Thursday scent of the day 7/11

Posted by Robin on 11 July 2019 187 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also Free Slurpee from 7-Eleven day and World Population Day (that would be 7.58 billion). What fragrance are you wearing?

What could be simpler than wearing the perfume that happens to be sitting right next to the perfume you wore yesterday? So I'm in L'Artisan Parfumeur L'Eau de L'Artisan, which, as it happens, also fits neatly with nearly any pond, anywhere.

Reminder: 7/12 will be Henry David Thoreau's birthday, aka Simplicity Day. Do absolutely whatever you like with the theme. (My favorite piece about Thoreau and Walden: Pond Scum: Henry David Thoreau’s moral myopia, from The New Yorker back in 2015. The other side: In Defense of Thoreau: He may have been a jerk, but he still matters at The Atlantic. Also, from a couple years after the original kerfluffle: A Radical for All Seasons: The surprising persistence of Henry David Thoreau in The Nation.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m doing more is more in Une Rose Nacrée du Désert by Guerlain and feeling like a million dollars.

Tea is a lovely jasmin green tea.

Lovely photos this morning – wish I were there! I chose Cristalle EDP this morning, and for about 5 minutes was wishing I hadn’t – it was hitting my nose in a kind of overboiled-vegetable way. But that was brief, thank goodness, and now it’s back to its usual gorgeousness.

I always love the opening of Cristalle (also EDP) but the last time I wore it, I picked up a bunch of stuff in the drydown that I’d never noticed before. In a good way, mind you!

      You smell great!

LOVE the opening AND the drydown of the EDP! Today’s unpleasant five minutes happened about half an hour in, and I hope it was just my nose this particular morning.

Yes, and I agree! In fact, it’s a little bit wintry here today (although this IS the Pacific NW, so “winter” is somewhat subjective) and I’m in the deep drydown phase now. I’m getting lots of moss from it and enjoying every second.

Cristalle is gorgeous. Overcooked vegetables, huh? I hope I don’t bump into that next time I wear it!

Yeah, it was bad. I knew there was a chance it was just my nose, but if it had gone on much longer I would have been really worried – I love Cristalle in all concentrations, at all times of the year.

I was gifted a bottle of Nuxe refreshing fragrant spray yesterday but a friend of mind. She is a fan and bought me a bottle from France. That is layered over sunblock

I should of picked some up while I was in Canada.

The oil is definitely worth hunting down if you like the idea of a beachy orange blossom. I was able to snag a small bottle before Nuxe pulled it from the US market. It’s gone now and I kinda miss it.

Just to encourage you to return to Canada sooner rather than later, the drugstores here have a lot of French brands which are less easy to find in the U.S.: Nuxe, La Roche Posay, Avène. There are also French-sounding companies from Canada such as Ombrelle and Lise Watier.

I’m working through my sample of Tam Dao today so I can crack open the new bottle that arrived a couple days ago. Woohoo!

Thursdays are my favorite weekday because it’s farmer’s market day! Today I’m looking for bread, maple syrup, and whatever fresh veggies catch my eye.

No tea at the moment, but instead I’m drinking a delicious orange-vanilla seltzer.

And…I broke down and ordered a small bottle of Cap Neroli last night. I’ve been trying to whittle my way down to just one really fabulous neroli in my collection, but I’m stuck between Cap Neroli and Eau de Neroli Dore. I’m starting to think the two are different enough that I can justify also acquiring a small bottle of Neroli Dore once I use up my decant…

        I think they’re significantly different.
Are you whittling down based on samples and decants you’re using up, or in terms of bottles you are letting go of?

Dzongkha today for some much needed zen. It’s what I was going to wear for the CP tomorrow, but decided to do it a day early as I’m off to Breyerfest at the Kentucky Horse Park this weekend and will probably wear something a little cooler, like EdM Bleue. Or a Jardin. Something Hermes, anyway.

Oh man, they messed with Iris Poudre? I suppose I had expected that… after all, the Lauder acquisition was the impetus for me to break the piggy bank and buy a bottle. And then I felt dumb, because for the next year or so there didn’t seem to be any changes in the Malles reported. But you’ve tried a recent bottle of IP and been disappointed?

Yes, it smelled different when I tried it again a few weeks ago. I am going to smell it one more time tonight to decide whether I write it off as gone, or if it’s still good enough to repurchase. At 200€ a bottle, it’s going to need to make me pretty happy. You were very smart to have bought a bottle as soon as the buyout was announced.

No, it doesn’t. :( It was painful to shell out $300 all at once, but I justified it by saying, “Hey, I’ve been saving for this for three years,” and “You KNOW Lauder is just gonna Mess It Up.”

      • cazaubon says:

So I tested Iris Poudre and Le Parfum de Thérèse tonight. Both smell like pale photocopies of the originals. So sad.

I am happy for you that you got your bottle, painful as it was at the time! They are not worth the money now.

I’m wearing Lempicka Elle L’Aime for the 3rd time this week. I wore it Tuesday evening and the next morning was smelling TF Orchid Soleil and couldn’t quite figure out where it was coming from. I wondered if it might be the deep drydown of Elle L’Aime, and indeed it is, albeit more toned-down. Successful blind buy! It goes from lime to coconut (like warm skin with coconut tanning oil after a day at the beach), to TF Orchid Soleil. Good stuff.

You hit the nail on the head – it, like many of the scents from this line that I have, is discontinued. :-) I like that she’s always changing and progressing, but it’s not great if you are trying to replace a perfume that you like. Ankhara is slightly leathery, a little dry and dusty, with warm spices. I like it. It will be going the way of the dodo, though, since I only have a ml or so left in my mini….

I was sooo indecisive this morning, partly because I had no particular craving. I started with my forgotten little solid tin of Lush’s Death and Decay and then ended up full-on in Geisha Blanche, which is nice in the heat and smells like fancy soap.

Sotd is Allure edp. Mugler sent me a sample of the new Angel edt, and sigh…. It’s so boring. Up top it’s a little fruity, the rest is just like every other new release. I’m pretty much over any new Mugler release after Aura edp. I panicked and bought Alien mirrors de joyeax blind, before it was gone. Enabler pin Aurora. I should get it in a few days. I’m just on the lookout now for anything old Thierry Mugler.

    SotD = Hiris

My Tursday perfume by default, Hiris is smelling great with the remains of last night’s l’air du desert marocain.

Wore laddm because I was craving it after noticing my largest makeup brush smells of it. When I traveled by plane a few weeks ago I stashed my mini bottle with my makeup. Thankfully I adore the scent, so it’s all good.

Hope everyone has a Thursday to be thankful for. I’m going to the beach for a swim!

Today I had a brief Creamsicle note up top, then I had more suntan lotion goodness. No floral notes in this one at all. No caramel in the warm weather, but I did notice that in the base notes in cool/cold weather. There’s a fair amount of tonka in this if my nose is correct.

I’m wearing a rather unseasonable scent, Memoir de l’Amour by Nostalgia Collection. It’s candy-sweet rose, jasmine, peach, and plum. I found the bottle while cleaning boxes this morning. Not all of us manage to maintain alphabetized perfume drawers! I must do something though to bring some order into chaos. This fragrance is just like an enjoyable perfume candy for me. With rose and peach, what can go wrong? I’m more cheerful than normal because I’m near to finishing off an article that has been frustrating me for months. :-)

Scent of the morning: Assam of India. Like others here, I’m quite fond of it.

Torrential downpour as I drove to my ophthalmologist appointment and then dashed into the office. The receptionists were a little amused by my drowned rat appearance. All was good eye-wise. It wasn’t raining when I started driving home, but it was beginning to rain again as I got home. I decided I was in for the day when I saw it raining hard again outside and heard some thunder.

    SOTD was Lonestar Memories.

Grieving a dear friend who passed away last night. She had so many physical challenges (juvenile diabetes, double-organ transplant — twice!, limited mobility, many complications and issues) but was such a positive force of life! Smart, engaged, enthusiastic, and wickedly funny. She had recovered pretty well from a stroke last year, but lately had complained of confusion; her neurologist assessed she was having TIAs but there was nothing really to be done.

Last week I went over to visit with her and a few other friends for the Fourth of July; it was one of her “good days” and we had such fun together. I’m so lucky I got to spend that time with her.
