Wednesday scent of the day 7/17

Posted by Robin on 17 July 2019 225 Comments

Hump Day and ? Emoji Day and ?? Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

No credit, but smelling great in John Varvatos Artisan.

Reminder: on 7/19, wear a fragrance by Jo Loves, Jack Perfumes, Jardins D’Écrivains, Jul et Mad or Juliette Has A Gun, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter J.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows musician Gary Clark Jr and family for John Varvatos Spring 2019.

Another drizzly morning – still love drizzle, but am wishing a wee bit for some sun – and wearing Tom Ford Violet Blonde.

Are there still decanting services that have it? I thought I snagged the last bottle on earth several years ago.

I’m wearing Caligna. I always forget how much fig there is in this one, and I dislike fig. So far the only fig-forward scent that I like is Philosykos.

Partial credit – I finished my sample of Jovoy Remember Me.

Today I bought two Pacifica scents from a sale – Tahitian Gardenia 28 ml and Waikiki Pikake 10 ml (rollerball). I hope Donatella will understand. The sale is at a local eshop which normally sells Pacifica products at about twice of their US price, but now they have finally reduced the prices to $21.5 and $9.5 respectively. Probably a clearance sale, so I am glad I snatched them.

Smells so good in the hot hot weather!

When I met my husband he wore John Varvatos Vintage, a fruity tobacco leather. He still has a bottle — I just wandered over to his dresser to smell it. But then I ended up in Eau de Baux.

Maria Candida Gentile Hanbury – Linden and other summer flowers, I also get something that seems like licorice or anise to my nose, but must be the bitter orange note. Pretty, pretty, pretty! These summer scents are all so pleasing in the heat.

It’s a lovely scent, but I sometimes think that the lavender note should be stronger, so adding a bit of lavender oil probably makes it even better.

After finding a sealed vintage Givenchy III parfum at an estate sale, and looking at it longingly for a month while I was trying and failing to sell it on eBay, today I finally cracked and delisted it, peeled off the seal sticker, enjoyed the click of the bottle coming out of the stand, applied. Wish I could say I was bowled over, but the heat ate it up so quickly I can barely smell it anymore…

Sampling today, 1993 from Smell Bent. It’s supposed to be their take on Angel I guess, with the patchouli/cholocate combo, but the opening has a horrible dominant note of stale root beer. It has since calmed down but that note is too ugly for me!

Ormonde Jayne Champaca. Not a small J, but does have J in it.?

Got to FaceTime with my college daughter who has been away working at summer-camp since the beginning of the month. She had a night off and spent it at my parents house (who live about 20 minutes away from said camp, lucky ducks). She’s having a great time.? It’s funny to hear her talk about how tiny some of the campers are, lol. She may have forgotten that she was one of those tiny campers 9 years ago, but I haven’t. I have the pictures to prove it. I don’t know where the years have gone…

It is brutally hot and humid today?
Makes me worry for my outdoor colony cats ? but they’re about 8 years old and have made it through 7 summers and winters so far, so I’m reminding myself of that.

There are some feral and stray cats a couple of blocks away from where I live. Sometimes, people leave cat food on the sidewalks so they have something to eat. It doesn’t happen everyday. I wonder how they survive without water in the brutal heat. I don’t see any water around where they can drink from. That has me very mortified, since neighbors are not so happy about people leaving even food for them.

Ferals like that don’t live very long, usually. Maybe a couple of years or so. Maybe leave a tupperware of water out somewhere discrete?
I’m lucky that this colony (which are all neutered) lives in a lot occupied by an auto body repair shop and they are super cooperative and have let me keep the winter shelters there and other supplies I have. Not everyone is cat friendly, though ?

Oh no, Elisa! This is really breaking my heart. One of the cats last night was looking very tired and they do not allowed anyone to get close to them. My neighborhood is very animal unfriendly. That goes for cats, birds, squirrels, even though there are many of them and it is a very green area. I will try to bring a container with water tonight and look for a place where it is not so very visible. I really hope it rains tonight. This is very sad.

Really? Birds and squirrels? They’re so inoffensive!
I’m sure the cats will appreciate the water!❤
The ferals that aren’t neutered don’t live as long as neutered colonies, mostly because they get into a lot of fights and the females end up pregnant too many times.
I’m also hoping it rains! One of the friendlier cats let me wet her down this evening ?

Someone dumped a cat in the woods near our house. My husband heard it crying late Sunday afternoon. We think it’s a juvenile Maine Coon cat. It’s so pretty with feet like saucers. Right now this poor kitty is living in our barn because my cat will attack it. At least it is safe, sheltered and fed. We turned on a fan but I am worried about it today because it’s stinking hot. We found a home for it and are supposed to drop it off tonight to a lovely lady who loves cats. I’ll feel better when this very sweet kitty is better situated. I understand your concern and hope the stray cats are not effected.

Good morning! I’m trying out HG Lustre this morning, and I’m…disappointed. It’s this great, smooth, gourmand, cool rose, kind of like Mohur, but with a solid under- and overtone of tamarind, kind of sour and sweet in a slightly nose-curling way. Blech. Maybe it’s just my nose today; I hope so.

Got a cortisone shot in my foot this morning for plantar fasciitis and oh holy mother of god that shot HURT. Like a LOT. I cannot remember another shot that hurt that badly (including the cortisone shots I got to my wrist some months ago). I guess foot muscles are a bit more dense than most others, huh? Anyway, working from home so I can minimize movement (not strictly required, but the doctor scared me with his talk of possible muscle tears). My kitten is “helping.”

I know, right?? He even warned me it would hurt, and I was like, Yeah, sure, it’s a shot; of course it’ll hurt. But after this one, I asked if I could just sit there for a few minutes to recover. He was very nice about it.

Sorry you had to experience this, too, but it’s kind of nice to see I wasn’t just being a big baby about it!

Oh, those shots are the worst, I’m so sorry you had to have that experience ? I had terrible plantar’s fasciitis and got the shots in the bottom of the heel. For years that pain was my 10 on the pain scale (as in actual pain that I’ve experienced, rather than the “worst pain you can imagine” which would be being mauled by a bear, but that’s never happened to me, thank God.) Enjoy your kitty’s help ?

It is such a relief that I’m not just being a baby about this!! It hurts like crazy, right?? My foot has been in considerable pain all day. They say 24 h of increased inflammation, so let’s hope that all the pain melts away overnight! Maybe I’ll take a nice bath in scented Epsom salt. Hmm.

I put on some Nemat Rose Otto after my shower last night and it still smells great today. I’ll add some Etro Messe di Minuit in a while, need the cooling of incense today. I currently have fresh produce hanging over my head needing to be used before it goes bad – need to make cucumber pickles and something with peaches – but cooking doesn’t sound appealing and for once, neither does eating ?

I’m wearing Keiko Mecheri Oliban today. I found my bottle in a recent attempt to clean out my perfume storage cabinets (and bins and drawers and shoe-boxes). This is pretty wonderful stuff, though it might prove a bit too heavy in our humid hot weather. To me this is a decidedly “purple’ scent. I can’t say why. And no I don’t have synaesthesia. Just some particular perfumes have a color. Anyway I am only half-way into my cleaning and sorting-out project. And this is only for bottles, samples are all in bins waiting to be sorted somehow. My system for bottles is not alphabetical but based on various other factors such as how often used, bottle height, bottle shape, niches of various types vs. department store perfumes (too many of those still left from my early days!) and so on. I also found a bottle of Odalisque (PdN) that I had completely forgotten about. Embarrassing. It was even in the box. I sprayed some on yesterday and thought “this is wonderful” but after awhile realised why I must have put it at the back of the cabinet, as it became very cloying. It will need to go up for the next swap meet I think. Hope people are all having a good day. I’ve got a final final deadline today on an article that’s just been killing me and once I send it out tonight I’m going to open a very nice bottle of wine (which I have yet to go out and buy).

Started the morning off in Terracotta. I’m now in Guerlain French Kiss. I smell like a rose-raspberry-vanilla macaron. That description doesn’t sound like something I’d want to smell like, our even eat for that matter, but I find this perfume utterly delightful.

Stopped at our neighborhood farmers market last night and found peaches! They’re ripening but will hopefully be worth eating soon. Also picked up the cutest little miniature eggplant – I could not resist. All different varieties, colors, and adorable. Plan to make a sandwich with them along with some beautiful yellow zucchini on some pillow-soft focaccia that we also picked up.

There’s also a pie lady that makes delicious goods. We’ve got 1 each mini sweet potato and pecan pie waiting in the wings as well.

I’m having a mildly terrific day – off contract for the summer, feel good, had a great workout this morning, took a shower, and I am now wafting Zoologist Dragonfly.

Well, where has this beauty been hiding? I think I must have passed on sampling it because of the heliotrope (which almost always smells like Play-doh to me, which I can’t abide). However, one of you wonderful people sent me a ton of Zoologist samples a while back, and I am finally getting around to this one (I tested many of the others practically before the tape on the package hit the floor). It’s just lovely.

The boyfriend seems to be recovering, today he managed to sit up and walk a bit with assistance. Will drive to Munich tomorrow afternoon to visit for the weekend.

    SOTD = Dior Dune

Not on theme but because Dune! I will be on theme tomorrow and Friday where it will be ?!

    In other news:
    – there’s a bottle of Guerlain 190 Anniversary perfume at La Maison. Now, they have to figure out logistics!
    – moving work location back to NYC. My boss is leaving it up to me to decide when! I don’t know when yet as I have a few pending items that can only be done at my current location.

Wow, loads of exciting news for you both with perfume and work! That bottle of Guerlain 190 is going to have quite the story attached to it when you finally have it in hand.

For sure. The SA’s manager was in Paris and if I were to suggest a way, I would say for the manger to carry it back with her in checked luggage and go from there. I am sure there’s all sorts of liability but it is not the $14,000 bottle so the monetary risk is low compared to a reasonable payoff.

Me too about the bottle but I won’t count my chickens before they hatch!

Yes, an easier commute but, slightly longer (if I choose to walk to the office from Penn Station) and more expensive and I have to do 3 tax returns. In the end, I feel it is worth it!

    Sotd = Terracotta Le Parfum

Terracotta is my summer Wednesday default perfume. Today it’s working perfectly.

Last night I wore Eau de Guerlain. I craved its minty cologne notes after eating Dirty Mint Chip ice cream from Coolhaus Ice Cream, an LA-based, women-owned business. Has real mint leaves, almost tasted too minty at first, but a few bites in I was hooked :D

    Adore Gary Clark, Jr!

good question! only the nose knows ;)

I enjoy Terracotta so very much, but my sniffer gets a little fatigued from it, something in the base is a little musky. So I will probably swap it out when the weather changes.

I went there; I put on only 2 teeny sprays of Chergui tonight, a little bit more subdued than my 6 or more sprays of Datura Noir last night. It feels like the temperature is creeping back up, we had rain for part of the day so it’s that warm, humid feeling now; I think Chergui will be quite yummy in this weather.

Crazy busy day. The managers were all out in meetings so the office was very quiet. I almost felt productive today!

I had to add another spray of Chergui for my wrists.

Very late posting! AC Cafe Tuberosa today. Love it. Also realizing I just love tuberose. But the coffee adds something unique to this one. Also, good longevity which I know is unusual for AC…

L’Artisan Drole de Rose decant is waiting for me in the mailbox. Off to collect it! Blind buy. Crossing fingers.
