Wednesday scent of the day 2/26

Posted by Robin on 26 February 2020 267 Comments

It's Hump Day and Pistachio Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am still out of town and still commando. (I will be home Friday and wearing a unicorn perfume.)

Reminder: 2/28 will be Unicorn Friday...wear a perfume you suspect no one else (or almost no one else) on Now Smell This owns, or something that you very rarely see worn or mentioned. Suggested by Oakland Fresca.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Good morning! I am unicorning it up in La Haie Fleurie. I know some of you must own this! But I needed a good strong dose of jasmine today.

You smell amazing! It is not a unicorn, but a lovely jasmine.

Yes, it must be lured from the woods by a virgin holding a sprig of jasmine in one hand and a mug of root beer in the other.

Do you think it smells a little like root beer? I feel this so strongly but as yet have not found anyone who agrees.

No I don’t think it smells like root beer, although my oldest bottle (turquoise bottle that says Jean Laporte on it) does smell a little different than the ones that only say L’Artisan

SOTD is Baruti Chai. I have not seen any Baruti scents in the comments.
It is a black tea fragrance. I can also smell spices, smoky notes and animalic notes. Rich and warm. I must admit that while I appreciate this perfume, I am not in love with it. But it is definitely worth trying if you are into tea scents.

I had high hopes for that one, but I found it to be quite acrid. I was expecting it to have some milky sweetness, but I can see big fans of tea scents enjoying it.

I would say it a savory tea scent, not a sweet one. And it keeps transforming in a weird way on my wrists – there was a warm floral phase I enjoyed greatly, but now I am getting bitter black tea. Strange fragrance.

I needed a break today from the classic heavy hitters I have been wearing this week. Back to them tomorrow.

Thanks to Koyel my SOTD is The Harmonist Matrix Metal. Sample thunked! Beautiful and comfy incense perfume that some of you must have, but I have not seen in the comments yet. Perfect for a grey, rainy, but not so busy day at work.

    Happy Wednesday everyone!

STD = VCA Bois d’Iris, far far from a unicorn here in NST. I get comments about how unusual and interesting this perfume is from others, which suggests that it is different than what most people smell most of the time…
I am starting to think I need a new Iris in my collection – maybe time to spring for a FB of Iris Silver Mist, but what else is out there that is a fabulous Iris perfume?

Nothing more fabulous than Iris Silver Mist, but Masque Milano L’Atessa is the second best in my humble opinion.

Love les Carottes by Honoré des Prés is fun.
Iris Nazarena is another excellent iris and apparently Iris Cendré by Naomi Goodsir is very much worth a try as well.
I haven’t tried L’Attesa, I find Masque Milano a tad too expensive, but I have heard mostly fans on this and other fragrance forums.
I also like Heeley’s Iris de Nuit, Goutal’s Heure Exquise, Chanel La Pausa.

Iris Cendre is carroty and incensy. Luca Turin said it is the nearest thing to a replacement for the “gutted ISM”.
I also think Nuit Etoilee has a very polished iris once one gets past the pennyroyal in the opening. And I wear Bas de Soie regularly – Eaumg has a review of it that echoes my feelings.

I like D&S Durga’s Iris (which I think is called Grey Lady or Bearded Grey Lady) a cool medicinal Iris but no as intensely medicinal as Iris Silver Midst.
I also like, a different take on Iris, the Prada Infusion D’Iris.

How about PdE Equitris and Le Cri? I have been on an Iris hunt too. I have found many that are interesting, including Violet Ida. I think that there is ALOT of up front Iris in VC&A’s Moonlight Patchouli and I really love that one. Ilike BdI but MP is more loud, so I went fb on that one. I don’t have much in front of me so I am working from memory mostly.
This Christmas is will be all about a fb of No. 19 EdP for me.
I am done fighting the feeling. Life is too short, Wear the shoes AND the Perfume.

I couldn’t figure out what mood I was in this morning, so I grabbed a couple from my untried samples: Atelier Cologne Iris Rebelle on one hand and Elizabeth and James French Gray on the other. Certainly no unicorns here.

Does anyone have any thoughts or resources about how to tell if perfume has gone bad? I have a couple of bottles (a three year old Lush Vanillary and a … seven? or eight? year old Cartier Baiser Vole) that smell absolutely dominated by white musk. It’s possible they’ve always been like that and my nose has developed, or I notice it more because my lifestyle has changed some, but is it also possible the non-white-musk materials have degraded over time? Nothing smells “off” about either otherwise.

Usually my perfumes that have gone off smell like celery/dirty vase water (florals) or gasoline (ouds). Just smelling musk doesn’t sound like it’s turned.

D2 Santal Blanc. This one has nuclear strength and does not shower off. It only disapperared after I swam my 40 x 25m laps and spent 5 mins in the steamroom. So today, only on clothes.
I am constantly worried about CoVid19 and our travel plans. We’re supposed to fly out in 3 weeks, and have a connecting flight in the Middle East. Strange times. No one wants to arrive for a holiday, only to be quarantined for two weeks or confined to a hotel. I see numerous hotels had been shut down – in France and in Spain.

If I had vacation plans, I would cancel them. I do have to fly back to Montreal from San Diego on April 10th, but that is a flight back to my home so if I get quarantined it’s not going to be spoiling an expensive holiday.

It seems brutal, but I’m kind of leaning that way too. Just don’t know whether the travel insurance will pay for costs incurred, unless there is a travel ban or some such in place.

They need to build an overpass. This intersection has a long and bloody history. If I was a staff person, you would not be able to shut me up. But everyone’s afraid to rock the boat here.

Not a unicorn whatsoever, but am in the lovely Cedre Sambac. I can’t stop sniffing myself.

I’ll have to pull from my sample stash to find something I haven’t seen mentioned here much. Not sure what I’ll come up with.

this is a nursery rhyme, right?
So interesting how some tunes are found everywhere, but others not so much.

I grew up learning the Dutch version of ba ba black sheep.

But this song…i dont know, (my nephews and niece sing stuff like the wheels on thr bus and baby shark ?? )

We could use our own ‘rain rain go away’ variant though ?

I thought I could manage the rain allright, esp. we were in need of some serious water. But this weather is pushing it. I’ve had enough, but it looks like we are going to have quite a bit more water in the days to come.

      Vanilla twins!

Random PSA–I just ordered more vanilla (I use it by the gallon in my oatmeal) from my favorite purveyor, Vanilla Saffron Imports in SF. My Madagascar vanilla extract arrived last week and I cannot stop opening it to give it a sniff. It is gorgeous. I have even dabbed it on my wrist in the feeble hope the scent will last more that three minutes. NO affiliation!

Well, I had another unicorn perfume in mind for today and thought I knew where my bottle was but couldn’t find it this morning. While searching, I came across another unicorn that I quickly settled on. It’s Sweet Anthem Poppy, a brand that I never see mentioned here. Poppy is the only 30ml I bought, though I do have quite a few of their 10mls. I don’t keep up with them anymore since Meredith Smith sold the brand about 4 years ago, but I love the more quirky ones she did: Poppy, Petra, Briar Rose, and Joan among them. Poppy was described as: “Spicy clove dripping with cocoa, smoky opium and Turkish musk with a motley crew of red flowers – a saffron-stained carnation among them.” It’s so good though probably a little too strong for the office.

Oh! Thanks for mentioning those – I bought several after Kevin reviewed Juliet and haven’t pulled them out for years. I wonder if Poppy is among them – it sounds great! Meredith was such a sweetheart – like you I haven’t followed the brand since she left.

Just one spritz of another Bendel unicorn. Orange Blossom and Jasmine. Spraying lightly because I have to go to. WW workshop and always worry about potential fuss pots…. Will likely spray on more when I get back.or might seek a different unicorn…

Tired. Was just about to head to bed last night when a huge crash happened outside our building across the street. Looked out as people were running toward a cab driven up into the sidewalk against the corner building with a pickup up against it. Two people left by ambulance, but thankfully seemed to be minor…one likely from airbag deploying. So…took awhile for that adrenaline to settle down. (A witness said cab tried to beat the light….)

Big PSA for those who take them…wear seatbelts in cabs!! Always. Always.

I smell like a vanilla cupcake with a ginormous dollop of vanilla icing on top– in Acqua e Zucchero by Profumum Roma. The notes include orange blossom and berries. Faggedaboudit! This is vanilla cupcake through and through. I own a travel-size spray of this one, and it is definitely one of my guilty pleasures.

    Musical accompaniment:

    Ice ice baby Vanilla
    Ice ice baby Vanilla
    Ice ice baby Vanilla
    Ice ice baby Vanilla

(Under pressure . . . Can’t we give ourselves one more chance?)

Today is another day off for me (my swap for working President’s Day).
No SOTD yet as I just showered, but will figure out what to wear in a bit. I’m thinking Satori for calm…
Our drumming ensemble is participating in a collaboration with other artists and musicians at an opening reception for an artist’s exhibit at the Bronx Museum of Art later today. Feeling a little intimidated as a very-nonprofessional, and also don’t really know what we’re doing, lol. We have a 3 hour rehearsal before the event.
I’m mostly excited because we’ll be accompanying Arto Lindsay (from the Lounge Lizards) who has samba riffs in his songs (we’ll be playing his rendition of Prince’s Erotic City). We’ll see, and even if I chicken out, the event sounds really great and I probably wouldn’t have schlepped up to the Bronx otherwise.

It is! And the perfume vs. the EDP and EDT are different, perfume’s creaminess is swoon-worthy, where the EDP and EDP are more ylang ylang/green forward, and also quite beautiful. I don’t think I could chose a version I love best. Hence, why I have too many bottles….

Hello NST! Nice to see you all :)

I have been lurking here and there, but I have only just had the clarity of mind to figure out how to log on after I forgot my password.

I am not wearing a Unicorn, but I’m smelling good in comptoir sud pacifique vanille abricot.

    I have 2 questions:

    1) I received Yves Rocher Voile d’Ambre in a freebiemeet a while ago and really enjoyed it, but will need to replace it. What is a good substitute?

    2) has anyone smelled Secret deodorant Va Va Vanilla? I was at the grocery store wasting time smelling all of the deodorants, and it smelled truly edible. I don’t like Secret deodorant because white residue, but this one really stood out from the crowd.

In other news, it took me almost 3 hours to get home yesterday due to a trespasser fatality on the train tracks. I know I should feel bad for the person and his/her family and I do; however, what a selfish thing to do! And before anyone thinks of judging me on this one, years ago a close family member decided suicide was the only way out of what’s in his head and he followed through and succeeded – he was a surgeon and knew how to guarantee death without causing himself any physical pain. I know what it felt like to be family and having to sit on the sidelines without any input when the older members of the family decided on “what’s best”.

Suicide almost always has an element of selfishness in it. In addition to the problems for you and the other passengers, (and I have been on hellish train rides), think of the poor conductor.

I did put some of my unicorn scents on Instagram just now and will wear one tomorrow, but today am trying a sample from four I just got from Luckyscent: Hiram Greene Hyde. I don’t like leather scents but wow!—this is something else! And I do love that rich birch tar. Plus, I wore it last night to bed, and the dry down this morning was fantastic, very delicate and almost floral. Amazing perfume.

    Here’s my unicorns: https://www.instagram.com/p/B9Cilhlpat7/?igshid=klnq7bgv0cya.

Hi All, I can’t find the CP rules so let me ask you,
Is a BRAND new perfume a candidate for a Unicorn?
It may be virtually unheard of and OMG, I just put it on and I already WANT a FB!
I am wearing DSH’s new La Casa Azul – Frida (Kahlo- “Women Series) Stories 1.1. She has a set of 3 perfumes coming out. This is the first release, I have a 10 ml spray. First wear, I have mad love. here is the description:
“Inspired by the sensuous tango performed by Frida and Tina Modotti in the movie Frida.
La Casa Azul is an eclectic boozy, green-spiced leather gender fluid fragrance. An iconoclast: just like Frida.” Then an excerpt further down: ” It’s a party filled with cigarette smoke, cigars, tequila, cognac, jalapeno spice, French perfume, leather, salt, and sex.”
Whoa. It’s lovely and changing already and I want a margarita NOW. I have the jalapeño,spice, leather, cigar here and there’s a lime in here I swear.
    Just so fun.

This is just my take on it, but a unicorn fragrance is something that is either a limited edition or discontinued. Limited geographical distribution could also work. Something scarce. YMMV.

In between doing nothing and doing nothing today, I’ve been randomly spraying perfume. I’m currently wafting JHaG Mmmm. Thanks to Oakland Fresca. My travel spray is in thunking territory. Other perfumes I’ve worn today is Jlo Deseo, which I believe is a almost unicorn and Amouage Blossom Love, which was not for me at all.

I’m in PG Isparta today. After wearing this several times, I’ve thunked the decant. It’s not for me, too much berry and sharpness somehow. I know folks love this one!
At any rate, all of my PG samples and decants are thunked, and it’s satisfying to see the little gap in my alphabetized collection. ?

SOTD is HdP 1876, Mata Hari. I have to be in the mood for it but really enjoy it when I do. A dry spicy green chypre. It nods to vintage style perfumery. It isn’t a unicorn but I hardly ever hear it mentioned.

I will list two more. Bogue fragrances are all (at least all the ones I have) about as beast mode as it gets. All are not east to get. But the one that is a unicorn of unicorns is Noun, which has been discontinued and is impossible to get (believe me I have tried). The sample was heavenly.

The one I have that is a rara avis indeed is Bogue’s 0,7738. It is a long experiment by Gardoni and only 33 bottles exist in the world. Its price was not outrageous but finding it is now down to buying tiny decants. I have the bottle and it may not be quite as good as Maa,i but it has more notes that Dove’s stuff and is as good or better than most scents of his I have or have tested
