Monday scent of the day 7/22

Posted by Robin on 22 July 2019 205 Comments

Monday all over again. It's also Hammock Day and Mango Day, and Susan Eloise Hinton's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

It's still a wee bit too hot for Hammock Day here, so I'm celebrating Mango Day with my very old bottle of Parfums de Nicolaï Eau Exotique.

Reminder: on 7/26 we're doing Gone In Sixty Seconds...wear the shortest-lived fragrance you own. Bonus points for reapplying all day long. Suggested by pyramus.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Good morning! Rose Ikebana for me, so beautiful and fleeting. It’s a good gym fragrance.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Monday! ???

Note twin in Lustre. Reminds me very much of one of the SSS rose fragrances. Laurie was a master with roses.

I tried that in the little rose soliflore sample set I got from Luckyscent and it just didn’t stand out. Interesting to hear how many people love it. I do like the Malik al’Taif a lot. I will be interested in following your rose exploration, chocolate marzipan8.

You smell wonderful Robin, I’ve got a bottle of that stashed away somewhere.
I’m wearing my brand new Patchouli 24 perfume oil that I bought at a very steep discount. I happened upon it completely by chance and am very pleased. It’s a great rendition and very long lasting.
Has anyone here tried any Atkinson’s perfumes? While browsing the perfume aisles in the Bijenkorf I was introduced to two of that line. The SA was clearly very fond of them and I though they were crap. Which I didn’t tell her in those words ;)

My Pacifica scents (Tahitian Gardenia and Waikiki Pikake) arrived. I promised holyneroli to review Waikiki Pikake. It’s not what I expected. I thought it was going to be a jasmine-centric perfume, but to me it does not smell like jasmine at all, at least not the jasmine I know. It’s a tropical, beachy fragrance that smells of white flowers and overripe tropical fruits. Maybe it’s how Hawaiian jasmine smells. Anyway, I do not like it so far, and I will probably get rid of it. At least it cost less than 10$.

Many thanks for the mini-review, Glannys, even if it’s not what you (or I) had hoped. Have you ever tried Kuumba Made perfume oils? I just bought one called Pikake Lei and it’s how I would’ve wanted the Pacifica to smell! Jasmine-y, with a hint of clean musk in the base.

No, I have not tried anything by Kuumba Made. I do not think I have ever tried anything Pikake-scented, actually. So unfortunately I cannot think of anything I can compare WP with.

Let me include a little plant nerd moment here. Pikake is actually Jasminum Sambac, native to the Eastern Himalayas, Bhutan and other far flung places. It will naturalize anywhere it does not freeze and has done so all over South East Asia and many Pacific Rim countries, it is the national flower of the Phillipines. It is flourishing in Hawaii and leis are often made from this flower. If you are addicted to Monoi oil, as I am, I order the one that has a Pikake flower in the bottle. I find it less indolic and camphorous than other jasmines, not that there is anything wrong with either of those qualities. I think it is fresher and more tea like and I wear Pacifica Waikiki Pikake in the depths of winter and in weather like we are having now. White florals sing in the heat, for me, anyway. It is a soliflore and a simple one at that but I layer it with Mugler Cologne and other fresh and green fragrances. I am really disappointed that Pacifica stopped making it’s excellent soaps and shower gels and candles.

        Thanks, stinker_kit!

I find it confusing that Pacifica described the notes as “Hawaiian jasmine and sandalwood”, not “jasmine sambac and sandalwood” or “pikake and sandalwood”. WP doesn’t smell at all like, for example, Hermes Cedre Sambac to me. Probably some other notes they did not mention.

They discontinued their soaps? How sad. They had a long-lasting scent, lathered well and were quite gentle on skin, as far as I remember.

“Notes” are not ingredients…there might not be any real jasmine or sandalwood at all. Cedre Sambac might not have any jasmine either, or it might have some funky molecular fraction of jasmine. And 99% of perfumes have other notes they did not mention :-)

Robin, I know that and agree with all that.

I meant something quite different though:
Me: Hawaiian jasmine note? No idea what it is or how it smells like.
stinker_kit’s reply: Pikake is actually Jasminum Sambac etc.
Me: Oh, do you mean that Hawaiian jasmine is Pikake? How strange that they call it that in the notes.

Of course, I might have jumped to concluion and misunderstood stinker_kit’s reply.
I know that the scent may be called Violet and have no violet note in the description (this is just a random example I came up with). But I would be surprised to see a scent named French lavender with notes mentioning English lavender, but not French lavender. That would be a bit strange.

          • Robin says:
            23 July 2019 at 10:34 am

            Gotcha.

I just figure if I see “Hawaiian jasmine” or “jasmine sambac” or “pikake” or “sampaguita” or “Arabian jasmine” or whatever, it might all be the same synthetic jasmine note. Jasmine absolute is expensive.

I would not assume there was much truth in the list even if it was an expensive perfume, and here, even more…seems highly unlikely that anybody produced and then shipped jasmine sambac absolute from Hawaii to make this $24 perfume. More likely it came out of a lab in New Jersey.

Companies frequently mention geographic sources in note lists — “Indian sandalwood”, “English lavender”, “Calabrian bergamot” — and I pretty much ignore those. It’s all PR, and they can say whatever they want, there are no laws preventing you from buying a lavender absolute from France, calling your fragrance “English lavender” and then using “English lavender” in your note list. And in the end, I don’t see what difference it makes. The fact that the plants smell different tells you little…the end products will differ due to other reasons (distilling and processing methods, how the perfume uses them, etc etc).

I started this week with Atelier Cologne Jasmin Angelique. I’m telling you, it’s not that easy being green. I got this pen probably a year or 2 ago and I didn’t like this scent. It was in a purgatory drawer. I came back to it few days ago and surprise – now I quite like it!

Wishing you all a lovely week. I’m envious of my parents who started their Greek vacation yesterday.

I do like it! I never did click with the original Stash, but Stash Unspoken works for me. This one is supposed to be ‘softer and more feminine’, whatever that means. Listed notes include pink pepper, peony, quince, honeysuckle, musk, sandalwood, tonka, incense. I get mainly tonka, sandalwood, a hint of incense and honeysuckle… but my main impression is sunscreen! It’s very beachy and coconutty on me. Dunno why, but there you have it.

I’m wearing a new iris, “Holy Grail” by DUA. I don’t know if this is just ludicrously aspirational marketing or in my case, apt. I’m enjoying it immensely, but it’s really weird! According to DUA, it’s “inspired by Iris Gris/ L’Iris de Fath” but I can’t make any comparison as I’ve never smelled either and it’s highly likely that I never will. I don’t really get most of the listed notes as on me the iris is quite dominant, but as iris lovers know that can go in many directions and this does. I smell a slightly sweet butter like you’d find in Scottish shortbread, soil, a yeasty note, a smidgen of powder with just a tinge of violet, and a ton of orris butter. These facets are all present from the top to the drydown and they shift in and out of my awareness in a way that I find captivating. I’m not sure if this is something that others would find wearable as a perfume, but I sure do! This could be a Hiram Green fragrance – it’s to iris as Lustre is to rose.

Being lazy today. Had two things that I needed to do today and took care of one of them already, the other has to wait until this afternoon. A family member’s car broke down and he is using the other car. I am so happy that Kohl’s is accepting Amazon returns and I have a return to make. I wasn’t about to pay for return shipping. Yes, I am cheap that way. I am still in Lyric and haven’t showered yet. It’s cool enough to go with vintage BaV today and that will be the post shower SOTD.

There’s also an amazon locker downtown. That’s where I take all my returns that aren’t free via ups.

I live on a fairly rural area and the lockers are a 45 minute drive for me as opposed to a 15 minute drive. Can you tell I live in Northeastern Ohio? We don’t measure in distance but how long it takes to get there. Don’t ask me why we do that here, we just do that.?

Ha! I had exactly that conversation with someone the other day.

Incidentally, that’s how people gauged the drive (anywhere) in LA – at least when I lived there 20 yrs ago. No matter where you were going it was a “20 minute” drive. Except you can’t get anywhere in LA in 20 minutes, so I had to learn to double or triple that depending on where I was going.

I was wondering about the Kohls option, though. Have you done a return there yet?

Haha! That’s pretty true about the 20 minute drive, lol. My valley friends always insisted they were a 20 min drive from the city. And in the 80s, 20 minutes was actually considered far. Traffic wasn’t as bad as it is nowadays.

That’s definitely a thing in NE Ohio! It’s a thing in Michigan too, where I’m from. I find that Michigan and NE Ohio share a lot of the same regional quirks of speech and language (e.g. it’s “pop” not “soda”).

Smiling at the comments on both measuring travel by time, and also “soda versus pop”. I’ve always measured travel by how long it takes to get there, no matter where I have lived.

Grandiflora Madagascan Jasmine for another hot day though not as oppressed as the weekend was. It was even too hot to ho sit at the beach, which was our plan yesterday, but hung out indoors at my in-laws on Long Island instead. Dinner was lobster tails, steak, mac and cheese, and homemade baked beans. They feed us well when we visit ?

I’m wearing Bergamote 22 because it fits the warm weather and I was able to finish off a sample. I still have a decant from the last swap meet, so I’ll continue to wear it this summer.

I normally take 3mg melatonin at night to help me get to sleep and stay asleep. I had to buy a new bottle last week and didn’t realize I got quick dissolve tablets. Wow, I’m sleeping so deeply just by changing to the quick dissolve. At first I thought it was knocking me out for too long, but I think I’m getting used to it now. It takes me a little while to wake up and feel alert, but I just feel so much better rested on a Monday than I’m used to.

It’s worth looking into for sure. I just need to be sure to only take it when I really need it. I tend to need it more in the warmer months since it stays light longer and I have more trouble sleeping when it’s hot in my bedroom.

I’m having the same issue this summer (not due to heat, but I’m just more sensitive to light and noise and would **love** to sleep in until, like, 6 a.m.)

I got a fitbit to track my sleep cycles and apparently I’m pretty close to the normal range, but a little short on deep sleep.

I also get WAY off track in the winter (last winter was ridiculous) so I’m trying to think of ways to better manage my sleep in all seasons.

    Happy Monday!

    1) To Robin: Yes, I did relocate some of the borage, trimmed the bolted cilantro (I might pull it) and planted the fresh basil starts. I also tackled the rest of the yard which I neglected and was turning into a jungle. I also took the mint of the pots- they were not thriving- and planted them in ground with plenty of compost. They will spread but they will be happy.
As a result, and with the boost in the sunny weather, the garden seems to have new fresh energy.

    2) In addition to garden work, I went to Night Market. Sunday was a much needed hangout time!

    3) In Cap Neroli, of course.

    4) Mango day! So I will make some homemade mango ice cream!

Borage is great for pollinators and bees- the flowers are so cute and the blue color really attracts bees, butterflies and other pollinators. For humans, you can use the flowers in decoration in fruit and savory veg salads, in lemonade and such.

Not participating in SL Vetiver Oriental, which is quite long-lasting on me. Powdery goodness.

It is downright cool here after the weekend heat. While I recognize that most will appreciate the change in weather, it’s a bit of a bummer. Supposed to be cool and rainy for the next few days. But it’s also a good time to test out the 3 oil-filled radiators that were just delivered by amazon.

I’m considering using a $50 bloomingdale’s GC on the travel size bottle of FM Vetiver Extraordinaire. I’ve never smelled it on skin; I only smelled it sprayed on a card years ago and thought it was quite lovely.

Thoughts? It gets very mixed reviews. My favorite vetivers are Prada Infusions, the above-mentioned SL, Fat Electrician, Atelier Vetiver Fatal, Carven, Guerlain Vetiver, and other light fare. Not a fan of darker/inkier types like Encre Noir or Sycomore.

Oh – and I didn’t get around to posting this weekend, so I’ll add this now:

Before reading the thread I had a craving for Prada Iris Absolue. As I was spraying, I realized that I was wearing my favorite snow perfume on the hottest day of the year. It works for both! It’s a very visual perfume for me – all white – which makes me want to wear it when it’s snowing but was also appealing in near-100F weather.

Well I just blind bought DKNY Nectar Love…ugh. lol. I knew the potential of this being kind of bad was pretty probable, however, when I hear honey and nectar I get kind of weak. If the stupid DKNY musk loudness part wasn’t so loud I can actually enjoy the honey underneath. But it’s kind of like every DKNY but with honey. Oh well for $16 for an ounce I guess I can’t cry about it. I swear I smell apple in this, apple musk and honey. Granny Smith musk blast with a drop of honey. This is so bad. It’s almost a scrubber. And I knew better lol.

SOTD = back in Bandit. This is the polar opposite of fast and fleeting. I could smell hints of the far drydown from yesterday when I woke up this morning. So it made perfect sense to wear it again today (to me).

SO much rain out here this year that even a little bit can cause flooding. ☔

Niiiice! I love it when I can layer more of a favorite scent over a long-lived drydown ?

We got the rain last night AND tonight. There were many flooded areas…I had to turn around 3x and finally just went through 3 segments of flooding. I’m lucky to have an SUV but even so, it was harrowing. I saw several much smaller cars with no choice but to go through the same flooded sections because there was no way to turn around or even wait it out on the side!

Scent of the moment: C.O. Bigelow Lemon lotion. I did get out yesterday and today — before the storms — but I’ve stayed in the house too much to really be able to experiment with perfume. I believe the storms that are currently hitting this section of southeastern Pennsylvania will be rolling Jalapeno’s way soon.

I’m looking forward to the promised better weather tomorrow afternoon. Definitely not hammock weather today, but I would have gotten mangoes last time I went shopping if I knew it was mango day. I have a bottle of mango drink that I might as well start tonight.

Oh, I definitely DID get those storms! The trees across the street were almost bent in half with the wind. All 3 cats were freaking out at one point, and they usually don’t care about the weather outside.

A lot of my commentary has been about the weather these last few weeks, but it’s been fairly dramatic weather for these parts. My brother and I texted the other day — I think Saturday — and he confirmed that Baltimore was also “stinking hot” at the time.

The garden plants and native plants that like lots of water are very happy. I didn’t think geraniums and the various kinds of salvia I have could take that much water, but they’re doing well. The blue flag iris is quite all right with having its roots in water much of the time. The irises that aren’t that kind of iris are not so happy, but they’re pretty hardy. The ones in the raised bed seem to be doing all right, as they’re getting more drainage.

SOTD = Les Eaux de Chanel Paris – Riviera

It’s the newest SAMPLE in my collection. I wore it yesterday for science. Light citrus non-indolic jasmine is what I smell. Very nice and great for summer! 6 spritzes lasted 4 hours. I thought it would bloom in the heat in the commute back but nope. Next time. 10 spritzes just like my plan for the next time I wear Paris Deauville.

I am splitting off 75 mLs if anyone is interested. $1.1 per mL and I will use a plain glass atomizer and new shipping materials. Total cost will vary | $16-$17 depending upon your shipping address. If interested, please send me an email (click on my username). U.S. only please and I prefer to do splits with NST commenters.

After a pain-filled weekend I had emergency visits today to my dentist and then to the endodontist for a root canal. But after he did his special scan, he pronounced that Tooth #18 is fractured and must be extracted. So now I have a work-in appointment at the oral surgeon’s at 7:40 a.m. tomorrow. Sigh, and $$$. I forgot to put on any perfume today. Please wish me luck. I am terrified of dentists and this tooth is the furthest back molar on the bottom left. I’m also taking triple antibiotic doses due to my recent hip replacement.

Sending good thoughts! I was petrified of dentists for many years, but thankfully they seem to be more in tune with patient’s anxiety. My dentist is excellent; never thought I would say that 10 years ago.

Good luck! I’m quite familar with extractions, an oral surgeon should be able to knock you out, but you have to have a driver. It shouldn’t hurt much afterward as long as you follow the aftercare instructions.

I’m so sorry you have to go through that, Calypso. Laughing gas helps, as does just having the X-ray apron draped over you. The weight of it is calming. Much, much luck sent your way.
