Monday scent of the day 12/2

Posted by Robin on 2 December 2019 222 Comments

It’s Cyber Monday and Britney Spears' birthday and the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm (slowly waking up) in Tauer Incense Extrême.

Reminder: on 12/6 we're doing Scents of the Season, part 1...wear something that smells like evergreens, or has an evergreen note. Suggested by thegoddessrena.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Wearing my doctored up Mistral Patchouli to which I added more patchouli, cocoa, peppermint and cardamom.

We are in a State of Emergency so no work for me. Sadly, the mini Marzipans went back early on Saturday. However, both college campuses cancelled classes today. Eldest had to walk to work for her shift last night and then walk home this morning after her 12 hour shift.

I get major anxiety driving in inclement weather. Needless to say, I am not driving to work today. The governor stated that only emergency personnel should be on the roads.

Ooo and since I was up early with my furry granddaughter I decided to look at the full range of fragrances on Luckyscent having read about the APJ discount code on Portia’s Scent Diary early yesterday morning. No purchases made….are y’all proud of me? What I did notice is that certain brands have repackaged to smaller bottles for more money per ml. Other brands have massive price increases ( looking at you Papillon and Masque Milano). And Bengal Rouge is back in stock. CYBERAPJ gets you 15 percent off.

Dryad went from 135 euro to 155 euro within 1 year.
          ?
I know about inflation and stuff, but this seems a bit too much….
(I think the same happened to Hiram Green, correct me if I am wrong…)

Yes I think you may be right. I have been eyeing L’Atessa. I am fairly certain that when Masque Milano debuted the bottles were 100 ml. Then they became 30 ml. L’Atessa was $130 not too long ago. Now it’s $158 ?

          • cazaubon says:
            2 December 2019 at 2:11 pm

I don’t know what Hiram Green’s launch price was, but they’ve been stable at $165 for a while I think. Hoping he doesn’t succumb to crazy inflation.

Yes, I’m quite peeved about the shrinking bottle sizes and massive price increases (Papillon, Masque, Parfum d’Empire, Grandiflora). I am boycotting those brands unless I find them heavily discounted.

As for the Luckyscent coupon, it’s basically worthless to me as a California resident. Unlike Twisted Lily, Indigo and Beautyhabit, if you use a discount code you have to pay $8.99 shipping. Between that and the sales tax, you don’t save anything unless you’re buying something really expensive. I only buy from them things that I can’t find anywhere else at this point.

Yeah, I put in a bottle of Le Cri (which is in back-order now) just to see if it was worth it. It was like $20 off, but with the 8.99 shipping +plus sales tax (which is weird because I never have been charged sales tax from LA to NY!) it came out to a $1 discount in the end ?

They just opened a brick & mortar store in NY, so from now on you will be charged sales tax. Sux!

I’d wondered about that, but wouldn’t that only apply if they were shipping it from the NY location? I asked the SA if the CA warehouse was still fulfilling the online orders and he said they were- the NY shop doesn’t have a huge selection compared to the LA one.

        • cazaubon says:
          2 December 2019 at 3:02 pm

Nope, if they have a physical presence, they have to charge tax, regardless of where the order ships from.

I looked it up. Hiram Green bottles used to be 135 euro, a few years ago. Now they are 155 euro.
But what I am mostly disappointed about: they stopped offering travel sizes. ?

Good sleuth work! I wait for sales to buy Hiram Green, he has 20% off today for example. But as for the travel sizes, I heard they were too expensive/not cost-effective for him to produce, so he stopped. As a small indie house, I can understand, but it’s unfortunate.

Yeah I understand it as well. But luckily I have my favourite Hiram Greens (Moon Bloom and Dilettante) in travel size already. I may replace Moon Bloom with a fb (if I ever empty the travel spray).
Such a wearable and festive white flower!

Argh so glad the whole black friday / Cyber Monday hype is almost over.

But I hope Thanksgiving was a blast for those who celebrated it.

I did some NON-black friday-related perfume shopping on saturday though.

I bought a small bottle of
New York Intense (Nicolai) and a Black Knight (Francesca Bianchi).

    Wearing New York Intense today.
    So good.

Black Knight is a lovely vetiver, honey, iris and leather combo to my nose.

30% off. A bit of an impulse buy.
So yes, totally guilty of black friday shopping. Hahhahha.
      ???

The thing that drives me crazy though are the dozens of mailings in my mailbox from every retailer. Some companies mailed me 3 times a day to remind me of their Black Friday discount….urghhh

Right now I am feeding her Purina Beyond which is a huge step up from the Purina One Hard Niblets they fed her for her whole life in the animal shelter she was in for almost seven years. She was so malnourished and underweight because she doesn’t like the hard stuff and refuses to eat it.bMr Marzipan has managed to plump her up to a whopping seven pounds ?

Hi chocolatemarzipan8 – I love Tiki Cat (my boys would rob a bank for that stuff), as an aside, Tiki Cat is very rich. I give it to them sparingly because it causes a little gastric distress…. You can find Tiki Cat at PetCo has the cheapest prices.
The boys also both loved Nutro Max.
In a pinch, Gerber’s Baby Food in ham or chicken works in a pinch. It’s basically pureed ham or chicken, and no added bad things like excessive salt.

Also a lot of places (e.g. Petco, which carries Tiki Cat and Wellness) will ship free if you buy over a certain amount, and since canned food doesn’t really go bad you can just order a lot at once.

My own cats are pretty finicky with wet food but they do like Avoderm chicken + tuna+ vegetables, Wellness tuna morsels, Fussie Cat chicken +tuna.
For more economical, but higher quality/grain free options, there’s Dave’s canned food which I blend with the much cheaper Friskies pate and give to my feral colony and they love it, but my own cats won’t eat it (or any patés for that matter. Little snobs, lol.) I buy most of my stuff from Chewy online, when I place a large order since shipping is only free over $50. In between, I do try and support my local independent pet store.
I will say that the Friskies pate ingredients aren’t bad and a case of 12 13oz cans is like $12 on Amazon. I did have a cat live to be 19 and she ate Fancy Feast crack cat food almost her whole life, so there’s that.

I’m a big fan of Chewy.com which is mentioned below. If you sign up for regular Autoship you get another discount for that in addition to the free shipping over $50. I have a lot of cats. I buy a combination of American Journey grain-free turkey and salmon
in gravy plus Friskies indoor home style turkey dinner with garden greens in gravy. All cats love the gravy. They lick it off first but then do eat the other parts. These have been the favorites out of many kinds of canned food I have tried, including venison, rabbit, duck, etc. I hope this helps. They also get dry food, usually Iams of some sort, which seems reasonably healthy but doesn’t break the bank. My friend who has 10 cats buys only Wellness for them, also from Chewy, but (a) she is rich, and (b) all her cats are too fat.

I am also a fan of Chewy.com. My cats get a prescription kibble (dry food), which is so much easier to get from Chewy than from the vet’s office. For wet food, I’d suggest trying Blue Buffalo. You can find that brand at PetsMart and Petco.

Wellness Core is a really good option (we use the chicken flavor) it comes in can & dry so we use the combo. (It doesn’t smell either. )

I would recommend not feeding a cat Purina, it’s total garbage. If you are gunna get something from grocery store, Blue Wilderness/Blue Buffalo.

If going Petco, I like Whole Earth as it’s made with ingredients only from the USA and reasonable on price. There is Orijen, which is top of the line but expensive.

Stay away from corn, as it’s a common cat allergy, my vet informed me.

My large decant of Coromandel EDP is arriving in the mail today. I hope the seller didn’t send it certified. When I have bought from Ebay a couple times, sellers did send it certified. I am not looking forward to work. Even if half an inch is predicted, people panic and rush to the store for groceries. It’s Ohio folks, you know how this goes. Wearing a tiny dab of no 19 extrait to get me through.

In Sienne L’Hiver and am feeling a FB purchase coming on… oh noooo….

Looked up the reviews on Fragrantica–and a lot of people did not like this one, at least half—I think a slab of smoked fish and the Holocaust (sorry, very uncool, but indeed this is true) were invoked to describe this perfume. On Basenotes, the most recent review alludes to Bruegel’s The Hunters in the Snow, which is one of my all time favorite paintings. Another reviewer makes the connection with Dzongkha, which I completely see/smell. That said, only half of the Basenotes reviewers gave it a thumbs up as well.

    I better test it a little longer…

    *waves*

    Hey guys!

    1) Am in Amelie Mae on this cold, sunny day.

    2) A dusting of snow, but mostly slick roads this AM.

    3) Am keeping things rather chill in terms of shopping. I did buy some cool Finnish running shoes (Karhu) which will not be used for running; rather they will accompany high waisted jeans along with all the other non workout shoes. I did buy gifts for the nieces and nephews and my sister- but relatively small ones this year as I splashed out on game systems a couple of years ago.

    4) I also freshened up the wardrobe- I have a couple of interviews before the end of the year; the jobs would be starting in February.

    5) After a year of insistent talk, I finally – FINALLY- decided on a kitchen plan and appliances. I was really stuck in terms of decision making:
    1) I wanted an induction stove- cooking with magnetic waves! So Star Trek! So me! But induction stoves ranges are PRICEY compared to electric glass top ranges. And doing a separate cooktop & oven is also VERY pricey. In the end, I have decided to just get a really good Frigidaire induction range- without all the bells & whistles. The ratings are still good!
    2) The dishwasher I waited on because I wanted a really quiet one with stainless steel inside. It was good to wait until now.
    3) Same with the cabinets. I would get soft close as a standard and pricing on the cabinets is HALF what I was quoted earlier in the year- even including the convenience hardware.
    4) The herringbone flooring that I thought was out of range due to the cost of the kitchen is NOW within my budget, and I am excited.
    5) The best and scary bit is that my housemate is leaving, which is a good thing for her and good for me, since no one will be inconvenienced by a ripped out kitchen (save for me) and have to deal with issues of redoing a floor. I do have a good cushion to go several months without a housemate, so *crosses fingers*

    How have you guys been?

I may need to refresh/rebuild my kitchen as well…soon (or move to another house with a better kitchen haha)

Dish washer, fridge etc still work, and I feel reluctant to replace stuff that still works, but cabinets are worn out and ugly. Maybe replacing the cabinet doors is the right solution. But sometimes I also long for a little bit more space. Or an open kitchen….
And sometimes i think Id rather spend my money on a trip ☺️ #firstworldproblems

Oh, if the appliances still work leave them be!

The cabinets I got were the cheapest builder’s special that you can get. They are not bad per se nor ugly; just not my style and not very functional for my needs ( I prep/cook a lot and host quite a bit, and the kitchen does not allow me to do so efficiently). Plus I want to add true value to this ‘starter’ home, and cheapskate cabinets and blah appliances ain’t it.

I mostly use the kitchen to prep and cook modest dinners for 2. But its a chicken/egg story here i guess. Id probably host more dinners for more people if my kitchen were bigger…..?!

Anyways, good luck with your kitchen plan ☺️ and i hope all goes smoothly, without delays!

It is way, WAY too easy to be stuck with all the choices, materials, configurations….

Part what made this somewhat easier for ME was that the townhouse is designed in such a way that the choices are narrowed down already; there are no walls to move and plumbing is relatively simple and there is already an open flow to the dining and living area. Once I bought the Big Bertha fridge that really dictated everything else.

Who knew that Sensuous Noir has Pine as a note? So, it suits for the CP and, instead of waiting for Friday, I’m wearing it today as I see the snow coming down.

Got my Marimekko Uniqlo jacket. Very cute, although it runs bigger than I expected. It’s so lightweight I’d probably need to layer anyway. But it’s so weird how their own brand sizing in jackets can run small, yet these collaborations are very different….

Wearing Indult Reve En Cuir, very subtle and work-appropriate. Tried Malle Rose & Cuir over the weekend, which was nice but not tempting even at 15% off.

SOTD was No3 Essence Ambre, its a like, not love. SOTE now is Theo Fennel. This is much better and dirt cheap on ebay…..

Finally managed to get the sprayer working on my bottle of 10 Corso Como (it’s been out of commission for a while), so I am wafting gentle woods.

Does anybody here remember (and/or wear) that fragrance with a trio of religious/spiritual figures in its title? I can’t for the life of me remember the name.

You mean Moslbuddjewhindu something or other? It’s long discontinued, I think it was a one-off indie project. I still have a sample vial floating around here somewhere.

That’s the one! I kept trying to put different combinations together, but they all sounded implausible to my ear. Not sure why I even thought about it this morning; I think I associate it with 10 Corso Como for some reason.

It’s snowing, but heavy, wet snow right now. I went with Chanel Paris-Riviera for some fantasy sunshine.
For anyone interested in candles, Boy Smells especially, I ended up buying my niece a candle from Need Supply Company who has a nice variety of candles at 20% off with no minimum for free shipping.
    I’m done shopping for now… ?

Bah, I am sleepy and distracted in spite of the prodigious amount of sleeping conducted over the Thanksgiving weekend. SOTD is ELDO Spice Must Flow, which sample i was lucky enough to win from Twisted Lily on IG. Cardamom, rose, incense- it’s wonderful and perfect for the season. I hope it’s released in the US soon.

I thought it smelled fairly realistic when I put it on — definitely not a Pine Sol scent. Later on it got more of a waxy smell, but still had a pretty good evergreen scent. I think I also got a sample of Frasier Fir, so I’ll try to test that one this week, too.

Yucky weather for me today, too. It’s been cold rain and temps in the upper 30’s F for most of the day. I did manage to get out for a quick dash of errands before the rain resumed right around lunchtime. No snow in my area yet, but it has been promised for later on. Mr. Jalapeno worked from home today, since his work texted him this morning that they were closing early. ☔⛄

    RIP Lil Bub. ?

SOTD = back in Rihanna Rogue. It’s been nice having this as a no-brainer for cold weather. I have no clue what it smells like in warm weather, though.

I wore MPG Ambre Precieux today. Very warmly elegant. This afternoon I saw the new movie about Mr. Rogers with Tom Hanks. It’s awfully good, and not what I expected. Matthew Rhys’s journalist is really the star, and he’s fantastic. I’m still reflecting on it.

A beautiful scent. That movie looks intriguing, I saw those 2 stars interviewed recently and they still have a genuine affection for each other and their respective characters. You have had quite an emotional day, I hope the perfume helped.

So for a good laugh: I am SO IN the CP today, with both a spritz of Bois d’Ascese AND
PdN Incense Oud on my wrists and in close proximity….. If I flap my arms it’s instant Christmas!! ?
I know it’s aLOT but they are only teeny tiny spritzes to help ‘prep’ the mood here.
We pulled our artificial tree out of the barn and although covered year round it has a bit of a dusty scent no matter how well shook and aired out.
I am waiting for the cat to climb it.

SOTD = Le Labo Patchouli 24 vtg from a Basenotes split and St. Clair Scents Gardener’s Glove

WFH today due to the weather, with the concern more for the coming home part. When one already spends 3 hours commuting Door to door round trip, any delay really s.u.c.k.s. That said, I am very lucky that I can pretty much do my work anywhere and I may just WFH again tomorrow. I do get cabin fever if I do it more than 2 days in a row.

Re: unwanted emails. Now I am also getting unwanted text. Hell to the no on that one…you better believe I immediately unsubscribed. Why would I need to know you got my order after I got the acknowledgment via email? Do I also need to know you’ve started working on it? How about you finished boxing up my order? No, no and no. Just give me the tracking number and leave it to me to track it. I do not need the blow by blow!

    On to cybershop!
