Tuesday scent of the day 9/10

Posted by Robin on 10 September 2019 198 Comments

It's Tuesday and Karl Lagerfeld's birthday. (And, the swapmeet is still open for another week!) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm protecting myself from bad vibes in Aftelier Candide. Tea at the moment is a Colombian Tippy Organic from Upton with a dash of roasted cacao nib.

Reminder: On 9/13, protect yourself from bad (Friday the 13th) juju with a Fierce Force Field Fragrance. Adapted from a suggestion by chocolatemarzipan.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: Sadly, Donkey Products in Germany no longer makes the Pret-a-Portea tea bag set (which also included Donatella), but they have lots of others in case you'd like Audrey Hepburn, Frida Kahlo, Angela Merkel or Santa floating in your teapot.

I tried Jaipur many years ago. A nice fruity/floral scent heavy on plum and peach notes. I liked it at that time, but I need to try it again. Not sure if it was discontinued or reformulated.

    Good Morning,
I am drinking some black tea (no name earl grey) and a good book while we are having our bathroom plastered at the moment. While on vacation our upstair neighbor had a leak. Of course we didn’t know that while we were away and came home to a rotting ceiling. This is apartment living folks

I saw one upon a time in hollywood over the weekend. I feel like all the theaters in NYC are closing..we are heading into a new era

    SOTD Encan Mythique.
This doesn’t give me a “force field” vibe, but more of a perfume that takes me off someplace other than NYC. So maybe being transported somewhere else can help protect you.

Apartment living, indeed. Sorry about your ceiling!

Someone in my building burned their toast this morning (I could smell it) and set off the smoke detector. Always makes me a little nervous when those things happen…

You’ll enjoy this little exchange I had last week: My oldest is off at college now, and she called last week to tell me that her ceiling has a water leak from the bathroom above hers. She tells me, “They haven’t told me what hotel or other room they are moving me to while they come fix it.”

HA HA HA HA HA I told her that no one gets moved while they make repairs! You get outta the way while they fix it and keep on living your life! :) Ah, the life of a newly independent and clueless young woman…..

lTSG, you smell transported- speaking of which we just saw the same movie and really enjoyed it!! Not what we thought – we, cough cough and in a gr8 way! That was also like being transported! What did you think? It took us a bit to wrap our heads around it but I will see it again when it comes to on demand! There is a PHENOMENAL wiki link on it! I will find it for you.

Today I chose B de Boucheron, which I received from a freebiemeet. This is a really nice transitional scent into fall, although in Texas we are still in summer, both technically and heat-wise.

I am jealous, because we are in deep transition. It is too hot for long pants and air feels too weird and clammy for shorts.

But I cannot remember B Boucheron at all! I know I tried it.

B is lovely in warm weather, a really pretty, perfume-y osmanthus. In cool weather, in my opinion, a big nothing. I sampled it in the summer, and didn’t get a bottle until winter, and thought, why did I want this?

It’s finally cooled off here, although it’s supposed to warm up again by the weekend. I’m thinking of it as another opportunity to wear my hot-weather perfumes I’ve neglected this year.

Annnnd BOOM! it’s summer again overnight, shaping up to be a hot and humid day. Wearing my beloved Seville l’Aube and drinking rather mediocre coffee from our emergency back up stash – our preferred French Roast requires a trip to Costco (an hour’s drive) and I’m not up for it.

Went to a therapy session today and boy, did I not want to get out of bed this morning. I was so comfortable. Picked up more hours for this week and next week so I have spending money for my staycation and the new Tauer might be in the cards for my birthday. I wore Jicky for my appointment and since that has faded, I am in Kyoto since it’s humid and pretty warm out.

I’m wearing Fico d’India from Fumerie’s fall sample pack. I have liked all of them, but I think this one is FB worthy. Apparently fico d’India has nothing to do with fig, it is the prickly pear cactus that is supposed to have healing powers in its juice, so it fits in nicely with the community project.

So glad I broke out the Molinard: it’s just delightful when you realize the cheapish bottle you already own ticks the same box as that expensive niche sample you were contemplating…

D.S. and Durga Durga – a good vibes tuberrose forcefield – :-) I love this stuff, and was afraid I might have oversprayed this morning, but my office mate has completely different olfactory responses than I do – she says she can barely smell anything. :-)

She does notice when I wear Mitsouko, tho, and always says, “oh, you are wearing the one that smells so good!”

I have generated a list of best ever scents, and this one is on it. It makes me happy every time I wear it – it’s like, “I am surrounded by beauty, there are no problems that can take that away…”

I really like the area. Haven’t seen any questionable people hopped up on meth or crack. Public restrooms, river park, and public areas are immaculate with a noticeable absence of vomit, feces, and needles/syringes. Very clean, well kept town. ?? The hospital is quite nice, clean, and well stocked with personnel and equipment. They are currently building a much larger, state of the art facility right next door. ??

I’m in another evaporating decant, though luckily this one isn’t evaporating at a completely alarming rate like some others. Today it’s Mona di Orio Violette Fumée, which is perfect for this cooler grey drizzly day. I’m afraid I oversprayed a little though because I forgot how strong this is. I think it’s a really wonderful perfume – lavender and earthy violets with powdery, slightly smoky suede. Check out Angela’s great review from 2013.

Can we also take a moment to lament the lack of a good editor on emails sent from some brands these days. I got an email from Diptyque yesterday that made this error: “THE CITY CANDLE’S ARE EN ROUTE!” There’s also a clothing brand that regularly has grammatical errors in their emails. They’re nowhere near as big as Diptyque, but I still think surely someone on their staff should be catching those errors.

Don’t get me started. I could rant forever about the lack of editorial scrutiny and the simply horrific grammar by so-called professionals.

You know you care about this too much when you see a sign at Whole Foods that says “10 items or fewer” and it makes you smile that it’s not “10 items or less.”

My high school English teacher was a very strict grammarian and drilled into us that “due to” should only follow a being verb. So starting a sentence with “due to” instead of “because of” would get you red marks. I think I now avoid using that phrase altogether, lol!

“Which” versus “that” is a good one too.

One of my husband’s pet peeves is the use of “any number of”… He claims it’s grammatically incorrect unless you are implying infinity, and should be either “a number of” or “any OF a number of”. ? It makes sense to me but no one follows that rule and it’s a pretty accepted phrase.

          • LizzieB says:
            10 September 2019 at 3:41 pm

It’s like “anywayS”. Language is always changing….

(Come to think of it, I think I’ve only used your husband’s phrase example when I’m thinking of an infinite number….)

That was good. I’ve also read several of John Baugh’s linguistics books. If I am remembering right, in one he said it wasn’t tragic that many people were saying “literally” when they meant something metaphorically. It was a linguistic shift. I give that linguistic shift the side-eye. He also said that young executives were using phrasing like, “What’s the ask?” and “What’s the solve?” I shuddered. But his books are very informative.

Some of this stuff sounds like the really bad video game translations that came out in the 80’s and 90’s. The most notorious is “All Your Base Are Belong To Us”.

          • neyronrose says:

Corporate culture seems to encourage workers to change nouns into verbs when there are perfectly good phrases that have the meaning they want and are much better grammatically.

With institutions, you can see that their spiffy new concept may be the same thing they did five or ten or twenty years ago, but with all-new buzzwords. Although I remember “new math,” but don’t know what “Singapore math” is.

I learned “All Your Base Are Belong To Us” when I discovered TV Tropes and then got lost in it for four or five days. I know there are certain translations that have worked their way into gamer culture, and even into Millennial vocabulary. English is a difficult language to learn if you don’t grow up with it, people tell me. Apparently the Romance languages make much more sense grammatically.

I see so many stray apostrophes and quote marks floating around where they shouldn’t be. A store doesn’t need to have quote marks around the name of a product. They just need to have the name of the product. But you know that.

Knowledge of the difference between plural and possessive has been lost by a big swathe of the population, apparently. My brother and sister-in-law put a brass plaque on their front door reading “Lastname’s.” I was horrified that my brother didn’t know the difference. He’s lucky that none of his tattoos are misspelled. About a year later, I told my brother, “It should be ‘Lastnames.’ It’s a plural, not a singular possessive. Sorry. Today I didn’t have the restraint it took not to tell you that.”

    Happy Tuesday!

    1) Spent weekend in Seattle- and boy oh boy did our rain return! In Seattle, there over 1200 lightening strikes, plenty of thunder and of course, rain!

    2) While at Essenza, I tried a lovely old fashioned perfume called Yours Truly by Maria Lux. It’s all white florals with aldehydes, so very simple, but it’s incredibly pretty!

    2) Am in Prim Botanicals Body Oil and Dove Rose deodorant- I did my Pilates this morning, so only time to shower and go! But the Botanicals Oil is a subtly spicy scent on it’s own and Dove Rose deo is actually powdery and lovey!

Yes❣️ I got my partial bottle last night.

In response to yesterday’s comments…I’ve done a red package week, not just red bottle. ..could be a good project (red bottles only). And as for the conference rooms, I will put in a request but will not push hard; ultimately, the people barging in are so oblivious an a sign will not stop them.

And ho ho ho in September for me as I was baaaad at Bergdorfs. I also ended up buying three jars of a discontinued La Mer cream (Perfecting Treatment) which IMHO is the single best primer for me. I mix it with SPF 50 sunscreen and that combination works very well under light foundation.

Basenotes splitter. Generally, you have to buy at least 50% of the volume but sometimes. you can get lucky when more than half had already been split and the splitter is willing to part with the bottle. With this one, I jumped on it right at the beginning when it was still on pre-order.

We’ve progressed from the high 90-degree days to the low 90-degree days here in Houston and believe me I can tell and appreciate the difference. Storms are not forecast for this afternoon but it’s starting to look ominous. I’m in the candy-sweet but still enticing Isvarya. Bought Mom a cake for her birthday tomorrow. Last night Chinatown was on some cable channel and I felt so drawn in and compelled to watch it. I can’t believe it is now 45 years old! I saw it when it first came out. Yes I’m even older than it…. It is every bit as brilliant as ever, a perfect film imho. The music is still haunting me.

I just read (via Huff post Link) a hilarious article about Rhianna’s friends supposedly raving about her “magical smell” and what perfume could possibly be that good.
Silly me, I thought Rhianna would crow about her own fragrance in response, but, according to the article, it is actually By Killian Love, Don’t Be Shy. (
The article’s author tried the scent, thought it was too sweet and was told by a friend that she smelled like she face planted into a massive pez dispenser.
I hope By KIllian is paying Rhianna a fortune for the plug.

I stared at the tea accessory(?) pictured above for a while, and decided that it was something that I didn’t know enough about to appreciate. My morning drink was completely normal, lychee juice without any floating dolls(?) with sunglasses in it.

Around here we’re officially in the season of pumpkin-spice-flavored everything. I rather like pumpkin muffins, and pumpkin pudding as our local grocery store makes it. I’m not so much a fan of tea with that kind of flavoring, and I’ve tried a few sorts. With the weather getting cooler, I do appreciate a warm drink more, so it becomes my season for drinking chai.

I’ve heard that SPAM is really popular in Hawaii. That may be a place that that combination exists. Purely speculation. Then again, it may exist down South.

SPAM is very much loved in Hawaii. They even make sushi from it. I had a friend from there in college, and I learned a few oddball facts about her home state. ??

I heard that spam sushi (it’s cooked) is a favourite snack of Hawaii-born Barack Obama.

I used Google, and found out that the picture above is a tea bag with a caricature of Karl Lagerfeld. I’m sure I lose points on some scale for failing to recognize Karl Lagerfeld on sight. I was like, “Baron Samedi? But the ghede are associated with rum…” Sometimes my frame of reference is very, very different.

Then again, I’m currently wearing a T-shirt that reads “Cthulhu for president. Why choose the lesser evil?” Cthulhu is wearing a Nixon-like blue suit, and his little gray fingers are pointing in “V-for-victory” signs.

Anyway, the Donatella tea bag was cute. And now I can appreciate Robin’s cleverness in putting together the themes of the designer and tea.

Not pumpkin flavored, but I saw maple flavored Oreos recently. Wasn’t at all tempted. Nope, nope, nope.

lol. Well, I was much more happy than horrified to learn that such a thing as fried Twinkies exists. More on the subject, I was delighted to learn that in Canada you can get many, many food products flavored with maple syrup.

I was too cheap to buy pumpkin spice Oreos. If they coming sale, I will buy one (so still too cheap to buy it at full price ?).

For me, vetiver scents are calming and soothing. That’s got to keep some of the bad vibes away!

SOTD = Timbuktu again. Smells so good right now!

The main notes I get from it are: incense, loads of vetiver, and a bit of green mango. And in that order. I’d say that Timbuktu is a similar “weight” perfume to Fat Electrician.

Interesting, I would have said Timbuktu was at least 1-2 steps heavier! So now I need to do a wrist test.

Well, I just couldn’t resist the more potent version of Woman in the Elixir line, but have promised to save it for my birthday. So many beautiful scents were there….

My apologies for an incomplete posting – my daughter interrupted me with an emergency and I diverted my focus to her. I meant to add:
We met Linda Pilkington and she is charming, funny, warm and as irresistibly likable as she is a superstar perfumer!
She brought most of her line to the event, including the new Elixir products for us to sample.
The bottles are beautiful in person, I really wanted to hold them as well as own a few of them. She had multiple sizes and the larger bottle of Woman (even the color of that liquid is pretty) was truly tempting. She spoke to the group and signed purchased fragrances, I think that we will see an article appear on this very soon by one of our favorite bloggers.

I way-oversprayed Paris-Venise tonight as my bottle arrived yesterday. It’s kind of a force-field around me right now.

I don’t think it’s a force field as it is doesn’t have any lasting power on me but I’m in a sample of elixir de Marseilles today.
I also wore a sample of twilly yesterday and had the same problem.

Does anyone else find hermes scents lovely but they just vanish on skin?

Jour, 24, Faubourg, Ambre Narguile, and Vetiver Tonka (very generously applied) stick around for a good six hours, but pretty much every other Hermes I’ve tried is gone in no time. That iris perfume oil Hermessence is one of the most gorgeous things I’ve ever smelled, but at that price I’m not going to reapply it every hour.

Wearing Houbigant Orangers en Fleurs, as a sudden cool spell for some reason made me want to smell like late spring.
