Tuesday scent of the day 7/30

Posted by Robin on 30 July 2019 291 Comments

It's Tuesday. Birthdays today: Emily Brontë, plus Buddy Guy turns 83. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: still on pretend vacation, this time in [an indie brand that can count + an essay you were assigned when you went back to school in September]. Tea at the moment is Harney CTC Assam.

Reminder: on 8/2 we're doing edition 3 of the Guessing Game...describe your perfume to us, OR, give your perfume the name it ought to have had, and we'll see if we can guess what it is. Suggested by Glannys.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: The Penguin Books Wuthering Heights mug is £8.99 at Penguin in the UK.

Support treatment for a broken berry?

A broken berry might be Pulp but that leaves out the support.

A reinterpretation of a part of Eastern history by a French perfumer and one of the best interpretations of this particular flower. Not fierce like yesterday but quietly commanding.

You are drinking rather downmarket tea, aren’t you Robin ;)

One of my favourite summer beverages is a rather trashy flavoured green tea by Palais des Thés called sweet sorbet, containing mango, pineapple and flowers. They no longer make it unfortunately.

It is a lovely day in May, and you are walking barefoot in the forest enjoying the soft green grass under your feet. You pass the trees covered with ivy and moss. Then you come to the clearing and see a lot of tiny white flowers in the grass, like scattered pearls from a broken string.

Other greens that crossed my mind, although I’m struggling with the addition of white flowers are; Perle de Mousse, Dryad and maybe even vintage Diorissimo.

Yes, it is Perle de Mousse!
White flowers are lily-of-the-valley. I was intentionally a bit misleading, but its flowers are white, tiny and bloom in May.

I splurged yesterday on By Killian scented lipsticks. I really wanted a red, and their matte reds are gorgeous. Donatella would approve right?

        Hi Flopper!
The case is weighty but beautiful, elegant and I feel very chic when I put it on.
I got Dangerous Rouge, in the matte because I feel like it lasts longer on the lips. For the price point, you want it to last! HA! But the shiny ones could be nice too but I wasn’t interested.
I would say that I am fair with pink undertones and like more pink based reds. They do have some orange and bright ones. I also tried the “classic’ colored red they sell that would be my second choice.
The small is neroli and maybe a hint of vanilla, similar to their Love perfume.
        Hope this helps.

I’m wearing the roller ball oil form of a fragrance I bought on Saturday out sniffing with a couple of NST regulars (hugs to TheRabbitsFlower and SmellySmello – lots of fun!). The fragrance (so the story goes) was inspired in part by African culture and contains a root that I sometimes have trouble with, but am enjoying here.

I’m a bit worried that my roller ball is not functioning quite correctly, but otherwise I’m thoroughly enjoying my purchase!

I’ve spent the morning cavorting with a crate of congers…

Since I last traveled by air in March I decided I was DONE with my miserable, outdated, horrible luggage and have been on a mission to replace it. (Mission is now complete.) I’ve also bought all manner of travel accessories to make packing and traveling easier and more efficient.

I bought this: https://www.potterybarn.com/products/mckenna-jewelry-travel-case/?pkey=cjewelry-boxes-displays&isx=0.0.2070.5 thinking it would either be a functional travel jewelry box (I’m 5’10” and my jewelry is proportional to my size ;) ) OR that it would be the perfect travel perfume box.

I packed it up with perfume yesterday and it is indeed the perfect travel perfume box. I fit a couple of minis, 2, 3 & 5 ml decants, and some 7 & 8 ml travel sprays (the Atelier one’s a bit too long but fits diagonally.) I won’t have to worry about them getting crushed in transit, and can keep them stored upright in the box when I unpack.

I also bought this: https://www.ebags.com/product/kelty/cache-box-small-string/374855?productid=10778634 , which ought to arrive tomorrow. I’m hoping it’ll work to put jewelry in since the other box is now full. It looks pretty brilliant to me – a small hardsided case seems really handy but I’ve not seen too many other options that are this size and are more or less empty inside. Stuff like this often has too much built-in organize-y stuff that ends up making them less functional. (Especially for jewelry. I wear big cuffs and chunky rings and necklaces. They don’t fit in boxes that are designed for dainty items.)

Everything’s on spinner wheels now, and I LOVE packing/compression cubes! My whole system is so… cubical (? surely there’s a better word, not sure what it is.) It’s what got me to thinking that I needed hardsided cubes for delicate items. I usually put my perfumes in a little bag and stuff them into a shoe (which has always worked fine) but this is a little upgrade. And I like the idea of being able to store them together once they’re unpacked.

Packing cubes changed my life…also deciding that most of my clothes will be the one style of top I have in a million colors.

For perfume and jewelry (separately), I use a dollar store hard plastic pencil case and I just use two rubber bands to form a cross to make sure they do not open in transit.

Today’s my first day back at work after a camping trip that was fun, but left me more tired than before I went. The weather was beautiful until the last night, when we rode out back-to-back, small-but-fierce thunderstorms in a leaky little tent. Suffice it to say, I still haven’t caught up on my sleep.

I’m not feeling sharp enough to come up with a clue for the guessing game, so I’ll just tell you that I’m easing back into the week with Alyssa Ashley Musk after a mostly scent-free weekend.

I love guessing game week! You are all so clever.

I’m wearing a lemony lemon gentleman, from a distinguished French family that also includes a Madame (pretty) and a Miss (attractiveness level not specified).

I just got a little bit of the vintage, to compare it with the reformulated version that is my very favorite lemon. I’m wearing one on each arm today. I’m finding that the original has more candy-lemon sharpness, and lots of herbal lavender, so the overall effect is more bitter, as opposed to the musky smoothness of the reformulation. Unusually for me, I like the new one better! I am not a big lavender fan. But both are great.

I’m in HdP 1826, a ladylike citrus floral. It will fade a bit by the time I go to the dentist for the first stage of the first of two crowns I need.
My dentist had a questionnaire with some of the following:

    Would you like TV?
    What channels?
    Blanket?
    Earphones?
    Pillow?

Answers: yes, yes and yes! ?

I like the questionnaire! My last dentist had all that stuff (except the pillow) which helps tremendously. She had the cheapest cable package, though, so not many channels to choose from. I’d always end up watching one of the shopping channels, which I found utterly hilarious. Watching someone try to come up with an hour’s worth of descriptions for a gold watch, jeggings, or powdered foundation cracked me up.

Are you doing both crowns in one day? Even one is rough. I’m a major clencher, though, so the worst of it for me is a sore jaw for days afterward. Prescription muscle relaxants helped.

I liked it, too! I’m just doing the fitting for one crown today. Not sure I could take two in one day. I’m actually wondering if I’ll make it to the gym tomorrow. We shall see.

I hear you on the clenching! I wear a night guard, which is in bad shape from all of the grinding.

What a beautiful sunny day! And our heat wave has broken. Even the cat is happier.

Sledgehammer week continues. This scent is the only one that has earned me disapprobation from the general public. I maaaaay have worn quite a bit of it, and I’m certain it was the target of an overly loud conversation about how all perfumes should be banned. :(

Anyway, this scent is from a house that many of you love, but I don’t; I’ve seen it described as the scent by house ‘X’ for people who don’t like house ‘X’ and perhaps that is true, since it’s the only scent from this house that I own. This house is prone to issuing Man / Woman versions of their scents, and my SOTD is a Woman… her Man was so forgettable we hardly ever mention him here on NST.

Dear friends, I miss reading the SOTD posts! I don’t work as much in the lab anymore (too much to do, so I have help from lab techs who run most of my experiments for me), which means I don’t have those little 10-minute blocks anymore that are too short to do useful work but just the right length for some Internet reading. I hope you are all well.

Here are some hints about what I’m wearing, for people who have read my posts and have great memories: I’m wearing something I’ve been wearing a lot of lately, from the house I wore more times than any other in 2018! A scent I love in extrait format but dislike in all other concentrations.

Here are hints for those who don’t remember my perfume life (and how dare you not?!): a gardenia scent for people who don’t much care for BWFs, rounded out with some grapefruit and lemon and clean rainwater green. Created by a master of his craft who I think has retired, and who has definitely retired from the house at which he was resident nose for an era.

    Good Morning!

    1) Am in Solar Bloom by Clean (no one would be able to guess, honestly) This is a very nice scent for summer.

    2) Overcast and cooler this morning, but we will get a lovely blue sky this afternoon!

    3) Wowzers! Where did July go? My garden is doing well and FINALLY the peppers and tomatoes are setting fruit to ripen. All the herbs, squash, cukes and greens did well (except the basil!) with the onslaught of heat and sunshine. Eating LOADS of salad, made with lots of green goddess dressing.

        ARGH!

        2) The CSA is gonna rock! Eat every bit- a lot of love and work went into it!

My fragrance has some serious history as it was launched the same year that Rod Stewart released “Maggie May.” It managed to marry the headshop faves of the ‘60s— patchouli, sage, chamomile, and sandalwood with fit-for-the-office aldehydes, rose, and oakmoss. I didn’t discover it until the late 90s, when I was shopping for gifts one late winter afternoon in fancy gift and “spa” shops in Bethesda, MD. I remember the store perfectly. It was a salon and “day spa” that sold face, hair and body products, as well as make-up. The shop had a vaguely clinical feel, so I was shocked and a little horrified when I tested this perfume—not at all what I was expecting. But then it grew on me, and now it is one my comfort scents.

I haven’t tried the vintage. Even since the 90s the perfume has changed. No doubt the reg changes on oakmoss have impacted the scent. It is still fun, but not as crazy good as it was in the 90s. I do not know what it was like in the 70s, but now that I am thinking about it, I bet it is what my aunt wore in the 70s. I remember thinking that it reminded me of her when first tried it.

That was fast. I ordered Kiehl’s Original Musk Blend no 1 Saturday night and it arrived on my doorstep this morning. Am I wearing it now? Nope, SOTM is Ubar. Still not quite cool enough for it to be an all day thing. I have been watching CSI New York on Amazon Prime and it’s a pity that is was cancelled. I think that people got bored with it and all the CSI shows. I am on the second season and the story lines do seem a little rough. It doesn’t really delve into personalities too much right now. I think that Sarrasins will be the post shower type of perfume.

I’ve never tried White Diamonds before and I saw a bottle for sampling so I sprayed some on. That’s a pretty big white floral lol. But mostly it’s big aldehydes and it’s kind of too much. I don’t mind aldehydes but this is aldehyde extreme. Lol. Reminds me of number 5 a little bit, but definitely number 5. This scent is very soapy the aldehydes are a little bit too sharp.

I saw a Buddy Guy live once it was a pretty good show. My date could have had some improvements lol. I did enjoy Buddy’s Sweet Tea album. It’s a pretty good listen.

Lilac perfume often described as a “rich lady perfume”.

In other news, a POX on Wholefoods Market and its Amazon Prime Members SAVE marketing ploy.l! First of all, I do not go there to save money because many of their items are more expensive BUT I like their fresh produce and their extensive prepared foods selection; however, if I can get more for less, why not? So, on Sunday, I walked past the refrigerated cases past Produce and my peripheral vision was alerted to big yellow signs on the upper left corner of every other door: Amazon Prime Members SAVE 10% !!! and in smaller font “on yellow tagged sale items”. Ok, so I was game to look for these “bargains”. I looked up and down and from one end to the other end – there were no yellow tagged signs anywhere. I flagged down a worker and she could not find anything either, so I demanded to speak to the manager because it was false advertising! While waiting, I decided to look again and sure enough, in a dark dingy corner at the very bottom shelf, there was a row of yucky looking pickles in plastic containers looking like they were deader than dead past their prime (of course, no pun intended). The worker came back with one of those scanner guns getting ready to scan each item (you have got to be kidding me). I held up a SPEAK TO THE HAND ? and said never mind, I saw the disgusting looking pickles on sale thanks but no thanks and I stormed off! Grrrr!

Whole Foods is neither the most expensive grocery store in Cleveland, nor the one with the best produce. I’m kind of happy not to have a reason to go there anymore. (In Seattle, they had the best bakery, but once out of the city that was not the case – which I never understood. Different products at different stores. Wha?)

Amazon grocery delivery used to be fantastic. Now it sucks balls.

Gotta admit. I like the Whole Foods near us. Prices are often no worse than anywhere else in our neighborhood (especially in their house brand), and I do take advantage of the sales, including deals for Prime members…have fiend good ones on fish. I use the app to see what’s on sale to see if it’s a worthwhile visit.

PSA: Fragrancenet has a few ELDO 100ml testers going for ~$50, with the 37% off code GPYA37 it comes to a little more than $31.

Also, Saks coupon that works on beauty/fragrance: STYLESF. $50 off $250 or $100 off $500 or $200 off $1000.

I’m not very creative so I can’t think a witty way to describe what I’m wearing. Love reading what everyone comes up with. SOTD is Vetiver Tonka.

SotD = 4711 + Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat

All citrus, all day! It’s been a warm afternoon. I’m getting things done at home with the AC off. Lots of paperwork and life details that need attention after time away.

Returned Sunday after going to the beach with a large family group for a week long retreat from regular life. Took as many perfume bottles as I dared. Turns out the magic number of FBs is 9!

    Eau des Merveilles
    Iris Ukiyoe
    Vanille Galante
    Hiris
    Assam of India
    Vanira Moorea
    Infusion d’iris EdT
    Cologne du 68
    Terracotta Le Parfum

It’s nice to travel by car and not worry about packing for a plane ride. :D

Hope everyone’s week is shaping up nicely. Looking forward to more fun and games as I try to guess perfume names. You clever perfume people are fascinating.
