Wednesday scent of the day 4/8

Posted by Robin on 8 April 2020 307 Comments

Another Blursday, plus Jacques Brel's birthday. RIP John Prine and Bucky Pizzarelli. What fragrance are you wearing?

This morning's pick from the Hermès drawer: Rose Ikebana.

Reminder: 4/10 is Siblings Day. Wear two fragrances that might be siblings, or wear one and tell us about the other, or wear a fragrance that your sibling wears, or interpret this project in any way you like.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Scent of 6am was TDC Santo Incienso Sillage Sacré. Sample thunked. Not my cup of tea since it smells masculine on me.
Now I am wearing Naomi Goodsir Bois D’Ascese. More smoke and less incense than I was expecting. I am ok with it, but once the sample is gone I will not miss it.

Cool, grey, rainy day. Coffee to the rescue. Stay well NSTers!

I didn’t love, but it was ok. Just too masculine on me. But I finished it! ?

I was going to ask which Gucci by Gucci the one with brown juice or the one with the brown bottle? Realized either way, you smell fantastic ?

Brown bottle. Brown juice one in the hefty glass was thunked about 20; years ago LOL ?
I have to say that I was planning on saving this bottle for fall/winter but I tested it last night in the warm evening and it smelled amazing! No guava or patchouli in the heat but rather a creamy tiara flecked honeyed musk. I find my skin does better with cold weather fragrances in the heat. Another reason for me to wear Winter Woods ( and now this one) in the summer.
If we ever get back to work it will be a safe to wear to work fragrance.

Interesting! I’m going to put some of it on later and see if I get tiare flower. It’s usually pretty fruity/patchouli on me.

Tresor, from my new 1oz bottle. Oldie but goodie. Thanks for the kind words yesterday, it’s been a bluey week in general, for several reasons.

After seeing that Demeter ad for PBnJ..I definitely will he having a sandwich today lol. Perhaps a toasted one. Mmm:)

It cooled here a bit..chance of rain is likely.

Anyone recommend a good incense line/scent?

You smell great! Tresor has been a staple in my collection for many years!

I am doing a week of incense and may continue for a couple of more weeks, just in case you want to check. I love Comme des Garcons Incense Series, being Avignon my favorite from the line.

I will join in a while with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I am curious now about the Demeter scent. I will try it if I see it later at any store.

Love a PB&J :) I recommend the incense line from Commes des Garcons too, Kyoto being my favorite, but CdG has other incense perfumes that I really like: CdG 2, Blue Encens, Black. Etro Shaal Nur, Hermes Un Jardin Sur le Nil, SSS Incense Pure, YSL Nu are others that come to mind and I’m sure there are more. Happy hunting!

Great incense suggestions! So many perfumistas say Un Jardin sur le Nil has a great incense note, however I cannot smell it at all. I wonder if the note is more noticeable in colder weather. I usually wear it during late spring and summer time.

      Good suggestions already mentioned above

      Id like to add:
My sotd: Messe de minuit (see below)
Bois d’encens, by Armani, expensive but seriously good

If you dont mind using attars: Incense royale and Nankun Kodo by Sultan Pasha Attars

      Also:
Fille en Aiguilles, Serge lutens (it also smells like pine and other stuff, but incense is prominent)

I must congratulate the USA for inventing the PB&J – it is marvellous!

I’m reading Maurice by EM Forster atm and it’s wonderful.

I am going to have a bath in my rituals – Sakura cherry blossom bath in honour of the blossom at our window but I am currently commando.

As to sibling scents, my sister buys something new every time.
She was wearing D and G the only one recently. Chocolate gourmand as I recall. Unfortunately, I’m not sure when I’ll next get to see her. A lot of us are in the same boat I’m sure.

I’ll probably wear Lolita lempicka for her as its the only gourmand I own.

Following in hajusuuri’s footsteps — or better, sillage — with SSS Rose Volupte. Appropriate for the vintage pocket watch browsing I am doing on ebay. How amazing is it that one could acquire a watch from the 1700s for less than $1,000?

Anxiety is entirely justified now, and I’m it’s unabated.

One thing I do when anxiety is bad is to make lists of all the things worrying me, jot down things I can do to prepare or cope better with each of them, and then do a task or two. Getting things on paper gets them out of my head to some extent and makes them seem a bit more manageable.

If you have a foam roller or even just want to stack/roll up some stuff to approximate one, it can be very relieving and passively relaxing to just lay tummy-up on the foam roller so it’s supporting your upper back and head, and put your arms out to the sides palms-up, Jesus style, for about 10 minutes to decontract the chest muscles!

Circus artists get this exercise recommended all the time because so many of us overwork that area and despite it not being “intense” it really helps!

      Sorry for the stress!

SOTM is MFK Aqua Celestia, sprayed with abandon. It may or may not last to noon – I’m experimenting, seeing if copious sprayings give it increased longevity. In any event, it’s very pretty and should last to at least the beginning of my zoom pilates session this morning. I ❤️ Olene, too!

I was trying to find a reference for something I think I remember but could be a trick of the mind, namely, that Beyonce used to ask her housekeeper to have Olene candles burning throughout the house when she came home.

What I found was this 2009 Diptyque time capsule on a style blog that appears to have stopped updating in 2013:

Hello friends, I smell wonderful this morning in Passage d’Enfer. I will be all out of this beauty in just a few more uses :( which is sad because it was one of my very first perfume loves.

Thanks to everyone who suggested I stop trying to keep up with the personal projects while also still working and dealing with Coronavirus stress! I had a bit of a breakdown last night (you know, lying flat on my back on the floor crying), which reminds me that doing a Yoga with Adriene video each morning is perhaps insufficient for my mental health. Sending positive vibes to you all. Stay well, friends!

It’s important to let yourself have those breakdowns, and let it all out. Sometimes you’ve gotta cry and lie on the floor.

Koyel, I m with missionista. Sometimes you just need to lie on the floor and cry. “Tears in my ears” as a poem by . . . someone . . . has it. But I do hope the feelings lift a little. It is extremely hard in these times.

It was a song written by Harold Barlow. From wikipedia:

“Harold Barlow (15 May 1915, Boston, Massachusetts – 15 February 1993, Manhasset, Long Island, New York) was an American songwriter, and later a consultant on plagiarism.

He studied violin at the University of Boston, graduating in 1937.

His song “The Things I Love” (1941) was recorded by Jimmy Dorsey, Dizzy Gillespie and Harry James. He served in World War II as a bandleader. Probably his best-known song was “I’ve Got Tears in My Ears” (1949) recorded by Homer and Jethro. He also wrote the English lyrics for “Mama”, best known as a 1960 hit song for Connie Francis.”

First line of the lyrics goes: “I’ve got tears in my ears from lyin’ on my back in my bed while I cry over you”

It’s possible I have too much time on my hands. :)

Omg laying on the floor crying is totally a reasonable coping mechanism too sometimes!

I’ve regularly had at least one big old cry per week for the past several weeks, I think my body needs to just express that anxiety sometimes.

It still sucks though, and I’m sorry! Hope that today feels a little bit better.

I’m in l’Elephant today and am completely lacking any kind of motivation. Plenty to do, but no will to do a single thing. Maybe T-Rex and I will just spend the day snuggled on the couch…

Feeling for the nurses in Detroit who walked out due to unsafe staffing ratios. I wonder if they are part of a union? Amazing how administration can find agency nurses after something like this, but couldn’t find any prior to the walkout.

Also read that many people are dying at home, and therefore “in hospital” deaths are decreasing, leading to false decreasing death trends. In reality the overall death rate is going up, because people are dying at home and are left out of the data…

Yeah, Deva, I have to say at this point I believe nothing I read, as the lack of testing and the lack of proper recording of deaths makes everything feel unreliable. So the flying blind just continues. And the lack of proper protection for health care workers and others is infuriating. Not sure how to stay motivated in the situation.

I’m amazed how unsupportive some institutions are STILL during this time.
My own facilities has a 60% reduction in staff from sick calls. I think had they been more supportive and provided masks earlier on, they could have avoided this. They gave 2 new hires (new grads!) a 2 day orientation and sent them to work at our smaller satellite facility ?

This is precisely what saved me 3+ weeks ago, several days after France (where we live) went into “confinement” (aka strict stay in your house regulations). I’d been gobbling news and started spiralling. Put myself on a strict no news regime, and boy, the difference. Can’t avoid it entirely, and my son and husband still read/listen to/watch everything. But it’s a bit muffled for me. And that makes all the difference. I can’t recommend it highly enough as a very very effective coping strategy!

The recording i got was the number was either disconnected or the number changed, so I don’t know. I texted his dad to see what happened but haven’t received a reply. My friend is in a group home and I wonder if he ran afoul with his dad with the cell phone and had it taken away.

    SOTD Fiori di Capri

    Anakreon 570 BC

    Weaving a garland long ago,
    somehow I found Eros
    there among the roses

I clutched him by this wings
    and thrust him into wine
    and drank him quickly

    And ever since, deep inside,
I feel the wings of Eros
    gently tickling

Started out with a spritz of Ta’if, but it was not doing it for me this AM. Needed a bomb. Am now in By Killian’s Amber Oud, which I must have inherited from someone? Anyway, it works.

In the poetry vein, will pass along some lyrics from one of the greatest songs:

    Make me an angel
    That flies from Montgomery
    Make me a poster
    Of an old rodeo
    Just give me one thing
That I can hold on to
    To believe in this livin’
Is just a hard way to go

Caleche Eau Delicate for a run to the drug store in some of my oldest, scruffiest clothes. At least I smell groomed (and expensive). Whenever I wear this, I think of the Upper East Side character in “The Nanny Diaries”. As though someone who is waifishly thin and wearing a twin set and pearls should be wearing this. Instead of me!

I have some nice carded samples from Ormonde Jayne and I liked Champaca the best but noticed it had a haunting familiarity. Since we are talking about perfume siblings, Calvin Klein Truth is closely related. It is that bamboo note. So maybe one brother lives in London and is introspective and a botanist, Champaca, and the other brother lives in LA and dresses movie and tv show sets with plants, Calvin Klein Truth.

It’s raining here, and work is still non-stop. I selected 10 Corso Como today, and it’s turning out to be perfect. Y’all probably understand that really great feeling when you spritz on a perfume, and it feels exactly right for your mood, your need, your outfit, your outlook, and your day ahead. Love that.

lillyjo, if you’re still online today, send me a holla at lisadarty in the land of the haute mayle. You were asking about Le Bain, so I’m gonna send you some!

Good morning all! Not much of the morning left however. I’m in Orris Tattoo from a sample vial I dumped all over myself. The earthiness reminds me of ISM.
Took the dog for a walk on this muggy, cloudy day. Will probably top off the OT with ISM soon. So, cp points for me!

I haven’t had much perfume mojo these days, but enjoying my scented products in the shower. My hair still smells a little like Lust Jungle today, which my husband says smells like patchouli.
I’m also worried about connecting some of my most worn perfumes to this time period. I’ve ruined some perfumes for myself in the past this way.
But, am wearing OJ Frangipani today, because I love it. Sister scent on my hand is Lolita Lempicka Elle L’Aime which is decidedly sweeter and synthetic smelling. Don’t hate it, but don’t love it.
Current nightly binge watching is Good Girls, which a friend recommended. Took me a few episodes to get into it, but it’s a fun watch.

I realized that I responded to some comments but didn’t post my sotd, which is L’Artisan Seville l’Aube, I love it so much. Having been in a state of torpor interspersed with flashes of panic for a few days, today is sunny and mild and I’m cleaning the house (except when I take a break and end up back on the internet again.) I absolutely hate to clean so I’m listening to my high school rock playlist really, really loud. It’s helping.

Completely off CP today but my blind buy of Bis Rodin Olio Lusso (thanks eBay! Less than ⅓ of retail price) arrived today and after spraying the cello sealed perfume box with disinfectant, I couldn’t resist.

It is nothing like the description, but I love it. It’s marketed as a “classic green-violet-orris” and on me so far it’s intensely lavender, anise and jasmine with that nice ambergris base. I wanted it for the ambergris note and had heard the description didn’t reflect most people’s impression, so not disappointed. It does still give a very vintage impression.

Also happy because my other two lavender decants/samples – New Haarlem from Bond No 9 and Mon Guerlain – both felt a bit overwhelming on me. This one is just right!

Lavender and vanilla on my skin seem to turn into a banshee – they yell VERY loudly when they’re together ?

The coffee in New Haarlem actually did reappear later in the night, after some of the banshee effect had worn off, and then that combined with the vanilla and tonka I can understand why some people said they got a maple syrupy note.

I don’t take sugar in my coffee so while that part of the development was more comfortable for me, it doesn’t scratch any particular itch.

I just reapplied ELdO’s Remarkable People for the third time – we’re in the 80s, so perfume is fleeting. Not a problem though, because I can commute into the other room to re-spritz pretty much whenever I want.

I started buying rollerballs in January because I could never reapply spray perfume during the day while teaching but could manage a quick roll. I didn’t think I was going to miss the hectic and rigid school schedule but I do. I’m a little bit worried about how I’ll react when we’re on Spring Break next week and I’ll have no scheduled obligations. I suspect I’ll feel untethered.

Happy Passover to everyone celebrating. Biggest hugs to all who are not able to be with those they would usually celebrate with.

Yep! I love your choice of images. I sometimes wonder how people from say a few centuries ago would perceive today’s world.
Like wise I often wonder how people back in the day perceived and appreciated those old literary masterpieces.

I just felt really silly. I had worked out after about 15 minutes that the connection was fine as I could still use my phone. I then started looking for the box I keep in my attic with all sorts of telecom wires, plugs and what have you, when lo and behold I discovered a manual of my modem and another explaining (for dummies) about how to install ADSL. So I then proceeded to reconnect my computer to the world outside by pressing the WLAN button. It feels like a major achievement.

My brother loves scents but has awful taste and oversprays. Probably because he is (unfortunately) a smoker. So I won’t be emulating him on Friday. Incidentally, he has many other very fine qualities!
Bonus for today—Gorgeous gardenias. It’s BWF time here with jasmine vines, big magnolia trees, and gardenia hedges all bursting into bloom! The air is soft, muggy, and fragrant!

The jasmine just outside the kitchen window is in full flower and, with the back door open, that heavenly fragrance is rolling through the house. Amazing!

I’m in Masque Milano Russian Tea. It opens all mint and pepper and tea tea tea, and then somehow a rising fruity raspberry blends with it all. It’s a funny perfume. Intellectually I don’t love it, but I sure enjoy it when I wear it. A beloved kindred spirit friend gifted a big bottle to me, so perhaps associations with her a part of why I incline towards it. It was a very warm day in Bordeaux today, so the mint was pleasantly refreshing. It is, in fact, a refreshing perfume!

Happy Passover to everyone who celebrates! Ordinarily we would probably be at a low key seder with local friends. But not this year.

    Stay safe, everyone.

It’s a very lovely perfume and I really appreciate the mint (which I think is a very difficult note to pull off well). I like it a lot! But it can’t hold a candle to my beloved Romanza (also MM)! I think l’Attesa is the powdery one? Is that right? I need to revisit that one. & I can’t remember what Lucia ed Ombre is like. Gosh, once confinement is over I’m sensing a Masque Milano spree.

    1. The sound of snow shushing off tree branches when cross country skiing through a forest
    2. The sound of rain pelting down on a mirror-glass lake around dusk ( or at least in gloom)
    3. The sound of grasshoppers when they are springing from snow grass high up in the mountains
    4. The absolute, void of sikence on the McMurdo Ice Shelf
    5. The sound of my dog shaking vigorously, from head to tail tip, after getting wet during a walk
    6. The chorus of birds in the valley during late spring from my deck

Pretty nice eh? The spriffffff of perfume to get me out of bed: Daim Blond

Last night we had a heck of a thunderstorm. I woke up to chirping birds and thought that this is my favorite sound in nature. It’s like they are saying get up! It’s going to be a great day!
You smell great in Daim Blond ??

Great list! Yesterday I walked in a neighborhood that has huge old live oaks where large water birds come to nest every spring. It’s an odd phenomenon here in the heart of the city. There must be hundreds of them. People tend to jog or walk dogs there or ride bicycles with their kids. I was taking bird photos. Usually we hear traffic noise from nearby streets and a big freeway. It was so quiet at around six yesterday that I could hear the whoosh of wings as these giant birds took off. They are herons and Great Egrets and have an enormous wingspan, four or five feet. That whooshing noise was utterly magical to me, something I’ve never heard before.

How cool Calypso, we had a great heron in our yard and I know that sound, aren’t they the coolest birds.? They feel prehistoric. And their squawks sound like it too.
A whole tree must have been a symphony.

    Heads up, NST.

Today sucked, and I am gonna gripe about it for a little bit. Mr. Jalapeno had an accident with a utility knife (some folks call them box cutters), and I had to drive him to Urgent Care. He dropped the sharp pointy on his foot. He’s OK now, with 4 stitches in the foot, a tetanus shot, and an antibiotic ointment. That was some excitement that I sure could have done without.

SOTD = back in Chanel No. 19 Poudre. I think I need a bigger better “armor” scent if the rest of my week is gonna be like today was.

Thanks lillyjo. The Urgent Care facility had people calling in first, before allowing them inside. I was waiting outside in the truck. I’m thankful that the injury didn’t require a hospital visit.

What kind of creeped me out was Mr. Jalapeno saying that the actual injury didn’t hurt when it happened. But really sharp blades can do that all too easily.

OMG. I hope you confiscated the actual box cutter? No more box cutters until they have a vaccine developed!!

(And I just yelled at my husband earlier today because first he said I should not go to the store at all this week to be extra safe, then he went outside and started cutting boards with the stupid circular saw thingie that he suspends between 2 sawhorses. Honestly. )

Ouch! Hope Mr. Jalapeno is doing all right, and that your nerves are calmer.

Reminds me of finding out a few years ago while cleaning the blades of Felco # 2 pruning shears that the blades actually were razor-sharp. The ED physician’s assistant thought that a stitch in my thumb would be a bit of overkill, and managed to close the cut with butterfly bandages.

But I totally do things like that every so often. I seldom do the same exact thing twice, though.

    Late to the party …

SOTD = Atelier des Ors Choeur des Anges

… from a sample. It is creamsicle, with similarities to Guerlain Neroli Outrenoir.

I have a Scented Samples subscription from Indigo Perfumery and this one came with the March set. I just re-upped for another 6 months. Can’t beat the $60 6-month rate (or you can try it for 1 month at a time for $12). It’s a good way to try new niche fragrances without having to shlep anywhere.

If you don’t want sad, please stop reading now.

I just got a text today that one of my fellow travelers to Houston died of COVID-19. She was a very spright 80+ retired lawyer. She did not feel well as soon as we returned to NJ on March 13, had surgery 3 weeks ago (which would have been the week after we returned) for a gastrointestinal blockage…don’t really know how well she got out of that surgery but must have contracted COVID-19 while in the hospital … and died today . She has a very small family but regardless, it must have been devastating. She is the first person I personally know who died of COVID-19. ?. If you’re wondering if I’m worried about being infected from that trip, I would say no considering the elapsed time.
