Wednesday scent of the day 8/28

Posted by Robin on 28 August 2019 196 Comments

Hump Day, plus a few author birthdays: Rita Dove, Janet Frame, Robertson Davies. What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with the reasonably frivolous Gingerale from Demeter.

Reminder: 8/30 is National Slinky Day. Wear your most frivolous fragrance. Extra points if it's frivolous AND an enduring classic.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

And now testing Pacifica Beach Lavender Lemon and Enchanted Woods before hiding them downstairs in the Christmas pile. Ulta was having a sale and I started shopping. I also got Pacifica’s Target exclusive Moonray Bloom and tested that before it goes in the Christmas pile . Happy to see that Pacifica is making some new fragrances again.

Oh dear, no points for me again today – SOTD is 19 EDP. Supposed to be hot-hot-hot again today, but a little bit less than yesterday, and cooling off tomorrow (maybe even a sprinkle, they say!). Happy Friday Eve Eve, everyone. :)

In the remnants of some very early morning Eau du Sud. Will be leaving for the airport in a few hours in Champagne du Bois, which I’m pretty excited about! My bottle’s near empty but this seems like a proper occasion to drain it even further.

I’m wearing You or Someone Like You from a full bottle, which I got from one of Robin’s drawings. I really like the combination of citrus and mint on a hot and humid morning.

That one recently popped up as a scentbox option. Would you reccommend it to someone who loves the Merveilles line but isn’t usually hot on aquatic scents?

I like the Marveilles line overall. Bleue and Eau de Merveilles are definitely related, but the marine/ aquatic note is very pronounced on me. I am a marine perfume lover and I think you need to like aquatic notes to wear the Bleue.

Robin’s review here says the same, but a 2nd opinion is helpful! Probably best I stay away.

I know..i was not asked, but maybe a second opinion will help?

I love both the ‘original’ Merveilles and the bleue.

The bleue is salty and mineral-y, if that makes sense. So if that is what you disklike about aquatic, stay away.
Imho its not an aquatic like Cool water.

Its the only aquatic fragrance in my collection. And I think its because it has enough of that Merveilles DNA.
I usually wear it when its hot and humid.

More opinions welcome! Salty is fine (I like Womanity), it’s the ozone-“sporty” notes I can’t stand.

            Ah :)
well Its not sporty to/on me.

On fragrantica there are more reviews from people who usually dislike the aquatic genre, but like or love this one.
            So maybe worth a try/sample?

Hey Dorsey, i would be happy to send you a small atomizer sample or even a manufacturer’s sample if I spot one in my stash. I love it. As jiji said, it is more mineral than aquatic.

Robin, you are stealing my heart with all these hummingbirds pictures. The girls are fattening themselves up these days before they leave next month and it is so much fun to watch. We have 2 males here still and there is arial combat all daylong.
SOTD: Profumum Ambra Aurea because the weather feels autumn-ish .
Oh is this a beautiful perfume. My first wear. This is a rich, deep and sweet amber.

The expert at our local seed store told me that the adult hummingbirds leave on their trip south before the juveniles do; the juveniles fly unchaperoned. Who knew?

They leave late, probably fly high all night, drinking and whatnot, and then sleep until the afternoon. Drives the adults crazy.

Maybe the old ones need to leave earlier because their old arthritic wings aren’t as fast? So they all get there at the same time. Or see Oakland Fresca’s suggestion above.

I love hummingbirds. Where I am in SoCal they are always around me. during dark days when I could barely hoist myself out of bed ( divorce drama) my beloved therapist would tell me if I could find the beauty and life in something so small as a hummingbird, maybe I could hold on another day. I have held on many, many more days, and grew and thrived and knew joy again.
When my therapist died unexpectedly, the paralyzing days and months after were broken by hummingbirds. Just because I couldn’t see him didn’t mean he wasn’t there.

Love Ambre Aurea. There’s an app (no affiliation) on the App Store called Texas Birds Sticker Pack. After downloading, the app appears on your toolbar (I have iPhone, and it’s only for iMessage). Then when you type a text, you click on the app thing (idk what the technical term is) and there’s all sorts of Texas birds, several varieties of hummingbirds) that can be clicked and dragged onto the text message. It’s a fun app.

A couple of friends had a commitment ceremony at a campground last weekend and I have decided that I’m not really a camping girl. I have lots of bug bites and I caught a cold from being in a tent on chilly nights. Wearing Marron Chic since I can still smell it a little bit and because I know it smells good in our current weather conditions. I got a bunch of samples from Luckyscent that I’m going to have to wait to test but they also included a card that mentions that there will be a NY Scent Bar location opening this fall. Can’t wait

I was overwhelmed by the size of the perfume catalog but then I began pouring reviews on Fragrantica and Reddit, as one does ;) , picked a few to sample and have been quite pleased. Lots of intriguing notes that offer a neat narrative for the scents…along w/ the creative names. They do lots of seasonal scents too.

Negative. ;) I ordered samples just after their Summer seasonal items debuted so most all the whipped soaps were depleted but I shall be lying in wait for whatever goodness comes out for Halloween and the fall. :) Interesting and creative narratives w/ the notes and names for their scents…and lots of autumn/East coast themed scents…a neat line that I happened upon from reading this blogger’s fragrance reviews (no affiliation) which I stumbled upon from googling some specific scent and then I began to looking up reviews on Fragrantica, etc. The blogger is really into indie perfumes. http://yuzusvanity.blogspot.com/ I have enjoyed reading her reviews and thoughts on many of hte indie lines…you may too. :)

Which samples did you get please? Looking forward to your thoughts. ??

        I got the following:
        Blackburn’s Parlor EDP
        Blossom Jam Tea Cakes EDP
        Chiffon EDP
        Estate Vanilla
        Rose Mallow Cream EDP
        Snowshoe Pass EDP
        Violet Mallow EDP
        White Feather
        Nightgown extrait
        Violet Truffle extrait

I have tried all except Violet Truffle. Now I have to figure which of the above I need more of, the others I should try next and what seasonal Halloween/autumn releases I should plan for too. The days are packed! ?

    Another hot and sweaty day,
I have to hurry and change quickly into a fresh non sweaty-outfit for dinner with friends
These women are former co-workers, from 3 jobs ago (so….almost 10 years ago) We don’t meet that often but when we do we (once a year) we have tons of fun. ?

In other news, I found a well-stocked Indian (South Asian) grocery near where I’m getting physical therapy. My back is a lot better, but hauling bottles of mango drink from the car to the house probably doesn’t help. Recently I got a bottle of lychee drink that said in the ingredients something like: Flavored with a molecule that tastes just like natural lychee.

With the weather having been so hot, I’ve been getting kulfi (ice cream) in various flavors. Mango and pistachio are self-explanatory. Last week, I got pistachio with saffron, and it turned out that I liked the plain pistachio quite a bit better.

I got falooda kulfi when I saw the rose design on it. When I looked closer later on, the design also included strands of noodles and seeds of some sort. I’m guessing the “falooda sev” is the noodles, as the breakdown on the ingredients said “corn flour.” The seeds are basil seeds. There’s also cardamom. Having little pieces of noodle in ice cream is different for me, but I like the combination of flavors.

I’m stumped as to what Chickoo is. That one lists sapota as an ingredient, which I think is a fruit. It also has “Chickoo flavor” and oils. I liked the flavor of the kulfi, but I’m still curious about what was in it. :)

Chikoo is a fruit. You can even make a smoothie with it.

Hello everyone. It is so humid today I had to go for something fresh and green so chose Miss Dior original.
We will be visiting the USA for the first time ever next week when we go to New Orleans. I’m so excited as it’s our belated honeymoon and we love jazz and history.

I’m hoping to finally do the community project this week.

New Orleans is a very fun and unique place with wonderful food. Be sure to visit Hove Perfumery and Bourbon French Perfumery, they’re both in the French Quarter just a few blocks apart (sorry to repeat if someone has already suggested this.)

Pacifica Sandalwood today. My no-brainerest perfume.

Looking forward to a book club tonight. We read Ill Will by Dan Chaon, a *very* dark psychological thriller set in the Cleveland suburb where I live. I could barely put it down. We’re a fairly new book club and some of our first few picks have been duds, so I’m excited to chat about a book that really grabbed me.

How can I not read a thriller set in a Cleveland suburb? Just ordered a used copy of the book from Abebooks (hear that Lovestosmellgood? $4.34 ;-) )

I went through a period where the only soap I used was Pacifica’s Sandalwood. Haven’t smelled it in years. I’ll find some to sniff next time I am at Wholefoods. The soap was lovely!

Pacifica Sandalwood has long been discontinued so you might not find it at Wholefoods…if you do you are very lucky! my health food store still carries all the current Pacificas but the Pacifica rep retrieved all the discontinued fragrances and would not allow the store to sell them anymore :(

Oakland Fresca, I worked at a secondhand bookstore several years ago and one of my tasks was posting books for sale on Abebooks and packaging orders for shipment. So I like to imagine that your copy is being processed and lovingly packaged at a local bookstore by someone like me :)

I know the carbon footprint of books being shipped about is not laudable, but I love reading real books, and the words never grow old, so who cares if the book is new or not?! I will now be thinking about the folks in the bookshops packing up the books!

Ack! Love Robertson Davies and was recently listening to “Murther and Walking Spirits” via audible. I read the book quite a while back, so now, considering my advanced age, listening to it is like a brand new story. Who says getting old doesn’t have some redeeming qualities?

Yesterday was a rainy, gloomy day, perfect for binge watching “Would I Lie to You?” I love “British” humor and I’m a bit fixated on David Mitchell. Alas, he out of my intellectual league by leaps and bounds. But, I did laugh out loud multiple times, and we all know how good laughter is for the soul.

I enjoyed l’Elephant so much yesterday, I’m wearing it again. The weather had done a complete 180 and it’s sunny and mild. Will be taking the baby T-Rex for a bike ride soon.

Cheers and Happy Hump Day! ✌?

Just looked up Would I Lie to You? and it looks like a fun one to watch. JustWatch says it’s available to stream on Prime, do you know if it’s on regular Amazon Prime or one of their British subscriptions? The subscription situation is getting ridiculous imho, everything I want to watch is on a sub I don’t have ? fwp.

      Glad you are enjoying l’Elephant!

I hear you about the subscription deal! I have started paying individually for seasons. Just bought Season 6 of Endeavour. WILTY has been around for almost a decade or more now. You can see earlier seasons on You Tube, and you may also be able to stream them through Prime without paying for a subscription, just by getting seasons or individual shows. I would try free YouTube episodes to see if you like it before spending anything. It’s the kind of humor frowned on here in the US, and it’s not for everyone. It’s the polar opposite of politically correct and No One- gender, class, culture- is out of bounds. If you DO happen to like it, I would recommend “8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown” which is a numbers and letters show that’s also been around to donkeys years, and quite funny as well.

Well, I thought this one would be frivolous, but it isn’t–the price alone (which I just looked up) will kill you in a most unfrivolous way!

I’m testing Guerlain’s Mon Precieux Nectar, which is more gourmand than I expected. Usually that sends me to the hills, but I think this perfume is gorgeous. I am not sure that it is “me”, whatever that means. But I will enjoy this decant while it lasts. I picked it up at one of StC’s recent sales.

Off topic update. My husband said goodbye to our son at college yesterday afternoon, and then took himself out to a local eatery and bar near the school. Says his best friend called out of the blue and he sat there blubbering and sobbing into the phone at the bar. He was laughing when he told me the story–but needless to say it is always interesting to learn new things about yourself and your spouse after 20+ years of marriage. I thought I was going to be a basket case and he was going to be all stiff upper lip about our son’s departure. Husband is flying home this morning. Wonders never cease!

Instead Mr. Marzipan was marching in and out of my son’s room all evening long! I am glad that your husband had his best friend to lean on…and you as well :)

My heart goes out to all of you going through this. The year that my 4th and last child went to university was the year that my oldest got married, my second left to do her masters and my third left on a co-op term. My husband also passed away that year, so within 4 months I went from a wife with 4 “children” at home to living in a totally empty house. I feel for all of you but all I can say is “this too shall pass” and you will not only survive but prevail.

Wanting to know how I was, I hadn’t called, etc… I said with a chuckle, “how long have I been gone?” He replied in a terribly plaintive voice, “eight days….”. I’ve always remembered that. I think it depends on the interpretation. Maybe a not so serious fragrance, that you don’t have to sit with and concentrate on to understand.
I interpreted it as something out of bounds of what I can reasonable afford. To each his own! :)

I was walking throug the old part of the university campus yesterday, all grey stone gothic buildings, when I turned into a courtyard where a magnificent magnolia was in full bloom. Its trunk was grey like the stone but the flowers were hot pink goblets against a royal blue sky. It was breath taking. The author Janet Frame grew up and lived in this part of the South Island and as a young woman was committed to an insane asylum close by…a terrible gothic building that was eventually destroyed by fire. She used to walk the gardens and look at a large magnolia , one of the few sparks of brightness in her world at that time. She was an incredible writer and she lived on my street for a while, her small house is still there – a very modest wooden house with a view of the valley. Her autobiography is terrific and Jane Campion made a film about her called An Angel at my Table. I don’t think she wore perfume
I am off to Auckland today and will see Waterdragon tomorrow and then I have to go to a black tie ( ba ha ha) arts award ceremony which is sponsored by Bollinger. Wearing Wander as it is fresh and easy

I remember watching the film many, many years ago. It’s an astonishing story and it was a beautiful film. Years later I read the trilogy that inspired it and was, again, very moved. It was so evocative and a welcome reminder how fallible doctors can be.
Is she still a well know writer in New Zealand? I mean, do the young still read her books?

Pleas say hello to Waterdragon. I hope she is well and still enjoying perfume. I miss her posts on NST.

Finally got here…..I’ve been up to my eyeballs in chart reviews and end-of-the-month tedium….

Wearing my forever love Prada Infusion d’Iris, which never fails to make me feel put together and professional…no matter how chaotic and crazy the real world really is! :)

Wearing Good Girl Gone Bad by Killian, but I think the chemo has messed up my sense of smell. I could only smell it for less than an hour.

This is fascinating, but no idea if it works or has other effects…

Maybe more about taste than smell though.

That is really interesting, Robin, thank you. While I was taking chemo my sense of taste was totally messed up but now that I have finished it has recovered. Hopefully my sense of smell will do the same thing.

Thanks again for the kind words, everyone. My second surgery was last week and I won’t know the results until Sept. 11, but I feel I am recovering nicely. I’m assuming I now just have to put radiation behind me and this whole thing can just be a bad memory.

I grabbed the closest frivolous scent I could find–a bottle of Lolita Lempicka Elle L’Aime. I smell like sweetish coconut lime good quality shower gel. Plus the bottle was less than fifteen bucks.

Camelia Chinois today. This has enourmous staying power for a greenish tea scent.
Today we plucked tomatoes in our garden, more than 5 pounds. And lots of peppers. Dinner at a nice pizzeria nearby with dining al fresco.

Nice temps here, but boy has it ever been gloomy and grey today.

SOTD = Soivohle Pachou Minimal, one of my favorites of the recently sampled scents from there. It would be a tough call to choose between this and Paracelsus for one of their 10mL bottles.

    SOTD = Mohur Extrait

Lovely and potent! This could easily go from day to night without reapplication!

In other news, I had been using PayPal to prepare my packages for shipment, including documents where I want to track had arrived but not necessarily that it was signed for. I am actually paying $2+ extra for this “privilege”. Last week, a post office clerk told me that the packages would be returned to me for insufficient postage. I had done this quite a few times before but was never told this. I was about to argue then thought better if it because I remembered something about “packages” need to be more than a certain thickness and must have something rigid inside so it can’t be easily bent. Now I know – as long as I keep under 5 oz, I won’t be paying more than zi was prepared to pay. I got creative with using a combination of light cardboard packaging, packing peanuts and paper folding ?.

No frivolity… just straight Fiori di Capri. Rainy day.

Getting a huge kick out of the photos and stories from my sister. She and her husband acquired a basset hound puppy, who is apparently quite the handful. Most of the photos are exhausted pup snoozing. So very cute.

Brought out my mini of Jour d’Hermes edp tonight. It’s not a spray bottle, so I may have dumped a bit too much on; then again maybe not!

I tried to get a bottle of Chanel Paris-Venise a couple days ago online, but it said “insufficient quantity available”. I only tried for 1 bottle. Not sure why it is appearing on the site if it isn’t actually available.
