Tuesday and Rosa Parks Day. What fragrance are you wearing?
I’m wearing Hermès Un Jardin Sur Le Nil. Tea at the moment is an organic Ceylon from Idulgashinna Estate via Upton.
Reminder: on Saturday, 2/8, Now Smell This turns 15! For our birthday, we're moving the Friday Project to Saturday, and meshing it with the Lazy Weekend Poll. Wear a fragrance that you found out about from Now Smell This, or received in a freebiemeet, swapmeet or splitmeet, or just wear a favorite fragrance that you've talked about on Now Smell This. Plus, if you can, share the single best tip or piece of advice you ever received from another reader. (There will be no post on Friday, by the way, because I'm traveling again...if you want to chat, use the Thursday poll!)
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the Porcelain Lotus Teapot B ("These pieces are wood fired without an encasing to create beautiful variations, textures, and natural warping of the shape from exposure to the open flames. This doesn't come without a sacrifice as a third of the work is lost in the process... Each piece is a pleasure to hold in the hand and the body will change color and develop a beautiful petina over time.") is $350 at Tea Dealers.
I’m in the radiant Chanel 1932 thanks to a generous NSTer. Love this one.?
I have been having the most vivid and strange dreams for the past couple of weeks and the only thing I can contribute it to is I have been eating better. I have completely eliminated sugar from my diet. When we were in college my H took the psychology of sleep and dreams, I sure wish I had. Ironic because I was the psych major.
I could never live with out my dark chocolate
You are so disciplined.
It’s a 30 challenge. I love dark chocolate too! Next Monday is day 30 and Tuesday I plan on baking some dark chocolate chip cookies.??
Oh THANK GOODNESS. I thought you meant forever and I was having some issues imagining your life. Not that it is any of my business.
No, not forever, lol, but I think there are hard core paleo eaters who really don’t eat any sugar. I know myself and I love sweets too much to say I would never eat them again.
Same here. Is there even life without dark chocolate??
I’m totally fascinated by dreams. Will you be going back to eating sugar after the challenge?
Me too!
Yes, but I’m really trying to eliminate unnecessary sugar. I know a piece of dark chocolate or a cookie will have some sugar in it, but I’ve started reading the labels of everything I buy (I know, I’ve become one of those people?) and it’s scary how it’s in so many foods that I think don’t need it…things like chicken broth, stewed tomatoes, Italian sausage, bacon!
Thanks for the reminder to read labels! I need to start doing that again.
We’re pretty sugar conscious- especially my husband who did bring home sugar-free bacon once and it was not good. Too salty and brittle. I think a little sugar is needed for texture and to balance flavors.
I had extremely vivid dreams all involving Disneyland last night. I dream of Disneyland often enough that my dream Disneyland has its own identity and setting entirely different from the real one! of course, as in all dreams, I never actually get to on any ride.
Wow, that’s so interesting!
Guerlain Insolence (EdP, of course) because I felt like making a ruckus this morning. Both brainy and beastly.
Have a great day all!
“Could you describe the ruckus, sir?”
????
?????
Awwww…. I had to look it up! Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
Any time!?
Ha! We say that a lot in our house ?
Lol, it’s a great line!?
Chinchilla, because it’s freezing and because I saw it mentioned here so many times I had to try it. Now it’s my absolute favorite honey perfume.
Yes! That is a great choice for these cold mornings.
I loved Chinchilla when I tried it but wasn’t able to identify it as a honey perfume. I kind of see it now that you say that. Have you tried Slowdive? What about Bee? What about Bee’s Bliss? (I’m trying to calibrate myself.)
I like all of those except Slowdive (which was too sledgehammery for me), although I don’t get much honey from Bee’s Bliss and think of it more as a green/hay/floral. I have only tried Bee once on paper, and really liked it, but need to spend more time with it.
This sounds so interesting. Sadly i cannot get a sample of it in Europe…
Today I’m wearing Silences, for it’s green, astringent quality. I learned about this one from NST, bought a FB unsniffed, and I’m now on my second bottle.
Ooh, I really need to re-up my Silences. Sometimes you just need to scratch that galbanum itch.
When I want something green and astringent I reach for either Silences or Niki de Saint Phalle. Niki de Saint Phalle gets its astringent quality from artemisia, but the effect is similar.
Wow! that’s really something! It’s a beauty.
Silences ought to go onto my Full Bottle list.
Ooh, I love Silences! Green, green, green! You smell mahvelous!
Wearing vintage Shalimar right now but thinking of what to wear after my shower. Just signed on for a 30 day trial for Netflix today. I think Noontide Petals might do the trick today or Une Rose Vermeille. Too many choices today.
Twins (or almost) – my Shalimar is a decant of unknown vintage.
SOTD is Parsi cooking…a mixture of onions, garam masala, turmeric, and some dhansak masala and whatever else is wafting out of the kitchen…garlic ginger..etc etc
SipOTD is greek coffee.
Off to my Italian lesson. Will check in later. Ciao amici..
Have you nailed down the Greek coffee recipe?
OMG I want to come over for lunch and coffee!
I’m wearing Frederic Malle Iris Poudre, from the travel size bottle which I got right here on NST during a swapmeet. It’s taken me a few years to warm up to it. This winter, however, it’s been on regular rotation!
Isn’t it interesting how it can take years and then become a favorite?
It is, and that’s why I’m reluctant to swap something that is a “maybe”. Sometimes I have to grow into it 🙂
In the delicious Bruno Fazzolari Ummagumma. I learned about this from NST and after all the love showed to it by some of you here, especially Deva, I got a full bottle that I have been enjoying greatly for almost 3 years.
Yep, always think of Deva with this one!
I don’t think she has worn it recently!
Yes, ditto. Ummagumma is definitely one I learned about here. I’ll put that on, too. Sometimes it’s hard for me to remember where I learned about something first – makeupalley in the good old days of swapping was the beginning of much sampling for me.
Most of the perfumes I wear I have heard of from either NST or Bois de Jasmine. It has not been a long journey for me since I started reading perfume blogs in 2009. I went from there very deep into the rabbit hole! ?
It’s a good hole to be in with lots of nice friends. 😀
So true! ?
It’s a good hole to be in with lots of nice friends. 😀
It wasn’t too warm for Ummagumma for you today?
I am always freezing at work. The ac runs at very low temperatures all year round and I usually spend most of my day there. I can even wear winter perfumes during summer time ?.
Good morning Y’all!
I took a chance with the Perfume Grinch and wore ONE spray of Mitsouko….I was craving its cozy spiciness and warmth. It’s projecting way more than I thought it would though, so we’ll see if I can get away with it…..
Fingers crossed!
You gave me the idea to wear Mitsouko today–though all I have is EdT.
I’m wearing Tokyo Milk Dark Tainted Love, thanks to the ever generous Hajusuuri. Today is my Friday, woohoo! Yesterday a young girl at my work complimented my sotd, which was Allure edp. Then asked my opinion of what smells good, that lasts. I’m going to bring her samples to try today. I asked her what she wears now, and she said ” I don’t know, something I got for Christmas” I think this is how most people wear perfume. Lol
Ha! You are so right. I remember someone saying if you’re asked what perfume you’re wearing just say “something French” and then you can gauge their interest by whether or not they ask you a follow up question.
Lol, I’ve said something french before.
Sometimes they’re not ready for a question about what they are wearing. I was in the grocery store recently and passed a guy who was clearly sporting fragrance. I asked him if he was wearing something, and he got all “deer in the headlights” and stammered, “well, I think I am”. I just complimented him on his choice and moved on.
I get inordinately excited when I smell any perfume out in the wild. People don’t wear it much around here. ?
I smell alot at work, but never out and about. Mostly I smell viva la juicy and light blue. For men, something that smells like Savauge but probably isn’t and something that reminds me of British Sterling, but probably isn’t LOL
It’s about 50/50 as far as women and men wearing fragrance goes.
I smelled Santal 33 two days ago on an unusally (for our campus and demographic) fashion forward looking student. I know the scent is common in NY, but we are in the (officially) most diverse city in the USA, so I think this was a rare “sniffing” (sighting?).
Woo hoo! And kudos on the perfume compliment yesterday!
Thanks!
Enjoy your we Lillyjo, a compliment is always very rewarding, I have a small 33ml of Allure EDP and if I don’t wear it often, sometimes I really crave its peaches and cream.
It’s one of those perfumes that I always think why don’t I wear this more often? Because I’m always happy when I do.
Oh yes, I have a few perfumes like that, I suppose the answer is I have too many choices, but I’m not complaining.
I love Allure. Recent discovery for me. It’s all lovely peach.
Yes, and yet not sickly sweet like you can get with peach!
Happy Friday!
Enjoy your Friday! And whoo hoo for perfume compliments!
I’m drinking Taylor’s Scottish breakfast tea, which has a hefty kick of caffeine. This is good as I have a light cold. Hopefully it won’t get too bad.
Wearing Barbara Bui today in the muggy weather. It is a light amber, but I hadn’t really realized that until today. Would never have know about this fragrance without NST. ❤️
I wore Ambre 114 on Saturday, Casmir on Sunday and was commando yesterday (dental appointment), so the Amber Project continues!
Ooooh. An amber project. I’d like to do that one week. Excellent project!
I have a surprisingly large number of ambers. This could take awhile. ?
Hmmm, you smell good. I haven’t worn mine much this season- thinking about decanting some for my niece. It’s one of my most complimented perfumes!
That’s so nice that you have a niece who’s getting into perfume. I hope she fully dives down the rabbit hole and joins us!
She likes wearing perfume, but she’s really moderate and even-keeled in very thing she does that I don’t see her getting into it in that way. I can try…?
You do smell great, and hope you beat that cold!
I think I will; it seems to be a light one.
Hmmmmmm. I need to re-smell my sample of Barbara Bui… it was a vanilla to me.
Coco edp from about five years ago. Shadow of its former self, but lovely just the same.
Funnily enough, I remember reading on a perfume blog, maybe it was here? Maybe Perfume Shrine? Somewhere else? A few years ago. Anyway, the writer–who I think was selling off some of her perfumes– was saying that Coco was so unpopular among perfumistas that she couldn’t even give away her bottle.
I can’t image that, but then again, I’m sentimental about Coco.
My bottle is about 5 years old too. I think it’s beautiful still. The biggest difference I notice is that it doesn’t last for 2 weeks on my sweater, the way it once did. I would gladly take anyone’s Coco! I notice on the YouTube videos that people will recommend Coco Mademoiselle and clarify to NOT get the regular Coco because it smells ” old lady” lol
NO IT DOES NOT! It’s totally sexy imo.
I vastly prefer Coco to Coco Mlle.
My bottle of Coco is about 20 years old and although I don’t wear it often these days, I used to wear it almost daily many years ago. Potent. One or two sprays were enough, especially for work.
I am still not sure how to remove the the bottle from its black plastic encasing so I can find out how much juice I’ve got left. If anyone has the answer, please let me know.
Check the bottom to see if you can remove it, almost like you were going to put in batteries. I think you can pry it open at the seems. Be careful though in case I’m incredibly wrong.
Thanks lillyjo! I’ll go look take another look at the contraption ?
If it’s the black plastic bottle, rectangular with a 1” gold band where the lid attaches, then lillyjo is correct. Just slide the base of it off.
I say, enjoy the mystery, but especially enjoy your vintage Coco. Wish I still had some from 20 years ago!
You’re probably right, Oakland. Enjoy it while it lasts and then move on.
If you’d like some, let me know. I’m at arzeznik in the land of comcast with a dot and a net.
Oh yum, Coco, you smell fabulous! I think its one of the best in Chanel’s regular/non-exclusive line up.
Today I’m wearing Fils de Dieu, which I started wanting because deva spoke so highly of it, and which I am able to wear because springpansy kindly sent me a decant of it 🙂
Yesterday’s Tea Rose was also on theme: I got it a couple years ago from the lovely kpaint, whom I never see here anymore. Hope she is well. Anyway, as I think I said already, I could do a YEAR of NST-themed perfumes, because I grew here as a perfumista, and only perhaps 10 % of my collection is something I didn’t read about here first.
love Fils de Dieu! I’m in his aunt – Shalimar.
Don’t hate me–I loathe Shalimar. I don’t know if it’s my skin or my nose, but I cannot stand it. It was my first, my worst scrubber. I see no connection between FdD and Shalimar, and that is to my benefit 🙂
Today I am wearing vintage 1970s Cabochard extrait.
The extrait must be phenomenal!
You smell amazing.
oh, i must revisit my vintage Cabochard EdT soon
Forgot what I put in this morning and since it’s faded quite a bit, had to really sniff and think. It’s Kelly Caleche edp from a swap decant, which I don’t wear often- partly because the last time I wore it at home, my naked kitty started wheezing ? Hopefully it’ll be just a mere wisp by the time I get home.
I love the tea set and reading about the firing method.
Oh no, wheezing kitty is not good!
And yes, tea set too expensive (even the cup was over $100) but I really love it.
Billions of blue blistering barnacles! Lovely website, but the prices! Yeesh.
But this one (and a veritable bargain on the site!) is wonderful:
https://www.tea-dealers.com/collections/teapots-and-pitchers/products/arita-porcelain-black-slate-shinogi-gaiwan
Oh wow ??? beautiful!
Wow, that is spectacular.
I probably don’t have any tea that deserves that much attention.
Aw, poor kitty! I hope that she doesn’t wheeze very often due to perfume.
It’s still a mystery what the triggers are. Sometimes she doesn’t react to things I thought she was reacting to previously. I don’t spray near her just to be safe. I do think she is sensitive to mold, though.
SOTD = Annick Goutal Nuit Etoilee EDT

Rant – NJ Transit yesterday ?. Utter chaos. A train broke down in the tunnel and then overhead wires were not working. Just about every train across all lines were cancelled (most) or delayed. In a good day, people already push and shove. You get the picture. I decided to Uber it because I don’t need the nonsense. I also chose to not share the ride for the $25 price difference – it’s worth not being in close quarters with 3 strangers.
Oh gosh! Good move on not sharing the ride. Hope it’s better today!
Better today! Thanks.
Horrors. Hope today is back to normal.
I know, right? It is back to normal today!
Gack! The worst possible place for a train to have problems. I don’t blame you one bit for soloing with your Uber.
And now for something completely different: that blue bottle looks suspiciously familiar to me. Maybe because I have one too? ?
LOL!
Oh, I’m so sorry! I commuted on NJ Transit for several years, it’s one of the reasons we left NJ! I hope it’s better tomorrow!
I am wearing Dryad today!
Not perfume related, but I started listening to podcasts last month (finally) because of NST!
I spotted a recommendation for the David Tennant & Olivia Colman episode (was it you, Robin, who shared that link?? Sorry cant remember).
My favourite subject now for podcasts though is history! It really makes the commute so much smoother. ?
Oh yay! It might have been me, although now I can’t remember where I learned about it and it could well have been here, ha!
Which history podcasts are you enjoying?
One I really like and cannot stop talking about isn’t technically a history cast, but Tim Hartford’s “Cautionary Tales” is crazy good food for thought and touches on critical moments in history (the description leads to you believe that there is some humor involved. So far, the two episodes I have listened to have been harrowing, not humorous!) I sort of liked “You’re Dead to Me”–though I have only listened to one episode so far (on Boudica).
I binged You’re dead to me ? Quality depends on guests they have though. But its short and light hearted and sometimes thats just what I need.
Last week I started listening to The Medieval Podcast. First episodes the audio quality was subpar but its getting better. Subjects and guests are interesting!
I also started Revisionist History…
….aaaand I am now subscribing to Cautionary Tales, thank you for the tip.
Lots of catching up to do. ?
It was thanks to Kanuka I think. I really enjoyed that interview/conversation. Interesting to hear what Olivia Colman had to say about the level of vanity these days. You can hear they’re good mates, which helps!
Yeah it was good to hear that she is a sensible and down to earth woman! Makes me love her even more ?
Dryad! One of my loves! Yesterday I wore her new sister, Bengale Rouge. Gorgeous, and still wafting faintly from my elbows even after an intervening bath! Have you tried it yet?
Yes, i have a sample, i think its great as well, though sometimes it feels a bit too sweet/gourmand for my taste.
I really love that drydown though
“you smell like Christmas cookies” was my husbands comment haha
Thanks for the heads up about the Tennant and Coleman podcast – I love those two actors! Also going to check out Cautionary Tales. I love history podcasts, too.
In YSL Cinema today, which seems to appeal at this time of year. It’s my second most loved mimosa/almond scent.
Love how the teapot are understated white but so very decorative with the leaf motif.
This has been on my want list, but I haven’t smelled it since it came out. Is your bottle a newer one?
It’s not vintage, I bought about four years ago, it is very strong and long-lasting. I can send you a sample.
Did someone say almond?
🙂 It’s almost edible. Cinema is often forgotten.
is understated, can’t write proper English today.
Proper English no is required 😉
🙂 Thank you Robin.
Day 2 of a blind buy from an NST discussion/splitmeet…this time a decant of Coromandel EdT. This one totally works, but I wear it infrequently because I hate the idea of thunking it.
So easy for me to do scents heard about on NST. I do remember it was NST that sent me to walk to the Ormond Jayne boutique in 2007 while on a business trip in London.
I wish I’d rationed my decant of 28 La Pausa better!
A spray of Alien Eau Luminescente today, it’s the mandarin one in the orange bottle that came out in 2008.
I haven’t been keeping up with NST of late. My new job is all of 5 minutes walk further away, and it appears that is sufficient to disrupt my usual morning routine 🙂
The Alien I regret not purchasing most. It’s glorious!
I missed out on that Alien, too. I never even saw that orange bottle in person.
It was gorgeous bottle and smell!
Ummagumma goodness today. ??
Speak of the devil! We were just talking about you & Ummagumma.
I wanted something sweet, but not too sweet, and cozy to wear with a sweater for this cold day, so I went with Traversee du Bosphore. I got my bottle in a swap with November Rose last year.
Love it, you smell great.
I wore just one spray of Salome to work. I love animalics, and this is a great one! And its gotten colder here, so i love the heavy hitters.
You smell fabulous!
Salome is glorious. I learned about it here!
You smell fantastic!
Ooh, you smell wonderful! I wore Salome’s new sister scent, Bengale Rouge, yesterday. So beautiful!
Up at 0 dark 30 to go to yoga this morning, it was 5C, brrr. Wearing Dulcis in Fundo to feel warm, sweet & cozy.
I salute you since I stayed in bed under the covers until after 9 am and it is not even that cold here, and I am about to miss the 3rd yoga class of the day. We’ll see if I drag my sorry self over there after dinner for the last chance of the day…
https://www.wikihow.com/Do-Yoga-in-Bed ?
HA. I did end up doing a 20 minute routine before dinner, but I do not usually push myself as hard as any old 60 minute class is likely to.
Now I feel virtuous that I did a little better than bed yoga 😉
Shalimar, edp a freebiemeet decant. Thanks!!
Kenzo Flower
Beautiful!
SOTD: the very delicious Jasmins Marzipane
Took the day off to get some personal stuff done. Currently enjoying Tea Forte’s NY Botanical Garden Jardin collection which is just delightful! The other day I had the chocolate rose and today I’m trying chamomile citron.
I think they discontinued the travel sprays on JM, which is a shame. So happy I bought one after Sniffa (enabler pin to Ihadanidea). Will have to pull that out this week. You smell beautiful. That tea sounds delicious.
Macy’s had a travel spray set over the holidays when they were running a 15% off Beauty promotion. I didn’t buy because I dithered ??♀️. Money saved!
Jasmins Marzipane is very lovely. I’m sad that the travel sprays are now hard to find.
I’m wearing my NST discovery Theorema. I never knew that Fendi made perfumes before reading NST. I blind-bought a bottle after the raves here. Although I would not call it a favorite (it’s a bit subdued for my tastes) it is nice and I can count it as a blind buy success.
I believe I did the same thing, foxbins. Blind buy success for me too!
I heard about this first on makeupalley, but it was Robin’s comments about it that encouraged me to buy a bottle and I am so glad I did while it was available!
I must have likewise heard about it first on MakeupAlley. I did find a store at the time that had a tester, and IIRC it was all they had so I bought the tester.
Hello NST! It’s a gloomy and grey Tuesday here. I stepped on a scale for the first time in months, and discovered that I have gained at least 5 pounds from holiday (over)indulgences. Phooey. So I am cutting way back on my snacking and junk food. The almost daily little square of dark chocolate is not in the ban.
SOTD = Caron Yatagan, from the sample stash. Not sure where I first heard about this one. It’s spicy and a little skanky, but surprisingly quiet and well behaved on me.
“Spicy and a little skanky but surprisingly quiet and well behaved on me” LOL ?
Sorry Jalapeno, but my mind went straight to thinking like Tom Ford!????
Maybe I should have said “poopy” instead of “skanky”? Because I did get a little whiff of Eau de Poo! Thankfully that didn’t last long.
Oh too bad. I’ve been curious about this one, but poopy, I can’t do. The Alien Oud is like that, goes poopy in the drydown.
Weird thing is, the poopy smell was up in the top notes for a little while. Pretty sure that castoreum is listed as part of the perfume composition. So maybe I was smelling beaver butt?
I’ve been curious about Yatagan, but maybe you’ve cured me of my curiosity, lol.
LoL in beaver butt. I borrowed a book on the search for special things and one of the things is civet coffee beans. I think I have poopy ? reading in my future ???
Yes you do! I’ve heard about those “special” coffee beans and the crazy prices they go for. ☕
I did about the same amount of damage this holiday, but I did not do so well cutting back until last week…4 days of 2 meals a day took care of the last of it without having to give up ice cream or chocolate. I am fairly certain I will put it all back on over vacation next week, but that’s ok!
Had a job interview this afternoon. It went well, but I never can tell about these things. I’ve done interviews which I thought were perfect and not heard back, and I got an offer from what I felt was a very weak interview. So we’ll see. I don’t mind the job I have, but a raise and some added vacation days would be nice. Hmm faint praise, eh? I wore a modest 2 sprays of VCA Bois d’Iris.
Good luck for the best outcome!
After I posted this, they called me back to set up a second interview! That won’t happen for a few days, but that they called back so soon, is a good sign!
Wow, that’s awesome! Good luck on that second interview! ?
Oh that sounds quite promising! Good luck, meridifay!
Awesome, good luck!
Oh yay, go you!
Best of luck!
Congratulations! Best of luck in round 2!
I’ve missed everyone at NST but have been MIA for several days. Although my heart is heavy, I did spray a wee bit of Box of Eels today and found some comfort.
I’m sorry to hear that you are feeling down Petunia. Hugs.
?
Oh Petunia, I noticed you missing last week. I’m sorry for your heavy heart.
Thanks dear. Can I email you?
Absolutely.
Sending you hugs Petunia.
Thank you!
I’m so sorry for whatever is weighing you down Petunia. Hope it gets better.
Thank you Robin.
Petunia,
I’m sad to hear your heart is heavy. Sending all good thoughts your way.
A little late but I hope your spirits have lifted! Hugs!
Late to the party but I’m rocking a generous helping of Bat today— I’m trying not to be precious with it, but I know I’ll miss it when I’ve used up my remaining ~3ml. (I moved recently and discovered that about half my decants suffered some serious shrinkage so I’m trying to cut down on the hoarding instinct)
So sorry about the decants tracy.o! I know that story.
SotD = Penhaligon’s Ostara
Gosh, I got weak looking at that teapot and cup today. I adore white porcelain, lotus flowers, and teapots. That’s a heady combination there. Thank goodness the price puts it firmly in the realm of dream within a dream for me, heh heh.
Remember the excitement over Ostara? It was all over the blogs. 😀 I do love it, but it gets little skin time. So today I decided to smell like spring even though it’s almost bitterly cold here. Ostara smelled great all day, and the sweater I’m wearing will smell nice for days.
Terrific Tuesday hugs and kisses to everyone, you smell fantastic. Mmmmwah!
Ostara is one of my loves — I have two backup bottles! Can’t believe they discontinued it so quickly.
Good evening! Commando during the day, now wearing a couple of sprays of 4711 Pink Pepper and Grapefruit. I learned about this one from Pixel’s split from the large bottles she got. (Thank you, Pixel!) 🙂
My day wasn’t bad as far as getting things done, but I’m getting a cold and I didn’t feel as energetic as I would have liked to. I still got errands done and some grocery shopping, and worked out in the yard for a little while. I picked some snowdrops to enjoy the flowers inside and pruned dead canes off some of my roses.
The 4711’s are great scents! 😀 I love ’em.
SOTD today was Dasein’s Spring: a little wishful thinking because it really has felt like spring here, and daffodils are starting to bloom, but I’m sure we’ll get one last blast of winter before it really is spring.
