’t smelled either in years) so I’ve gone for the closest clean fruity-floral mood in my collection now, Fresh Sake.
Nice work around!
I decided to try to pick a perfume with a lot of light-dark contrast like the photo, that also feels uplifted like the dancers. I went with Kelly Caleche.
I love Kelly Caleche! It is such a happy, bright and uplifting fragrance. You smell great!
Excellent choice
Good response.
Off topic scent today, Yatagan. I seem to be on a Caron kick lately, things could be worse. If I can find my bottle, tomorrow it will be Eau de Reglisse. Happy Friday!
Happy Friday to you girardEAU!
The bottle for Montana Parfum de Peau always makes me think of (among numerous other things) a woman dancing ecstatically, and so I am wearing a single drop of the 1986 vintage, a true everything-all-at-once eighties fragrance that is really a floral chypre, but also an animalic oriental, with a massive dose of honey up top and some aldehydes just to start things off with a bang. It’s really something.
I love those everything-all-at-once, more-is-more eighties scents. You smell divine! I am impressed with your restraint at using only one drop. I know you don’t need much, but I’m always tempted to throw on a lot of it, just like we did in the eighties.
It’s not restraint! I’m in lockdown at home with the other half, who has shall we say an extremely low tolerance for scents, so this is not the time to spray or douse with abandon. Most of the time I wear a small, barely perceptible smudge of one of the dozen Lush solids I own. The rest of the time it’s a single drop or a tiny spritz of something that won’t make him feel assaulted. If it was just me, I’d smell like a harlot’s boudoir all the time. ALL the time.
The eighties really were a different time, weren’t they? In so many ways.
?? Pyramus I love your comment above: “if it was just me, I’d smell like a harlot’s boudoir all the time. ALL the time..”?
So I am in Mandy Aftel’s ‘Secret Garden’ today as I see these ladies dancing in a secret special garden, dancing for a private audience or maybe just for themselves…. like we would do when we are ALL FREE FREE FREE again.
Happy weekend all.
I particularly liked the 2nd “ALL the time” for emphasis ???
I’ve always loved that bottle,it reminds me of an M.C.Escher “impossible” sketch.
And you smell lovely!
It might be the most evocative bottle ever made. It apparently was based on a time-lapse photo of a falling maple seed (or at least the idea of one, helicoptering to the ground). It also calls to mind a strand of DNA, it’s clearly a stack of oval discs, and as I said, I’ve always thought of it as the abstracted torso of a woman dancing with abandon. Add that etched-glass finish and you have a bottle that just begs to be picked up and caressed. It’s amazing, a piece of modern sculpture.
Cool to know the inspiration for the bottle,I did not know that!
*adds Montana to lemming list*
Maybe the 6ft sillage will make a comeback!
I opened the perfume draw this morn. and there was my decant of 31 Rue Cambon and I went for it. Peace in the house be damned, I have missed this one! Such a gorgeous scent and it brings me great joy.
Friday is here but the days have a different meaning now, don’t they?
As does time. Hard to make sense of it. Nevertheless, happy Friday!
They sure do. Had to think about what day of the week it was this morning. Nice perfume choice!
Mondays like Sundays, like Tuesdays, like Wednesdays…
I’m off topic also, in Fleur de Carotte. Am I supposed to smell carrots?
Yes! But I don’t remember that one all that well. Maybe just vegetal iris?
Maybe a little cliched, but literally interpreting jumping for….Joy.
Project’s given me an excuse to haul out my vintage, estate sale acquired bottle.
Plus, need some mojo on this snowy, gloomy morning.
That’s some good mojo there! You smell wonderful and spring will come.
Love your choice, and the association with the picture is perfect!
I thought about Joy too 🙂
Vintage Je Reviens, my signature scent from the late 70s and 80s and my only vintage bottle. It’s what the picture makes me think of, but I can’t tell you why exactly.
Vintage ?♀️ twins
Vintage Je Reviens is gorgeous! You smell wonderful!
Another vintage Je Reviens fan here. My late MIL brought me a tiny vial of the pure perfume, a deep blue bottle in a deep blue suede pocket, back from a cruise she took in the 1970’s. It spawned my love affair with the fragrance, a favorite of mine in spring. And I still have – and treasure – her gift.
In Penhaligon’s Iris Prima, which was inspired by the English National Ballet dancers. A very soft, simple, happy perfume that always puts a smile on my face.
Happy Friday, everyone!
Sounds a propos. Liked that one when I sampled it.
It is a nice no-brainer!
Perfect,you smell lovely!Happy Friday !??
Thank you, dear! Hope you are having a great day! ???
Happy Friday??
Thank you! Same to you! ??
Thanks for all the support yesterday. No decisions have been made in regards to my grandmother, apparently, the doctor is looking at results to see if it’s hospice. Wearing no 5 edt and have made the decision to hold off on a new bottle right now. Have other drama going on that I need to deal with before I go on a spending spree. Fun money is going to have to wait for the next couple months.
Stay strong through the drama Dawn!
I missed your post yesterday but wanted to send positive energies and caring thoughts your way. And a hug.
Habanita EdP. From Robin’s link: “Three Dancers, Mills College, 1929 demonstrates the elegance and physical abilities of the simultaneous jumping of the dancers”. And for me, elegance and power is what Habanita is about.
Oh, Habanita is a very good choice for that photo!
Thank you!
Yes, that’s an excellent choice!
I had absolutely no ideas for the community project. I think it’s a great photograph but it didn’t connect with me. Maybe because I’m such a terrible dancer?
So I’m wearing a labdanum and vanilla body oil topped with 4 sprays of Dame’s Earth Mother. I smell amazing.
Happy Friday everyone!
4 sprays, wow! That one is powerful on me, 2 sprays lasts all day.
You are right, you do smell amazing!
Oh, I am definitely fragrant. If I was leaving the house I would have only used two.
ha! i’m a terrible dancer too.
Went with Rodin Bis for the CP – it’s got a very vintage vibe and the opening of lemon, bergamot and anise flower really jumps off the skin! Three notes for three jumpers.
Starting off the day with my usual coffee+cream.
I took a hot bath with about two cups of lavender Epsom salts yesterday and dosed myself with wine, chocolate and copious amounts of SL Noir Exquis before bed. I woke up still feeling quite marvelously zen.
Wishing a chill Friday to everyone!
Wow, that sounds like a great way to drift off to bed.
I love the photo and am in Deauville…or Coco Mademoiselle Fresh as I like to call it. 😉
I was hoping someone was going to wear Coco Mademoiselle today, so I could share this link. You will have to do 🙂
For those who REALLY like CM: https://www.chanel.com/us/fragrance/p/116090/coco-mademoiselle-parfum-grand-extrait/?gclid=CjwKCAjwp-X0BRAFEiwAheRui6JxnGWd7cJC2Csq4EpAUxboOqnCd2QJZyEJuFrfUYqBjTq-5JItChoCT2MQAvD_BwE
?
I’m wearing Queen of the Night by Grandiflora. Another Duchaufour gem, this time a white floral.
I still feel like I’m sleep walking. Hope everyone is well and healthy and safe.
That’s such a gorgeous scent!
I’ve felt like I’ve been sleepwalking for the last few weeks. It’s only just starting to lift.
You smell great!
I should wear it more often but sometimes I feel like this scent wears me haha. Its weird because its a feeling I dont often get with fragrances.
It has quite a strong presence. Not as strong as some others. I really enjoy it, but doubt I will ever want more than just my sample. It shares some notes with Ciel d’opale which I like a tad more.
you smell good while sleep walking
That’s a really nice beautiful scent. Aaah.
I’m in Narciso Pure Musc. The name makes is sound more intimidating than it is, it’s a pleasant skin scent imo.
Makes IT?
I really like Pure Musc. It’s clean and sultry at the same time.
I like it too,it’s soft with just a touch of floral.
Okay…I’m doing a fairly random/obscure reference for CP. I wanted something kind of cozy and warm because the weather has turned cold here again. But that doesn’t fit the photo…
So…I went with location reference. Mills College is down the road from where Kyse Perfumes is made. I chose Kyse Mandorlo Cioccolato for its almond, chocolate and boozy vanilla. (I know, I know…heck of a stretch.)
And enjoying back-to-back episodes of Psych on TV (which I generally don’t have on during the day…).
Ooh extra points for you on the Kyse tie in to Mills!
I love Kyse but haven’t been giving them their proper due since I have been going steady w/ Solstice Scents the past 9 months or so. Maybe I shouldn’t be so exclusive w/ SS…maybe I need to play the field more…decisions…decisions… 😉
Almond, chocolate AND boozy vanilla? I need this on my skin!
Anyone else have any Kyse favorites?
Bonbons à la Vanille, Douceur Brûlée, Delizia de Marshmallow & Cocco alla Vaniglia are some Kyse favourites.
SotD is Hinoki
I find it harder to keep my spirits up. I tried to read more and I have a pile of interesting history books nearby, but I can only concentrate for one hour and then I am tired ?
But movies are also a great consolation and cost me less energy to focus on.
I watched The Farewell yesterday we paid for a rent at a streaming service, i think it was Apple.. Renting or buying movies online besides our regular streaming service, is something we do more often lately. Especially now, the cinemas are closed and we wont be spending money there, might as well catch up with quality/new stuff at home.
Its a heartwarming film and I had to cry really hard during a particular scene. It was weird…i hardly cry during movies. But I guess this situation changes us all.
A week ago I watched The Age of Innocence. Its on Netflix. Its been ages since I saw it. Yes it feels a bit dated/90s but its still very watchable and I enjoyed it immensly.
Btw Never read the book, so I dont know how it compares to that)
Even if you dont like the story of the horrible New York elite, you can still admire those suits, dresses and jewelry and a young Daniel Day Lewis ?
Btw I had a hard time finding something for the cp. Sorry Robin.
I saw those Ballet dancers and thought Afternoon of a faun (i have some left in my sample)…. or Diaghilev.
But haha Diaghilev haha..not going to happen. Or any Roja for that matter.
I once tried a few Rojas in a store and yes some of them were okay and some were good, but not hundreds and hundreds of euros good?
Someday I’d like to run across some Rojas just to give them a sniff.
This massive change all demands a lot of us in sheer mental energy. I too find it incredibly hard to concentrate and am completely exhausted after 5 hours of work.
I read The Age of Innocence ages ago, although I never watched the movie.
I tried Hinoki a few months ago and enjoyed it. I have the Monocle scent: Laurel, which smells just like Alep soap. I found Hinoki quite meditative and very pleasant.
I wear Hinoki quite often. My husband is also a fan.
Its not a very complicated or expressive scent but it never disappoints and its calming. Sometimes thats all you need ?
I have to confess I never read anything by Warthon ?
Is the age of innocence a good choice to get to know her work or do you recommend something else?
I can’t remember it awfully well. I also read her unfinished novel The Buccaneers. Neither left much of an impression. I’m sure others are far more capable of making valuable suggestions.
I think TAoI is generally considered to be her masterpiece.
Thanks for the reply! ?
The House of Mirth would be my Wharton pick. The precision of the language and the insights into (inner) character and class are breathtaking
Thank you, Kanuka ?
Sounds good!
You smell great, so that is what matters! I too have had a hard time reading – and I read a lot normally. TV and movies, of the right sort, can absorb me at the moment much more than most books at the moment.
I haven’t seen The Age of Innocence since it came out, but as someone who loves the book and was very worried about Scorsese directing a movie version, I was very pleasantly surprised. (I admire his work, of course, but most of it is so male-centered I wasn’t sure he’d get Wharton.) He 100% gets what the book is about and the performances, especially by Danial Day-Lewis, very much in conversation with Scorsese by all accounts, are perfect.
Yup most of his work is male centered, after seeing this in the 90s I was kinda disappointed he did not continue making movies with better developed female characters..or a female lead…
But i have to give him (or his casting manager haha) credit for giving Sharon Stone an opportunity to shine (i thought she did awesome in Casino).
I saw that movie on the other day. I paused just long enough to admire Daniel Day Lewis very attractive face.
Yes he is handsome and a great actor. I also love his more recent work.
Phantom thread and There will be blood….but those movies were not only phenomenal because or him. Paul Thomas Anderson is a great director. ?
I’ve both read and watched The Age of Innocence but it’s been years so I don’t recall much about either, although I do love the casting in the movie.
You aren’t alone in your feelings. At my therapist’s suggestion, I’ve made a new schedule for myself involving less internet time. I’m starting it……Monday.
Here’s a quote from Edith Wharton that I just love:
“In spite of illness, in spite even of the archenemy sorrow, one can remain alive long past the usual date of disintegration if one is unafraid of change, insatiable in intellectual curiosity, interested in big things, and happy in small ways.”
Great quote!
I love that quote, thank you.
The way some governments/people are handling (or should we say, NOT handling ?) this crisis is immensely depressing. I wont go into details as it will get too political very quickly.
So yes, I try to minimise the intake of news/newspapers and social media.
But I still read all the comforting words here, and i check some jokes or funny clips friends send me and I am good again.
I really liked Farewell and had been wanting to see it ever since the piece on This American Life. The radio piece was much funnier than the movie! I liked the movie too, but it was sadder.
Its been a while since I listened to This American Life…i will check this episode out, thank you!
I also empathize with your inability to read books at this time as I suffer from the same malady. Usually I have at least two books going at the same time and my book discussion groups are one of the highlights of my month. Fortunately, music and nature have at least temporarily filled that void and offer solace.
I forgot all about the community project today, and even what day of the week it is. My child’s school assignments were NOT going well this morning, and it’s much colder than I was expecting on top of that. I needed warmth and a bit of calgon-take-me-away, so I’m in Botafumeiro.
Mmm, you smell good!
SJP Lovely Sheer, first because it’s spring and warm and also for the youthful and energetic feeling the three young dancers are sending. I should wear this more, even got a compliment from a coworker
Nice!
I’m wearing Madame Rochas, which has clean modern lines similar to the picture and also a warm, minerally facet that reminds me of those sunny stucco walls.
I received my blind buy from Olympic Orchids yesterday and of course, I don’t like either of them. Which teaches me to blind buy at this stage in the game, or to assume that just because I liked one perfume in a line I’ll like any of the others.
Tropic of Capricorn: has some potential but is so animalic it overwhelms everything else, and that’s coming from someone who wears La Nuit regularly. Like Bal a Versailles’ plodding unpopular sister. It does improve a bit when it softens and sweetens after being worn for a bit, but I was expecting something actually tropical considering all the talk of overripe mango and florals in reviews of this scent. In fact I can barely smell either.
Blackbird: pine air freshener. That’s it. No detectable blackberry. Smells like the inside of your grandfather’s car.
I like a lot of her fragrances but Blackbird didn’t work for me either. Sorry your blind buys didn’t work out.
Haha, thanks. Revisiting them tonight I was too hard on Tropic of Capricorn; the mango and florals DO stop by about an hour in, though it’s still a very animalic scent. I could see myself enjoying this one.
But I think Blackbird is just too much pine for me – it’s so green it’s almost astringent.
Blackbird is hardcore. I was hoping it would be the blackberry perfume of my dreams, but ya, the pine is overwhelming. It’s so strong that my little sample was the only thing I could smell when opening my perfume drawer, so I sequestered it.
I was hoping for more blackberry as well, kind of a more woodsy Blackberry and Bay. But I just don’t love pine enough, I’ll probably swap this one to someone who does.
I enjoy looking at the pictures for the picture challenges, but I’m pretty hopeless at matching scents to them. It’s chilly and gray here, stuck in the fog, so I went with something warming: Tom Ford Amber Absolute. Not something I would ever wear to work since it is such a shouter, but I do love it.
TGIF, y’all! I have been sticking to my resolution to keep defined work hours… no work on the weekends, and logging off at 6pm on weekdays. It’s helping my mood and sanity tremendously.
You smell great!
Good morning everyone,so my SOTD was supposed to be the final 10(!!!) sprays of Etro Heliotrope.Turns out there was about 5 sprays left, obviously not enough for my greedy nose…So I went to Plan B to layer with something else:28 La Pausa edt.I’ve never worn these two together,BUT!!The result? It smells JUST.LIKE.Van Cleef and Arpels Bois d’Iris…And I love it!!Loveloveloooove it!
Heliotrope THUNKED,also.
You guys all smell lovely.
Tie-in with the CP:Heliotrope smells like spring and sunshine, while the chilly austere Iris from 28LaP miggt remind one of wet or cold concrete/cement…that’s my take on it anyway.
HAPPY FRIDAY!
XO??
Happy FriYAY
I thought you were supposed to wear thirty sprays of PoaL!? ?
Haha!It was a contender yes,but then I thought Death By 30 Sprays of Portrait of a Lady does NOT sound appealing…lol
Happy weekend Johanob! ???️??I always love reading your spontaneous posts ?
Hi Jiji!
Thank you so much!I’m glad if my little contributions here every now and then gives people a little enjoyment.
Happy Weekend to you as well!
???
High five for the thunk and happy Friday!
That sounds like a great combination! And congrats on the ‘thunk’!
Nothing to do with the amazing picture, but I was in the mood for Portrait of a Lady today so that is what I am wearing.
You smell terrific!
Oh!Very very nice…How many sprays?Lol
That photo feels so totally Oakland to me–so I tried to think of a perfume that feels like home. Gave up, and went for Ella by Arquist on the theory that jasmine, something anamalic, and a faint hit of cigarette were the scents of my teen years, hanging out with friends on the UC Berkeley campus (I didn’t set foot onto Mills until my oldest was about four–took him to a dance class there. . . .). The light in the photo looks like summer sunlight, in the morning. If anyone know the date of the photo (month and time of day), I am curious.
Did you start Circe yet?
I am reading this book called Saint X, so far its ok.
I read Oona out of Order which was hysterical…and after Dear Edward, also good, and before that Dark Vanessa. None of them I would say you should go running to the bookstore to buy (alas, none are open).
Naw. Got a few books on my side-table. I will, eventually!
Wearing vintage Chanel No, 19–I wore it in my boho/wrap skirt and leotard days, so it seems to match the modern dance image. It also conveys power and grace, very spine stretching. Cold here, but sunny. Time for laundry and a new recipe. I made a fantastic all in one pasta dish the other night which will be hard to beat….one good thing about this quarantine, it has sure upped my cooking game.
Cold sunny laundry day here too jepster! 2 loads down, 1 to go.
oh, you beat me…only two loads. Two more tomorrow.
Ya, makes me wonder if people will continue cooking most of their meals in the coming years. We’ve certainly been eating better than we normally do.
I know that I have been eating better….I may actually have lost a pound or two. I have never been a big snacker, but I did eat a few meals out each week, now, not so much……
Yup. Same, same, same.
I watched a couple YouTube videos yesterday and decided not cut my own hair, I am not that coordinated.
When I was in the back yard I whacked my face on a low-hanging lilac branch and it smelled so good today I’m wearing Desarmant. No connection at all to the CP. Also while I was in the backyard I saw that Nima the dog had decided to dig a hole to lie in. Out of the entire back yard that I wouldn’t care if he dug up, he had to choose the tiny bit that I do care about: The raised beds the strawberry plants are in. *sigh* I love him dearly and both he and the cats are helping me stay sane, but really. He has several other holes dug in past years that he could have reused.
Ha! You thought it was a strawberry bed, but no, it’s a dog bed 🙂
Pixel, thank you for the first LOL moment I’ve had all week!
I’ve been on a Dior kick this month. Today I’m wearing Tendre Poison.
I have great memories of vintage Poison, someday I’ll have to get my nose on the flankers.
Well, I’m wearing silver Gentle Fluidity from MFK which doesn’t go along with the photo.
For the photo I’d have chosen Penhaligon’s Iris Prima (is it even still available?) or Filippo Sorcinelli Rosa Nigra because it has that cashmeran note that smells like wet concrete.
Rosa Nigra is so distinctive. I have a sample somewhere…
Woo hoo, not sure what day it feels like today but I know tomorrow is Saturday!
I went literal with the picture and wore 3 perfumes, 4 sprays each. I was very tempted to go 10 each but decided to save that for another day and with one perfume only.
SOTD = Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine, Parfums d’ Empire Azemour Les Orangers and Prada Les Infusions de Prada Mandarine
Orange ? overload and loving it!
Feast your eyes and your senses!
https://www.instagram.com/p/B_F1Gi6hryV/?igshid=1g8wugtwck3z3
Now back to work and will comment later!
Crisp and uplifting, just like the photograph!
That combo must be intriguing!
Love Azemour and Prada Infusion de Mandarine. Only Atelier Cologne orange didn’t work for me.
That Orange Sanguine bottle is wonderful!
I like your literal interpretation very much — enjoy!
Nice!! Happy Friday.
Oooh, nice!
I bet you smell amazing. I love oranges and I need more orange scents in my life. And really like that older Parfum d’Empire bottle. So much better than the new ones.
Today I bought a bottle of gin that is made with sevilla oranges and I made a gin tonic with it.
Here is a toast to you and to oranges ??
Great idea! 🙂 I like the first and the third and don’t remember PdE’s one.
off project in Noir de Noir from Nordstrom sample.
very pretty cozy scent….has anyone here done a side by side comparison with either Café Tuberose or Armaf Club de Nuit Intense? it sounds like those are two scents many people compare to NdN
Club de Nuit Intense is very close. Cafe Tuberosa, might be in the same ballpark, but they don’t smell alike imo.
Thanks Lillyjo…I have café tuberrose on my left sleeve now, and noir de noir on my right – very different but they do have a similar cozy quality, and both so rich they almost feel “tobacco-y”
Agree with Lillyjo! Club de Nuit Intense is very, very close to Noir de Noir. However, Cafe Tuberose is a completly different scent.
I have a bottle of Nuit Intense and I love it!
So, as a Mills alum I decided to just go with what I wore back then. I still have a tiny bottle of an oil labelled “Sagittarius” which I bought in a head shop on Telegraph Ave about a block away from UC Berkeley. I smell like a hippie 🙂
My best friend wore Liz Claiborne (in the yellow triangle bottle) and if I had some I’d have sprayed it on in Shelter-In-Place level spritzes!
Ah, you just gave me flashbacks of Telegraph Ave in the late 80s/early 90s. I remember a great pizza place, and seem to recall that they made a green pizza that I loved. But now I’m wondering if I’ve got that wrong (the green pizza part.) Hmm…
Does Blondie’s or Fat Slice ring a bell? Those were the two where I ate my fair share of slices. Sounds like we were there around the same time!
BLONDIES! thank you! Was green pizza a thing in the bay area around that time? I can’t remember if I ate it there or in Seattle.
We had a Blondie’s in San Francisco, between Market St. and Union Square. Good times. 🙂
I’m dating myself…was at Cal in late 70s and bought many an item from street vendors on Telegraph.
Did you hear that Top Dog is struggling and may close? Once the bars reopen, where will people go??
When I looked at the photo for today’s cp, I knew at once which fragrance I would choose. The dancers’ joyful leaps skyward, the vintage nature of the photo, and its own relevance to my life immediately said: vintage Helena Rubenstein Heaven Sent, a fragrance I wore in my early teens when I was passionate about dance before life came along and changed my life’s direction.
I probably would’ve worn this scent that day when, as a young teen, I was finally given a solo opportunity in my ballet class’s Nutcracker performance. Previously, the daughter of the dance studio‘ s owner ALWAYS got the solos but, thanks to the efforts of my beloved teacher, Miss Carol, it was finally my turn. I’ll never forget that day – Miss Carol did my makeup and hair (ballet bun) and told me I looked just like a young Audrey Hepburn. She instilled so much confidence in me in that moment I lost any fears I had and the recital was a joy – a beautiful memory I’ve always treasured.
The spicy floral/patchouli/oak moss of vintage Heaven Sent (only the HR, not the Dana version) is perfect for today’s cold, snowy weather. But sunshine and warmer temps will finally be on their way beginning tomorrow for the next 7 days. Each afternoon when I step out the door for my walk around the back yard, a large bunny greets me and sits fearlessly less than 2 feet away. I know he’s asking, ‘When will you plant the lettuce?’ And I tell him patiently, ‘Soon, we’re just waiting for this cold weather spell to pass, the garden is all ready for planting the early spring crops, and in the meantime, you’re welcome to join our other visitors to the various feeders and catch whatever you can.’ He then follows me around as I slowly tour the garden, and I wonder if he is heaven sent by Someone to be my garden companion and I am comforted by that.
Hoping you all can find moments of peace, joy, beauty and comfort this weekend as we continue to hunker down together.
What a lovely post, thanks. I adored Helena Rubenstein Heaven Sent back in the day. An article in Seventeen magazine suggested rinsing your hair with diluted cologne to scent it, thereby leaving a “lasting impression,” and Heaven Sent was my choice ?
I’m glad I could spark such a pleasant memory for you today!
There’s a Virginia Woolf quote that I often repeat at the moment: No need to hurry. No need to sparkle. No need to be anybody but oneself.
Have a good weekend and hello to your rabbit!
Thank you, I will say hi to Bunny for you – I must think of a proper name for him. Loved the quote – I imagine we’ll all be finding out quite a bit if what it means to be ‘oneself’ these days.
Do you still dance? We have a group via zoom, want to join us?
Oh, thank you. Although I was fortunate to reincorporate dance back into my adult life, my dance these days is pretty much limited to Zumba, and, fortunately, that is roup and my yoga class have both gone over to Zoom. What would we do without Zoom these days?
what a beautiful memory and perfect choice!
Thank you. And it wouldn’t have happened without the NST Friday community project, I enjoy them so much!
Looking at that photo, I feel cold rather than joyful, so I am getting a jump ? on next weeks poll with the spicy SIP Magazine Street. I have always assumed it was an autumn scent, but it smells works very well on a cold spring day like this when the freshness of vetiver comes to the fore.
The latest in my continuing adventures in bulk procurement is a heavy case of Compact Coreless 2-Ply Recycled Toilet Paper by GP PRO (Georgia-Pacific), 19375, 1000 Sheets Per Roll, 36 Rolls Per Case.
Coreless TP lacks the hollow central tube — it’s all TP all the time!
I guess if I’m not ready for PRO toilet paper by now, I never will be. ?
Nonetheless, I’m praying that my customary extra-soft TP will be back in stock before I run out, and that I can pass this commercial stuff on to my heirs.
Honestly, one of the many reasons I retired was getting fed up with the abominable commercial toilet paper and weird, injurious dispensers that my office had. It was the kind of TP that crumpled into a one-inch width as you pulled it out in order to discourage greedy employees from attempting to use more than one sheet. And the dispensers would bite your hand.
If that doesn’t warrant retirement, I don’t know what would 😉
What kind of evil, ruthless engineer thinks we should only use 1 sheet, anyway?
Guys who do number 2 at home before going to work and only use urinals at the office would be my guess. ?
I decided that staying at home doesn’t mean I have to work. Since my days are extremely busy, I couldn’t just stop – so I officially took a day off. As all parks are closed, and we walk all the trails around where we live every day, today we decided to walk the empty streets in the nearby city (within the allowed distance from our home). In the spirit of the CP, I can even try to do a couple of dance pas while there. But I’m not good with scenting anything, so no perfume participation this week.
Wearing Philosophy Fresh Cream Warm Cashmere: surprisingly good for the price. It’s my recent cheap thrill purchase. I would have never tried this perfume if it weren’t for generous hajusuuri who shared a decant with me a while ago.
Hope you have a lovely day off Undina! Enjoy your walk.
12K steps! I don’t remember when was the last time I managed that many steps before midday.
Wow, good for you! I am lagging so badly today that I will not even tell you the pathetic number of steps I have so far 😉
Ahh good pairing with Mosaic, Robin. One of my ideas was to find something with a concrete or mineral note. But I ended up going with Vol de Nuit parfum. It originally came out in 1933, soon after this photograph was taken, plus it is based on flight, and the dancers are in flight. And it just smells right for the photograph!
I still have to catch up on yesterday’s comments so I probably won’t get to read today’s until tomorrow. So ready for the weekend. Work is nuts right now.
I like your thinking too therabbitsflower!
perfect! 😀
When I look at the photo I see the dancers as the only living there, no flowers or trees, and yet they leap— eyes to the sky, chest to the sun. As if to say “You can cut all the flowers, but you can never keep Spring from coming” (lovingly borrowed from Pablo Neruda). In their honor SotD is Prive by Ormonde Jayne, green and joyful freesia, cuddled into clary sage, and something warm and undefinable.
Nice, I love that line!
Beautiful!
Wearing Les Nereides Patchouli Antique because it’s still below freezing and we have four inches of snow, but it’s supposed to be much warmer tomorrow with sunshine so the snow will be gone. My husband and I had baked potatoes with wilted garlicky spinach and an egg on top for lunch and it might be my new favorite meal, very hot and sustaining. Hang in there everyone.
Your lunch sounds similar to what I made to eat for dinner tonight: twice-baked potatoes, creamed spinach, and garlic butter mushrooms. I’d originally planned baked potatoes in very much the same manner you did yours but decided to split everything up into separate dishes, and do it a la steakhouse dinner (minus the steak.)
Love that Nereides – you smell divine.
Cold, windy, grey day, light snow flurries this morning. I love the photo but not sure what scent goes with it, so I’m wearing 4160 Tuesdays Clouds, named after the Joni Mitchell song. It smells like spring.
Weather twins, almost. I like the sound of your perfume.
Stay warm! The spring is coming.
I chose Jour d’Hermes for the photo – airy and graceful, yet with an energetic edge (in the top notes, at least).
yes! I almost wore Jour today too. 😀
Yes to Hermes! 🙂
indeed! 😉
Oh, I like that.
I love the photo and am starting with Wander which is a carefree perfume but will probably shift to Copper for its burst of energy later. Atrocious weather here. The wind is shredding the golden leaves from the silver birch outside my window and the rain is lashing the windows. I had the strangest dream where first my teeth fell out leaving wire stumps, then my jaw starting falling apart into various-sized meaty fragments that I collected in a tupperware box, and then my skull began to disintegrate and I was trying to hold my head together but it kept slipping through my fingers until I was just a pair of eyes and a bad haircut. It wasn’t at all disturbing though so I guess it was about sex, housework or taking out the compost?
I would love to decipher this dream! I can’t though because I don’t have enough information. I often have dreams where my teeth are falling out. I’ve read that it’s supposed to mean you are keeping a secret. I think in my case though, I’m just afraid of losing more teeth!
Or a game of Mikado ?
Oh that is horrible! I often have dreams of tooth loss or evil dentists but this goes way beyond that!
What a fascinating dream! I like the image of the remaining eyes and haircut.
Kanuka, if I had that dream I would probably not get up at all the next day! And I certainly would never take the compost out again.
Well, that is quite a dream. Lately I’ve had dreams about eating too much cake and being pregnant (not at the same time). Fascinating how the subconscious comes up with such things.
SL Un Bois Vanille today.
The Blue Bridge Parkway is the latest victim to succumb to the Coronavirus lock down. ?
50% of the facility I work at is basically closed. So, all those that staff these departments are being called off. Despite this, we are still working short on the open units. I worked as a CNA last shift because they are so short. Nurses were maxed out patient wise and I had TWENTY patients as a CNA. They will not bring in staff to try to alleviate the shortage and help on the open units. This whole medical system is going to implode…so crazy!
I was making Nanaimo Bars today for the first time to take into work, but halfway through, I lost all heart and just put everything back in the fridge. Sorry co-workers, no treats for you today..?
I hope you can ride this wave, Deva. It sounds a very tough situation.
May you soon have some rest again with T-Rex.
That sounds tough ?
Take care ?
Sorry to read of your struggles, hope it gets better for you soon. Yesterday our local news radio station featured an interview with a travel nurse from Bolingbrook that made me think of you. I forgot where she was temporarily working for several months but she detailed conditions much like yours, so difficult. Drove the Blue Ridge Parkway with azaleas in full bloom once years ago, one of my favorite travel memories.
How weird is it that I was born and raised in Bolingbrook….or have we talked about that? I can’t remember anything anymore…??
I believe you mentioned your origins once upon a time. I am a native southsider and have many friends/family members who moved to the Bolingbrook/Darien area when it was first developed, so I’m very familiar with it and that’s why I remembered where you were said you were originally from.
That’s just so stupid.
Just unconscionable.
What a bizarre and nonsensical situation. We are having severe staffing shortages in Quebec at the nursing homes. Not surprisingly, people are not willing to risk their lives for $20,000 a year in places that are hotbeds of infection due to vulnerable populations. The premier has promised salary increases going forward, but in the meantime they have called for volunteers from retired medical personnel and thousands have answered the call. The irony is we had a large budget surplus last year and nothing was done about this situation, which has been known for many years.
Participating in Papillon Salome. The photo is vintage but looks modern; Salome is modern but smells vintage.
I’ve had kind of a ridiculously productive day, doing not the things I’d planned to do, but the things I feel compelled to do. Sometimes I feel like one of the women in the Masterpiece series Home Fires, except that rather than joining a communal wartime effort, we’re all at home alone making enough jam to defend against armageddon and furiously washing our hands to stave off Hitler’s war planes.
My husband will (apparently – we’ll see, I guess) return to work 2 weeks from Monday, according to the big boss at his work site. The whole idea of this is very stressful on so many levels. But it’s also been really nice having him around and doing things together every day, so I’m pretty bummed out that that part of things is coming to an end. (And by that, I do mean “having him around” to make pancakes for breakfast on a Wednesday morning. When’s that ever gonna happen again?)
Be well, all.
You smell beautiful today. Maybe when your husband retires he’ll make pancakes for you? How long you’ll have to wait is another story. ?
Fail at the project today. I was planning to wear California Reverie, but forgot this morning. I put on Ambre Muscadin and I’m not really digging it. I’m really worn out today, grocery shopping’s gonna have to wait till tomorrow.
Friday is in-office for me so I’m not oversprayed. I plan to correct that deficiency when I get home with some lHeure Bleu.
Happy Friday!
ooooooh, L’Heure Bleue is lovely. I need to wear it again one day soon.
Oh! California Reverie would have worked well for the CP. didn’t even think of it…
I typed out a comment, and when I hit the post button it just vanished! It was hardly earth-shattering, so the world is not much diminished by its absence 🙂
Anyway, I’m starting Saturday with Papillon Perfumes Angélique.
I am so sorry!
Crazy Friday for me. I started the day late, and seem to have been playing catch up all afternoon. Plus, I now have had a personal task become a “must do”, as opposed to a “nice to have”. Bleah.
SOTD = Tauer L’Air du Desert Morocain, from the sample stash. The incense and smoke in it fit the soaring aspects of the picture (after all, smoke rises into the air like the dancers), while the vanilla and amber fit my need for a cozy, cuddly comfort scent. So, two tasks taken care of with one perfume! LAdDM is just that good!
If I’d had some LAdDM, it’s what I’d have worn as well. The photograph = movement, and to me, LAdDM is all about movement. Enjoy! Hope your evening is more relaxing.
excellent photo-fragrance pairing! laddm is art 😉
After weeks without wearing perfume I finally sprayed some Frangipani because someone wore it yesterday. It was wonderful and really helped my day so thank you.
Love the picture, ballet classes via zoom are helping me cope with this situation.
How are you doing? I seem to remember that you are in Spain. I hope things start changing for the better for you in the near future.
And you smell lovely. Frangipani is such an uplifting perfume.
Hello! I still have your beautiful postcard!
Things are tough here in Spain, just living the present, which is not so bad.
I’m sure we will have better times, but nothing will be the same I think.
My children are happy, we are healthy so we’re doing fine! Hope you are well too and that your sister in law is a little better.
Wearing Lush Kerbside Violet today. I’m not sure if it’s cp compliant, but I’m getting a bit of a concrete undertone. I even put on makeup; first time in a month!
Just got back from a grocery shop. I have to say that I was a bit surprised to notice that the older folks weren’t recognizing the 6 foot rule. We had a guy walking up behind us in one of the rows, then continued right past, carrying his bag of flour in hand; not sure what else he was looking for but he kept following us at a close distance. Finally, I did shout out “6 foot rule”! Another older couple cut right in front of us with their cart while we were in the refrigerator section! Seriously, people!
The Oreo cookie talk yesterday had me on high-alert. I noticed a Tiramisu flavor while we were out today. I thought they were on sale, so I picked up 2 packs. When finally home to check the receipt, turns out they were $12.00 for both ?. They better be good!
better be solid gold good for that price! 😀
I loved the pistachio oreos, I don’t dare buy more.
Wearing the always-cheery 4160’s Who Knew? Also took a longish walk down to the water, which I hadn’t seen in a month, and that was very restorative.
I just finished a long walk around my neighborhood. Walking by the water is wonderful, and I miss it. I’ll have to try tomorrow! 😉
SotD = La Chasse aux Papillons
The moment I saw today’s photo I thought of La Chasse, for me it’s the smell of full-on joy. And visually the dancers’ arms and legs create angles that make me think of butterflies in the air.
It’s spring break here (whatever that means since school has been “dismissed” since mid-March). My personal challenge for the week has been to engage in familiar art forms and handcrafts in a different way. Last night and this morning I’ve been painting white paper with watercolors, cutting it into squares, then folding more origami butterflies.
Photo-fragrance pairings on Friday alway make me smile. I love the art-perfume pairs too. Frangraces are a sensual pleasure, but they are often about mood, enhancing a feeling, challenging assumptions, opening the mind. Just as all forms of the arts do.
Happy FriYAYYAYAYAYAYAYAY! We made it through to another one. Let’s keep on keepin’ on. The love of beauty is our superpower, and the world needs heroes more than ever.
Now I’m going for a walk to enjoy the sunshine and breeze.
Hugs to everyone, and scented air kisses too.
I think the butterfly connection is a nice one!
thank you, Calypso! 😀
Late to the party. I didn’t have time to this about this week’s CP but I chose Gris Montaigne because I thought it matched the overall tone of the picture.
Nice, thoughts on GM?
I love it. It’s hard to describe. Rose and patch but so much more.
Gris Montaigne is so beautiful, and I would say graceful. Perfect cp match!
I see the obvious to me, silver, airiness, grace, flight. Would pair it with Maison Violet Tanagra. However I’m smelling remnants of Elevator Music on my sweater.
I must need some Maison Violet Tanagra!
Nothing yet, but I’m sure I’ll put on some fragrance at bedtime. I had a pretty successful shopping trip to Aldi’s in the afternoon, immediately followed by a relatively fast stop at our local Giant grocery store. It started to snow a bit right after we got home. The snow soon changed over to cold rain. I didn’t get into doing yard work, just quickly dashed out to cut a ‘Prince of Austria’ tulip to enjoy inside. That’s a red (or red-orange) tulip that’s very fragrant.
I’d picked up spring flowers on clearance at the Giant — an Easter lily, and hyacinths in colors I didn’t have. Mom complained that I had enough flowers for the season. My private reasoning was that I was saving myself from ordering too many spring-blooming bulbs in the fall. Will that work? Odds against, I think. (lol) Oh, well.
I’ve ordered some spring and summer-blooming flowers from Old House Gardens, Logee’s, and Direct Gardening. The companies will ship the bulbs and plants when it’s safe for them to. Frivolous shopping, but it kept me off the streets and out of trouble. (lol)
I’m late for various reasons. I’m having extremely irregular sleep due to stress I suppose. Anyway woke up super late and got coffee enough for a Zoom meeting with Mom’s assisted living center director and the education/entertainment guy, plus family members . They’re doing a great job! He announces Bingo as each resident plays from the open doorway of their rooms. That image made me smile. They are scheduling iPad Zoom meetings for all of us with moms for Mother’s Day. It’s so considerate for people,ex who can’t remember to charge their phones or manage to use them. Makes me tear up. Then I had an adventurous outing to the grocery store—my first in three weeks! It left me exhausted. I went way overboard buying fresh veggies but now I’m so excited!

Plus I bought a gorgeous salmon fillet at the little fish market yesterday. Dinner tonight will be delicious! And Bosch the detective new season is on! Yay.!
I forgot perspective, duh. I’m still in Amouage and went back to Love Mimosa from two days ago. I said then it was cheerful but lacked depth. Boy was I wrong. This thing slowly develops and changes and just gets more rich and gorgeous! Ylang Ylang and other things—I can’t describe it well. It is nuclear, lasts 24 hours or more. If you sleep in it you will be so happy when you catch it on your wrist in the morning. I’m in total love and want that yellow bottle with a passion!
I have heard several nice comments about Love Mimosa, will give it a sniff next time I get a chance.
Very late here but I couldn’t fall asleep. Was wearing Nuxe Prodigieux le Parfum which lasted all day, and this evening Repetto EDT to participate in the CP as Repetto is a French ballet shoe maker, very pretty fruity floral.
I hope you get to sleep in late.
Thank you Lillyjo, yes I was able to stay in bed this morning as it is Saturday.
