Tuesday scent of the day 11/5

Posted by Robin on 5 November 2019 235 Comments

It's Tuesday, SWINTON’s birthday and Guy Fawkes Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am sure I will find my decant of Etat Libre d'Orange Like This any minute now, because I know I saw it just recently. Tea at the moment is Mariage Frères Chandernagor. (And a quick PSA: a family member is having surgery this week, so I may disappear for even longer stretches of time than usual. I should still manage to put up a scent of the day post every day, but if not, apologies in advance. Never mind — this just got rescheduled for later in the month.)

Reminder: 11/8 will be Art House / Stunt Perfume Friday...wear a fragrance that you find weird and wonderful but that might not be appreciated by anyone but another perfumista. Bonus points if you've ever received a spontaneous negative response or odd question and still wear it! Suggested by HemlockSillage.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Pito kettle by Alessi ("...the only object that Frank Gehry designed in his long career. An architect known for his outstanding buildings with a highly innovative formal language, Gehry created a sculptural and extraordinary object that is PITO. The kettle's body is made of stainless steel 18/10 and it has a cylindrical shape, similar to that of a wave; the handle and the melodic top are made of mahogany and look like two fishes darting out of water.") is around $520.

Guy Fawkes used to be a big event when I was growing up in NZ but last night I didn’t hear or see a single firework. There is a move to ban private fireworks sales and have only public displays…based on safety and fire risk ( it can be quite dry in some parts in November )

Hi all! Robin, I hope everything goes well today.

In Hyacinth and a Mechanic, which I realized too late would have been an even better scent for my Tin Man costume. I had a coworker said I smelled like a sneeze while I was wearing it. Not sure what she meant but I’ve heard worse!

Maybe a big sneeze could be a bit metallic smelling, like a bleeding nose can be metallic -blood like?

I am wearing CB:IHP Wild Hunt. I am nit sure this is unusual enough for a stunt, but I am probably a bad judge of that since I would be perfectly happy to smell like latex paint.

Robin, by a staggering coincidence, I was fishing around for a sample to wear and the first thing I pulled from the bowl was Like That, which of course I put on. I am a fan of SWINTON and of ELdO, but I can live without this: I’ve almost drained the vial over time, assuming it would grow on me, and it never has.

I can probably live without it too!

But I do like it, plus I like the idea of it and I like the idea of Tilda Swinton, if that makes sense.

I would probably say the same of Rossy de Palma’s ELdO scent.

Was too busy at work yesterday to post, but wore Eau Premiere and got a “you smell good” right away in the morning, which is always a nice way to start the day.
Today I’m in VCA Bois d’Iris, many sprays because I love it. When my decant is gone I will definitely be buying a bottle.
I’m off work now til Friday and will spend it writing a paper. This is the final week of my research writing class and the final project is an 8-10 page paper.? It’s been a lifetime, or 3, if you consider the fact that I’ve had 3 kids in the time since I last wrote a paper that long. I love doing research, but writing? Not so much. I’d like to finish strong since I have a good grade going. Then a break from classes til January. Woo hoo.

I hope the surgery goes well for your family member, Robin. Certainly no need to apologize in my opinion. Perfume can wait, family is everything.☺️

Congrats on nearing the finish line (for now)!!! ?‍♀️?‍♀️ I feel you- we had to write an 11-15 page paper EVERY WEEK!!! I’m still undecided if I’m continuing with that program…

I always think wearing No 5 (edt) is going to get negative responses, but it’s oddly one of my more complimented perfumes!

I really like Eau Premiere, even though I’m not a Chanel No. 5 gal. My sister is…so I scored the Eau off her when she didn’t love it as much. Let me make a decant. Must find that thing…its here somewhere.

I love writing, but I find it terribly painful. Does that even make sense? (But doing the research? Love it and often find it hard to stop….)

Yes! I know exactly what you mean about writing. It takes me awhile to formulate the ideas in my head and then putting them on paper is not always a seamless transition from thought to word.
I love the research part too, and the internet has been a real game changer. Any one else remember the days of card catalogs and microfiche?

Yes you bet, and in the olden olden days I had to take the heavy bound journals down the elevator to the library basement to begin making photocopies, feeding in my dime per page, and coming out with the worst smeary light gray copies. Using the electronic resources now to download journal articles is absolutely the bee’s knees!

Interloans were the other big issue living down here…waiting 8 weeks for a thesis or book to arrive from an American library.

One of my favorite papers in college was a little pass/fail thing that was basically teaching you how to use the 30 or so libraries on campus. Your paper was not on the topic, it was on your research of the topic. You had to do a big bibliography from a variety of libraries and sources, including original. I loved it.

Cons: Needing lots of hot coffee. Trying to avoid icy patches on the roads. Very disgruntled with the weather. Hoping no one ticks me off today because I just might give them the what for! The state park here in town got flooded out, so no place close to access electricity for my heater. ?

Pros: I’m in the lovely Casmir from a generous NSTer. A warm bagel is in my belly. Drinking lots of hot coffee. My four legged friend is undeterred in her search for fun, and is feeling quite frisky today. Off until Friday. Thinking about heading down to Fargo for some shopping.

Also, looking forward to my decant of Winter Palace. The name is quite appropriate for the temps here. Even locals are dismayed by such cold temps so early in the season. The benchmark number here seems to -40F. As long as temps are above that, it’s just “Chilly.” ?

Femininite du Bois from the sample bowl. Barely enough spritzes left but I can get a nice whiff.

Seeing Zombieland: Double Tap today for our Tuesday movie. It’s been awhile, since so few movies have been of interest. Then a stop at Trader Joe’s and then my knitting group tonight. I only have one thing to turn in….feeling kind of guilty.

Seem to have hit a plateau on the weight loss front. I haven’t been horrible, but neither have I been as focused. Two weeks w/o loss….we will see what happens tomorrow….my guess is flat again. Gotta shake things up.

Again I am pretty much opposite the CP because I had the urge for ylang ylang today after using my Klorane ylang ylang shampoo. I went for the richest ylang ylang I have, Perris Monte Carlo Ylang Nosy Be. I wish it came in a travel spray.

Yay twin! I also wish it came in a travel spray. I thought (very) briefly about doing a split but was feeling lazy. It doesn’t really register as ylang to me, but more a woody vanilla, and one of the very few vanilla-centric perfumes I enjoy.

Wow, it’s ylang ylang overdose to me in the best way! And it smells extraordinarily like my shampoo. I have also thought of a bottle split but am too lazy to go for it.

Also, I just got to remembering I have a bottle of discontinued Guerlain AA Ylang & Vanille that might be really similar to the Perris. I’ll have to do a side by side comparison. Have you tried that one?

Scent at bedtime last night: Le Jardin de Monsieur Li. I’ve liked it when I’ve tried it before, but last night I wasn’t terribly into it. It wasn’t bothering me to the point that I got up.

Scent this morning: Un Jardin sur le Toit. I seem to be getting some vegetable garden in there, but basically I like it. I sprayed it on because I thought my folks had left the house to go vote, but they’re still hanging around. Go vote, parental units, go vote!

It was always Mom who was very insistent I do my civic duty and vote, so I got in the habit from her example. The districts in Pennsylvania were very gerrymandered for a while, but they’re drawn more evenly now.

Anyway, Mom and Dad and I all voted today. :)

After I read reviews of Un Jardin sur le Toit, I felt like I was getting some of the fruity/floral aspects of the fragrance, too. But I can see how “cut grass,” “basil,” and “compost” notes would give me associations with vegetables. Cut grass and basil are notable summer scents in our yard.

Scent of the evening: L’Artisan Oeillet Sauvage. (Thank you, Katsura!) I like it. Dad has been sneezing this evening, but I’ll blame that on the on-and-off allergy/cold issues he’s been having lately.

About not-appreciated perfume: I thought I was getting a complaint about my perfume (Musc ravageur that day, it’s a lot…) when I congratulated a co-worker on his birthday the other day. He said: ‘you are so strong…’ , and I thougt ‘smelling’ would follow. But he actually meant my arm muscles ???

Good wishes for your week, Robin! Commando as I had a bad start to the day and didn’t want a bad association with a perfume. We’re having to cut down a 70 year old oak that has branches over a big portion of our house. The tree surgeon says it is climate change and a beetle imported from Asia. So sad.

That is sad. There is an giant pine next to a rough track I walk on up on the hill and every storm it loses a heavy branch which falls across the track. Last week I went past and it has been chain sawed down to a 6 foot high stump and it actually brought tears to my eyes. I gave it a pat and told it it had been a good friend as I had known it for twenty years. Trees are so special

I think someone shoukd design an exercise motivatir bed duvet that is time preset programmed to start feeling damp and cold to prevent snuggling up in the morning.

He also makes it with fresh ginger..

He is a chemist, so the one time I was observing he turned and said to me “this is the right time to add the cinnamon because at this temperature it will release its natural oils”

I am in DSH’s Oeillets Rouges, always a favorite.

I smelled an iris perfume in the halls this morning, maybe VCA Bois d’Iris, but more likely Prada Infusion d’Iris… just nice powdery iris over a woody base – it was very brief, didn’t get a really good sniff.

I’m not doing the CP today because yesterday I received my Memo discovery set in the mail. These are perhaps the most beautifully packaged samples I have ever seen with the black and gold bottle designs on the covers of the little folders. I’m trying African leather this morning and like it a lot, but perhaps not quite as much as French leather (with rose) which I tried last night. Looking forward to going to the opera “Saul” tonight by Handel (really it’s an oratorio but it’s being given a very avant-garde performance that has earned rave reviews). It’s a rarely done work and exciting to get to see it. I do have a couple of candidates for the CP for later this week. Robin, I join others in hoping things go well on your loved one’s surgery. The techniques seem to have improved so much especially for dealing with pain and nausea that I think you can be optimistic about it.

Chypre Mousse arrived yesterday ( ordered Oct 20 so not bad) so I am wearing that for the first time before heading out to the hill on a walk. I am enjoying it a lot…it is quite a busy perfume at the moment with mint and fennel, but it’s only five minutes since I sprayed. Blind Buy success . I have been away for a week and during that time many of the roses and the hawthornes have flowered in the graveyard, lots of rowan trees and also ash…the flowers on the ash have a kind of sweaty sock scent. I have a couple of samples with my CM order, but only two from my request list of forest scents
I hope the surgery goes smoothly Robin and recovery is uncomplicated.

There’s zero reason not to love this!

In other news, NJ Transit truly is the pits. Going home, a big chunk of rush hour trains were delayed (not even sure why) and they also have not changed the digital clocks back. What’s up with that?

If anyone is interested in the 2nd set of Hermessence travel spray split, please email me. $46.48 plus exact shipping. I may need to defer getting this second set since I am planning to go to the boutique tomorrow to fulfill the first set

This morning, I tried to mail 2 bill payments in my walk to the office. All of the mailboxes (at least 8) were locked tight! I had to drop them off at my office building’s mail slot which usually means a one day delay. Ugh. These are the signs of the times.

Macy’s holiday windows are in progress. If I have time tomorrow morning, I will take pre-reveal pics!

Was a busy morning. My mother had a dentist appointment and had to keep our year and a half old Lab puppy from chewing everything. Labs have an extended puppy hood. If your shoes aren’t high enough up, she will destroy them. She has all these toys but goes after shoes. Spent the morning in MKK but haven’t figured out a work perfume yet. Sephora let me know that I still haven’t picked my birthday sample out yet and on the 7th I can get 10% off my order. I might get a Tocca roller ball.

Weirdo scent of today is Hyde, which i got in the swapmeet. I one had a tiny spritz and it held up until the evening shower. When the smoke has gone its quite cuddly, but i need no more than a sample.

Doing an at-work sniff-off, possibly my first: Bois d’Iris on one arm and Orchidee Vanille on the other. Both have politely left the room by lunch-time – maybe I smell the latter a bit more, being more sensitive to vanilla.

Olfactif shipment arrived today, so I am in two weirdo: The Zoo Carré Blanc and ELDO Une Amourette. Both have iris, though, so i’m happy.

I took the day off to frantically grade student projects, but I keep getting interrupted by emails from students who are asking for higher grades. Who is teaching them this habit? I appreciate students who advocate for themselves, but we now seem to be a society that just asks for things we haven’t earned.

Iris will give me the stamina to stand up for learning!

Ha! I’ve been teaching for 14 years, and it’s definitely on the rise. In most cases, we have a conversation, they slow down and actually read my feedback, and we move on. But the cultural shift is worrying to me. As a teacher, it makes me feel like a grade factory (and justifier) rather than an educator.

    Bubblegum Chic.
Now… why on earth did I buy this sample? Tuberose is my nemesis! I betcha somebody somewhere waxed lyrical about it in such a way that I decided I could ignore the fact that this is a tuberose fragrance. As such, I can see the appeal.

It’s gray, foggy and quite cold here, but I’m warm in SSS Champagne de Bois. Got a late start on the perfume front after an early morning doctor’s appt. Some yucky tests are in the offing, might need to console myself with new perfume. Although I did just buy a new TV…(Merry early Christmas to me!)

    BeauFort London “1805 Tonnèrre”.

    Top: lime, smoke and gunpowder;
    Mid: blood, brandy and sea water;
Base: amber, balsam fir and cedar.

I recall getting a sample of this from Bloom’s when BeauFort was young, and it was pretty growly stuff with gunpowder and blood notes. This is from the Discovery set (as Hajusuuri intuited yesterday) and either my tastes have broadened or they calmed it down a notch. My 7.5ml is almost gone and it might be a while before I replace it – simply because I have So Much Stuff – but it definitely suits the project. :^)
