The daily lemming

Posted by Robin on 22 July 2019 7 Comments

From Montblanc's Elixir Parfumeur series, gray ink in Wood & Tobacco: "The Montblanc Elixir Parfumeur collection embraces exquisite unisex fragrances, as well as the use of oils and the finest plants, to express maximum intensity. The scents stimulate emotions and memory through a reinterpretation of the most beloved raw material scents of all time. The fragrance of the Elixir Parfumeur Wood & Tobacco ink features a warm and woody aroma that can be highly potent. Agarwood is said to be the most expensive timber in the world. The deep gray color is inspired by the evaporation of wood and tobacco smoke." $77 for 50 ml at Pen Boutique.

I have a lot of inks (gotta feed the fountain pens something), and I even have a fair few scented inks (De Atramentis makes some gorgeous ones, and J. Herbin has a smart little collection of them), but I am having trouble imagining an ink that’s worth $100 CAD a bottle, especially considering that the scent doesn’t last — you smell it when you open the bottle to fill your pen, and a bit when you’re writing, but it’s gone quickly, long before the recipient of a letter would ever get it. It would have to be — the scent is water-based, because any oil would make greasy stains on the paper.

But I’m not the market for this sort of thing, am I?

Although adding, nor am I — I have not had a fountain pen for years.

The good thing about mainstream trying to do niche is that they often find their way to the bargain bins of the world. And in the meantime, one can read the reviews as they come in, to see if it’s even worth looking for in those bins.

This is ink, not perfume :-)

I studied calligraphy and I do like the smell of the ink bottles:). Can keep the oud and tobacco notes away from the ink though.
