Monday scent of the day 10/21

Posted by Robin on 21 October 2019 262 Comments

It's Monday. Birthdays today: Dizzy Gillespie and Ursula Le Guin. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am out of town and commando. It is just possible I might manage some perfume shopping today.

Reminder: on 10/25, for International Artist's Day, match a fragrance with an artist or work of art, and tell us about it!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I would love to do some perfume shopping today. Hope you are having a good time, Robin.

My SOTD is Jubilation 25, I put on a little too much. I have not had any complaints yet, but that might just be out of politeness ;)

I’m wearing Samsara from a decant. I always forget how much I like this one between wearings. I really should get a full bottle, which are cheap as chips.

SOTD is OJ Woman, after it was mentioned as a good forest-y scent yesterday. Retried a bunch of SSSs over the weekend, and found that I like them better sprayed very lightly. Tabac Aurea came out the frontrunner in that experiment.

    Have fun shopping Robin!

This weeks CP should be fun..

Speaking of art, last night my neighbor had me over to watch a film by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, called Never Look Away. In German with subtitles.

I am in Alahiiiiiiine today, but the solid perfume. I prefer to the liquid. I wore it yesterday and I can still smell it on me today.

    Hmmm..a painting to match Alahine..maybe a Chagall..something like this https://images.app.goo.gl/D2RdNo24QnvdtMGKA

The Lives of Others was superb. Subtle, sad and nuanced. I don’t think that Hollywood would be able to make such a movie. Too many grey areas of humanity.

I’m wearing the beautiful First Cut.

Anyone have good recommendations for a scent-free hand lotion? I’ve finally found a really good moisturizing one (Burt’s Bees honey and grapeseed) but find the honey scent really takes over my perfume for a couple hours.

        Calypso,
I can watch Now Voyager over and over. Then The Letter, then Dark Victory, followed up by Watch Along the Rhine.
A Bette Davis day got me through a deep depression years ago.
Douglas Sirk, you bet. Imitation of Life.

Today is Carrie Fishers’ birthday for all you Star Wars fans.

If you like Clark Gable, try San Francisco. It’s a good one – great earthquake sequence. When you get to the holiday season, definitely watch The Bishop’s Wife with Loretta Young, Cary Grant and David Niven. It’s wonderful.

I grew up on the old movies, so too many to recommend. Laura is a good noirish melodrama, with an incredible theme song.

I LOVE Love and Crime! It was this years’ birthday present to myself! :) I can’t think of anything specific to compare it too….but think gourmand sweet CAKE!

On my skin I get the most vanilla angel food cake, glazed with a citrus sugary top. It’s a very true to life smell! I really don’t get much cocoa like some do. ONE SPRAY is a gracious plenty on my skin too….it’s a parfum extrait! I spray one spritz in the air and walk thru it…..

I really do like it – there is a crisp sharp Iris note in the opening that is my favorite part. No powder, all green no carrot . I just can’t tell how long the drydown lasts.’ I am somewhat anosmic to many musks. So I keep reapplying joyously! It reminds me of Le Cri w/o the rose at a much better price point. I will readily admit that I am not an expert.

I went back to sleep after the kid’s were off this morning. This is always a mistake. I woke up from a nightmare, and must have been grinding my teeth because my broken tooth is now more broken. Today would be a perfect hibernation day, but I am off to work. Sotd is my old friend, Alien leather version.

I went with Bottega Veneta Eau de Velours today. I believe this sample was courtesy of the ever generous Hajusurri.
EdV seems fairly similar to the orginal. Still very pretty with great longevity. Guess I’ll need to do a smackdown to see if I can sniff out the differences.

I am in your situation. The problem is that I’ll have to take leave to have time to do that, and I couldn’t bear to waste vacation days for such drudgery. A day only has so many hours and I’m the gardener and the cook, which I like (former) and don’t begrudge (latter). But I’m a terrible housewife and organizer.

I forgot to comment that we saw Victor Victoria and “10” yesterday. Both are very funny. I thought 10 might seem more dated but it held up quite well. Blake Edwards was quite the master at slapstick, physical comedy.

I’m wearing L’Attesa today since I’ve been trying to decide whether or not to buy a bottle while Indigo Perfumery is having their sale. I think I’ve successfully talked myself out of buying it – not because I don’t love the perfume. I do love it. But I only need a spray to each arm and one to the chest because it’s quite strong. So my little decant should last me a while longer. I also recall hearing that they’ll be releasing travel sprays at some point. Hopefully, by the time I finish my decant, the travel spray will be available.

I spent a lot on perfume last quarter, so I’m trying to be more mindful of my buying.

A travel spray? Their bottles are already only 35mls, hardly seems worth it. But I guess if you only use a little…. I only buy 3ml decants of certain things I only want to wear once or twice a year.

Yes, 10ml. It’s worth it to me because of how little I wear the same perfume coupled with how few sprays I need of this one. I Am also trying to be considerate of my buying. Trust me, I’m tempted to buy the full bottle!

Had a counseling appointment today and spent a half an hour on the phone to take care of a bill. The website was being a butt for some reason. I woke up no 5 but been commando since 8 this morning. Last night, I was curious to see if I could get just a mini from Andy Tauer’s website but it was a no go, I have to get a full bottle of something. I keep meaning to get a bottle of Rose Flash but keep backing out for some reason. Probably because I am supposed to be on a no buy. Good news is that my dogs are getting a double Barkbox in the mail today and they are going to lose their minds over it. I don’t double the Barkbox too often. I think I will wear vintage BaV today.

I’m lingering over breakfast, very glad I don’t need to go out right now, there is not only heavy rain, but hail!
I’ll need something warming when I do go out a bit later, maybe Safran Troublant.

Buy the $50 puffer coat from

I am wearing Narciso Rodriguez Santal Musc from a decant and I like it a lot! It’s linear, but creamy and warm and it has some staying power.

Robin, did you smell anything worth mention and have you bought anything?

I did get shopping but did not get to the perfume, sorry! It has been a very poor year for perfume shopping in general — too many other things going on.

That’s not a bad thing. With the amount of perfume some of us have, skipping a year or two without buying and resisting the temptation is a positive thing in the end!

It’s overcast and gloomy today. I’m staying inside and wearing Desarmant.

I’ve been looking at those L’Artisan amber balls for a couple of years now but just can’t bring myself to pay the asking price. Anyone here have experience with them? Are they worth it?

A sweet looking bottle has caused me to buy perfume that I probably wouldn’t have if the juice was in something utilitarian. That was in my early days. I think that I am beyond that now. ?

I have a few of those – nice bottles but NEVER wear. I did actually have a decant of Black Perfecto before buying the bottle, so I knew I liked it well enough to wear on occasion.

Late check in today, for no good reason. Started out in Jacomo #08, which faded quickly, so went to Noir Epices. M’kay, now we’re rolling.

I have a small pork loin braising in the oven. It’s the Italian method of slowly cooking it in whole milk. Never tried it before, so we shall see.

Interesting. I’m married to the mob (Just joking, but my last name ends with a vowel) My MIL was a phenomenal cook but never made it with milk. Of course, she didn’t care much for dairy except ice cream so that may explain it. Do you know which part of italy the recipe hails from? So curious..

Hi Petunia! The recipe (which was delicious) comes from All About Braising, by Molly Stevens. I can’t recommend this cookbook highly enough. Her recipes are very detailed and accurate.
Anyway. The recipe intro credits Marcella Hazan, and states it is a Bolognese recipe. There are a lot of versions floating around…Stevens mentions that cooks from the Veneto marinate the pork overnight in white wine and vinegar. I found a version that adds nutmeg, which sounds great.

This link isn’t very pretty, but it’s the recipe from the book:

      Enjoy!

Totally exhausted after a bad night’s sleep (courtesy of snoring husband who of course feels happy and rested, why am I so grouchy he asks?), a trip to Costco (had to haul everything in myself because he tripped and hurt his knee), the dish soap leaked into the car floor mats (so then I had to wash them in the driveway), and just after we returned from Costco my SIL dropped in for an hourlong chat, uninvited (I despise people who drop in and impose on your time, as if you had nothing else planned for your day). Why yes I’m feeling quite cranky. Husband is banished to the couch tonight and I have drenched myself in HG Dilettante.

    SOTD = Jorum Studio Trimerous

Powdery, musky, vanillic, herby, vetiver, and fougere-like orris with a tinge of hay / tobacco. Absolutely delightful! This was what I finally picked up from FedEx after it had taken several rides inside a FedEx truck. The box looked beat up but the inside was very well padded with packing peanuts, the bottle inside a foam cutout inside a sturdy green box. It was yesterday’s SOTD and here was the IG post:

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B32Ut_yhFB2/?igshid=1w9m52dxhz6hl

In other news, I heard from Brenda, the new owner of Sonoma Scent Studio, and she basically reiterated what a number of people here said: it’s a pre-order and will ship in November. She offered to refund my money if I could not wait ?. Not happy with the tone of her email but I’ll see how things progress once the it’s operationally BAU.

I was attending a conference today and walked to the venue from Penn Station. I witnessed a sanitation worker having seizures (looks like epileptic as opposed to cardiac but I’m not a medical professional) on the ground while his co-worker thought he was faking it and yelled at him to stop. It was quite upsetting to witness as I walked by (I was in the other side of the street) and I asked one of the people who just stood there to watch if he was aware of 911 being contacted and he said he thinks so. At that point, I had nothing more to contribute and so I moved on. I hope the worker is ok. On a nicer end, I won a drawing for 1 of 10 $50 Amazon gift card. Looks like I can spend double that and consider it perfumath free ?.

From Sunday night: my skin had gotten very dry because I hadn’t brought any body lotion with me on our trip to New York state. I slathered on some baby lotion when I went to bed. I woke up a couple of times, and tried to figure out a fragrance that wouldn’t clash with the remaining scent of baby lotion. I thought Fresh Sugar Lychee did relatively well at not clashing. A few hours later I put on a bit of The Different Company Osmanthus. I think by the time I got up for the day today, I had kind of a fruity-sweet-powdery combo going, with perhaps a bit of muskiness from all the half-asleep mixing. lol

I’ll likely experiment with some other fragrance at bedtime tonight. This time I have an unscented moisturizing lotion on, so I don’t have to worry about clashing there. :)

I mentioned it here very late last night on the weekend post. We went to Cold Spring for the wedding of a cousin of mine. It’s a long drive for us. We drove up Friday. The wedding was Saturday. My cousin and his bride had beautiful weather for their day. The wedding and reception sites were very scenic — absolutely lovely. It was nice to catch up with a number of relatives. We came home on Sunday. We were exhausted.

Scent of the late evening: Farmacia Ss. Annunziata Vaniglia del Madagascar. Just one spray was plenty. It’s far more concentrated than many of the fragrances I use. I may add a chocolate fragrance to it later, or the LUSH Cardamom Coffee. For now I’m good, though. I find vanilla scents soothing. Among other things, Petunia sent me a number of vanilla samples in the freebiemeet. (Thank you, Petunia! Such an assortment of neat things to try!) I’ve got to get together with my friends who like sniffing different perfumes to try those. :)
